Radio observations of Uranus obtained at 2.0 cm with the B configuration of the VLA during April 1985 are reported. The calibration and data-reduction procedures are described in detail, and the results are presented in tables, maps, and graphs and compared with IRIS 44-micron observations (Hanel et al., 1986). Features discussed include highest brightness centered on the pole rather than on the subearth point, a decrease in brightness temperature (by up to 9 K) at latitudes between -20 and -50 deg (well correlated with the IRIS data), and disk-center position (corrected for the observed radio asymmetry) in good agreement with that found on the basis of the outer contours of the image.

By combining the interferometric 2.7-mm data sets obtained for Saturn near opposition in June 1984, for a ring opening angle of 19 deg, and June 1985, when the angle was 23 deg, brightness maps have been obtained whose resolution is of the order of 6 arcsec, indicating the presence of ring flux from the ansae in the 3-mm wavelength region. Approximately 6 K of the ring flux appears to be due to scattered planetary emission, implying an about 13-K intrinsic thermal component. In conjunction with Voyager radio occultation data on ring particle size distributions, these results are judged to be in keeping with a water ice primary composition for the ring particles.

Observations of the 2.6-mm CO emission of the bipolar nebular CRL 2688, obtained with resolution 7 arcsec using the mm-wave interferometer at Owens Valley during December 1982-June 1983, are reported. The emission of a 10 x 15-arcsec core, centered on the optical reflection nebula and probably surrounded by a large cloud of cooler gas, is found to have a main-axis velocity gradient of 3 km/s arcsec and an excitation temperature of about 70 K.

The positions of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter were obtained in the VLBI radio reference frame by measuring the position of a satellite (natural or artificial) of each planet relative to an extragalactic source in the radio catalogue. From the results for Mars and Venus it is concluded that the offset in right ascension of the radio frame from the dynamical equinox defined in DE200 is 0.00 sec +/- 0.04 sec. The observations for Jupiter imply a correction to its position from DE200 of -0.18 sec +/- 0.04 sec in right ascension and -0.06 +/- 0.05 sec in declination on 1983 April 29. The right ascension of Jupiter relative to the inner planets has been measured independently using Doppler tracking data near Jupiter encounter from Pioneers 10 and 11 and from Voyagers 1 and 2 by tying the tracking station positions, through previous spacecraft missions, to the DE200 ephemerides of the inner planets. This technique yielded a correction to Jupiter's right ascension of -0.22 +/- 0.05 sec, in good agreement with the results from the direct radio measurements.

Observations of Uranus at wavelengths of 2 and 6 centimeters with the Very Large Array were made in 1980 and 1981. The resulting maps of brightness temperature show a subsolar symmetry at 2 centimeters but a near-polar symmetry at 6 centimeters. The 6-centimeter maps show an increase in temperature from equator to pole with some evidence for a warm 'ring' surrounding the north pole. The disk-average temperatures (147 + or - 5 K and 230 + or - 6 K at 2 and 6 centimeters, respectively) are distinctly lower than recently reported values; these results suggest that the secular increase in temperature reported during the last 15 years has been reversed. The variations in brightness temperature probably reflect variations in ammonia abundance in the planet's atmosphere, but the mechanism driving these variations is still unclear.

VLA maps of four different faces of Jupiter made with a resolution of about 0.3 Jovian radius show new features of the radiation belt emission. A synchrotron model which reproduces these features serves to define the major characteristics of the relativistic electrons in the radiation belt. The observations provide the best determination to date of the atmospheric emission at 1.5 GHz and yield a disk brightness temperature of 425 + or - 100 K.

Radio observations of Io taken with the VLA at 2, 6, and 21 cm show flux densities of 11.6 + or - 0.2 mJy, and less than 0.5 mJy, respectively, where the latter is a 2 sigma upper limit. These flux densities correspond to Io disk brightness temperatures of T(b) (2 cm) = 98 + or - 17 K, T(b) (6 cm) = 85 + or - 16 K, and T(b) (21 cm) less than 400 K, respectively. These radio brightness temperatures are consistent with thermal emission expected from Io's surface on the basis of its infrared brightness temperature and its radio emissivity derived from radar studies. No evidence for nonthermal radio emission from Io is found, such as has been reported by Mingaliev et al (1979). By using a model for the generation of synchrotron emission at 21 cm by energetic electrons in a hypothetical Io magnetosphere, an upper limit of Io's dipole magnetic moment less than 2 x 10 to the 25th gauss/cu cm is found.

Mesospheric CO was observed in absorption against the moon in early December 1979 at a wavelength of 1.3 mm and in early December 1980 at 2.6 mm with the 10.4-m millimeter wavelength telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. No significant change in the column density of CO above about 65 km is found between the 1979 and 1980 observations. Comparison with other published spectra of mesospheric CO suggests a large seasonal variation (about a factor of 2-3) in the column density of CO above 65 km, with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. It is concluded that the understanding of CO in the mesosphere can be improved with earth-based microwave measurements, but data with high signal-to-noise ratios must be obtained.

Passive radio measurements of Saturn's rings are reviewed and interferometric measurements at 2.7 mm are presented. The brightness temperatures of the A plus B rings at a rings angle of B = 10 deg are found to be 17 and 38 K in separate experiments, the latter being the more reliable. Results are interpreted in terms of ring particle emission and scattering of the planet's disk emission by the rings.

Parkes, Owens Valley and Goldstone measurements are presented, showing the variation with central meridian longitude of the position angle of Jupiter's linearly polarized synchrotron emission at wavelengths of 21, 13, 11 and 6 cm; the observations span a total time interval greater than one Jovian orbital period. The form of the position angle versus longitude curve shows a slight dependence on wavelength and epoch. The epoch dependence appears to reflect Jupiter's changing aspect with respect to the earth. The observations yield a Jovian rotation period agreeing to within about 0.02 s with that derived from the decametric burst measurements, implying a highly stable inner magnetic field configuration.

The historical development of the study of Jupiter radio emission is considered and a description of the observational data is presented, taking into account the spectrum of the continuous microwave radiation, the polarization of the microwave radiation, the brightness distribution, the rotation-related variability, variations related to the zenocentric declination of the earth, and other time variations. The separation of radio emission into thermal and nonthermal components is discussed and interpretations of the two components are provided. A comparison of earth-based radio measurements with Pioneer 10 and 11 data is conducted and the future of earth-based radio observations is evaluated.

We observed the radio emission of Callisto with a three-element interferometer at the time of the 1973 opposition of Jupiter. Special care was taken to remove the residual, unresolved contribution from Jupiter itself in the antenna side lobes. The resulting disk temperature at a wavelength of 3.71 centimeters, assuming a radius of 2500 + or - 75 kilometers for Callisto, was 101 + or - 25 K. This temperature is much more consistent with emission from a simple dielectric sphere than the considerably higher temperatures that have been reported for wavelengths of 3.5 and 8.2 millimeters.

Interferometric observations of Saturn and its rings at a wavelength of 1.30 cm are presented in an attempt to place constraints upon the amount of thermal radiation emitted by the ring particles. Model-fitting and aperture synthesis techniques were used to analyze the data obtained on nine baselines at a frequency of 23 GHz. Ring optical depth is found to be close to that observed at visible wavelengths, while ring brightness temperature is only 7 + or - 1 K, requiring the ring particles to be nearly conservative scatterers at this wavelength and implying an upper limit of 2.4 m to the radius of a typical ring particle with a lower limit of 0.95 to its single scattering albedo. An observed difference between planetary radii observed at 1.30 and 3.71 cm is interpreted in terms of limb darkening and found to be marginally different from the predictions of atmospheric models in which NH3 is the principal source of microwave opacity.

A model is presented of the atmosphere and surface of Venus which best fits in the least-squares sense the available radio-brightness, radar cross-section, radio interferometric, and Mariner 5 and 10 radio occultation observations. The determinations of the radius of the planet obtained by others from radar time-delay measurements are included in the data set. The values of the adjusted parameters are: molar fraction of CO2 = 95 plus or minus 3%; fraction of combined nitrogen and argon = 5 plus or minus 3%; total atmospheric opacity at a wavelength of 1 cm = 19.4 plus or minus 1.3; mean radius of the surface = 6050.7 plus or minus 0.8 km; mean dielectric constant of the surface = 4.1 plus or minus 0.2, and percentage of total opacity due to chemical species other than CO2 = 45 plus or minus 12. The model temperature and pressure at the mean surface are 755 K and 91.4 atm, respectively.

Aperture synthesis maps of Saturn and its ring system are presented. The maps are free from most of the assumptions about the brightness structure of Saturn that were used in a previous model-fitting analysis. Generally, the maps confirm the model-fitting results, with the exception that the brightness temperature of the planet determined by the models is greater than it needs to be in order to match the contours in the map. This discrepancy is attributed to random errors in the phase of the visibility function.

Interferometric observations of Saturn and its rings obtained at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory at a wavelength of 3.71 cm (8085 MHz) are presented. Models of the microwave brightness structure of the Saturn system are fit to the observations in order to estimate the brightness temperatures of the planet and its rings. The models allowed making estimates of the brightness temperatures and optical depths of the A, B, and C rings. The ring brightness temperatures and optical depths are compared with a physical ring model of isotropic scatterers in a layer which is many particles thick. The observations are consistent with particles that conservatively scatter the thermal emission from Saturn to the earth and emit no thermal radiation of their own. However, the particle single-scattering albedo that would be most consistent with the observations is slightly less than unity but probably greater than 0.95. There is evidence indicating that the ring particles must be at least a few centimeters in size.

Observations of an increase of the brightness temperature of Venus towards the poles are reported. Measurements of the deviations from circular symmetry of radio emission at 6 cm were made with a two-element interferometer near a time of inferior conjunction with Venus. The projected baseline lengths of the planet at the first null of the visibility function imply that the planet is either larger (by about 7 km) or brighter (by about 5 K) at the poles than at the equator. Possible causes of polar heating include a strong downwelling of the Venusian atmosphere at the poles and a slight topographical flattening relative to the gravitational equipotentials. Calculations of brightness temperature variations for a planet with a topographical oblateness of about 0.6 km are shown to agree with the observations, however the possibility of this oblateness being due to a fossil rotational bulge is argued against.

Interferometry of Jupiter in decimeter range

Radio interferometric measurements of Saturn and Saturn's rings are explained. The measurements are limited to Mu is greater than or equal to 3. Data are also given on visibility functions, flux density, and brightness temperature.

Saturn was observed with an interferometer at a wavelength of 21.1 cm in an effort to determine whether any of the emission at this wavelength originates from outside the area of the visible disk. The result, in terms of upper limits, is that no more than 6% can come from the visible rings nor more than 5% from a radiation belt, assuming certain brightness distribution models that are described. The latter limit implies that the volume emissivity of a hypothetical Saturn radiation belt has an upper limit of only about 1% of that for Jupiter in corresponding regions. The measured disk temperature is 232 plus or minus 18 K.

The disk temperature of Venus was measured at 608 MHz near the inferior conjunction of 1972, and a value of 498 plus or minus 33 K was obtained using a nominal CKL flux-density scale. The result is consistent with earlier measurements, but has a much smaller uncertainty. Our theoretical model prediction is larger by a factor of 1.21 plus or minus 0.09. This discrepancy has been noticed previously for frequencies below 1400 MHz, but was generally disregarded because of the large observational uncertainties. No way could be found to change the model to produce agreement without causing a conflict with well-established properties of Venus. Thus it is suggested that the flux-density scale may require an upward revision, at least near this frequency, in excess of what has previously been considered likely.

The decimetric emission consists partly of thermal radiation from the planetary disk and partly of nonthermal radiation from a region of larger angular extent and is thought to result from synchrotron emission by relativistic electrons in the magnetic field. Four topics relating to the decimetric emission are discussed. (1) A comparison is made of maps giving detailed brightness contours. One was obtained for epoch 1963.8 and was at a wavelength of 10.4 cm. The second was for epoch 1967.2 at 21.3 cm. (2) Interferometric data at 21.1 cm taken in April 1968 and May 1979 indicate that the emission centroid is fixed in Jupiter and rotates with it. (3) Circular polarization observations are described and are used to obtain a surface magnetic field strength at the equator between 3.2 and 15.2 gauss. (4) An upper limit on the Faraday rotation is used to set an upper limit on the density of thermal electrons surrounding Jupiter, and uncertainties in the results are discussed.
