Toroidal classification and geometric duality in quantum spin systems is presented. Through our classification and duality, we reveal that various bipartite quantum features in magnon-systems can manifest equivalently in both bipartite ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials, based upon the availability of relevant Hamiltonian parameters. Additionally, the results highlight the antiferromagnetic regime as an ultra-fast dual counterpart to the ferromagnetic regime, both exhibiting identical capabilities for quantum spintronics and technological applications. Concrete illustrations are provided, demonstrating how splitting and squeezing types of two-mode magnon quantum correlations can be realized across ferro- and antiferromagnetic regimes., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The impact of the local chemical environment on the Gilbert damping in the binary alloy Fe$_{100-x}$Co$_{x}$ is investigated, using computations based on density functional theory. By varying the alloy composition x as well as Fe/Co atom positions we reveal that the effective damping of the alloy is highly sensitive to the nearest neighbor environment, especially to the amount of Co and the average distance between Co-Co atoms at nearest neighbor sites. Both lead to a significant local increase (up to an order of magnitude) of the effective Gilbert damping, originating mainly from variations of the density of states at the Fermi energy. In a global perspective (i.e., making a configuration average for a real material), those differences in damping are masked by statistical averages. When low-temperature explicit atomistic dynamics simulations are performed, the impact of short-range disorder on local dynamics is observed to also alter the overall relaxation rate. Our results illustrate the possibility of local chemical engineering of the Gilbert damping, which may stimulate the study of new ways to tune and control materials aiming for spintronics applications.

YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ consists of two types of Mn-based kagome planes stacked along $c$-axis having a complex magnetic interactions. We report a spin reconstruction in YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ from ferromagnet (FM) into a combination of two incommensurate spin spirals (SSs) originating from two different type of Mn kagome planes driven by frustrated magnetic exchanges along the $c$-axis with inclusion of Hubbard U. The pitch angle and wave vector of the incommensurate SSs are $\sim$89.3$^{\circ}$ and $\sim$ (0 0 0.248) respectively which are in excellent agreement with experiment. We employed an effective model Hamiltonian constructed out of exchange interactions to capture experimentally observed non-equivalent nature of the two incommensurate SSs which also explain FM-SS crossover due to antiferromagntic spin exchange with correlation. We further report the existence of topological magnon with spin-orbit coupling in incommensurate SS phase of YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ by calculating the topological invariants and Berry curvature profile. The location of Dirac magnon in energy landscape at 73 meV matches with another experimental report. We demonstrate the accuracy of our results by highlighting experimental features in YMn$_6$Sn$_6$.

Femtosecond laser pulses can be used to induce ultrafast changes of the magnetization in magnetic materials. Several microscopic mechanisms have been proposed to explain the observations, including the transport of ultrashort spin-polarized hot-electrons (SPHE). Such ultrafast spin currents find growing interest because of the recent challenges in ultrafast spintronics however they are only poorly characterized. One of the key challenges is to characterize the spin-polarized ultrafast currents and the microscopic mechanisms behind SPHE induced manipulation of the magnetization, especially in the case of technologically relevant ferrimagnetic alloys. Here, we have used a combined approach using time- and element-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and theoretical calculations based on atomistic spin-dynamics simulations to address the ultrafast transfer of the angular momentum from spin-polarized currents into ferrimagnetic Fe74Gd26 films and the concomitant reduction of sub-lattice magnetization. Our study shows that using a Co/Pt multilayer as a polarizer in a spin-valve structure, the SPHE drives the demagnetization of the two sub-lattices of the Fe74Gd26 film. This behaviour is explained based on two physical mechanisms, i.e., spin transfer torque and thermal fluctuations induced by the SPHE. We provide a quantitative description of the heat transfer of the ultrashort SPHE pulse to the Fe74Gd26 films, as well as the degree of spin-polarization of the SPHE current density responsible for the observed magnetization dynamics. Our work finally characterizes the spin-polarization of the SPHEs revealing unexpected opposite spin polarization to the Co magnetization, explaining our experimental results., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) and Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equations play an essential role for describing the dynamics of magnetization in solids. While a quantum analog of the LL dynamics has been proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 147201 (2013)], the corresponding quantum version of LLG remains unknown. Here, we propose such a quantum LLG equation that inherently conserves purity of the quantum state. We examine the quantum LLG dynamics of a dimer consisting of two interacting spin-1/2 particles. Our analysis reveals that, in the case of ferromagnetic coupling, the evolution of initially uncorrelated spins mirrors the classical LLG dynamics. However, in the antiferromagnetic scenario, we observe pronounced deviations from classical behavior, underscoring the unique dynamics of becoming a spinless state, which is non-locally correlated. Moreover, when considering spins that are initially correlated, our study uncovers an unusual form of transient quantum correlation dynamics, which differ significantly from what is typically seen in open quantum systems.

Despite extensive research on magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions, a significant challenge remains in crafting nontrivial high-order skyrmionic textures with varying, or even tailor-made, topologies. We address this challenge, by focusing on a construction pathway of skyrmionics metamaterial within a monolayer thin film and suggest several promising lattice-like, flakes-like, and cell-like skyrmionic metamaterials that are surprisingly stable. Central to our approach is the concept of 'simulated controlled assembly', in short, a protocol inspired by 'click chemistry' that allows for positioning topological magnetic structures where one likes, and then allowing for energy minimization to elucidate the stability. Utilizing high-throughput atomistic-spin-dynamic (ASD) simulations alongside state-of-the-art AI-driven tools, we have isolated skyrmions (topological charge Q=1), antiskyrmions (Q=-1), and skyrmionium (Q=0). These entities serve as foundational 'skyrmionic building blocks' to forming reported intricate textures. In this work, two key contributions are introduced to the field of skyrmionic systems. First, we present a novel method for integrating control assembly protocols for the stabilization and investigation of topological magnets, which marks a significant advancement in the ability to explore new skyrmionic textures. Second, we report on the discovery of skyrmionic metamaterials, which shows a plethora of complex topologies that are possible to investigate theoretically and experimentally.

We have investigated the dynamical magnetic properties of the V-based kagome stibnite compounds by combining the ab-initio calculated magnetic parameters of a spin Hamiltonian like inter-site exchange parameters, magnetocrystalline anisotropy and site projected magnetic moments, with full-fledged simulations of atomistic spin-dynamics. Our calculations reveal that in addition to a ferromagnetic order along the [001] direction, the system hosts a complex landscape of magnetic configurations comprised of commensurate and incommensurate spin-spirals along the [010] direction. The presence of such chiral magnetic textures may be the key to solve the mystery about the origin of the experimentally observed inherent breaking of the C6 rotational symmetry- and the time-reversal symmetry., Comment: Accepted In Physical Review B

The V-based kagome systems AV3Sb5 (A = Cs, Rb and K) are unique by virtue of the intricate interplay of non-trivial electronic structure, topology and intriguing fermiology, rendering them to be a playground of many mutually dependent exotic phases like charge-order and superconductivity. Despite numerous recent studies, the interconnection of magnetism and other complex collective phenomena in these systems has yet not arrived at any conclusion. Using first-principles tools, we demonstrate that their electronic structures, complex fermiologies and phonon dispersions are strongly influenced by the interplay of dynamic electron correlations, non-trivial spin-polarization and spin-orbit coupling. An investigation of the first-principles-derived inter-site magnetic exchanges with the complementary analysis of q-dependence of the electronic response functions and the electron-phonon coupling indicate that the system conforms as a frustrated spin-cluster, where the occurrence of the charge-order phase is intimately related to the mechanism of electron-phonon coupling, rather than the Fermi-surface nesting., Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Letters

We developed a method which performs the coupled adiabatic spin and lattice dynamics based on the tight-binding electronic structure model, where the intrinsic magnetic field and ionic forces are calculated from the converged self-consistent electronic structure at every time step. By doing so, this method allows us to explore limits where the physics described by a parameterized spin-lattice Hamiltonian is no longer accurate. We demonstrate how the lattice dynamics is strongly influenced by the underlying magnetic configuration, where disorder is able to induce significant lattice distortions. The presented method requires significantly less computational resources than ab initio methods, such as time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Compared to parameterized Hamiltonian-based methods, it also describes more accurately the dynamics of the coupled spin and lattice degrees of freedom, which becomes important outside of the regime of small lattice and spin fluctuations., Comment: 15 pages, 8 Figures

PdFe/Ir(111) has attracted tremendous attention for next-generation spintronics devices due to existence of magnetic skyrmions with the external magnetic field. Our density functional theoretical calculations in combination with spin dynamics simulation suggest that the spin spiral phase in fcc stacked PdFe/Ir(111) flips into the skyrmion lattice phase around B$_{ext} \sim$ 6 T. This leads to the microscopic understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviours affected by the intrinsic spin-lattice couplings (SLCs) in this skyrmion material for magneto-mechanical properties. Here we calculate fully relativistic SLC parameters from first principle computations and investigate the effect of SLC on dynamical magnetic interactions in skyrmion multilayers PdFe/Ir(111). The exchange interactions arising from next nearest-neighbors (NN) in this material are highly frustrated and responsible for enhancing skyrmion stability. We report the larger spin-lattice effect on both dynamical Heisenberg exchanges and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions for next NN compared to NN which is in contrast with recently observed spin-lattice effect in bulk bcc Fe and CrI$_3$ monolayer. Based on our analysis, we find that the effective measures of SLCs in fcc (hcp) stacking of PdFe/Ir(111) are $\sim 2.71 ( \sim 2.36)$ and $\sim 14.71 ( \sim21.89)$ times stronger for NN and next NN respectively, compared to bcc Fe. The linear regime of displacement for SLC parameters is $\leq$ 0.02 {\AA} which is 0.72\% of the lattice constant for PdFe/Ir(111). A spin Hamiltonian, which characterizes interatomic interactions between spin moments, is highly valuable in predicting and comprehending the magnetic properties of materials. A deeper understanding of the microscopic origin of magnetic interactions can open new pathways toward realizing nanometer-scale systems for future spintronic devices. Here, we explore a method for explicitly calculating interatomic exchange interactions in non-collinear configurations of magnetic materials considering only a bilinear spin Hamiltonian in a local scenario. Based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations of dimers adsorbed on metallic surfaces, and with a focus on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which is essential for stabilizing chiral non-collinear magnetic states, we discuss the interpretation of the DMI when decomposed into microscopic electron and spin densities and currents. We clarify the distinct origins of spin currents induced in the system and their connection to the DMI. In addition, we reveal how non-collinearity affects the usual DMI, which is solely induced by spin-orbit coupling, and DMI-like interactions brought about by non-collinearity. We explain how the dependence of the DMI on the magnetic configuration establishes a connection between high-order magnetic interactions, enabling the transition from a local to a global spin Hamiltonian., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We present a metaheuristic conditional neural-network-based method aimed at identifying physically interesting metastable states in a potential energy surface of high rugosity. To demonstrate how this method works, we identify and analyze spin textures with topological charge $Q$ ranging from 1 to $-13$ (where antiskyrmions have $Q<0$) in the Pd/Fe/Ir(111) system, which we model using a classical atomistic spin Hamiltonian based on parameters computed from density functional theory. To facilitate the harvest of relevant spin textures, we make use of the newly developed Segment Anything Model (SAM). Spin textures with $Q$ ranging from $-3$ to $-6$ are further analyzed using finite-temperature spin-dynamics simulations. We observe that for temperatures up to around 20\,K, lifetimes longer than 200\,ps are predicted, and that when these textures decay, new topological spin textures are formed. We also find that the relative stability of the spin textures depend linearly on the topological charge, but only when comparing the most stable antiskyrmions for each topological charge. In general, the number of holes (i.e., non-self-intersecting curves that define closed domain walls in the structure) in the spin texture is an important predictor of stability -- the more holes, the less stable is the texture. Methods for systematic identification and characterization of complex metastable skyrmionic textures -- such as the one demonstrated here -- are highly relevant for advancements in the field of topological spintronics.

The detection of magnons and their quantum properties, especially in antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials, is a substantial step to realize many ambitious advances in the study of nanomagnetism and the development of energy efficient quantum technologies. The recent development of hybrid systems based on superconducting circuits provides the possibility of engineering quantum sensors that exploit different degrees of freedom. Here, we examine the magnon-photon-transmon hybridisation based on bipartite AFM materials, which gives rise to an effective coupling between a transmon qubit and magnons in a bipartite AFM. We demonstrate how magnetically invisible magnon modes, their chiralities and quantum properties such as nonlocality and two-mode magnon entanglement in bipartite AFMs can be characterized through the Rabi frequency of the superconducting transmon qubit.

Magnon diffuse scattering (MDS) signals could be studied with high spatial resolution in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), thanks to recent technological progress in electron energy loss spectroscopy. However, detecting MDS signals in STEM is challenging due to their overlap with stronger thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) signals. In bcc Fe at 300 K, MDS signals greater than or comparable to TDS signals occur under the central Bragg disk, into a currently inaccesible energy-loss region. Therefore, to detect MDS in STEM, it is necessary to find conditions in which TDS and MDS signals can be separated. Temperature may be a key factor due to the distinct thermal signatures of magnon and phonon signals. In this work, we present a study on the effects of temperature on MDS and TDS in bcc Fe -- considering a detector outside the central Bragg disk and a fixed convergent electron probe -- using the frozen phonon and frozen magnon multislice methods. Our study reveals that neglecting the effects of atomic vibrations causes the MDS signal to grow approximately linearly up to the Curie temperature of Fe, after which it exhibits less variation. The MDS signal displays an alternating behavior due to dynamical diffraction, instead of increasing monotonically as a function of thickness. Including the effects of atomic vibrations through a complex atomic electrostatic potential causes the linear growth of the MDS signal to change to a non-linear behavior that exhibits a predominant peak for a sample of thickness 16.072 nm at 1100 K. In contrast, the TDS signal grows more linearly than the MDS signal but still exhibits appreciable dynamical diffraction effects. The spectrum of magnon excitations in magnetic materials can be obtained exactly from the transverse dynamic magnetic susceptibility, which is however in practice numerically expensive. Many ab initio approaches therefore consider instead the adiabatic magnon spectrum, which assumes a separation of time scales of magnons and electronic excitations. There exist two alternative implementations for adiabatic magnon spectra: one based on the magnetic force theorem (MFT) and the other with a constraining field that enforces static non-collinear spin configurations. We benchmark both implementations against the exact magnon spectrum of an exactly solvable mean-field model. While both adiabatic methods are equally valid in the low magnon energy and strong Stoner coupling limits, we find that the constraining field method performs better than the MFT in both the cases of strong Stoner coupling and high magnon energies,while the MFT performs better for combined weak coupling and low magnon energies., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Time resolved measurements of the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation reveal that, in the {\it 3d} ferromagnets Fe, Co and Ni, the amplitude of the demagnetization increases linearly with the fluence of the light. We rationalize this phenomenon as being linearly driven by the increase in temperature, the electron-phonon and electron-magnon scattering, and a reduction of the inter-atomic exchange. The amplitude of the latter phenomenon, which until the present study has been widely overlooked, is obtained through \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations, and is argued to be the principal source of demagnetization in Ni and Co, while still contributing largely in Fe.

We study the influence of non-local damping on magnon properties of Fe, Co, Ni and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ ($x=30\%,50\%$) alloys. The Gilbert damping parameter is typically considered as a local scalar both in experiment and in theoretical modelling. However, recent works have revealed that Gilbert damping is a non-local quantity that allows for energy dissipation between atomic sites. With the Gilbert damping parameters calculated from a state-of-the-art real-space electronic structure method, magnon lifetimes are evaluated from spin dynamics and linear response, where a good agreement is found between these two methods. It is found that non-local damping affects the magnon lifetimes in different ways depending on the system. Specifically, we find that in Fe, Co, and Ni the non-local damping decreases the magnon lifetimes, while in $\rm Fe_{70}Co_{30}$ and Fe$_{50}$Co$_{50}$ an opposite, non-local damping effect is observed, and our data show that it is much stronger in the former.

We report the existence of entangled steady-states in bipartite quantum magnonic systems at elevated temperatures. We consider dissipative dynamics of two magnon modes in a bipartite antiferromagnet, subjected to interaction with a phonon mode and an external rotating magnetic field. To quantify the bipartite magnon-magnon entanglement, we use entanglement negativity and compute its dependence on temperature and magnetic field. We provide evidence that the coupling between magnon and phonon modes is necessary for the entanglement, and that, for any given phonon frequency and magnon-phonon coupling rate, there are always ranges of the magnetic field amplitudes and frequencies for which magnon-magnon entanglement persists at room temperature., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Skyrmion stabilization in novel magnetic systems with the B20 crystal structure is reported here, primarily based on theoretical results. The focus is on the effect of alloying on the 3d sublattice of the B20 structure by substitution of heavier 4d and 5d elements, with the ambition to tune the spin-orbit coupling and its influence on magnetic interactions. State-of-the-art methods based on density functional theory are used to calculate both isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions. Significant enhancement of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is reported for 5d-doped FeSi and CoSi, accompanied by a large modification of the spin stiffness and spiralization. Micromagnetic simulations coupled to atomistic spin-dynamics and ab initio magnetic interactions reveal a helical ground state and field-induced skyrmions for all these systems. Especially small skyrmions $\sim$50 nm are predicted for Co$_{0.75}$Os$_{0.25}$Si, compared to $\sim$148 nm for Fe$_{0.75}$Co$_{0.25}$Si. Convex-hull analysis suggests that all B20 compounds considered here are structurally stable at elevated temperatures and should be possible to synthesize. This prediction is confirmed experimentally by synthesis and structural analysis of the Ru-doped CoSi systems discussed here, both in powder and in single-crystal forms., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, 9 tables

We examine entanglement of thermal states for spin-12 dimers in external magnetic fields. Entanglement transition in the temperature-magnetic field plane demonstrates a duality in spin-spin interactions. This identifies dual categories of symmetric and anti-symmetric dimers with each category classified into toric entanglement classes. The entanglement transition line is preserved from each toric entanglement class to its dual toric class. We consider an implementation of the adiabatic spin dynamics approach in a tight-binding description of the electronic structure. The adiabatic approximation for spin-degrees of freedom assumes that the faster electronic degrees of freedom are always in a quasi-equilibrium state, which significantly reduces the numerical complexity in comparison to the full electron dynamics. Non-collinear magnetic configurations are stabilized by a constraining field, which allows to directly obtain the effective magnetic field from the negative of the constraining field. While the dynamics are shown to conserve energy, we demonstrate that adiabatic spin dynamics does not conserve the total spin angular momentum when the lengths of the magnetic moments are allowed to change, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. Furthermore, we develop a method to extract an effective two-spin exchange interaction from the energy curvature tensor of non-collinear states, which we calculate at each time step of the numerical simulations. We demonstrate the effect of non-collinearity on this effective exchange and limitations due to multi-spin interactions in strongly non-collinear configurations beyond the regime where the Heisenberg model is valid. The Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ intermetallic compound has been studied intensely for several decades; its low-temperature state is reported experimentally either as ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic by different authors, with a measured ordering temperature ranging within a hundred Kelvin. The existing theoretical investigations overestimate the experimental total magnetic moment of Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ by 20-40 % and predict a ferromagnetic ground state. By means of first-principle electronic structure calculations, we show that the total magnetic moment of Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ can be reproduced within the Local Density Approximation while functionals based on the Generalized Gradient Approximation fail. Atomistic spin dynamics simulations are shown to capture the change in the magnetic state of Ce$_2$Fe$_{17}$ with temperature, and closely replicate the reported helical structure that appears in some of the experimental investigations.

Since thermal fluctuations become more important as dimensions shrink, it is expected that low-dimensional magnets are more sensitive to lattice distortions and phonons than bulk systems are. Here we present a fully relativistic first-principles study on the spin-lattice coupling, i.e. how the magnetic interactions depend on local lattice distortions, of the prototypical two-dimensional ferromagnet CrI$_3$. We extract an effective measure of the spin-lattice coupling in CrI$_3$ which is up to ten times larger than what is found for bcc Fe. The magnetic exchange interactions, including Heisenberg and relativistic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, are sensitive both to the in-plane motion of Cr atoms and out-of-plane motion of ligand atoms. We find that significant magnetic pair interactions change sign from ferromagnetic (FM) to anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) for atomic displacements larger than 0.16 {\AA}. We explain the observed strong spin-lattice coupling by analyzing the orbital decomposition of isotropic exchange interactions, involving different crystal-field-split Cr$-3d$ orbitals. The competition between the AFM t$_{2g}$ - t$_{2g}$ and FM t$_{2g}$ - e$_{g}$ contributions depends on the bond angle formed by Cr and I atoms as well as Cr-Cr distance. In particular, if a Cr atom is displaced, the FM-AFM sign change when the I-Cr-I bond angle approaches 90$^\circ$. The obtained spin-lattice coupling constants, along with the microscopic orbital analysis can act as a guiding principle for further studies of the thermodynamic properties and combined magnon-phonon excitations in two-dimensional magnets.

Temperature in thermodynamics is synonymous with disorder, and responsible for ultimately destroying ordered phases. Here, we show an unusual magnetic transition where, with increasing the temperature of elemental neodymium, long-range multi-Q magnetic order emerges from a self-induced spin glass. Using temperature-dependent spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we characterize the local Q order in the spin-Q glass phase and quantify the emergence of long-range multi-Q order with increasing temperature. We develop two distinct analysis tools, which enable the quantification of the glass transition temperature, based on measured spatially-dependent magnetization. We compare these observations with atomic spin dynamics simulations, which reproduce the qualitative observation of a phase transition from a low-temperature spin glass phase to an intermediate ordered multi-Q phase. These simulations trace the origin of the unexpected high temperature order in weakened frustration driven by temperature-dependent sublattice correlations. These findings constitute an example of order from disorder and provide a rich platform to study magnetization dynamics in a self-induced spin glass.

Quantum magnonics is an emerging research field, with great potential for applications in magnon based hybrid systems and quantum information processing. Quantum correlation, such as entanglement, is a central resource in many quantum information protocols that naturally comes about in any study toward quantum technologies. This applies also to quantum magnonics. Here, we investigate antiferromagnets in which sublattices with ferromagnetic interactions can have two different magnon modes, and we show how this may lead to experimentally detectable bipartite continuous variable magnon-magnon entanglement. The entanglement can be fully characterized via a single squeezing parameter, or, equivalently, entanglement parameter. The clear relation between the entanglement parameter and the Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) function of the ground state opens up for experimental observation of magnon-magnon continuous variable entanglement and EPR non-locality. We propose a practical experimental realization to detect the EPR function of the ground state, in a setting that relies on magnon-photon interaction in a microwave cavity., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The scenario of a metal-insulator transition driven by the onset of antiferromagnetic order in NaOsO$_3$ calls for a trustworthy derivation of the underlying effective spin Hamiltonian. To determine the latter we rely on {\it ab initio} electronic-structure calculations, linear spin-wave theory, and comparison to experimental data of the corresponding magnon spectrum. We arrive this way to Heisenberg couplings that are $\lesssim$45\% to$\lesssim$63\% smaller than values presently proposed in the literature and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the region of 15\% of the Heisenberg exchange $J$. These couplings together with the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction and single-ion magnetocrystalline anisotropy successfully reproduce the magnon dispersion obtained by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements. In particular, the spin-wave gap fully agrees with the measured one. We find that the spin-wave gap is defined from a subtle interplay between the single-ion anisotropy, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange and the symmetric anisotropic exchange interactions. The results reported here underpin the local-moment description of NaOsO$_3$, when it comes to analyzing the magnetic excitation spectra. Interestingly, this comes about from a microscopic theory that describes the electron system as Bloch states, adjusted to a mean-field solution to Hubbard-like interactions., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We present a theory and a simulation of thermal diffuse scattering due to the excitation of magnons in scanning transmission electron microscopy. The calculations indicate that magnons can present atomic contrast when detected by electron energy-loss spectroscopy using atomic-size electron beams. The results presented here indicate that the intensity of the magnon diffuse scattering in bcc iron at 300~K is 4 orders of magnitude weaker than the intensity of thermal diffuse scattering arising from atomic vibrations. In an energy range where the phonon and magnon dispersions do not overlap, a monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope equipped with direct electron detectors for spectroscopy is expected to resolve the magnon spectral signatures., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The manipulation of topologically protected field configurations, already predicted and experimentally observed in non-centrosymmetric magnets, as skyrmions, merons and antimerons could definitely have potential applications in logic gate operations as carriers of information. Here, we present and elaborate a proof of concept on how to construct a three-input non-canonical majority gate on a kagome ferromagnet lacking inversion symmetry. By taking advantage of the existence of edge modes in a Kagome magnet, it is possible to create topological excitations as merons and antimerons at the edge of the material. Using atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we determine the precise physical conditions for the creation and annihilation of merons and antimerons and, in a second stage, we describe the majority gate functionality., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We consider the mapping of tight-binding electronic structure theory to a local spin Hamiltonian, based on the adiabatic approximation for spin degrees of freedom in itinerant-electron systems. Local spin Hamiltonians are introduced in order to describe the energy landscape of small magnetic fluctuations, locally around a given spin configuration. They are designed for linear response near a given magnetic state and in general insufficient to capture arbitrarily strong deviations of spin configurations from the equilibrium. In order to achieve this mapping, we include a linear term in the local spin Hamiltonian that, together with the usual bilinear exchange tensor, produces an improved accuracy of effective magnetic Weiss fields for non-collinear states. We also provide examples from tight-binding electronic structure theory, where our implementation of the calculation of exchange constants is based on constraining fields that stabilize an out-of-equilibrium spin configuration. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, as well as symmetric anisotropic exchange, are important ingredients for stabilizing topologically non-trivial magnetic textures, such as, e.g., skyrmions, merons and hopfions. These types of textures are currently in focus from a fundamental science perspective and they are also discussed in the context of future spintronics information technology. While the theoretical understanding of the Heisenberg exchange interactions is well developed, it is still a challenge to access, from first principles theory, the DM interaction as well as the symmetric anisotropic exchange, which both require a fully-relativistic treatment of the electronic structure, in magnetic systems where substantial electron-electron correlations are present. Here, we present results of a theoretical framework which allows to compute these interactions in any given system and demonstrate its performance for several selected cases, for both bulk and low-dimensional systems. We address several representative cases, including the bulk systems CoPt and FePt, the B20 compounds MnSi and FeGe as well as the low-dimensional transition metal bilayers Co/Pt(111) and Mn/W(001). The effect of electron-electron correlations is analyzed using dynamical mean-field theory on the level of the spin-polarized $T$-matrix + fluctuating exchange (SPTF) approximation, as regards the strength and character of the isotropic (Heisenberg) and anisotropic (DM) interactions in relation to the underlying electronic structure. Our method can be combined with more advanced techniques for treating correlations, e.g., quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization methods for the impurity solver of dynamical mean-field theory. We find that correlation-induced changes of the DM interaction can be rather significant, with up to five-fold modifications in the most distinctive case., Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures

It is generally accepted that the effective magnetic field acting on a magnetic moment is given by the gradient of the energy with respect to the magnetization. However, in ab initio spin dynamics within the adiabatic approximation, the effective field is also known to be exactly the negative of the constraining field, which acts as a Lagrange multiplier to stabilize an out-of-equilibrium, non-collinear magnetic configuration. We show that for Hamiltonians without mean-field parameters both of these fields are exactly equivalent, while there can be a finite difference for mean-field Hamiltonians. For density-functional theory (DFT) calculations the constraining field obtained from the auxiliary Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian is not exactly equivalent to the DFT energy gradient. This inequality is highly relevant for both ab initio spin dynamics and the ab initio calculation of exchange constants and effective magnetic Hamiltonians. We argue that the effective magnetic field and exchange constants have the highest accuracy in DFT when calculated from the energy gradient and not from the constraining field., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Continuous variable entanglement between magnon modes in Heisenberg antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia (DM) interaction is examined. Different bosonic modes are identified, which allows to establish a hierarchy of magnon entanglement in the ground state. We argue that entanglement between magnon modes is determined by a simple lattice specific factor, together with the ratio of the strengths of the DM and Heisenberg exchange interactions, and that magnon entanglement can be detected by means of quantum homodyne techniques. As an illustration of the relevance of our findings for possible entanglement experiments in the solid state, a typical antiferromagnet with the perovskite crystal structure is considered, and it is shown that long wave length magnon modes have the highest degree of entanglement.

In contrast to conventional assumptions, we show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be of non-relativistic origin, in particular in materials with a non-collinear magnetic configuration, where non-relativistic contributions can dominate over spin-orbit effects. The weak antiferromagnetic phase of Mn$_{3}$Sn is used to illustrate these findings. Using electronic structure theory as a conceptual platform, all relevant exchange interactions are derived for a general, non-collinear magnetic state. It is demonstrated that non-collinearity influences all three types of exchange interaction and that physically distinct mechanisms, which connect to electron- and spin-density and currents, may be used as a general way to analyze and understand magnetic interactions of the solid state.

We present an application of a high-throughput search of new rare-earth free permanent magnets focusing on 3d-5d transition metal compounds. The search involved a part of the ICSD database (international crystallographic structural database), together with tailored search criteria and electronic structure calculations of magnetic properties. Our results suggest that it possible to find candidates for rare-earth free permanent magnets using a data-mining/data-filtering approach. The most promising candidates identified here are Pt$_2$FeNi, Pt$_2$FeCu, and W$_2$FeB$_2$. We suggest these materials to be a good platform for further investigations in the search of novel rare-earth free permanent magnets.

Spin glasses are a highly complex magnetic state of matter, intricately linked to spin frustration and structural disorder. They exhibit no long-range order and exude aging phenomena, distinguishing them from quantum spin liquids. We report a new type of spin glass state, the spin-Q glass, observable in bulk-like crystalline metallic neodymium thick films. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy combined with ab initio calculations and atomistic spin-dynamics simulations, we visualize the variations in atomic-scale non-collinear order and its response to magnetic field and temperature. We quantify the aging phenomena relating the glassiness to crystalline symmetry and the energy landscape. This result not only resolves the long-standing debate of the magnetism of neodymium, but also suggests that glassiness may arise in other magnetic solids lacking extrinsic disorder.

We study magnon properties in terms of spin stiffness, Curie temperatures and magnon spectrum of Fe-Ni, Co-Ni and Fe-Co random alloys using a combination of electronic structure calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. Influence of the disorder are studied in detail by use of large supercells with random atomic arrangement. It is found that disorder affects the magnon spectrum in vastly different ways depending on the system. Specifically, it is more pronounced in Fe-Ni alloys compared to Fe-Co alloys. In particular, the magnon spectrum at room temperature in Permalloy (Fe$_{20}$Ni$_{80}$) is found to be rather diffuse in a large energy interval while in Fe$_{75}$Co$_{25}$ it forms sharp branches. Fe-Co alloys are very interesting from a technological point of view due to the combination of large Curie temperatures and very low calculated Gilbert damping of $\sim$0.0007 at room temperature for Co concentrations around 20--30\%.

Based on atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we report the ultrafast generation of single antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions in a confined geometry. This process is achieved through an effective magnetic field induced by the athermal inverse Faraday effect from a short laser pulse. The resulting field can nucleate an isolated skyrmion as a topologically protected metastable state in a collinear antiferromagnet with small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The radius of a single skyrmion is shown to increase by applying a uniform dc magnetic field and at increasing temperature. To investigate possible AFM spin-caloritronics phenomena, we investigate the skyrmion dynamics under an applied temperature gradient both analytically and numerically. The antiferromagnetic skyrmions move longitudinally toward the hotter region, but in contrast, small skyrmions in the very low damping regime move toward the colder side, irrespective of the staggered topological charge number, with a speed that is much faster than that of their ferromagnetic counterparts., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We present a computationally efficient general first-principles based method for spin-lattice simulations for solids. Our method is based on a combination of atomistic spin dynamics and molecular dynamics, expressed through a spin-lattice Hamiltonian where the bilinear magnetic term is expanded to second order in displacement, and all parameters are computed using density functional theory. The effect of first-order spin-lattice coupling on the magnon and phonon dispersion in bcc Fe is reported as an example, and is seen to be in good agreement with previous simulations performed with an empirical potential approach. In addition, we also illustrate the abilities of our method on a more conceptual level, by exploring dissipation-free spin and lattice motion in small magnetic clusters (a dimer, trimer and quadmer). Our method opens the door for quantitative description and understanding of the microscopic origin of many fundamental phenomena of contemporary interest, such as ultrafast demagnetization, magnetocalorics, and spincaloritronics.

We study the mutual coupling of spin fluctuations and lattice vibrations in paramagnetic CrN by combining atomistic spin dynamics and ab initio molecular dynamics. The two degrees of freedom are dynamically coupled leading to non-adiabatic effects. Those effects suppress the phonon life times at low temperature compared to an adiabatic approach. The here identified dynamic coupling provides an explanation for the experimentally observed unexpected temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of magnetic semiconductors above the magnetic ordering temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We have performed realistic atomistic simulations at finite temperatures using Monte Carlo and atomistic spin dynamics simulations incorporating quantum (Bose-Einstein) statistics. The description is much improved at low temperatures compared to classical (Boltzmann) statistics normally used in these kind of simulations, while at higher temperatures the classical statistics are recovered. This corrected low-temperature description is reflected in both magnetization and the magnetic specific heat, the latter allowing for improved modeling of the magnetic contribution to free energies. A central property in the method is the magnon density of states at finite temperatures and we have compared several different implementations for obtaining it. The method has no restrictions regarding chemical and magnetic order of the considered materials. This is demonstrated by applying the method to elemental ferromagnetic systems, including Fe and Ni, as well as Fe-Co random alloys and the ferrimagnetic system GdFe$_3$ .

Materials with strong spin-orbit interactions are presently a main target in the search for systems with novel magnetic properties. Magnetic anisotropies can be very large in such compounds, ranging from strongly frustrated Kitaev exchange in honeycomb iridates and the associated spin-liquid states to robust antisymmetric couplings in square-lattice Sr_2IrO_4 . Here we predict from ab initio quantum chemistry calculations that another highly unusual regime is realized in pyrochlore iridium oxides: the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction can vanish whilst the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii- Moriya exchange reaches values as large as 5 meV, a result which challenges common notions and existing phenomenological models of magnetic superexchange. The resulting spin excitation spectra reveal a very flat magnon dispersion in the Nd- and Tb-based pyrochlore iridates, suggesting the possibility of using these modes to store magnetic information. An extended atomistic spin model allowing for studies of the finite temperature magnetic properties of alloys is proposed. The model is obtained by extending the Heisenberg Hamiltonian via a parameterization from a first principles basis, interpolating from both the low temperature ferromagnetic and the high temperature paramagnetic reference states. This allows us to treat magnetic systems with varying degree of itinerant character within the model. Satisfactory agreement with both previous theoretical studies and experiments are obtained in terms of Curie temperatures and paramagnetic properties. The proposed model is not restricted to elements but is also applied to binary alloys, such as the technologically important material Permalloy, where significant differences in the finite magnetic properties of Fe and Ni magnetic moments are found. The proposed model strives to find the right compromise between accuracy and computational feasibility for accurate modeling, even for complex magnetic alloys and compounds.

In magnetic materials nontrivial spin textures may emerge owing to the competition among different types of magnetic interactions. Among such spin textures, chiral magnetic solitons represent topologically protected spin configurations with particle-like properties. Based on atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that these chiral magnetic solitons are ideal to use for logical operations, and we demonstrate the functionality of a three-input majority gate, in which the input states can be controlled by applying an external electromagnetic field or spin-polarized currents. One of the main advantages of the proposed device is that the input and output signals are encoded in the chirality of solitons, that may be moved, allowing to perform logical operations using only minute electric currents. As an example we illustrate how the three input majority gate can be used to perform logical relations, such as Boolean AND and OR., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Heusler alloys have been intensively studied due to the wide variety of properties that they exhibit. One of these properties is of particular interest for technological applications, i.e. the fact that some Heusler alloys are half-metallic. In the following, a systematic study of the magnetic properties of three different Heusler families $\textrm{Co}_2\textrm{Mn}\textrm{Z}$, $\text{Co}_2\text{Fe}\text{Z}$ and $\textrm{Mn}_2\textrm{V}\textrm{Z}$ with $\text{Z}=\left(\text{Al, Si, Ga, Ge}\right)$ is performed. A key aspect is the determination of the Gilbert damping from first principles calculations, with special focus on the role played by different approximations, the effect that substitutional disorder and temperature effects. Heisenberg exchange interactions and critical temperature for the alloys are also calculated as well as magnon dispersion relations for representative systems, the ferromagnetic $\textrm{Co}_2\textrm{Fe}\textrm{Si}$ and the ferrimagnetic $\textrm{Mn}_2\textrm{V}\textrm{Al}$. Correlations effects beyond standard density-functional theory are treated using both the local spin density approximation including the Hubbard $U$ and the local spin density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory approximation, which allows to determine if dynamical self-energy corrections can remedy some of the inconsistencies which were previously reported for these alloys.

Recent experimental data demonstrate emerging magnetic order in platinum atomically thin nanowires. Furthermore, an unusual form of magnetic anisotropy -- colossal magnetic anisotropy (CMA) -- was earlier predicted to exist in atomically thin platinum nanowires. Using spin dynamics simulations based on first-principles calculations, we here explore the spin dynamics of atomically thin platinum wires to reveal the spin relaxation signature of colossal magnetic anisotropy, comparing it with other types of anisotropy such as uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA). We find that the CMA alters the spin relaxation process distinctly and, most importantly, causes a large speed-up of the magnetic relaxation compared to uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic behavior of the nanowire exhibiting CMA should be possible to identify experimentally at the nanosecond time scale for temperatures below 5 K. By means of first principles calculations, we have systematically investigated how the magnetodynamic properties Gilbert damping, magnetization and exchange stiffness are affected when permalloy (Py) (Fe$_{0.19}$Ni$_{0.81}$) is doped with 4d or 5d transition metal impurities. We find that the trends in the Gilbert damping can be understood from relatively few basic parameters such as the density of states at the Fermi level, the spin-orbit coupling and the impurity concentration. % The temperature dependence of the Gilbert damping is found to be very weak which we relate to the lack of intraband transitions in alloys. % Doping with $4d$ elements has no major impact on the studied Gilbert damping, apart from diluting the host. However, the $5d$ elements have a profound effect on the damping and allows it to be tuned over a large interval while maintaining the magnetization and exchange stiffness. % As regards spin stiffness, doping with early transition metals results in considerable softening, whereas late transition metals have a minor impact. % Our result agree well with earlier calculations where available. In comparison to experiments, the computed Gilbert damping appears slightly underestimated while the spin stiffness show good general agreement., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The half-metallic half-Heusler alloy NiMnSb is a promising candidate for applications in spintronic devices due to its low magnetic damping and its rich anisotropies. Here we use ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements and calculations from first principles to investigate how the composition of the epitaxially grown NiMnSb influences the magnetodynamic properties of saturation magnetization $M_S$, Gilbert damping $\alpha$, and exchange stiffness $A$. $M_S$ and $A$ are shown to have a maximum for stoichiometric composition, while the Gilbert damping is minimum. We find excellent quantitative agreement between theory and experiment for $M_S$ and $\alpha$. The calculated $A$ shows the same trend as the experimental data, but has a larger magnitude. Additionally to the unique in-plane anisotropy of the material, these tunabilities of the magnetodynamic properties can be taken advantage of when employing NiMnSb films in magnonic devices., Comment: 3 figures
