Abstract

In this paper, a methodical approach to evaluate the potential of quantum computing for manufacturing simulation, using the example of multi-axis milling of thin-walled aerospace components, is discussed. A developed approach for identifying bottlenecks in manufacturing simulations, for which the application of quantum computing potentially provides a speed-up or increase in accuracy, is presented. Moreover, indicators of quantum computing suitability and feasibility are defined with the main objective of identifying whether a manufacturing simulation bottleneck is suitable for quantum computing applications. Abstract

Tool wear conditions impact the surface quality of the workpiece and its final geometric precision. In this research, we propose an efficient tool wear segmentation approach based on Segment Anything Model, which integrates U-Net as an automated prompt generator to streamline the processes of tool wear detection. Our evaluation covered three Point-of-Interest generation methods and further investigated the effects of variations in training dataset sizes and U-Net training intensities on resultant wear segmentation outcomes. The results consistently highlight our approach's advantage over U-Net, emphasizing its ability to achieve accurate wear segmentation even with limited training datasets. This feature underscores its potential applicability in industrial scenarios where datasets may be limited.

Abstract

As an integral part of contemporary manufacturing, monitoring systems obtain valuable information during machining to oversee the condition of both the process and the machine. Recently, diverse algorithms have been employed to detect tool wear using single or multiple sources of measurements. In this study, a deep learning approach is proposed for estimating tool wear, considering cutting parameters. The model's accuracy and transferability in tool wear estimation were assessed with milling experiments conducted under varying cutting parameters. The results indicate that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods in terms of both transferability and rapid learning capabilities.

Abstract

Tool wear conditions impact the final quality of the workpiece. In this study, we propose a deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network that incorporates cutting conditions as extra model inputs, aiming to improve tool wear estimation accuracy and fulfill industrial demands for zero-shot transferability. Through a series of milling experiments under various cutting parameters, we evaluate the model's performance in terms of tool wear estimation accuracy and its transferability to new fixed or variable cutting parameters. The results consistently highlight our approach's advantage over conventional models that omit cutting conditions, maintaining superior performance irrespective of the stability of the wear development or the limitation of the training dataset. This finding underscores its potential applicability in industrial scenarios.

5. Mass Loss and Displacement Modeling for Multi-Axis Milling

Abstract

During the cutting process, material of the workpiece is continuously being removed by the cutting tool, which results in a reduction of mass as well as a displacement in the center of the workpiece mass. When using workpiece sided force sensors, such as table dynamometers, the total mass and the displacement of the center of mass affects the force measurement due to gravitational and inertial effects. The high flexibility of the milling process leads to a complex change of volume and mass and necessitates the consideration of the engagement conditions between tool and workpiece along the tool path in order to estimate changes in mass and center of mass. This paper proposes a method for estimating the mass loss and the displacement of the center of mass during multi-axis milling processes. In this method the tool gets numerically sliced along the tool axis and the workpiece removal for each slice along an arbitrary tool path gets calculated. To validate the mass loss model, experiments in both three-axis milling as well as multi-axis milling processes have been conducted. Since it is difficult to measure the center of mass, validation for the displacement of the center of mass was done by comparison with data extracted from CAD. The results show good agreement between the simulated and measured mass loss using the proposed approach.

Abstract

The Internet of Production (IoP) leverages concepts such as digital shadows, data lakes, and a World Wide Lab (WWL) to advance today's production. Consequently, it requires a technical infrastructure that can support the agile deployment of these concepts and corresponding high-level applications, which, e.g., demand the processing of massive data in motion and at rest. As such, key research aspects are the support for low-latency control loops, concepts on scalable data stream processing, deployable information security, and semantically rich and efficient long-term storage. In particular, such an infrastructure cannot continue to be limited to machines and sensors, but additionally needs to encompass networked environments: production cells, edge computing, and location-independent cloud infrastructures. Finally, in light of the envisioned WWL, i.e., the interconnection of production sites, the technical infrastructure must be advanced to support secure and privacy-preserving industrial collaboration. To evolve today's production sites and lay the infrastructural foundation for the IoP, we identify five broad streams of research: (1) adapting data and stream processing to heterogeneous data from distributed sources, (2) ensuring data interoperability between systems and production sites, (3) exchanging and sharing data with different stakeholders, (4) network security approaches addressing the risks of increasing interconnectivity, and (5) security architectures to enable secure and privacy-preserving industrial collaboration.
