The present study provides the first ultrastructural data on the digenean Gonocerca phycidis belonging to the family Gonocercidae. Live adults digenean were collected from the stomach of the marine fish Gephyroberyx darwinii (Teleostei: Trachichthyidae) caught in the Atlantic Ocean, off Dakar (Senegal). This is also the first report of G. phycidis from Senegal and this host species. The mature spermatozoon exhibits (i) two axonemes with the 9 + ‘‘1’’ pattern of the Trepaxonemata, (ii) a lateral expansion associated with external ornamentations and without cortical microtubules, (iii) two types of external ornamentation of the plasma membrane located in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon, (iv) two bundles of cortical microtubules in the mitochondrial and nuclear areas of the spermatozoon, (v) one mitochondrion and (vi) a nucleus. The maximum number of cortical microtubules is located in the median part of the spermatozoon. Moreover, the mature spermatozoon of G. phycidis presents some peculiarities. The presence of a lateral expansion without cortical microtubules associated with external ornamentations is described here, for the first time, in digenean spermatozoa. The presence of two elongated bundles of cortical microtubules is also reported for the first time in the superfamily of Hemiuroidea. However, the ultrastructure of the posterior spermatozoon extremity confirms that already described in other hemiuroidean species.

This work is the first ultrastructural study of spermatozoa in a species of Digenea belonging to the genus Labracetabulum. Labracetabulum gephyroberici parasitizes the digestive tract of the teleost fish Gephyroberyx darwinii (Trachichtyidae) captured in the Atlantic Ocean near Dakar (Senegal). This is also the first report of L. gephyroberici from Senegal. The mature spermatozoon is filiform tapered at both ends and exhibits the general organization described in most Opecoelideans, namely two axonemes of the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, an anterior electron-dense material, an external ornamentation associated with a row of cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies, two mitochondria and two bundles of cortical microtubules. However, the mature spermatozoon of L. gephyroberici exhibits some particularities: a short first axoneme which does not reach the nuclear region and the position of the second mitochondrion which reaches almost the posterior part of the mature spermatozoon. The second mitochondrion is still present after the disappearance of the second axoneme. The morphology of the posterior extremity corresponds to the Opecoelidean type described by Quilichini et al. (2010).

A new microsporidian Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite of Bacciger israelensis (Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite of Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) is described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the SSU rDNA gene, places the new species in the clade containing mainly crustacean-infecting microsporidia of the genus Cucumispora, within superclade V (Marinosporidia) sensu Vossbrinck et al., 2014. Mature spores of T. baccigeri are ovoid, uninucleated and measure 2.5 × 1.4 μm. The number of coils of the polar tube is 8-10. The polaroplast is composed of an external lamellar part and an internal vesicular or granular part. The main differences that distinguish the new genus and new species from the closely related microsporidia include hyperparasitism in a digenean host infecting a marine fish, the geographic distribution (coast of Tunisia), presence of one nucleus at all developmental stages, disporoblastic sporogony, and the absence of sporophorous vacuoles.Étude ultrastructurale et moléculaire de la microsporidie Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite du trématode digène Bacciger israelensis (Faustulidae), parasite de Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae).Une nouvelle microsporidie Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite de Bacciger israelensis (Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite de Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) est décrite en microscopie électronique à transmission. L’analyse phylogénétique, basée sur l’étude du gène SSU rDNA, place la nouvelle espèce dans le clade qui contient notamment les microsporidies parasites de crustacés du genre Cucumispora, dans le superclade V (Marinosporidia) sensu Vossbrinck et al, 2014. Les spores mûres de T. baccigeri sont ovoïdes, uninucléées et mesurent 2,5 × 1,4 μm. Le nombre de tours de spire décrits par le tube polaire est de 8 à 10. Le polaroplaste est composé d’une partie externe lamellaire et d’une partie interne vésiculeuse ou granuleuse. Les principales différences entre le nouveau genre et la nouvelle espèce et les microsporidies les plus proches sont : l’hyperparasitisme d’un digène parasite d’un poisson marin, la localisation géographique (côtes de la Tunisie), et certains aspects du développement, notamment la présence d’un seul noyau à tous les stades de développement, la sporogonie disporoblastique et l’absence de vacuoles sporophores.

Coxiella burnetii and Toxoplasma gondii are intracellular pathogens that cause important reproductive disorders in humans and animals worldwide, which translates into high economic losses. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible role of peridomestic small mammals in the maintenance and transmission of C. burnetii and T. gondii in the Mediterranean island of Corsica, by the analysis of the seroprevalence in rodents. Our results showed a wide distribution of C. burnetii and T. gondii in Corsica in Rattus rattus and Mus musculus domesticus. The overall seroprevalence of anti-C. burnetii was 9.32%, being 8.73% from R. rattus and 13.33% from M. m. domesticus. With respect to T. gondii, seropositive rodents were observed in 12.96% of total animals, being 12.76% from rats and 14.29% from mice. Taking into consideration the large range of host these pathogens can infect, including humans and livestock, and their pathologies, the results provided by this study are relevant for public health and veterinary, and could help the governmental entities to prevent possible infectious focuses of Q fever and toxoplasmosis.

The ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoa of Tergestia clonacantha and T. laticollis collected from the digestive tracts of fishes from New Caledonia is described using transmission electron microscopy and compared to that of related species. The spermatozoa of the two species exhibit the general pattern described in most digeneans, namely two axonemes with the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, nucleus, mitochondrion, cortical microtubules, an external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies and granules of glycogen. The spermatozoa of T. clonacantha and T. laticollis show the same ultrastructural model with some specificities in each case, particularly in the disposition of the structures in the posterior extremities of the spermatozoon. This study confirms that ultrastructural characters of the mature spermatozoon are useful tools for the phylogenetic analysis of the Digenea.Étude comparative des caractéristiques ultrastructurales des spermatozoïdes mûrs de deux Fellodistomidae, Tergestia clonacantha et T. laticollis, et contribution à la connaissance phylogénétique des Gymnophalloidea.L’ultrastructure des spermatozoïdes mûrs de Tergestia clonacantha et T. laticollis, prélevés dans le tube digestif de poissons de Nouvelle-Calédonie, est décrite par microscopie électronique à transmission et comparée à celle d’espèces apparentées. Les spermatozoïdes des deux espèces présentent la structure générale décrite chez la plupart des digènes, à savoir deux axonèmes du type 9 + « 1 » des Trepaxonemata, un noyau, une mitochondrie, des microtubules corticaux, des ornementations externes de la membrane plasmique, des corps épineux et des granules de glycogène. Les spermatozoïdes de T. clonacantha et T. laticollis présentent le même modèle ultrastructural avec quelques spécificités dans chaque cas, notamment dans la disposition des structures aux extrémités postérieures du spermatozoïde. Cette étude confirme que les caractères ultrastructuraux du spermatozoïde mûrs sont des outils utiles pour l’analyse phylogénétique des Digenea.

In this transmission electron microscopy study, we describe the ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Heterotis niloticus (Osteoglossiformes), which is distinguished by having two flagella. Our investigation also highlights the great diversity of sperm cell structures observed across osteoglossiform families, such as aflagellate (Gymnarchidae, Mormyridae), monoflagellate (Notopteridae, Pantodontidae) and biflagellate spermatozoa. As biflagellate spermatozoa are rare in vertebrates, we also summarize the orders and families known to possess this ultrastructural character, most of which are fishes.

Since the construction of the Diama Dam (1985), the epidemiology of schistosomiasis along the Senegal River Basin (SRB) has been extremely dynamic with outbreaks of both intestinal and urogenital schistosomiasis. In the early 2000s, technicians reported cases of suspected urogenital schistosomiasis in adults from the local hospital in Richard-Toll, Lower SRB. The genetic analysis of schistosome miracidia isolated from 11 patients in 2012 from two neighbourhoods (Campement and Gaya) of Richard-Toll confirmed infection with Schistosoma haematobium but also S. haematobium/S. bovis hybrids. Thirty-seven per cent of the miracidia were S. bovis/S. haematobium hybrids and 63% were pure S. haematobium. The data are discussed in relation to the ongoing dynamic epidemiology of the schistosomes in Senegal and the need to treat non-target individuals.

This study provides the first ultrastructural data on the mature spermatozoon of Aephnidiogenes senegalensis (Digenea, Lepocreadioidea, Aephnidiogenidae) parasite of the teleost fish Pomadasys jubelini (Haemulidae) captured near the coast of Dakar (Senegal). This is also the first ultrastructural data on the spermatozoon in the genus Aephnidiogenes. The mature spermatozoon of A. senegalensis is filiform, tapered at both ends and exhibits the general pattern described in the Lepocreadioidea, namely two axonemes of the 9 + ‘1’ pattern, an antero-lateral electron dense material, a nucleus, two mitochondria, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane in the anterior region of the spermatozoon, granules of glycogen and two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules. A peculiarity of the spermatozoon of A. senegalensis is the structure of the apical electron-dense material.

Genetic and morphological diversity of Thysaniezia tapeworms from cattle and sheep in Senegal was investigated using light and scanning microscopic observations and molecular analysis based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA). A total of 52 adult tapeworms were collected from sheep and cattle. Although the tapeworms of the two hosts were morphologically very close, phylogenetic analysis based on cox1 and SSU rDNA gene sequences showed that they were divided into two clades corresponding each to a host. The maximum pairwise divergence between the clades were 12.1% in cox1 and 2.9% in SSU rDNA, indicating they are distinct species. The tapeworms collected from sheep were morphologically identified as Thysaniezia ovilla, a cosmopolitan species in domestic ruminants. Detailed morphological observations revealed a consistent difference between the tapeworms obtained from sheep and those from cattle. The latter were identified as Thysaniezia connochaeti. The present study highlights presence of two species of Thysaniezia among domestic ruminants in Senegal: T. ovilla specific to sheep and T. connochaeti specific to cattle. Our work is the first report of T. connochaeti from domestic animals.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide emerging zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira species, that in some patients develop severe forms with high mortality. In France, Corsica is the area where the highest incidences have been reported. The present study was focused on the analysis of pathogenic Leptospira species in rodents of Corsica, as these micromammals are the main natural reservoirs of the bacteria, in order to identify the circulating species and to locate possible risk focuses of transmission, as no previous study on the presence of Leptospira species has been carried out in the island. Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus, Apodemus sylvaticus and Mus musculus domesticus were captured in the proximity of water sources along Corsica, the detection of pathogenic Leptospira species was carried out by amplification of the LipL32 gene. The bacteria were found in all the rodent species analyzed and widely. The general prevalence was 10.4%, reaching the maximum value in Bastia (45%). Leptospira interrogans and Leptospira borgpetersenii were identified by phylogenetic analysis, but also two sequences which corresponded to an unnamed Leptospira species, only previously found in rodents of New Caledonia. The high incidence of human leptospirosis in Corsica could be partially explained by the wide distribution of pathogenic Leptospira species identified in this study. Also, the presence of an unknown pathogenic species of Leptospira in an area with high prevalence, may be involved in the higher incidence of Leptospirosis in this island, however, the zoonotic capacity of this species remains unknown. The results obtained are interesting for public health since all positive samples were found near water sources and one of the routes of transmission of leptospirosis is contact with contaminated water. This information could help the competent entities to take preventive measures, reducing the incidence of human leptospirosis in Corsica.

Sclerodistomoides pacificus is the only species described now in Sclerodistomoididae. We present in this paper the first ultrastructural data of the mature spermatozoon of a species from the genus Sclerodistomoides. Adult specimens of S. pacificus (Digenea: Hemiuroidea: Sclerodistomoididae), were parasites of the gall-bladder of the teleost fish Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus captured in the Atlantic Ocean, near Dakar (Senegal). The male gamete is a filiform cell which exhibits a similar ultrastructural organization to that reported in most species belonging to the Hemiuroidea with two axonemes of the 9 + ‘1′ pattern of trepaxonematans, a nucleus, a mitochondrion, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane not associated with cortical microtubules and located in the anterior region of the spermatozoon, and parallel cortical microtubules disposed in one side of the spermatozoon. However, the present study allowed describing for the first time a moniliform mitochondrion in the Hemiuroidea. The presence of a moniliform mitochondrion and the absence of filamentous external ornamentation described in other Hemiuridae: Lecithochirium microstomum, L. musculus and Hemiurus appendiculatus are a good tool for phylogenetic purposes in the Hemiuroidea. Moreover, spermatological organisation and model are discussed in context with those of previous studies in the Hemiuroidea.

Avitellina tapeworms are common intestinal parasites of ruminants with a worldwide distribution. In Senegal, only Avitellina centripunctata tapeworm has been reported to date, and genetic diversity was previously confirmed by enzymatic analysis. This study aims to clarify the diversity of Avitellina tapeworms isolated from sheep and cattle in Senegal. In total, 613 adult Avitellina tapeworms were collected from sheep and cattle. Morphological analysis by the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy identified three Avitellina "morphospecies": A. centripunctata and Avitellina sp.2 were detected in sheep while Avitellina sp.3 was identified in cattle. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the complete mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) sequences revealed that 101 Avitellina tapeworms were divided into 54 haplotypes grouped into three clades, of which two were specific to sheep and one specific to cattle. Three morphospecies corresponded to each of three clades and the maximum pairwise divergence among the clades ranged from 9.7 to 18.5% in cox1. The present study demonstrates the unexpected diversity of Avitellina tapeworms in domestic ruminants, and emphasize the necessity of re-evaluation of the taxonomy of the genus.

The mature spermatozoon of Sclerodistomum italicum is filiform, tapered at both ends and shows the following features: 2 axonemes of the 9+"1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, mitochondrion, nucleus and parallel cortical microtubules. The specific features of the spermatozoon of S. italicum include the simultaneous presence of two types of extramembranous ornamentations, the presence of short cortical microtubules in the anterior part of the spermatozoon and the presence of only one bundle of cortical microtubules in the median part of the spermatozoon. Thus far these structures are known only in the Hemiuroidea. The presence of filamentous ornamentation in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon has not previously been described in the Sclerodistomidae. Similar to spermatozoa of other hemiuroideans, S. italicum lack spine-like bodies described in spermatozoa of many digenean taxa. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon exhibits the same ultrastructural characteristics typical of the Hemiuroidea.

The mature Podocotyloides magnatestis spermatozoon exhibits two axonemes of the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, two mitochondria, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies, an external ornamentation of plasma membrane, glycogen granules and an antero-lateral electron-dense material. These ultrastructural characteristics have already been described in the Opecoeloidea species studied so far. However, P. magnatestis spermatozoon is distinguished by the fact that its electron-dense material is laterally located on the side of the second axoneme. Moreover, the posterior spermatozoon extremity, characterized by the presence of the nucleus, is observed for the first time in the Opecoelidae.

International audience; The mature spermatozoon of Hemiurus appendiculatus exhibits the general pattern described in most of the digenean namely, two axonemes of the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, a filiform mitochondrion, external ornamentations of the plasma membrane and parallel cortical microtubules located on one side of the spermatozoon. In this study, we show for the second time in a digenean spermatozoon the presence of microtubules of the second axoneme associated each in a short length with an external ornamentation, seven cortical microtubules, a terminal bulge in the anterior spermatozoon extremity separate from the remainder of the spermatozoon by a transverse constriction and the simultaneous presence of the external ornamentation of the plasma membrane with a filamentous ornamentation. The external ornamentations have a differentiated distribution, cover almost the anterior region of the spermatozoon, are more abundant around the first axoneme and extend backwards over a short distance around the second axoneme. This study also allowed us to reveal for the first time the existence in the Hemiuroidea of an axoneme that begins to disrupt before reaching the front end of the mitochondrion.

International audience; We describe here the mature spermatozoa of three species of bucephalids, namely Bucephalus margar-itae, Rhipidocotyle khalili and Prosorhynchus longisaccatus. This study provides the first ultrastructural data on the genera Bucephalus and Rhipidocotyle and enabled us to confirm the model of the mature spermatozoon in the Bucephalinae. The spermatozoon exhibits two axonemes with the 9 + ''1'' pattern of the Trepaxonemata, one of which is very short, lateral expansion, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane located in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon and associated with cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies, a mitochondrion, and a nucleus. The maximum number of cortical microtubules is located in the anterior part of the spermatozoon. However, more studies are needed to elucidate if spine-like bodies are present in all the Bucephalinae or not. In the Prosorhynchinae, the mature spermatozoon exhibits a similar ultrastructural pattern. Some differences are observed, particularly the ax-oneme lengths and the arrangement of the spine-like bodies. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon in the Bucephalinae exhibits only the nucleus, but prosorhynchines have microtubules.; Dans cette étude, nous décrivons les spermatozoïdes mûrs de trois espèces de bucephalidés, à savoir Bucephalus margaritae, Rhipidocotyle khalili et Prosorhynchus longisaccatus. Ces premières données ultrastructurales pour les genres Bucephalus et Rhipidocotyle nous ont permis de confirmer le modèle du spermatozoïde chez les Bucephalinae. Le spermatozoïde comprend deux axonèmes de type 9 + ‘‘1’’ des Trepaxonemata, l’un d’entre eux étant très court, une expansion latérale, une ornementation externe de la membrane plasmique située au niveau de l’extrémité antérieure du spermatozoïde et associée avec des microtubules corticaux, des corps en forme d’épines, une mitochondrie et un noyau. Le nombremaximum de microtubules corticaux est situé dans la partie antérieure du spermatozoïde. Toutefois, des études supplémentaires seraient nécessaires pour vérifier si les corps en forme d’épines sont présents chez tous les Bucephalinae. Chez les Prosorhynchinae, le spermatozoïde mûr présente une structure similaire. Quelques différences sont toutefois observées, notamment au niveau de la longueur des axonèmes et de la disposition des corps en forme d’épines. L’extrémité postérieure du spermatozoïde chez les Bucephalidae est caractérisée par la présence du noyau seul, alors que les Prosorhynchinae ont des microtubules.

The common dentex, Dentex dentex (L.), is an iconic marine coastal fish in the Mediterranean Sea. This study was performed in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (BSNR), (NW Mediterranean Sea). The aims were to: (1) evaluate temporal variation of the artisanal fishing of common dentex (2000–2012); (2) compare and quantify catch rates, fishing techniques and catch composition for artisanal and recreational fisheries, and determine the influence of management measures by both activities; and (3) estimate the production of both artisanal and recreational fisheries. Fishery data were collected from different artisanal fishing surveys (onboard fishing vessels and landings) and recreational fishing surveys (roving). The gears with the highest rates of exploitation were longline (3554 g per 100 hooks) and Trolling (351 g boat−1 h−1 ±SE), respectively, for artisanal and recreational fishing. This study showed that catches by both activities were quantitatively higher in partially protected areas than outside them. Production estimations suggest that the recreational fishery contributes significantly to fishing mortality and that it can magnify the negative effects of artisanal fisheries. Specific measures are needed for the sustainable fishery management of common dentex.

Spermatological characteristics are described for the first time in the genus Neomultitestis Machida, 1982, belonging to the family Lepocreadiidae Odhner, 1905. Adult Neomultitestis aspidogastriformis were collected from the digestive tract of Platax teira, caught off New Caledonia. The mature spermatozoon of N. aspidogastriformis is described by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It includes two axonemes with 9 + “1” pattern of Trepaxonemata, an antero-lateral electron-dense material, attachment zones, two mitochondria, a nucleus, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, and granules of glycogen. Certain ultrastructural characteristics of the spermatozoon, especially the antero-lateral electron-dense material, are shared by N. aspidogastriformis and all species of the superfamily Lepocreadioidea studied so far. The antero-lateral electron-dense material, present in different families of lepocreadioids, supports the monophyletic status of the superfamily. We also list several ultrastructural characteristics which characterize the mature spermatozoon of the Lepocreadioidea.

The wide biodiversity and economic importance of digeneans have motivated a great deal of research in the last decade, focussing on their phylogenetic positions. Molecular research was instrumental for our understanding of phylogeny in the Digenea, but spermatological studies have also provided many results, which are potentially useful for phylogeny; however, the complete spermatological data set has never been reviewed in a whole phylogenetic perspective. Spermatological data are now available for more than 100 species, belonging to 15 superfamilies and 46 families. In this paper, we try to summarize the current knowledge about sperm structure in the digeneans and propose a classification of digenean spermatozoa into five basic models. The main ultrastructural characters used are (1) the type of axoneme, (2) the lateral expansion, (3) the association 'external ornamentation of the plasma membrane + cortical microtubules', (4) the field of cortical microtubules and its number, (5) the location of the external ornamentation, (6) the location of the maximum number of cortical microtubules and (7) the number of mitochondria. We also outline the most interesting features for phylogenetic inference and their possible value in the context of digenean systematics, phylogeny and evolution. Associations between sperm models and superfamilies were found as follows: Type 1 in the Schistosomatoidea; Type 2 in the Hemiuroidea; Type 3 in the Opecoeloidea, Lepocreadioidea, Haploporoidea and Opisthorchioidea; Type 4 in the Gorgoderoidea, Microphalloidea, Plagiorchioidea and Gymnophalloidea; Type 5 in the Echinostomatoidea, Microscaphidioidea, Paramphistomoidea, Pronocephaloidea and Brachylaimoidea.

International audience; The present study evaluates the relation between chronic arsenic (As) exposure in the natural distribution area of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta), oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymatic defenses. Two rivers of the same watershed were evaluated to highlight the correlation between As accumulation and the resulting stress: (i) the Presa River, which has high chronic As levels (2281.66 µg/L) due to past mining activity, and (ii) the Bravona River (control river). This metalloid was measured in main fish tissues (gills, kidney, liver, muscle, gonads and fins) and water. As organotropism in S. trutta was kidney > liver > gill > fin > gonad > muscle. The HepatoSomatic Index (HSI) and somatic condition (CF) were used to compare fish population conditions from both sites. Arsenic can be absorbed by the gills and can induce oxidative stress and disturb antioxidant defenses. The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress response by measuring mal-ondialdehyde (MDA) content, as a marker of lipid perox-idation, and antioxidant enzymatic defenses (Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase CAT, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)), in the main tissues of control and exposed trout. The highest MDA content was found in the kidney and liver of exposed trout. SOD and CAT activities in exposed livers and kidneys were considerably increased while a significant rise of GPx activity was observed only in the liver. GST activity was found to be significantly induced in the liver of exposed trout. The results demonstrate that arsenic bioaccumulation can induce lipid peroxidation and substantial modifications in antioxidant enzymatic defenses in main wild trout tissues.

International audience; The common dentex Dentex dentex (Linnaeus, 1758) is an iconic marine coastal fish in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a demersal sparid fish (0–200 m), that grows to a maximum length of 100 cm and a weight of 13 kg, with a relatively long life span (more than 20 years). As a high trophic level predator, it holds a key position in coastal marine food webs. The common dentex is of great economic importance for both artisanal (small-scale coastal fisheries) and recreational fishing. Despite its economic and ecological importance, scientific data on this species in its natural environment are still very scant. The global commercial catch of common dentex has fluctuated over the last 60 years on an interannual time scale, and has declined significantly since the 1990s. There are few data regarding fishing effort and total catch from recreational fishing for common dentex, but it appears that this species is particularly targeted by this activity. The common dentex is now classified as ‘‘vulnerable’’ in the Red List of Threatened Species in the Mediterranean Sea. This review summarizes the current literature on D. dentex in regard to biology, ecology, parasitology, population structure, commercial and recreational fishing, and management regulations. Future research directions to fill gaps in current knowledge are suggested.

International audience; The parasites of 425 European eels, Anguilla anguilla, were studied between 2009 and 2012 in two Mediterranean coastal lagoons of the island of Corsica, France. An indicator value (IndVal) method was used for analysis, which combines measures of fidelity and specificity. Because of its resilience to detect changes in abundance, IndVal is an effective ecological bioindicator. The IndVal method demonstrated that site, season, silvering stage, and length could influence the occurrence of parasite species in European eel. A randomization test identified ten parasite species as having a significant indicator value for site (lagoons differed principally in salinity: oligohaline to polyhaline for the Biguglia lagoon and polyhaline to euhaline for the Urbino lagoon; the digeneans Bucephalus anguillae and Lecithochirium musculus, the cestodes Bothriocephalus claviceps, Proteocephalus macrocephalus, and larvae of Myzophyllobothrium sp., the nematodes Anguillicoloides crassus, and encysted larvae of Contracaecum sp., the acanthocephalan Acanthocephaloides incrassatus, the monogenean Pseudodactyogyrus anguillae, and the copepod Ergasilus gibbus); one parasite species for the spring season (the acanthocephalan A. incrassatus); six parasite species for silvering stage (yellow, pre-silver, silver; the trematodes B. anguillae and Deropristis inflata, encysted larvae of the nematode Contracaecum sp., the acanthocephalan A. incrassatus, the monogenean P. anguillae, and the copepod E. gibbus); and three parasite species for some of the five length classes (the cestode P. macrocephalus, encysted larvae of the nematode Contracaecum sp., and the monogenean P. anguillae). Data for species composition and infection levels should help to improve the management of parasitism in the populations of European eels.

This study presents the ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon of Prosorchis palinurichthi (Digenea: Hemiuroidea: Sclerodistomidae), parasite of the digestive tract of the teleost fish Schedophilus velaini ( Sauvage, 1879 ) (Centrolophidae) captured in the Atlantic Ocean, near Dakar (Senegal). This is a first report of P. palinurichthi from Senegal and from this host species. The mature spermatozoon of P. palinurichthi is filiform, tapered at both ends and exhibits the general pattern described in the hemiuroids: two axonemes of the 9 + ‘1’ pattern of trepaxonematans, a nucleus, a mitochondrion, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane in the anterior region of the spermatozoon and parallel cortical microtubules disposed in one side of the spermatozoon except in the anterior spermatozoon extremity and in the mitochondrial region. However, the particularities of the spermatozoon of P. palinurichthi are the presence of cortical microtubules at the anterior extremity, a great number of cortical microtubules (up to 25) in the region II of the spermatozoon, an elongate nucleus longer than the mitochondrion and the absence of spinelike bodies. Our results are discussed in context with those of previous studies in the Digenea in general and particularly in the Hemiuroidea.

The ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon of the type genus of the Plagiorchiidae Plagiorchis elegans (Rudolphi, 1802), a parasite of the Golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus is described. This study is the first ultrastructural study of the spermatozoon of a Plagiorchis, the second of a plagiorchiid species and only the third in the Plagiorchioidea. Previously data on spermatozoon ultrastructure existed only for the plagiorchiid Enodiotrema reductum and the omphalometrid Rubenstrema exasperatum. The mature spermatozoon of P. elegans exhibited the general pattern described in most digenean species, namely two axonemes of the 9 + "1" Trepaxonemata pattern, nucleus, mitochondria, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, and glycogen granules. However, the rather typical expansion of the plasma membrane is not found in P. elegans. Another peculiarity of the spermatozoon of P. elegans is the presence of a structure called thin cytoplasm termination. Spermatozoon ultrastructure of P. elegans is compared with that of E. reductum and R. exasperatum. Spermatozoon of P. elegans conforms to the general pattern described in E. reductum. Thus, this study further expands our knowledge on the spermatozoon ultrastructure among the members of the Plagiorchioidea, one of the most phylogenetically derived groups of the digenea.

The wide biodiversity and economic importance of digeneans have motivated a great deal of research in the last decade, focussing on their phylogenetic positions. Molecular research was instrumental for our understanding of phylogeny in the Digenea, but spermatological studies have also provided many results, which are potentially useful for phylogeny; however, the complete spermatological data set has never been reviewed in a whole phylogenetic perspective. Spermatological data are now available for more than 100 species, belonging to 15 superfamilies and 46 families. In this paper, we try to summarize the current knowledge about sperm structure in the digeneans and propose a classification of digenean spermatozoa into five basic models. The main ultrastructural characters used are (1) the type of axoneme, (2) the lateral expansion, (3) the association ‘external ornamentation of the plasma membrane + cortical microtubules’, (4) the field of cortical microtubules and its number, (5) the location of the external ornamentation, (6) the location of the maximum number of cortical microtubules and (7) the number of mitochondria. We also outline the most interesting features for phylogenetic inference and their possible value in the context of digenean systematics, phylogeny and evolution. Associations between sperm models and superfamilies were found as follows: Type 1 in the Schistosomatoidea; Type 2 in the Hemiuroidea; Type 3 in the Opecoeloidea, Lepocreadioidea, Haploporoidea and Opisthorchioidea; Type 4 in the Gorgoderoidea, Microphalloidea, Plagiorchioidea and Gymnophalloidea; Type 5 in the Echinostomatoidea, Microscaphidioidea, Paramphistomoidea, Pronocephaloidea and Brachylaimoidea.

International audience; The common dentex, Dentex dentex, is an iconic marine coastal fish of the Mediterranean Sea. Despite its economic and ecological importance, data on the population structure of this species are still very limited. The aim of this study was to identify the stock structure of the common dentex at relatively fine spatial scale around Corsica Island, using a combination of markers that have different spatial and temporal scales of integration: microsatellite DNA markers, otolith shape analysis and parasites communities. Microsatellite analysis indicated that there was no significant genetic differentiation in D. dentex between the four sampling sites around Corsica. Otolith shape analysis suggests one potential distinct population unit of D. dentex centered in one site (Cap Corse) varying in their degree of differentiation from those in the other zones. Multivariate analysis on parasite abundance data highlights to a lower extent two sites (Bonifacio and Galeria) with some connectivity between adjacent zones. The combination of these three markers together highlights the resulting three sites while giving complementary insights and an opportunity to compare their utility and potential to understand population interactions. A complex population structure around Corsican coasts is then proposed, providing a new perspective on common dentex fishery stock conservation and management strategies.

Spermatological characteristics of species from two monorchiid genera,OpisthomonorchisandParamonorcheides, have been investigated, for the first time, by means of transmission electron microscopy. The ultrastructural study reveals that the mature spermatozoon ofOpisthomonorchis dinemaandParamonorcheides selarisshare several characters such as the presence of two axonemes of different lengths showing the 9+“1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, two mitochondria, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, granules of glycogen and similar morphologies of the anterior and posterior extremities. The slight differences between the male gamete ofO. dinemaandP. selarisare the length of the first axoneme and the position of the second mitochondrion. This study also elucidates the general morphology of the spermatozoon in all monorchiid species described so far, which corresponds to a unique spermatozoon type. Other interesting finds concern the spermatological similarities between monorchiid spermatozoa and the mature spermatozoon reported in the apocreadiidNeoapocreadium chabaudi. These similarities allow us to suggest a close phylogenetical relationship between the Monorchiidae and the Apocreadiidae, although more studies are needed, especially in the unexplored taxa.

Ultrastructural description of Ceratomyxa aegyptiaca Yemmen, Marton, Eszterbauer and Bahri, 2012 infecting the gallbladder of Solea aegyptiaca Chabanaud, 1927 from a tunisian north-east costal lagoon, was presented in this study. The primary cell was attached to the gallbladder epithelium and presented at one side cytoplasmic projections corresponding to pinocytotic invaginations. Netherless, early sporogonic stages development was carried with contact to the epithelial cells of gallbladder. Immature spores were identified in early sporoblasts by their valvogenic, capsulogenic and binucleated sporoplasmic cells. Capsulogenesis was asynchronous. Each capsulogenic cell presented a large condensed nucleus and a capsular primordium that extended into an external tube. The eversion and coiling of the external tube gave rise to the polar filament, which displayed six turns and an apical plug.

International audience; The mature spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. is filiform and tapered at both extremities. It possesses 2 axonemes of unequal length, showing the 9 + "1" pattern of Trepaxonemata. The anterior extremity exhibits a crest-like body. Thereafter, the crest-like body disappears, and the first axoneme is surrounded by a ring of cortical microtubules (about 27 units) that persist until the appearance of the second axoneme. This ring of cortical microtubules is characteristic only for species of Bothriocephalidea and represents a very useful phylogenetic character. The spermatozoon cytoplasm is slightly electron-dense and contains numerous electron-dense granules of glycogen in several regions. The anterior and posterior extremities of the spermatozoon lack cortical microtubules. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon of Bothriocotyle sp. possesses a nucleus and a disorganized axoneme, which also characterizes spermatozoa of the Echinophallidae studied to date.

International audience; This study deals with first ultrastructure features of Acanthocephaloides incrassatus (Paleacanthocephala, Arhythmacanthidae), a parasite of the fish Anguilla anguilla, reported for the first time in a Mediterranean pond. The spermiogenesis of A. incrassatus shows original specificities which have never been pointed out to this day in ultrastructural studies on spermiogenesis: the centriolar derivative is divided into two parts of different densities: an electron-dense, and the other, electron-lucent; a ring form has been observed on each side of the axoneme; a centriole with one central element. After the elaboration of a flagellum of 9 + 2 pattern, the centriole migrates in a nuclear groove. Rapidly, the centriole disappears. Then, the flagellum migration occurs by a series of processes and gives rise to a spermatozoon. The spermatozoon of A. incrassatus presents its own specificities: it exhibits an evolution of the centriolar derivative characterized by only nine peripheral elements deprived of a central element in the anterior part, then nine peripheral and one central element, and finally, nine peripheral elements with two central elements. An assumption is emitted on a probable correspondence of the evolution of the derivative centriolar during the spermiogenesis and the evolution that occurs in the spermatozoon. Protein granules also show different sizes and forms, full or emptied of their contents compared with data on other Acanthocephala.

International audience; Lernanthropus kroyeri (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida: Lernanthropidae) is a gill parasite found on the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. During a survey of sea bass of Corsican fish farms, we studied the biology of this parasite under culture conditions. We first chose to conduct a scanning electron microscopic study to give additional information about the lifestyle of the parasite. Our examinations made it possible to reveal some unreported superficial structures including details not described previously. Specializations associated with the tegument, in particular, sensory structures and anchoring systems were studied to understand the mechanisms of survival and dispersal of the species. Patterns variation of parasites communities was examined by taking into account environmental factors, such as temperature or salinity, and physiological parameters related to host. The relation between parasites and location of fish was also studied to quantify the importance of site influence on parasite communities. Prevalence and abundances of the infections in different culture systems, fish stocks, and sampling seasons are given. L. kroyeri was significantly present during spring and summer, coinciding with a period of increasing temperature. Significant differences were found grouping data by host size, with higher infection levels in the larger-sized fish.

The mature spermatozoon of Cricocephalus albus is filiform, tapered at both ends and shows the following features: 2 axonemes of different lengths presenting the 9 + “1” trepaxonematan pattern, 2 bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, a mitochondrion and a nucleus. Nevertheless, the particularity of the spermatozoon of C. albus is its anterior extremity with an apical electron-dense material associated with extramembranar ornamentation, a cytoplasmic dorsolateral expansion and spine-like bodies. To our knowledge, such an anterior extremity of the spermatozoon has not previously been described from a species of the superfamily Pronocephaloidea. Our study provides new data on the mature gamete of C. albus in order to improve our understanding of the pronocephaloidean phylogenetic relationships.

Pedestrian flows to and from a rapid transit line station follow distance-decay functions; an exponential model with a second-degree exponent fits well the data. Observed flows in function of the distance are indicated. The average walking distance is larger than usually assumed: eleven minutes, i.e., one kilometer. The use of the subway by each professional category follows a definite pattern.

International audience; Sparicotyle chrysophrii infections were highlighted during a parasitological monitoring carried out on cultured Gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata Linnaeus 1758 from aquaculture sites in Corsica. Factors and biological mechanisms regulating parasites populations, particularly controlling the infestation and survival of monogeneans have been studied. Variations in infection support the hypotheses that the main factor determining the infection of S. chrysophrii was temperature and that the parasite life cycle could be influenced by fish size and fish age. One hundred forty-nine of 280 S. aurata studied were infected. Seasonal differences in prevalence of infection were observed in all farms studied. A similar pattern was observed for parasite abundance with maximal infection levels occurring when water temperature were lower. A statistically significant dependence between infection and host size was also observed. The study of the surface topography of S. chrysophrii with scanning electron microscopy highlighted morphological adaptations not previously described. Parasites have developed diverse mechanisms of survival within the host that facilitate the establishment of infection. We mainly studied sensory structures and the anchoring systems of the parasite, i.e., filaments of eggs and haptor, enabling it to ensure the dispersal and survival of the species.
