The geology beneath Thwaites Glacier, the Antarctic glacial catchment most vulnerable to climate change, is unknown. Thwaites Glacier lies within the West Antarctic Rift System, but details of the subglacial geology relevant to glacial flow, including sediment availability, underlying lithology, and heat flux, are lacking. We present the first sketch map of the subglacial geology of Thwaites Glacier, interpreted from maps of airborne gravity, magnetic and radar data, supported by 2D models and 3D inversion of subsurface properties, and the regional geological context. A zone of Cretaceous mafic magmatism extending ~200 km inland from the coast is interpreted, while sedimentary basins are restricted to a region 150 to 200 km inboard of the coast, underlying just 20% of the catchment. Several granitic subglacial highlands are identified, forming long-lived topographic highs. Our geological interpretation places constraints on the basal properties of Thwaites Glacier, laying the foundation for both improved predictions of ice sheet change and studies of West Antarctic tectonics.

Supraglacial lakes are expected to play a crucial role in determining the ice sheet mass balance in a warming climate. Water ponding lowers the albedo of the ice surface, establishing a positive feedback of melting processes that might be further enhanced by the projected rising temperatures. Lake drainages can have particularly large impacts on ice shelves depending on their location and surrounding topography. Drainage events on grounded ice can transport water to the ice/bedrock interface, affecting the sliding of the ice sheet. On floating ice shelves, lake drainage events have been linked to fracture formation potentially leading to ice shelf collapse.Over the past decade, observations of supraglacial lake drainage events have mainly been gathered from the Greenland ice sheet, while observations of drainage events remain rare in Antarctica. While some limited examples have been reported in the literature, it is not yet known how common these events are, the likelihood of their formation from the grounding line, and how their recurrence could impact Antarctic ice shelves. Observations of Antarctic supraglacial lake drainages are challenging as the lakes often have lids of ice covering liquid water, and drainages can occur in winter when low light levels preclude the use of optical sensors. Since Sentinel-1 SAR imagery works independently from light and cloud conditions, it enables continuous monitoring throughout the year providing further insights into their spatial and temporal evolution. The use of Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform for analyzing SAR images and detecting drainage events has shown the value of this platform as a tool to monitor changes over several locations and to efficiently deal with the increasing workload of satellite data. Here we demonstrate the use of SAR backscatter to reliably detect drainage events to map their location also during the winter months and to locate their prevalence around the Antarctic coastline.

Vanderford Glacier is one of the fastest retreating glaciers in East Antarctica, with approximately 18.6 km of grounding line retreat since 1996. Together with the Totten Glacier, the Vanderford Glacier is a key outlet glacier of the Aurora Subglacial Basin (ASB), which contains approximately 7 m of global sea level equivalent, of which ~3.5 m is vulnerable to ocean driven melting, and is rapidly losing mass. While the Totten Glacier currently discharges almost twice as much ice as the Vanderford Glacier, sediment records from the Sabrina and Knox Coast Sectors indicate that the Vanderford Glacier has had sedimentation rates over twice that at Totten in the past. Here, we examine the current flow configuration between Vanderford and Totten Glaciers and drivers of it, including interactions between the subglacial topography, hydraulic potential, climate, and ice sheet dynamics. We use the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM) under experiments of heightened ocean warming concentrated at Vanderford Glacier, and heightened surface mass balance at Totten Glacier, to show that the present-day flow configuration between the Totten and Vanderford Glaciers is tenuous. Rerouting towards Vanderford Glacier could occur under even minor changes in surface elevation at both glaciers. Such rerouting potentially exposes large parts of the underbelly of the ASB to enhanced ocean-driven ice shelf melting in the event of rapid retreat of Vanderford Glacier, with implications for global sea level rise.

The discovery of Antarctica's deepest subglacial trough beneath the Denman Glacier, combined with high rates of basal melt at the grounding line, has caused significant concern over its vulnerability to retreat. Recent attention has therefore been focusing on understanding the controls driving Denman Glacier's dynamic evolution. Here we consider the Shackleton system, comprised of the Shackleton Ice Shelf, Denman Glacier, and the adjacent Scott, Northcliff, Roscoe and Apfel glaciers, about which almost nothing is known. We widen the context of previously observed dynamic changes in the Denman Glacier to the wider region of the Shackleton system, with a multi-decadal time frame and an improved biannual temporal frequency of observations in the last 7 years (2015–2022). We integrate new satellite observations of ice structure and airborne radar data with changes in ice front position and ice flow velocities to investigate changes in the system. Over the 60-year period of observation we find significant rift propagation on the Shackleton Ice Shelf and Scott Glacier and notable structural changes in the floating shear margins between the ice shelf and the outlet glaciers, as well as features indicative of ice with elevated salt concentration and brine infiltration in regions of the system. Over the period 2017–2022 we observe a significant increase in ice flow speed (up to 50 %) on the floating part of Scott Glacier, coincident with small-scale calving and rift propagation close to the ice front. We do not observe any seasonal variation or significant change in ice flow speed across the rest of the Shackleton system. Given the potential vulnerability of the system to accelerating retreat into the overdeepened, potentially sediment-filled bedrock trough, an improved understanding of the glaciological, oceanographic and geological conditions in the Shackleton system are required to improve the certainty of numerical model predictions, and we identify a number of priorities for future research. With access to these remote coastal regions a major challenge, coordinated internationally collaborative efforts are required to quantify how much the Shackleton region is likely to contribute to sea level rise in the coming centuries.

Geophysics has become a fundamental tool for the characterisation of dam structures and the identification of subsurface defects. However, evolving a geophysical technique to a monitoring solution for observing subsurface water flow is considered an important step to help water companies and governing bodies achieve their aims related to climate resilience, water supply targets and for lengthening the design life of critical infrastructure. The paper shows how monitoring of self-potential voltages using the SPiVolt system developed by TerraDat has successfully mapped water flow through the downstream shoulder of a Victorian-era embankment dam, and how these water flow paths responded to changes in the reservoir level and weather events such as heatwaves and rainfall. The study has also shown the importance of using a multi-technique geophysical survey to provide a wider context and deeper understanding of dam structures. The methodology described in this paper has the potential to not only provide a low-cost solution to monitoring embankment dams but can also be applied to numerous scenarios including landslide investigations, peatlands and flood defences.

The physical properties of the ice column are fundamental to the deformation and flow of glaciers and ice sheets. With a warming climate, surface meltwater is ever increasingly being routed and distributed throughout the ice column changing the mechanical and hence thermal properties of the ice and leading to accelerated ice flow and ice mass loss. Since the early 1990s, ice mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has contributed ~10% of the mean global sea level rise. Seismic waves have routinely been used to study the physical characteristics of glaciers and ice sheets due to their sensitivity to both mechanical and thermal properties of ice. Traditionally, reflection seismic surveys have been chosen as the primary seismic approach but this survey method can suffer from difficult logistics in polar regions. Recent advancements in ambient noise methods and the permanent installation of a seismic network in Greenland now permit the long term study of the ice properties of the GrIS.Rayleigh wave ellipticity measurements (the horizontal-to-vertical ratio of Rayleigh wave particle motions) are particularly sensitive to the subsurface structure beneath a seismic station. Using the polarisation properties of seismic noise, we extract Rayleigh wave ellipticity measurements from the Earth’s ambient noise for on-ice stations deployed in Greenland from 2012-- 2018. For wave periods sensitive to the ice sheet (T ≤ 3.5 s), we observe significant deviation between ellipticity measurements extracted from noise and synthetic fundamental mode calculations using a single ice column. Using a forward modelling approach we show: (1) a slow seismic shear-wave velocity at the near surface, (2) seismic attenuation, quantified as the quality factor Q, is sensitive to the temperature, water content and density of the ice and (3) the excitation of Rayleigh wave overtones plays a leading role in perturbing the ellipticity. Our results highlight how the inclusion of Q and overtone information can fill important gaps in our knowledge of ice sheet temperature, density and water content, which are important for predictions of the future evolution of the GrIS.

Boreal forests have a large impact on the global greenhouse gas balance and their soils constitute an important carbon (C) reservoir. Mature boreal forests are typically a net CO

Antarctica preserves Earth’s largest ice sheet which, in response to climate warming, may lose ice mass and raise sea level by several metres. The ice-sheet bed exerts critical controls on dynamic mass loss through feedbacks between water and heat fluxes, topographic forcing and basal sliding. Here we show that through hydrogeological processes, sedimentary basins amplify critical feedbacks that are known to impact ice-sheet retreat dynamics. We create a high-resolution subglacial bedrock classification for Antarctica by applying a supervised machine learning method to geophysical data, revealing the distribution of sedimentary basins. Sedimentary basins are found in the upper reaches of Antarctica’s most rapidly changing ice streams, including Thwaites and Pine Island Glaciers. Hydro-mechanical numerical modelling reveals that where sedimentary basins exist, water discharge rate scales with the rate of ice unloading and the resulting hydrological instabilities are likely to amplify further retreat and unloading. These results indicate that the presence of a sedimentary bed in the catchment focuses instabilities that increase the vulnerability of the ice streams to rapid retreat and enhanced dynamic mass loss.

Recent attention has therefore been focusing on understanding the governing dynamic controls, although knowledge of the wider regional context and timescales over which the future responses may occur remains poor. Here we consider the whole Shackleton system, comprising of the Shackleton ice shelf, Denman Glacier and adjacent Scott, Northcliffe, Roscoe and Apfel glaciers, about which almost nothing is known. We widen the context of previously observed dynamic changes in the Denman Glacier into the wider region of the Queen Mary and Knox coasts; with a multi-decadal timeframe and an improved biannual temporal frequency of observations in the last seven years (2014–21). We integrate new satellite observations of ice structure, changes in ice front position and ice-flow velocities to investigate changes in the system. We furthermore use the BISICLES ice sheet model to assess the sensitivity and simulate the response times of the Queen Mary and Knox coasts to hypothetical disintegration of its floating ice areas, in response to coupled ocean and atmospheric forcing. Over the 60-year period of observation, the Queen Mary and Knox coasts do not appear to have changed significantly and higher frequency observations have not revealed any significant annual or sub-annual variations in ice flow. A previously observed increase in the ice flow speed of the Denman Glacier has not continued beyond 2008, and we cannot identify any related change in the surface structure of the system since then. We do, however, observe more significant change in the Scott Glacier, with an acceleration in ice flow associated with calving and progressing from the ice front along the floating tongue since early 2020. No changes in surface structure or ice flow speed are observed closer to the grounded ice. Our upper limit numerical simulations for a 400-year period are consistent with noticeable grounding line retreat in the Denman Glacier in the next two centuries if all floating ice were lost, before stabilising again in the third century from now. This equates to around 6 cm of sea level rise, a small contribution when compared to other areas of East Antarctica expected to change over the same time frame. It is clear that current knowledge is insufficient to explain the observed spatial and temporal changes in the dynamic behaviour of the grounded and floating sections in the Shackleton system. Given the potential vulnerability of the system to accelerating retreat better data recording the glaciological, oceanographic, and geological conditions in the Queen Mary and Knox coasts are required to improve the certainty of numerical model predictions. With access to these remote coastal regions a major challenge, coordinated internationally collaborative efforts are required to quantify how much the Queen Mary and Knox coastal region is likely contribute to sea level rise in the coming centuries.

Large swathes of the margin of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet experience pronounced surface melting during the austral summer. The nature and temporal evolution of evolving surface hydrological systems are poorly known, however, as are their potential connections with englacial and subglacial water systems and their effects on ice dynamics. We have acquired helicopter-based ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical self-potential (SP), broadband passive seismic and GNSS data to delineate the geometry and monitor the temporal evolution of the subsurface hydrological system of the marine-terminating Sørsdal Glacier, Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, between the austral summers of 2017-18 and 2018-19. Our data reveal the presence of a shallow englacial hydrological system that is connected to surface lakes upstream of the grounding line and, surprisingly, is active not only in the austral summer but also through the Antarctic winter. Here we illustrate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the englacial hydrological system and its susceptibility to tidal forcing through the Antarctic winter. Our observations are consistent with persistent year-round redistribution of mass from grounded to floating portions of at the East Antarctic margin, with far-reaching consequences for ice shelf stability.

Subglacial and ice-sheet marginal sedimentary basins have very different physical properties to crystalline bedrock and, therefore, form distinct conditions that influence the flow of ice above. Sedimentary rocks are particularly soft and erodible, and therefore capable of sustaining layers of subglacial till that may deform to facilitate fast ice flow downstream. Furthermore, sedimentary rocks are relatively permeable and thus allow for enhanced fluid flux, with associated impacts on ice-sheet dynamics, including feedbacks with subglacial hydrologic systems and transport of heat to the ice-sheet bed. Despite the importance for ice-sheet dynamics there is, at present, no comprehensive record of sedimentary basins in the Antarctic continent, limiting our capacity to investigate these influences. Here we develop the first version of an Antarctic-wide spatial database of sedimentary basins, their geometries and physical attributes. We emphasise the definition of in-situ and undeformed basins that retain their primary characteristics, including relative weakness and high permeability, and therefore are more likely to influence ice sheet dynamics. We define the likely extents and nature of sedimentary basins, considering a range of geological and geophysical data, including: outcrop observations, gravity and magnetic data, radio-echo sounding data and passive and active-source seismic data. Our interpretation also involves derivative products from these data, including analyses guided by machine learning. The database includes for each basin its defining characteristics in the source datasets, and interpreted information on likely basin age, sedimentary thickness, surface morphology and tectonic type. The database is constructed in ESRI geodatabase format and is suitable for incorporation in multifaceted data-interpretation and modelling procedures. It can be readily updated given new information. We define extensive basins in both East and West Antarctica, including major regions in the Ross and Weddell Sea embayments and the Amundsen Sea region of West Antarctica, and the Wilkes, Aurora and Recovery subglacial basins of East Antarctica. The compilation includes smaller basins within crystalline-bedrock dominated areas such as the Transantarctic Mountains, the Antarctic Peninsula and Dronning Maud Land. The distribution of sedimentary basins reveals the combined influence of the tectonic and glacial history of Antarctica on the current and future configuration of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and highlights areas in which the presence of dynamically-evolving subglacial till layers and the exchange of groundwater and heat with the ice sheet bed are more likely, contributing to dynamic behaviour of the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Boreal forest ecosystems constitute the second largest forest biome after tropical rainforests yet have been estimated to contribute to 18-20% of the global terrestrial CO2 sink (~0.68±0.88 Pg C y-1 2006-2018) making our understanding of them critical during this period of changing climate. In Fennoscandia, ~90% of the boreal forest is managed. Increasing the amount of managed forests worldwide has been suggested as a way to improve C mitigation potential. However, due to the complex environmental effects caused by, for example, rotation forestry, further investigations are needed to understand all interactions that may occur. These potential ecosystem changes are not confined to the above ground environment, but also affect the subsurface, a part of the forest ecosystem that is often lesser understood spatially. One crucial consideration is alterations to the subsurface hydrogeology, which may lead to shifts in the local soil moisture regime, water table depth and depths to capillary zones. Such changes could have strong effects on localized greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. During the period of 2017-2020, we have conducted extensive hydrogeophysical investigations at the ICOS Norunda forest research site in Sweden (30 km north of Uppsala). The Norunda boreal forest research station is part of the European Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and offers one of the longest (>20 y) timeseries of local micrometeorological and GHG flux measurements. Here we have integrated electrical resistivity tomography (2-D profiling and monitoring), self-potential (2-D profiling and 3-D monitoring) and ground penetrating radar survey results to increase our knowledge of the local subsurface. Combining our geophysical observations with a priori knowledge of GHG fluxes in different zones of the forest (e.g. mature, thinned, marshy) allows us to investigate the relationships between hydrogeology and surface GHG fluxes. Here we present the highlight results from our study that include (i) spatial characterization of differing hydrogeological zones within Norunda from ERT, SP and GPR; and (ii) an evaluation of the importance of subsurface hydrology for soil GHG fluxes.

Supraglacial lakes play a central role in storing melt water, enhancing surface melt and ultimately in driving ice flow and ice shelf melt through injecting water into the subglacial environment and through facilitating fracturing. Here, we develop a model for the drainage of supraglacial lakes through the dissipation-driven incision of a surface channel. The model consists of the St Venant equations for flow in the channel, fed by an upstream lake reservoir, coupled with an equation for the evolution of channel elevation due to advection, uplift and downward melting. After reduction to a ‘stream power’-type hyperbolic model, we show that lake drainage occurs above a critical rate of water supply to the lake due to the backward migration of a shock that incises the lake seal. The critical water supply rate depends on advection velocity and uplift (or more precisely, drawdown downstream of the lake) as well as model parameters such as channel wall roughness and the parameters defining the relationship between channel cross-section and wetted perimeter. Once lake drainage does occur, it can either continue until the lake is empty, or terminate early, leading to oscillatory cycles of lake filling and draining, with the latter favoured by large lake volumes and relatively small water supply rates.

International audience; The seismoelectric method holds great promise in the delineation and hydraulic characterization of thin subglacial layers of deformable sediments, subglacial water bodies, and deeper groundwater and heat‐bearing rocks. Of particular value are subglacial interfacial conversions and, potentially, evanescent electromagnetic waves converted at shallow englacial interfaces. We present three case studies that examine the seismoelectric direct field in wet snow, coseismic responses of wet glacier ice and till substrate, and interfacial conversions in a dry glacier and bedrock substrate, having amplitudes on respective orders of ~10^1–10^2, 10^0–10^1, and 10^{−3} mV. The electrokinetically controlled direct field and coseismic responses are large and consistent with strong electrical streaming potential amplitudes in wet snow and wet glacier ice, probably because electrical conductivities of meltwaters are commonly very low (~10^{−4}–10^{−6} S/m). Interfacial conversions in the wet glacier case may likewise have been amplified, but could not be unequivocally identified here due to a lack of diagnostic move‐out information. In the dry glacier case, direct field and coseismic effects were negligible and interfacial responses readily detected despite their small amplitudes. Vast swathes of continental ice sheets and glaciers reside in electromagnetically quiet environments, and have dry upper ice, firn, and snow layers as well as substrates saturated with low‐conductivity meltwaters. They should therefore provide favorable environments for the measurement and physical evaluation of interfacial conversions from either wet or dry basal environments, with crucial implications for the dynamics, hydrology, microbiology, and thermal budget of and methane deposits beneath the world's ice sheets and glaciers.

In recent decades, rapid ice shelf disintegration along the Antarctic Peninsula has had a global impact through enhancing outlet glacier flow and hence sea level rise and the freshening of Antarctic Bottom Water. Ice shelf thinning due to basal melting results from the circulation of relatively warm water in the underlying ocean cavity. However, the effect of sub-shelf circulation on future ice shelf stability cannot be predicted accurately with computer simulations if the geometry of the ice shelf cavity is unknown. To address this deficit for Larsen C Ice Shelf, West Antarctica, we integrate new water column thickness measurements from recent seismic campaigns with existing observations. We present these new data here along with an updated bathymetry grid of the ocean cavity. Key findings include a relatively deep seabed to the southeast of the Kenyon Peninsula, along the grounding line and around the key ice shelf pinning-point of Bawden Ice Rise. In addition, we can confirm that the cavity's southern trough stretches from Mobiloil Inlet to the open ocean. These areas of deep seabed will influence ocean circulation and tidal mixing and will therefore affect the basal-melt distribution. These results will help constrain models of ice shelf cavity circulation with the aim of improving our understanding of sub-shelf processes and their potential influence on ice shelf stability. The datasets are comprised of all the new point measurements of seabed depth. We present the new depth measurements here, as well as a compilation of previously published measurements. To demonstrate the improvements to the sub-shelf bathymetry map that these new data provide we include a gridded data product in the Supplement of this paper, derived using the additional measurements of both offshore seabed depth and the thickness of grounded ice. EGU General Assembly 2020 Online, 4-8 May 2020, B asal slip is an important mechanism by which glaciers and ice-sheets flow, and is a major source of uncertainty in simulations of ice-mass loss and sea level rise from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). Sub-ice geology is a dominant control on ice flow velocity with fast flow often coinciding with the presence of deformable subglacial till eroded from underlying sedimentary rocks. The subglacial geology of Greenland has received relatively little attention thus far and its control on ice flow is poorly understood. Seismic studies of the crust beneath the GrIS have been limited due to a lack of seismic stations and the reliance on earthquake event data. However, in the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in the number of both permanent and temporary seismic stations deployed in Greenland as well developments in ambient noise methods, allowing for improved spatial resolution of crustal geology. Ellipticity measurements, the ratio of the horizontal to vertical component of a Rayleigh wave, have been shown to be particularly sensitive to the geological structure directly beneath the station. Ambient noise H/V measurements have been used for decades in geotechnical and civil engineering for site characterisation, making them a well-suited technique to determine the subglacial geology of the GrIS. Using all available broadband stations deployed on Greenland from 2012 to 2018 we extract Rayleigh wave ellipticity measurement from ambient noise data using the degree-of-polarization (DOP) method where meaningful signals are defined as a waveform with an arbitrary polarization which remains stable for a given time window. We invert these ellipticity measurements in the period range of 4 ¿ 9 s to generate Vs profiles of the first 5 km beneath each station. Our inversions indicate that: (1) off-ice stations along the margins of the GrIS produce a good agreement with the litho1.0 model to within error and (2) an additional subglacial layer 1.0 - 2.0km thick with a Vs < 3.0km is necessary to match the data recorded at several of the on-ice stations. We attribute these observations to the widespread presence of sedimentary rocks beneath the GrIS, potentially capable of sustaining extensive subglacial till layers that can support enhanced basal slip.

Estimations of peatland carbon stocks often use generalised values for peat thickness and carbon content. Ground penetrating radar (GPR), a rapid technique for field data collection, has been increasingly demonstrated as an appropriate method of mapping peat thickness. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data as a method for understanding peatland surface elevation are also becoming more widely available. Reliable mapping and quantification of site-specific carbon stocks (e.g. upland raised bogs) is therefore, becoming increasingly feasible, providing a valuable contribution to regional, national and potentially global carbon stock assessments. This is particularly important because raised bogs, such as those found in South Wales are considerable carbon stores. They are, however, susceptible to climate warming owing to their southerly location within the UK. Accurate estimates of peatland carbon stocks has broader importance because world-wide peatland carbon stores are significant and threatened by climate change, posing a substantial challenge not only due to climate feedbacks if this stored carbon is released into the atmosphere, but also the impact on the other ecosystem services that they provide. Here, we assess the value of an integrated GPR, LiDAR and Geographic Information System (GIS) approach to improve estimation of regional carbon stocks. We apply the approach to three ombrotrophic raised bogs in South Wales, UK, selected for their conservation value and their topographically-confined raised bog form. GPR and LiDAR are found to be well suited, respectively, to mapping peat thickness at bog scale and surface elevation, thus allowing surface and basal topographies to be evaluated using GIS. In turn, this allows peat volumes to be estimated. For the first time, we record values between 55,200 m3 and 163,000 m3 for the sites considered here. The greater confidence in these peat volume estimates results from the ability to calibrate the GPR velocity using a depth-to-target calibration with peat cores extracted at locations encompassing the deepest bog area. Peat thickness is mapped at the bog scale with near centimetre precision, improving the robustness of subsequent volume calculations and our understanding of the contribution of these small but numerous sites to regional carbon stocks. Our evaluation shows that GPR corresponds well with conventional manual probing but is minimally invasive and therefore less disturbing of sensitive peatland sites, while also offering improved coverage and spatial resolution with less time and cost. In combination with measured bulk density and organic carbon contents, these peat volumes allow carbon stocks to be estimated with greater confidence compared to conventional approaches, having values between 2181 ± 122 tonnes carbon and 6305 ± 351 tonnes carbon at our three sites.

Following a southward progression of ice-shelf disintegration along the Antarctic Peninsula, Larsen C Ice Shelf is the focus of ongoing investigation regarding its future stability. The ice shelf is known to be experience surface melt, and commonly features surface meltwater ponds. Here, we use a flowline model and a firn density model to date and interpret observations of melt-affected ice layers found within five 90 m boreholes distributed across the ice shelf. We find that units of ice within the boreholes, which have densities exceeding those expected under normal compaction metamorphism, correspond to two climatic warm periods within the last 300 years on the Antarctic Peninsula. The more recent warm period, from the 1960s onwards, has generated distinct sections of dense ice in two boreholes in Cabinet Inlet, close to the Antarctic Peninsula mountains – a region currently affected by föhn winds. Previous work has classified these layers as refrozen pond ice, requiring large quantities of mobile liquid water to form. Our flowline model shows that, whilst preconditioning of the ice began in the late 1960s, it was probably not until the early 1990s that twentieth-century ponding began. The earlier warm period occurred during the 18th century and resulted in two additional sections of anomalously dense ice deep within the boreholes. The first, in one of the Cabinet Inlet boreholes, consists of ice characteristic of refrozen ponds and must have formed in an area currently featuring ponding. The second, in a mid-shelf borehole, formed at the same time in an area which now experiences significant annual melt. Further south on the shelf, the boreholes sample ice that is of an equivalent age but which does not exhibit the same degree of melt influence. This west–east and north–south gradient in past melt distribution resembles current spatial patterns of surface melt intensity. Using flowlines to trace the advection and submergence of continental ice identified in boreholes, we demonstrate that, even by the time the ice reaches the calving front, only the upper 40 to 50 % of the shelf is composed of meteoric ice accumulated on the shelf. This vertical composition implies that basal crevasses must be confined within continental and/or basally accreted ice, and therefore will be unaffected by current climate-induced firn compaction.

We use borehole optical televiewing (OPTV) to explore the internal structure of Larsen C Ice Shelf (LCIS). We report a suite of five ~90 m long OPTV logs, recording a light-emitting diode-illuminated, geometrically correct image of the borehole wall, from the northern and central sectors of LCIS collected during austral spring 2014 and 2015. We use a thresholding-based technique to estimate the refrozen ice content of the ice column and exploit a recently calibrated density-luminosity relationship to reveal its structure. All sites are dense and strongly influenced by surface melt, with frequent refrozen ice layers and mean densities, between the depths of 1.87 and 90 m, ranging from 862 to 894 kg m−3. We define four distinct units that comprise LCIS and relate these to ice provenance, dynamic history, and past melt events. These units are in situ meteoric ice with infiltration ice (U1), meteoric ice which has undergone enhanced densification (U2), thick refrozen ice (U3), and advected continental ice (U4). We show that the OPTV-derived pattern of firn air content is consistent with previous estimates, but that a significant proportion of firn air is contained within U4, which we interpret to have been deposited inland of the grounding line. The structure of LCIS is strongly influenced by the E-W gradient in fohn-driven melting, with sites close to the Antarctic Peninsula being predominantly composed of refrozen ice. Melting is also substantial toward the ice shelf center with >40% of the overall imaged ice column being composed of refrozen ice.

High-magnitude jokulhlaups, glacier margin position and ice-thickness have been identified as key controls on sandur evolution. Existing models however have focused primarily on observations made during short windows of time and often do not account for the subsequent modification of proglacial landsystems by repeated jokulhlaups or post-depositional modification due to melt out over decadal time-scales. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were used to reconstruct the development of large depressions on Skeiðararsandur, an outwash plain in southeast Iceland. These depressions measure up to 1 km in width and up to 13 m in depth and are associated with ice bodies up to 1 km in length and up to 150 m in height emplaced during a high-magnitude jokulhlaup in 1903 and subsequently buried by jokulhlaups in 1913 and 1922. The continued melting of the Harðaskriða ice bodies over a century following their emplacement, together with subsequent repeated burial, by high-magnitude jokulhlaups demonstrates that jokulhlaups may continue to serve as important controls on sandur evolution on a decadal to centennial timescale (101–102 years). The Harðaskriða depressions developed only following the retreat of the glacier margin after 1945, which highlights the controls of margin position on the evolution of the sandur. Margin position and thickness of the glacier profile was seen to affect not only the distribution and thickness of sediment emplaced during jokulhaups but also the rate and pattern of melt in the decades following the decoupling of the margin from the sandur. The jokulhlaup landsystem model signatures identified at this site may provide a useful analogue for interpreting landforms and strata emplaced by glacier margin fluctuations, jokulhlaups and melt out generated by retreating continental Pleistocene ice sheets.

Knowing where crevasses are is critical for planning safe on-ice field operations. Previous methods have ranged from real-time imaging of subsurface structures using ground penetrating radar, to mapping of crevasses over large areas using satellite imagery, with each method having it's own strengths and weaknesses. In this paper we compare the detection of crevasses at the Totten Glacier, East Antarctica, from helicopter-borne ground penetrating radar with satellite-based microwave synthetic aperture radar imagery. Our results show that the 80 MHz helicopter-borne ground penetrating radar was able to detect crevasses up to a depth of 70 m, with snow bridge thickness of >30 m. Comparison with TerraSAR-X (X-band, 9.6 GHz) satellite imagery indicates that the latter is highly effective, detecting 100% of crevasses with snow bridges of up to 4 m thick and detected 95% of crevasses with snow bridges up to 10 m thick. The ability of both methods to identify individual crevasses is affected by several factors including crevasse geometry, survey or satellite orientation and snow moisture content, and further experiments are planned to investigate performance under a wider range of conditions.

Suture zones are abundant on Antarctic ice shelves and widely observed to impede fracture propagation, greatly enhancing ice-shelf stability. Using seismic and radar observations on the Larsen C Ice Shelf of the Antarctic Peninsula, we confirm that such zones are highly heterogeneous, consisting of multiple meteoric and marine ice bodies of diverse provenance fused together. Here we demonstrate that fracture detainment is predominantly controlled by enhanced seawater content in suture zones, rather than by enhanced temperature as previously thought. We show that interstitial seawater can reduce fracture-driving stress by orders of magnitude, promoting both viscous relaxation and the development of micro cracks, the incidence of which scales inversely with stress intensity. We show how simple analysis of viscous buckles in ice-penetrating radar data can quantify the seawater content of suture zones and their modification of the ice-shelf’s stress regime. By limiting fracture, enhancing stability and restraining continental ice discharge into the ocean, suture zones act as vital regulators of Antarctic mass balance., Suture zones are abundant on Antarctic ice shelves and widely observed to impede fracture propagation. Here we show that fracture detainment is principally controlled by the zones’ enhanced seawater contents, reducing fracture-driving stresses by orders of magnitude and therefore greatly enhancing stability.

In recent decades, rapid ice-shelf disintegration along the Antarctic Peninsula has had a global impact through enhancing outlet glacier flow, and hence sea level rise, and the freshening of Antarctic Bottom Water. Ice shelf thinning due to basal melting results from the circulation of relatively warm water in the underlying ocean cavity. However, the effect of sub-shelf circulation on future ice-shelf stability cannot be predicted accurately with computer simulations if the geometry of the ice-shelf cavity is unknown. To address this deficit for Larsen C Ice Shelf, west Antarctica, we integrate new water-column thickness measurements with existing observations. We present these new data here along with an updated bathymetry grid of the ocean cavity. Key findings include relatively deep seabed to the south-east of the Kenyon Peninsula, along the grounding line and around the key ice shelf pinning point of Bawden Ice Rise. In addition, we can confirm that the cavity’s southern trough stretches from Mobiloil Inlet to the open ocean. These areas of deep seabed will influence ocean circulation and tidal mixing, and will therefore affect the basal-melt distribution. These results will help constrain models of ice-shelf cavity circulation with the aim of improving our understanding of sub-shelf processes and their potential influence on ice shelf stability. The data set comprises all point measurements of seabed depth and a gridded data product, derived using additional measurements of both offshore seabed depth and the thickness of grounded ice. We present all new depth measurements here as well as a compilation of previously published measurements used in the gridding process. The gridded data product is included in the supplementary material. Numerical models of contemporary as well as paleo-ice sheets suggest that groundwater and heat exchanges between subglacial sedimentary basins and the ice sheet above, can be substantial and influence the flow of ice above. So far, an approach for the measurement and assessment of such heat fluxes has not been available. Here, we summarise existing evidence for groundwater and heat exchanges between contemporary and paleo ice sheets and the substrate below. We then explain the utility of electromagnetic geophysical measurements in elucidating such exchanges, and present magnetotelluric synthetic models of the deep sedimentary basin beneath the Institute Ice Stream in West Antarctica by way of illustration. Finally, we propose a simple empirical model by which heat exchanges between subglacial sedimentary basins and the overlying ice sheet can be estimated to first-order from electromagnetic data.

An established rift in the Larsen C Ice Shelf, formerly constrained by a suture zone containing marine ice, grew rapidly during 2014 and is likely in the near future to generate the largest calving event since the 1980s and result in a new minimum area for the ice shelf. Here we investigate the recent development of the rift, quantify the projected calving event and, using a numerical model, assess its likely impact on ice shelf stability. We find that the ice front is at risk of becoming unstable when the anticipated calving event occurs.

Our ability to measure, quantify and assimilate hydrological properties and processes of snow in operational models is disproportionally poor compared to the significance of seasonal snowmelt as a global water resource and major risk factor in flood and avalanche forecasting. We show here that strong electrical self-potential fields are generated in melting in situ snowpacks at Rhone Glacier and Jungfraujoch Glacier, Switzerland. In agreement with theory, the diurnal evolution of self-potential magnitudes ( ∼ 60–250mV) relates to those of bulk meltwater fluxes (0–1.2 × 10−6m3s−1) principally through the permeability and the content, electrical conductivity and pH of liquid water. Previous work revealed that when fresh snow melts, ions are eluted in sequence and electrical conductivity, pH and self-potential data change diagnostically. Our snowpacks had experienced earlier stages of melt, and complementary snow pit measurements revealed that electrical conductivity ( ∼ 1–5 × 10−6Sm−1) and pH ( ∼ 6.5–6.7) as well as permeabilities (respectively ∼ 9.7 × 10−5 and ∼ 4.3 × 10−5m2 at Rhone Glacier and Jungfraujoch Glacier) were invariant. This implies, first, that preferential elution of ions was complete and, second, that our self-potential measurements reflect daily changes in liquid water contents. These were calculated to increase within the pendular regime from ∼ 1 to 5 and ∼ 3 to 5.5% respectively at Rhone Glacier and Jungfraujoch Glacier, as confirmed by ground truth measurements. We conclude that the electrical self-potential method is a promising snow and firn hydrology sensor owing to its suitability for (1) sensing lateral and vertical liquid water flows directly and minimally invasively, (2) complementing established observational programs through multidimensional spatial mapping of meltwater fluxes or liquid water content and (3) monitoring autonomously at a low cost. Future work should focus on the development of self-potential sensor arrays compatible with existing weather and snow monitoring technology and observational programs, and the integration of self-potential data into analytical frameworks., The Cryosphere, 10 (1), ISSN:1994-0416, ISSN:1994-0424

Summary Geophysical methods can be used to remotely characterize contaminated sites and monitor in situ enhanced remediation processes. We have conducted one sandbox experiment and one contaminated field investigation to show the robustness of electrical resistivity tomography and self-potential (SP) tomography for these applications. In the sandbox experiment, we injected permanganate in a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated environment under a constant hydraulic gradient. Inverted resistivity tomograms are able to track the evolution of the permanganate plume in agreement with visual observations made on the side of the tank. Self-potential measurements were also performed at the surface of the sandbox using non-polarizing Ag–AgCl electrodes. These data were inverted to obtain the source density distribution with and without the resistivity information. A compact horizontal dipole source located at the front of the plume was obtained from the inversion of these self-potential data. This current dipole may be related to the redox reaction occurring between TCE and permanganate and the strong concentration gradient at the front of the plume. We demonstrate that time-lapse self-potential signals can be used to track the kinetics of an advecting oxidizer plume with acceptable accuracy and, if needed, in real time, but are unable to completely resolve the shape of the plume. In the field investigation, a 3D resistivity tomography is used to characterize an organic contaminant plume (resistive domain) and an overlying zone of solid waste materials (conductive domain). After removing the influence of the streaming potential, the identified source current density had a magnitude of 0.5 A m−2. The strong source current density may be attributed to charge movement between the neighboring zones that encourage abiotic and microbially enhanced reduction and oxidation reactions. In both cases, the self-potential source current density is located in the area of strong resistivity gradient.

The Bristol Channel, including onshore areas, is critical for reconstructing Pleistocene glacial limits in southwest Britain. Debate about the precise regional southern limits of Devensian (Oxygen Isotope Stage (OIS) 2) and Anglian (OIS 12) glaciations has recently been rekindled. The Paviland Moraine (Llanddewi Formation), Gower, south Wales is conventionally regarded as Anglian in age. Its ‘old’ age has been based on reported highly weathered clasts, a subdued morphology and ‘field relationships’ to fossil beach sediments of now disputed age(s). Relatively little about its sedimentary characteristics has been previously published. This paper: (i) presents new sedimentological evidence including lithofacies analysis, XRF analysis and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) of sediment cores and electrical resistivity of a tied 3D field grid; (ii) re-assesses the proposed ‘old’ age; (iii) suggests a likely depositional origin; and (iv) discusses implications for regional glacial dynamics and future research priorities. The sediments comprise mostly dipping glacigenic diamict units containing mainly Welsh Coalfield erratics. The location and subdued moraine morphology are attributed to the hydrological influence of the underlying limestone, the local topography and ice-sheet behaviour rather than to long-term degradation. Moraine formation is attributed mainly to sediment gravity flows that coalesced to produce an ice-frontal apron. Neither geochemical data nor clasts indicate prolonged subaerial weathering and in-situ moraine sediments are restricted to a limestone plateau above and inland of fossil beach sediments. We recommend rejecting the view that the moraine represents the only recognized OIS 12 deposit in Wales and conclude that instead it marks the limit of relatively thin Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice in west Gower. This requires revision of the accepted view of a more restricted LGM limit in the area. We suggest that substrate hydrological conditions may be a more influential factor in moraine location and form than is currently acknowledged.

The mining and processing of metal ores in the UK has left a legacy of environmental degradation, and abandoned metal mines still pose a significant threat to terrestrial and fluvial environments. Flow gauging, water quality and geophysics were combined in an integrated assessment of surface and subsurface hydrological contamination at Esgair Mwyn, an abandoned mine in Ceredigion, Wales. Heavy metals discharged from the site are polluting downstream watercourses, leading to widespread Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) compliance failures. Through salt water dilution gauging and water quality sampling, a daily efflux of 876 g of heavy metals was calculated, with contaminant mobilisation occurring mainly in two primary surface streams draining an exposed tailings heap. Electrical resistivity tomography subsurface imaging found a seepage plane within the tailings lagoon wall, whilst the main tailings heap became increasingly saturated with depth. A large adjacent field also had a high potential to convey pollutants in solution, yet its morphological characteristics have limited transmission, as the area acts as a passive treatment type system. With remediation of already polluted water both difficult and expensive, this approach provides a cost-effective way to identify the origins and pathways of contaminants, informing mitigation strategies focussed on containment. Esgair Mwyn is not an isolated case, as abandoned metal mines release at least 860 t of heavy metals annually into UK water bodies. These techniques could reduce or prevent abandoned metal mine hydrological pollution for decades to come, and enable associated UK water bodies to comply with future water quality standards.

Moraine-dammed lakes at debris-covered glaciers are becoming increasingly common and pose significant outburst flood hazards if the dam is breached. While moraine subsurface structure and internal processes are likely to influence dam stability, only few sites have so far been investigated. We conducted electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys at two sites on the terminal moraine complex of the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal, to aid assessment of future terminus stability. The resistivity signature of glacier ice at the site (100-15 kΩ m) is more consistent with values measured from cold glacier ice and while this may be feasible, uncertainties in the data inversion introduce ambiguity to this thermal interpretation. However, the ERT data does provide a significant improvement to our knowledge of the subsurface characteristics at these sites, clearly showing the presence (or absence) of glacier ice. Our interpretation is that of a highly complex latero-terminal moraine, resulting from interaction between previous glacier advance, recession and outburst flooding. If the base-level Spillway Lake continues to expand to a fully formed moraine-dammed glacial lake, the degradation of the ice core could have implications for glacial lake outburst risk. We use a simple numerical model to test whether surface water influx to the bed of the interior Greenland ice sheet has the potential to cause significant subglacial channel growth similar to that observed near the ice-sheet margin and at alpine glaciers. We examine the effects on channel growth from (1) rapid supraglacial lake drainage events and (2) sustained water input into moulins. By assuming that all drainage occurs through subglacial channels and by prescribing favorable pressure conditions at the domain inlet, the model can provide upper bounds on channel growth. Our results indicate that R-channels do not grow significantly within the limited period of high pressure associated with lake drainage events. Subsequent channel growth only occurs with sustained pressures above overburden. Rapid closure of channels at low pressures suggests channels in the interior are unlikely to draw significant quantities of water from nearby distributed networks. These results indicate that other drainage mechanisms such as turbulent sheets or linked-cavity networks are likely to be of greater importance for interior subglacial drainage than the growth of channels.

[1] Antarctic ice shelves are fed primarily by the glaciers flowing into them. Downstream of promontories separating these glaciers, supercooled water can rise and freeze into suture zones, leading to the accretion of marine ice. Marine ice bodies have been found in several Antarctic ice shelves, but little is known about their detailed geometry, rate of accretion, or influence on ice dynamics. In this study, we investigate marine ice in a suture zone downstream of the Joerg Peninsula in the southern part of the Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula. We present ground penetrating radar data from which we infer the base of the meteoric ice and, in combination with GPS data and assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, estimate marine ice thickness within a suture zone. We show that the Joerg Peninsula suture zone contains marine ice layer, which is increasing in thickness along flow from ~140 m to 180 m over 20 km, implying an average basal accretion rate of ~0.5 m a−1 in our study area. We examined the impact of this inferred marine ice on ice shelf dynamics by modeling the suture zone within an ice flow model. The results, which replicate observed surface velocities and strain rates, show that the warmer and thus softer ice of the suture zone serves to channel shear deformation. This enables decoupling of neighboring flow units with different flow velocities, while maintaining the structural integrity of the ice shelf.
