Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas emitted by archaea in anaerobic environments such as wetland soils. Tidal freshwater wetlands are predicted to become increasingly saline as sea levels rise due to climate change. Previous work has shown that increases in salinity generally decrease CH4 emissions, but with considerable variation, including instances where salinization increased CH4 flux. We measured microbial community composition, biogeochemistry, and CH4 flux from field samples and lab experiments from four different sites across a wide geographic range. We sought to assess how site differences and microbial ecology affect how CH4 emissions are influenced by salinization. CH4 flux was generally, but not always, positively correlated with CO2 flux, soil carbon, ammonium, phosphate, and pH. Methanogen guilds were positively correlated with CH4 flux across all sites, while methanotroph guilds were both positively and negatively correlated with CH4 depending on site. There was mixed support for negative relationships between CH4 fluxes and concentrations of alternative electron acceptors and abundances of taxa that reduce them. CH4/salinity relationships ranged from negative, to neutral, to positive and appeared to be influenced by site characteristics such as pH and plant composition, which also likely contributed to site differences in microbial communities. The activity of site-specific microbes that may respond differently to low-level salinity increases is likely an important driver of CH4/salinity relationships. Our results suggest several factors that make it difficult to generalize CH4/salinity relationships and highlight the need for paired microbial and flux measurements across a broader range of sites.

Environmental mercury (Hg) contamination of the global tropics outpaces our understanding of its consequences for biodiversity. Knowledge gaps of pollution exposure could obscure conservation threats in the Neotropics: a region that supports over half of the worlds species, but faces ongoing land-use change and Hg emission via artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Due to their global distribution and sensitivity to pollution, birds provide a valuable opportunity as bioindicators to assess how accelerating Hg emissions impact an ecosystems ability to support biodiversity, and ultimately, global health. We present the largest database on Neotropical bird Hg concentrations (n = 2316) and establish exposure baselines for 322 bird species spanning nine countries across Central America, South America, and the West Indies. Patterns of avian Hg exposure in the Neotropics broadly align with those in temperate regions: consistent bioaccumulation across functional groups and high spatiotemporal variation. Bird species occupying higher trophic positions and aquatic habitats exhibited elevated Hg concentrations that have been previously associated with reductions in reproductive success. Notably, bird Hg concentrations were over four times higher at sites impacted by ASGM activities and differed by season for certain trophic niches. We developed this synthesis via a collaborative research network, the Tropical Research for Avian Conservation and Ecotoxicology (TRACE) Initiative, which exemplifies inclusive, equitable, and international data-sharing. While our findings signal an urgent need to assess sampling biases, mechanisms, and consequences of Hg exposure to tropical avian communities, the TRACE Initiative provides a meaningful framework to achieve such goals. Ultimately, our collective efforts support and inform local, scientific, and government entities, including Parties of the United Nations Minamata Convention on Mercury, as we continue working together to understand how Hg pollution impacts biodiversity conservation, ecosystem function, and public health in the tropics.

Wetlands are integral to the global carbon cycle, serving as both a source and a sink for organic carbon. Their potential for carbon storage will likely change in the coming decades in response to higher temperatures and variable precipitation patterns. We characterized the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition from 12 different wetland sites across the USA spanning gradients in climate, landcover, sampling depth, and hydroperiod for comparison to DOM in other inland waters. Using absorption spectroscopy, parallel factor analysis modeling, and ultra‐high resolution mass spectroscopy, we identified differences in DOM sourcing and processing by geographic site. Wetland DOM composition was driven primarily by differences in landcover where forested sites contained greater aromatic and oxygenated DOM content compared to grassland/herbaceous sites which were more aliphatic and enriched in N and S molecular formulae. Furthermore, surface and porewater DOM was also influenced by properties such as soil type, organic matter content, and precipitation. Surface water DOM was relatively enriched in oxygenated higher molecular weight formulae representing HUPHigh O/C compounds than porewaters, whose DOM composition suggests abiotic sulfurization from dissolved inorganic sulfide. Finally, we identified a group of persistent molecular formulae (3,489) present across all sites and sampling depths (i.e., the signature of wetland DOM) that are likely important for riverine‐to‐coastal DOM transport. As anthropogenic disturbances continue to impact temperate wetlands, this study highlights drivers of DOM composition fundamental for understanding how wetland organic carbon will change, and thus its role in biogeochemical cycling. Plain Language Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is often the most reactive form of organic carbon in wetlands, but its molecular characteristics and distribution are not well defined across different wetland types. We characterized DOM and analyzed dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations across 12 temperate USA wetlands during wet and dry seasons from both surface‐ and porewaters. Wetland DOM primarily originates from the landscapes with greater DOC concentrations than similar inland waters such as lakes and rivers. DOM composition differs mostly by geographic site, suggesting that forested wetlands contain more aromatic DOM compounds from vegetation and soil than grassland/herbaceous wetlands, which contain DOM that is more processed. DOM composition between surface and porewaters is influenced by local ecological properties such as soil content and precipitation, with porewater compositions heavily impacted by mineral interactions. Finally, we identified common molecular signatures across all wetlands that have also been found in the largest arctic rivers, highlighting the role of wetlands as potential organic carbon sources to rivers and coastal systems. As precipitation and temperature patterns continue to change across temperate regions, the balance between different carbon pools will likely respond, particularly between the distribution and composition of wetland surface and porewater organic matter. Quantifying continuous discharge can be difficult, especially for nascent monitoring efforts, due to the challenges of establishing gauging locations, sensor protocols, and installations. Some continuous discharge series generated by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) during its pre- and early-operational phases (2015–present) are marked by anomalies related to sensor drift, gauge movement, and incomplete rating curves. Here, we investigate the potential to estimate continuous discharge when discrete streamflow measurements are available at the site of interest. Using field-measured discharge as truth, we reconstructed continuous discharge for all 27 NEON stream gauges via linear regression on nearby donor gauges and/or prediction from neural networks trained on a large corpus of established gauge data. Reconstructions achieved median efficiencies of 0.83 (Nash–Sutcliffe, or NSE) and 0.81 (Kling–Gupta, or KGE) across all sites and improved KGE at 11 sites versus published data, with linear regression generally outperforming deep learning approaches due to the use of target site data for model fitting rather than evaluation only. Estimates from this analysis inform ∼199 site-months of missing data in the official record, and can be used jointly with NEON data to enhance the descriptive and predictive value of NEON's stream data products. We provide 5 min composite discharge series for each site that combine the best estimates across modeling approaches and NEON's published data. The success of this effort demonstrates the potential to establish "virtual gauges", sites at which continuous streamflow can be accurately estimated from discrete measurements, by transferring information from nearby donor gauges and/or large collections of training data.
