Abstract The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

Background: Assessing the real-world effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and understanding the incidence and severity of SARS-CoV-2 illness in children are essential to inform policy and guide health care professionals in advising parents and caregivers of children who test positive for SARS-CoV-2., Objective: This report describes the objectives and methods for conducting the Pediatric Research Observing Trends and Exposures in COVID-19 Timelines (PROTECT) study. PROTECT is a longitudinal prospective pediatric cohort study designed to estimate SARS-CoV-2 incidence and COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) against infection among children aged 6 months to 17 years, as well as differences in SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccine response between children and adolescents., Methods: The PROTECT multisite network was initiated in July 2021, which aims to enroll approximately 2305 children across four US locations and collect data over a 2-year surveillance period. The enrollment target was based on prospective power calculations and accounts for expected attrition and nonresponse. Study sites recruit parents and legal guardians of age-eligible children participating in the existing Arizona Healthcare, Emergency Response, and Other Essential Workers Surveillance (HEROES)-Research on the Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Essential Response Personnel (RECOVER) network as well as from surrounding communities. Child demographics, medical history, COVID-19 exposure, vaccination history, and parents/legal guardians' knowledge and attitudes about COVID-19 are collected at baseline and throughout the study. Mid-turbinate nasal specimens are self-collected or collected by parents/legal guardians weekly, regardless of symptoms, for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza testing via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay, and the presence of COVID-like illness (CLI) is reported. Children who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 or influenza, or report CLI are monitored weekly by online surveys to report exposure and medical utilization until no longer ill. Children, with permission of their parents/legal guardians, may elect to contribute blood at enrollment, following SARS-CoV-2 infection, following COVID-19 vaccination, and at the end of the study period. PROTECT uses electronic medical record (EMR) linkages where available, and verifies COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations through EMR or state vaccine registries., Results: Data collection began in July 2021 and is expected to continue through the spring of 2023. As of April 13, 2022, 2371 children are enrolled in PROTECT. Enrollment is ongoing at all study sites., Conclusions: As COVID-19 vaccine products are authorized for use in pediatric populations, PROTECT study data will provide real-world estimates of VE in preventing infection. A victim-centered approach to fighting sex trafficking can result in apprehension and prosecution of traffickers and offer needed services to survivors. However, law enforcement officers frequently arrest sex-trafficking survivors for prostitution in accordance with state law. This study examined the psychology of public reactions and judgments of sex-trafficking survivors demonstrating the importance of situational factors, cognitive stereotypes, and moral emotions. Using Stereotype Content Modeling to measure the stereotypes that 762 community members held about prostitutes, we found shared stereotypes that were low in competence (i.e., capable and skilled) and warmth (i.e., good-natured and friendly). These participants later read modified case facts from United States v. Bell (United States v. Bell, 761 F.3d (8th Cir. 2014)) that varied survivor history of prostitution, vulnerability, and prostitution as a subsequent livelihood. Participants who stereotyped prostitutes as low in warmth and competence were the ones most certain police should arrest the survivor. Moral emotion analyses further showed that a survivor with no prior prostitution history and who came from a nonvulnerable background invoked disgust and contempt, which predicted a higher certainty of the arrest. Moral emotions fully mediated the relationship between the interacting case facts and arrest certainty for the trafficking survivor. Future directions and policy implications are discussed. Intussusception is the most common cause of small bowel obstruction in young infants. Therefore a high index of suspicion and thorough knowledge of this condition is of major importance to be able to diagnose and treat this potentially life threatening condition. In this review we describe epdidemiology, etiology and clinical symptoms of intussuception. Furthermore, we describe diagnostic modalties, especially ultrasonography as the primary choice for diagnosis. In addition, non-operative treatment with different types of enema reduction techniques, and operative treatment by laparotomy and laparoscopy, and outcomes have been reviewed., (© Acta Chirurgica Belgica.)

Little is known about the effect of the social environment on HIV risk in gay men in northern Vietnam, particularly in rural areas. This qualitative research study conducted 4 key informant interviews and 30 in-depth interviews of men in two northern Vietnamese cities: Hanoi, a large city, and Thai Nguyen, a smaller town. Hanoi has experienced a growth in the number of places where gay men can socialize, access HIV prevention services, and discuss health issues. Thai Nguyen lacks these open venues. However, homosexuality is still highly stigmatized in the general population in both cities. This stigma affects the number of partners and level of sexual risk of participants. Also, men generally reported little communication between partners about sexual risk. While stigma in the general community is difficult to change, social environments where gay men can openly communicate creates an opportunity for HIV prevention and social support.

Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight, is an enterobacterial pathogen of Rosaceous plants including apple and pear. We have been studying the response of E. amylovora to oxidative stress because, during infection, the bacterium elicits an oxidative burst response in host plants. During the screening of a transposon mutant library for hydrogen peroxide sensitivity, we identified a mutant carrying an insertion in waaL, a gene involved in lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, that was more sensitive to hydrogen peroxide than the parental wild-type strain. We also confirmed that a waaL mutant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibited an increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide compared with the wild-type strain. The E. amylovora waaL mutant was also reduced in virulence, showed a decrease in twitching motility, and was more sensitive to polymyxin B than the wild type. Each of these phenotypes was complemented by the cloned waaL gene. Our results highlight the importance of the lipopolysaccharide layer to virulence in E. amylovora and the unexpected finding of an additional function of lipopolysaccharide in protection from oxidative stress in E. amylovora and P. aeruginosa.

A 76-year-old man was admitted with bilateral common iliac artery aneurysms found incidentally on computed tomography. Transfemoral digital subtraction arteriography demonstrated atherosclerotic plaques in the aorta with bilateral common iliac artery aneurysms and a coeliac axis aneurysm. The coeliac artery aneurysm was resected and an aortobifemoral bypass performed with reimplantation of the inferior mesenteric artery into the prosthesis. The patient was well when discharged 2 weeks after operation. The incidence, natural history and management of coeliac axis and iliac artery aneurysms are reviewed.

Pulsed EPR spectroscopy and selective removal of the iron-sulfur centers in photosystem 1 have been used to study forward electron transfer from the secondary electron acceptor A1. At cryogenic temperatures where forward electron transfer is inhibited, we have observed a g = 2.003 electron spin-echo signal presenting a characteristic phase shift. This out-of-phase signal is attributed to the electron spin-polarized pair P700+/A1-, it decays with t1/e = 23 microseconds, reflecting the recombination reaction. At room temperature the out-of-phase signal is also observed, but it decays with t1/c = 200 ns in untreated photosystem 1, due to forward electron transfer from A1- to one of the iron-sulfur centers. This rate is unchanged in Fe-SA/B-depleted PS1 but is lost when the iron-sulfur center Fe-Sx is removed. In the preparations depleted of all iron-sulfur centers the out-of-phase signal decays with t1/c = 1.3 microseconds, reflecting either the back reaction or the decay of polarization. These results demonstrate that the electron transfer pathway in photosystem 1 is P700-->A1-->Fe-SX-->Fe-SA/B.

Pseudoaneurysm of the femoral artery is a well known complication after diagnostic and therapeutic catheterisation. We report a case of voluminous postcatheterisation false aneurysm, which developed on a pre-existing deep femoral artery aneurysm. Infection by Staphylococcus aureus was demonstrated. After surgical exploration, rupture and external haemorrhage occurred before reconstructive surgery was possible. Due to the septic conditions only a lateral aneurysmorraphy was performed. Postoperative angiogram showed an acceptable result. An aneurysm of the deep femoral artery was also demonstrated on the contralateral side. This was scheduled for elective surgery. In conclusion, this complication could have been avoided by accurate puncture technique. Surgical exploration under local anaesthesia is ill-advised. Especially in patients with advanced vascular disease, non-invasive studies of the puncture site is recommended.

We compared serum levels and tolerability of oral amoxicillin in 30 healthy adults who each received 2.0 g of amoxicillin and, 1 week later, 3.0 g of the same preparation. Serum levels of amoxicillin were determined at 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours following its ingestion. Mean serum levels of amoxicillin were significantly higher after 3.0-g doses than after 2.0-g doses. Levels in females were higher than in males; this was a reflection of differences in body weights. Food intake had no effect on serum levels. The 2.0-g doses resulted in adequate serum levels; 6 hours after dosing levels were still substantially higher than the MICs for oral streptococci. Three individuals (10%) experienced mild gastrointestinal side effects after they received the 3.0-g doses; no side effects were noted after the 2.0-g doses. We propose that to prevent bacterial endocarditis in adults who are at risk, a single 2.0-g dose of oral amoxicillin may be adequate prophylaxis for dental, oral, or upper respiratory tract procedures.

As a result of the alarming increase in primary and secondary syphilis in the United States, congenital syphilis has resurged in many areas, including Detroit. Several maternal risk factors have been identified as contributing to the increase in congenital syphilis, the most important of which are poor prenatal care and the trading of sex for illicit drugs, specially "crack" cocaine. Contact tracing programs are currently ineffective. To prevent the continuing increase in congenital syphilis, a comprehensive prenatal care program starting in early pregnancy is essential. STS should be determined during pregnancy and may be required more than once in high-risk mothers. Results of STS must be verified before infants are discharged from nurseries. Obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatricians, and general practitioners should be more aware of the problem of congenital syphilis and the need for early intervention and treatment.
