Abstract

Immunocompromised individuals are predisposed to severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, with transplant recipients typically displaying impaired immune response to pathogens, due to typical life-long immunosuppressive treatment. In this work, the authors evaluate the immune response to Omicron subvariants BA.1 and BA.2 in organ transplant recipients across a diverse clinical spectrum.

2. Glaucoma as a cause of low vision

Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the Low Vision Services of the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital in Villa Clara with the aim of determining the incidence of glaucoma as a cause of low vision in our environment and the behavior of rehabilitation in those cases. Glaucoma is among the tree main causes of visual disability in the world, being chronic simple glaucoma the most common one. It commonly appears without symptoms, that is why it is called “a thief of sight”. Our study universe was the total amount of adult people attending to the Low Vision Services from September 1997 to September 2007. All the patients underwent a full clinical ophthalmologic assessment and low vision tests. From a total amount of 447 people 13.42 percent presented glaucoma as the cause of visual disability. Most of the patients were males (35); the most affected age group was over 60 years of age (53). Long range visual acuity improved in 45 eyes and none of them presented a worsening in this aspect. The visual field per eyes was: 64 within the limits of normality, 21 between 10°-6°, 17 eyes with 5° or less, and 18 eyes which resulted null. A total of 46 patients (76.67%) were considered rehabilitated when discharged; seven with conventional optical correction for short range vision and 39 with optical aids. Fourteen patients were not considered rehabilitated because they did not reached the goals they had when attended the consulting room, though they improved their visual acuity and, thus, their quality of life.

3. Macular degeneration related to age as a cause of low vision

Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study with the patients of the Low Vision Services at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Provincial University Hospital was carried out. The aim was to determine the incidence of macular degeneration related to age in our environment. This condition is a degenerative illness which affects the center of the retina in people over 60 years of age, being the second cause, after diabetes, of visual disability in elderly people. Our province presents one of the highest longevity rates in the country, thus, we wanted to assess the epidemiology of this illness and the behavior of visual rehabilitation in those cases. Our study universe was the whole of the patients who attended this service since its implementation; that is to say from September 1997 to December 2007. All the patients underwent a full clinical ophthalmologic assessment and low vision tests. From a total amount of 434 persons in the study, 7.83 percent presented macular degeneration related to age as a cause of visual disability. Most of the cases were females (64.70%); the most affected age group was between 70 and 79 years of age (14 cases); long range visual acuity improved in 39 eyes and none of them presented a worsening in this aspect. The 85.29 percent of the patients were already rehabilitated when discharged; six of them with conventional optical corrections for close range and 23 with optical aids. Five patients were not considered as rehabilitated because they did not reach the proposed goals, though they improved their visual acuity and therefore their quality of life.

It is true that they represent the heritage American aborigènes left to the nations built upon their territory. However, how to extract from these bumb objects, lacking any subsidiary data, some scientific, cultural and symbolic information? This article inquires answers to some of these questions.

Abstract

Background: Current management practices and outcomes in weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation are poorly understood. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, management, timings, risk for failure, and outcomes of weaning in patients requiring at least 2 days of invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods: WEAN SAFE was an international, multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study done in 481 intensive care units in 50 countries. Eligible participants were older than 16 years, admitted to a participating intensive care unit, and receiving mechanical ventilation for 2 calendar days or longer. We defined weaning initiation as the first attempt to separate a patient from the ventilator, successful weaning as no reintubation or death within 7 days of extubation, and weaning eligibility criteria based on positive end-expiratory pressure, fractional concentration of oxygen in inspired air, and vasopressors. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients successfully weaned at 90 days. Key secondary outcomes included weaning duration, timing of weaning events, factors associated with weaning delay and weaning failure, and hospital outcomes. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03255109. Findings: Between Oct 4, 2017, and June 25, 2018, 10 232 patients were screened for eligibility, of whom 5869 were enrolled. 4523 (77·1%) patients underwent at least one separation attempt and 3817 (65·0%) patients were successfully weaned from ventilation at day 90. 237 (4·0%) patients were transferred before any separation attempt, 153 (2·6%) were transferred after at least one separation attempt and not successfully weaned, and 1662 (28·3%) died while invasively ventilated. The median time from fulfilling weaning eligibility criteria to first separation attempt was 1 day (IQR 0–4), and 1013 (22·4%) patients had a delay in initiating first separation of 5 or more days. 26. Baseline gut microbiota diversity and composition and albendazole efficacy in hookworm-infected individuals

Abstract

Abstract Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections account for a significant global health burden, necessitating mass drug administration with benzimidazole-class anthelmintics, such as albendazole (ALB), for morbidity control. However, ALB efficacy shows substantial variability, presenting challenges for achieving consistent treatment outcomes. We have explored the potential impact of the baseline gut microbiota on ALB efficacy in hookworm-infected individuals through microbiota profiling and machine learning (ML) techniques. Our investigation included 89 stool samples collected from hookworm-infected individuals that were analyzed by microscopy and quantitative PCR (qPCR). Of these, 44 were negative by microscopy for STH infection using the Kato-Katz method and qPCR 21 days after treatment, which entails a cure rate of 49.4%. Microbiota characterization was based on amplicon sequencing of the V3–V4 16S ribosomal RNA gene region. Alpha and beta diversity analyses revealed no significant differences between participants who were cured and those who were not cured, suggesting that baseline microbiota diversity does not influence ALB treatment outcomes. Furthermore, differential abundance analysis at the phylum, family and genus levels yielded no statistically significant associations between bacterial communities and ALB efficacy. Utilizing supervised ML models failed to predict treatment response accurately. Our investigation did not provide conclusive insights into the relationship between gut microbiota and ALB efficacy. However, the results highlight the need for future research to incorporate longitudinal studies that monitor changes in the gut microbiota related to the infection and the cure with ALB, as well as functional metagenomics to better understand the interaction of the microbiome with the drug, and its role, if there is any, in modulating anthelmintic treatment outcomes in STH infections. Interdisciplinary approaches integrating microbiology, pharmacology, genetics and data science will be pivotal in advancing our understanding of STH infections and optimizing treatment strategies globally. Abstract

The reduction of chemical inputs due to fertilizer and pesticide applications is a target shared both by farmers and consumers in order to minimize the side effects for human and environmental health. Among the possible strategies, the use of biostimulants has become increasingly important as demonstrated by the fast growth of their global market and by the increased rate of registration of new products. In this work, we assessed the effects of five bacterial strains (Pseu-domonas fluorescens Pf4, P. putida S1Pf1, P. protegens Pf7, P. migulae 8R6, and Pseudomonas sp. 5Vm1K), which were chosen according to their previously reported plant growth promotion traits and their positive effects on fruit/seed nutrient contents, on a local onion cultivar and on zucchini. The possible variations induced by the inoculation with the bacterial strains on the onion nutritional components were also evaluated. Inoculation resulted in significant growth stimulation and improvement of the mineral concentration of the onion bulb, induced particularly by 5Vm1K and S1Pf1, and in different effects on the flowering of the zucchini plants according to the bacterial strain. The present study provides new information regarding the activity of the five plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) strains on onion and zucchini, two plant species rarely considered by the scientific literature despite their economic relevance.

Abstract

Background: The spread of the SARS-CoV2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease, profoundly impacted the surgical community. Recommendations have been published to manage patients needing surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey, under the aegis of the Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery, aims to analyze how Italian surgeons have changed their practice during the pandemic. Methods: The authors designed an online survey that was circulated for completion to the Italian departments of general surgery registered in the Italian Ministry of Health database in December 2020. Questions were divided into three sections: hospital organization, screening policies, and safety profile of the surgical operation. The investigation periods were divided into the Italian pandemic phases I (March–May 2020), II (June–September 2020), and III (October–December 2020). Results: Of 447 invited departments, 226 answered the survey. Most hospitals were treating both COVID-19-positive and -negative patients. The reduction in effective beds dedicated to surgical activity was significant, affecting 59% of the responding units. 12.4% of the respondents in phase I, 2.6% in phase II, and 7.7% in phase III reported that their surgical unit had been closed. 51.4%, 23.5%, and 47.8% of the respondents had at least one colleague reassigned to non-surgical COVID-19 activities during the three phases. There has been a reduction in elective (> 200 procedures: 2.1%, 20.6% and 9.9% in the three phases, respectively) and emergency (< 20 procedures: 43.3%, 27.1%, 36.5% in the three phases, respectively) surgical activity. The use of laparoscopy also had a setback in phase I (25.8% performed less than 20% of elective procedures through laparoscopy). 60.6% of the respondents used a smoke evacuation device during laparoscopy in phase I, 61.6% in phase II, and 64.2% in phase III. 33. Short-course Early Outpatient Remdesivir Prevents Severe Disease due to COVID-19 in Organ Transplant Recipients During the Omicron BA.2 Wave

Abstract

Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr) remain at risk of severe COVID-19. Several previous early therapies are no longer effective against new circulating variants. We performed a prospective cohort study in outpatient adult SOTr during the Omicron BA.2 wave (April-May 2022), to determine the effectiveness of 3 doses of remdesivir given within 7 days of symptoms onset. Patients were followed for at least 30 days. The primary outcome was hospitalization. Of 210 SOTr that had COVID-19, we included 192. The median age was 54.5 years and 61.5% were men. The most common transplants were kidney (41.7%), lung (19.3%), liver (18.8%), and heart (6.3%). Most patients (90.1%) had previously received ≥3 COVID-19 vaccine doses. Fifteen(7.8%) were hospitalized, 5(2.6%) required supplemental oxygen, 3(1.6%) ICU admission, and 2(1%) mechanical ventilation with 2(1%) deaths. Age and multiple comorbidities were risk factors for hospitalization. Early remdesivir significantly decreased the hospitalization rate: adjusted hazard ratio 0.12 (95%CI: 0.03 to 0.057). The adjusted number needed to treat to prevent one hospitalization was 15.2 (95%CI: 13.6 to 31.4). No patient that received early remdesivir needed ICU admission or died. In a cohort of SOTr with COVID-19 infection, administration of 3-dose early remdesivir independently reduced the disease severity.

Abstract

Background The spread of the SARS-CoV2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease, profoundly impacted the surgical community. Recommendations have been published to manage patients needing surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey, under the aegis of the Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery, aims to analyze how Italian surgeons have changed their practice during the pandemic. Methods The authors designed an online survey that was circulated for completion to the Italian departments of general surgery registered in the Italian Ministry of Health database in December 2020. Questions were divided into three sections: hospital organization, screening policies, and safety profile of the surgical operation. The investigation periods were divided into the Italian pandemic phases I (March–May 2020), II (June–September 2020), and III (October–December 2020). Results Of 447 invited departments, 226 answered the survey. Most hospitals were treating both COVID-19-positive and -negative patients. The reduction in effective beds dedicated to surgical activity was significant, affecting 59% of the responding units. 12.4% of the respondents in phase I, 2.6% in phase II, and 7.7% in phase III reported that their surgical unit had been closed. 51.4%, 23.5%, and 47.8% of the respondents had at least one colleague reassigned to non-surgical COVID-19 activities during the three phases. There has been a reduction in elective (> 200 procedures: 2.1%, 20.6% and 9.9% in the three phases, respectively) and emergency ( Conclusion This survey offers three faithful snapshots of how the surgical community has reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic during its three phases. The significant reduction in surgical activity indicates that better health policies and more evidence-based guidelines are needed to make up for lost time and surgery not performed during the pandemic.

Abstract

Background: Epidemic intelligence (EI) ensures early detection, assessment, and communication of public health threats. Threat reporting defines priorities and mobilize resources for surveillance, prevention, and control. In Portugal, the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) is responsible for EI and publishes a weekly public health threat report (RONDA). Changes in threats in regular threat reports since COVID-19 have not been previously described. We analysed changes in non-COVID threat reporting in the weekly threat report. Methods: Using the DGS Emergency Operations Centre’s threat reporting database, we compared threats reported in RONDAs from 2016 to 2022 in three sequential periods: P1 before COVID-19 (January 2016–March 2020), P2 during acute COVID-19 restrictions (April 2020–February 2022), and P3 in post-acute COVID-19 phase (February 2022–September 2022). We described the monthly average frequency of reports on non-COVID-19 threats in those periods considering different disease groups, geographical focus, and information sources. We estimated expected non-COVID-19 reports on threats using a forecast model fitted to the time series until March 2020 and compared observed and expected values. Results: Non-COVID-19 threats had a decrease in the monthly average frequency of reporting in period 2 (x¯1: 4.7 vs. x¯: 2.3, p < 0.001) compared to period 1. Using the forecast methods, there were 114 fewer non-COVID threats than the 162 expected (−70%) in period 2. In period 3, there were 105 more threats than expected (+256%). The ECDC and the WHO were the most frequent sources of information followed by national Public Health sources. Conclusions: During COVID-19, there was a decrease in reports on non-COVID threats in Portugal. COVID-19 possibly affected global EI, by shifting attention and resources from other threats to the pandemic. However, the number of threats that warrant follow-up and communication is increasing. Further research is necessary to inform the EI research and development agenda, to ensure that all relevant threats are detected, accessed, and communicated according to evolving EI objectives and priorities while resources and preparedness are guaranteed.

39. Impact of Vaccination and Early Monoclonal Antibody Therapy on Coronavirus Disease 2019 Outcomes in Organ Transplant Recipients During the Omicron Wave

Abstract

Background Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are at high risk for complications from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and vaccine breakthrough infections are common. We determined the effectiveness of ≥3 doses of mRNA vaccine and early monoclonal antibody therapy in reducing disease severity against the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant. Methods Prospective cohort study of consecutive SOT recipients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection referred to our transplant center who were followed for at least 30 days. The primary outcome was supplemental oxygen requirement. Effectiveness of sotrovimab and ≥3 vaccine doses was estimated using adjusted risk ratios (RR). Results Three hundred adult organ transplant recipients were included. Seventy-one patients (24.1%) were hospitalized, 44 (14.9%) required supplemental oxygen, 19 (6.5%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), 15 (5.1%) required mechanical ventilation (MV), and 13 (4.4%) died. On multivariate analysis, age and multiple comorbidities were risk factors for oxygen requirement. Both receipt of ≥3 vaccine doses prior to SARS-CoV-2 infection and receipt of sotrovimab in the first 7 days of symptom onset was associated with a reduction in the need for supplemental oxygen (RR 0.30 [95% confidence interval {CI}: .17 to .54] and RR 0.24 (95% CI: .1 to .59), respectively]. For sotrovimab, the number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent one patient requiring oxygen was 6.64 (95% CI: 4.56–13.66). Both sotrovimab use and having received ≥3 vaccine doses were also associated with a shorter hospitalization length of stay. Conclusions In a cohort of SOT recipients with Omicron variant COVID-19 infection, prior receipt of ≥3 mRNA vaccine doses and early monoclonal antibody therapy were independently associated with significantly reduced disease severity.

40. Teachers' stress experiences during COVID-19-related emergency remote teaching: Results from an exploratory study

Abstract

The study provides a portrait of teachers' stress experience in the face of the needed introduction of information systems (IS) during COVID-19-related emergency remote teaching. Researchers contacted the headmasters at several Italian schools, who choose teacher's representatives. The latters shared the online questionnaire among colleagues; the teachers voluntarily decided to participate. The cross-sectional study involved 237 Italian teachers (81.5% female; M-age = 50.20; SDage = 8.87). This survey wanted to detect information systems-related distress and eustress on the job, and technostress creators and inhibitors. Descriptive statistics, correlational analyses, and a multiple regression model using structural equation modeling were run. As according to the model, IS-related distress and eustress on the job were the dependent variables, technostress creators and inhibitors the independent ones, and respondents' gender and age the control ones. Both technostress creators and inhibitors showed significant relationships with IS-related distress and eustress. Technostress creators showed a positive relationship with IS-related distress and a negative one with IS-related eustress; conversely, technostress inhibitors showed an opposite pattern of relationships. Only technostress creators significantly associate to both age and gender in the model, suggesting that older, female teachers tended to experience more technostress creators. Due to the increases in remote work, the awareness of IS-related stress experiences represents a key factor to evaluate work-related risks and prevent stress-related problems. The results from this study suggest that using technologies can represent both a threat to one's well-being, highlighting the need to provide adequate trainings and support, but also a resource for personal enrichment.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Post-stroke dysphagia affects almost half of the survivors and severely influences quality of life, thus becoming swallowing rehabilitation of paramount importance. However, there is little adequate evidence on which the best rehabilitative strategy can be. Surface electromyography (sEMG) allows for recording swallowing muscles’ activity and provides real time visual feedback, as a biofeedback adjunctive technique to improve treatment outcome. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of biofeedback rehabilitation of swallowing through sEMG compared to standard techniques, in post-stroke dysphagia. Methods: A pilot-randomized controlled trial included 17 patients diagnosed with post-stroke dysphagia. Nine underwent sEMG-biofeedback rehabilitation; seven controls were submitted to control treatment, one dropout. The primary outcome was the functional oral intake scale (FOIS), secondary outcomes was pharyngeal clearance and safe swallowing, assessed through fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Results: FOIS improved in all patients, regardless of treatment. sEMG-biofeedback rehabilitation led to improvements of the pharyngeal clearance and swallowing safety. The rehabilitative effects appeared stable at 2-months follow-up. Conclusions: The application of biofeedback based on sEMG in post-stroke dysphagia patients resulted in an effective rehabilitative technique, in particular for pharyngeal clearance improvements and safe swallowing, thus reducing the risk of aspiration and malnutrition.

Abstract

Quercus pyrenaica Willd thrives in the intermediate zone between the Mediterranean sclerophyllous and the temperate deciduous forest. In December 2022, the presence of the bacteria Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) was confirmed in samples collected from a Quercus pyrenaica located in Sabrosa, Vila Real, Portugal. Following Xf infection, the transport of water and nutrients is hindered due to the occlusion of xylem vessels. This loss of hydraulic conductivity may lead to vessel blockage and subsequent embolism formation. The objective of this study was to investigate the interaction between Xf and Quercus pyrenaica tissues, as well as the mechanism by which the bacteria can spread through the plant's xylem vessels, ultimately resulting in the formation of vascular plugs. At the time of the sample collection (10 months post-detection), symptoms of Bacterial Leaf Scorch (BLS) began to appear. Examination of xylem vessels using both light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of various types of occlusions, predominantly tyloses. Additionally, fibrillar networks, gums, starch grains, and crystals were observed. The stem vessels exhibited significantly more occlusions compared to the leaves. Furthermore, individual bacterial cells were observed to be attached to the vessel wall. This implies that occlusions were primarily induced by tyloses and gums as a defensive response to the invasion of vascular pathogens, in addition to the pathogen itself. This study highlights the presence of starch grains in stems, which may function as a refilling mechanism, thereby preventing the loss of hydraulic conductivity in plants and potentially acting as a means to entrap the bacteria. These mechanisms exemplify the constitutive defense systems of the plant against Xf. Understanding the interaction between Xylella fastidiosa and Quercus pyrenaica is crucial, given that the latter species occupies nearly 95% of the natural distribution area of Portugal.

49. The paradigm of total body irradiation in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: Therapeutic effectiveness versus the challenges of toxicity

Abstract

Introduction: Total body irradiation (TBI) is part of the myeloablative conditioning for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in malignant hematologic disorders. This therapy has recently shown improved survival in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) compared to chemotherapy-based regimens. However, side effects are a significant limitation, especially in the pediatric population. Patients and methods: We retrospectively analyzed the survival of patients with ALL who underwent an HSCT at a tertiary hospital between 1996 and 2009 (N = 69 HSCT in 57 patients). We differentiated a cohort that received TBI (N = 44) from another that did not (N = 25). Subsequently, we interviewed the survivors from the TBI group with a minimum of 10 years of follow-up (N = 18), asking about the presence of side effects. Results: The overall survival (OS) at 2 and 5 years was 79.1% and 65.2% respectively for the TBI group and 66.2% and 55.8% for the non-TBI group, although this difference was not significant (P=.31). The event-free survival (EFS) at 2 and 5 years was 77.3% and 63.6% respectively for the TBI group and 56% and 32% for the non-TBI group (P=.02). The probability of relapse (PR) at 2 years for those who received TBI was 10% compared to 28.6% for those who did not receive TBI (P=.005). Survivors who received TBI developed secondary neoplasms (39%), dyslipidemia (67%), cognitive impairments affecting memory (44%), recurrent respiratory infections (39%), thyroid abnormalities (45%), premature ovarian failure (89%), cataracts (22%), and psychological problems (44%). However, the quality of life, as self-assessed by the patients, was considered good for 83% of the participants.. Conclusions: Patients who received TBI had significantly higher EFS and lower PR. However, adverse effects are frequent and significant, although they do not subjectively affect quality of life. Resumen: Introducción: La irradiación corporal total (ICT) forma parte del acondicionamiento mieloablativo del trasplante de progenitores hematopoyéticos (TPH) en hemopatías malignas. Esta terapia ha demostrado recientemente mayor supervivencia en leucemia linfoblástica aguda (LLA) frente a regímenes basados en quimioterapia. Sin embargo, los efectos secundarios son una limitación importante, especialmente en la población pediátrica. Pacientes y métodos: Analizamos retrospectivamente la supervivencia de pacientes con LLA que recibieron un TPH en un hospital terciario entre 1996 a 2009 (N = 69 TPH en 57 pacientes). Diferenciamos una cohorte que había recibido ICT (N = 44) y otra que no (N = 25). Posteriormente entrevistamos a los supervivientes del grupo ICT con un mínimo de 10 años de seguimiento (N = 18), preguntando acerca de la presencia de efectos secundarios. Resultados: La supervivencia global (SG) a los 2 y 5 años fue del 79.1% y 65.2% respectivamente para el grupo ICT y del 66.2% y 55.8% para el grupo no ICT, aunque esta diferencia no fue significativa (p = 0.31). La supervivencia libre de evento (SLE), a los 2 y 5 años fue del 77.3% y 63.6% respectivamente para el grupo ICT y del 56% y 32% para el grupo no ICT (p = 0.02). La probabilidad de recidiva (PR) a los 2 años habiendo recibido ICT fue del 10% y sin haber recibido ICT del 28.6% (p = 0.005). Los supervivientes que recibieron ICT desarrollaron neoplasias secundarias (39%), dislipemia (67%), alteraciones cognitivas (44%), infecciones respiratorias de repetición (39%), alteraciones tiroideas (45%), insuficiencia ovárica precoz (89%), cataratas (22%) y problemas psicológicos (44%), aunque la calidad de vida, valorada por ellos mismos, fue considerada como buena para el 83% de los encuestados. Conclusiones: Los pacientes que recibieron ICT tuvieron significativamente mayor SLE y menor PR. Sin embargo, los efectos adversos son frecuentes e importantes, aunque no afectan subjetivamente a la calidad de vida.

50. Soil organic and phytomass carbon stocks in mountain periglacial settings of Vindelfjällen (Sweden)

Abstract

We present a detailed soil organic carbon (SOC) and phytomass carbon (C) inventory for a mountain periglacial region in northwest Sweden (altitude range c. 600–1,800 m). We describe plant cover and soil profiles at thirty-nine sites representing the main land cover classes at and above tree line. The mean landscape-level SOC storage for full soil depth is 7.14 kg C m−2, which includes 35 percent of high-alpine ice/snow and bare ground surfaces with negligible SOC stocks. The main SOC hotspots are boreal (maximum stock of 118.5 kg C m−2) and alpine (maximum stock of 79.9 kg C m−2) wetlands. Solifluction lobes in the alpine belt hold above average but highly variable SOC stocks (2.11–19.5 kg C m−2). Permafrost was only encountered in small remnants of collapsing palsas, holding negligible SOC stocks. Mean phytomass C storage is 0.36 kg C m−2, with birch forest storing on average about twenty times more phytomass C (4.41 kg C m−2) compared to the mean for the upland alpine tundra classes (0.20 kg C m−2). Projected increases in ambient temperatures will likely result in an upward shift of the tree line and the alpine vegetation belt with a potential increase in phytomass C and SOC stocks.
