In a context of strong environmental pressure in which the construction sector has the greatestimpact, the reuse of the load-bearing elements is the most promising as it significantly avoidswaste production, preserves natural resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by cuttingdown on embodied energy.This thesis consequently covers three main areas of research:1. Improvement of structural design through expedient typologies by defining the DfReu(Design for Reuse) in order to anticipate the use of load-bearing elements (vertical andhorizontal), that can be dismantled and reused at the end of their service life to extendtheir lifespan, ultimately increasing the stock of available elements for reuse.2. Development of a methodology for the implementation of a reinforced and long-lastingtraceability centered on a materials bank with the use of BIM in order to secure all thecharacteristics, in particular physico-mechanical, of the load-bearing elements and tofacilitate the reuse processes as well as the commitment of a new responsibility for thereuse engineer.3. Identification of the key parameters influencing the environmental impacts of reuse anddevelopment of sensitivity study, allowing a better comprehension of the consequencesof this process and its consideration in design to support to decision making.An experiment based on reinforced concrete demonstration portals frames has enabledcorroboration of these three lines of research by generating missing data in literature. Thispractical analysis of column-beam assembly has generated technical data on the structuralbehavior after reuse, but also environmental data for implementation and deconstruction.This research offers subsequently a methodology based on a chain of tools to enable engineersto design reversible construction assemblies within a reusable structure, to secure the necessaryinformation in the BIM model coupled with physical traceability, to build a bank of materials andto enhance design through a stock of load-bearing elements. The study thus distinguishes"design with a stock" which aims to combine as many available elements as possible, from"design from a stock" which leads to the reuse of 100% of the elements and thus presents a newparadigm for the designer.At the same time, the environmental impacts of the reuse process are studied using a life cycleassessment (LCA). A sensitivity study, based among other things on the number of uses and thelifespan, in comparison to equivalent new constructions, provides a better understanding of theareas of interest of the DfReu. Consideration of criteria specific to the circular economy inbuildings completes the definition of reuse criteria. In the end, environmental studies establishunder which conditions reuse reduces the impact of a building and identify the key parameters.The results obtained are primarily intended for structural engineers but more broadly fordesigners part of the project management: architects, engineers and environmental designoffices, in order to offer and encourage the study of variants anticipating the reusability of newlydesigned buildings. By extension, the results can also be used in projects involving existingbuildings., Dans un contexte de pression environnementale intense où le secteur de la construction dans le monde a le plus grand impact sur plusieurs indicateurs, le réemploi des éléments porteurs est le plus prometteur pour éviter significativement la production de déchets, préserver les ressources naturelles et réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre par la diminution de l'énergie grise. Cette thèse porte donc sur trois principaux axes de recherches : 1. l’amélioration de la conception structurale par des typologies favorables en définissant le DfReu (Design for Reuse) afin d’anticiper la mise en œuvre d’éléments porteurs (verticaux et horizontaux) démontables et réemployables en fin de vie, d’allonger leur durée de vie, in fine en augmentant le stock d’éléments disponibles au réemploi 2. le développement d’une méthodologie pour la mise en place d’une traçabilité renforcée et pérenne autour d’une banque de matériaux et du BIM afin de disposer de toutes les caractéristiques, notamment physico-mécaniques, des éléments porteurs et de faciliter les processus de réemploi et l’engagement d’une nouvelle responsabilité pour l’ingénieur réemployeur 3. L’identification des paramètres clés influençant les impacts environnementaux propres au réemploi et le développement d’analyses de sensibilité, permettant une meilleure compréhension des conséquences de ce processus et de sa prise en compte lors de la conception, appuyant l’aide à la décision. Une expérimentation fondée sur des portiques démonstrateurs en béton armé a permis de corroborer ces trois axes en générant des données manquantes dans la littérature. Cette analyse pratique de l’assemblage poteau-poutre a produit des données techniques sur le comportement structural après réemploi, mais aussi des données environnementales de mise en œuvre et déconstruction. Ce travail propose alors une méthodologie fondée sur une chaîne d'outils pour permettre aux ingénieurs de concevoir des assemblages réversibles au sein d’une structure réemployable, de pérenniser les informations nécessaires dans la maquette BIM doublées d’une traçabilité physique, de mettre en place une banque de matériaux et d’optimiser la conception à partir d’un stock d’éléments porteurs. L’étude distingue ainsi la "conception avec un stock" qui vise à intégrer le plus grand nombre possible d'éléments disponibles, de la "conception à partir d'un stock" qui conduit au réemploi de 100% des éléments et propose ainsi un nouveau paradigme pour le concepteur. Parallèlement, les impacts environnementaux du processus de réemploi sont étudiés à partir d’une analyse du cycle de vie (ACV). Une analyse de sensibilité déclinant, entre autres, le nombre d’usages et la durée de vie, en comparaison de constructions neuves équivalentes, permet de mieux appréhender les domaines d'intérêt du DfReu. La prise en compte de critères spécifiques à l’économie circulaire dans le bâtiment complète la définition des critères de réemployabilité. L’étude environnementale montre finalement dans quelles conditions le réemploi diminue l’impact d’un bâtiment, et identifie les paramètres clés. Les résultats obtenus s’adressent en premier lieu aux ingénieurs structure mais plus largement aux concepteurs membres de la maîtrise d’œuvre : architectes, ingénieurs et bureaux d’études spécialisés en environnement, afin de proposer et d’inciter l’étude de variantes anticipant la réemployabilité des bâtiments nouvellement conçus. Les résultats sont, par extension, également exploitables dans les projets intervenant sur l’existant.

In 2016, the “Earth Overshoot Day” landed on the 8th August. This day represents the time of year from which human demand exceeds the earth's ability to regenerate its resources. The construction sector produces more than 70% of waste in France. Faced with this alarming observation, the methods of construction must become more virtuous. Wood, which is the only fully renewable building material, must regain a prominent place in the building industry. Its qualities, in particular, its lightness, will make it possible to propose solutions to urbanization problems by increasing heights. Its reduced weight will allow building implementation on more constrained sites. The speed of construction that wood can offer, can reduce noise and the carbon footprint. The BIM tool, already implemented within setec tpi, finds here its full usefulness with the prefabrication of wood. In France, the Wood Industries Plan, carried out by ADIVbois, envisages the construction of several high-rise wooden buildings (up to 15 storeys high). These demonstrators will have to give a new dynamic to the French wood industry and allow the development of engineered wood from local species. Similar initiatives have taken place in Canada and the USA. Some European countries such as the Scandinavian countries (14 storeys built in Norway) and Austria, have more favorable circumstances and highly competitive wood industries. France wants to catch up, thanks in particular to its currently under-exploited forest potential. Setec tpi has been appointed by ADIVbois to manage the Structures workshop of the technical commission. It has accumulated knowledge, and extended its expertise in high-rise buildings using wood material. A guide for the design of high-rise wooden buildings has been prepared for future designers. The various studies and case studies have highlighted critical points to initiate research. The notions of damping, creep, stiffness of connections will have to be mastered in order to reach new height records

Que ce soit en tant que citoyen ou en tant que professionnel du bâtiment nous sommes de plus en plus concernés par notre impact environnemental. De plus, l’activité de la construction et du bâtiment est la principale émettrice de GES et consommatrice de matière . Le travail de recherche présenté répond aux problématiques d’économie circulaire . Le gros œuvre et les fondations représentent la majorité de l’énergie grise d’un bâtiment . L’effort de recherche est donc concentré sur les éléments structurels et l’établissement des conditions pour leur réemploi . Le réemploi est ici défini comme la réutilisation d’un élément sans transformation, contrairement au recyclage qui induit un nouveau cycle industriel de transformation de la matière. Il s’agit donc de réduire la consommation de matériaux et d’abaisser les émissions de GES (à la fois en termes industriels mais aussi en termes de mise en œuvre) La méthodologie décrite vise à concevoir les éléments de structure en augmentant les paramètres BIM (6D , ACV), à attacher les informations mécaniques, de durabilité du matériau, de vieillissement, à chaque objet du modèle numérique. Une traçabilité numérique et physique (puces RFID dans la matière) permet de suivre l’évolution de l’élément au cours des années et d’alimenter une base de données en parallèle. En fin de vie la base de données est accessible et consultable pour la conception d’un futur bâtiment. Un développement d’outils et de passerelles permettra alors, depuis un modèle de calcul, d’aller interroger la base de données pour trouver un élément issu de la déconstruction qu’on pourra réutiliser dans la future construction. L’enjeu de ce travail est bien de garantir que l’élément de la base de données possède bien toutes les caractéristiques pour répondre à sa nouvelle fonction structurelle.

The research work presented aims at setting up an infinite cycle of use of materials by their reuse and answering in particular to the problems of circular economy. Structural work and foundations represent the majority of the embodied energy of a building. The research effort is therefore focused on the structural elements.Reuse is here defined as the reuse of an element without transformation, unlike recycling which induces a new industrial cycle of transformation of matter. It is therefore about reducing the consumption of materials and lowering GHG emissions. Reuse is not sufficiently taken into account in environmental assessments and requires new indicators in LCA methodologies. Several considerations are needed to evaluate reuse including: (1) calling the lifespan of buildings fixed at 50 years for the life cycle into question, in order to take into account the different cycles; (2) distinguish the LCA of the building from that of the products; (3) adapt D module from EN 15804 to the very new and not yet professional sector of reuse; (4) new allocation system for both initial deconstructed building and reconstructed second building to benefit from the positive impacts of reuse; (5) integrate the several possible scenarios of second lives for an initial product (same function / downgrading / redirecting, need to be evaluated differently). The missing data identified have to be generated by the relevant stakeholders.In order to reuse these elements to the fullest of their initial capacity, it is important to transfer the necessary characteristics to the future “reuse designer”. The design for rebuild methodology we are implementing aims to design the structural elements by increasing the BIM parameters (6D, LCA), to attach the environmental impact, the mechanical information, material durability, ageing to each object of the digital mock-up. We envisioned to install digital and physical traceability (like RFID chips in the material) that makes it possible to follow the evolution of the element over the years and to feed a database in parallel. At the end of its life the database is accessible and searchable for the design of a future building. A development of tools and gateways will then allow from a model of calculation to go to query the database. The objective is to find an element resulting from the deconstruction that can be reused in the future construction. The challenge of this work is to ensure that the element of the database has all the characteristics to meet its new structural function. Next step is to implement the presented methodology on experimentations.

The architect must take on his responsibility in this process. In order to react to this situation, the environmental priorities must take precedence over economic priorities. The disassembly capability and the deconstruction will become critical issues in the more or less short term. Our duty as architects is to preempt the depletion of resources and begin to act now. Through the proposal of re-employment developed in this report, a number of provisions are highlighted and can be applied by any designer. It integrates the ability to disassemble the buildings, by allowing both adaptability, and also their future dismantling in order to recover materials and reuse them in new projects. The introduction of reversible assemblies that do not damage the material or its features, must be integrated as of today. Regulatory aspects and controls are also discussed to make concrete proposals. We must be aware of the material we use today and which will be left to future generations. We must also raise the question of the future of complex materials from which we cannot separate the different components, and which will be permanently lost. Reuse combines both convictions and design process. Currently, it requires a lot of manpower in particular to replace the demolition system with that of deconstruction. But at a time when unemployment strikes our society, it could be a way to create jobs locally. Pour agir, les priorités environnementales doivent prendre le pas sur les priorités économiques. La démontabilité et la déconstruction vont devenir des enjeux cruciaux à plus ou moins court terme. Notre devoir d’architecte est d’anticiper cet épuisement des ressources et de commencer à agir maintenant. à travers la proposition de réemploi développée dans ce mémoire, un certain nombre de dispositions sont mises en exergue et peuvent être appliquées par tout concepteur. Il s’agit d’intégrer la possibilité de démonter les ouvrages, à la fois pour en permettre l’adaptabilité, mais aussi leur futur démantèlement afin de récupérer les matériaux et les réutiliser dans de nouveaux projets. La mise en place d’assemblages réversibles, qui n’abîment pas la matière ni ses caractéristiques, doit être intégrée dès aujourd’hui. Nous devons être conscients de la matière que nous utilisons aujourd’hui et qui sera laissée aux générations futures. Il faut se poser la question du devenir des matériaux complexes dont on ne pourra pas séparer les différents composants et qui seront définitivement perdus. Le réemploi réunit à la fois des convictions et des processus de conception. Actuellement, il demande beaucoup de main d’œuvre notamment pour passer du système de démolition à la déconstruction. Mais à l’heure où le chômage frappe notre société, ce peut être un moyen de créer des emplois locaux. Ce travail n’est pas un plaidoyer en faveur du réemploi mais une proposition concrète, applicable immédiatement pour prévenir l’imminent épuisement des ressources.

Nous devons être conscients de la matière que nous utilisons aujourd’hui et qui sera laissée aux générations futures. Il faut se poser la question du devenir des matériaux complexes dont on ne pourra pas séparer les différents composants et qui seront définitivement perdus. Le réemploi réunit à la fois des convictions et des processus de conception. Actuellement, il demande beaucoup de main d’œuvre notamment pour passer du système de démolition à la déconstruction. Mais à l’heure où le chômage frappe notre société, ce peut être un moyen de créer des emplois locaux. Ce travail n’est pas un plaidoyer en faveur du réemploi mais une proposition concrète, applicable immédiatement pour prévenir l’imminent épuisement des ressources.
