Search

In the past five years, six quasi-periodic X-ray eruption (QPE) sources have been discovered in the nuclei of nearby galaxies. Their origin remains an open question. We present MUSE integral field spectroscopy of five QPE host galaxies to characterize their properties. We find that 3/5 galaxies host extended emission line regions (EELRs) up to 10 kpc in size. The EELRs are photo-ionized by a non-stellar continuum, but the current nuclear luminosity is insufficient to power the observed emission lines. The EELRs are decoupled from the stars both kinematically and in projected sky position, and the low velocities and velocity dispersions ($<$ 100 km s$^{-1}$ and $\lesssim 75$ km s$^{-1}$ respectively) are inconsistent with being AGN- or shock-driven. The origin of the EELRs is likely a previous phase of nuclear activity. The QPE host galaxy properties are strikingly similar to those of tidal disruption events (Wevers et al. submitted). The preference for a very short-lived (the typical EELR lifetime is $\sim$15000 years), gas-rich phase where the nucleus has recently faded significantly suggests that TDEs and QPEs may share a common formation channel, disfavoring AGN accretion disk instabilities as the origin of QPEs. In the assumption that QPEs are related to extreme mass ratio inspiral systems (EMRIs; stellar-mass objects on bound orbits about massive black holes), the high incidence of EELRs and recently faded nuclear activity can be used to aid in the localization of the host galaxies of EMRIs discovered by low frequency gravitational wave observatories., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters. The term 'active galactic nuclei' (AGN) subtends a huge variety of objects, classified on their properties at different wavelengths. Peaked sources (PS) represent a class of AGN at the first stage of evolution, characterised by a peaked radio spectrum. Among these radio sources, low-luminosity compact (LLC) sources can be identified as PS accreting with a high Eddington rate, harbouring low-power jets and hosting low-mass black holes. These properties are also shared by narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). In 2016, LLCs were hypothesised to be the parent population of NLS1s with a flat radio spectrum (F-NLS1s), suggesting the former to be the same objects as the latter, seen at higher inclination. Based on radio luminosity functions and optical spectra analysis, 10 LLCs were identified as valid candidates for F-NLS1s. To account for the missing puzzle piece, verifying if these LLCs could be hosted in late-type galaxies as NLS1s, we performed the photometric decomposition of their Pan-STARRS1 images in all five filters. We used the 2D fitting algorithm GALFIT for the single-band analysis, and its extension GALFITM for the multi-band analysis. Considering that the morphological type and the structural parameters of the host can be dependent on the wavelength, we found six out of ten LLCs hosted in late-type galaxies, probably with pseudo-bulges, three point-like sources and one object of uncertain classification. Although this study is based on a small sample, it represents the first morphological analysis of LLC host galaxies. Variability studies of active galactic nuclei are a powerful diagnostic tool in understanding the physical processes occurring in disk-jet regions, unresolved by direct imaging with currently available techniques. Here, we report the first attempt to systematically characterize intra-night optical variability (INOV) for a sample of seven apparently radio-quiet narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RQNLSy1s) that had shown recurring flaring at 37 GHz in the radio observations at Metsahovi Radio Observatory (MRO), indicating the presence of relativistic jets in them, but no evidence for relativistic jets in the recent radio observations of Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 1.6, 5.2, and 9.0 GHz. We have conducted a total of 28 intra-night sessions, each lasting $\geq$ 3 hrs for this sample, resulting in an INOV duty cycle ($\overline{DC} ~\sim$20%) similar to that reported for $\gamma$-ray-NLSy1s (DC $\sim$25% - 30%), that display blazar-like INOV. This in turn infers the presence of relativistic jet in our sample sources. Thus, it appears that even lower-mass (M$_{BH} \sim$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$) RQNLSy1 galaxies can maintain blazar-like activities. We report on the discovery of one of the most extreme cases of high-frequency radio variability ever measured in active galactic nuclei (AGN), observed on timescales of days and exhibiting variability amplitudes of three to four orders of magnitude. These sources, all radio-weak narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, were discovered some years ago at Aalto University Mets\"ahovi Radio Observatory (MRO) based on recurring flaring at 37 GHz, strongly indicating the presence of relativistic jets. In subsequent observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 1.6, 5.2, and 9.0~GHz no signs of jets were seen. To determine the cause of their extraordinary behaviour, we observed them with the JVLA at 10, 15, 22, 33, and 45 GHz, and with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 15 GHz. These observations were complemented with single-dish monitoring at 37 GHz at MRO, and at 15 GHz at Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). Intriguingly, all but one source either have a steep radio spectrum up to 45 GHz, or were not detected at all. Based on the 37 GHz data the timescales of the radio flares are a few days, and the derived variability brightness temperatures and variability Doppler factors comparable to those seen in blazars. We discuss alternative explanations for their extreme behaviour, but so far no definite conclusions can be made. These sources exhibit radio variability at a level rarely, if ever, seen in AGN. We studied seven nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies in $J$- and $Ks$-bands with redshifts varying from 0.019 to 0.092. This is the first multi-source study targeting the hosts of southern NLS1 galaxies. Our data was obtained with the FourStar instrument of the 6.5~m Magellan Baade telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory (Chile). The aim of our study is to determine the host galaxy morphologies of these sources by using GALFIT. We were able to model six out of the seven sources reliably. Our conclusion is that all of the reliably modelled sources are disk-like galaxies, either spirals or lenticulars. None of these sources present elliptical morphology. Our findings are in agreement with the hypothesis that disk-like galaxies are the main host of jetted NLS1 galaxies. Taking advantage of observations in two bands, we also produced a $J - Ks$ colour map of each source. Five of the six colour maps show significant dust extinction near the core of the galaxy -- a feature often seen in gamma-ray-detected jetted NLS1 galaxies, and interpreted to be a consequence of a past minor merger.

IGR J17407-2808 is an enigmatic and poorly studied X-ray binary that was recently observed quasi-simultaneously with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton. In this paper we report the results of this observational campaign. During the first 60 ks of observation, the source was caught in a relatively low emission state, characterised by a modest variability and an average flux of ~8.3E-13 erg/cm^2/s (4-60 keV). Afterwards, IGR J17407-2808 entered a significantly more active emission state that persisted for the remaining ~40 ks of the NuSTAR observation. During this state, IGR J17407-2808 displayed several fast X-ray flares, featuring durations of ~1-100 s and profiles with either single or multiple peaks. The source flux in the flaring state reached values as high as 2E-9 erg/cm^2/s (4-60 keV), leading to a measured dynamic range during the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton campaign of >~ 10^3. We also analysed available archival photometric near-infrared data of IGR J17407-2808 to improve the constraints available so far on the the nature of the donor star hosted in this system. Our analysis shows that the donor star can be either a rare K or M-type sub-subgiant or an K type main sequence star, or sub-giant star. Our findings support the classification of IGR J17407-2808 as a low-mass X-ray binary. PKS 2004-447 is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) harbouring a relativistic jet with gamma-ray emission. On 2019-10-25, the Fermi-Large Area Telescope captured a $\gamma$-ray flare from this source, offering a chance to study the broad-line region (BLR) and jet during such violent events. This can provide insights to the BLR structure and jet interactions, which are important for active galactic nuclei and host galaxy coevolution. We report X-Shooter observations of enhancements in the broad line components of Balmer, Paschen and He I lines seen only during the post-flare and vanishing 1.5 years after. These features are biased redward up to $\sim$250 km s$^{-1}$ and are narrower than the pre-existing broad line profiles. This indicates a connection between the relativistic jet and the BLR of a young AGN, and how $\gamma$-ray production can lead to localised addition of broad emission lines., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, including appendix. We report on the first multi-wavelength Swift monitoring campaign performed on SDSS J164100.10+345452.7, a nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy formerly known as radio quiet which was recently detected both in the radio (at 37 GHz) and in the $\gamma$-rays, which hints at the presence of a relativistic jet. During our 20-month Swift campaign, while pursuing the primary goal of assessing the baseline optical/UV and X-ray properties of J1641, we caught two radio flaring episodes, one each year. Our strictly simultaneous multi-wavelength data closely match the radio flare and allow us to unambiguously link the jetted radio emission of J1641. Indeed, for the X-ray spectra preceding and following the radio flare a simple absorbed power-law model is not an adequate description, and an extra absorption component is required. The average spectrum of J1641 can be best described by an absorbed power law model with a photon index $\Gamma=1.93\pm0.12$, modified by a partially covering neutral absorber with a covering fraction $f=0.91_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$. On the contrary, the X-ray spectrum closest to the radio flare does not require such extra absorber and is much harder ($\Gamma_{\rm flare} \sim 0.7\pm0.4$), thus implying the emergence of a further, harder spectral component. We interpret this as the jet emission emerging from a gap in the absorber. The fractional variability we derive in the optical/UV and X-ray bands are found to be lower than the typical values reported in the literature, since our observations of J1641 are dominated by the source being in a low state. Under the assumption that the origin of the 37 GHz radio flare is the emergence of a jet from an obscuring screen also observed in the X-rays, the derived total jet power is $P^{\rm tot}_{\rm jet}=3.5\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, comparable to the lowest measured in the literature. Based on our dedicated Swift monitoring program, MOMO, OJ 287 is one of the best-monitored blazars in the X-ray--UV--optical regime. Here, we report results from our accompanying, dense, multi-frequency (1.4--44 GHz) radio monitoring of OJ 287 between 2015 and 2022 covering a broad range of activity states. Fermi gamma-ray observations are added. We characterize the radio flux and spectral variability in detail, including DCF and other variability analyses, and discuss its connection with the multiwavelength emission. Deep fades of radio and optical--UV fluxes are found to occur every 1--2 years. Further, it is shown that a precursor flare of thermal bremsstrahlung predicted by one of the binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) models of OJ 287 was absent. We then focus on the nature of the extraordinary, nonthermal 2016/2017 outburst that we initially discovered with Swift. We interpret it as the latest of the famous optical double-peaked outbursts of OJ 287, favoring binary scenarios that do not require a highly precessing secondary SMBH., Comment: ApJ, in press. The project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modelling of OJ 287) was set up to test predictions of binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) scenarios and to understand disk-jet physics of the blazar OJ 287. After a correction, the precessing binary (PB) SMBH model predicted the next main outburst of OJ 287 in 2022 October, no longer in July, making the outburst well observable and the model testable. We have densely covered this period in our ongoing multi-frequency radio, optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring. The predicted outburst was not detected. Instead, OJ 287 was at low optical-UV emission levels, declining further into November. The predicted thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum was not observed either, at any epoch. Further, applying scaling relations, we estimate a SMBH mass of OJ 287 of 10^8 M_sun. The latest in a sequence of deep low-states that recur every 1-2 yrs is used to determine an upper limit on the Eddington ratio and on the accretion-disk luminosity. This limit is at least a factor of 10 lower than required by the PB model with its massive primary SMBH of >10^{10} M_sun. All these results favor alternative binary SMBH models of OJ 287 that neither require strong orbital precession nor a very large mass of the primary SMBH., Comment: MNRAS Letter, in press

Supermassive black holes have been known to disrupt passing stars producing outbursts called Tidal Disruption Events offering a unique view on the early stages of accretion disk and jet formation. The advent of large scale optical time-domain surveys has significantly increased the number of known events and challenged our understanding of their dynamics and emission processes. Here, we present the linear polarization curve of the most polarized tidal disruption without any indication of contribution from a jet to the emission. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a peculiar subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). They have demonstrated that the presence of relativistic jets in an AGN is not strictly related to its radio-loudness, the black hole mass, or the host galaxy type. Here we present a remarkable example of a radio-quiet NLS1, 6dFGS gJ035432.8-134008 (J0354-1340). In our Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations at 5.5 GHz the source shows a bright core with a flat spectral index, and extended emission corresponding to very elongated jets. These are the largest double-sided radio jets found to date in an NLS1, with a deprojected linear size of almost 250 kpc. We also analysed near-infrared and optical images obtained by the Magellan Baade and the European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope. By means of photometric decomposition and colour maps, we determined that J0354-1340 is hosted by a spiral/disk galaxy. Fully evolved relativistic jets have traditionally been associated with high-mass elliptical galaxies hosting the most massive black holes, but our results confirm that also less massive black holes in spiral galaxies can launch and sustain powerful jets, implying that the launching of the jets is governed by factors other than previously believed., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We are compiling a new list of gamma-ray jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN), starting from the fourth catalog of point sources of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Our aim is to prepare a list of jetted AGN with known redshifts and classifications to be used to calibrate jet power. We searched in the available literature for all the published optical spectra and multiwavelength studies useful to characterize the sources. We found new, missed, or even forgotten information leading to a substantial change in the redshift values and classification of many sources. We present here the preliminary results of this analysis and some statistics based on the gamma-ray sources with right ascension within the interval $0^{\rm h}-12^{\rm h}$ (J2000). Although flat-spectrum radio quasars and BL Lac objects are still the dominant populations, there is a significant increase in the number of other objects, such as misaligned AGN, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and Seyfert galaxies. We present spectroscopy and photometry of SN 2018zd, a Type IIP core-collapse supernova with signatures of interaction with circumstantial material in its earliest spectra. High ionization lines, the earmark of shock breakout, are not seen in the earliest spectral epoch, and are only seen in a single spectrum at 4.9 d after explosion. The strength and brevity of these features imply a confined circumstellar material shell in the immediate vicinity of the progenitor. Once the narrow emission lines disappear, SN 2018zd evolves similarly to a Type IIP SN, although the blue colour and enhanced plateau magnitude of SN 2018zd suggests an additional source of luminosity throughout the plateau phase. While SN 2018zd has previously been proposed as an electron-capture SN, we suggest that it is an Fe core-collapse from a low mass red supergiant progenitor. Differences in interpretation for SN 2018zd arise in part due to the large uncertainty on the distance to the host-galaxy NGC 2146, which we re-derive here to be $15.6^{+6.1}_{-3.0}$ Mpc. We find the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass for SN 2018zd to be 0.017 M$_{\odot}$, significantly higher than models of ECSNe predict. We also find the Ni/Fe ratio in SN 2018zd to be much lower that would be expected for an ECSN.

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, shows gamma-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike other gamma-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. In conclusion, we confirm that PKS 2004-447 is one of the rare examples of gamma-ray emitting CSS/NLS1s hybrid, and that these two classes of objects are likely connected in the framework of AGN evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, resubmitted to A&A after minor comments from the referee

The classification of the optical spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) into different types is well founded on AGN physics, but it involves some degree of human oversight and cannot be reliably scaled to large data sets. Machine learning (ML) tackles such a classification problem in a fast and reproducible way, but is often perceived as a black box. However, ML interpretability and explainability are active research areas in computer science, increasingly providing us with tools to alleviate this issue. We applied ML interpretability tools to a classifier trained to predict AGN type from spectra, to demonstrate the use of such tools in this context. We trained a support-vector machine on 3346 high-quality, low redshift AGN spectra from SDSS DR15 with an existing reliable classification as type 1, type 2, or intermediate type. On a selection of test-set spectra, we computed the gradient of the predicted class probability and we built saliency maps. We also visualized the high-dimensional space of AGN spectra using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), showing where the spectra for which we computed a saliency map are located. Regions that affect the predicted AGN type often coincide with physically relevant features, such as spectral lines. t-SNE visualization shows good separability of type 1 and type 2 spectra, while intermediate-type spectra either lie in-between as expected or appear mixed with type 2 spectra. Saliency maps show why a given AGN type was predicted by our classifier, resulting in a physical interpretation in terms of regions of the spectrum that affected its decision, making it no longer a black box. These regions coincide with those used by human experts such as relevant spectral lines, and are even used in a similar way, with the classifier e.g. effectively measuring the width of a line by weighing its center and its tails oppositely., Comment: Under review by A&A

We present the discovery and follow-up observations of two CCSNe that occurred in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG), NGC3256. The first, SN2018ec, was discovered using the ESO HAWK-I/GRAAL adaptive optics seeing enhancer, and was classified as a Type Ic with a host galaxy extinction of $A_V=2.1^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ mag. The second, AT2018cux, was discovered during the course of follow-up observations of SN2018ec, and is consistent with a sub-luminous Type IIP classification with an $A_V=2.1 \pm 0.4$ mag of host extinction. A third CCSN, PSNJ10275082-4354034 in NGC3256, has previously been reported in 2014, and we recovered the source in late time archival HST imaging. Based on template light-curve fitting, we favour a Type IIn classification for it with modest host galaxy extinction of $A_V=0.3^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ mag. We also extend our study with follow-up data of the recent Type IIb SN2019lqo and Type Ib SN2020fkb that occurred in the LIRG system Arp299 with host extinctions of $A_V=2.1^{+0.1}_{-0.3}$ and $A_V=0.4^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$ mag, respectively. Motivated by the above, we inspected, for the first time, a sample of 29 CCSNe located within a projected distance of 2.5 kpc from the host galaxy nuclei in a sample of 16 LIRGs. We find that, if star formation within these galaxies is modelled assuming a global starburst episode and normal IMF, there is evidence of a correlation between the starburst age and the CCSN subtype. We infer that the two subgroups of 14 H-poor (Type IIb/Ib/Ic/Ibn) and 15 H-rich (Type II/IIn) CCSNe have different underlying progenitor age distributions, with the H-poor progenitors being younger at 3$\sigma$ significance. However, we do note that the available sample sizes of CCSNe and host LIRGs are so far small, and the statistical comparisons between subgroups do not take into account possible systematic or model errors related to the estimated starburst ages. Context. QSO B1420+326 is a blazar classified as a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ). In the beginning of 2020 it underwent an enhanced flux state. An extensive multiwavelength campaign allowed us to trace the evolution of the flare. Aims. We search for VHE gamma-ray emission from QSO B1420+326 during this flaring state. We aim to characterize and model the broadband emission of the source over different phases of the flare. Methods. The source was observed with a number of instruments in radio, near infrared, optical (including polarimetry and spectroscopy), ultra-violet, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. We use dedicated optical spectroscopy results to estimate the accretion disk and the dust torus luminosity. We perform spectral energy distribution modeling in the framework of combined Synchrotron-Self-Compton and External Compton scenario in which the electron energy distribution is partially determined from acceleration and cooling processes. Results. During the enhanced state the flux of both SED components drastically increased and the peaks were shifted to higher energies. Follow up observations with the MAGIC telescopes led to the detection of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from this source, making it one of only a handful of FSRQs known in this energy range. Modeling allows us to constrain the evolution of the magnetic field and electron energy distribution in the emission region. The gamma-ray flare was accompanied by a rotation of the optical polarization vector during a low polarization state. Also, a new, superluminal radio knot contemporaneously appeared in the radio image of the jet. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. In this paper, we present the analysis of new radio and optical observations of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 783. 1.6 GHz observations performed with the e-MERLIN interferometer confirm the presence of the diffuse emission previously observed. The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) also detects the nuclear source both at 1.6 GHz (L-Band) and 5 GHz (C-band). While the L-band image shows only an unresolved core, the C-band image shows the presence of a partially resolved structure, at a position angle of 60{\deg}. The brightness temperature of the emission in both bands ($>10^6$ K) suggests that it is a pc-scale jet produced by the AGN. The relatively steep VLBA spectral index ($\alpha_{VLBA} = 0.63\pm0.03$) is consistent with the presence of optically thin emission on milliarcsecond scales. Multi-wavelength monitoring of Mrk 335 with Swift between 2007-2019 are used to construct annual spectral energy distributions and track year-to-year changes. Non-contemporaneous archival data prior to 2007 are used to build a bright state SED. In this work, the changes are examined and quantified to build the foundation for future SED modelling. The yearly SEDs trace a downward trend on the average, with the X-ray portion varying significantly and acquiring further lower values in the past two years when compared to the optical/UV portion of SED. The bolometric Eddington ratios derived using optical/UV to X-ray SEDs and the calculated X-ray luminosities show a gradual decrease over the monitoring period. Changes in the parameters over time are examined. Principal component analysis suggests that the primary variability is in the X-ray properties of Mrk 335. When looking at the broader picture of Mrk 335 and its behaviour, the X-rays, accounting most of the variability in the 13-year data, are possibly driven by physical processes related to the corona or absorption whereas the modest optical-UV variations suggest their origin within the accretion disc. These results are consistent with the previous interpretation of Mrk 335 using the timing analyses on the monitoring data and spectral modelling of deep observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. In this paper, we discuss the outcomes of the follow-up campaign of SN 2018ijp, discovered as part of the Zwicky Transient Facility survey for optical transients. Its first spectrum shows similarities to broad-lined Type Ic supernovae around maximum light, whereas later spectra display strong signatures of interaction between rapidly expanding ejecta and a dense H-rich circumstellar medium, coinciding with a second peak in the photometric evolution of the transient. This evolution, along with the results of modeling of the first light curve peak, suggests a scenario where a stripped star exploded within a dense circumstellar medium. The two main phases in the evolution of the transient could be interpreted as a first phase dominated by radioactive decays, and an later interaction-dominated phase where the ejecta collide with a pre-existing shell. We present results of temporal and spectral analyses on four XMM-Newton EPIC pn observations of IRAS 17020+4544, a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy with evidence of a radio jet. Analysis of the light curves reveals that this radio-loud source does not behave like the bulk population of its radio-quiet counterparts. A trend of spectral hardening with increased flux is found. Variability is found to increase with energy, though it decreases as the spectrum hardens. The first 40 ks of the most recent observation behave uniquely among the epochs, exhibiting a softer spectral state than at any other time. Possible non-stationarity at low energies is found, with no such effect present at higher energies, suggesting at least two distinct spectral components. A reverberation signature is confirmed, with the lag-frequency, lag-energy, and covariance spectra changing significantly during the soft-state epoch. The temporal analysis suggests a variable power-law in the presence of a reflection component, thus motivating such a fit for the 0.3-10 keV EPIC pn spectra from all epochs. We find an acceptable spectral fit using the timing-motivated parameters and report the detection of a broad Fe K emission line, requiring an additional model component beyond the reflection spectrum. We discuss links between this source and other narrow-line Seyfert 1 sources that show evidence of jet activity, finding similarities among this currently very limited sample of interesting objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages, 14 figures

We present the results of new radio observations carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array C-configuration at 5.5 GHz for a sample of southern narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). This work increases the number of known radio-detected NLS1s in the southern hemisphere, and confirms that the radio emission of NLS1s is mainly concentrated in a central region at kpc-scale and only a few sources show diffuse emission. In radio-quiet NLS1s, the radio luminosity tends to be higher in steep-spectrum sources and be lower in flat-spectrum sources, which is opposite to radio-loud NLS1s. This may be because the radio emission of steep NLS1s is dominated by misaligned jets, AGN-driven outflows, or star formation superposing on a compact core. Instead the radio emission of flat NLS1s may be produced by a central core which has not yet developed radio jets and outflows. We discover new NLS1s harboring kpc-scale radio jets and confirm that a powerful jet does not require a large-mass black hole to be generated. We also find sources dominated by star formation. We present the discovery with Keck of the extremely infrared (IR) luminous transient AT 2017gbl, coincident with the Northern nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) IRAS 23436+5257. Our extensive multi-wavelength follow-up spans ~900 days, including photometry and spectroscopy in the optical and IR, and (very long baseline interferometry) radio and X-ray observations. Radiative transfer modelling of the host galaxy spectral energy distribution and long-term pre-outburst variability in the mid-IR indicate the presence of a hitherto undetected dust obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). The optical and near-IR spectra show broad 2000 km/s hydrogen, He I and O I emission features that decrease in flux over time. Radio imaging shows a fast evolving compact source of synchrotron emission spatially coincident with AT 2017gbl. We infer a lower limit for the radiated energy of 7.3 x 10^50 erg from the IR photometry. An extremely energetic supernova would satisfy this budget, but is ruled out by the radio counterpart evolution. Instead, we propose AT 2017gbl is related to an accretion event by the central supermassive black hole, where the spectral signatures originate in the AGN broad line region and the IR photometry is consistent with re-radiation by polar dust. Given the fast evolution of AT 2017gbl, we deem a tidal disruption event (TDE) of a star a more plausible scenario than a dramatic change in the AGN accretion rate. This makes AT 2017gbl the third TDE candidate to be hosted by a LIRG, in contrast to the so far considered TDE population discovered at optical wavelengths and hosted preferably by post-starburst galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS. 32 pages, 22 figures

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are peculiar active galactic nuclei (AGN). Most of them do not show strong radio emission, but recently seven radio-quiet (or -silent) NLS1s have been detected flaring multiple times at 37 GHz by the Mets\"ahovi Radio Telescope, indicating the presence of relativistic jets in these peculiar sources. We observed them with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in A configuration at 1.6, 5.2, and 9.0 GHz. Our results show that these sources are either extremely faint or not detected in the JVLA bands. At those frequencies, the radio emission from their relativistic jet must be absorbed, either via synchrotron self-absorption as it occurs in gigahertz-peaked sources or, more likely, via free-free absorption by a screen of ionized gas associated with starburst activity or shocks. Our findings cast new shadows on the radio-loudness criterion, which seems to be more and more frequently a misleading parameter. The REX (Radio-Emitting X-ray sources) is a catalogue produced by cross-matching X-ray data from the ROSAT-PSPC archive of pointed observations and radio data from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, aimed at the selection of blazars. From the REX catalogue, we select a well defined and statistically complete sample of high-energy peaked BL Lac (HBL). HBL are expected to be the most numerous class of extragalactic TeV emitting sources. Specifically, we have considered only the REX sources in the currently planned CTA extragalactic survey area satisfying specific criteria and with an optical spectroscopic confirmation. We obtain 46 HBL candidates that we called Te-REX (TeV-emitting REX). We estimate the very high-energy gamma-ray emission, in the TeV domain, using an empirical approach i.e. using specific statistical relations between gamma-rays (at GeV energies) and radio/X-rays properties observed in bright HBL from the literature. We compare the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with the sensitivities of current and upcoming Cherenkov telescopes and we predict that 14 Te-REX could be detectable with 50 hours of observations of CTA and 7 of them also with current Cherenkov facilities in 50 hours. By extrapolating these numbers on the total extragalactic sky, we predict that about 800 HBL could be visible in pointed CTA observations and about 400 with current Cherenkov telescopes in 50 hours. Interestingly, our predictions show that a non-negligible fraction (about 30%) of the HBL that will be detectable by CTA is composed of relatively weak objects whose optical nuclear emission is swamped by the host-galaxy light and not (yet) detected by Fermi-LAT., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

There are several methods to calculate the radiative and kinetic power of relativistic jets, but their results can differ by one or two orders of magnitude. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a calibration of the jet power, to understand the reasons for these differences (whether wrong hypotheses or intrinsic source variability), and if it is possible to converge to a reliable measurement of this physical quantity. We present preliminary results of a project aimed at calibrating the power of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and X-ray binaries (XRB). We started by selecting all the AGN associations with known redshift in the Fourth Fermi LAT Gamma-Ray Catalog (4FGL). We then calculated the radiative and/or kinetic powers from available data or we extracted this information from literature. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is one of the few classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) harboring powerful relativistic jets and detected in $\gamma$ rays. NLS1s are well-known X-ray sources. While in non-jetted sources the origin of this X-ray emission may be a hot corona surrounding the accretion disk, in jetted objects, especially beamed ones, the contribution of corona and relativistic jet is difficult to disentangle without a proper sampling of the hard X-ray emission. For this reason, we observed with \textit{NuSTAR} the first four NLS1s detected at high energy $\gamma$ rays. These data, along with \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{Swift/XRT} observations, confirmed that X rays originate both in the jet and in the accretion disk corona. Time variability in hard X rays furthermore suggests that, as observed in flat-spectrum radio quasars, the dissipation region during flares could change its position from source to source, and it can be located both inside and outside the broad-line region. We find that jetted NLS1s, and other blazars as well, seem not to follow the classical fundamental plane of black hole activity, which therefore should be used as a black hole mass estimator in blazars with extreme care only. We present a detailed study of 11 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) that both have optical and X-ray spectroscopic observations. There are five complex NLS1s (C-NLS1s) and six simple NLS1s (S-NLS1s). We propose a possible correlation between [O III] line asymmetry and X-ray complexity. The outflow or wind from the inner accretion disk is commonly present in NLS1s and mostly directed along the system axis. In C-NLS1s only weak wind effects are measured, the X-ray spectral complexity might be caused by the presence of ionized material in the wind. On the contrary, the wind in S-NLS1s is fast, the ionized material could be swept by such a strong wind, thus the complex feature is missing which results in a simple X-ray spectrum. Furthermore, this outflow scenario seems to be an inclination effect. Line profiles can provide fundamental information on the physics of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In the case of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) this is of particular importance since past studies revealed how their permitted line profiles are well reproduced by a Lorentzian function instead of a Gaussian. This has been explained with different properties of the broad-line region (BLR), which may present a more pronounced turbulent motions in NLS1s with respect to other AGN. We investigated the line profiles in a recent large NLS1 sample classified using SDSS, and we divided the sources into two subsamples according to their line shapes, Gaussian or Lorentzian. The line profiles clearly separate all the properties of NLS1s. Black hole mass, Eddington ratio, [O III], and Fe II strength are all very different in the Lorentzian and Gaussian samples. We interpret this in terms of evolution within the class of NLS1s. The Lorentzian sources may be the youngest objects, while Gaussian profiles may be typically associated to more evolved objects. We present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the intermediate-luminosity optical transient AT 2017jfs. At peak, the object reaches an absolute magnitude of Mg=-15.46+-0.15 mag and a bolometric luminosity of 5.5x10^41 erg/s. Its light curve has the double-peak shape typical of Luminous Red Novae (LRNe), with a narrow first peak bright in the blue bands, while the second peak is longer lasting and more luminous in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. During the first peak, the spectrum shows a blue continuum with narrow emission lines of H and Fe II. During the second peak, the spectrum becomes cooler, resembling that of a K-type star, and the emission lines are replaced by a forest of narrow lines in absorption. About 5 months later, while the optical light curves are characterized by a fast linear decline, the NIR ones show a moderate rebrightening, observed until the transient disappeared in solar conjunction. At these late epochs, the spectrum becomes reminiscent of that of M-type stars, with prominent molecular absorption bands. The late-time properties suggest the formation of some dust in the expanding common envelope or an IR echo from foreground pre-existing dust. We propose that the object is a common-envelope transient, possibly the outcome of a merging event in a massive binary, similar to NGC4490-2011OT1., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 Tables (incl. one on-line). We present extensive datasets for a class of intermediate-luminosity optical transients known as "luminous red novae" (LRNe). They show double-peaked light curves, with an initial rapid luminosity rise to a blue peak (at -13 to -15 mag), which is followed by a longer-duration red peak that sometimes is attenuated, resembling a plateau. The progenitors of three of them (NGC4490-2011OT1, M101-2015OT1, and SNhunt248), likely relatively massive blue to yellow stars, were also observed in a pre-eruptive stage when their luminosity was slowly increasing. Early spectra obtained during the first peak show a blue continuum with superposed prominent narrow Balmer lines, with P Cygni profiles. Lines of Fe II are also clearly observed, mostly in emission. During the second peak, the spectral continuum becomes much redder, Halpha is barely detected, and a forest of narrow metal lines is observed in absorption. Very late-time spectra (~6 months after blue peak) show an extremely red spectral continuum, peaking in the infrared (IR) domain. Halpha is detected in pure emission at such late phases, along with broad absorption bands due to molecular overtones (such as TiO, VO). We discuss a few alternative scenarios for LRNe. Although major instabilities of single massive stars cannot be definitely ruled out, we favour a common envelope ejection in a close binary system, with possibly a final coalescence of the two stars. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). We present optical spectroscopic and Swift UVOT/XRT observations of the X-ray and UV/optical bright tidal disruption event (TDE) AT 2018fyk/ASASSN-18ul discovered by ASAS-SN. The Swift lightcurve is atypical for a TDE, entering a plateau after $\sim$40 days of decline from peak. After 80 days the UV/optical lightcurve breaks again to decline further, while the X-ray emission becomes brighter and harder. In addition to broad H, He and potentially O/Fe lines, narrow emission lines emerge in the optical spectra during the plateau phase. We identify both high ionisation (O III) and low ionisation (Fe II) lines, which are visible for $\sim$45 days. We similarly identify Fe II lines in optical spectra of ASASSN-15oi 330 d after discovery, indicating that a class of Fe-rich TDEs exists. The spectral similarity between AT 2018fyk, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and some extreme coronal line emitters suggests that TDEs are capable of creating similar physical conditions in the nuclei of galaxies. The Fe II lines can be associated with the formation of a compact accretion disk, as the emergence of low ionisation emission lines requires optically thick, high density gas. Taken together with the plateau in X-ray and UV/optical luminosity this indicates that emission from the central source is efficiently reprocessed into UV/optical wavelengths. Such a two-component lightcurve is very similar to that seen in the TDE candidate ASASSN-15lh, and is a natural consequence of a highly relativistic orbital pericenter., Comment: Version accepted for publication in MNRAS

Here we present a critical view of practical problems in the analysis of optical Fe II emission lines of Type 1 AGN spectra. Besides the very complex and unclear physical interpretation of the Fe II template shape, there are other issues that might affect the results of Fe II contribution as well (like the S/N, the AGN continuum component modelling, the complex shapes of other broad and narrow emission lines that are blending in the same part of the spectrum, the galactic host stellar component that could lead to mimicking of the Fe II template shape on some parts of spectrum, etc.). In this paper we concentrate particularly on the claims of possibility that in some objects Fe II could be strongly shifted to the red. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). It is often believed that these AGN have small black hole mass, which is responsible for the narrowness of the permitted lines. They are also characterised by a high accretion rate, typically closer to the Eddington limit. Nevertheless, narrow permitted lines might also be caused by a disk-like broad-line region (BLR) viewed pole-on. This class of objects presents strong X-ray emission, which is characterised by a very steep spectral index described by a single power law. In particular, some of them exhibit particular features around the iron K-shell energy at 6-8 keV. Recently, this different spectral behaviour was attributed to inclination. In this work we are going to analyse optical spectra to measure in different ways the width of H$\beta$, which is another potential inclination indicator. We present a new accurate sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). Based on the optical spectral features, 167 sources were classified as NLS1s. We derived flux-calibrated spectra in the sample for the first time. Strong luminosity correlations between the continuum and the emission lines were found. We estimated their central black hole masses and Eddington ratios, which are lying in a typical range of NLS1s. In the sample, 23 NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies and 12 of them are radio-loud. Thanks to the execution of extensive spectroscopic surveys that have covered large fractions of the sky down to magnitudes as faint as $i \approx 19$, it has been possible to identify several narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and to investigate their properties over a large range of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The interpretation of their nature, however, is still hampered by the statistical uncertainties related to the way in which NLS1 candidates are selected. In this contribution, we present a study to detect and to model emission lines in optical spectra extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), adopting the most proper strategy to identify the source of line excitation and to produce a detailed model with measurements of several emission-line parameters. We demonstrate the application of this technique to explore fundamental questions, such as the presence of gas and dust around the core of AGNs and the spectral energy distribution of their ionizing radiation. We compare the spectral properties of NLS1s with those of other type 1 active galaxies and we summarize the potential of this approach to identify NLS1s in present day and future spectroscopic surveys. We present observations of supernova (SN) 2017ens, discovered by the ATLAS survey and identified as a hot blue object through the GREAT program. The redshift z=0.1086 implies a peak brightness of M_g=-21.1 mag, placing the object within the regime of superluminous supernovae. We observe a dramatic spectral evolution, from initially being blue and featureless, to later developing features similar to those of the broadlined Type Ic SN 1998bw, and finally showing ~2000 km s^-1 wide H-alpha and H-beta emission. Relatively narrow Balmer emission (reminiscent of a SN IIn) is present at all times. We also detect coronal lines, indicative of a dense circumstellar medium. We constrain the progenitor wind velocity to ~50-60 km s^-1 based on P-Cygni profiles, which is far slower than those present in Wolf-Rayet stars. This may suggest that the progenitor passed through a luminous blue variable phase, or that the wind is instead from a binary companion red supergiant star. At late times we see the ~2000 km s^-1 wide H-alpha emission persisting at high luminosity (~3x10^40 erg s^-1) for at least 100 day, perhaps indicative of additional mass loss at high velocities that could have been ejected by a pulsational pair instability., Comment: Accepted version in ApJL

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) which are known to be one of the few sources of $\gamma$ rays, which originate in a relativistic beamed jet. Becuase of their relatively large distance, a poorly investigated aspect of these jetted NLS1s is their environment, and in particular their host galaxy. In this work we present the results of a morphological analysis of the host galaxy of the jetted NLS1 IRAS 20181-2244 observed with the 6.5m Baade Telescope of the Las Campanas Observatory. The GALFIT analysis ran on the Ks image, along with additional spectroscopic observations performed with the Nordic Optical Telescope, clearly revealed the presence of an interacting system of two galaxies. The data suggest that this NLS1 is hosted by a late-type galaxy, although the result is not conclusive. This analysis, along with other results in the literature, might suggest that two populations of jetted NLS1 exist. The discovery of $\gamma$-ray emission from some radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RLNLS1s) indicated the presence of a relativistic beamed jet in these objects. This immediately opened a new question about their parent population: is how do they look like when observed at large angles? The study of the parent population has provided important new insights on the physical properties of this fascinating class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this work, I will review the most recent advances in the study of parent sources, and I will show the impact that a recent continuum survey carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array had on this topic. We present a new accurate catalog of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) final data release, which is currently the most extensive spectroscopic survey available in the southern sky whose database has not yet been systematically explored. We classified 167 sources as NLS1s based on their optical spectral properties. We derived flux-calibrated spectra for the first time that the 6dFGS indeed does not provide. By analyzing these spectra, we obtained strong correlations between the monochromatic luminosity at 5100 A and the luminosity of Hbeta and [O III]5007 lines. The estimated central black hole mass and Eddington ratio have an average value of 8.6 x 10^6 M_Sun and 0.96 L_Edd respectively, which is a typical value for NLS1s. In the sample, 23 (13.8%) NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies, and 12 (7.0%) of them are radio-loud. We report the first results of a survey on 74 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) carried out in 2015 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A-configuration. So far, this is the largest survey aimed to image the radio continuum of NLS1s. We produced radio maps in order to compare the general properties of three different samples of objects: radio-quiet NLS1s (RQNLS1s), steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (S-NLS1s), and flat-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (F-NLS1s). We find that the three classes correspond to different radio morphologies, with F-NLS1s being more compact, and RQNLS1s often showing diffuse emission on kpc scales. We also find that F-NLS1s might be low-luminosity and possibly young blazars, and that S-NLS1s are part of the parent population of F-NLS1s. Gravitational waves were discovered with the detection of binary black hole mergers and they should also be detectable from lower mass neutron star mergers. These are predicted to eject material rich in heavy radioactive isotopes that can power an electromagnetic signal called a kilonova. The gravitational wave source GW170817 arose from a binary neutron star merger in the nearby Universe with a relatively well confined sky position and distance estimate. Here we report observations and physical modelling of a rapidly fading electromagnetic transient in the galaxy NGC4993, which is spatially coincident with GW170817 and a weak short gamma-ray burst. The transient has physical parameters broadly matching the theoretical predictions of blue kilonovae from neutron star mergers. The emitted electromagnetic radiation can be explained with an ejected mass of 0.04 +/- 0.01 Msol, with an opacity of kappa <= 0.5 cm2/gm at a velocity of 0.2 +/- 0.1c. The power source is constrained to have a power law slope of beta = -1.2 +/- 0.3, consistent with radioactive powering from r-process nuclides. We identify line features in the spectra that are consistent with light r-process elements (90 < A < 140). As it fades, the transient rapidly becomes red, and emission may have contribution by a higher opacity, lanthanide-rich ejecta component. This indicates that neutron star mergers produce gravitational waves, radioactively powered kilonovae, and are a nucleosynthetic source of the r-process elements., Comment: Nature, in press, DOI 10.1038/nature24303. We report simultaneous observations at different energy bands in radio, optical, UV, X-rays and $\gamma$ rays of the flat-spectrum radio-quasar 3C 345. We built the light curve of the source at different frequencies from 2008, the beginning of the \textit{Fermi} all-sky survey, to 2016, using new data and public archives. In particular we obtained several optical spectra, to study the behavior of emission lines and the continuum in different activity states and to derive the black hole mass. 3C 345 showed two flaring episodes in 2009, which occurred simultaneously in $\gamma$ ray, optical/UV and X-rays, and were later followed in radio. The source shows an inverse Compton dominated spectral energy distribution, which moved from higher to lower frequencies from the high to the low state. The reverberation of emission lines during one outburst event allowed us to constrain the location of production of $\gamma$ rays very close to the broad-line region, and possibly in the jet-base. We report the observation of an increased accretion after the outburst, possibly induced by the decrease of magnetic field intensity with respect to the low state., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
