A brief overview of some of the ethical and legal issues that relate to EOSC. This is a handout that has been used in the EOSC Future train-the-trainer course "Ethical and Legal issues and EOSC" taught between 2022 and 2023.

The FAIR data principles are rapidly becoming a standard through which to assess responsible and reproducible research. The Accessibility criteria, often thought to be the most straightforward of the principles, are focussed on whether data and metadata can be accessed electronically (as opposed to accessibility in terms of physical disability). However, this perception is predicated on the assumption that data and metadata is deposited in a trustworthy digital repository and access to the repository is of the same quality regardless of who accesses it. We present the findings of a pilot study that demonstrates that this implicit assumption is not necessarily a valid one. In particular this assumption may not hold when connectivity is poor (as occurs for researchers from Low and Middle Income Counties) or connectivity is blocked for specific users on the basis of the country that they reside in (referred to as geo-blocking). This paper presents the findings of a pilot study that clearly indicated that access to FAIR data resources is influenced by a range of geo-political factors. The paper will also outline what would be the next steps for the FAIR community to safeguard access to Open resources to researchers around the world.

These recommendations have been produced by the participants in the “Open Science in the South. Management and openess of research data : panorama and perspectives in Africa” symposium, held in Cotonou (Benin) from 25 to 27 October 2022, by African, European and Canadian organizations. In line with the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and the Dakar Declaration (10.5281/zenodo.3577891)), these recommendations aim to support the implementation of a true culture of open science among African scientists.

Training Coordinators’ Community of Practice (CoP) Task Force on “Learning resources quality assurance” presents a generic framework and discipline agnostic recommendations for the quality assurance of learning resources and catalogues of learning resources and/or training/learning platforms that contain such resources. The generic QA framework defines the requirements that should be met in order to conduct QA in an efficient and effective way. The recommendations focus on online learning resources and take the form of self-assessment checklists of criteria, which are sufficiently general to cover many fields of application, while still being easily adaptable to specific use cases. In line with the generic character of the recommendations, content-related criteria (e.g. topics covered or accepted, accepted types and formats, etc.) are not elaborated on. On the other hand, in support of recent efforts towards establishing training platforms and catalogues of learning resources in Europe and beyond, special attention is paid to the criteria guiding the selection of resources to be included in a platform/catalogue.&nbsp

Abstract of the presentation: The Research Data Alliance (RDA) hosts more than hundreds Interest and Working Groups around various topics related to (open) research data and innovation. For newcomers it can be difficult to navigate the RDA landscape and understand how it operates, and which groups may be relevant to follow. To support (new) social science researchers, DANS has created a report that gives an introduction to RDA and an overview of the groups most relevant for the social science domain. Louise Bezuidenhout and Ricarda Braukmann will present an updated version of this report first published in 2018. In addition, they will provide an overview of upcoming events, initiatives and changes within the RDA.

This report summarises the methodology work done in task T6.2 of EOSC-Synergy focused on skills development and the “train the trainer” approach, as well as the university collaboration outcomes of task T6.3. This deliverable is complementary to the D6.2 that focussed on the Learn@Synergy platform release and also presents the evolution of the services provided in task T6.1 that has resulted as an outcome of user feedback., EOSC-SYNERGY receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 857647.

FAIRsFAIR - Fostering FAIR Data Practices in Europe - was a project that ran between March 2019 and February 2022. It involved 22 partners from 8 EU member states with 6 core partners (DANS, CSC, DCC, TrustIT, STFC, EUA). The project was designed to supply practical solutions for the use of FAIR data principles throughout the research data lifecycle. The work on the project was guided by commitments to openness, FAIR-ness and long-term sustainability of project outputs. This report describes the sustainability planning for 21 project outputs deemed of particular importance, both to EOSC and to the global research community. These outputs were categorized using the Horizon 2020 categories of Key Exploitable Resource, Key Output and Key Function. These outputs were highly diverse and ranged from frameworks and written reports to practical FAIR tools and stakeholder networks.

This report provides a summary of the three schools run for early career researchers (ECRs) during the FAIRsFAIR project. The curriculum provides a broad but shallow introduction to the necessary technical and social skills in Data Science for Early Career Researchers. In particular there are modules in Open and Responsible Research, Software Carpentry (the Unix command line, R or Python, git), Research Data Management, Visualisation, Information Security, Machine Learning, Author Carpentry and Computational Infrastructures. The schools were originally designed to be an intensive two week school run on a face to face basis.
