We study the accuracy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) for warm- and hot-dense matter (WDM and HDM). Specifically, considering a wide range of systems, we perform accurate ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with temperature-independent local/semilocal density functionals to determine the equations of state at compression ratios of 3x--7x and temperatures near 1 MK. We find very good agreement with path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) benchmarks, while having significantly smaller error bars and smoother data, demonstrating the fidelity of DFT for the study of WDM and HDM., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

We study the influence of mechanical deformations on the Zeeman and Rashba effects in synthesized transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes and their Janus variants from first principles. In particular, we perform symmetry-adapted density functional theory simulations with spin-orbit coupling to determine the variation in the Zeeman and Rashba splittings with axial and torsional deformations. We find significant splitting in molybdenum and tungsten nanotubes, for which the Zeeman splitting decreases with increase in strain, going to zero for large enough tensile/shear strains, while the Rashba splitting coefficient increases linearly with shear strain, while being zero for all tensile strains, a consequence of the inversion symmetry remaining unbroken. In addition, the Zeeman splitting is relatively unaffected by nanotube diameter, whereas the Rashba coefficient decreases with increase in diameter. We study the electronic response of Janus transition metal dihalide (TMH) nanotubes to mechanical deformations using Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Specifically, considering twelve armchair and zigzag Janus TMH nanotubes that are expected to be stable from the phonon analysis of flat monolayer counterparts, we first compute their equilibrium diameters and then determine the variation in bandgap and effective mass of charge carriers with the application of tensile and torsional deformations. We find that the nanotubes undergo a linear and quadratic decrease in bandgap with tensile and shear strain, respectively. In addition, there is a continual increase and decrease in the effective mass of electrons and holes, respectively. We show that for a given strain, the change in bandgap for the armchair nanotubes can be correlated with the transition metal's in-plane $d$ orbital's contribution to the projected density of states at the bottom of the conduction band., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We study the electromechanical response of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes from first principles. In particular, considering both armchair and zigzag variants of twenty-seven select Janus TMD nanotubes, we determine the change in bandgap and charge carriers' effective mass upon axial and torsional deformations using density functional theory (DFT). We observe that metallic nanotubes remain unaffected, whereas the bandgap in semiconducting nanotubes decreases linearly and quadratically with axial and shear strains, respectively, leading to semiconductor--metal transitions. In addition, we find that there is a continuous decrease and increase in the effective mass of holes and electrons with strains, respectively, leading to n-type--p-type semiconductor transitions. We show that this behavior is a consequence of the rehybridization of orbitals, rather than charge transfer between the atoms. Overall, mechanical deformations form a powerful tool for tailoring the electronic response of semiconducting Janus TMD nanotubes., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We calculate the elastic properties of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes using first principles Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). Specifically, we perform electronic structure simulations that exploit the cyclic and helical symmetry in the system to compute the Young's moduli, Poisson's ratios, and torsional moduli for twenty-seven select armchair and zigzag Janus TMD nanotubes at their equilibrium diameters. We find the following trend in the moduli values: MSSe > MSTe > MSeTe, while their anisotropy with respect to armchair and zigzag configurations has the following ordering: MSTe > MSeTe > MSSe. This anisotropy and its ordering between the different groups is confirmed by computing the shear modulus from the torsional modulus using an isotropic elastic continuum model, and comparing it against the value predicted from the isotropic relation featuring the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. We study the effect of torsional deformations on the electronic properties of single-walled transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes. In particular, considering forty-five select armchair and zigzag TMD nanotubes, we perform symmetry-adapted Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations to determine the variation in bandgap and effective mass of charge carriers with twist. We find that metallic nanotubes remain so even after deformation, whereas semiconducting nanotubes experience a decrease in bandgap with twist -- originally direct bandgaps become indirect -- resulting in semiconductor to metal transitions. In addition, the effective mass of holes and electrons continuously decrease and increase with twist, respectively, resulting in n-type to p-type semiconductor transitions. We find that this behavior is likely due to rehybridization of orbitals in the metal and chalcogen atoms, rather than charge transfer between them. Overall, torsional deformations represent a powerful avenue to engineer the electronic properties of semiconducting TMD nanotubes, with applications to devices like sensors and semiconductor switches., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

We calculate the torsional moduli of single-walled transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes using ab initio density functional theory (DFT). Specifically, considering forty-five select TMD nanotubes, we perform symmetry-adapted DFT calculations to calculate the torsional moduli for the armchair and zigzag variants of these materials in the low-twist regime and at practically relevant diameters. We find that the torsional moduli follow the trend: MS$_2$ $>$ MSe$_2$ $>$ MTe$_2$. In addition, the moduli display a power law dependence on diameter, with the scaling generally close to cubic, as predicted by the isotropic elastic continuum model. In particular, the shear moduli so computed are in good agreement with those predicted by the isotropic relation in terms of the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, both of which are also calculated using symmetry-adapted DFT. Finally, we develop a linear regression model for the torsional moduli of TMD nanotubes based on the nature/characteristics of the metal-chalcogen bond, and show that it is capable of making reasonably accurate predictions., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, 1 table
