2. SafeTail: Efficient Tail Latency Optimization in Edge Service Scheduling via Computational Redundancy Management

Optimizing tail latency while efficiently managing computational resources is crucial for delivering high-performance, latency-sensitive services in edge computing. Emerging applications, such as augmented reality, require low-latency computing services with high reliability on user devices, which often have limited computational capabilities. Consequently, these devices depend on nearby edge servers for processing. However, inherent uncertainties in network and computation latencies stemming from variability in wireless networks and fluctuating server loads make service delivery on time challenging. Existing approaches often focus on optimizing median latency but fall short of addressing the specific challenges of tail latency in edge environments, particularly under uncertain network and computational conditions. Although some methods do address tail latency, they typically rely on fixed or excessive redundancy and lack adaptability to dynamic network conditions, often being designed for cloud environments rather than the unique demands of edge computing. In this paper, we introduce SafeTail, a framework that meets both median and tail response time targets, with tail latency defined as latency beyond the 90^th percentile threshold. SafeTail addresses this challenge by selectively replicating services across multiple edge servers to meet target latencies. SafeTail employs a reward-based deep learning framework to learn optimal placement strategies, balancing the need to achieve target latencies with minimizing additional resource usage. Through trace-driven simulations, SafeTail demonstrated near-optimal performance and outperformed most baseline strategies across three diverse services., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. 3. Leveraging Persistent Homology for Differential Diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is characterized by subtle changes in cognitive functions, often associated with disruptions in brain connectivity. The present study introduces a novel fine-grained analysis to examine topological alterations in neurodegeneration pertaining to six different brain networks of MCI subjects (Early/Late MCI). To achieve this, fMRI time series from two distinct populations are investigated: (i) the publicly accessible ADNI dataset and (ii) our in-house dataset. The study utilizes sliding window embedding to convert each fMRI time series into a sequence of 3-dimensional vectors, facilitating the assessment of changes in regional brain topology. Distinct persistence diagrams are computed for Betti descriptors of dimension-0, 1, and 2. Wasserstein distance metric is used to quantify differences in topological characteristics. We have examined both (i) ROI-specific inter-subject interactions and (ii) subject-specific inter-ROI interactions. Further, a new deep learning model is proposed for classification, achieving a maximum classification accuracy of 95% for the ADNI dataset and 85% for the in-house dataset. This methodology is further adapted for the differential diagnosis of MCI sub-types, resulting in a peak accuracy of 76.5%, 91.1% and 80% in classifying HC Vs. EMCI, HC Vs. LMCI and EMCI Vs. LMCI, respectively. 4. Cocoon shock breakout emission from binary neutron star mergers

Shock breakout emission is among the first observable signals in a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena, including neutron star (NS) mergers, and it can be the dominant component in low-luminosity short gamma-ray bursts (llsGRBs), as exemplified by GRB 170817A. In this work, we investigate the cocoon shock breakout emission in NS mergers and how its signal depends on the outermost layers of the ejecta profile, which we derive from general relativistic radiation hydrodynamic simulations. We study the formation of the cocoon as a consequence of a relativistic jet propagating through the ejecta. To explore the influence of the outermost layers of the ejecta on the breakout emission, we explore cases where the ejecta has a sharp cutoff or an extended smooth tail. We find that the shock breakout emission is strongly influenced by the shape of the ejecta outer layers, with extended tails yielding results consistent with the observed properties of GRB 170817A, whereas sharp cutoffs overestimate the radiated energy. Using a Bayesian analysis, we estimate the best fit parameters of the central engine, considering both accreting black hole and magnetized neutron star scenarios. Our findings indicate a slight preference for the scenarios where the engine is a black hole. Our work probes the nature of neutron star mergers and highlights the importance of the shape of the ejecta profile in modeling early electromagnetic counterparts to these mergers., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures

5. Electric field induced second-order anomalous Hall transport in unconventional Rashba system

Nonlinear responses in transport experiments may unveil information and generate new phenomena in materials that are not accessible at linear order due to symmetry constraints. While the linear anomalous Hall response strictly requires the absence of time-reversal symmetry, the second-order, thus nonlinear, Hall response needs broken inversion symmetry. Recently, much effort has been made to obtain a second-order Hall voltage in response to a longitudinal ac driving current, both to obtain information about band geometric quantities and for its useful technological applications, including rectification and frequency doubling. Typically, additional material engineering is required in noncentrosymmetric systems to obtain second-order responses since it obeys a stringent crystallographic symmetry constraint. To circumvent this, an alternative route is to apply a dc electric field. In this Letter, we uncover an electric field induced second-order anomalous Hall effect in an inversion-broken system possessing unconventional Rashba bands. We establish that the quantum metric, a geometrical feature of electronic wave functions providing information on non-trivial structure of Bloch bands, is responsible for providing the nonlinear Hall response., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

6. FastTextSpotter: A High-Efficiency Transformer for Multilingual Scene Text Spotting

The proliferation of scene text in both structured and unstructured environments presents significant challenges in optical character recognition (OCR), necessitating more efficient and robust text spotting solutions. This paper presents FastTextSpotter, a framework that integrates a Swin Transformer visual backbone with a Transformer Encoder-Decoder architecture, enhanced by a novel, faster self-attention unit, SAC2, to improve processing speeds while maintaining accuracy. FastTextSpotter has been validated across multiple datasets, including ICDAR2015 for regular texts and CTW1500 and TotalText for arbitrary-shaped texts, benchmarking against current state-of-the-art models. Our results indicate that FastTextSpotter not only achieves superior accuracy in detecting and recognizing multilingual scene text (English and Vietnamese) but also improves model efficiency, thereby setting new benchmarks in the field. This study underscores the potential of advanced transformer architectures in improving the adaptability and speed of text spotting applications in diverse real-world settings. 7. MobileQuant: Mobile-friendly Quantization for On-device Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized language processing, delivering outstanding results across multiple applications. However, deploying LLMs on edge devices poses several challenges with respect to memory, energy, and compute costs, limiting their widespread use in devices such as mobile phones. A promising solution is to reduce the number of bits used to represent weights and activations. While existing works have found partial success at quantizing LLMs to lower bitwidths, e.g. 4-bit weights, quantizing activations beyond 16 bits often leads to large computational overheads due to poor on-device quantization support, or a considerable accuracy drop. Yet, 8-bit activations are very attractive for on-device deployment as they would enable LLMs to fully exploit mobile-friendly hardware, e.g. Neural Processing Units (NPUs). In this work, we make a first attempt to facilitate the on-device deployment of LLMs using integer-only quantization. We first investigate the limitations of existing quantization methods for on-device deployment, with a special focus on activation quantization. We then address these limitations by introducing a simple post-training quantization method, named MobileQuant, that extends previous weight equivalent transformation works by jointly optimizing the weight transformation and activation range parameters in an end-to-end manner. MobileQuant demonstrates superior capabilities over existing methods by 1) achieving near-lossless quantization on a wide range of LLM benchmarks, 2) reducing latency and energy consumption by 20\%-50\% compared to current on-device quantization strategies, 3) requiring limited compute budget, 4) being compatible with mobile-friendly compute units, e.g. NPU., Comment: Code and models available: https://github.com/saic-fi/MobileQuant

9. Unveiling galaxy chemical enrichment mechanisms out to cosmic dawn from direct determination of O & Ar abundances from JWST/NIRSPEC spectroscopy

Galaxy chemical enrichment mechanisms have primarily been constrained by [$\alpha$/Fe] and [Fe/H] measurements of individual stars and integrated light from stellar populations. However such measurements are limited at higher redshifts (z>1). Recently, we proposed an analogous diagram of the oxygen-to-argon abundance ratio, log(O/Ar), vs Ar abundance, 12+log(Ar/H), as a new diagnostic window for emission nebulae. In this Letter, using robust line flux measurements including temperature sensitive auroral lines, we present direct determination of O and Ar abundances in nine SFGs from JWST/NIRSPEC spectra at z$\sim$1.3-7.7, and two more with Keck/MOSFIRE spectra at z$\sim$2.2. Utilising their positions on the log(O/Ar) vs 12+log(Ar/H) plane, we present the first inference of galaxy chemical enrichment mechanisms from an ensemble of galaxies. The SFGs at z$\sim$1.3-3.4 are consistent with the solar neighbourhood galactic chemical enrichment models of the Milky Way Galaxy that are driven by core-collapse and Type Ia supernovae. Such enrichment mechanisms thus occur at least out to z$\sim$3.4. However, the highest-redshift SFGs (z$\sim$3.6-7.7) have very low log(O/Ar) values, revealing a different enrichment process at z>3.6. Such low log(O/Ar) values may be caused by a rapid but intermittent star-formation and/or additional sources. 10. A Deadline-Aware Scheduler for Smart Factory using WiFi 6

A key strategy for making production in factories more efficient is to collect data about the functioning of machines, and dynamically adapt their working. Such smart factories have data packets with a mix of stringent and non-stringent deadlines with varying levels of importance that need to be delivered via a wireless network. However, the scheduling of packets in the wireless network is crucial to satisfy the deadlines. In this work, we propose a technique of utilizing IEEE 802.11ax, popularly known as WiFi 6, for such applications. IEEE 802.11ax has a few unique characteristics, such as specific configurations of dividing the channels into resource units (RU) for packet transmission and synchronized parallel transmissions. We model the problem of scheduling packets by assigning profit to each packet and then maximizing the sum of profits. We first show that this problem is strongly NP-Hard, and then propose an approximation algorithm with a 12-approximate algorithm. Our approximation algorithm uses a variant of local search to associate the right RU configuration to each packet and identify the duration of each parallel transmission. Finally, we extensively simulate different scenarios to show that our algorithm works better than other benchmarks.

The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

In this work, we explore the effect of neutrino nonstandard interactions (NSI) involving the charm quark at SND@LHC. Using an effective description of new physics in terms of four-fermion operators involving a charm quark, we constrain the Wilson coefficients of the effective interaction from two and three-body charmed meson decays. In our fit, we include charmed meson decays not only to pseudoscalar final states but also to vector final states and include decays to the $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ final states. We also consider constraints from charmed baryon decays. We then study the effect of new physics in neutrino scattering processes, involving charm production at SND@LHC, for various benchmark new physics couplings obtained from the low energy fits. Finally, we also study the effects of lepton universality violation (LUV) assuming that the new physics coupling is not lepton universal., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

Building on previous works to construct a homogeneous sample of brown dwarfs in binary systems, we investigate microlensing events detected by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) survey during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Given the difficulty in distinguishing brown-dwarf events from those produced by binary lenses with nearly equal-mass components, we analyze all lensing events detected during the seasons that exhibit anomalies characteristic of binary-lens systems. Using the same criteria consistently applied in previous studies, we identify six additional brown dwarf candidates through the analysis of lensing events KMT-2022-BLG-0412, KMT-2022-BLG-2286, KMT-2023-BLG-0201, KMT-2023-BLG-0601, KMT-2023-BLG-1684, and KMT-2023-BLG-1743. An examination of the mass posteriors shows that the median mass of the lens companions ranges from 0.02 $M_\odot$ to 0.05 $M_\odot$, indicating that these companions fall within the brown-dwarf mass range. The mass of the primary lenses ranges from 0.11 $M_\odot$ to 0.68 $M_\odot$, indicating that they are low-mass stars with substantially lower masses compared to the Sun., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, 12 tables

The LPC EFT workshop was held April 25-26, 2024 at the University of Notre Dame. The workshop was organized into five thematic sessions: "how far beyond linear" discusses issues of truncation and validity in interpretation of results with an eye towards practicality; "reconstruction-level results" visits the question of how best to design analyses directly targeting inference of EFT parameters; "logistics of combining likelihoods" addresses the challenges of bringing a diverse array of measurements into a cohesive whole; "unfolded results" tackles the question of designing fiducial measurements for later use in EFT interpretations, and the benefits and limitations of unfolding; and "building a sample library" addresses how best to generate simulation samples for use in data analysis. This document serves as a summary of presentations, subsequent discussions, and actionable items identified over the course of the workshop.

15. Quantum chaos and complexity from string scattering amplitudes

We introduce Krylov spread complexity in the context of black hole scattering by studying highly excited string states (HESS). Krylov complexity characterizes chaos by quantifying the spread of a state or operator under a known Hamiltonian. In contrast, quantum field theory often relies on S-matrices, where the Hamiltonian density becomes non-trivially time-dependent rendering the computations of complexity in Krylov basis exponentially hard. We define Krylov spread complexity for scattering amplitudes by analyzing the distribution of extrema, treating these as eigenvalues of a fictional Hamiltonian that evolves a thermo-field double state non-trivially. Our analysis of black hole scattering, through highly excited string states scattering into two or three tachyons, reveals that the Krylov complexity of these amplitudes mirrors the behavior of chaotic Hamiltonian evolution, with a pre-saturation peak indicating chaos. This formalism bridges the concepts of chaos in scattering and state evolution, offering a framework to distinguish different scattering processes., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures (plus 6 pages, 6 figures appendix)

However, our evaluation shows that both categories of defenses fail \textit{when some specific training hyper-parameters are chosen} -- a large learning rate or a large number of training epochs in the fine-tuning stage can easily invalidate the defense, which however, is necessary to guarantee finetune performance. To this end, we propose Antidote, a post-fine-tuning stage solution, which remains \textbf{\textit{agnostic to the training hyper-parameters in the fine-tuning stage}}. Antidote relies on the philosophy that by removing the harmful parameters, the harmful model can be recovered from the harmful behaviors, regardless of how those harmful parameters are formed in the fine-tuning stage. With this philosophy, we introduce a one-shot pruning stage after harmful fine-tuning to remove the harmful weights that are responsible for the generation of harmful content. Despite its embarrassing simplicity, empirical results show that Antidote can reduce harmful score while maintaining accuracy on downstream tasks.

The Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations form a coupled parabolic-elliptic system, which models the transport of charged particles under the influence of diffusion and electric force. In this paper, we rigorously derive a homogenized model for the PNP equations, for the case of multiple species, defined on a periodic porous medium in spatial dimensions two and three. This extends the previous homogenization results for the PNP equations concerning two species. Here, the main difficulty is that the microscopic concentrations remain uniformly bounded in a space with relatively weak regularity. Therefore, the standard Aubin-Lions-Simon-type compactness results for porous media, which give strong convergence of the microscopic solutions, become inapplicable in our weak setting. We overcome this problem by constructing suitable cut-off functions. The cut-off function, together with the previously known energy functional associated with the system, gives us equicontinuity of the microscopic concentrations on the part of the domain where the values of the concentrations do not exceed the height of the cut-off function. Moreover, it turns out that, on the remaining part of the domain where the concentrations are larger than the height of the cut-off function, the application of the energy functional is enough in order to obtain equicontinuity. These arguments eventually yield strong convergence of the microscopic concentrations in $L^1_t L^r_x$, for some $r>2$, enabling us to pass to the limit in the nonlinear drift term. Finally, we derive the homogenized equations by means of two-scale convergence in $L^p_t L^q_x$ setting.

In this work, for the first time, a density functional theory (DFT) based comprehensive theoretical study is performed on the surface electronic properties of Bi2Se3 nanosheet in the presence of a surface capping layer as well as mechanical strain. The study systematically introduces a biaxial compressive and tensile strain up to 5% in natural, Sb2Se3 surface capped, and SbBiSe3 surface capped Bi2Se3, and the subsequent effects on the electronic properties are assessed from the surface energy band (E-k) structure, the density of states (DOS), band edge energy and bandgap variations, surface conducting state localization, and Fermi surface spin-textures. The key findings of this work are systematically analyzed from conducting surface state hybridization through bulk in the presence of surface capping layers and applied biaxial strain. The result demonstrates that the interplay of surface capping and strain can simultaneously tune the surface electronic structure, spin-momentum locking results from change in electronic localization and interactions. In essence, this work presents an extensive theoretical and design-level insight into the surface capping and biaxial strain co-engineering in Bi2Se3, which can potentially facilitate different topological transport for modern optoelectronics, spintronics, valleytronics, bulk photovoltaics applications of engineered nanostructured topological materials in the future.

21. Correlation Weighted Prototype-based Self-Supervised One-Shot Segmentation of Medical Images

Medical image segmentation is one of the domains where sufficient annotated data is not available. This necessitates the application of low-data frameworks like few-shot learning. Contemporary prototype-based frameworks often do not account for the variation in features within the support and query images, giving rise to a large variance in prototype alignment. In this work, we adopt a prototype-based self-supervised one-way one-shot learning framework using pseudo-labels generated from superpixels to learn the semantic segmentation task itself. We use a correlation-based probability score to generate a dynamic prototype for each query pixel from the bag of prototypes obtained from the support feature map. This weighting scheme helps to give a higher weightage to contextually related prototypes. We also propose a quadrant masking strategy in the downstream segmentation task by utilizing prior domain information to discard unwanted false positives. We present extensive experimentations and evaluations on abdominal CT and MR datasets to show that the proposed simple but potent framework performs at par with the state-of-the-art methods., Comment: Accepted to ICPR 2024

The accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR~J17498-2921 went into X-ray outburst on April 13-15, 2023, for the first time since its discovery on August 11, 2011. Here, we report on the first follow-up \nustar{} observation of the source, performed on April 23, 2023, around ten days after the peak of the outburst. The \nustar{} spectrum of the persistent emission ($3-60$ \kev{} band) is well described by an absorbed blackbody with a temperature of $kT_{bb}=1.61\pm 0.04$\kev{}, most likely arising from the NS surface and a Comptonization component with power-law index $\Gamma=1.79\pm0.02$, arising from a hot corona at $kT_{e}=16\pm 2$ keV. The X-ray spectrum of the source shows robust reflection features which have not been observed before. We use a couple of self-consistent reflection models, {\tt relxill} and {\tt relxillCp}, to fit the reflection features. We find an upper limit to the inner disc radius of $ 6\: R_{ISCO}$ and $ 9\: R_{ISCO}$ from {\tt relxill} and {\tt relxillCp} model, respectively. The inclination of the system is estimated to be $\simeq 40\degr$ from both reflection models. Assuming magnetic truncation of the accretion disc, the upper limit of magnetic field strength at the pole of the NS is found to be $B\lesssim 1.8\times 10^{8}$ G. Furthermore, the \nustar{} observation revealed two type I X-ray bursts and the burst spectroscopy confirms the thermonuclear nature of the burst. 23. Exploring Non-Markovianity in Ergodic Channels: Introducing Ergotropy as a Measure

In this work, we characterise a general set of quantum operations which possess a singular fixed point. These channels are dubbed as quantum ergodic channels. We have constructed Lindblad-type master equations for such channels for arbitrary dimensions. We also characterise the aspect of non-Markovianity for such a general class of channels. Interestingly, if the fixed point is considered a passive state, it turns out to be an ergotropy-decreasing channel at a given instant. The formalism of ergotropy is widely used in quantum batteries, where it quantifies how effectively a quantum battery can be used as an energy source under unitary evolution only. Our investigation explores how the usefulness of a quantum battery, or the ergotropy of a system, varies under ergodic dynamics. We observed that, while ergotropy always decreases in a Markovian process, it fluctuates under non-Markovian ergodic dynamics. This ergotropy backflow in the non-Markovian process makes it a potential candidate for measuring non-Markovianity. Consequently, this study enhances our understanding of quantum battery evolution in open dynamics and paves the way for more efficient quantum technology., Comment: 11 pages , 3 figures

24. Code-switching in text and speech reveals information-theoretic audience design

In this work, we use language modeling to investigate the factors that influence code-switching. Code-switching occurs when a speaker alternates between one language variety (the primary language) and another (the secondary language), and is widely observed in multilingual contexts. Recent work has shown that code-switching is often correlated with areas of high information load in the primary language, but it is unclear whether high primary language load only makes the secondary language relatively easier to produce at code-switching points (speaker-driven code-switching), or whether code-switching is additionally used by speakers to signal the need for greater attention on the part of listeners (audience-driven code-switching). In this paper, we use bilingual Chinese-English online forum posts and transcripts of spontaneous Chinese-English speech to replicate prior findings that high primary language (Chinese) information load is correlated with switches to the secondary language (English). We then demonstrate that the information load of the English productions is even higher than that of meaning equivalent Chinese alternatives, and these are therefore not easier to produce, providing evidence of audience-driven influences in code-switching at the level of the communication channel, not just at the sociolinguistic level, in both writing and speech., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Memory and Language on 7 June 2024

Let $X \subset \mathbb P^3$ be a nonsingular cubic hypersurface. Faenzi (\cite{F}) and later Pons-Llopis and Tonini (\cite{PLT}) have completely characterized ACM line bundles over $X$. As a natural continuation of their study in the non-ACM direction, in this paper, we completely classify $\ell$-away ACM line bundles (introduced recently by Gawron and Genc (\cite{GG})) over $X$, when $\ell \leq 2$. For $\ell\geq 3$, we give examples of $\ell$-away ACM line bundles on $X$ and for each $\ell \geq 1$, we establish the existence of smooth hypersurfaces $X^{(d)}$ of degree $d >\ell$ in $\mathbb P^3$ admitting $\ell$-away ACM line bundles., Comment: 33 pages. We present the AstroSat UV Deep Field South (AUDFs), an imaging survey using the wide-field Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on board AstroSat. AUDFs covers $\sim 236$ arcmin$^{2}$ of the sky area, including the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) South field in F154W and N242W filters. The deep and shallow parts of AUDFs have exposure time $\sim 62000$ and $\sim31000$ sec respectively, in the F154W filter, while in the N242W filter, they are $\sim 64000$ and $\sim34000$ sec. These observations reached a $3\sigma$ depth of 27.2 and 27.7 AB mag with a $50\%$ completeness limit of 27 and 27.6 AB mag in the F154W and N242W filters, respectively. With the acquired depth, AUDFs is the deepest far and near-UV imaging data covering the largest area known to date at 1.2" - 1.6" spatial resolution. Two primary catalogs were constructed for the F154W and N242W filters, each containing 13495 and 19374 sources brighter than the 3$\sigma$ detection limit, respectively. Our galaxy counts power-law slope $\sim0.43$~dex~mag$^{-1}$ in the N242W filter matches well with HST/WFC3/UVIS observations. A wide range of extra-galactic science can be achieved with this unique data, such as providing a sample of galaxies emitting ionizing photons in the redshift range $z \sim 1 - 3$ and beyond; constraining the UV luminosity function, investigating the extended-UV (XUV) emission around star-forming galaxies and UV morphologies for $z < 1$. 27. XMM-Newton high-resolution spectroscopy of EXO 0748-676 after its re-emergence from a long quiescence

EXO 0748-676 is a well-studied neutron star (NS) Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) that recently emerged from 16 years of quiescence into a new outburst. Here, we report the results from a 53 ks XMM-Newton observation to compare with studies for the previous outburst, particularly focusing on high-resolution spectroscopy using the same instrument (RGS) that produced important results for this source during the previous outburst. The EPIC light curve reveals a type I X-ray burst at MJD 60492.31. The entire data are divided into burstless, pre-, and post-burst spectra to understand the effect of the burst on the ionization structure. The spectra for dip and non-dip phases are also created. The primary spectral feature in all phases is a broad O VII recombination line, along with velocity-broadened OVIII, NVII, and Ne IX lines. Notably, the Ne IX line is detected at different ionization states for the pre-burst (11.65 \AA) and post-burst (13.56 \AA) phases. The O VIII line profile also shows a difference in equivalent width between dip and non-dip phases. These findings suggest the presence of highly ionized circumstellar material or collisionally ionized gas affected by the burst and dips. Multi-channel ECG-based cardiac disorders detection has an impact on cardiac care and treatment. Limitations of existing methods included variation in ECG waveforms due to the location of electrodes, high non-linearity in the signal, and amplitude measurement in millivolts. The present study reports a non-linear analysis-based methodology that utilizes Recurrence plot visualization. The patterned occurrence of well-defined structures, such as the QRS complex, can be exploited effectively using Recurrence plots. This Recurrence-based method is applied to the publicly available Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) dataset from PhysioNet database, where we studied four classes of different cardiac disorders (Myocardial infarction, Bundle branch blocks, Cardiomyopathy, and Dysrhythmia) and healthy controls, achieving an impressive classification accuracy of 100%. Additionally, t-SNE plot visualizations of the latent space embeddings derived from Recurrence plots and Recurrence Quantification Analysis features reveal a clear demarcation between the considered cardiac disorders and healthy individuals, demonstrating the potential of this approach., Comment: 23 pages, 9 Figures, 3 Tables

29. Fully Dynamic $k$-Clustering with Fast Update Time and Small Recourse

In the dynamic metric $k$-median problem, we wish to maintain a set of $k$ centers $S \subseteq V$ in an input metric space $(V, d)$ that gets updated via point insertions/deletions, so as to minimize the objective $\sum_{x \in V} \min_{y \in S} d(x, y)$. The quality of a dynamic algorithm is measured in terms of its approximation ratio, "recourse" (the number of changes in $S$ per update) and "update time" (the time it takes to handle an update). The ultimate goal in this line of research is to obtain a dynamic $O(1)$ approximation algorithm with $\tilde{O}(1)$ recourse and $\tilde{O}(k)$ update time. Dynamic $k$-median is a canonical example of a class of problems known as dynamic $k$-clustering, that has received significant attention in recent years. To the best of our knowledge, however, previous papers either attempt to minimize the algorithm's recourse while ignoring its update time, or minimize the algorithm's update time while ignoring its recourse. For dynamic $k$-median, we come arbitrarily close to resolving the main open question on this topic, with the following results. (I) We develop a new framework of randomized local search that is suitable for adaptation in a dynamic setting. For every $\epsilon > 0$, this gives us a dynamic $k$-median algorithm with $O(1/\epsilon)$ approximation ratio, $\tilde{O}(k^{\epsilon})$ recourse and $\tilde{O}(k^{1+\epsilon})$ update time. This framework also generalizes to dynamic $k$-clustering with $\ell^p$-norm objectives, giving similar bounds for the dynamic $k$-means and a new trade-off for dynamic $k$-center. (II) If it suffices to maintain only an estimate of the value of the optimal $k$-median objective, then we obtain a $O(1)$ approximation algorithm with $\tilde{O}(k)$ update time. ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

In this paper we introduce a new measure of conditional dependence between two random vectors ${\boldsymbol X}$ and ${\boldsymbol Y}$ given another random vector $\boldsymbol Z$ using the ball divergence. Our measure characterizes conditional independence and does not require any moment assumptions. We propose a consistent estimator of the measure using a kernel averaging technique and derive its asymptotic distribution. Using this statistic we construct two tests for conditional independence, one in the model-${\boldsymbol X}$ framework and the other based on a novel local wild bootstrap algorithm. In the model-${\boldsymbol X}$ framework, which assumes the knowledge of the distribution of ${\boldsymbol X}|{\boldsymbol Z}$, applying the conditional randomization test we obtain a method that controls Type I error in finite samples and is asymptotically consistent, even if the distribution of ${\boldsymbol X}|{\boldsymbol Z}$ is incorrectly specified up to distance preserving transformations. More generally, in situations where ${\boldsymbol X}|{\boldsymbol Z}$ is unknown or hard to estimate, we design a double-bandwidth based local wild bootstrap algorithm that asymptotically controls both Type I error and power. We illustrate the advantage of our method, both in terms of Type I error and power, in a range of simulation settings and also in a real data example. A consequence of our theoretical results is a general framework for studying the asymptotic properties of a 2-sample conditional $V$-statistic, which is of independent interest.

This research develops a new method to detect anomalies in time series data using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in healthcare-IoT. The proposed method creates a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack using an IoT network simulator, Cooja, which emulates environmental sensors such as temperature and humidity. CNNs detect anomalies in time series data, resulting in a 92\% accuracy in identifying possible attacks.

33. Deterministic photonic entanglement arising from non-Abelian quantum holonomy

Realizing deterministic, high-fidelity entangling interactions--of the kind that can be utilized for efficient quantum information processing--between photons remains an elusive goal. Here, we address this long-standing issue by devising a protocol for creating and manipulating highly-entangled superpositions of well-controlled states of light by using an on-chip photonic system that has recently been shown to implement three-dimensional, non-Abelian quantum holonomy. Our calculations indicate that a subset of such entangled superpositions are maximally-entangled, volume-law states, and that the underlying entanglement can be distilled and purified for applications in quantum science. Specifically, we envisage that this entangling mechanism could be utilized for realizing two-qubit, universal, entangling quantum gates with linear photonic elements alone. We study causal effect estimation from observational data under interference. The interference pattern is captured by an observed network. We adopt the chain graph framework of Tchetgen Tchetgen et. al. (2021), which allows (i) interaction among the outcomes of distinct study units connected along the graph and (ii) long range interference, whereby the outcome of an unit may depend on the treatments assigned to distant units connected along the interference network. For ``mean-field" interaction networks, we develop a new scalable iterative algorithm to estimate the causal effects. For gaussian weighted networks, we introduce a novel causal effect estimation algorithm based on Approximate Message Passing (AMP). Our algorithms are provably consistent under a ``high-temperature" condition on the underlying model. We estimate the (unknown) parameters of the model from data using maximum pseudo-likelihood and establish $\sqrt{n}$-consistency of this estimator in all parameter regimes. Finally, we prove that the downstream estimators obtained by plugging in estimated parameters into the aforementioned algorithms are consistent at high-temperature. Recommender systems have played a critical role in diverse digital services such as e-commerce, streaming media, social networks, etc. If we know what a user's intent is in a given session (e.g. do they want to watch short videos or a movie or play games; are they shopping for a camping trip), it becomes easier to provide high-quality recommendations. In this paper, we introduce IntentRec, a novel recommendation framework based on hierarchical multi-task neural network architecture that tries to estimate a user's latent intent using their short- and long-term implicit signals as proxies and uses the intent prediction to predict the next item user is likely to engage with. By directly leveraging the intent prediction, we can offer accurate and personalized recommendations to users. Our comprehensive experiments on Netflix user engagement data show that IntentRec outperforms the state-of-the-art next-item and next-intent predictors. We also share several findings and downstream applications of IntentRec.

Recent advances in molecular and genetic research have identified a diverse range of brain tumor sub-types, shedding light on differences in their molecular mechanisms, heterogeneity, and origins. The present study performs whole-brain connectome analysis using diffusionweighted images. To achieve this, both graph theory and persistent homology - a prominent approach in topological data analysis are employed in order to quantify changes in the structural connectivity of the wholebrain connectome in subjects with brain tumors. Probabilistic tractography is used to map the number of streamlines connecting 84 distinct brain regions, as delineated by the Desikan-Killiany atlas from FreeSurfer. These streamline mappings form the connectome matrix, on which persistent homology based analysis and graph theoretical analysis are executed to evaluate the discriminatory power between tumor sub-types that include meningioma and glioma. A detailed statistical analysis is conducted on persistent homology-derived topological features and graphical features to identify the brain regions where differences between study groups are statistically significant (p < 0.05). For classification purpose, graph-based local features are utilized, achieving a highest accuracy of 88%. In classifying tumor sub-types, an accuracy of 80% is attained. In this paper we introduce a kernel-based measure for detecting differences between two conditional distributions. Using the `kernel trick' and nearest-neighbor graphs, we propose a consistent estimate of this measure which can be computed in nearly linear time (for a fixed number of nearest neighbors). Moreover, when the two conditional distributions are the same, the estimate has a Gaussian limit and its asymptotic variance has a simple form that can be easily estimated from the data. The resulting test attains precise asymptotic level and is universally consistent for detecting differences between two conditional distributions. We also provide a resampling based test using our estimate that applies to the conditional goodness-of-fit problem, which controls Type I error in finite samples and is asymptotically consistent with only a finite number of resamples. A method to de-randomize the resampling test is also presented. The proposed methods can be readily applied to a broad range of problems, ranging from classical nonparametric statistics to modern machine learning. Specifically, we explore three applications: testing model calibration, regression curve evaluation, and validation of emulator models in simulation-based inference. We illustrate the superior performance of our method for these tasks, both in simulations as well as on real data. In particular, we apply our method to (1) assess the calibration of neural network models trained on the CIFAR-10 dataset, (2) compare regression functions for wind power generation across two different turbines, and (3) validate emulator models on benchmark examples with intractable posteriors and for generating synthetic `redshift' associated with galaxy images.

Conformal submersions are generalizations of Riemannian submersions where the differential of the submersion map is a conformal isometry when restricted to the horizontal distribution. Riemannian submersions have been instrumental in the construction of new Riemannian metrics from existing ones. Therefore, being generalizations of Riemannian submersions, conformal submersions are potential tools for constructing new examples of (special) Riemannian manifolds. A conformal submersion is said to be rigid if it reduces to a Riemannian submersion up to homothety. In this paper, we study curvature conditions that force conformal submersions to be rigid. Using the description, we construct maps from the algebra of stable functions on the $r$-th Moy-Prasad filtration quotient of hyperspecial parahorics to the depth-$r$ Bernstein center and use them to attach to each depth-$r$ irreducible representation $\pi$ an invariant $\theta(\pi)$, called the depth-$r$ Deligne-Lusztig parameter of $\pi$. Self-supervised learning (SSL) models usually require weeks of pre-training with dozens of high-end GPUs. These models typically have a multi-headed self-attention (MHSA) context encoder. However, MHSA takes quadratic time and space in the input length, contributing to the high pre-training cost. Linear-complexity alternatives to MHSA have been proposed. For instance, in supervised training, the SummaryMixing model is the first to outperform MHSA across multiple speech processing tasks. However, these cheaper alternatives have not been explored for SSL yet. This paper studies a linear-complexity context encoder for SSL for the first time. With better or equivalent performance for the downstream tasks of the MP3S benchmark, SummaryMixing reduces the pre-training time and peak VRAM of wav2vec 2.0 model by 18% and by 23%, respectively, leading to the pre-training of a 155M wav2vec 2.0 model finished within one week with 4 Tesla A100 GPUs. In the pursuit of understanding the population of stellar remnants within the Milky Way, we analyze the sample of $\sim 950$ microlensing events observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope between 2014 and 2019. In this study we focus on a sub-sample of nine microlensing events, selected based on their long timescales, small microlensing parallaxes and joint observations by the Gaia mission, to increase the probability that the chosen lenses are massive and the mass is measurable. Among the selected events we identify lensing black holes and neutron star candidates, with potential confirmation through forthcoming release of the Gaia time-series astrometry in 2026. Utilizing Bayesian analysis and Galactic models, along with the Gaia Data Release 3 proper motion data, four good candidates for dark remnants were identified: OGLE-2016-BLG-0293, OGLE-2018-BLG-0483, OGLE-2018-BLG-0662, and OGLE-2015-BLG-0149, with lens masses of $2.98^{+1.75}_{-1.28}~M_{\odot}$, $4.65^{+3.12}_{-2.08}~M_{\odot}$, $3.15^{+0.66}_{-0.64}~M_{\odot}$ and $1.4^{+0.75}_{-0.55}~M_{\odot}$, respectively. Notably, the first two candidates are expected to exhibit astrometric microlensing signals detectable by Gaia, offering the prospect of validating the lens masses. The methodologies developed in this work will be applied to the full Spitzer microlensing sample, populating and analyzing the time-scale ($t_{\rm E}$) vs. parallax ($\pi_{\rm E}$) diagram to derive constraints on the population of lenses in general and massive remnants in particular., Comment: submitted to ApJ

Unsupervised Anomaly Detection (UAD) methods rely on healthy data distributions to identify anomalies as outliers. In brain MRI, a common approach is reconstruction-based UAD, where generative models reconstruct healthy brain MRIs, and anomalies are detected as deviations between input and reconstruction. However, this method is sensitive to imperfect reconstructions, leading to false positives that impede the segmentation. To address this limitation, we construct multiple reconstructions with probabilistic diffusion models. We then analyze the resulting distribution of these reconstructions using the Mahalanobis distance to identify anomalies as outliers. By leveraging information about normal variations and covariance of individual pixels within this distribution, we effectively refine anomaly scoring, leading to improved segmentation. Our experimental results demonstrate substantial performance improvements across various data sets. Specifically, compared to relying solely on single reconstructions, our approach achieves relative improvements of 15.9%, 35.4%, 48.0%, and 4.7% in terms of AUPRC for the BRATS21, ATLAS, MSLUB and WMH data sets, respectively., Comment: Accepted for presentation at the MICCAI 2024 conference

46. Unveiling Scaling Laws in the Regulatory Functions of Reddit

Online platforms like Reddit, Wikipedia, and Facebook are integral to modern life, enabling content creation and sharing through posts, comments, and discussions. Despite their virtual and often anonymous nature, these platforms need rules and oversight to maintain a safe and productive environment. As these communities grow, a key question arises: how does the need for regulatory functions scale? Do larger groups require more regulatory actions and oversight per person, or can they manage with less? Our analysis of Reddit's regulatory functions reveals robust scaling relationships across different subreddits, suggesting universal patterns between community size and the amount of regulation needed. We found that the number of comments and moderator actions, such as comment removals, grew faster than the community size, with superlinear exponents of 1.12 and 1.18, respectively. However, bot-based rule enforcement did not keep pace with community growth, exhibiting a slightly sublinear exponent of 0.95. Further analysis of the residuals from these scaling behaviors identified a 'trade-off axis,' where one-way coordination mechanisms (bots and moderators) counteract two-way interactions (comments) and vice versa. Our findings suggest that a more proactive moderation approach, characterized by increased bot activity and moderator comment removals, tends to result in less user engagement under the scaling framework. Understanding these natural scaling patterns and interactions can help platform administrators and policymakers foster healthy online communities while mitigating harmful behaviors such as harassment, doxxing, and misinformation. Without proper regulation, these negative behaviors can proliferate and cause significant damage. Targeted interventions based on these insights are key to ensuring online platforms remain safe and beneficial spaces.

The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

The layered triangular lattice owing to $1:2$ order of $B$ and $B'$ sites in the triple perovskite $A_3 B B'_2$O$_9$ family provides an enticing domain for exploring the complex phenomena of quantum spin liquids (QSLs). We report a comprehensive investigation of the ground state properties of Sr$_3$CuTa$_2$O$_9$ that belongs to the above family, by employing magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) experiments down to the lowest temperature of 0.1~K. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility indicates that the spin-lattice is a nearly isotropic $S = 1/2$ triangular lattice. We illustrate the observation of a gapless QSL, in which conventional spin ordering or freezing effects are absent, even at temperatures more than two orders of magnitude smaller than the exchange energy ($J_{\rm CW}/k_{\rm B} \simeq -5.04$~K). Magnetic specific heat in zero-field follows a power law, $C_{\rm m} \sim T^\eta$, below 1.2~K with $\eta \approx 2/3$, which is consistent with a theoretical proposal of the presence of spinon Fermi surface. Below 1.2~K, the $\mu$SR relaxation rate shows no temperature dependence, suggesting persistent spin dynamics as expected for a QSL state. Delving deeper, we also analyze longitudinal field $\mu$SR spectra revealing strong dynamical correlations in the spin-disordered ground state. We investigate the flavor-specific properties of leptophilic dark matter in neutrino mass models, where dark matter signals are directly correlated with the neutrino oscillation data, providing complementary insights into the neutrino mass hierarchy and CP phases. Notably, this can be accomplished without introducing a flavor-specific portal to dark matter, imposing any new flavor symmetry, or involving flavon fields. As a case study, we analyze the correlation between the flavor-philic nature of dark matter and neutrino oscillation data in the type-II seesaw and Zee-Babu models, and extend this discussion to other neutrino mass models. We analyze the indirect signatures of such leptophilic dark matter, specifically examining the spectrum of the cosmic ray electron/positron flux resulting from the pair annihilation of dark matter in the Galactic halo, and explore correlated lepton-specific signals at collider experiments sensitive to neutrino oscillation data., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

50. Diphoton signals for the Georgi-Machacek scenario at the Large Hadron Collider

The diphoton channel for exploring the Georgi-Machacek (GM) scenario containing scalar triplets at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been identified as germane, and subjected to a detailed study. The scalar spectrum of the model, which imposes a custodial SU(2) on the potential, gets classified into a 5-plet, a 3-plet and two singlets under the custodial symmetry. While most attempts to probe or constrain the scenario at the LHC depend largely on signals of charged scalars, we point out that the custodial SU(2) singlet state H can have a substantial branching ratio (amounting to a few percent) into two photons. We carry out a detailed simulation of the resulting signal and the standard model backgrounds, obtaining the signal significance in different regions of the parameter space using the profile likelihood ratio method. Substantial regions of the GM parameter space is thus shown to be accessible to LHC studies, both at the high-luminosity run with $\int {\cal L} dt = 3000 fb^{-1}$, and also in Run-3 with $\int {\cal L} dt = 300 fb^{-1}$, even after folding in systematic errors. We have also demonstrated that a rather subtantial improvement in the signal significance is achieved by switching over from a cut-based analysis to one based on neural network., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables
