Abstract

"The 2013 Go Home vans marked a turning point in government-sponsored communication designed to demonstrate control and toughness on immigration. In this study, the authors explore the effects of this toughness: on policy, public debate, pro-migrant and anti-racist activism, and on the everyday lives of people in Britain. Bringing together an authorial team of eight respected social researchers, alongside the voices of community organisations, policy makers, migrants and citizens, and with an afterword by journalist Kiri Kankhwende, this is an important intervention in one of the most heated social issues of our time."

Abstract

Taking as a starting point the desire of many to locate the unfolding genocide in Gaza in the irrationality of its perpetrators — the Israeli state and/or its imperial backers — this article proposes instead to understand it as an extreme expression of the continuous violence necessary to maintain not only local settler colonial rule, but the global capitalist system as a whole. Building on the existing literature on settler colonialism and racial capitalism, and insisting on the ways that both should be understood not as discrete, self-contained objects of study, but as co-constitutive elements of the global order, this article attempts to illuminate the structural logics at play in Israel's latest and most brutal assault on Palestinian life. In doing so, the article emphasises Zionism's role in maintaining western imperialism at a crucial nodal point of the world economy and, in turn, the latter's commitment to guaranteeing its stability and dominance. The article resists, however, the urge to move from explaining current structures of domination to declaring them as final or unshakable. It therefore ends by proposing possible different tomorrows, through an engagement with the Palestinian revolutionary tradition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Capitalism appears to be endlessly in crisis, but without ever loosening its hold on our lives. New modes of racism and exclusion emerge, but the old ones never go away. We continue to struggle to live and survive in its wake but are unable, still now, to build commonality with each other. In this incisive book, Gargi Bhattacharyya revisits debates about racial capitalism and its violence through differentiation. Taking the four lenses of prisons, borders, debt and platforms, they reveal how this moment of capitalist crisis positions humans as expendable, but differentially so, in a process that remakes longstanding racialized hierarchies. Uncovering practices and techniques embedded in the shifting processes of accumulation and state power, the chapters illuminate how value is extracted from populations through non-wage routes and indebtedness. This engaging introduction to racial capitalism offers an interlocking and insightful analysis of capitalist renewal, essential for students and scholars interested in issues of race, racism and inequality. In this paper, we study the subconstituent algebras, also called as Terwilliger algebras, of association schemes that are obtained as the wreath product of one-class association schemes $K_n=H(1, n)$ for $n\ge 2$. We find that the $d$-class association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}} \wr ... \wr K_{n_{d}}$ formed by taking the wreath product of $K_{n_{i}}$ has the triple-regularity property. We determine the dimension of the Terwilliger algebra for the association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}}\wr ... \wr K_ {n_{d}}$. We give a description of the structure of the Terwilliger algebra for the wreath power $(K_n)^{\wr d}$ for $n \geq 2$ by studying its irreducible modules. In particular, we show that the Terwilliger algebra of $(K_n)^{\wr d}$ is isomorphic to $M_{d+1}(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_1(\mathbb{C})^{\oplus \frac12d(d+1)}$ for $n\ge3$, and $M_{d+1}(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_1(\mathbb{C})^{\oplus \frac12d(d-1)}$ for $n=2$., Comment: 27 pages

In July 2013, the UK government arranged for a van to drive through parts of London carrying the message ‘In the UK illegally? GO HOME or face arrest.’ The vans were short-lived, but they were part of an ongoing trend in government-sponsored communication designed to demonstrate control and toughness around immigration. This book explores the effects of such performances of toughness: on policy, on public debate, on pro-migrant and anti-racist activism, and on the everyday lives of people in Britain. This book both presents research findings, and provides insights into the practice of conducting research on such a charged and sensitive topic.Blending original research, theoretical analysis, and methodological reflections, the book addresses questions such as:Who gets to decide who ‘belongs’?How do anti-migrant sentiments relate to changing forms of racism?Are new divisions, and new solidarities, emerging in the light of current immigration politics? Written in a clear and engaging style, the book sets an agenda for a model of collaborative research between researchers, activists, and people on the ground.
