Abstract

We examined theoretically, experimentally and numerically the origin of the acoustothermal effect using a standing surface acoustic wave actuated sessile water droplet system. Despite a wealth of experimental studies and a few recent theoretical explorations, a profound understanding of the acoustothermal mechanism remains elusive. This study bridges the existing knowledge gap by pinpointing the fundamental causes of acoustothermal heating. Theory broadly applicable to any acoustofluidic system at arbitrary Reynolds numbers going beyond the regular perturbation analysis is presented. Relevant parameters responsible for the phenomenon are identified and an exact closed form expression delineating the underlining mechanism is presented. Furthermore, an analogy between the acoustothermal effect and electromagnetic heating is drawn, thereby deepening understanding of the acoustothermal process., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Active areas of research on chemical looping technologies for the conversion of CO2 to CO are contrasted and discussed, including current performance, methods for material design, and next steps in expanding their development. Generation of CO from CO2 is of interest in sustainable chemistry and engineering to convert anthropogenic CO2 emissions into feedstock for Fischer–Tropsch (FT), methanol to gasoline (MTG), gas-to-liquid (GTL), and other synthesis pathways for fuels and materials. Chemical looping strategies have been identified which not only produce CO, but also H2 from H2O and methane sources, supplying the other key component of syngas. Configurations of these chemical looping technologies into the materials economy potentially constitute sustainable carbon loop cycles for fuels as well as carbon sequestration into industrial and commercial materials. Major areas of research in CO2 conversion by chemical looping, collectively referred to here as CO2CL, including Solar-Thermal Chemical Looping (STCL), Reverse Water Gas Shift Chemical Looping (RWGS-CL), Chemical Looping Reforming (CLR), Super Dry Reforming (SDR), Autothermal Catalyst Assisted Chemical Looping (ACACL), and Reverse Boudouard Reforming (RBR) are discussed in terms of their process characteristics, historical development of oxygen carrier (OC) material, state of the art methods for material design, and future work needed to advance the scale-up of these technologies. This perspective centers around the non-methane utilizing processes for CO2CL, focusing on the phenomena of oxygen transfer between gas molecules and the oxygen carrier (OC). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. Degradable Poly(Catechin) Nanoparticles As A Versatile Therapeutic Agent

Abstract

Poly(catechin) (p(CAT)) nanoparticles (NPs), 173 +/- 4 nm was prepared as a therapeutic agent with hydrolytic degradability affording sustainable CAT release over 20 d at carcinogenic conditions, pH 5.5 and 37.5 degrees C. Cell viability studies on MC38 colon cancer cells revealed the anticancer potential of p(CAT) NPs with 691 mu g/mL IC50 value while being well-tolerated by nonmalignant CCD841 CoN colon cells at 72 h incubation-time. P(CAT) NPs showed effective antioxidant capacity with 241 +/- 7 and 456 +/- 54 mu g/mL of GA equivalency of total phenol content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) values and 1.19 +/- 0.8 mu mol/g Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity by 2,2'-Azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothioazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS(center dot+)) scavenging assay.

48. Unravelling The Origin Of Enhanced Electrochemical Performance In Cose2-Mose2 Interfaces

Abstract

Defect and interface engineering have been shown as effective strategies towards sustainable hydrogen production, but detailed descriptions of the origin of performance enhancements is not established. Here, we synthesize a model heterostructure interface, CoSe2-MoSe2/PEDOT, to unravel its bifunctional capability. Low eta(10) of -0.20 V for HER and 1.53 V for OER verified the electrocatalytic performance of this catalyst. We systematically reveal intrinsic point defects and lattice dislocations in these heterostructures. Atomic scale electron microscopy studies disclose presence of V-Se and Mo-Mo bond defects. Spectroscopic techniques are employed to show the altered electronic properties that promote surface oxidation due to the presence of defects. In contrast to MoSe2 or MoSe2/PEDOT, defect rich CoSe2-MoSe2/PEDOT showed accelerated reaction kinetics with much lower Tafel slopes. Essentially, generation of anion vacancies and metallic Mo-Mo bonds provide additional sites with improved adsorption properties of the reaction intermediates. This catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic stability upon cycling for both half-cell reactions.
