Cancer of the uterine cervix is one of the leading gynecological malignancies of developing nations including India. A 45-year-old female presented with menstrual irregularities and other nonspecific symptoms. After initial workup, she was diagnosed with carcinoma cervix, Stage IV A, while she was being planned to take up radical concomitant chemoradiotherapy, she developed widespread nodules over various sites over the body, which were histopathologically proven as metastatic lesions. She was treated with a palliative intent by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Only a few such cases have been reported in the literature with variable outcomes. These rare presentations should be thoroughly worked up and studied to know more about their biological behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carcinosarcoma (CS) also known as metaplastic carcinoma of the breast is a rare and aggressive type of malignancy with controversial origin. Currently, there are no standard treatment guidelines outlined, owing to the rarity of the disease, but according to the available literature, surgery followed by adjuvant radiation therapy has the greatest benefit. We are presenting two cases of CS of breast developing metastasis. One of the cases presented with lung metastasis during the course of follow-up and responded significantly to chemotherapy, and the other is currently receiving chemotherapy. Malignant tumors of anal margin and perianal skin are rare, which accounts for approximately 2%-3% of all anorectal malignancies. Because of the variable presentation and pathologic similarity to benign anal lesions, the diagnosis and treatment is often delayed. We report the case of a 54-year-old Indian male who presented with non-healing anal fistula which progressed to a large chronic ulcer and was later diagnosed as anaplastic large cell lymphoma of perianal skin. Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (PCALCL) of perianal area has been rarely reported, that too masquerading anal fistula is being reported for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neem (Azadiracta India) seed oil in appropriate amount when smeared on the surface of the hand showed excellent repellent action against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. When 1 ml of oil was spread on the hand, with an approximate area of 160 sq cm the percentage of alighting and blood fed mosquitoes in the experimental cages varied from 14 to 78 and 4 to 46 respectively. This percentage decreased to 6 to 18 and 0 to 16 respectively when the amount of oil applied was 1.5 ml. Only 0-4% of the mosquitoes alighted on the skin of which 2% only took the blood meal when 2 ml of the oil was used to cover the hand. In the control cages cent percent of the mosquitoes alighted and sucked blood. The repellent action was directly proportional to the hour of exposure to the oil. It was also observed that even after alighting on a oil- smeared skin a sizeable proportion of mosquitoes were not able to imbibe blood meal. Neem seed oil was non-toxic, non- irritating to skin.

A significant turning point in the search for environmentally friendly energy storage options is the switch from lithium-ion to sodium-ion batteries. This review highlights the potential of sodium-ion battery (NIB) technology to address the environmental and financial issues related to lithium-ion systems by thoroughly examining recent developments in NIB technology. It is noted that sodium is more abundant and less expensive than lithium, NIBs have several benefits that could drastically lower the total cost of energy storage systems. In addition, this study examines new findings in important fields including electrolyte compositions, electrode materials, and battery performances of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and NIBs. The article highlights advancements in anode and cathode materials, with a focus on improving energy density, cycle stability, and rate capability of both LIBs and NIBs. The review also covers the advances made in comprehending the electrochemical mechanisms and special difficulties associated with NIBs, such as material degradation and sodium ion diffusion. Future research directions are discussed, with an emphasis on enhancing the scalability and commercial viability of sodium-ion technology over lithium on Electric Grid. Objective: This study was performed to explore the perceptions of treatment utilization patterns and the risk of overdose of both opioid users and their peer educators in Kolkata, India., Methods: This study used a qualitative approach for data collection between September and December 2023. In-depth interviews (IDIs) of 20 opioid users from two authorized opioid substitution therapy (OST) centers (10 registered clients) and their respective field practice areas (10 unregistered clients) in Kolkata were conducted. Key informant interviews (KIIs) of six peer educators were also conducted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted; audio was recorded, transcribed, and translated for coding and analysis. An inductive thematic analysis was performed., Results: Six broad themes (individual knowledge, logistics, legal/administrative, treatment effectiveness, self-confidence of treatment, and poor knowledge about the antidote of opioid poisoning, i.e., naloxone) emerged from the data analysis of IDIs. Four broad themes (high-risk behavior, raising awareness, the benefits of OST, and poor knowledge about naloxone) emerged from the data analysis of KIIs. Both opioid users and their peer educators were aware of the dangers of opioid overdose. However, they lacked sufficient knowledge in recognizing and offering immediate assistance in instances of opioid overdose, including the administration of naloxone., Conclusion: The findings recognize the necessity of drawing and retaining opioid users in an efficient healthcare facility, such as OST centers, and providing them adequate training to identify and provide immediate assistance in cases of overdose, including naloxone administration. Objectives: The response to antipsychotic therapy is highly variable. Pharmacogenomic (PGx) factors play a major role in deciding the effectiveness and safety of antipsychotic drugs. A hybrid type 2 effectiveness-implementation research will be conducted to evaluate the clinical utility (safety and efficacy), cost-effectiveness, and facilitators and barriers in implementing PGx-assisted management compared to standard of care in patients with schizophrenia attending a tertiary care hospital in eastern India., Methods: In part 1, a randomized controlled trial will be conducted. Adult patients with schizophrenia will be randomized (2: 1) to receive PGx-assisted treatment (drug and regimen selection depending on the results of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes DRD2, HTR1A, HTR2C, ABCB1, CYP2D6, CYP3A5, and CYP1A2) or the standard of care. Serum drug levels will be measured. The patients will be followed up for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint is the difference in the Udvalg for Kliniske Undersøgelser Side-Effect Rating Scale score between the two arms. In part 2, the cost-effectiveness of PGx-assisted treatment will be evaluated. Introduction: India launched the COVID-19 vaccination drive on 16th January 2021 by vaccinating the adult population above 18 years of age. This was followed by the introduction of an additional precaution dose. As on 18th October 2022, 1,02,66,96,808 (1.02 Billion) first dose and 94, 95, 39,516 (949 Million) second doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered. However, when compared to the uptake of the primary doses, the precaution dose uptake lagged behind with only 21,75, 12,721 (217 million) doses administered. Even though, the uptake of the primary doses remained optimal, irrespective of different interventions by the Government of India, the uptake of the precaution dose remained poor. In this context, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare wanted to understand the facilitators and Barriers for precaution dose uptake among adults so that future immunization campaigns could address these issues., Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted to assess the facilitators and barriers for COVID-19 precaution dose uptake at community level across 6 different states in India. From each of the states, two districts with the highest and lowest rates of COVID-19 vaccine precaution dose uptake were selected. In each of these districts, 2 block Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), one with high and one with low uptake were identified. Within these block PHCs, a PHC field area with high and low precaution dose uptakes was identified. From the identified sites a minimum of four IDIs, four FGDs were conducted among the community members. KIIs of the State Immunization Officers, District Immunisation Officers, PHC Medical Officers, healthcare workers like Accredited Social Health Activist/Auxiliary Nurse Midwife were also conducted. The data was audio recorded and it was transcribed, translated and analysed using framework approach., Results: It was observed that rise in COVID-19 cases prompted the community to take the precaution dose, this along with the cost of hospitalization and the number of productive days being lost as a result of being infected resulted in vaccine uptake. The fear of non-availability of COVID-19 vaccines latter on also prompted people for vaccine uptake. While the barriers were, poor accessibility to vaccination centers, long hours of travel, poor road connectivity and lack of transportation facilities. However, the most prominent barriers observed across all study sites was that a sense of pandemic fatigue and complacency had developed both among the providers as well as the beneficiaries. Other barriers include differences in vaccination schedules and longer duration between the primary doses of some vaccines. Media was identified to be both a barrier and facilitator for Covid-19 Precaution dose uptake. Even though media played an important role in disseminating information in the beginning of the campaign, it was soon followed by the circulation of both misinformation and disinformation., Discussion: The study identified that dissemination of accurate information and community involvement at each stage of planning and implementation are crucial for the success of any campaign. Efforts should be constantly made to address and re-invent strategies that will be most suitable for the needs of the community. The response of cytoskeleton to mechanical cues plays a pivotal role in understanding several aspects of cellular growth, migration, and cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions under normal and diseased conditions. Finite element analysis (FEA) has become a powerful computational technique to study the response of cytoskeleton in the maintenance of overall cellular mechanics. With the revelation of role of external mechanical microenvironment on cell mechanics, FEA models have also been developed to simulate the effect of substrate stiffness on the mechanical properties of cancer cells. However, the models developed so far model cellular response under static mode, whereas in physiological condition, cells always experience dynamic loading conditions. To develop a more accurate model of cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions, this paper models the cytoskeleton and other parts of the cell by beam and solid elements respectively, assuming spherical morphology of the cell. The stiffness and roughness of extracellular matrix were varied. Furthermore, static and dynamic sinusoidal loads were applied through a flat plate indenter on the cell along with providing sinusoidal strain at the substrate. It is observed that due to axial loading, cell reaches a plastic region, and when the sinusoidal loading is added to the axial load, the cell experiences permanent deformation. Degradation of the cytoskeleton elements and a physiologically more relevant spherical cap shape of the cell were also considered during the analysis. Background: The importance of inhibiting the kinases of the DDR pathway for radiosensitizing cancer cells is well established. Cancer cells exploit these kinases for their survival, which leads to the development of resistance towards DNA damaging therapeutics., Objective: In this article, the focus is on targeting the key mediator of the DDR pathway, the ATM kinase. A new set of quinoline-3-carboxamides, as potential inhibitors of ATM, is reported., Methods: Quinoline-3-carboxamide derivatives were synthesized and cytotoxicity assay was performed to analyze the effect of molecules on different cancer cell lines like HCT116, MDA-MB-468, and MDA-MB-231., Results: Three of the synthesized compounds showed promising cytotoxicity towards a selected set of cancer cell lines. Western Blot analysis was also performed by pre-treating the cells with quercetin, a known ATM upregulator, by causing DNA double-strand breaks. SAR studies suggested the importance of the electron-donating nature of the R group for the molecule to be toxic. Finally, Western-Blot analysis confirmed the down-regulation of ATM in the cells. Additionally, the PTEN negative cell line, MDA-MB-468, was more sensitive towards the compounds in comparison with the PTEN positive cell line, MDA-MB-231. Cytotoxicity studies against 293T cells showed that the compounds were at least three times less toxic when compared with HCT116., Conclusion: In conclusion, these experiments will lay the groundwork for the evolution of potent and selective ATM inhibitors for the radio- and chemo-sensitization of cancer cells., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

Bragg gratings in etched polymer fibres and their unique properties and characteristics are discussed in this paper. Due to the change in material and mechanical properties of the polymer fibre through etching, Bragg gratings inscribed in such fibres show high reflectivity and enhanced intrinsic sensitivity towards strain, temperature, and pressure. The short-term and long-term stability of the gratings and the effect of hysteresis on the dynamic characteristics are also discussed. The unique properties and enhanced intrinsic sensitivity of etched polymer fibre Bragg grating are ideal for the development of high-sensitivity sensors for biomedical applications. To demonstrate their biomedical sensing capabilities, a high-sensitivity pressure transducer that operates in the blood pressure range, and a breathing rate monitoring device are developed and presented., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The present work demonstrates the C-S cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and thiols using nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) supported on reduced graphene oxide (Ni/RGO) as a heterogeneous catalyst. It is observed that the uniformly dispersed Ni NPs supported on RGO could exhibit excellent catalytic activity in C-S cross-coupling reactions and the catalytic application is generalized with diverse coupling partners. Although the electron-rich planar RGO surface helps in stabilizing the agglomeration-free Ni NPs, the catalytic process is found to occur involving Ni(II) species and the recovered catalyst containing both Ni(0)/Ni(II) species is equally efficient in recycle runs. A correlation of loading of Ni species, size of NPs and the intermediate Ni-related heterostructures formed during the catalytic process has been established for the first time, and found to be best in the C-S cross-coupling reaction for Ni(0) and Ni(II) NPs of the average sizes 11-12 nm and 4 nm, respectively.

Background & Objective: The current study aimed to perform an immunohistochemical analysis of patterns of apoptotic and cell proliferative related protein expression in different histological grades and immune phenotypes of malignant lymphomas and other lymphoproliferative disorders., Methods: This observational study was carried on 60lymph node biopsies of lymphoproliferative disorders. The biopsies were analyzed histologically and immunohistochemically., Results: A total of 60 lymph node biopsies were included in the study, of which 81.6% were of malignant lympho-proliferative lesions. The majority of the biopsies were B-cell (66%) and were grouped in the intermediate grade. Bax and BCL-2 protein expression was presented by percentage of immune positive neoplastic cells per 10fields and graded on a scale of 1 to4. A Bcl-2, Bax Protein Ratio (BBPR) was determined for each case by dividing the estimated Bcl-2 protein (percentage of Bcl-2 positive cells x Bcl-2 staining intensity) by the estimated Bax protein (percentage of Bax positive cells x Bax immunostaining intensity). The mean BBPR was found to be significantly higher in indolent lymphomas (2.64 ± 1.3) as compared to aggressive lymphomas (0.47 ± 0.9) (P<0.01). The expression of P53 and PCNA in 35 biopsies of Non Hodgkin Lymphomas (NHL) was found to increase from low to high grade tumors., Conclusions: A significant correlation was found between BBPR and predicted biological behavior of indolent and aggressive lymphomas. This indicates the important role of Bcl-2 and Bax in biological behavior of lymphomas. Background: Radiotherapy for head and neck cancers (HNC) causes alteration of oral mucosal barrier predisposing it to colonization and infection. Such infections often result in pain and burning sensation thus contributing to major morbidity., Objective: MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study was done on 50 patients of HNC treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Three samples (throat, urine, blood) were collected for fungal culture and sensitivity. These samples were collected before the start of radiotherapy, during radiotherapy (2nd and 6th week) and post radiotherapy (10th week)., Results: Only 49 patients were available for analysis. Fungal infection was found in 27/49 patients (55.10%) out of which Non-albicans Candida was isolated in 18/49 (36.73%) and Candida albicans in 9/49 (18.36%) cases. About 66.66% (18/27) isolates were sensitive to fluconazole. Maximum isolation of yeast was during 6th week of radiotherapy. All grade 4 and 71.42% of grade 3 oral mucositis were found in patients who were positive for fungal infection., Conclusion: The spectrum of fungal species in throat swab was: Non-albicans Candida and Candida albicans observed in 36.73% and 18.36% of patients respectively. Higher rate of fungal colonization and infection was found in patients with grade 3/4 oral mucositis. Calvarial Tuberculosis (CTB) is very rare form of TB. A 35 year old lady presented with a painless bony swelling over the right frontal area with an enlarged pre-auricular lymphnode. The CT revealed an expansile lytic lesion involving right frontal bone with minimal dural enhancement. In the presence of normal ESR, no past history of Tuberculosis, an expansile lytic lesion with intradural enhancement and previous inconclusive FNAC of pre-auricular lymphnode; she underwent surgical excision which revealed caseous granulation suggestive of TB.

Carcinoma tonsil with visceral metastasis is a rare entity, and cutaneous metastasis is seen even more infrequently. We present a case of a 55-year-old male with carcinoma tonsil having received concurrent chemo radiotherapy, presenting with multiple cutaneous metastases to the scalp and thigh.
