Paleoenvironmental reconstructions are critical to determine past climatological and hydrological conditions, such as sea-level rise (SLR) and extreme events including hurricanes and tsunamis. While established quantitative methods, such as principal components analysis and discriminant analysis, have effectively aided reconstructions by demarcating stratigraphic zones, they suffer from limitations due to the underlying assumptions (linearity, normality). Here, we introduce the machine learning technique anomaly detection for sedimentological reconstructions , capable of objectively pinpointing events (anomalies) in sediment cores. We tested this technique on five sediment cores extracted from Laguna Boquita, located along the Pacific coast of Mexico. Each core was subjected to high resolution loss-on-ignition, while the most representative core (core 1) was deemed the training core and scanned with a handheld XRF unit. In general, the sediment cores were dominated by thick units of peat and/or clay, and most cores contained sand layers. This reconstruction represents many environmental settings, ranging from a sandy terrestrial environment (∼6830- ∼ 6370 cal yr BP), organic-rich wetland (∼6370- ∼ 5170 cal yr BP), and clastic-rich backbarrier lagoon (∼5170 cal yr BP to present). The anomaly detection technique proved effective in marking many events, including marine transgression, evidence of SLR, transitions separating dominant depositional environments, and, perhaps most notably, a faded blue clay layer with minimal LOI variability that may represent a shift in backbarrier water level. The anomaly detection also registered anomalies when events were not visually distinct nor present in the LOI datasets (false positives), which represent sediment core sections that require further investigation with multiple proxies. However, anomaly detection failed to register anomalies in certain core sections that should have registered as events due to their distinct nature. The pollen assemblage in the clay section is dominated by TCT (mainly Taxodium), but it is replaced by Salix and wetland herbaceous taxa in the overlying peat. The Taxodium swamp was present at the site at least 150 years ago, and was replaced by Salix and other bottomland hardwood trees and wetland herbs due to a decrease in water level around AD 1940. While climate may have played a role, this hydrological change was most likely caused by the significant regional human activities during the last 100 years. Two thin clay layers (at 3–5 cm, 14–19 cm) embedded in the upper peat section were likely deposited from hurricanes Isaac (2012) and Betsy (1969): two events responsible for heavy rain and significant storm-surge flooding. The lack of multi-millennial multi-proxy paleoenvironmental reconstructions from Mexico's Pacific coast has limited our understanding of the regional response to climate change and sea-level rise. A 479-cm core covering the last 6900 years was extracted from Laguna Mitla in the state of Guerrero on Mexico's Pacific coast. Beginning as a Rhizophora-dominated salt pan ~6900 yr BP, at ~6500 yr BP, the site transitioned to a mangrove swamp dominated by Laguncularia, which lasted about 300 years. The beach barrier formed from ~6200 to 5200 yr BP, during which time, the site existed as an intermittently sheltered bay, the result of large, rapid changes in wave energy associated with the shifting barrier location and changes in stability. After the beach barrier was stabilized at ~5200 yr BP, water level at the coring site became a function of precipitation rather than sea level. Since that time, deposition has alternated between peat, laid down in a mangrove swamp, and clay intervals characterized by high concentrations of titanium and a predominantly regional pollen signal, representing open-water lagoon phases. Seven periods of increased water level, varying in duration, occurred during the backbarrier period, with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) likely the main climatic mechanism causing these periodic shifts in the paleo-precipitation levels. We suggest that the deepest water levels detected over the last ~3200 years correlate with periods of increased ENSO activity. The spatial distribution of tropical cyclone rainfall, which represents a significant percentage of total annual precipitation along Mexico's Pacific coast, may explain the inconsistencies between our record and paleoclimatic records from Mexico's interior, but more work is needed to test this hypothesis. Despite the large number of tsunamis that impact Mexico’s Pacific coast, stratigraphic studies focusing on geological impacts are scanty, making it difficult to assess the long-term risks for this vulnerable region. Surface samples and six cores were taken from Laguna Mitla near Acapulco to examine sedimentological and geochemical evidence for marine incursion events. Sediment cores collected from behind the beach barrier are dominated by intercalated layers of peat and inorganic sediments, mostly silt and clay, with little or no sand. Sand- and shell-rich clastic layers with high levels of sulfur, calcium, and strontium only occur adjacent to the relict beach ridge remnants near the center of the lagoon. With the exception of one thin fine sand layer, the absence of sand in the near-shore cores and the predominance of the terrigenous element titanium in the inorganic layers, evidently eroded from the surrounding hillslopes, suggests that these large-grained intervals do not represent episodic marine incursions, but rather were likely formed by the erosion and redeposition of older marine deposits derived from the beach ridge remnants when water levels were high. Reconstructing paleoenvironments on Mexico's Pacific coast is crucial to determine past climate conditions and natural hazard periodicities, vital for predicting future activities. Two sediment cores extracted from Laguna Nuxco, a coastal lagoon in Guerrero, were analyzed to provide a 4000-year paleoenvironmental record. Sediments dominated by shelly clay with low water and organic content, high carbonate content, low Ti/Ca ratio and the presence of Anomalocardia subrugosa suggest that a sheltered bay existed from ~4000–~1300 cal yr BP. During this stage, intermittent beach ridge gaps facilitated the deposition of storm-induced shell deposits, likely from tropical cyclones. Frequent thick shell hash deposition toward the top of the lithologic unit indicates heightened storminess likely from an increase in ENSO activity. An intense tropical cyclone, or perhaps multiple storms during an active period deposited a thick shell hash layer at ~1500 cal yr BP, which helped strengthen the beach ridge system and lead to the modern lagoon phase (~1300 cal yr BP to present), as suggested by the presence of Mytella sp. A more isolated lagoon with significant terrestrial sediment input was reflected by the predominance of lagoonal clay with decreased shell and carbonate contents, increased water and organic contents, and increased Ti/Ca ratio. A quiet period with lower tropical cyclone activity occurred from 1300 to 800 cal yr BP and from 300 cal yr BP to the present, as inferred from no or relatively few shell hash deposits, respectively. A period of hyperactivity occurred from 800 to 300 cal yr BP, as evidenced by seven shell hash layers. During the modern lagoon phase, shell hash deposition was not caused by marine inundation processes, but rather 'blowout' events driven by intense precipitation during heightened ENSO activity. An integrated view of wetland's evolution is currently poorly understood due to a lack of knowledge on long-term interactions of multiple ecological factors. Here, we present a cored palynological record covering the Holocene Epoch from a depressional wetland on Heixiazi Island (China). With the aid of principal component analysis and cluster analysis of the palynological data, the historical vegetation regime has been well reconstructed for wetlands on the island. With further assistance from the published data on local hydrology and regional East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) variations, the interactions of vegetation, hydrology, and climate in the island's wetlands have been thoroughly analyzed with correlation analysis of the three factors. The results indicate that a strong EASM generally led to a high water level in the wetlands from increased monsoonal precipitation, causing an increase in arboreal vegetation and a decrease in herbs. Alternatively, a weak EASM generally led to low water levels due to decreased monsoonal precipitation, causing a decrease in arboreal vegetation and an increase in herbs. The local vegetation regime during the early Holocene was marked by an increase in tree/herb ratio due to rising water levels under the influence of an increasingly strengthened EASM. Subsequently, a general decline of the tree/herb ratio occurred from a gradual decrease in water level during the mid and late Holocene when the EASM gradually retreated. The wettest stage marked by the highest water level and tree/herb ratio occurred 8.0–4.6 ka BP with the strongest EASM. The driest stage occurred during the last 0.4 ka BP, which was attributed to both the weakest EASM influence and anthropogenic disturbance. Our study provides an integrated view of the wetlands' ecological dynamics incorporating multi-factor interactions, which further sheds light on the EASM driving mechanisms on wetlands evolution during the Holocene Epoch. The Holocene hydrological regime on the Heixiazi Island is critical for understanding the evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) for the island's climate-sensitive location on the northern fringe of the EASM domain. In this paper, a marsh depression on the central island was selected to reconstruct the locally hydrological variation and to discuss its indications for the Holocene EASM evolution. This work is based on multi-proxy (magnetic susceptibility, grain size, loss-on-ignition, and carbonate content) analyses of 22 modern sedimentary samples with a water-level gradient of 0–66 cm and 100 cored sedimentary samples covering last ~ 9.0 ka BP. The proxies' hydrological significance was previously interpreted by the 22 modern samples using linear regression equations to construct their relationships to water-level changes. Among these proxies, the magnetic susceptibility, carbonate content, as well as the Md and sand fraction of grain size exhibit high-level relationships against the water-level changes with R2 > 0.6. Thus, these four proxies' linear-regression equations were selected and used on the 100 cored samples, and the Holocene water-level changes in the studied depression were quantitatively reconstructed. It shows that two relatively high water-level stages with strengthened EASM occurred during 8.0–4.5 ka BP and 3.0–1.4 ka BP, which were alternated by three low water-level stages with declined EASM during ~ 9.0–8.0 ka BP, 4.5–3.0 ka BP, and 1.4–0 ka BP, respectively. Among these fluctuations, the highest water-level stage with most strengthened EASM which is defined as the Holocene Monsoon Maximum occurred during 6.4–4.5 ka BP. Such a new evolution pattern of the EASM can be further supported by a large variety of records from monsoon-margin regions. We suggest the Holocene EASM evolution was generally associated with the thermal conditions in both the inner Eurasia landmass and the West Pacific Ocean, with an exception of the weak EASM before 8.0 ka BP due to the enhanced Siberia High with the dominance of the Eurasia ice sheet in the early Holocene. Sand layers deposited in coastal backbarrier lakes and marshes have been taken as indicators of overwash processes generated by hurricane landfalls, but sand layers discovered in sediments from non-backbarrier estuarine settings have not been as thoroughly investigated. Sedimentological and diatom analyses of a 44-cm core (WB 08-04) taken from a seep forest on the north shore of Weeks Bay in southern Alabama contains an 8-cm-thick sand layer embedded in dark gray peat. As an aid to determining the provenance of the sand layer, diatoms were also analyzed from eight surface samples taken from five nearby environments representing different salinity conditions. The diatom assemblage in the sand layer is dominated by acidophilous (Eunotia spp., Frustulia krammeri) and freshwater (Pinnularia neomajor, Pinnularia latevittata) species, suggesting that they were transported by fluvial processes from the acidic and freshwater bogs above the banks of Fish River. The sand layer also contains small percentages of brackish and marine diatoms (Tryblionella marginulata, Planothidium delicatulum), suggesting that incursion of seawater and brackish water from Weeks Bay and Mobile Bay also played a role in its deposition. It is inferred that the sand layer was deposited by a hurricane that brought both intense precipitation to coastal Alabama and a storm surge into Weeks Bay. Heavy rainfall caused overbank flooding of Fish River, which transported sand from the river banks and diatoms from nearby bogs to the coring site. Concurrently, storm surge waters also deposited marine and brackish diatoms at the site. Historical records suggest that the Bernard Romans' Gulf Coast Hurricane in AD 1772 may have been responsible for the flooding that resulted in the deposition of the sand layer. A comprehensive and integrative view of East Asian monsoon evolution during the Holocene is still under debate, and additional high-resolution proxy records from climatically sensitive locations are requisite to solve this complex issue. In this paper, we present three well-dated mud/peat cores from a paleo-pingo depression in the Sanjiang Plain, a climatically sensitive region to monsoon variation, to reveal the paleoenvironmental history of the wetland and discuss the regional impacts from monsoon evolution. A paleolake developed in the study area before 5.5 ka BP, and a peatland initiated thereafter consequent upon the gradual shrinking of the paleolake. This transition lasted until 4.5 ka BP, when the paleolake changed entirely to a wetland. Considering the prevalent monsoon climate in the Sanjiang Plain, we suggest that the lake-to-wetland transition from 5.5 to 4.5 ka BP indicates a rapid decline of the East Asian summer monsoon in addition to autogenic basin infilling processes. Such a remarkable monsoon weakening event has been documented across northern China, and we associate this with ocean–atmosphere interactions throughout low-latitude regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hurricanes play an important role in shaping the coast of Louisiana. Although the sedimentary signatures of hurricane deposits have been documented in several different coastal environments along the northern Gulf coast, no studies have as yet documented the signatures in wetlands adjacent to large, inland brackish water bodies. In this paper we present results of a case study documenting the distribution and characteristics of storm surge deposits related to Hurricane Isaac (2012) in a wetland on the western shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana. Hurricane Isaac, a category1 storm, made landfall near the mouth of the Mississippi River on August 28, 2012. Due to its large size and slow movement, Isaac generated strong easterly winds across Lake Pontchartrain, producing a large storm surge along the west shore of the lake and unprecedented flooding in the surrounding lowlands. Loss-on-ignition, XRF, radioisotopic, and grain-size analyses conducted on sediment cores and surface samples from the area identify two distinct sedimentary signatures for the Hurricane Isaac deposits. Near the lake shore the signature is characterized by a laminated silty sand with a geochemical profile closely resembling that of lake bed material. Storm deposits located in a brackish swamp ~ 1km inland consist of a dark, low-organic mud with low concentrations of terrestrial metals and elevated concentrations of Br, S, and Cl. Differences in the storm signal are explained by the differing effect of topographical features on the depositional and transportation processes occurring at the two sites. Utilizing the geochemical/compositional signatures as a hurricane-generated storm surge proxy indicates the possible occurrence of a similar event predating the historical record. The northern Gulf of Mexico shoreline is rapidly retreating, and coastal features of the abandoned Mississippi River delta complexes are eroding and subsiding. Bay Champagne is located in the Caminada-Moreau headland, a region located west of the currently active delta that has one of the highest rates of retreat and land loss globally. As a result, the shoreline at Bay Champagne has retreated more than two kilometers in the past 130 years, causing a gradual transition from a stable, circular freshwater lake to a frequently disturbed, semi-circular backbarrier lagoon. Analyses of clastic layers in a series of sediment cores collected at this site over the past decade indicate the lake was less perturbed in the past and has become increasingly more sensitive to marine incursion events caused by tropical cyclones as the shoreline retreated. Geochemical and pollen analyses of the cores also reveal profound changes in environmental and chemical conditions at Bay Champagne over the past century. Through relating stratigraphy to spatial changes observed from satellite imagery, this study establishes a timeline of the transition of Bay Champagne from an inland lake to a backbarrier environment, and demonstrated that these changes have not occurred at a constant rate. These results provide a case-study of changing local environmental conditions in response to rapid shoreline retreat, and therefore serve as a model for future coastal changes for Louisiana and other Gulf coastal areas. To understand the geological processes induced by tropical cyclones, geochemical and sedimentological analyses were performed on a 3 m sediment core (basal 14C date of 940 +/- 50 years BP) extracted from a marsh adjacent to a backbarrier lake along Louisiana's Gulf of Mexico coast (USA). This study was conducted in order to identify the geologic changes within a subsiding coastal region in the light of coastal recession and past hurricane activity. Previous studies show that Bay Champagne, a semi-circular lake near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, is subjected to subsidence rates between 1.0 and 1.2 cm year-1, the highest rate of retreat within the entire northern Gulf of Mexico. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses, employed to generate lithological and geochemical core profiles, identified three distinct sand layers measuring up to 50 cm in thickness deposited by recent hurricanes. LOI shows large decreases in water, organic, and carbonate contents, indicating the occurrence of marine inundation. Within each marine incursion layer terrestrial elemental concentrations as determined by XRF display large depletions. Grain size analysis of a portion of the core (30-86 cm) indicates the presence of two series of sequential high-energy storm deposits followed by intense fluvial flooding within Bay Champagne. To understand the geological processes induced by tropical cyclones, geochemical and sedimentological analyses were performed on a 3 m sediment core (basal 14C date of 940 +/− 50 years BP) extracted from a marsh adjacent to a backbarrier lake along Louisiana's Gulf of Mexico coast (USA). This study was conducted in order to identify the geologic changes within a subsiding coastal region in the light of coastal recession and past hurricane activity. Previous studies show that Bay Champagne, a semi-circular lake near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, is subjected to subsidence rates between 1.0 and 1.2 cm year−1, the highest rate of retreat within the entire northern Gulf of Mexico. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses, employed to generate lithological and geochemical core profiles, identified three distinct sand layers measuring up to 50 cm in thickness deposited by recent hurricanes. LOI shows large decreases in water, organic, and carbonate contents, indicating the occurrence of marine inundation. Within each marine incursion layer terrestrial elemental concentrations as determined by XRF display large depletions. Grain size analysis of a portion of the core (30-86 cm) indicates the presence of two series of sequential high-energy storm deposits followed by intense fluvial flooding within Bay Champagne.
