2. Avoiding singularities in Lorentzian-Euclidean black holes: the role of atemporality

Abstract

We investigate a Schwarzschild metric exhibiting a signature change across the event horizon, which gives rise to what we term a Lorentzian-Euclidean black hole. The resulting geometry is regularized by employing the Hadamard partie finie technique, which allows us to prove that the metric represents a solution of vacuum Einstein equations. In this framework, we introduce the concept of atemporality as the dynamical mechanism responsible for the transition from a regime with a real-valued time variable to a new one featuring an imaginary time. We show that this mechanism prevents the occurrence of the singularity and, by means of the regularized Kretschmann invariant, we discuss in which terms atemporality can be considered as the characteristic feature of this black hole., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We consider the following variants of the classical minimum dominating set problem in graphs: locating-dominating set, locating total-dominating set and open locating-dominating set. All these problems are known to be hard for general graphs. A typical line of attack, therefore, is to either determine the minimum cardinalities of such sets in general or to establish bounds on these minimum cardinalities in special graph classes. In this paper, we study the minimum cardinalities of these variants of the dominating set under a graph operation defined by Mycielski in~\cite{Mycielski1955} and is called the Mycielski construction. We provide some general lower and upper bounds on the minimum sizes of the studied sets under the Mycielski construction. We apply the Mycielski construction to stars, paths and cycles in particular, and provide lower and upper bounds on the minimum cardinalities of such sets in these graph classes. Our results either improve or attain the general known upper bounds.

Abstract

In this review we focus on the main cosmological implications of the Group Field Theory approach, according to which an effective continuum macroscopic dynamics can be extracted from the underlying formalism for quantum gravity. Within this picture what counts is the collective behaviour of a large number of quanta of geometry. The resulting state is a condensate-like structure made of "pre-geometric" excitations of the Group Field Theory field over a no-space vacuum. Starting from the kinematics and dynamics, we offer an overview of the way in which Group Field Theory condensate cosmology treats solutions for the homogeneous and isotropic universe. These solutions including a bounce, share with other quantum cosmological approaches the resolution of the singularity characterizing general relativity. Contrary to what is usually done in quantum cosmology, in GFT cosmology no preliminary symmetry reduction is needed for this purpose. In this article we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a circular matrix $A$ to have circulant contraction minors in terms of circuits in a digraph associated with $A$. 28. On dominating set polyhedra of circular interval graphs

Abstract

Clique-node and closed neighborhood matrices of circular interval graphs are circular matrices. The stable set polytope and the dominating set polytope on these graphs are therefore closely related to the set packing polytope and the set covering polyhedron on circular matrices. Eisenbrand et al. take advantage of this relationship to propose a complete linear description of the stable set polytope on circular interval graphs. In this paper we follow similar ideas to obtain a complete description of the dominating set polytope on the same class of graphs. As in the packing case, our results are established for a larger class of covering polyhedra of the form Q*(A,b):= conv{x \in \Z^n_+: Ax >= b}, with A a circular matrix and b an integer vector. These results also provide linear descriptions of polyhedra associated with several variantsof the dominating set problem on circular interval graphs., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The subject of this work is the study of $\LS_+$-perfect graphs defined as those graphs $G$ for which the stable set polytope $\stab(G)$ is achieved in one iteration of Lov\'asz-Schrijver PSD-operator $\LS_+$, applied to its edge relaxation $\estab(G)$. In particular, we look for a polyhedral relaxation of $\stab(G)$ that coincides with $\LS_+(\estab(G))$ and $\stab(G)$ if and only if $G$ is $\LS_+$-perfect. An according conjecture has been recently formulated ($\LS_+$-Perfect Graph Conjecture); here we verify it for the well-studied class of claw-free graphs.

Abstract

CCDC78 was identified as a novel candidate gene for autosomal dominant centronuclear myopathy-4 (CNM4) approximately ten years ago. However, to date, only one family has been described, and the function of CCDC78 remains unclear. Here, we analyze for the first time a family harboring a CCDC78 nonsense mutation to better understand the role of CCDC78 in muscle. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive histopathological analysis on muscle biopsies, including immunofluorescent assays to detect multiple sarcoplasmic proteins. We examined CCDC78 transcripts and protein using WB in CCDC78-mutated muscle tissue; these analyses were also performed on muscle, lymphocytes, and fibroblasts from healthy subjects. Subsequently, we conducted RT-qPCR and transcriptome profiling through RNA-seq to evaluate changes in gene expression associated with CCDC78 dysfunction in muscle. Lastly, coimmunoprecipitation (Co-Ip) assays and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) studies were carried out on extracted muscle proteins from both healthy and mutated subjects. Results: The histopathological features in muscle showed novel histological hallmarks, which included areas of dilated and swollen sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). We provided evidence of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), identified the presence of novel CCDC78 transcripts in muscle and lymphocytes, and identified 1035 muscular differentially expressed genes, including several involved in the SR. Through the Co-Ip assays and LC-MS/MS studies, we demonstrated that CCDC78 interacts with two key SR proteins: SERCA1 and CASQ1. We also observed interactions with MYH1, ACTN2, and ACTA1. Conclusions: Our findings provide insight, for the first time, into the interactors and possible role of CCDC78 in skeletal muscle, locating the protein in the SR. Furthermore, our data expand on the phenotype previously associated with CCDC78 mutations, indicating potential histopathological hallmarks of the disease in human muscle. Abstract

In line with European trends, since 2023 Lombardy (Northern Italy) is experiencing a resurgence of measles and an increased number of reported cases of fever and rash. Measles discarded cases observed in our region within the context of measles and rubella surveillance from the first few months of 2024 (N = 30) were investigated for parvovirus B19 (B19V) and other rash‐associated viruses. Thirteen cases tested positive for B19V DNA, representing a significant increase from previous years (on average 3 cases per year, p < 0.001) and ~40% of all B19V DNA‐positive patients we detected since 2017. In 2024, B19V DNA‐positive subjects spanned all ages, and the virus was predominant among adolescents and adults (84.6%). Two B19V infected patients were hospitalised, and likely cross‐reacting anti‐measles virus IgM were found in both. Our data align with the recent reports from the ECDC and various European countries, which are experiencing a surge in B19V infections, and underline the importance of comprehensive measles and rubella surveillance systems that can adapt to changing epidemiological trends.
