Abstract Coal gangue (CG) is an industrial solid waste produced by coal mining and separation that is considered to have a significant effect on the soil or water environment when exposed to the air, exacerbating ecological pollution. The comprehensive utilization of CG has always been a difficult problem due to the complex mineralogical characteristics. Producing concrete aggregates with CG is an effective strategy for utilising CG resources synthetically. This work studied the mineralogical characteristics of CG discharged from a coal mine in Guizhou Province, China, and the feasibility of producing concrete coarse aggregate by using CG particles. The results indicated that some CGs were mainly composed of coal particles, whereas others were mainly composed of noncoal particles. Based on their apparent characteristics, texture, and cross-sectional characteristics, the CG samples at this sampling point could be divided into 8 categories, and the mass ratio suitable for concrete aggregate production was less than 50%. The average pore size of CG was 5.5 nm smaller than that of the industrial (IS) aggregate, but its porosity and total pore area were 2.31% and 4.5 m2/g greater than those of the IS aggregate, respectively. CG aggregate concrete achieved a compressive grade of C40 at the appropriate mix ratio, but the mechanical properties of CG aggregate concrete were lower than those of IS aggregate concrete. The compressive strength of the concrete with the addition of coarse aggregate decreased by 17.26% at 7 days (7 d) of curing and 29.16% at 28 days (28 d) of curing compared with that of the concrete with the addition of the IS coarse aggregate. In addition, roasting at 500 °C for 2 h could increase the microhardness of this CG 40.06% higher than that without roasting. The separation of raw CG was a prerequisite for the preparation of concrete aggregate with CG, and also a direction to realize the comprehensive utilization of CG resources efficiently. Moreover, the roasting modification of this CG was an effective way to improve the mechanical performance of CG particles as concrete aggregates.

Summary: Background: To date, comprehensive data on the distribution of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the most prevalent comorbidity in diabetes, among Chinese adults with diabetes is lacking. Additionally, research gaps exist in understanding the association between CKD and cardiovascular health (CVH), an integrated indicator of lifestyle and metabolic control, within a nationwide sample of Chinese adults with diabetes. Methods: A nationally community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2018–2020. 58,560 residents diagnosed with diabetes aged 18–74 years nationwide were invited to participate, and 52,000 participants with complete CKD data were included in this study. Grass carp was an important economic fish for freshwater aquaculture. The exploring and utilization of high-quality grass carp germplasm resources were important for ensuring a domestic supply of high-quality aquatic protein. However, natural grass carp populations in China were facing severe threats because of the effects of frequent human activities, water environment damage, overfishing, etc. Against this background, high-quality grass carp germplasm resources were the foundation for the healthy and sustainable development of the grass carp aquaculture industry, so systematic collection, preservation, identification, evaluation, protection, and utilization of them carry great strategic importance. This paper summarizes major research results of grass carp in morphology, cytogenetics, molecular population genetics, etc. It not only introduced genetic improvement techniques such as gynogenesis, hybrid breeding, and polyploid breeding, but also discussed the existing research on the protection measures of grass carp germplasm resources. On this basis, the paper proposed new methods to improve the protection of grass carp germplasm and create improved varieties, which could provide high-quality resources for the sustainable development of the grass carp industry.

The phase equilibria of the Cu–Cr–Ag–Y and Cu–Cr–Ag–Zr systems at 600 and 700 °C with a fixed Y and Zr contents of 5.0 at.% were extrapolated by CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method based on the thermodynamic parameters for the constitutive binary and ternary systems. Twelve Cu–Cr–Ag–Y and six Cu–Cr–Ag–Zr alloys were designed in different phase regions of extrapolated isothermal sections. The phases, phase compositions and microstructures of alloys were experimentally investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). No quaternary phase was found. The solubilities of the solid solution phases and intermediate compounds were measured. The solidified sequences and microstructures of the Cu–Cr–Ag–X (X = Y, Zr) as-cast alloys were experimentally investigated as well as simulated by Scheil model. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental data, which indicates the accuracy of thermodynamic databases of the Cu–Cr–Ag–X (X = Y, Zr) systems. The present work lays an important foundation for establishing the thermodynamic database of multicomponent Cu alloys.

Abstract Lightweight thin-walled parts are widely used in the aviation and aerospace industries, and with the further increase in the complexity of their features, the traditional manufacturing process can no longer fully meet the high requirements of industrial component manufacturing. In this work, thin-walled parts are processed by Laser based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M), and the effects of process parameters on residual stress, hardness, mechanical properties and microstructure of thin-walled parts are systematically investigated. The simulation results show that the maximum equivalent residual stresses are distributed in the combination of the solid and the substrate, and the minimum equivalent residual stresses are mainly distributed in the top two ends and the middle part of the solid, and the stress distribution is symmetrical. In addition, the maximum equivalent residual stress increases with the increase of laser power, and decreases with the increase of scanning spacing or scanning speed. The experimental results show that with the increase of laser energy density, the tensile strength and yield strength of thin-walled parts show a tendency of increasing first and then decreasing. Finally, high-quality thin-walled parts were successfully fabricated by the optimized process parameters, and their tensile and yield strengths were increased by 6.1% and 15.9%, respectively.

Abstract Bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) affect bone homeostasis, but the mechanism remains unclear. Here, we showed that exercise inhibited PCNA clamp-associated factor (PCLAF) secretion from the bone marrow macrophages to inhibit BMAds senescence and thus alleviated skeletal aging. The genetic deletion of PCLAF in macrophages inhibited BMAds senescence and delayed skeletal aging. In contrast, the transplantation of PCLAF-mediated senescent BMAds into the bone marrow of healthy mice suppressed bone turnover. Mechanistically, PCLAF bound to the ADGRL2 receptor to inhibit AKT/mTOR signaling that triggered BMAds senescence and subsequently spread senescence among osteogenic and osteoclastic cells. Of note, we developed a PCLAF-neutralizing antibody and showed its therapeutic effects on skeletal health in old mice. Together, these findings identify PCLAF as an inducer of BMAds senescence and provide a promising way to treat age-related osteoporosis.

The Cu–Cr alloys with magnesium and yttrium exhibit appealing high-strength and high-conductivity (HSHC) characteristics. Anticipated contributions to the design of HSHC copper alloys include new insights from understanding the phase equilibria, solidified microstructure, and thermodynamics of the Cu–Cr–X (X = Mg, Y) systems. Five Cu–Cr–Y alloys and three Cu–Cr–Mg alloys were melted through arc melting and powder metallurgy, respectively. An analysis was conducted on the primary phases and solidification path of the as-cast Cu–Cr–Y alloys. Five three-phase regions in the Cu–Cr–Y system and three in the Cu–Cr–Mg system at the isothermal sections of 673 K were identified using XRD and EPMA. No ternary compound was discovered among either of these systems. The agreement between the experimental data and the calculated isothermal sections and liquidus projection derived from the thermodynamic description of the binary systems is quite good. The investigation on phase equilibria in Cu–Cr–X (X = Mg, Y) systems in this study helps in developing the thermodynamic database for multi-component copper alloys.

Abstract Background Severe burns may alter the stability of the intestinal flora and affect the patient’s recovery process. Understanding the characteristics of the gut microbiota in the acute phase of burns and their association with phenotype can help to accurately assess the progression of the disease and identify potential microbiota markers. Methods We established mouse models of partial thickness deep III degree burns and collected faecal samples for 16 S rRNA amplification and high throughput sequencing at two time points in the acute phase for independent bioinformatic analysis. Results We analysed the sequencing results using alpha diversity, beta diversity and machine learning methods. At both time points, 4 and 6 h after burning, the Firmicutes phylum content decreased and the content of the Bacteroidetes phylum content increased, showing a significant decrease in the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio compared to the control group. Nine bacterial genera changed significantly during the acute phase and occupied the top six positions in the Random Forest significance ranking. Clustering results also clearly showed that there was a clear boundary between the communities of burned and control mice. Functional analyses showed that during the acute phase of burn, gut bacteria increased lipoic acid metabolism, seleno-compound metabolism, TCA cycling, and carbon fixation, while decreasing galactose metabolism and triglyceride metabolism. Based on the abundance characteristics of the six significantly different bacterial genera, both the XGboost and Random Forest models were able to discriminate between the burn and control groups with 100% accuracy, while both the Random Forest and Support Vector Machine models were able to classify samples from the 4-hour and 6-hour burn groups with 86.7% accuracy. Conclusions Our study shows an increase in gut microbiota diversity in the acute phase of deep burn injury, rather than a decrease as is commonly believed. Severe burns result in a severe imbalance of the gut flora, with a decrease in probiotics and an increase in microorganisms that trigger inflammation and cognitive deficits, and multiple pathways of metabolism and substance synthesis are affected. Simple machine learning model testing suggests several bacterial genera as potential biomarkers of severe burn phenotypes.

Fungi polysaccharides are nutraceutical-rich compounds with bioactive properties, offering promising applications in food formulation. This study examined the non-covalent complexation of commercial polysaccharides derived from the fruiting bodies of Auricularia auricula-judae (AA) and Ganoderma lucidum (GL) and soy protein isolate to enhance emulsifying properties. Complexes were examined across protein-to-polysaccharide ratios (0:1 to 1:0), pH levels (3 to 7), and heat treatment conditions. Results indicated a maximum insoluble association at pH 4 for both SPI-AAP and SPI-GLP complexes, with SPI-AAP complexes remaining soluble at pH 3, while SPI-GLP complexes exhibited insolubility. Heat treatment had a limited effect on electrostatically driven complexation but resulted in larger particles through a protein-denaturation-induced increase of hydrophobic interactions. In terms of emulsifying properties, individual GLPs demonstrated superior performance compared to individual AAPs. The GLPs engaged in competitive adsorption at the oil–water interface alongside SPI, resulting in larger emulsion droplet sizes compared to either component alone. The association of either AAPs or GLPs with SPI enhanced the emulsion stability against coalescence and Ostwald ripening. Commercial fungal polysaccharides demonstrate substantial potential for incorporation into manufactured food products, particularly in colloidal formulations.

Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns utilizing advanced composites, including fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) FRP, and engineered cementitious composite (ECC) has attracted extensive efforts for decades. Remarkable achievements have been made in understanding the performance of the retrofitted RC columns that failed in the strengthened area. However, localized strengthening may force failure to shift outside the retrofitted zone, and these cases are rarely reported in literature. This paper focuses on the seismic performance of shear-critical RC columns that failed outside the strengthened zone. The main test parameters considered are the axial compression force (ACF) ratio and the strengthening materials used (ECC, carbon FRP (CFRP)-ECC, or PET-ECC). The results indicate that the failure mode and failure zone depend on the strengthening conditions. Weak strengthening (ECC only) will not result in a shift of the failure zone but strong retrofitting combinations do (CFRP-ECC and PET-ECC). Although the shear failure shifted to the unstrengthened zone, strengthening can still significantly improve ductility, energy-dissipation capacity and stiffness. A larger ACF can change the failure modes from shear to flexural or from shear-flexural to shear-compression. Shear strength models with and without considering the ductility-based reduction effects are evaluated.

Disease-resistant grass carp (DR-GGC) was obtained by backcrossing gynogenetic grass carp (GGC, 2n = 48, female) with common grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus [GC], 2n = 48, male). The genetic constitution and the potential mutation associated with growth dominance in DR-GGC were analyzed by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), whole-genome resequencing (WGRS) and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). The GISH results showed partial translocations and deletions in the chromosomes of DR-GGC compared with GC. The WGRS results demonstrated that there were numerous genetic variations between DR-GGC and its parents, among which DR-GGC had the highest genomic heterozygosity and GGC had the highest genomic purity. The RNA-seq results revealed that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly enriched in cellular processes and immune pathways in DR-GGC and GGC compared with GC. Meanwhile, the combined analysis of WGRS and RNA-seq identified DEGs with overlapping mutation loci in DR-GGC and GGC compared with GC. These DEGs were significantly enriched in the pathways of growth, metabolism, and immunity, including cellular metabolism, biosynthesis, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and extra cellular matrix (ECM) receptor interactions. These results provide a genetic basis for exploring the better growth characteristics and disease resistance of DR-GGC than GC, valuable information on the genetic breeding for grass carp, and a further understanding of the genetic characteristics of gynogenetic individuals.

Combined with the current Internet of Things (IoT) technology booming, the realization of intelligent construction has become the mainstream direction of today's tunnel construction. This design is mainly realized by combining IOT communication technology, sensor technology, and microcontroller technology. STM32 microcontroller acts as the system's central processing unit and receives real-time information on gas concentration, smoke concentration, pipe wall pressure, and water level collected by various sensors, then displays the data on the LED display after data processing. When the environmental data exceeds the standard, it will automatically drive and adjust the water pumps and fans and simultaneously move the WiFi module to remotely send the data to the mobile phone APP through the Internet cloud server. After actual testing, the system can meet the design requirements and further improve the safety and convenience of tunnel construction.

The X-band medium distance microwave wireless power transmission (MWPT) system based on multilayer rectifier diode design is demonstrated in this paper. In order to pursuit highest rectification efficiency, the harmonic suppression rectifying circuit is proposed, which can acquire more than 60% rectification efficiency at the working frequency of 10 GHz. For the sake of longer distance, the Cassegrain antenna with an aperture of 1.6 m and the receiving planar array antenna with an area of 2 m × 2 m for the novel applications are designed. In the interest of improving the effective receiving area, the microwave rectifying antenna adopts the layered design of the receiving array antenna and the microwave rectifying circuit. Finally, this X-band medium distance MWPT system based on multilayer rectifier diode can achieve 400 W DC power with 10% RF-DC conversion efficiency for the distance of 70 m. The MWPT system can been applied in medium to long distance MWPT system, such as charging of various sensors, wireless power supplying and so on.

β-AlFeSi is one of the most common and most damaging intermetallics in aluminum alloys containing silicon. The study of its growth behavior is crucial for alloy design. In this work, Al-8.1Si–5Fe and Al–13Si–3Fe alloys were cast to study the growth of β-AlFeSi. The skirt like β-AlFeSi clusters formed by splitting were discovered, and this phenomenon was found to be mainly caused by thermal stress. By micro to atomic scale electron microscopy studies, a layer-by-layer growth mode along the (001) crystal plane was proposed for β-AlFeSi. In addition, it is found that β-AlFeSi grows along the heat flow, and the preferred growth orientation is determined to be [100]/[010]. Other characteristics of β growth, such as stacking faults and inducing formation of pores, were also reported and discussed.

Abstract The pore structure of coal plays a key role in controlling the storage and migration of CH4/N2. The pore structure of coal is an important indicator to measure the gas extraction capability and the gas displacement effect of N2 injection. The deformation characteristic of coal during adsorption–desorption of CH4/N2 is an important factor affecting CH4 pumpability and N2 injectability. The pore structure characteristics of low-permeability coal were obtained by fluid intrusion method and photoelectric radiation technology. The multistage and connectivity of coal pores were analyzed. Subsequently, a simultaneous test experiment of CH4/N2 adsorption–desorption and coal deformation was carried out. The deformation characteristics of coal were clarified and a coal strain model was constructed. Finally, the applicability of low-permeability coal to N2 injection for CH4 displacement technology was investigated. The results show that the micropores and transition pores of coal samples are relatively developed. The pore morphology of coal is dominated by semi-open pores. The pore structure of coal is highly complex and heterogeneous. Transition pores, mesopores and macropores of coal have good connectivity, while micropores have poor connectivity. Under constant triaxial stress, the adsorption capacity of the coal for CH4 is greater than that for N2, and the deformation capacity of the coal for CH4 adsorption is greater than that for N2 adsorption. The axial strain, circumferential strain, and volumetric strain during the entire process of CH4 and N2 adsorption/desorption in the coal can be divided into three stages. Coal adsorption–desorption deformation has the characteristics of anisotropy and gas-difference. A strain model for the adsorption–desorption of CH4/N2 from coal was established by considering the expansion stress of adsorbed gas on the coal matrix, the compression stress of free gas on the coal matrix, and the expansion stress of free gas on micropore fractures. N2 has good injectability in low-permeability coal seams and has the dual functions of improving coal seam permeability and enhancing gas flow, which can significantly improve the effectiveness of low-permeability coal seam gas control and promote the efficient utilization of gas resources.

The new sensible thermal energy storage materials were prepared by the sintering method with low-grade pyrophyllite mineral powders as main raw materials, Suzhou clay as the sintering aid and sulfite liquors as the binder. Further, the performance of sensible thermal energy storage under different size distributions and sintering temperatures was investigated and analyzed. The results show that the optimum particle size distribution is 50:15:35, the bulk density, thermal conductivity, and specific heat capacity are the largest values, which are 1.97 g cm−3, 0.87 W m−1 K−1 and 0.63 kJ kg−1 K−1, respectively. Other properties including porosity, water absorption, flexural and compressive strength and so on are optimal under this size distribution. When the sintering temperature is 1200 °C, the material has a good thermal conductivity of 0.89 W m−1 K−1 and a high bulk density of 2.05 g cm−3. Meanwhile, the sample with the used temperature from 50 to 900 °C has the best thermal energy storage capacity of 306.29 kWh·m−3.

Summary: Low hierarchy and disruptive functionality of carbonaceous materials from biomass pyrolysis restrict their energy and environmental applications. Here, we report a cascade strategy to engineer bagasse into activated porous carbon with regulated morphology and functional groups. The initial pyrolysis of bagasse at 350°C –850°C facilitates curve sheet morphology and random meso-/micro-porosity. The subsequent alkali calcination leads to a micropore and comb-like structure with specific surface area and pore volume of 1,276.7 m2/g and 579.5 × 10−3 cm3/g, respectively. The last acid rinse removes the remaining –OH and –COO groups on the biochar surface. As a result, activated porous carbon processed at 450°C and activated with KOH/HCl exhibits the highest adsorption capacity of 103.4 mg/g at a rapid equilibrium rate fitted with Freundlich adsorption isotherm and facilitates steady mercury removal under pH 3–11. This study provides an effective approach to engineering agricultural waste into superior adsorbents for wastewater remediation. Science for society: Mercury contamination is a significant public health and environmental problem. Cost-effective and high-performance remediation methods have gained attention in both academic and industrial fields. Agricultural waste is an attractive resource as it provides rich carbon components with a modifiable structure to manufacture commercial adsorbents, namely, activated carbon. We present an approach that overcomes the existing issues in the complex structure and composition of activated carbon from waste heating. Highly orderly and regulated biochar fabricated from bagasse—sugarcane pulp—can be used for effective mercury adsorption under different conditions. This approach may facilitate the remediation of mercury-containing wastewater in a sustainable manner.

AbstractBackground/objective Morphometric vertebral fractures (VFs) and osteopathy are prevalent and clinically significant complications of Cushing disease (CD). However whether they represent an early occurrence in the natural progression of the disease is an ongoing debate. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of VFs in patients newly diagnosed with CD.Patients and methods This cross-sectional case–control study recruited 75 newly diagnosed CD patients and compared them with a control group of individuals without pituitary disorders or secondary forms of osteoporosis. Demographic, clinical and biochemical data were collected. BackgroundCushing’s disease (CD) poses significant challenges in its treatment due to the lack of reliable biomarkers for predicting tumor localization or postoperative clinical outcomes. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) has been shown to increase cortisol biosynthesis and is regulated by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).MethodsWe employed bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling (BIPSS), which is considered the gold standard for diagnosing pituitary sources of CD, to obtain blood samples and explore the clinical predictive value of the S1P concentration ratio in determining tumor laterality and postoperative remission. We evaluated 50 samples from 25 patients who underwent BIPSS to measure S1P levels in the inferior petrosal sinuses bilaterally.ResultsSerum S1P levels in patients with CD were significantly higher on the adenoma side of the inferior petrosal sinus than on the nonadenoma side (397.7 ± 15.4 vs. 261.9 ± 14.88; P < 0.05). The accuracy of diagnosing tumor laterality with the interpetrosal S1P and ACTH ratios and the combination of the two was 64%, 56% and 73%, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the combination of interpetrosal S1P and ACTH ratios, as a predictor of tumor laterality, exhibited a sensitivity of 81.82% and a specificity of 75%, with an area under the curve value of 84.09%. Moreover, we observed that a high interpetrosal S1P ratio was associated with nonremission after surgery. Correlation analyses demonstrated that the interpetrosal S1P ratio was associated with preoperative follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and postoperative ACTH 8 am levels (P < 0.05).ConclusionOur study demonstrated a significant association between the interpetrosal S1P ratio and tumor laterality, as well as postoperative remission in CD, suggesting that the interpetrosal S1P ratio could serve as a valuable biomarker in clinical practice.

Abstract Accurate and quantitative investigation of the physical structure and fractal geometry of coal has important theoretical and practical significance for coal bed methane (CBM) development and the prevention of dynamic disasters such as coal and gas outbursts. This study investigates the pore structure and fractal characteristics of soft and hard coals using nitrogen and carbon dioxide (N2/CO2) adsorption. Coal samples from Pingdingshan Mine in Henan province of China were collected and pulverized to the required size (0.20–0.25 mm). N2/CO2 adsorption tests were performed to evaluate the specific surface area (SSA), pore size distribution (PSD), and pore volume (PV) using Braunuer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), and Density Functional Theory (DFT). The pore structure was characterized based on the theory of fractal dimensions. The results unveiled that the strength of coal has a significant influence on pore structure and fractal dimensions. There are significant differences in SSA and PV between both coals. The BJH-PV and BET-SSA obtained by N2-adsorption for soft coal are 0.029–0.032 cm3/g and 3.523–4.783 m2/g. While the values of PV and SSA obtained by CO2-adsorption are 0.037–0.039 cm3/g and 106.016–111.870 m2/g. Soft coal shows greater SSA and PV than hard coal, which is consistent with the adsorption capacity ( $${V}_{\mathrm{L}}$$ V L ). The fractal dimensions of soft and hard coal are respectively different. The Ding coal exhibits larger D 1 and smaller D 2, and the reverse for the Wu coal seam is observed. The greater the value of D 1 (complexity of pore surface) of soft coal is, the larger the pore surface roughness and gas adsorption capacity is. The results enable us to conclude that the characterization of pores and fractal dimensions of soft and hard coals is different, tending to different adsorption/desorption characteristics. In this regard, the results provide a reference for formulating corresponding coal and gas outburst prevention and control measures.

Abstract Energy piles have been popular globally with functions of both pile foundation and ground source heat pumps. Although several researches have been devoted to the probabilistic design and assessment of energy piles, the corresponding procedures are too complicated for engineers. As a simple variant of the reliability-based design method, the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) approach for the geotechnical design of energy piles is presented in this study. Firstly, the load-transfer model for energy piles is developed to investigate the effect of cyclic thermal loading on the pile settlement. Then, the LRFD procedures based on first-order reliability method and target reliability method are implemented into two different constrained nonlinear optimization problems, respectively. The proposed LRFD model for energy piles is demonstrated through an example pile and a series of parametric analyses.

The power capacity of reflectarray antennas (RAs) is investigated through full-wave simulations and high-power microwave (HPM) experiments in this paper. In order to illustrate the results in detail, two RA elements are designed. The simulated power handling capacity of two RA elements are 7.17 MW/m2 and 2.3 GW/m2, respectively. To further study the HPM RA, two RA prototypes operating at 2.8 GHz are constructed with the aperture size of 1 m × 1 m. Simulations and experimental measurements are conducted for the two prototypes. The experimental results demonstrate that, even when subjected to 1 GW of power, the radiation beam of the RA with the second elements can still propagate in the intended direction. IntroductionThe present study aimed to provide a more accurate representation of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in college students during COVID-19 by performing meta-analyses by continents, national income, and study majors, and comparing the results with estimated pooled prevalence.MethodsBased on the guideline of PRISMA, literature was searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. The prevalence of PTSD was estimated through a random model based on the different continents and levels of national income, as well as study majors, and compared with the pooled prevalence of PTSD among college students.ResultsTotally 381 articles were retrieved from electronic databases and 38 articles were included in the present meta-analysis. Abstract Background Though the survival benefit of primary tumor operation for patients with signet ring cell carcinoma of the stomach is known, the specific characteristics of those patients who would profit from the operation are yet to be determined. To this end, a predictive model was developed to identify the conjecture that the survival profit from primary tumor operation would only be obtained by patients. Method The clinical data of the patients with signet ring cell carcinoma of the stomach were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, and then divided into operation and no-operation groups based on whether the patients underwent the primary tumor operation. To remove the confounding factors, propensity score matching was employed, and it was hypothesized that the patients who had been operated on and lived a longer life than the median cancer-specific survival time of those who hadn’t must have profited from the surgery. To discuss the independent factors of cancer-specific survival time in the beneficial group and the non-beneficial group, the Cox model was used, and based on the various vital predictive factors, a nomogram was drawn using logistic regression. Result The number of eligible patients was 12,484, with 43.9% (5483) of them having received surgery. After employing propensity score matching, the cancer-specific survival time of the operation group was found to be apparently longer (median: 21 vs. 5 months; p < 0.001) than the no-operation group. In the operation group, 4757 (86.7%) of the patients lived longer than five months (beneficial group). The six indexes (beneficial and non-beneficial group) included gender, age, Tumor Node Metastasis stage, histologic type, differentiation grade, and tumor position, and were used as predictors to draw the nomogram. The nomogram was used to divide the patients who had taken operations into two groups: the beneficial operation group and the non-beneficial operation group. The beneficial operation group, it was found, survived longer than the non-beneficial operation group (median cancer-specific survival time: 28 vs. 3 months, p < 0.001). Moreover, there was we could tell little difference in survival between the two groups (median cancer-specific survival time: 3 vs. 5 months). Conclusions The predictive model created to select suitable candidates for surgical treatment from patients with signet ring carcinoma of the stomach could be adopted to identify certain patients benefiting from the primary tumor operation.

BackgroundCurrently, telomere length is known to reflect the replication potential and longevity of cells, and many studies have reported that telomere length is associated with age-related diseases and biological aging. Studies have also shown that vitamin C acts as an oxidant and free radical scavenger to protect cells from oxidative stress and telomere wear, thus achieving anti-aging effects. At present, there are few and incomplete studies on the relationship between vitamin C and telomere length, so this study aims to explore the relationship between vitamin C and telomere length.MethodsThis study used cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) database from 1999 to 2002, a total of 7,094 participants were selected from all races in the United States. Male participants accounted for 48.2% and female participants accounted for 51.8%. The correlation between vitamin C and telomere length was assessed using a multiple linear regression model, and the effect of dietary vitamin C on telomere length was obtained after adjusting for confounding factors such as age, gender, race, body mass index (BMI), and poverty income ratio (PIR).ResultsThis cross-sectional study showed that vitamin C was positively correlated with telomere length, with greater dietary vitamin C intake associated with longer telomeres (β = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01–0.05, P = 0.003).ConclusionThis study shows that vitamin C intake is positively correlated with human telomere length, which is of guiding significance for our clinical guidance on people’s health care, but our study need to be confirmed by more in-depth and comprehensive other research results.

This paper introduces a novel single-layer microstrip patch element designed to achieve a wide beamwidth, in order to address the growing demand for wide-angle scanning capabilities in modern phased array systems. The proposed element, comprising a slot-etched circular patch and an array of metallized holes arranged in square rings, offers a unique approach to beam shaping. By carefully adjusting parameters such as the slot structure and feeding position, our element is engineered to simultaneously excite both the TM01 and TM21 modes, a key feature that contributes to its wide beamwidth characteristics. Through the constructive interference of these modes, our element demonstrates a remarkable 3 dB beamwidth of approximately 150° in both principal planes, showcasing its potential for wide-angle scanning applications. To validate the practical performance of this proposed element, two linear phased arrays are manufactured and experimentally evaluated. The simulation results confirm the wide-angle scanning capability of the antennas in both the E-plane and H-plane. Furthermore, the experimental assessment demonstrates that these linear phased arrays can effectively generate scanning beams within a frequency range of 25 GHz to 28 GHz, covering a wide angular range from −60° to 60°, while maintaining a gain loss within 3 dB. This innovative design approach not only offers a promising solution for achieving a wide beamwidth in microstrip patch elements, but also holds significant potential for the development of cost-effective phased arrays with wide-angle scanning capabilities, making it a valuable contribution to the advancement of phased array technology.

The vibration response of a partial composite beam bridge under the influence of moving vehicular loads was investigated. Due to the coupling effect between the vehicle and the bridge, the vibration information of the vehicle encompassed the vibration information of the bridge. Consequently, the dynamic response of the vehicle could be utilized to extract the dynamic information of the composite beam. A moving mass-spring-damping system and composite beam elements considering interfacial slips were used for the interaction vibration of a vehicle-composite bridge. A finite element program for the interaction vibration analysis of the vehicle-composite beam bridge was developed. The program was used to extract the vibration information of the composite beam bridge by analyzing the vehicle displacement, velocity, and acceleration in the interaction vibration of the beam and the vehicle. Taking the Hangzhou Jiubao Bridge as the engineering background, the influences of structural parameters such as shear stiffness of connections, prestress magnitude, as well as vehicle parameters, including vehicle stiffness, damping, and mass, on frequency identification were analyzed. Furthermore, the influences of road roughness, disturbance force generated by vehicle random vibrations, and interference signals generated by signal transmission on frequency identification of the bridge were investigated.

This paper demonstrates the analysis of a long-distance high-power microwave wireless power transmission (MWPT) system based on asymmetrical resonant magnetron and cyclotron-wave rectifier. In the system, the novel magnetron with the asymmetrical resonant cavity, the straps, and the output loop coupling circuit can effectively promote the beam–wave interaction, suppress the mode competition, and enhance the output coupling, which results in a 400 kW output microwave power with a conversion efficiency of 45%. The transceiver Cassegrain antenna system with its simple structure, high conversion efficiency, and high power capacity can attain an integral power transmission efficiency of 2.6% at 10 km distance. The cyclotron-wave rectifier with high efficiency and single-tube high power capacity can achieve 85% microwave to DC conversion efficiency. Finally, the long-distance high-power MWPT system can achieve 8.5 kW DC power with about 1% DC–DC transmission efficiency at the operating 2.45 GHz frequency and for the 10 km distance. Such a system is likely a potential and attracting solution to remotely power the fuel-free aerial vehicle from the ground, can also provide electrical power to an isolated mountain top or an island, and even an alternative to transmit the power from space solar power satellite in geostationary orbit to the ground.

In this paper, a novel X-band TM01–TE01 mode converter for high-power microwave (HPM) system is proposed. To realize the compact design, a helical corrugated waveguide with large deformation is employed to convert the TM01 mode into TE01 mode. By optimizing the structure parameters, the simulation results demonstrate that the maximum conversion efficiency of the proposed TM01–TE01 mode converter reaches 98.8% at 9.2 GHz. Moreover, this mode converter exhibits a conversion efficiency of over 95% in the operation band from 8.7 to 9.42 GHz, and the power capacity of the mode converter reaches GW-level in theory. More importantly, the overall longitudinal and transverse dimensions of the mode converter are less than three wavelengths. The results show the compact structure and high conversion efficiency of this mode converter, which has great potential application value in the HPM system.

The accurate and efficient segmentation of large-scale urban point clouds is crucial for many higher-level tasks, such as boundary line extraction, point cloud registration, and deformation measurement. In this paper, we propose a novel supervoxel segmentation approach to address the problem of under-segmentation in local regions of point clouds at various resolutions. Our approach introduces distance constraints from boundary points to supervoxel planes in the merging stage to enhance boundary segmentation accuracy between non-coplanar supervoxels. Additionally, supervoxels with roughness above a threshold are re-segmented using random sample consensus (RANSAC) to address multi-planar coupling within local areas of the point clouds. We tested the proposed method on two publicly available large-scale point cloud datasets. The results show that the new method outperforms two classical methods in terms of boundary recall, under-segmentation error, and average entropy in urban scenes.

Abstract Background Several studies demonstrate that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is involved in the process of bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), a bile acid with chaperone properties, is an inhibitor of ER stress. This study aimed to investigate the preventive effects of TUDCA on BLM-induced EMT and lung fibrosis. Methods The model of lung fibrosis was established by intratracheal injection with a single dose of BLM (3.0 mg/kg). In TUDCA + BLM group, mice were intraperitoneally injected with TUDCA (250 mg/kg) daily. Results BLM-induced alveolar septal destruction and inflammatory cell infiltration were alleviated by TUDCA. BLM-induced interstitial collagen deposition, as determined by Sirius Red staining, was attenuated by TUDCA. BLM-induced elevation of pulmonary α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and reduction of pulmonary E-cadherin were attenuated by TUDCA. BLM-induced pulmonary Smad2/3 phosphorylation was suppressed by TUDCA. BLM-induced elevation of Ki67 and PCNA was inhibited by TUDCA in mice lungs. In addition, BLM-induced elevation of HO-1 (heme oxygenase-1) and 3-NT (3-nitrotyrosine) was alleviated by TUDCA. Finally, BLM-induced upregulation of pulmonary GRP78 and CHOP was attenuated by TUDCA. Conclusions These results provide evidence that TUDCA pretreatment inhibits Smad2/3-medited EMT and subsequent lung fibrosis partially through suppressing BLM-induced ER stress and oxidative stress.

This paper presents a 12-bit 100-MS/s asynchronous successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for low-power wireless and imaging systems. A split-capacitor digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) structure is adopted for reducing the core area and improving the sampling speed. The linearity of the CDAC is calibrated by programming the least-significant-bits (LSBs) dummy capacitor. The unit capacitor in the CDAC array is customized for higher symmetry and reducing their mismatch. Our SAR ADC is based on asynchronous logic, and its timing is controlled by a delaying block in the critical path. The prototype is fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process with a 1.2 V supply and occupies an active area of 0.029 mm2. With a 100-MS/s sampling rate, the measured ENOB scores 10.17 bits for 1.5 MHz input with a figure-of-merit (FoM) of 6.94 fJ/conversion-step. It can achieve 8.83 bits for Nyquist input signal.

This paper addresses the 3D trajectory tracking problem of a novel underactuated underwater vehicle with 4 propellers. A 5-DOF kinematic and dynamic model of the quadrotor underwater vehicle (QUV) is established based on the underwater vehicle and quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle movement mechanism. A double-loop control structure is then developed. By constructing a Lyapunov function for the outer-loop controller, a 5-DOF trajectory tracking error equation and a velocity virtual control law are obtained. The inner-loop controller is built based on nonsingular integral terminal sliding mode control (NITSMC). Finally, the effectiveness and robustness of our control algorithm are demonstrated through numerical simulations. In particular, given a smooth, second-order derivable 3D reference trajectory, the QUV can quickly track the trajectory and satisfactorily converges in the neighborhood of the expected value in a finite time via NTISMC, which verifies its superiority compared with the other popular backstepping control (BSC) method.

Abstract Background Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone malignancy in children and adolescents, and hyperproliferation of cells is a major problem of OS. FBXO2 belongs to the family of F-box proteins, and is a substrate recognition component of the Skp1-Cul1-F-box protein (SCF) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex with specificity for high-mannose glycoproteins. The aim of the present study was to investigate the critical role of FBXO2 in OS cells. Methods The protein and mRNA expression levels of FBXO2 in clinic OS patients were measured by quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), Western blot and Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining assays, respectively. The FBXO2 overexpression model was constructed by retro-virus transfection in OS cells. FBXO2 knockout (KO) cells were generated by Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)–CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) assay. Cell counting and colony formation assays were used to analyze the effect of FBXO2 on the biological function of OS cells. FBXO2 KO cells were injected into nude mice to observe tumor growth in vivo. The interaction between FBXO2 and IL-6 was detected by immunoprecipitation. Luciferase assay was used to determine the transcriptional activity of STAT3. Results Here, we show that FBXO2 is significantly up-regulated in clinical OS samples compared to adjacent normal tissues. Ectopic expression of FBXO2 leads to increased OS cell proliferation and colony-forming ability, while FBXO2 knockout by CRISPR-Cas9-based gene editing has the opposite effect. In addition, the glycoprotein recognition activity of FBXO2 is required for its biological function in OS. In vivo experiments showed that FBXO2 knockout greatly impaired the tumorigenicity of OS cells in nude mice. At the molecular level, we found that knocking out FBXO2 can significantly inhibit STAT3 phosphorylation and downstream target gene expression through IL-6R stabilization. Conclusion Together, these results indicate that FBXO2 promotes OS development by activating the STAT3 signaling pathway, suggesting that FBXO2 may be a new target for OS treatment.

Ganoderma lucidum has a wide carbon spectrum, while the expression profile of key genes relevant to carbon metabolism on different carbon sources has been seldom studied. Here, the transcriptomes of G. lucidum mycelia cultured on each of 19 carbon sources were conducted. In comparison with glucose, 16 to 1,006 genes were upregulated and 7 to 1,865 genes were downregulated. Significant gene expression dynamics and induced activity were observed in laccase genes when using agricultural and forestry residues (AFRs) as solo carbon sources. Furthermore, study of laccase gene family in two haploids of G. lucidum GL0102 was conducted. Totally, 15 and 16 laccase genes were identified in GL0102_53 and GL0102_8, respectively, among which 15 pairs were allelic genes. Gene structures were conserved between allelic laccase genes, while sequence variations (most were SNPs) existed. Nine laccase genes rarely expressed on all the tested carbon sources, while the other seven genes showed high expression level on AFRs, especially Gllac2 and Gllac7, which showed 5- to 1,149-fold and 4- to 94-fold upregulation in mycelia cultured for 5 days, respectively. The expression of H53lac7 was consistently higher than that of H8lac7_1 on all the carbon sources except XM, exhibiting a case of allelic expression bias. A total of 47 SNPs and 3 insertions/deletions were observed between promoters of H53lac7 and H8lac7_1, which lead to differences in predicted binding sites of zinc fingers. These results provide scientific data for understanding the gene expression profile and regulatory role on different carbon sources and may support further functional research of laccase.

BackgroundWhile the relationship between blood pressure and blood lead has been studied more extensively, the effect of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration on this relationship remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of HDL concentration on the relationship between blood lead and blood pressure.MethodsThe research used cross-sectional data from the 2005 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included 16,451 participants aged 20–60 years. Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate the correlation among blood lead, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). HDL concentration was determined by low HDL concentration (≤ 49 mg/dl) and high HDL concentration (>49 mg/dl) stratified. The effect of HDL concentration was assessed by an interaction test between blood lead and SBP in multivariable linear regression.ResultsIn this cross-sectional research, we identified a positive correlation between blood lead and SBP, but not DBP. The relationship between blood lead and SBP was different in the group with low and high HDL concentrations (β: 0.21 95% Cl:−0.05-0.46 vs. β:0.47 95% Cl: 0.15-0.79). In addition, high HDL significantly altered the positive correlation between blood lead and SBP (P-value of interaction < 0.001).ConclusionThe study suggests an interaction between HDL and blood lead in elevating SBP, which may have important clinical implications.

IntroductionDietary vitamin A concentrations correlate with depression. Zinc has been reported to be associated with lower depression. In addition, zinc is an important cofactor in the activation of vitamin A. However, there are few studies investigating relationships between of dietary zinc intake, dietary vitamin A intake and depression.Materials and MethodsThe data for this study came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018 and involved 70,190 participants. We stratified participants by recommended dietary zinc intake (recommended dietary zinc intake for women: 8 mg/day, recommended dietary zinc intake for men: 11 mg/day). We further assessed the association between vitamin A and depression in participants with low and high zinc intake (interaction test) using univariate logistic regression of intake participants.ResultIn the female population we grouped the population into low and high zinc intake groups using the recommended dietary zinc intake of 8 (mg/day), with an increase in total vitamin A, the risk of depression was significantly lower in the low zinc intake group (OR: 0.85 95 CI: 0.76–0.96), while the risk of depression was increased in the high zinc intake group (OR: 1.05 95 CI: 0.95 to 1.17). Thus, in the female population, there was a significant interaction between insufficient vitamin an intake and depression (interaction likelihood ratio test of p = 0.011). In the male population we grouped the population by the recommended dietary zinc intake of 11(mg/day). Again, the population was divided into two groups with low and high zinc intake, however we did not find significant results for the interaction (p = 0.743 for the interaction likelihood ratio test).ConclusionOur findings suggest that zinc intake may influence the relationship between dietary vitamin A and depression. Of course, our findings require further randomized controlled trials to enhance the credibility.

Online monitoring of laser welding depth is increasingly important, with the growing demand for the precise welding depth in the field of power battery manufacturing for new energy vehicles. The indirect methods of welding depth measurement based on optical radiation, visual image and acoustic signals in the process zone have low accuracy in the continuous monitoring. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides a direct welding depth measurement during laser welding and shows high achievable accuracy in continuous monitoring. Statistical evaluation approach accurately extracts the welding depth from OCT data but suffers from complexity in noise removal. In this paper, an efficient method coupled DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Application with Noise) and percentile filter for laser welding depth determination was proposed. The noise of the OCT data were viewed as outliers and detected by DBSCAN. After eliminating the noise, the percentile filter was used to extract the welding depth. By comparing the welding depth determined by this approach and the actual weld depth of longitudinal cross section, an average error of less than 5% was obtained. The precise laser welding depth can be efficiently achieved by the method.

Camellia oleifera fruit shell (COS) is an agricultural waste product generated in large quantities by the seed oil extraction industry. Due to its hierarchical thickness structure, COS shows huge potential in constructing porous carbon materials after thermal chemical modification. Herein, a series of COS biochars were synthesized by a carbonization-activation process and achieved excellent mercury removal performance in an aqueous environment. High-temperature carbonization was found to facilitate lignin removal and porosity generation, while retaining hydroxyl and carbonyl groups available for mercury adsorption. A volume of micropores of 594 × 10−3 cm−3/g with average pore diameter of 1.7 nm was achieved in activated COS biochar. At 550 °C, an adsorption capacity of 57.6 mg/g was realized in 1 mg/L Hg2+ solution under different pH environments. This work provides an alternative adsorbent for removing hazardous materials using sustainable bioresources.

Although ball milling is effective for biochar modification with metal oxides for efficient phosphate removal, the recyclability of the adsorbent as well as the precursors for modification, still need to be optimized. Herein, a magnesium-modified biochar was first prepared with the precursor of MgCl2·6H2O through the solvent-free ball milling method. After that, recyclable biochar beads were fabricated with the introduction of sodium alginate and Fe3O4. The beads were proved to have excellent adsorption performance for phosphate with a saturated capacity of 53.2 mg g−1, which is over 12 times higher than that of pristine biochar beads. Although the particle size reduction, surface area, and O-containing group increments after milling are beneficial for adsorption, the remarkable promotion in performance should mainly result from the appropriate formation of magniferous crystals on biochar, which greatly accelerates the electrostatic interactions as well as precipitation for adsorption. The beads also exhibited excellent magnetism-driven recyclability, which greatly avoids secondary contamination and broadens the application field of the adsorbent.

As a functional monosaccharide, L-arabinose has protective effects on metabolic syndrome, but whether it is effective for cerebral ischemia in diabetic patients remains unknown. The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of type 2 diabetic rats was prepared and applied to determine the effect of L-arabinose on cerebral infarction (CI) with or without diabetes. Results showed that diabetes aggravated neurological deficits, increased the volume of CI, brain edema, and blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability after CI, which were alleviated by L-arabinose by repairing the damaged tight-junction proteins (zonula occludens 1 and claudin-5). L-arabinose could reverse the expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1, and tumor necrosis factor α in the MCAO model with diabetes. Conclusions: L-arabinose alleviates diabetes-aggravated cerebral ischemic injury by alleviating the destruction of the BBB via the downregulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway.

It may be very difficult to receive the signals from satellite positioning systems due to the existing obstacles in indoor environment. Arising from the popularity of smart phones, Wi-Fi based indoor positioning technology has the advantages with convenient deployment and low hardware cost. In this study, we focused on indoor positioning using Wi-Fi fingerprint data that were collected in shopping malls. Due to the volatility of Wi-Fi signals and the high-dimensional sparseness of fingerprint data, we proposed a feature extraction algorithm, called joint multi-task stacked denoising auto-encoder (JMT-SDAE), aiming at reducing the dimensionality of the original fingerprint data and improving the indoor positioning performance in shopping malls. Furthermore, the features extracted by JMT-SDAE and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) were merged to construct a hybrid model, named as JMT-SDAE+GBDT. The experimental results based on 13 location datasets showed that the proposed feature fusion model had better positioning accuracy when compared with other existing positioners, and thus confirmed the effectiveness of our proposed feature extraction algorithm through multi-task learning.

Binary butterfly optimization approach (bBOA) is a recent high performing feature selection algorithm presented in 2018 which is based on the food foraging behavior of butterflies. This paper tries to improve the structure of the bBOA to enhance its classification accuracy, dimension reduction and reliability in feature selection task for who are interested in the fields of data mining and pattern recognition. The new initialization strategy and differential evolution strategy are applied to reduce the randomness of bBOA's initialization and local search process. Then, a new parameter is added to make the bBOA's transfer function more adaptive to the change of exploration and exploitation. Besides, evolution population dynamics (EPD) mechanism is employed as an extension of bBOA. The new method called optimization and extension of binary butterfly optimization approaches (OEbBOA) is tested with the K nearest neighbor classier in which twenty UCI datasets and seven recent algorithms are utilized to assess the performance of the OEbBOA algorithm. The experimental results and nonparametric Wilcoxons rank sum test confirm the efficiency of the proposed OEbBOA in maximizing classification accuracy while minimizing the number of features selected.

Firstly, the characteristics of two-tone signals are discussed to explain the nonlinearity and efficiency of two-tone signal driven CPA. Secondly, a method of how to solve the efficiency of a two-tone signal driven CPA is proposed in this paper with a detailed calculation procedure and complete theory. Finally, a general empirical expression to calculate the drain efficiency (DE) of CPA versus the frequency ratio and the amplitude ratio of the two carriers is proposed. Simulation results and experimental verifications are given to validate the proposed analytical formulation to predict the efficiency of CPAs when driven with balanced or imbalanced two-tone signals.

Abstract Background Our earlier report indicated that active vitamin D3 inhibited epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis. The objective of this study was to further investigate whether vitamin D deficiency exacerbates BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Methods This study consists of two independent experiments. Experiment 1, male mice were fed with vitamin D deficient (VDD) fodder. Experiment 2, Cyp27b1 +/+, Cyp27b1 +/− and Cyp27b1 −/− mice were fed with standard diet. For pulmonary fibrosis, mice were intratracheally instilled with a single dose of BLM (1.5 mg/kg). Serum 25(OH) D level was measured. Pulmonary collagen deposition was assessed by Sirius red staining. EMT was measured and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β)/Smad3 signaling was evaluated in the lungs of BLM-treated mice. Results The relative weight of lungs was elevated in BLM-treated mice. Col1α1 and Col1α2, two collagen protein genes, were upregulated, and collagen deposition, as determined by Sirius red staining, was observed in the lungs of BLM-treated mice. E-cadherin, an epithelial marker, was downregulated. By contrast, vimentin and α-SMA, two EMT markers, were upregulated in the lungs of BLM-treated mice. Pulmonary TGF-β/Smad3 signaling was activated in BLM-induced lung fibrosis. Further analysis showed that feeding VDD diet, leading to vitamin D deficiency, aggravated elevation of BLM-induced relative lung weight. Moreover, feeding VDD diet aggravated BLM-induced TGF-β/Smad3 activation and subsequent EMT in the lungs. In addition, feeding VDD diet exacerbated BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Additional experiment showed that Cyp27b1 gene knockout, leading to active vitamin D3 deficiency, exacerbated BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Moreover, Cyp27b1 gene knockout aggravated pulmonary TGF-β/Smad2/3 activation and subsequent EMT in BLM-induced lung fibrosis. Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency exacerbates BLM-induced pulmonary fibrosis partially through aggravating TGF-β/Smad2/3-mediated EMT in the lungs.

This paper proposes a novel metasurface-based monopulse antenna. A multimode pyramidal horn with four ports is selected as the feed of the proposed monopulse antenna. The 3-dB couplers and the optimized waveguide phase shifters are employed to design the monopulse comparator. In order to obtain good sum and difference beams performance, metasurfaces are mounted on a bowl structure to radiate the electromagnetic wave from the sub-reflector. An experimental prototype of the proposed design has been fabricated and measured at Ku-band. The measured results show that the gain ratio between the sum and difference beams is 2.8 dB and 3.7 dB, respectively. More importantly, the peak gain of the sum beam at 16 GHz is 27.1 dB, without considering the loss of the comparator, with a corresponding aperture efficiency of about 41.4%. This indicates that the proposed structure is beneficial for improving the sum and difference beams performance of the monopulse antenna, which is suitable for tracking platforms.

Insect-specific virus (ISV) is one of the most promising agents for the biological control of insects, which is abundantly distributed in hematophagous insects. However, few ISVs have been reported in Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius), one of the major pests threatening soybeans and causing great losses in yield and quality. In this work, field Riptortus pedestris was collected from six soybean-producing regions in China, and their virome was analyzed with the metatranscriptomic approach. Altogether, seven new insect RNA viruses were identified, three of which had complete RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and nearly full-length genome sequences, which were named Riptortus pedestris alphadrosrha-like virus 1 (RpALv1), Riptortus pedestris alphadrosrha-like virus 2 (RpALv2) and Riptortus pedestris almendra-like virus (RiALv). The three identified novel ISVs belonged to the family Rhabdoviridae, and phylogenetic tree analysis indicated that they were clustered into new distinct clades. Interestingly, the analysis of virus-derived small-interfering RNAs (vsiRNAs) indicated that only RiALv-derived siRNAs exhibited 22 nt length preference, whereas no clear 21 or 22 nt peaks were observed for RpALv1 and RpALv2, suggesting the complexity of siRNA-based antiviral immunity in R. pedestris. In conclusion, this study contributes to a better understanding of the microenvironment in R. pedestris and provides viral information for the development of potential soybean insect-specific biocontrol agents.

To realize multi-band mode conversion in a high-power microwave incoherent power combination system, a tri-band conversion system (at X-, Ku-, and Ka-bands) is proposed in this paper. The tri-band conversion system mainly consists of three parts: a dual-band multiplexer, a circular waveguide with a 90° bend, and a tri-band mode converter. To investigate the mode coupling characteristics in the system, every part is carefully analyzed and verified. Numerical and simulation results show that the final conversion efficiencies of the conversion system are 98.9% [coaxial transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode–coaxial TE11 mode at 10.16 GHz], 99.1% (coaxial TEM mode–coaxial TE11 mode at 14.45 GHz), and 99.6% (circular TM01–circular TE11 at 30.5 GHz). Meanwhile, its maximum power handling capacities reached 1.5 GW, 957.6 MW, and 726.2 MW. The good agreement between theoretical analyses and simulation results demonstrates that the proposed tri-band system is feasible in high-power microwave applications.
