Abstract

Background: Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most commonly performed and successful orthopaedic surgeries. At the same time, the issue about the best surgical approach for THA remains controversial. This systematic review aims to evaluate the current evidence for the use of Minimally-Invasive Surgery (MIS) in THA. Methods: A systematic literature search of PubMed, Medline and Embase was conducted. Randomised controlled trials, comparative studies, and cohort studies were included in this systematic review. Main outcome measurements included incision length, blood loss, operating time, length of stay, complications, postoperative pain on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Short Form 36/12 Health Survey (SF 36/12), Harris Hip Score (HHS) and cup inclination. Results: A total of 30 studies met the inclusion criteria. There was no significant difference between MIS and conventional approaches for THA with regards to complication rates and implant inclination angle. Abstract

A deficiency in the implementation of current radiation protection is the determination of the ambient dose equivalent H*(10) and the directional dose equivalent H ́(0.07) in pulsed radiation fields. Conventional dosimeter systems are not suitable for measurements in photon fields comprising short radiation pulses, which consequently leads to high detector loads in short time periods. Nevertheless, due to the implementation of advanced medical accelerators for cancer therapy, new medical diagnostic devices as well as various laser machining systems, there is an urgent need for suitable dosimeter systems for real time dosimetry. In this paper, a detector concept based on an organic scintillator and a full digital data analysis with the aim of developing a portable, battery powered measurement system is presented.

Abstract

Background Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor impairment in childhood and often accompanied by a broad spectrum of comorbidities. Data are sparse concerning visual impairment (VI) and functional classification among CP children. Objective The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of VI among children with CP and to investigate a possible association between VI and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the Bimanual Fine Motor Function (BFMF). Methods In this hospital-based study, records of 200 children with CP aged 2 to 17 years were reviewed. Results Overall, VI was found in 59.5% of children with CP. Prevalence of VI was higher when compared with non-CP children. A correlation between GMFCS as well as BFMF and severity of VI was found. Children with severe CP were at greater risk for severe VI, especially cerebral VI compared with children with mild CP. Conclusion VI is a significant problem in children with CP and is correlated with motor function. Children with CP should undergo detailed ophthalmologic and orthoptic assessment to enable early intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Die chirurgische Therapie der symptomatischen Sprunggelenksarthrose, vor allem bei jungen Patienten mit posttraumatischen Deformitäten, stellt eine große Herausforderung an den Fußchirurgen dar. Die Frage, ob und in welchen Fällen der Endoprothese oder der Arthrodese der Vorzug zu geben ist, bleibt nach wie vor unbeantwortet und die aktuelle Literatur trägt wenig zu ihrer Klärung bei. Nach den enttäuschenden Ergebnissen der ersten Generation von Sprunggelenksprothesen lassen nun die guten mittelfristigen Resultate der zweiten Generation aufhorchen. Nichtsdestoweniger steht der endgültige Nachweis ihrer Effektivität noch aus und es sind Langzeitstudien erforderlich, in denen die funktionellen Ergebnisse nach Endoprothesenimplantation denen nach Arthrodese gegenübergestellt werden müssen, um den Stellenwert der Sprunggelenksendoprothetik letztlich festzulegen.

Abstract

In the frame of the development of the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (Athena) mission, currently in phase A, ESA is continuing to mature the optics technology and the associated mass production techniques. These efforts are driven by the programmatic and technical requirement of reaching TRL 6 prior to proposing the mission for formal adoption (planned for 2020). A critical part of the current phase A preparation activities is addressing the industrialization of the Silicon Pore Optics mirror plates coating. This include the transfer of the well-established coating processes and techniques, performed at DTU Space, to an industrial scale facility suitable for coating the more than 100,000 mirror plates required for Athena. In this paper, we explain the considerations for the planned coating facility including, requirement specification, equipment and supplier selection, preparing the coating facility for the deposition equipment, designing and fabrication.
