Abstract

We present experiments at the Trident laser facility demonstrating the use of x-ray fluorescence (XRF) to simultaneously measure density, ionization state populations, and electron temperature in shocked foams. An imaging x-ray spectrometer obtained spatially resolved measurements of Ti K-a emission. Density profiles were measured from K-a intensity. Ti ionization state distributions and electron temperatures were inferred by fitting K-a spectra to spectra from CRETIN simulations. This work shows that XRF provides a powerful tool to complement other diagnostics to make equation of state measurements of shocked materials containing a suitable tracer element. Abstract

Nanoporous gold (NPG) and materials derived from it by templating have complex pore architecture that determines their technologically relevant physical properties. Here, we apply high-resolution hydrogen thermoporometry to study the pore structure of NPG and NPG-derived titania nanofoam (TNF). Results reveal complex multimodal pore size distributions for NPG and TNF. The freezing--melting hysteresis is pronounced, with freezing and melting scans having entirely different shapes. Experiments involving partial freeze--melt cycles reveal the lack of direct correlation between individual freezing and melting peaks, pointing to phenomena that are beyond the Gibbs-Thomson formalism. The depression of the average freezing temperature scales linearly with the ratio of the internal surface area (measured by gas sorption) and the total pore volume derived from the density of monoliths. Thermoporometry yields total pore volumes in good agreement with those derived from monolith densities for both NPG and TNF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Taking full advantage of the unique laboratory environment created by the National Ignition Facility (NIF) will require the availability of foam-lined indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion targets. Here, we report on a new approach that enables fabrication of target structures that consist of a thin-walled (<30 &mgr;m) ultra-low-density (<30 mg cm3) hydrocarbon foam film inside a thick-walled, ∼2mm diameter ablator shell. In contrast to previous work on direct-drive targets that started with the fabrication of foam shells, we use a prefabricated ablator as a mold to cast the foam liner within the shell. This work summarizes crucial components of this new approach, including the aerogel chemistry, filling of the ablator shell with the aerogel precursor solution with nanolitre precision, creating uniform polymer gel coatings inside the ablator capsule, supercritical drying and doping. Abstract

Although actuation in biological systems is exclusively powered by chemical energy, this concept has not been realized in man-made actuator technologies, as these rely on generating heat or electricity first. Here, we demonstrate that surface-chemistry-driven actuation can be realized in high-surface-area materials such as nanoporous gold. For example, we achieve reversible strain amplitudes of the order of a few tenths of a per cent by alternating exposure of nanoporous Au to ozone and carbon monoxide. The effect can be explained by adsorbate-induced changes of the surface stress, and can be used to convert chemical energy directly into a mechanical response, thus opening the door to surface-chemistry-driven actuator and sensor technologies. 22. Partition and Structure of Aqueous NaCl and CaCl2Electrolytes in Carbon-Slit Electrodes

Abstract

We report molecular dynamics simulation results obtained for aqueous NaCl and CaCl2solutions used as electrolytes in model electric double layer capacitors. The electrodes are carbon-slit pores of widths 0.65, 0.7, 0.79, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.6 nm. The applied voltage is represented as a uniform surface charge density on the pore surfaces. Toward replicating experimentally relevant conditions, the surface charge densities span between 0 (neutral pore) and 15 μC/cm2(both positive and negative). Charge localization on pore entrances is not considered. As the neutral pores are charged, we monitor the accumulation of the ions from the bulk (at ∼1.8 M ionic strength) to the pores. Our results show that the ionic concentration inside the pores increases as the surface charge density increases, as expected. More interestingly, the surface charge density at which the ions begin to penetrate the pores increases as the pore width decreases and as the ion size and the ion hydration strength increase. The pore width at which the maximum partition coefficient obtained at the largest surface charge density considered varies with the ion type (0.65 nm pores for Na+, 0.9 nm pores for Ca2+, and 0.79 nm pores for Cl–ions). The density distribution of electrolytes within the charged pores depends on the water structure and on the hydration structure of the ions under confinement, which is ion-specific.

23. Revisiting the S−Au(111) Interaction:  Static or Dynamic?

Abstract

The Au−S interaction is probably the most intensively studied interaction of Au surfaces with nonmetals, as, for example, it plays an important role in Au ore formation1 and controls the structure and dynamics of thiol-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs).2-4 Various S-induced surface structures on Au(111) were recently reported for different conditions and predominantly interpreted in terms of a static Au surface. Here, we demonstrate that the Au(111) surface exhibits a very dynamic character upon interaction with adsorbed sulfur:  large-scale surface restructuring and incorporation of Au atoms into a growing 2D AuS phase were observed in situ. These results provide new insight into the Au−S surface chemistry.
