This plan formalises specific operations (meetings and agendas), at Work Package (WP) and sub-WP level for the following 12 months. The output will be formalised via the private workspace, and associated project management software. The plan will identify and facilitate the necessary Coordination to help ensure the timely delivery and success of linked project activities and meetings or workshops. This plan will also help inform the framework of the Data Management Plan.&nbsp

The series of decision models produced in this Deliverable (D8.2) will be integrated into a model for the assessment of overall sustainability of legume systems, with respect to the identification of key legume-based system indicators for the three pillars of sustainability. The decision model will be then used for evaluation of the relative sustainability of transition pathways to more effective scenarios.&nbsp

Impact Plan: this Deliverable report (D9.8, D56) is directed by feedback from TRUE’s Stakeholder Advisory Board (SAB, the commercial partners), and also from other multi-actors engaged via the ISAB (Intercontinental Science Advisory Board), and including operatives of the European Legume Innovation Network (or ‘E-LIN’) workshops, existing relevant H2020 research projects, and successful RUR (rural renaissance) projects. This direction will help ensure research complementarity, synergy and science excellence. The aim of this report is to define the best routes to impact. &nbsp

This Deliverable presents the result from the application of a policy Delphi and highlights how experts assess the potential of governance contexts that may favour therealisation of legume-supportedvalue chains.

The leaflet described in this project Deliverable highlights key methodology and footprint results for legume food and feed products. It summarises some key findings on legume environmental footprints from an attributional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) undertaken in WP5. Carbon footprint results are presented for beans, chickpeas, soybean, lupins and peas across the three European biogeographical regions – Atlantic/Boreal, Continental and Mediterranean. Key results for pea-gin, pea protein balls and chickpea pasta are also highlighted as example case studies.

This report, ‘Environmental Assessment of Diets’, presents both an analysis of global dietary change since the 1960s as a function of income, focussing on macronutrient intake (energy, carbohydrate, protein and fat), and a more detailed environmental and nutrient density assessment of the present-day European diet. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of legumes in reducing CO2e emissions and gPO43- release associated with diet. The report ends with a nutritional and environmental comparison of the European diet with the recently launched EAT Lancet Commission reference diet.

The 2nd Legume Innovation and Network (LIN) workshop for the Atlantic-Boreal Region entitled “Enabling Legume Processing: opportunities and barriers”, took place Tuesday 7th May 2019 at Hotel Sinatur, Nyborg, Denmark. It was hosted by Karen Hamann from the Institute for Food Studies & Agro Industrial Development Aps (IFAU) in collaboration with the association, Organic Denmark. The main objectives of the workshop were to allow participants to benefit from the insight, research and experiences of the TRUE Project-partners and stakeholders from the whole legume value chain and to explore innovative practices of legume processing. The workshop convened 54 participants including TRUE members, whose interests spanned the whole legume-based value chain. The programme featured nine oral presentations and a fieldtrip to a local food factory. Discussions and dialogue among the participants were facilitated through three break-out sessions and a display of nine posters. The overall emphasis was on the development of solutions to address the challenges of increasing legume production and consumption in the EU, that have been identified and discussed in the previous workshops, especially in relation to processing. Thus, the speakers touched upon several results from the ongoing innovation and general trends. Among the information communicated, it was found that processing by smaller operators (SMEs) can be fulfilled, since facilities and machines to process small quantities (from one tonne) are currently available. In addition, there are promising opportunities in biorefining legumes. For example, using existing technologies such as brewing and distilling, which can deliver important potential for co-products, for example in fish feed to replace ingredients which would otherwise have been produced from the marine food-system. Similarly, there are positive results from exploring biorefined clover-grass as a protein source for feed of poultry and pigs, and the production of other promising by-products, i.e. in biogas production. The consumer trends for healthier and more ethical lifestyles and consumption patterns are also pushing demand for pulses and for new legume-based food and drink products. The focus of the discussions in the first break-out session were on six policy pathways to foster increased production and consumption of legumes, these included: 1, knowledge transfer; 2, public-private partnerships; 3, improved financial incentives; 4, certification and labelling; 5, integration of health and nutrition aspects; and 6, agro-ecological approaches. During the second round of discussion, the main themes were vulnerability and resilience of legume-based supply chains. The lack of knowledge of the benefits of legumes was raised as a main issue to be addressed, both among farmers, producers, outlets and consumers as well as decision makers and cooks etc. Developing and implementing a Life Cycle Analyses (LCA) label was considered as an important way forward, as illustrated here by the comparative analysis of pasta made from chickpeas compared to wheat.

This Deliverable report presents the impact of key factors influencing decision making of farmers and consumers to uptake legume cultivation and, respectively, the choice to include legumes into diets. Results provide guidance on determinants of positive behavioural change towards legume inclusion. Farmer and consumer analyses are based on survey data for the UK farmers and consumers, and findings are discussed comparatively in the context of European production and consumption and main factors potentially influencing behaviours and trends. The report informs how we may operate more effectively to affect behavioural change positively towards legume inclusion.

This report is Deliverable D4.3 (D25) in the TRUE project. The report analyses the present market potential for fodder- and grain-legumes in the EU feed sector including both farm animals and aquaculture. The analysis will touch upon aspects related to value chain organization and markets, drivers and barriers for increasing demand for fodder- and grain-legumes in the feed sector, and with a point of departure being animal nutrition. The report covers a wide range of legume crops including faba beans, soya beans, peas, lupins, alfalfa and clover. A comparative assessment is carried out for European fodder- and grain-legumes in contrast to imported soya beans to assess the competitiveness of European (home-)grown protein crops against international sources. The reports conclusions are followed by a collection of recommended actions to promote a wider cultivation and use of European grown fodder- and grain-legumes in the feed sector.

This document outlines the work carried out to complete Deliverable D4.3 ‘Review of historic datasets covering multiple stresses in tomato’. A systematic methodology has been thoroughly designed and applied to identify, collate and synthesise the available evidence on techniques and management approaches that aim that optimise the productivity of tomatoes under conditions of water and/or nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) deficit. A systematic map was considered the most appropriate approach to meet the objective of the review, which includes the identification of the current state of a range of interventions and extent to which each has been studied. The insight will help direct the foci of researchers, growers and policy makers.

This document aims to give a system-wide (so called, ‘system-level’) assessment of (novel) approaches to optimise European tomato production and minimise environmental costs under conditions of low input. The approach is multiactor (as evidenced from the long co-authorship list) and takes a value-chain wide and agroecological perspective to appraises insights gained from all research and innovation effort within project whilst also drawing upon expert insight from project-associated stakeholders.&nbsp
