2. Does Consciousness Collapse the Wave Function

Abstract

A conceptual replication of the Hall-experiment to test the 'subjective reduction' interpretation of the measurement problem in Quantum Physics is reported. Two improvements are introduced. First the delay between pre-observation and final observation of the same quantum event is increased from a few microseconds in the original experiment to 1 second in this replication. Second, rather than using the observers conscious response as the dependent variable, we use the early brain responses as measured by EEG. These early responses cover a period where the observer is not yet conscious of the quantum event. Results support the 'subjective reduction' hypothesis because significant differences between the brain responses of the final observer are found dependent upon the pre-observer looking or not looking at the quantum event (exact binomial p < 0.02). Alternative 'normal' explanations are discussed and rejected. It is concluded that the present results do justify further research along these lines., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Primary and metastatic tumors of the central nervous system are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms with varied outcomes and management strategies. Recently, improved survival observed in 2 randomized clinical trials established combined chemotherapy and radiation as the new standard for treating patients with pure or mixed anaplastic oligodendroglioma harboring the 1p/19q codeletion. For metastatic disease, increasing evidence supports the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery in treating patients with multiple metastatic lesions but low overall tumor volume. These guidelines provide recommendations on the diagnosis and management of this group of diseases based on clinical evidence and panel consensus. This version includes expert advice on the management of low-grade infiltrative astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, anaplastic gliomas, glioblastomas, medulloblastomas, supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors, and brain metastases. 5. Cognitive ATI Research: A Simulated Laboratory Environment in (PCE-)Prolog.

Abstract

A study of 228 undergraduate psychology students examined the effectiveness of a prototype of "heatlab," a laboratory simulation written in PCE-PROLOG, intended for remedying misconceptions of the concepts "heat" and "temperature." The effect of varying the amount of structure on students' understanding and the possibility of an interaction between amount of structure and the students' negative fear of failure were also examined. Quantitative data (using pre-, post-, and retention tests) indicated that understanding of the concepts had been increased by "heatlab." The amount of structuring was shown not to make a significant difference, neither as a main effect nor in interaction with fear of failure. In a socratic remedy of a misconception, the structure imposed upon the discovery process is aimed at inducing a paradox which forces the student to re-evaluate his/her beliefs. Students' reactions to paradoxes were examined, with a focus on the circumstances under which surprise reactions occur and the effect of varying the amount of structure on these reactions. Qualitative data (analysis of a think-aloud protocol) indicated an interaction between fear of failure and structuring in that there is no socratic learning for high fear of failure subjects in the unstructured condition. 7. How Will Libraries Pay for Electronic Information?

The availability of electronic information sources in libraries has revived the debate over user fees. As increasing amounts of information are available only electronically, the cost of providing access becomes higher and harder to predict. 24. Overview of the Cost of Acquiring, Cataloging, and Processing Library Materials at the Tucson Public Library.

Abstract

A synopsis of three studies conducted in the Technical Services area of the Tucson Public Library from January 1977-June 1980, this report presents estimated costs of acquiring, cataloging, and processing print and nonprint library materials. An average cost of $7.00 per book copy and $12.20 per nonprint copy is developed, and it is demonstrated through a range of costs that ordering patterns (i.e., single copies, multiple copies, new titles, added titles) make a significant impact on unit costs. An organizational chart showing staffing levels, an outline of activities of the three sections of the Technical Services area, and a summary of automated systems being used at the Tucson Public Library are included. 28. Self-efficacy for symptom management in the acute phase of hematopoietic stem cell transplant: A pilot study.

Abstract

Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is an intensive treatment associated with distressing treatment and disease-related symptoms that affect patient outcomes such as functional status and quality of life. Self-efficacy for symptom management (SESM) is a person's belief in their ability to perform behaviors to prevent and relieve symptoms. Presence of SESM can impact symptom distress and functional status. This study describes the changes over time and relationships among SESM, symptom distress, and physical functional status in adults during the acute phase of HSCT. Patients (n = 40) completed measures of symptom distress, SESM, and physical function at time points prior to and at days 7, 15 and 30 post-transplant. Clinical outcomes were length of stay and number of readmissions. Symptom distress, physical function, and SESM changed significantly over time. There was a significant negative relationship between symptom distress and physical function and between symptom distress and SESM at all points. The lowest levels of SESM and physical function were at day 7 when symptom distress was highest. Symptom distress was a moderator for the relationship between physical function and SESM at day 15. This was the first study to examine SESM in the acute phase of HSCT. Higher SESM was associated with fewer symptoms and increased physical function. Less symptom distress was associated with higher physical function and confidence to manage symptoms. These findings provide the basis for development of patient-centered interventions to enhance SESM when symptoms are at their highest immediately after HSCT. • High self-efficacy for symptom management led to fewer symptoms. • High self-efficacy for symptom management led to increased physical function. • Less symptom distress was associated with confidence to manage symptoms. • Enhancing self-efficacy has potential to improve symptom management and outcomes. 46. Consciousness and Quantum Physics: Empirical Research on the Subjective Reduction of the Statevector.

Abstract

There are two major theoretical perspectives on the relation between quantum physics and consciousness. The first one is the proposal by Hameroff and Penrose CHEXX[16] that consciousness arises from the collapse of the statevector describing nonconscious brainstates. The second perspective is the proposition that consciousness acts as the ultimate measurement device, i. e. a measurement is defined as the collapse of the statevector describing the external physical system, due to interaction with a conscious observer. The latter (dualistic) proposition has resulted in the thought experiment with Schrodinger's cat and is generally considered as extremely unlikely. However, that proposition is, under certain assumptions, open to empirical verification. This was originally done by Hall et al. CHEXX[15]. A refined experiment to test the "subjective" reduction' interpretation of the measurement problem in quantum physics was reported by Bierman CHEXX[3]. In the latter experiment, auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) of subjects observing (previously unobserved) radioactive decay were recorded. These were compared with AEPs from events that were already observed and thus supposedly already collapsed into a singular state. Significant differences in brain signals of the observer were found. In this chapter we report a further replication that is improved upon the previous experiments by adding a nonquantum event as control. Differential effects of preobservation were expected not to appear in this classical condition since the quantum character of the event is presumed crucial. No differential effects were found in either condition, however. Marginal differences were found between the quantum and classical conditions. Possible explanations for the inability to replicate the previous findings are given as well as suggestions for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
