Search

A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is investigated for a well-selected sample composed of $23$ Seyfert 1 galaxies observed simultaneously in the optical/UV and X-ray bands with the Neil Gehrels {\it Swift} Observatory. The optical to UV continuum spectra are modeled, for the first time, with emission from an accretion disk with a generalized radial temperature profile, in order to account for the intrinsic spectra which are found to be generally redder than the model prediction of the standard Shakura-Sunyaev disk (SSD) ($F_\nu\propto\nu^{+1/3}$). The power-law indices of the radial temperature profile ($T_{\rm eff}(R)\propto R^{-p}$, $R$ is the radius of the accretion disk) are inferred to be $p=0.5$ -- $0.75$ (a median of $0.63$), deviating from the canonical $p=0.75$ for the SSD model as widely adopted in previous studies. A marginal correlation of a flatter radial temperature profile (a smaller $p$ value) with increasing the Eddington ratio is suggested. Such a model produces generally a lower peak of accretion disk emission and thus a smaller bolometric luminosity in some of the AGN, particularly those with high Eddington ratios, than that based on the SSD model by a factor of several. The broadband SED, the bolometric correction factors and their dependence on some of the AGN parameters are re-visited. We suggest that such non-standard SSD disks may operate in AGN and are at least partly responsible for the reddened optical/UV spectra as observed. Quasars are high-luminosity active galactic nuclei believed to be powered by accretion of interstellar matter onto a super-massive black hole (SMBH) therein. Most of the observed energy is released in an accretion disk of inspiralling gas surrounding the SMBH. An enormous amount of fueling material is expected to be transported inwards. However, basic questions remain unanswered as to whether and how the accretion disks are supplied with external gas, since no disk-feeding inflow has hitherto been observed clearly. Here we report the discovery of highly redshifted broad absorption lines arising from neutral hydrogen and helium atoms in a small sample of quasars. Their absorption troughs show a broad range of Doppler velocities from zero extending continuously inward up to as high as $\sim 5,000$ km s$^{-1}$. We thus see through streams of cold gas moving with a radially inward velocity component that spans an immense gradient---a result of gravitational acceleration by the central SMBH. Extensive photo-ionization modeling for the archetypical object SDSS J103516.20+142200.6 indicates the inflowing gas to be dense, thick and moderately ionized, with a characteristic distance to the SMBH of $\sim 1,000$ gravitational radii, possibly overlapping or close to the outer accretion disk. Our results present the first compelling evidence for the long-sought inflow directly feeding quasars' accretion disks with external materials, likely originating from the dusty torus at a parsec scale. Our approach provides a new tool to probe the bulk of the so far elusive fueling inflows in quasars. Their studies may help address some of the fundamental questions concerning accretion physics, the onset and sustainment of quasar activity, and the SMBH growth at centers of most galaxies.

We report the discovery of a luminous ultra-soft X-ray excess in a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert1 galaxy, RXJ1633+4718, from archival ROSAT observations. The thermal temperature of this emission, when fitted with a blackbody, is as low as 32.5(+8.0,-6.0)eV. This is in remarkable contrast to the canonical temperatures of ~0.1-0.2keV found hitherto for the soft X-ray excess in active galactic nuclei (AGN), and is interestingly close to the maximum temperature predicted for a postulated accretion disc in this object. If this emission is indeed blackbody in nature, the derived luminosity [3.5(+3.3,-1.5)x10^(44)ergs/s] infers a compact emitting area with a size [~5x10^(12)cm or 0.33AU in radius] that is comparable to several times the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole at the mass estimated for this AGN (3x10^6Msun). In fact, this ultra-steep X-ray emission can be well fitted as the (Compton scattered) Wien tail of the multi-temperature blackbody emission from an optically thick accretion disc, whose parameters inferred (black hole mass and accretion rate) are in good agreement with independent estimates using optical emission line spectrum. We thus consider this feature as a signature of the long-sought X-ray radiation directly from a disc around a super-massive black hole, presenting observational evidence for a black hole accretion disc in AGN. Many low-mass X-ray binaries show both hard and soft spectral states. For several sources the transitions between these states have been observed, mostly from the soft to the hard state during a luminosity decrease. In a few cases also the transition from the hard to the soft state was observed, coincident with an increase of the luminosity. Surprisingly this luminosity was not the same as the one during a following change back to the hard state. The values differed by a factor of about 3 to 5. We present a model for this hysteresis in the light curves of low-mass X-ray binaries (sources with neutron stars or black holes). We show that the different amount of Compton cooling or heating acting on the accretion disk corona at the time of the transition causes this switch in the accretion mode at different mass accretion rates and therefore different luminosities. The inner disk during the soft state provides a certain amount of Compton cooling which is either not present or much less if the inner region is filled with a hot advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) that radiates a hard spectrum., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astron. We investigate a corona coupled with underlying disk through magnetic field and radiation field, and present emergent spectra calculated from Monte Carlo simulations. The spectra are determined for given black-hole mass and accretion rate. We find two types of solutions corresponding for hard spectrum and soft spectrum. In the hard-spectrum solution, the accretion energy is dominantly dissipated in the corona, supporting a strong corona above a cool disk; The hard X-ray spectral indices are around 1.1, same for different accretion rates. In the soft-spectrum solution, the accretion energy is mainly dissipated in the disk. The coronal temperature and density are quite low. Consequently, the spectra are dominated by the disk radiation peaking at UV and soft X-rays. For low-luminosity systems, there exists only the solution of hard spectra; While for high-luminosity systems, there exist both solutions of hard and soft spectra. For middle-luminosity systems, besides the hard spectra, moderately soft spectra composed of an inner soft-spectrum solution and an outer hard-spectrum solution may occur, the softness of which increases with increasing luminosity. The hard spectra are close to the observed spectra in Seyfert galaxies and radio-quiet QSOs. The composite spectra may account for the diversity of broad band spectra observed in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies.

Recent studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) found a statistical inverse linear scaling between the X-ray normalized excess variance $\sigma_{\rm rms}^2$ (variability amplitude) and the black hole mass spanning over $M_{\rm BH}=10^6- 10^9\ M_{\odot}$. Being suggested to have a small scatter, this scaling relation may provide a novel method to estimate the black hole mass of AGN. However, a question arises as to whether this relation can be extended to the low-mass regime below $\sim10^6\ M_{\odot}$. If confirmed, it would provide an efficient tool to search for AGN with low-mass black holes using X-ray variability. This paper presents a study of the X-ray excess variances for a sample of AGN with black hole masses in the range of $10^5- 10^6\ M_{\odot}$ observed with {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it ROSAT}, including data both from the archives and from newly preformed observations. It is found that the relation is no longer a simple extrapolation of the linear scaling; instead, the relation starts to flatten at $\sim10^6\ M_{\odot}$ toward lower masses. Our result is consistent with the recent finding of \citet{L15}. Such a flattening of the $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma_{\rm rms}^2$ relation is actually expected from the shape of the power spectrum density of AGN, whose break frequency is inversely scaled with the mass of black holes., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We extended the disk corona model (Meyer & Meyer-Hofmeister 1994; Meyer, Liu, & Meyer-Hofmeister 2000a) to the inner region of galactic nuclei by including different temperatures in ions and electrons as well as Compton cooling. We found that the mass evaporation rate and hence the fraction of accretion energy released in the corona depend strongly on the rate of incoming mass flow from outer edge of the disk, a larger rate leading to more Compton cooling, less efficient evaporation and a weaker corona. We also found a strong dependence on the viscosity, higher viscosity leading to an enhanced mass flow in the corona and therefore more evaporation of gas from the disk below. If we take accretion rates in units of the Eddington rate our results become independent on the mass of the central black hole. The model predicts weaker contributions to the hard X-rays for objects with higher accretion rate like narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), in agreement with observations. For luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) strong Compton cooling in the innermost corona is so efficient that a large amount of additional heating is required to maintain the corona above the thin disk., 17 pages, 6 figures. We construct a simple model for a magnetic reconnection heated corona above a thin accretion disk in AGNs and Galactic black hole candidates(GBHCs). The basic assumptions are that (1) the magnetic reconnection heat is cooled down overwhelmingly by Compton scattering in the corona and that (2) thermal conduction is dominantly cooled by evaporation of the chromospheric plasma in the disk-corona interface before Compton cooling sets in. With these two basic equations as well as equi-partition of magnetic energy with gas energy in the disk, we can consistently determine the fraction of accretion energy dissipated in the corona without free parameters, and thus determine the temperature and all other quantities in both the corona and disk for given black hole mass and accretion rate. Then, we calculate the luminosity contributed from the disk and corona and the coronal flux weighted Compton $y$ parameter. It is found that, at a low luminosity (less than 0.1 Eddington luminosity) the spectrum is hard with energy spectral index of around 1, while at a high luminosity (larger than 0.1 Eddington luminosity) the spectrum can be either soft or hard. We also find that the situation is almost same for supermassive and stellar-mass black holes. We propose a new scenario for disk evolution during the quiescence of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae and X-ray novae. A hole created by evaporation of the inner disk material steadily expands towards larger radii, eventually removing thermally unstable portions of the disk. The disk is, however, not in a steady state, since a certain amount of angular momentum is continuously brought in by an incoming stream, whereas angular-momentum losses due to the evaporation and to the tidal action by a companion star are likely to be small in the quiescence. Accordingly, the total angular momentum of the disk monotonically increases, whereas an increase in the disk mass is somewhat slower because of the mass evaporation. This results in an expansion of the disk and an accumulation of mass in the outermost part of the disk. The quiescence will be terminated if a thermal instability is ignited before the disk expands to the critical radius for the 3:1 resonance between Kepler and orbital angular frequencies. If not, superhumps are expected during quiescence.

We analyse conditions of the innermost portion of an accretion disk and establish a set of equations for this region. A stable innermost region may exist, which can probably explain the observed UV and X-ray spectra, avoiding the unstable emission. We then discuss the detailed radial structure of a disk around a black hole for typical AGN parameters and obtain different kinds of M-Sigma relationships for different regions of a disk. On the basis of this, we discuss the stability. A new type of cycle is present, which we call a double 5 shaped cycle. In this cycle, the extent of accretion rate variability is much larger than that in dwarf nova cycles. This probably solves the problem of violent variability of AGN. In the meantime, the very high accretion rate at the hottest state in limit cycles in the unstable region may provide continuous injection of matter to the jet and power the relativistic motion of the jet.

We construct a standard thin disk model taking into account the pressure from both gas and radiation, the opacity contributed by both electron scattering and absorption, and the gravity from both a central object and a disk. A simple and powerful technique for solving the non-linear equations is presented. Through a numerical algorithm for the two equationl forβ, γ, ξ, all the disk quantities are expressed as the analytical function ofβ, γ, ξ. We also discuss the solutions in the limit casesβ → 0,β → 1 and the parameter range of the linear approximation. From the numerical solutions and limit analyses, we found that it is not necessary to include the self-gravity of the disk.

1H 0323+342 is one of the rare γ-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), a special subset of active galactic nuclei (AGN) owing to their hybrid behavior of both NLS1s and blazars. The rarity of such kind of sources makes their properties far from being understood. We analyze simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical monitoring observations of 1H 0323+342 performed by Swift over ~7 years. The UV/X-ray correlation and the broad band SED reveal that the X-ray band is dominated by the disk/corona emission during the observations. The large normalized excess variance of the X-ray variability detected with Suzaku suggests a relatively small black hole mass of the order of 107M⊙, consistent with the estimation based on the broad Hβ line in the optical band.

Thermal conduction between a cool accretion disk and a hot inner corona can result in either evaporation of the disk or condensation of the hot corona. At low mass accretion rates, evaporation dominates and can completely remove the inner disk. At higher mass accretion rates, condensation becomes more efficient in the very inner regions, so that part of the mass accretes via a weak (initially formed) inner disk which is separated from the outer disk by a fully evaporated region at mid radii. At still higher mass accretion rates, condensation dominates everywhere, so there is a continuous cool disk extending to the innermost stable circular orbit. We extend these calculations by including the effect of irradiation by the hot corona on the disk structure. The flux which is not reflected is reprocessed in the disk, adding to the intrinsic thermal emission from gravitational energy release. This increases the seed photons for Compton cooling of the hot corona, enhancing condensation of the hot flow and re-inforcing the residual inner disk rather than evaporating it. The formation of a cool disk in the innermost regions of black hole X-ray transient systems in the low hard state is investigated. Taking into account the combined cooling associated with the Compton and conductive energy transport processes in a corona, the radial structure of a disk is described for a range of mass accretion rates. The mass flow in an optically thick inner region can be maintained by the condensation of matter from a corona with the disk temperature and luminosity varying continuously as a function of the accretion rate. Although such a disk component can be present, the contribution of the optically thick disk component to the total luminosity can be small since the mass flow due to condensation in the optically thick disk underlying the corona can be significantly less than the mass flow rate in the corona. The model is applied to the observations of the low quiescent state of the black hole source GX 339-4 at luminosities of around $0.01 L_{Edd}$ and is able to explain the temperature of the thermal component at the observed luminosities. Since conductive cooling dominates Compton cooling at low mass accretion rates, the luminosity corresponding to the critical mass accretion rate above which a weak thermal disk component can be present in the low hard state is estimated to be as low as $0.001 L_{Edd}$., 30 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) detected in the X-ray radiation of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) is thought to originate from dynamical processes in the close vicinity of the black holes (BHs), and thus carries important physical information therein. Such a feature is extremely rare in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with supermassive BHs. Here we report on the detection of a possible X-ray QPO signal with a period of 3800\,s at a confidence level $>99.99\%$ in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) 1H~0707-495 in one data set in 0.2-10\,keV taken with {\it XMM-Newton}. The statistical significance is higher than that of most previously reported QPOs in AGNs. The QPO is highly coherent (quality factor $Q=\nu/\Delta\nu \geqslant 15$) with a high rms fractional variability ($\sim15\%$). A comprehensive analysis of the optical spectra of this AGN is also performed, yielding a central BH mass $5.2\times10^6\,M_{\odot}$ from the broad emission lines based on the scaling relation. The QPO follows closely the known frequency-BH mass relation, which spans from stellar-mass to supermassive BHs. The absence of the QPO in other observations of the object suggests it a transient phenomenon. We suggest that the (high-frequency) QPOs tend to occur in highly accreting BH systems, from BHXBs to supermassive BHs. Future precise estimation of the BH mass may be used to infer the BH spin from the QPO frequency., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL

The condensation of matter from a corona to a cool, optically thick inner disk is investigated for black hole X-ray transient systems in the low hard state. A description of a simple model for the exchange of energy and mass between corona and disk originating from thermal conduction is presented, taking into account the effect of Compton cooling of the corona by photons from the underlying disk. It is found that a weak, condensation-fed inner disk can be present in the low hard state of black hole transient systems for a range of luminosities which depend on the magnitude of the viscosity parameter. For $\alpha \sim 0.1-0.4$ an inner disk can exist for luminosities in the range $\sim 0.001- 0.02$ Eddington value. The model is applied to the X-ray observations of the black hole candidate sources GX 339-4 and Swift J1753.5-0127 in their low hard state. It is found that Compton cooling is important in the condensation process, leading to the maintenance of cool inner disks in both systems. As the results of the evaporation/condensation model are independent of the black hole mass, it is suggested that such inner cool disks may contribute to the optical and ultraviolet emission of low luminosity active galactic nuclei., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ (Dec. 10, 2007, Vol.671)

As a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) detected by Fermi/LAT in GeV γ-rays, 1H 0323+342 is a remarkable active galactic nucleus showing properties characteristic of both NLS1s and blazars. Here we present results of simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical monitoring observations on 1H 0323+342 taken with the UV/Optical Telescope and X-ray Telescope onboard the Swift satellite over six years from 2006. Overall, the object showed statistically correlated variations in both the UV and X-ray bands on timescales of years as well as on timescales of days. A deep Suzaku observation reveals X-ray variability on timescales as short as a few tens of thousand seconds, and an X-ray spectrum typical of Seyfert galaxies. The broadband spectral energy distribution, for which the data of UV and X-ray observations taken on 2009 July 26–27 were used, can be well modeled with a simple one-zone leptonic jet model plus accretion disk/corona emission. The latter is predominantly responsible for the UV/optical and X-ray (0.3–10 keV) emission and their observed variations. The correlated UV–X-ray variability on the timescale of days is consistent with reprocessing of the X-ray radiation by the accretion disk. The shortest timescale and large normalized excess variance of the X-ray variability detected with Suzaku suggest a relatively small black hole mass of the order of , consistent with the estimation based on the broad Hβ line in the optical.

The theory of coronal evaporation predicts the formation of an inner hole in the cool thin accretion disk for mass accretion rates below a certain value (approximate to 1/50 of the Eddington mass accretion rate) and the sudden disappearance of this hole when the mass accretion rate rises above that value. The inner edge of the standard thin disk then suddenly shifts inward vvvvfrom about a few hundred Schwarzschild radii to the last stable orbit. This appears to quantitatively account for the observed transitions between hard and soft spectral states at critical luminosities. Due to the evaporation process the matter accreting in the geometrically thin disk changes to a hot coronal flow which proceeds towards the black hole as an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF; for a review see Narayan et al. 1998).

We raise the question whether in the past a disk could have existed in our Galactic Center which has disappeared now. Our model for the interaction of a cool disk and a hot corona above (Liu et al. 2004) allows to estimate an upper limit for the mass that might have been present in a putative accretion disk after a last star forming event, but would now have evaporated by coronal action.

In neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries the transitions between the two spectral states, hard and soft, signals the change between accretion via a hot advection-dominated flow(ADAF) and disk accretion. In a few cases the hard/soft transition were observed during the rise to the nova outburst, mostly only the soft/hard transition during the luminosity decrease. Surprisingly the luminosities at the second transition is always lower by a factor of 3 to 5. A model for this hysteresis was presented in a preceding paper: It was shown that this switch in the accretion mode at different mass accretion rates and therefore different luminosities is caused by the different amount of Compton cooling or heating of the accretion disk corona as it is irradiated by hard or soft radiation from the central light source, respectively. We now give detailed results on the dependence on hardness of this radiation and on radiation efficiency. We study the possibility of a cool disk existing in the Galactic Center in the framework of the disk-corona evaporation/condensation model. Assuming an inactive disk, a hot corona should form above the disk since there is a continuous supply of hot gas from stellar winds of the close-by massive stars. Whether the cool disk can survive depends on the mass exchange between the disk and corona. If the disk-corona interaction is dominated by evaporation and the rate is larger than the Bondi accretion rate in the Galactic Center, the disk will be depleted within a certain time period and no persistent disk will exist. On the other hand, if the interaction results in hot gas steadily condensing into the disk, an inactive cool disk might survive. For this case we further investigate the Bremsstrahlung radiation from the hot corona and compare it with the observed X-ray luminosity. Our model shows that, for standard viscosity in the corona (alpha=0.3), the mass evaporation rate is much higher than the Bondi accretion rate and the coronal density is much larger than that inferred from Chandra observations. Recent observations reveal that a cool disk may survive in the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) for some black hole X-ray binaries in the low/hard state. The spectrum is characterized by a power law with a photon index Γ ~ 1.5-2.1 in the range of 2-10 keV and a weak disk component with temperature of ~ 0.2 keV. The formation of such a cool disk in the most inner region of black hole X-ray binaries at the low/hard state is investigated within the framework of disk accretion fed by condensation of hot corona. We also calculate the emergent spectra of the inner disk and corona. It's found that our model can very well explain the spectral features of GX 339-4 and Cyg X-1, in which the thin disk may exist at ISCO in the low/hard state.

The concept of an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), with or without wind loss, was used to describe the spectra of the galactic center source Sgr A*, low-luminosity AGN and nuclei of elliptical galaxies (including M87). The spectral fits of various authors show that the transition from the geometrically thin disk to the hot flow occurs at quite different distances, apparently not uniquely related to the mass flow rate in the disk. We compare these results with the results of theoretical modeling where we determine the truncation of the thin outer disk from the efficiency of mass evaporation. The physics is the same as in the case of galactic black holes systems (Meyer et al. 2000b). For the observationally indicated mass flow rates our model predicts a truncation at 10^3 to 10^4 Schwarzschild radii. The magnitude of the viscosity and magnetic field parameters in hot accretion flows is investigated in low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). Theoretical studies show that a geometrically thin, optically thick disk is truncated at mass accretion rates less than a critical value by mass evaporated vertically from the disk to the corona, with the truncated region replaced by an advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF). The critical accretion rate for such a truncation is a function of the viscosity and magnetic field. Observations of X-ray photon indices and spectral fits of a number of LLAGNs published in the literature provide an estimate of the critical rate of mass accretion and the truncation radius respectively. By comparing the observational results with theoretical predictions, the viscosity and magnetic field parameters in the hot accretion flow region are estimated. Specifically, the mass accretion rates inferred in different sources constrain the viscosity parameter, whereas the truncation radii of the disk, as inferred from spectral fits, further constrain the magnetic field parameter. It is found that the value of the viscosity parameter in the corona/ADAF ranges from 0.17 to 0.5, with values clustered about 0.2-0.3. Magnetic pressure is required by the relatively small truncation radii for some LLAGNs and is found to be as high as its equipartition value with the gas pressure. The inferred values of the viscosity parameter are in agreement with those obtained from the observations of non-stationary accretion in stellar mass black hole X-ray transients. This consistency provides support for the paradigm that a geometrically thin disk is truncated by means of a mass evaporation process from the disk to the corona at low mass accretion rates., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

Using three criteria, we discuss the observational distinction between relativistic beaming and pure accretion for 69 active galaxies, including Seyferts, Quasars, and BL Lac objects. The first criterion is whether the inferred efficiency of the conversion of accreted matter into energy is greater than 0.1 or not. The second one is whether the observed flux is larger than the classical Eddington luminosity or not. The third is concerned in the strong coupling of geometrical and physical effects in jets.
