Bivariate analyses examined differences between pain groups stratified by age, sex, income, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) scores.Results: Pain prevalence was 20.2% (n=4007). Abstract

International audience; In the framework of nuclear facilities dismantling, there is a strong need to obtain accu-rate analytical results on remaining radioactivity on different solid materials (concrete, met-al, ). Based on different commercial developments dedicated to biological researches, the Digital Autoradiography method has already been used for different real characterizations of nuclear wastes. Different developments have proved the efficiency of the Autoradiog-raphy Technique but drawbacks have been identified and the industrial research project MAUD has proposed several innovative solutions to improve the use of the technique for characterization.

Abstract

International audience; The characterization and the localization of the radiological contamination on surfaces is of first importance for the decommissioning process of a nuclear facility. Yet, there is cur-rently no device capable of giving a real-time image of the surface contamination by et945; or et946; emitters. The MAUD project (supported by the French agency ANDRA) is aiming at develop-ing a new type of portable detector capable of reconstructing the image of the radioactivity, in real-time, on a solid surface.In this paper, we present the technological developments we performed in order to real-ize the prototype of the MAUD project. We discuss the optimization of the detector type, size and thickness as well as the choice of the read-out electronic. The characterization of the detector response to ionizing radiations will be shown and compared to the numerical simulation used during the development.

Abstract

Worldwide data for cancer survival are scarce. We aimed to initiate worldwide surveillance of cancer survival by central analysis of population-based registry data, as a metric of the eff ectiveness of health systems, and to inform global policy on cancer control. Methods Individual tumour records were submitted by 279 population-based cancer registries in 67 countries for 25·7 million adults (age 15–99 years) and 75 000 children (age 0–14 years) diagnosed with cancer during 1995–2009 and followed up to Dec 31, 2009, or later. We looked at cancers of the stomach, colon, rectum, liver, lung, breast (women), cervix, ovary, and prostate in adults, and adult and childhood leukaemia. Standardised quality control procedures were applied; errors were corrected by the registry concerned. We estimated 5-year net survival, adjusted for background mortality in every country or region by age (single year), sex, and calendar year, and by race or ethnic origin in some countries. Estimates were age-standardised with the International Cancer Survival Standard weights. Findings 5-year survival from colon, rectal, and breast cancers has increased steadily in most developed countries. For patients diagnosed during 2005–09, survival for colon and rectal cancer reached 60% or more in 22 countries around the world; for breast cancer, 5-year survival rose to 85% or higher in 17 countries worldwide. Liver and lung cancer remain lethal in all nations: for both cancers, 5-year survival is below 20% everywhere in Europe, in the range 15–19% in North America, and as low as 7–9% in Mongolia and Thailand. Striking rises in 5-year survival from prostate cancer have occurred in many countries: survival rose by 10–20% between 1995–99 and 2005–09 in 22 countries in South America, Asia, and Europe, but survival still varies widely around the world, from less than 60% in Bulgaria and Thailand to 95% or more in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the USA. For cervical cancer, national estimates of 5-year survival range from less than 50% to more than 70%; regional variations are much wider, and improvements between 1995–99 and 2005–09 have generally been slight. For women diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005–09, 5-year survival was 40% or higher only in Ecuador, the USA, and 17 countries in Asia and Europe. 5-year survival for stomach cancer in 2005–09 was high (54–58%) in Japan and South Korea, compared with less than 40% in other countries. By contrast, 5-year survival from adult leukaemia in Japan and South Korea (18–23%) is lower than in most other countries. 5-year survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is less than 60% in several countries, but as high as 90% in Canada and four European countries, which suggests major defi ciencies in the management of a largely curable disease. Interpretation International comparison of survival trends reveals very wide diff erences that are likely to be attributable to diff erences in access to early diagnosis and optimum treatment. Abstract

Exposure of the French population to ionising radiation is mainly due to natural radiation (i.e. exposure through: inhalation of radon decay products, external radiation of terrestrial and cosmic origin and water and food ingestion). In an epidemiological context, it is necessary to estimate as precisely as possible the population exposure, in order to study its influence on health indicators. In this aim, indicators of population exposure should be created taking into account results of environmental measurements by controlling the different factors that may influence these measurements (dwelling characteristics, seasonal variations, population density). The distribution of these exposures should also be studied at different geographical levels (department, job area). This work updates the estimation of the French population exposure to natural radiation. Radon exposure indicators have been based on concentrations measured in dwellings, corrected on season and dwelling characteristics (departmental range: 19-297 Bq/m3. Indicators of terrestrial gamma ray exposure have been based on measured indoor and outdoor dose rates adjusted on dwelling characteristics (22-95 nSv/h). Cosmic ray exposure has been evaluated from altitude and weighted by population density (0.27-0.38 mSv/yr). Due to these three components, the effective annual dose was estimated to be at 2.2 mSv. © 2004 EDP Sciences.; L'exposition aux rayonnements ionisants de la population française est due en majeure partie à la radioactivité naturelle (radon, irradiations externes d'origine tellurique et cosmique, ingestion d'eau et d'aliments). Dans un contexte épidémiologique, il est nécessaire d'estimer au mieux l'exposition de la population afin de pouvoir l'étudier conjointement à des indicateurs sanitaires. Dans cet objectif, des indicateurs d'exposition doivent être créés en prenant en compte les mesures environnementales et en contrôlant les facteurs de variabilité (caractéristiques de l'habitat, variations saisonnières, densité de population). La distribution des expositions doit également pouvoir être étudiée à différents niveaux géographiques (département, zone d'emploi). Le présent travail constitue une mise à jour de l'estimation de l'exposition de la population française à la radioactivité naturelle. Les indicateurs d'exposition au radon domestique reposent sur les concentrations mesurées, corrigées pour la saison et les caractéristiques d'habitat (variation départementale : 19–297 Bq/m3). Les indicateurs d'exposition au rayonnement gamma d'origine tellurique reposent sur les débits de dose mesurés, redressés sur le type d'habitat (22–95 nSv/h). L'exposition aux rayonnements cosmiques est évaluée à partir de l'altitude et pondérée sur la densité de population (0,27–0,38 mSv/an). La dose efficace annuelle due à ces trois composantes est estimée à 2,2 mSv.

43. Occupational Contact Dermatitis in 10,582 French Patients Reported between 2004 and 2007: A Descriptive Study.

Abstract

Background: Limited epidemiological data are available in France for occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), a non- infectious inflammatory skin condition arising from direct skin contact with substances used in the workplace. Objective: To estimate the occurrence of, and number of workdays lost to, OCD in France. Methods: Descriptive study of all OCD declared by salaried workers and recognised as occupational disease in France over a 4-year period. Results: 10,582 OCD cases were reported, representing 9.6% of all occupational diseases recognised. The estimated annual incidence of OCD recognised was 15.72/100,000 salaried workers (i.e. 146.87/100,000 employees for all occupational diseases). OCD cases were mainly in the construction and public works industries with 3,057 (36.7%) salaried workers affected. In the services sector, OCD predominantly affected employees aged less than 30 years (41%), particularly hairdressers (69%). OCD accounted for the loss of 395,069 working days. Abstract

Because cracks control the global mechanical and transport properties of crystalline rocks, it is of a crucial importance to suitably determine their aperture distribution, which evolves through alteration processes and rock weathering. Due to the high variability of crack networks in rocks, a multiscale approach is needed. The 14C‐PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) method was developed to determine crack apertures using a set of artificial crack samples with different controlled apertures and tilt angles and also using Monte Carlo simulations. The experiments and simulations show the same result: the estimation of apparent aperture wA was successful regardless of tilt angle, even if the estimates are less accurate for low tilt angles (<30°). The uncertainties on the estimation of the real crack aperture wR arise from the unknown tilt angle. The ability of the 14C‐PMMA autoradiography method to estimate crack aperture distributions in rock samples was successfully confirmed on a sample of Grimsel granodiorite. Abstract

Tosudite, a regularly interstratified chlorite-smectite, crystallises as an alteration mineral of several preexisting Al-bearing silicates (feldspars, kaolin minerals, chlorites) present in arkosic sandstones hosted in uranium deposits in Niger. X-ray diffraction patterns show a sharp superstructure at 29-29.6 angstrom for an air-dried state and a peak at 30.8-31.6 angstrom following ethylene glycol solvation. Microprobe analysis allowed specification of the component layers of this mixed-layer mineral. The chlorite is a di-trioctahedral type analogous to sudoite (Si3Al4Mg2(OH)8), and the smectite component is a low-charge montmorillonite type (Si4Al1.67Mg0.33M+0.33(OH)4). Tosudite is characterised by large Al2O3 and MgO contents and small Fe content; its composition corresponds approximately to the formula ((Si7Al)O20(Al4.5Mg2.3Fe3+0.2) M+0.3(OH)10), where octahedral occupancy is about 7. Scanning electron microscope observations show that tosudite is closely associated with some uranium minerals: tosudite crystallisation occurred during a late alteration event which post-dates burial diagenesis and during which uranium was remobilised by Mg-rich oxidising fluids. Both the origin and age of the different stages of water-rock interaction and their relationship with the tectonothermal history of this part of the Tim Mersoi basin are of prime importance to improving the genetic model of Nigerian uranium deposits.
