1. Radially distributed charging time constants at an electrode-solution interface

Abstract: Abstract An electrochemically homogeneous electrode-solution interface should be understood as spatially invariant in both terms of intrinsic reactivity for the electrode side and electrical resistance mainly for the solution side. The latter remains presumably assumed in almost all cases. However, by using optical microscopy to spatially resolve the classic redox electrochemistry occurring at the whole surface of a gold macroelectrode, we discover that the electron transfer occurs always significantly sooner (by milliseconds), rather than faster in essence, at the radial coordinates closer to the electrode periphery than the very center. So is the charging process when there is no electron transfer. Based on optical measurements of the interfacial impedance, this spatially unsynchronized electron transfer is attributed to a radially non-uniform distribution of solution resistance. We accordingly manage to eliminate the heterogeneity by engineering the solution resistance distribution. The revealed spatially-dependent charging time ‘constant’ (to be questioned) would help paint our overall fundamental picture of electrode kinetics.

2. Unveiling the exceptional evolution of solute aggregates: From micro to trace, solution to interface

Abstract: Abstract Existential state of solutes substantially affects the efficiency and direction of various chemical and biological processes, about which current consensus is still limited at macro and micro levels. At the trace level, solutes assume a pivotal role across a spectrum of critical fields. However, their existential states, especially at interfaces, remain largely elusive. Herein, an exceptional evolution of solute molecules is unveiled from micro to trace, solution to interface, with the aid of surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy, extinction, DLS and theoretical simulations. Given predominant existence of monomers within the solution, these aggregates dominate the interfacial behavior of solute molecules. Moreover, a universal, aggregate‐controlled mechanism is demonstrated that aggregates triggered by cosolvent, which can dramatically promote efficiency of catalytic reactions. The results provide novel insights into the interaction mechanisms between reactants and catalysts, potentially offering fresh perspectives for the manipulation of multiphase catalysis and related biological processes.

Abstract: The determination of the finding probability of submarine-launched acoustic homing torpedoes significantly affects tactical formulation. Conventional analytical and statistical algorithms fail to balance the speed and precision of probability assessment. In response to this issue, this paper introduced a model for assessing the finding probability based on Gaussian process regression. Additionally, a method was proposed for generating a training dataset based on the analytical model. Numerical simulations for assessing the finding probability were conducted within a specific battlefield scenario. The outcomes illustrate the superior assessment effect of the proposed method, offering theoretical support for decision-making in relevant battlefield contexts.

4. Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis for Symptomatic Intracranial Atherosclerotic Arterial Steno‐Occlusive Disease: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes

Abstract: Background This study investigated the long‐term clinical and angiographic outcomes of encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis treatment for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic arterial steno‐occlusive disease to further evaluate the potential therapeutic role of encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis in this population. Methods and Results A total of 152 adult patients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic arterial steno‐occlusive disease who were treated with encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis and intensive medical management across 3 tertiary centers in China between January 2011 and September 2019 were retrospectively included. The primary outcomes were defined as postoperative cerebrovascular events, including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. The postoperative neovascularization was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by using angiography. Clinical, radiological, and long‐term follow‐up data were analyzed using Cox regression, logistic regression, and linear regression analyses. Primary outcome rates were 3.2% (5/152) within 30 days, 6.6% (10/152) within 2 years, 9.2% (14/152) within 5 years, and 11.1% (17/152) during a median 9.13 years follow‐up. Initial infarction symptoms were positively associated with recurrent ischemic stroke. Additionally, posterior circulation involvement and coexisting cardiac disease indicated poorer neurological status, whereas encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis neovascularization efficacy was negatively associated with older age and vascular risk factors but positively associated with posterior circulation involvement. Conclusions Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis plus intensive medical management appears efficacious and safe for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic arterial steno‐occlusive disease, with low perioperative risk and favorable long‐term results. Further prospective trials are needed to verify its efficacy and determine the optimal patient selection criteria.

5. Noise learning of instruments for high-contrast, high-resolution and fast hyperspectral microscopy and nanoscopy

Abstract: Abstract The low scattering efficiency of Raman scattering makes it challenging to simultaneously achieve good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), high imaging speed, and adequate spatial and spectral resolutions. Here, we report a noise learning (NL) approach that estimates the intrinsic noise distribution of each instrument by statistically learning the noise in the pixel-spatial frequency domain. The estimated noise is then removed from the noisy spectra. This enhances the SNR by ca. 10 folds, and suppresses the mean-square error by almost 150 folds. NL allows us to improve the positioning accuracy and spatial resolution and largely eliminates the impact of thermal drift on tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopic nanoimaging. NL is also applicable to enhance SNR in fluorescence and photoluminescence imaging. Our method manages the ground truth spectra and the instrumental noise simultaneously within the training dataset, which bypasses the tedious labelling of huge dataset required in conventional deep learning, potentially shifting deep learning from sample-dependent to instrument-dependent.

6. A Brain Network Analysis Model for Motion Sickness in Electric Vehicles Based on EEG and fNIRS Signal Fusion

Abstract: Motion sickness is a common issue in electric vehicles, significantly impacting passenger comfort. This study aims to develop a functional brain network analysis model by integrating electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals to evaluate motion sickness symptoms. During real-world testing with the Feifan F7 series of new energy-electric vehicles from SAIC Motor Corp, data were collected from 32 participants. The EEG signals were divided into four frequency bands: delta-range, theta-range, alpha-range, and beta-range, and brain oxygenation variation was calculated from the fNIRS signals. Functional connectivity between brain regions was measured to construct functional brain network models for motion sickness analysis. A motion sickness detection model was developed using a graph convolutional network (GCN) to integrate EEG and fNIRS data. Our results show significant differences in brain functional connectivity between participants in motion and non-motion sickness states. The model that combined fNIRS data with high-frequency EEG signals achieved the best performance, improving the F1 score by 11.4% compared to using EEG data alone and by 8.2% compared to using fNIRS data alone. These results highlight the effectiveness of integrating EEG and fNIRS signals using GCN for motion sickness detection. They demonstrate the model’s superiority over single-modality approaches, showcasing its potential for real-world applications in electric vehicles.

7. Challenges and support needs in psychological and physical health among pilots: a qualitative study

Abstract: IntroductionPhysical and mental health problems among pilots affect their working state and impact flight safety. Although pilots’ physical and mental health problems have become increasingly prominent, their health has not been taken seriously. This study aimed to clarify challenges and support needs related to psychological and physical health among pilots to inform development of a more scientific and comprehensive physical and mental health system for civil aviation pilots.MethodsThis qualitative study recruited pilots from nine civil aviation companies. Focus group interviews via an online conference platform were conducted in August 2022. Colaizzi analysis was used to derive themes from the data and explore pilots’ experiences, challenges, and support needs.ResultsThe main sub-themes capturing pilots’ psychological and physical health challenges were: (1) imbalance between family life and work; (2) pressure from assessment and physical examination eligibility requirements; (3) pressure from worries about being infected with COVID-19; (4) nutrition deficiency during working hours; (5) changes in eating habits because of the COVID-19 pandemic; (6) sleep deprivation; (7) occupational diseases; (8) lack of support from the company in coping with stress; (9) pilots’ yearly examination standards; (10) support with sports equipment; (11) respecting planned rest time; and (12) isolation periods.DiscussionThe interviewed pilots experienced major psychological pressure from various sources, and their physical health condition was concerning. We offer several suggestions that could be addressed to improve pilots’ physical and mental health. However, more research is needed to compare standard health measures for pilots around the world in order to improve their physical and mental health and contribute to overall aviation safety.

8. SYN1 variant causes X-linked neurodevelopmental disorders: a case report of variable clinical phenotypes in siblings

Abstract: The SYN1 gene encodes synapsin I, variants within the SYN1 gene are linked to X-linked neurodevelopmental disorders with high clinical heterogeneity, with reflex epilepsies (REs) being a representative clinical manifestation. This report analyzes a Chinese pedigree affected by seizures associated with SYN1 variants and explores the genotype–phenotype correlation. The proband, a 9-year-old boy, experienced seizures triggered by bathing at the age of 3, followed by recurrent absence seizures, behavioral issues, and learning difficulties. His elder brother exhibited a distinct clinical phenotype, experiencing sudden seizures during sleep at the age of 16, accompanied by hippocampal sclerosis. Whole exome sequencing (WES) confirmed a pathogenic SYN1 variant, c.1647_1650dup (p. Ser551Argfs*134), inherited in an X-linked manner from their mother. Notably, this variant displayed diverse clinical phenotypes in the two brothers and one previously reported case in the literature. Retrospective examination of SYN1 variants revealed an association between truncating variants and the pathogenicity of REs, and non-truncating variants are more related to developmental delay/intellectual disability (DD/ID). In summary, this study contributes to understanding complex neurodevelopmental disorders associated with SYN1, highlighting the clinical heterogeneity of gene variants and emphasizing the necessity for comprehensive genetic analysis in elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms of such diseases.

Abstract: Location service features are enabled in 5G to allow new and innovative location-based services to be developed for kinds of scenarios and the key performance requirements are identified by 3GPP.Firstly, the planning of location service feature in each standard release of 5G was introduced based on the standard process of 5G high-accuracy positioning in 3GPP.Secondly, 5G network-assisted BeiDou navigation satellite system was studied, including the positioning technologies and the standard progress of A-BDS in 3GPP.Thirdly, the network architecture, key technologies and the standards progress for sidelink positioning in 5G were introduced.Finally, the evolution of 6G positioning was analyzed.

10. Assessing cognitive workloads of assembly workers during multi-task switching

Abstract: Abstract Complex assembly tasks with multiple manual operations and steps often require rapid judgment and action under time pressure and cause most human-related errors. The task switching and action transitions are major sources of these errors. This study intends to implement an electroencephalography (EEG) approach to quantitatively evaluate the mental workload during task switching and transition. The time–frequency and spectrum analysis were utilized to compute and reflect the task demand between the intervals of individual tasks. This study developed an experiment to validate the proposed assessment approach and benchmark the results with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration task load index (NASA-TLX) subjective evaluation scale analysis. The results show that the average value of the power spectral densities (PSDs) of the gamma band signal of the AF4 channel and the beta band signal of Channel F3 show distinctive signal patterns among task stages and intervals. During the interval between the idling stage and the part selection stage, the peak of the PSD envelope increased from 18 to 27 Hz, suggesting advanced cognition increases the mental workload of the interval between different tasks. Therefore, the task switching period cannot be regarded as rest and need to be optimized with better task organization.

11. Mineralogical erosion and precipitation characteristics and their effects on adsorption property of shale during scCO2-H2O-shale interaction

Abstract: Understanding the material composition and pore structure variation of shale gas reservoirs during supercritical CO2-shale interaction is of essence to achieve CO2 sequestration and enhanced natural gas production. The storage space evolution associated with mineral corrosion has been well reported, but the studies on the secondary precipitation and plugging characteristics are still insufficient, and there is particularly a lack of theoretical and experimental investigations. To analyze mineralogical corrosion/precipitation characteristics and its effects on adsorption capacity with different reaction time (6‒30 days) and thus demonstrate the fluid-solid interface kinetics and evolution laws of pore structure, the supercritical CO2 (scCO2)-water-shale reaction, scanning electron mi-croscope (SEM), low-pressure N2 adsorption and isothermal adsorption experiments were primarily conducted using the Lower Silurian Longmaxi shales in the southern Sichuan Basin. The results reveal that the content of calcium and potassium minerals in the sample after the reaction gradually decreases with time, leading to an increase of Ca2+ and K+ concentration in the solution. Calcite minerals are notably corroded across the reaction, accompanied by a number of carbonate precipitates that converge on the surface. Corrosion generally expands the initial pore space, resulting in a volumetric increase of pores ranging from 3.29 to 4.50 nm. But the precipitation process may lead to pore space plugging and correspondingly shrinks the increments of the pore volume. As a result of corrosion and precipitation, the surface fractal dimension D1 increases slightly, while the structure fractal dimension D2 shows a reducing trend, which intensifies pore heterogeneity. In general, mineralogical corrosion can enlarge the samples’ storage space, initiate more CO2 molecules to be polarized, and thus strengthen interactions between scCO2 fluids and shale. These are the main reasons for the enhancement of adsorption capacity and adsorption potential. There is no remarkable change in the adsorption and adsorption potential of the sample before and after precipitation, indicating that the precipitation effect has a minor impact on adsorption capacity. Insights into corrosion and precipitation mechanisms and their effects on storage space are a matter of enlightenment for high-efficiency and long-term CO2 geo-sequestration.

12. STGIC: A graph and image convolution-based method for spatial transcriptomic clustering.

Abstract: Spatial transcriptomic (ST) clustering employs spatial and transcription information to group spots spatially coherent and transcriptionally similar together into the same spatial domain. Graph convolution network (GCN) and graph attention network (GAT), fed with spatial coordinates derived adjacency and transcription profile derived feature matrix are often used to solve the problem. Our proposed method STGIC (spatial transcriptomic clustering with graph and image convolution) is designed for techniques with regular lattices on chips. It utilizes an adaptive graph convolution (AGC) to get high quality pseudo-labels and then resorts to dilated convolution framework (DCF) for virtual image converted from gene expression information and spatial coordinates of spots. The dilation rates and kernel sizes are set appropriately and updating of weight values in the kernels is made to be subject to the spatial distance from the position of corresponding elements to kernel centers so that feature extraction of each spot is better guided by spatial distance to neighbor spots. Self-supervision realized by Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence, spatial continuity loss and cross entropy calculated among spots with high confidence pseudo-labels make up the training objective of DCF. STGIC attains state-of-the-art (SOTA) clustering performance on the benchmark dataset of 10x Visium human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Besides, it's capable of depicting fine structures of other tissues from other species as well as guiding the identification of marker genes. Also, STGIC is expandable to Stereo-seq data with high spatial resolution.

13. Clinical and genetic factors associated with contralateral progression in unilateral moyamoya disease: Longitudinal and Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to explore the long-term outcome of unilateral moyamoya disease and predict the clinical and genetic factors associated with contralateral progression in unilateral moyamoya disease. Methods: We retrospectively recruited unilateral moyamoya disease patients with available genetic data who underwent encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) surgery at our institution from January 2009 to November 2017. Long-term follow-up data, including clinical outcomes, angiographic features, and genetic information, were analyzed. Results: A total of 83 unilateral moyamoya disease patients with available genetic data were enrolled in our study. The mean duration of clinical follow-up was 7.9 ± 2.0 years. Among all patients, 19 patients demonstrated contralateral progression to bilateral disease. Heterozygous Ring Finger Protein 213 p.R4810K mutations occurred significantly more frequently in unilateral moyamoya disease patients with contralateral progression. Furthermore, patients with contralateral progression typically demonstrated an earlier age of onset than those with non-progressing unilateral moyamoya disease. In the contralateral progression group, posterior circulation involvement was observed in 11 (11/19, 57.9%) patients compared to 12 (12/64, 18.8%) in the non-contralateral progression group (P = 0.001). The time to peak of cerebral perfusion and neurological status showed significant postoperative improvement. Conclusion: Long-term follow-up revealed that the EDAS procedure might provide benefits for unilateral moyamoya disease patients. Ring Finger Protein 213 p.R4810K mutations, younger age, and posterior circulation involvement might predict the contralateral progression of unilateral moyamoya disease.

14. A Survey on 3D Skeleton-Based Action Recognition Using Learning Method

Abstract: Three-dimensional skeleton-based action recognition (3D SAR) has gained important attention within the computer vision community, owing to the inherent advantages offered by skeleton data. As a result, a plethora of impressive works, including those based on conventional handcrafted features and learned feature extraction methods, have been conducted over the years. However, prior surveys on action recognition have primarily focused on video or red-green-blue (RGB) data-dominated approaches, with limited coverage of reviews related to skeleton data. Furthermore, despite the extensive application of deep learning methods in this field, there has been a notable absence of research that provides an introductory or comprehensive review from the perspective of deep learning architectures. To address these limitations, this survey first underscores the importance of action recognition and emphasizes the significance of 3-dimensional (3D) skeleton data as a valuable modality. Subsequently, we provide a comprehensive introduction to mainstream action recognition techniques based on 4 fundamental deep architectures, i.e., recurrent neural networks, convolutional neural networks, graph convolutional network, and Transformers. All methods with the corresponding architectures are then presented in a data-driven manner with detailed discussion. Finally, we offer insights into the current largest 3D skeleton dataset, NTU-RGB+D, and its new edition, NTU-RGB+D 120, along with an overview of several top-performing algorithms on these datasets. To the best of our knowledge, this research represents the first comprehensive discussion of deep learning-based action recognition using 3D skeleton data.

15. Three novel alleles of OsGS1 developed by base-editing-mediated artificial evolution confer glufosinate tolerance in rice

Abstract: Only few glufosinate-tolerant genes, such as phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT) and bialaphos resistance (bar) identified from Streptomyces, are currently available for developing genetically modified rice in agricultural application. Following the rapid development of genome editing technology, generation of novel glufosinate-tolerant gene resources through artificial evolution of endogenous genes is more promising and highly desirable in rice molecular breeding program. In this study, the endogenous Glutamine synthetase1 (OsGS1) was artificially evolved by base-editing-mediated gene evolution (BEMGE) in rice cells to create novel alleles conferring glufosinate tolerance in rice germplasms. Two novel glufosinate-tolerant OsGS1 alleles (OsGS1-AVPS and OsGS1-+AF) and one reported tolerant allele (OsGS1-SGTA) were successfully identified from approximately 4200 independent hygromycin-tolerant calli. Germination assays and spray tests revealed that these three OsGS1 alleles confer glufosinate tolerance in rice. Furthermore, OsGS1-AVPS and OsGS1-SGTA were quickly deployed into the elite rice cultivar Nangeng 46 through precise base editing. Overall, our results demonstrate the feasibility of developing glufosinate-tolerant rice by editing an endogenous rice gene in molecular breeding programs.

16. Structural Features, Physicochemical Properties, and In Vitro Digestibility of the Starch-Lipid Complexes Formed between High Amylose Starch and Stearic Acid or Potassium Stearate

Abstract: Starch-lipid complexes were prepared from high amylose starch (HAS) with stearic acid (SA) or potassium stearate (PS) at different molar concentrations. The complexes (HAS-PS) formed between HAS and PS showed polyelectrolyte characteristics with ζ-potential ranging from −22.2 to −32.8 mV, and the electrostatic repulsion between anionic charges restricted the starch chain reassociation and facilitated the formation of V-type crystalline structures upon cooling. The hydrophobic effects enabled recrystallization of the SA, and the HAS-SA complexes exhibited weaker V-type crystalline structures than the HAS-PS complexes; both HAS-SA/PS complexes were of a similar “mass fractal” type, with a dimension varied from 2.15 to 2.96. The HAS-SA complexes had a considerable content of resistant starch (RS, 16.1~29.2%), whereas negligible RS was found in the HAS-PS complexes. The findings from the present study imply that the molecular order of starch chains and the macro-structures of starch particles are more important to regulate the digestibility of starch-lipid complexes than the crystalline structures.

Abstract: Carbon fiber reinforced carbon-based composites are considered to be an ideal lightweight material with exceptional high-temperature mechanical performance. Nevertheless, their high conductivity result in a strong reflection rather than absorption of electromagnetic wave (EMW) for the stealth application. To address this challenge, a novel carbon-based composite made of multi-scale lossy phases (Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), SiC nanowires (SiCnws), and Carbon fiber (Cf)) and impedance matching phase (SiOC ceramic) was fabricated by the precursor-derived method. The prepared SiCnws/CNTs/Cf-C/SiOC (SCC-CS) composites exhibit an effective absorption (EAB) of 2.4 GHz at a thickness of 1.9 mm and a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −58.44 dB (99% absorption) in the X band. The EMW absorption of the composite is attributed to the multiple loss mechanisms and favorable impedance matching with free space, caused by the multi-conductive phase and SiOC in the composite. In addition, the fabricated composites also have thermal insulation properties and can effectively achieve radar cross-sectional (RCS) reduction, which are promising aerospace composites with the integration of structure and function.

Abstract: Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Here, we present a protocol containing two in vitro approaches to study such interactions. We first describe an indirect co-culture system to study the regulation of stemness markers in cancer cells by secreted factors from ECs. Abstract: The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract: Sargassaceae, the most abundant family in Fucales, was recently formed through the merging of the two former families Sargassaceae and Cystoseiraceae. It is widely distributed in the world’s oceans, notably in tropical coastal regions, with the exception of the coasts of Antarctica and South America. Numerous bioactivities have been discovered through investigations of the chemical diversity of the Sargassaceae family. The secondary metabolites with unique structures found in this family have been classified as terpenoids, phlorotannins, and steroids, among others. These compounds have exhibited potent pharmacological activities. This review describes the new discovered compounds from Sargassaceae species and their associated bioactivities, citing 136 references covering from March 1975 to August 2023.

22. Dynamic Changes and Associated Clinical Value of Serum Soluble α-Klotho Protein for Patients with Severe Craniocerebral Injury

Abstract: Background The serum soluble α-Klotho protein level may be associated with a lower risk and progression of multiple nervous system diseases. However, there are few reports concerning its dynamic changes and prognostic value in patients with craniocerebral injury. Objective To assess the dynamic changes of serum soluble α-Klotho protein level and associated prognostic value in patients with serious craniocerebral injury. Methods Participants were recruited from Shanxi Bethune Hospital from July 2019 to September 2020, including 103 cases of severe craniocerebral injury with surgical treatment and postoperative monitoring from the ICU (case group, including 74 survived and 29 decreased as of the 28th day posterior to admission) , and 50 physical examinees (healthy controls) . Clinical data of case group were collected. ELISA was used to measure the serum soluble α-Klotho protein level for all participants on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th days posterior to study enrollment. Abstract: Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Abstract: Abstract The performance and efficiency of a baler deteriorate as a result of gearbox failure. One way to overcome this challenge is to select appropriate fault feature parameters for fault diagnosis and monitoring gearboxes. This paper proposes a fault feature selection method using an improved adaptive genetic algorithm for a baler gearbox. This method directly obtains the minimum fault feature parameter set that is most sensitive to fault features through attribute reduction. The main benefit of the improved adaptive genetic algorithm is its excellent performance in terms of the efficiency of attribute reduction without requiring prior information. Therefore, this method should be capable of timely diagnosis and monitoring. Experimental validation was performed and promising findings highlighting the relationship between diagnosis results and faults were obtained. The results indicate that when using the improved genetic algorithm to reduce 12 fault characteristic parameters to three without a priori information, 100% fault diagnosis accuracy can be achieved based on these fault characteristics and the time required for fault feature parameter selection using the improved genetic algorithm is reduced by half compared to traditional methods. The proposed method provides important insights into the instant fault diagnosis and fault monitoring of mechanical devices.

25. Global optimization of hyper-parameters in reservoir computing

Abstract: Reservoir computing has emerged as a powerful and efficient machine learning tool especially in the reconstruction of many complex systems even for chaotic systems only based on the observational data. Though fruitful advances have been extensively studied, how to capture the art of hyper-parameter settings to construct efficient RC is still a long-standing and urgent problem. In contrast to the local manner of many works which aim to optimize one hyper-parameter while keeping others constant, in this work, we propose a global optimization framework using simulated annealing technique to find the optimal architecture of the randomly generated networks for a successful RC. Based on the optimized results, we further study several important properties of some hyper-parameters. Particularly, we find that the globally optimized reservoir network has a largest singular value significantly larger than one, which is contrary to the sufficient condition reported in the literature to guarantee the echo state property. We further reveal the mechanism of this phenomenon with a simplified model and the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems.

27. Integrated Terrestrial and Marine Ecosystem Services Valuation and Result Variation Trends: A Case Study of Jiangsu Province, China

Abstract: Quantitative ecosystem services valuation (ESV) is the key to effective environmental protection and ecosystem restoration. Studies have focused on terrestrial ecosystems and are mainly based on static analyses, excluding marine ecosystem service values and their variability. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated terrestrial and offshore ecosystem service values in Jiangsu Province in 2010 and 2018 using a table of unit area value equivalence factors and a vertically generalized production model (VGPM) to estimate marine primary productivity. The results showed that the terrestrial ESV in Jiangsu Province was 322.740 and 477.798 billion yuan in 2010 and 2018, respectively. The ESV of hydrological regulation in water areas was the highest, whereas that of unutilized land was the lowest. The ESV in different prefectural-level cities exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity and were highly correlated with the proportion, protection, and rational utilization of urban water areas. The offshore ESV in Jiangsu Province was 426.011 and 460.438 billion yuan in 2010 and 2018, respectively; the farther from land, the lower the ecosystem service value. The value of ecological regulation services is the dominant factor in the comprehensive services of terrestrial and offshore ecosystems in Jiangsu Province (accounting for 80% of ESV). From 2010 to 2018, the overall terrestrial and offshore ESV in Jiangsu Province rose by 188.901 billion yuan, increasing by 25.28% from 2010. In future, boundaries of development in production activities should be controlled, the protection and restoration of the ecological environment promoted, and regulatory functions and cultural services of ecosystems rationally exploited.

28. The Influence of Small Clear-Distance Tunnel Construction on Adjacent High-Voltage Transmission Tower Foundation

Abstract: The new tunnel construction will inevitably cause the change of the stress field and displacement field of the stratum where the adjacent existing structures are located, which poses a great threat to the safe and stable operation of the existing structures. Reasonable selection and optimization of construction sequence and construction method of double tunnels with small clear distance are of great significance to the safe and stable operation of existing structures. In this present study, taking the Xiaohan municipal double-arch highway tunnel near the high-voltage transmission tower as the engineering background, the ABQUS finite element numerical simulation method is used to analyze the influence of tunnel construction on the existing high voltage tower foundation. The accuracy of the numerical method is verified compared with the theoretical solution of induced stress at the bottom of the tower foundation caused by the excavation of circular cavity. Then, the influence law of tunnel position on induced stress field is discussed by parameter analysis. On this basis, the construction sequence which has the least influence on the tower foundation is selected by comparing the numerical simulation results of different construction schemes. That is, the left tunnel shall be excavated after the construction of the right tunnel is completed. Finally, the change of the settlement of the existing tower foundation, the stress of the base, and the inclination degree during the CD method excavation is analyzed. The results show that simultaneous excavation of new tunnels has the greatest influence on the settlement and stress increment of the existing tower foundation. It provides suggestions to construct the double tunnels step by step from far side to near side in similar projects.

Abstract: Background: The clinical applications of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) therapy for osteoarthritis (OA) have attracted academic and clinical attention. However, data of the effects of stromal vascular fraction therapy on regeneration of degenerated cartilage are limited in the literature. Meanwhile, there is a great need for a simple and non-invasive evaluation method to analyze the changes of joint cartilage qualitatively and quantitatively in clinical trials. This study entitled “stromal vascular fraction Therapy for Human Knee Osteoarthritis” was registered in ClinicalTrial.gov # NCT05019378.Materials and Methods: We designed and conducted a single center, open labeled clinical phase I/II study, and 6 osteoarthritis patients with both knee cartilage defect I-II were enrolled in this study. The two knees of each patient were randomly assigned to autologous stromal vascular fraction treatment group or non-treatment control group to evaluate the safety and therapeutic effect of stromal vascular fraction therapy for human knee osteoarthritis. We have also established a novel protocol to provide 3D MRI imaging for human knee cartilage enabling us to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate cartilage degeneration and regeneration in this study.Results: The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of 3D Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) imaging of knee cartilage demonstrated that the stromal vascular fraction therapy reduced the cartilage defects; and significant increase of cartilage value both in defect cartilage area and whole cartilage area of treated group and significant increase of thickness and area of both femoral and tibia cartilage in vertical sections of the stromal vascular fraction treated Group at 12 and 24 W post treatment in cartilage defect I-II osteoarthritis patients.Conclusion: This clinical phase I/II study indicated that stromal vascular fraction therapy is a safe clinical procedure and provided evidence that the stromal vascular fraction therapy significantly facilitated cartilage regeneration, opening the opportunity to a phase III trial investigating authentic efficacy of the procedure. This study is the first qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the efficacy of autologous stromal vascular fraction cellular therapy on cartilage regeneration. Through early and definite diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis patients, and providing safe and efficient therapy to facilitate cartilage regeneration, we will be able to control or reverse cartilage degeneration and completely change the epidemiology of osteoarthritis worldwide.

Abstract: Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract: Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract: Abstract Interfacial host–guest complexation offers a versatile way to functionalize nanomaterials. However, the complicated interfacial environment and trace amounts of components present at the interface make the study of interfacial complexation very difficult. Herein, taking the advantages of near-single-molecule level sensitivity and molecular fingerprint of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), we reveal that a cooperative effect between cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and methyl viologen (MV2+2I−) in aggregating Au NPs originates from the cooperative adsorption of halide counter anions I−, MV2+, and CB[7] on Au NPs surface. Moreover, similar SERS peak shifts in the control experiments using CB[n]s but with smaller cavity sizes suggested the occurrence of the same guest complexations among CB[5], CB[6], and CB[7] with MV2+. Hence, an unconventional exclusive complexation model is proposed between CB[7] and MV2+ on the surface of Au NPs, distinct from the well-known 1:1 inclusion complexation model in aqueous solutions. In summary, new insights into the fundamental understanding of host–guest interactions at nanostructured interfaces were obtained by SERS, which might be useful for applications related to host–guest chemistry in engineered nanomaterials.

Abstract: Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

39. EEG-Based Driver Fatigue Monitoring within a Human–Ship–Environment System: Implications for Ship Braking Safety

Abstract: To address the uncontrollable risks associated with the overreliance on ship operators’ driving in current ship safety braking methods, this study aims to reduce the impact of operator fatigue on navigation safety. Firstly, this study established a human–ship–environment monitoring system with functional and technical architecture, emphasizing the investigation of a ship braking model that integrates brain fatigue monitoring using electroencephalography (EEG) to reduce braking safety risks during navigation. Subsequently, the Stroop task experiment was employed to induce fatigue responses in drivers. By utilizing principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce dimensionality across multiple channels of the data acquisition device, this study extracted centroid frequency (CF) and power spectral entropy (PSE) features from channels 7 and 10. Additionally, a correlation analysis was conducted between these features and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), a five-point scale for assessing fatigue severity in the subjects. This study established a model for scoring driver fatigue levels by selecting the three features with the highest correlation and utilizing ridge regression. The human–ship–environment monitoring system and fatigue prediction model proposed in this study, combined with the ship braking model, achieve a safer and more controllable ship braking process. By real-time monitoring and prediction of driver fatigue, appropriate measures can be taken in a timely manner to ensure navigation safety and driver health.

40. Assessing Passengers’ Motion Sickness Levels Based on Cerebral Blood Oxygen Signals and Simulation of Actual Ride Sensation

Abstract: (1) Background: After motion sickness occurs in the ride process, this can easily cause passengers to have a poor mental state, cold sweats, nausea, and even vomiting symptoms. This study proposes to establish an association model between motion sickness level (MSL) and cerebral blood oxygen signals during a ride. (2) Methods: A riding simulation platform and the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology are utilized to monitor the cerebral blood oxygen signals of subjects in a riding simulation experiment. The subjects’ scores on the Fast Motion sickness Scale (FMS) are determined every minute during the experiment as the dependent variable to manifest the change in MSL. The Bayesian ridge regression (BRR) algorithm is applied to construct an assessment model of MSL during riding. The score of the Graybiel scale is adopted to preliminarily verify the effectiveness of the MSL evaluation model. Finally, a real vehicle test is developed, and two driving modes are selected in random road conditions to carry out a control test. (3) Results: The predicted MSL in the comfortable mode is significantly less than the MSL value in the normal mode, which is in line with expectations. (4) Conclusions: Changes in cerebral blood oxygen signals have a huge correlation with MSL. The MSL evaluation model proposed in this study has a guiding significance for the early warning and prevention of motion sickness.

41. Study of Motion Sickness Model Based on fNIRS Multiband Features during Car Rides

Abstract: Motion sickness is a common physiological discomfort phenomenon during car rides. In this paper, the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique was used in real-world vehicle testing. The fNIRS technique was utilized to model the relationship between changes in blood oxygenation levels in the prefrontal cortex of passengers and motion sickness symptoms under different motion conditions. To enhance the accuracy of motion sickness classification, the study utilized principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the most significant features from the test data. Wavelet decomposition was used to extract the power spectrum entropy (PSE) features of five frequency bands highly related to motion sickness. The correlation between motion sickness and cerebral blood oxygen levels was modeled by a 6-point scale calibration for the subjective evaluation of the degree of passenger motion sickness. A support vector machine (SVM) was used to build a motion sickness classification model, achieving an accuracy of 87.3% with the 78 sets of data. However, individual analysis of the 13 subjects showed a varying range of accuracy from 50% to 100%, suggesting the presence of individual differences in the relationship between cerebral blood oxygen levels and motion sickness symptoms. Thus, the results demonstrated that the magnitude of motion sickness during the ride was closely related to the change in the PSE of the five frequency bands of cerebral prefrontal blood oxygen, but further studies are needed to investigate individual variability.

42. Laser Irradiation on Limestone and Cracking: An Experimental Approach

Abstract: Using mechanical drilling to obtain energy resources stored in deep and hard rock layers is becoming increasingly challenging. Therefore, laser irradiation has emerged as a new and promising drilling method. In this study, the effects of immersion conditions on rock-breaking by laser irradiation on the temperature, hole size, rock-breaking efficiency, and macro-fracture after laser irradiation were investigated. Furthermore, the mineral changes and thermogravimetric analysis of rocks were studied. As indicated by the results, the temperature area over 100 °C increases with the increase of irradiation time, and the temperature range of between 2.27 cm2 and 13.20 cm2 varies with the change of laser power at between 90 W and 135 W. The hole-diameter value of the soaked sample was smaller than that of the dried sample. In addition, the hole depth of the soaked sample reduced by 15% at a power of 90 W and 45% at a power of 135 W, compared with that of the dried sample. The value of the modified specific energy of the soaked sample increased, which was particularly noticeable at low power. The soaked sample had a larger effect on the rate of perforation at high power and a smaller effect at low power. The cracks on the surface of the rock samples became larger after being placed for one month. Fracture length increased from 0.61 to 5.09 mm for dried samples and from 2.24 to 8.7 mm for soaked samples at a laser power of 90 W. Fracture length increased from 6.30 to 9.85 mm for dried samples and from 9.04 to 11.38 mm for soaked samples at a laser power of 135 W. The soaked sample began to show differences when heated at 100 °C, which was caused by the evaporation of some free water molecules in the rock. The main weight loss temperatures of the samples occurred in the range of 640 °C to 900 °C.

Abstract: Abstract Background Plant genome engineering mediated by various CRISPR-based tools requires specific protospacer adjacent motifs (PAMs), such as the well-performed NGG, NG, and NNG, to initiate target recognition, which notably restricts the editable range of the plant genome. Results In this study, we thoroughly investigate the nuclease activity and the PAM preference of two structurally engineered SpCas9 variants, SpG and SpRY, in transgenic rice. Our study shows that SpG nuclease favors NGD PAMs, albeit less efficiently than the previously described SpCas9-NG, and that SpRY nuclease achieves efficient editing across a wide range of genomic loci, exhibiting a preference of NGD as well as NAN PAMs. Furthermore, SpRY-fused cytidine deaminase hAID*Δ and adenosine deaminase TadA8e are generated, respectively. These constructs efficiently induce C-to-T and A-to-G conversions in the target genes toward various non-canonical PAMs, including non-G PAMs. Remarkably, high-frequency self-editing events (indels and DNA fragments deletion) in the integrated T-DNA fragments as a result of the nuclease activity of SpRY are observed, whereas the self-editing of SpRY nickase-mediated base editor is quite low in transgenic rice lines. Conclusions The broad PAM compatibility of SpRY greatly expands the targeting scope of CRISPR-based tools in plant genome engineering.

44. Tunable ultra-high quality factor graphene absorber based on semicylindrical silica array and distributed Bragg reflector structure

Abstract: We propose a tunable narrowband absorber by utilizing a graphene monolayer placed between a dielectric semicylindrical array and a multilayer silica/silicon distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) structure. The multi-band perfect absorption can be achieved due to the excitation of multiple resonant modes in the absorber, including the guided mode resonance of the dielectric silica array and BR-based guided mode resonance in the DBR structure. The ultra-high quality factor (Q) is mainly attributed to the low external leakage loss of the resonator and the low intrinsic loss of the graphene monolayer. Moreover, the Q-factor of absorption peaks can be tuned by electrically controlling the Fermi energy of graphene. The sensitivity of a spectral wavelength shift for the refractive index change of the resonator is up to 730 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit is 1043. The proposed graphene-based metamaterial offers potential applications for photodetectors, optical modulators, and sensors in the near infrared frequency regime.

45. Multi-Granularity Analysis of Brain Networks Assembled With Intra-Frequency and Cross-Frequency Phase Coupling for Human EEG After Stroke

Abstract: Evaluating the impact of stroke on the human brain based on electroencephalogram (EEG) remains a challenging problem. Previous studies are mainly analyzed within frequency bands. This article proposes a multi-granularity analysis framework, which uses multiple brain networks assembled with intra-frequency and cross-frequency phase-phase coupling to evaluate the stroke impact in temporal and spatial granularity. Through our experiments on the EEG data of 11 patients with left ischemic stroke and 11 healthy controls during the mental rotation task, we find that the brain information interaction is highly affected after stroke, especially in delta-related cross-frequency bands, such as delta-alpha, delta-low beta, and delta-high beta. Besides, the average phase synchronization index (PSI) of the right hemisphere between patients with stroke and controls has a significant difference, especially in delta-alpha (p = 0.0186 in the left-hand mental rotation task, p = 0.0166 in the right-hand mental rotation task), which shows that the non-lesion hemisphere of patients with stroke is also affected while it cannot be observed in intra-frequency bands. The graph theory analysis of the entire task stage reveals that the brain network of patients with stroke has a longer feature path length and smaller clustering coefficient. Besides, in the graph theory analysis of three sub-stags, the more stable significant difference between the two groups is emerging in the mental rotation sub-stage (500–800 ms). These findings demonstrate that the coupling between different frequency bands brings a new perspective to understanding the brain's cognitive process after stroke.

47. Analysis on the risk factors for multiple transfusion in patients with moderate or severe traumatic brain injury

Abstract: Objective To analyze the risk factors for multiple transfusions in patients with moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods The clinical data of 53 patients undergoing decompressive craniectomy with moderate or severe TBI from January 2018 to June 2019 were analyzed. Coagulation indexes were tested before decompressive craniectomy. The factors associated with multiple transfusions were analyzed by univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analysis. Results Patients were divided into multiple transfusion group (11cases) and control group (42 cases, no transfusion or single transfusion). Thrombin time (P=0.041), international normalized ratio (P=0.048), fibrinogen degradation product (P=0.000) and D⁃dimer (P=0.001) in the multiple transfusion group were higher than those in the control group, while fibrinogen was lower than those in the control group (P=0.006). Logistic regression analysis showed that fibrinogen degradation product was a risk factor for multiple transfusions (OR=1.013, 95%CI:1.005-1.021; P=0.002). Conclusions Elevated fibrinogen degradation product is a risk factor for multiple transfusions in patients with moderate or severe TBI. DOI：10.3969/j.issn.1672⁃6731.2020.07.009

Abstract: Abstract Targeted genome editing technology is becoming one of the most important genetic tools and widely employed in the plant pathology community. In recent years, CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) and CRISPR-associated proteins discovered in the adaptive immune system in prokaryotes have been successfully reprogrammed into various genome editing tools and have caught the attention of the scientific community due to its simplicity, high efficiency, versatility. Here, we provide an overview of various CRISPR/Cas systems, the derived tools and their applications in plant pathology. This review highlights the advantages of knocking-out techniques to target major susceptibility genes and negative regulators of host defense pathways for gaining resistance to bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens in model and crop plants through utilizing the CRISPR/Cas-based tools. Besides, we discuss the possible strategies of employing the CRISPR-based tools for both fundamental studies on plant-pathogen interactions and molecular crop breeding towards the improvement of resistance in the future.
