Objective: Psychopathology, cyberpsychology, and mass media theories link psychological symptoms, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to increased media and technology usage (MTU). Given limited research in this area, we uniquely examined if specific MTU facets were associated with PTSD symptom severity., Method: A sample of 404 socioeconomically diverse adults ( M age = 35.89; 57.4% female) was recruited from Amazon's Mechanical Turk and completed the Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 , Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 , Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9., Results: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that, controlling for depression severity, greater frequency of TV viewing ( p = .004) and media sharing ( p = .040) and greater quantity of online friendships ( p = .006) were associated with greater PTSD symptom severity., Conclusion: Study findings suggest that the extent of MTU behaviors (especially extent of TV use, media sharing, and online friendships) are important to examine in trauma-exposed individuals with PTSD symptoms. Three surfactants (chlorpromazine hydrochloride, thioridazine hydrochloride, and sodium deoxycholate) are found to absorb just as strongly into the protein-containing membranes of erythrocytes as into the phospholipid bilayers of synthetic vesicles. In the concentration region where hemolysis occurs and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm is no longer valid, one may use a phase partition model in which the erythrocyte membrane is one of the phases. The partition coefficients, expressed as the ratio of mole fraction surfactant in the membrane lipid phase to concentration of surfactant in the aqueous phase, have been calculated at the point of saturation in the erythrocyte membrane. These values are Ky = 430 M-1 (chlorpromazine, pH 5.9), 550 M-1 (deoxycholate, pH 7.6), and 640 M-1 (thioridazine, pH 5.9), in isotonic buffer at 27 degrees C. Corresponding values for synthetic vesicles made from dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine are Kx = 230 M-1 (chlorpromazine, 0.12 M buffer/KCl pH 5.9), 440 M-1 (deoxycholate, 0.20 M buffer/NaCl pH 8.0) and 510 M-1 (thioridazine, 0.12 M buffer/KCl pH 5.9), at 27 degrees C. It appears that the surfactants become an integral part of the bilayer in both vesicles and natural membranes and that the absorption is not of a peripheral nature. There is no evidence that the presence of proteins in the natural membrane inhibits the absorption of these surfactants in any way.

We queried 811 cardiopulmonary perfusionists in North America on the equipment and techniques they currently use for cardiopulmonary bypass, their professional training, and their income structure. Most cardiac surgical teams use one of four types of bubble oxygenators; only 5% use a membrane oxygenator exclusively. More than 80% monitor the activated clotting time during cardiopulmonary bypass, and 61% confirm the adequacy of heparinization with this test before initiating bypass. Most perfusionists surveyed, 507, are hospital salaried; 117 are employed by cardiac surgeons; and 72 have established a fee for service arrangement. In 1980, reported incomes for cardiopulmonary perfusionists ranged between $12,000 and $110,000, with a mean of $25,000. Only 196 respondents (24%) were graduates of accredited training programs in perfusion technology, but 618 (76%) were board certified in cardiovascular perfusion. This study presents an in-depth survey of the present status of perfusion technology, a discipline which has grown up around the practice of cardiac surgery.

Lipid suspensions containing from 0.1 to 0.2% by weight dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine were mixed in a flow calorimeter with equal volumes of chlorpromazine hydrochloride at concentrations ranging from 6 X 10(-5) to 1.2 X 10(-4) M. The vesicle bilayer volume fraction of the suspension was determined by density measurements. Linear relationships were obtained between heat production per ml suspension and chlorpromazine concentration at each level of lipid volume. Using phase partitioning as a model, the values of the partition coefficient and the enthalpy change were found to be K'c = 1300 and delta H = -30 kJ X mol-1 at 25 degrees C. Heat outputs at slightly higher concentrations of chlorpromazine increased less than linearly because of repulsive forces between neighboring chlorpromazine cations absorbed in the bilayer phase. At still higher concentrations the slope increased again but partition coefficients became variable, which indicated a change in the nature of the interaction. In batch calorimeter titrations at higher concentrations a sharp increase in heat output was observed at the critical micelle concentration of chlorpromazine (4 mM) and a final leveling off at 6 mM. Enthalpies of dilution of chlorpromazine obtained in separate experiments were large and endothermic, but no break in the curve could be detected at the critical micelle concentration.

Intraaortic balloon pumping is widely utilized for mechanical circulatory support of patients with left ventricular power failure. Although intraaortic balloon pump consoles are quite reliable, malfunctions do occur. If a standby console of similar make is not available, a console of a different manufacturer can be utilized to continue counterpulsation. This article provides guidelines for the emergency driving of a Datascope pump console and an AVCO balloon catheter, and an AVCO pump console and a Datascope balloon catheter. The succesful use of the Datascope pump and an AVCO balloon in 5 patients is reported.
