The notion of scientific visual literacy has been advocated in recent science curriculum reform documents and related learning outcomes are expected from students. However, few studies have been conducted to determine how it is tested in high-stakes examinations. This study utilized the Visualization Blooming Tool to examine the level of visual cognition involved in visual-based physics questions in the Senior High School Entrance Examination (SHSEE) in China. Content analysis was adopted as the research method and 12 sets of the SHSEE physics from four Chinese metropolises (Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou) in 2020, 2021, and 2022 were targeted. The results indicate that although all four metropolises examined the higher-order visual cognitive skills, they placed more emphasis on the levels of apply and analyze but less on evaluate and create. Moreover, the examination items required students to interpret visual representations more often than to construct them, which may be detrimental to developing students' scientific visual literacy. It is suggested that the examination of higher-order visual cognitive skills and encoded visual representation should be strengthened in future high-stakes physics examinations.

A major concern in science education is how to help students form science identity to increase their aspiration for STEM careers. Given the key role of experiences in individual's science identity formation, STEM experiences related to project-based learning (PBL) have received increasing attention in recent years. The purpose of this study was to examine how high school students' science identity has been affected by the multi-dimensional STEM-PBL experiences, i.e., scientific inquiry, technological application, engineering design, and mathematics processing. Employing two independent questionnaires, we quantitatively investigated the correlation between multi-dimensional STEM-PBL experiences and science identity with 400 high school students (grades 7-12) from a range of public schools in China. Results indicated that the level of students' engineering design experiences was the lowest compared to the other three dimensions. Regression analysis revealed that three dimensions of STEM experiences, scientific inquiry, technological application, and mathematics processing, were significant and positive predictors of science identity. Engineering design experiences, however, failed to predict science identity.

Abstract Cervical cancer (CC) is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. NLR Family CARD Domain Containing 5 (NLRC5) plays an important role in tumorigenesis. However, its effect and mechanism in CC remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the function of NLRC5 in CC. NLRC5 was found to be down-regulated in CC tissues compared with normal cervical tissues. However, patients with higher NLRC5 expression had better prognosis, patients with higher age, HPV infection, lymph node metastasis, recurrence and histological grade had worse prognosis. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed NLRC5 to be a potential prognostic indicator for CC. Pearson correlation analysis showed that NLRC5 might exert its function in CC through autophagy related proteins, especially LC3. In vitro experiments demonstrated that NLRC5 inhibited LC3 levels and promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion of CC cells by activating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Treatment with LY294002 reversed the above phenotype. Taken together, our finding suggested that NLRC5 would participate in cervical tumorigenesis and progression by regulating PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. In addition, NLRC5 and LC3 combined as possible predictors in CC.

Abstract Graphene has been extensively utilized as an electrode material for nonaqueous electrochemical capacitors. However, a comprehensive understanding of the charging mechanism and ion arrangement at the graphene/electrolyte interface remain elusive. Herein, a gap-enhanced Raman spectroscopic strategy is designed to characterize the dynamic interfacial process of graphene with an adjustable number of layers, which is based on synergistic enhancement of localized surface plasmons from shell-isolated nanoparticles and a metal substrate. By employing such a strategy combined with complementary characterization techniques, we study the potential-dependent configuration of adsorbed ions and capacitance curves for graphene based on the number of layers. As the number of layers increases, the properties of graphene transform from a metalloid nature to graphite-like behavior. The charging mechanism shifts from co-ion desorption in single-layer graphene to ion exchange domination in few-layer graphene. The increase in area specific capacitance from 64 to 145 µF cm –2 is attributed to the influence on ion packing, thereby impacting the electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the potential-dependent coordination structure of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide in tetraglyme ([Li(G4)][FSI]) at graphene/electrolyte interface is revealed. This work adds to the understanding of graphene interfaces with distinct properties, offering insights for optimization of electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract The innate immune molecule NLR family CARD domain-containing 5 (NLRC5) plays a significant role in endometrial carcinoma (EC) immunosurveillance. However, NLRC5 also plays a protumor role in EC cells. Mismatch repair gene deficiency (dMMR) can enable tumors to grow faster and also can exhibit high sensitivity to immune checkpoint inhibitors. In this study, we attempted to determine whether NLRC5-mediated protumor role in EC is via the regulation of dMMR. Our findings revealed that NLRC5 promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of EC cells and induced the dMMR status of EC in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, the mechanism underlying NLRC5 regulated dMMR was also verified. We first found NLRC5 could suppress nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) pathway in EC cells. Then we validated that the positive effect of NLRC5 in dMMR was restricted when NF-κB was activated by lipopolysaccharides in NLRC5-overexpression EC cell lines. In conclusion, our present study confirmed the novel NLRC5/NF-κB/MMR regulatory mechanism of the protumor effect of NLRC5 on EC cells, thereby suggesting that the NLRC5-mediated protumor in EC was depend on the function of MMR.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. Various factors, including dietary habits, and antacid and antibiotic use, have been shown to influence the esophageal microbiome. Conversely, enrichment and diversity of the esophageal microbiome can also impact its function. Recent studies have revealed prevalent changes in the esophageal microbiome among patients with EC, thus suggesting the potential contribution of the esophageal microbiome to EC development. Additionally, distinct microbiome compositions have been observed in patients with different responses to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, indicating the role of the esophageal microbiome in modulating treatment outcomes. In this review, we have examined previous studies on the esophageal microbiome in healthy individuals and patients with EC or other esophageal diseases, with a focus on identifying microbial communities associated with EC pathogenesis and prognosis. Understanding the role of the microbiome in EC may aid in early detection and optimized treatment strategies, ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients.

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP), also termed Nora lesion, is a rare, benign tumor most often located in the hands and feet. We herein present the second reported case of BPOP affecting the spine, an uncommon location. One year after surgical excision, the patient was pain-free and showed no evidence of recurrence. We reviewed a total of 323 cases of BPOP among 101 articles, providing the first systematic update on the latest knowledge of BPOP. The age of patients with BPOP ranges from 3 months to 87 years, peaking in the second and third decades of life. The hands are the most common location of BPOP (58.39%), followed by the feet (20.81%). Imaging features play a key role in the diagnosis of BPOP, but histopathologic diagnosis remains the gold standard. Differential diagnosis of BPOP should be based on the epidemiologic and clinical features as well as clinical examination findings. Surgical resection is the most extensively used treatment for BPOP. Recurrence is common (37.44%) and can be treated with re-excision. This article can deepen our understanding of BPOP and will be helpful for the diagnosis and treatment of BPOP in clinical practice.

For mutual coupling evaluation between antennas on the platform, present an enhanced algorithm that combines the spherical wave expansion (SWE), the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD), and the reaction theorem to accurately calculate the mutual coupling between two antennas mounted on a platform. The algorithm begins by employing SWE to compute the direct electromagnetic field radiated by the antennas. Subsequently, UTD is introduced to capture the field scattered by the platform. Finally, the mutual coupling is evaluated through the reaction integral. Numerical examples highlight the algorithm's promising speed and accuracy, surpassing the performance of the MLFMA and MoM-UTD methods. With a computational complexity of O(LMN3), our approach offers significant improvements for mutual coupling analysis in platform-based antenna systems.

Introduction: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small and non-coding RNA molecules which have multiple important regulatory roles within cells. With the deepening research on miRNAs, more and more researches show that the abnormal expression of miRNAs is closely related to various diseases. The relationship between miRNAs and diseases is crucial for discovering the pathogenesis of diseases and exploring new treatment methods.Methods: Therefore, we propose a new sparse autoencoder and MLP method (SPALP) to predict the association between miRNAs and diseases. In this study, we adopt advanced deep learning technologies, including sparse autoencoder and multi-layer perceptron (MLP), to improve the accuracy of predicting miRNA-disease associations. Firstly, the SPALP model uses a sparse autoencoder to perform feature learning and extract the initial features of miRNAs and diseases separately, obtaining the latent features of miRNAs and diseases. Then, the latent features combine miRNAs functional similarity data with diseases semantic similarity data to construct comprehensive miRNAs-diseases datasets. Subsequently, the MLP model can predict the unknown association among miRNAs and diseases.Result: To verify the performance of our model, we set up several comparative experiments. The experimental results show that, compared with traditional methods and other deep learning prediction methods, our method has significantly improved the accuracy of predicting miRNAs-disease associations, with 94.61% accuracy and 0.9859 AUC value. Finally, we conducted case study of SPALP model. We predicted the top 30 miRNAs that might be related to Lupus Erythematosus, Ecute Myeloid Leukemia, Cardiovascular, Stroke, Diabetes Mellitus five elderly diseases and validated that 27, 29, 29, 30, and 30 of the top 30 are indeed associated.Discussion: The SPALP approach introduced in this study is adept at forecasting the links between miRNAs and diseases, addressing the complexities of analyzing extensive bioinformatics datasets and enriching the comprehension contribution to disease progression of miRNAs.

This study examines the flow behavior and deformation mechanism of a FGH4113A superalloy with high γ′ content for different strain rates (0.01–1 s−1) at sub-solvus (1030, 1080 °C), near-solvus (1130 °C), and sup-solvus temperatures (1180 °C). The results indicated that the alloy exhibits four different flow behaviors: rapid softening after reaching peak stress (at 1030–1080 °C), slow softening after reaching peak stress (at 1130–1180 °C/0.1–1 s−1), steady state flow (at 1130 °C/0.01 s−1), and continuous hardening (at 1180 °C/0.01 s−1). The strain rate sensitivity exponent decreases as the flow behavior transforms from dynamic softening to continuous hardening. Moreover, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) fraction decreases with increasing strain rate at sub-solvus temperatures, where an inverse trend was observed at near- or sup-solvus temperatures. These observations are influenced by the interplay of continuous original grain boundary migration (COBM), DRX, and grain growth. Meanwhile, the primary γ′ phase has different roles under distinct deformation conditions. At sub-solvus temperature, the primary γ′ phase facilitates DRX, grain refinement, and coordinated plastic deformation. At near-solve temperature, the primary γ′ phase predominantly contributes to coordinated plastic deformation. At the sup-solvus temperature, the γ′ phase entirely dissolves, with the grains coarsened by COBM continuously undergoing compressed, exhibiting continuous hardening.

Abstract Background The prognostic performance of soluble CD40L (sCD40L) for illness severity in infectious diseases is rarely reported. We investigated the ability of sCD40L combined with Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score to evaluate mortality in septic patients in the emergency department(ED). Methods We enrolled 222 septic patients in the ED of Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital from October 2020 to April 2021. Their serum sCD40L, PCT, lactate (Lac), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score were used to predict the prognosis of septic patients in terms of 28-day mortality. Serum sCD40L was detected by Human XL Cytokine Luminex. Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the prognostic value of the variables. Results One hundred ninety-five patients met the inclusion criteria, divided into survival group (55 cases) and non-survival group (140 cases). sCD40L, PCT, Lac, SOFA and APACHE II score were found to independently predict 28-day mortality (P

The application of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to TA4 pure titanium (Ti) results in a fine-grained microstructure. This technique presents an substitute for alloying, delivering enhanced mechanical properties without reducing biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. This study employs scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to explore the microstructure evolution and the toughening mechanism of TA4 pure Ti after deformation. ECAP performed at 573 K endows TA4 pure Ti with a uniformly fine-grained microstructure, leading to a significant enhancement in its mechanical properties, exemplified by a yield strength of ∼731.9 ± 2.7 MPa and an elongation of ∼30.8± 1.3 %. While the {0001} basal slip primarily governs the ECAP deformation, the non-basal slip plays an increasingly important role with the increase of passes. The increase of yield strength can be attributed to grain refinement and the modification of the {0001} basal texture. Meanwhile, the improvement of plasticity is related to the strengthening of the {101‾ 0} prismatic texture. These findings offer fresh insights and methodologies for the design and manufacture of high-performance biomedical pure Ti.

Abstract Backgroud Multiple studies have identified pathogenic germline variants in cancer susceptibility genes (CSGs) in Chinese lung cancer patients; however, accurate assessment of these variants' contributions to cancer predisposition is always hampered by the absence of data on the prevalence of these variants in the general population. It is necessary to conduct a large‐scale case–control study to identify CSGs that significantly increase the risk of lung cancer. Materials and methods We performed targeted sequencing of a CSGs panel in 1117 lung cancer patients and 16,327 controls from the general Chinese population. Results In comparison to controls, lung cancer patients had a considerably higher prevalence of pathogenic and likely pathogenic (P/LP) variations. Among lung cancer patients, 72% of P/LP variants carriers did not have a family cancer history, who would be ignored if germline testing was only provided for patients meeting family history‐based criteria. Furthermore, compared to individuals with late‐onset lung cancer, patients with early‐onset lung cancer had a considerably higher prevalence of P/LP variations. With odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 4‐fold (BRCA1: OR, 4.193; 95%CI, 1.382–10.768) to 29‐fold (TP53: OR, 29.281; 95%CI, 1.523–1705.506), P/LP variants in the BRCA1 and TP53 genes were discovered to be strongly related to increased lung cancer risk. Additionally, with ORs ranging from 7.322‐fold to infinity, we discovered 23 variations previously categorized as non‐P/LP variants were highly enriched in lung cancer patients. Conclusion Our findings indicated that P/LP variants in BRCA1 and TP53 conferred increased risk of lung cancer in Chinese.

Production prediction is crucial for the recovery of hydrocarbon resources. However, accurate and rapid production forecasting remains challenging for unconventional reservoirs due to the complexity of the percolation process and the scarcity of available data. To address this problem, a novel model combining a long short-term memory network (LSTM) and support vector regression (SVR) was proposed to forecast tight oil production. Three variables, the tubing head pressure, nozzle size, and water rate were utilized as the inputs of the presented machine-learning workflow to account for the influence of operational parameters. The time-series response of tight oil production was the output and was predicted by the optimized LSTM model. An SVR-based residual correction model was constructed and embedded with LSTM to increase the prediction accuracy. Case studies were carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method using data from two wells in the Ma-18 block of the Xinjiang oilfield. Decline curve analysis (DCA) methods, LSTM and artificial neural network (ANN) models were also applied in this study and compared with the LSTM-SVR model to prove its superiority. It was demonstrated that introducing residual correction with the newly proposed LSTM-SVR model can effectively improve prediction performance. The LSTM-SVR model of Well A produced the lowest prediction root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.42, while the RMSE of Arps, PLE Duong, ANN, and LSTM were 5.84, 6.65, 5.85, 8.16, and 7.70, respectively. The RMSE of Well B of LSTM-SVR model is 0.94, while the RMSE of ANN, and LSTM were 1.48, and 2.32.

Abstract Asthma is a polygenic disease that may onset during childhood. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the main therapy in asthma, although their efficacy varies among individuals. Nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) is an important target of ICS treatment of asthma. Recent research has reported that GRB2 associated binding protein 1 (GAB1) gene may participate in the pathogenesis of asthma by regulating the NF-κB pathway. Therefore, we used the technique of an improved multiplex ligation detection reaction to sequence GAB1 gene and investigated the involvement of Single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) in GAB1 gene in asthma and ICS efficacy in asthmatic children. We found no differences between asthma cases and controls in allele or genotype frequencies of GAB1. Haplotype analysis showed an increased tendency for AGGAGC frequency in asthma patients compared with controls (OR = 2.69, p = 0.018). The percentage of EOS and genotype distribution of rs1397527 were associated (p = 0.007). The EOS percentage was higher in GT genotype when compared to the GG genotype (5.50 vs 3.00, Bonferroni adjusted p = 0.005). After 12-weeks ICS treatment, GAB1 rs1397527 TT and GT genotype carriers had a smaller change in forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) than GG carriers (p = 0.009), and rs3805236 GG and AG genotype carriers also had a smaller change in FEV1/FVC than AA carriers (p = 0.025). For ICS response, the frequency of GG genotype of rs1397527 was significantly higher in good responders (p = 0.038). The generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) analysis showed a best significant four-order model (rs1397527, allergen exposure, environmental tobacco smoke exposure, and pet exposure) involving gene-environment interactions (p = 0.001). In summary, we found that GAB1 SNVs were not associated with asthma susceptibility. Haplotype AGGAGC was a risk factor for asthma. GAB1 variants were associated with eosinophils and ICS response in asthmatics. Furthermore, gene-environment interaction was observed.

Abstract Background Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a pool of short DNA fragments mainly released from apoptotic hematopoietic cells. Nevertheless, the precise physiological process governing the DNA fragmentation and molecular profile of cfDNA remains obscure. To dissect the DNA fragmentation process, we use a human leukemia cell line HL60 undergoing apoptosis to analyze the size distribution of DNA fragments by shallow whole-genome sequencing (sWGS). Meanwhile, we also scrutinize the size profile of plasma cfDNA in 901 healthy human subjects and 38 dogs, as well as 438 patients with six common cancer types by sWGS. Results Distinct size distribution profiles were observed in the HL60 cell pellet and supernatant, suggesting fragmentation is a stepwise process. Meanwhile, C-end preference was seen in both intracellular and extracellular cfDNA fragments. Moreover, the cfDNA profiles are characteristic and conserved across mammals. Compared with healthy subjects, distinct cfDNA profiles with a higher proportion of short fragments and lower C-end preference were found in cancer patients. Conclusions Our study provides new insight into fragmentomics of circulating cfDNA processing, which will be useful for early diagnosis of cancer and surveillance during cancer progression.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a prevalent hemorrhagic cerebrovascular emergency. Alleviating neurological damage in the early stages of ICH is critical for enhancing patient prognosis and survival rate. A novel form of cell death called ferroptosis is intimately linked to hemorrhage-induced brain tissue injury. Although studies have demonstrated the significant preventive impact of bovine serum albumin-stabilized selenium nanoparticles (BSA-SeNPs) against disorders connected to the neurological system, the neuroprotective effect on the hemorrhage stroke and the mechanism remain unknown. Therefore, based on the favorable biocompatibility of BSA-SeNPs, h-ICH (hippocampus-intracerebral hemorrhage) model was constructed to perform BSA-SeNPs therapy. As expected, these BSA-SeNPs could effectively improve the cognitive deficits and ameliorate the damage of hippocampal neuron. Furthermore, BSA-SeNPs reverse the morphology of mitochondria and enhanced the mitochondrial function, evidenced by mitochondrial respiration function (OCR) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Mechanistically, BSA-SeNPs could efficiently activate the Nrf2 to enhance the expression of antioxidant GPX4 at mRNA and protein levels, and further inhibit lipid peroxidation production in erastin-induced ferroptotic damages. Taken together, this study not only sheds light on the clinical application of BSA-SeNPs, but also provides its newly theoretical support for the strategy of the intervention and treatment of neurological impairment following ICH.

Abstract Quasi‐solid‐state electrolytes (QSSEs) based on ionic liquids are recognized as one of the frontrunners of electrolytes for ensuring the safety and high energy density of next‐generation lithium batteries. However, the incapacity of such systems to meet the performance demands of batteries is significantly subject to the properties of the electrolyte and the intricacies of related interfacial processes. Recently, we have designed a high‐performing pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Py14TFSI) based QSSE (Py‐Gel), with introducing LiBF4 and LiCl, which served as a system for probing the dynamic Li deposition mechanism. Herein, we focus on understanding the mechanisms of Py‐Gel formation and examining the chemistry and structure as well as the properties of the solid‐electrolyte interphases (SEIs) formed in the Py‐Gel and their influences on Li deposition. Spectroscopic characterizations suggest the existence of a cross‐linked structure in Py‐Gel, for which multiple intermolecular/intramolecular hydrogen bondings and ionic coulumbic interactions among Py cations, TFSI− anions, and Li salts are responsible. The Py‐Gel electrolyte exhibits exceptional electrical properties at room temperature. Different SEIs are prepared in the Py‐Gel via electrochemical protocols to elucidate that the synergy between a well‐featured electrolyte and an outstanding SEI is vital for stable cycling of Li metal anodes in such a QSSE.

Despite the development of HER2-targeted drugs, achieving favorable outcomes for patients with HR+/HER2+MBC remains challenging. This study utilized Bayesian Network Meta-analysis to compare the efficacy and safety of anti-HER2 combination regimens. The primary analysis focused on progression-free survival (PFS), while secondary analyses included objective response rate, overall survival (OS) and the incidence rate of grade 3/4 adverse events (AEs). A comprehensive search across seven databases identified 25 randomized controlled trials for inclusion in this meta-analysis. For patients eligible for endocrinotherapy, our findings revealed that dual-target combined endocrine therapy, such as Her2-mAb+Her2-mAb+Endo (HR = 0.38; 95%CrI: 0.16–0.88) and Her2-mAb+Her2-tki+Endo (HR = 0.45; 95%CrI: 0.23–0.89), significantly improved PFS compared to endocrine therapy alone. According to the surface under the cumulative ranking curves (SUCRAs), Her2-mAb+Her2-mAb+Endo and Her2-mAb+Her2-tki+Endo ranked highest in terms of PFS and OS, respectively. For patients unsuitable for endocrine therapy, anti-HER2 dual-target combined chemotherapy, such as Her2-mAb+Her2-mAb+Chem (HR = 0.76; 95%CrI: 0.6–0.96) and Her2-mAb+Her2-tki+Chem (HR = 0.48; 95%CrI: 0.29–0.81), demonstrated significant improvements in PFS compared to Her2-mAb+Chem. The results were the same when compared with Her2-tki+Chem. According to the SUCRAs, Her2-mAb+Her2-tki+Chem and Her2-mAb+Her2-mAb+Chem ranked highest for PFS and OS, respectively. Subgroup analyses consistently supported these overall findings, indicating that dual-target therapy was the optimal approach irrespective of treatment line.

ObjectivesUnder the condition of considering the influence of the sea surface, the relationships between the induced current of a whip antenna on a large ship under the incidence of high-altitude nuclear electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) and the incident angle of the pulse and antenna position are studied.Methods The half-space finite different time domain (FDTD) method is used to consider the influence of the sea surface; the thin wire algorithm is used to solve the problems of huge computational grid and low efficiency caused by the fine structure; the lumped element FDTD method is used to consider the influence of the load behind the antenna on the induced current; and a parallel algorithm based on MPI is used to speed up the calculation.ResultsThe results show that the induced current on the whip antenna of an aircraft carrier model is related to the antenna position and incident angle in the HEMP incident case. The peak value of the induced current at the antenna port is 5.6 A in typical cases.ConclusionsThe analysis shows that the magnitude of the induced current at the antenna port mainly depends on the antenna position and has little relationship with the incident angle of the pulse. The research provides an algorithm basis for the calculation and analysis of induced current in the case of the incident pulse electromagnetic wave of large ships, and the research results provide a theoretical support for the analysis of ship electromagnetic compatibility problems.

Objective When calculating the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of curved targets using the shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) method, there is a large error in the calculation of the wavefront of the ray tube and ray tracing if the surface is discretized using a planar mesh, resulting in the low confidence level of the simulation results. As such, a modified algorithm is required. Methods In the modified method, the surface fitting technique is used to reshape the curvature information of the triangular meshed model, then the wavefront curvature of the ray tube is calculated on the basis of differential geometry, and the divergence factor (DF) is introduced to correct the amplitude of the ray tube. In addition, a new ray-tracing method is designed for the divergent ray tubes to realize oversampling on the target surface. ResultsThe numerical results show that the algorithm in this paper effectively improves the sampling accuracy of the ray tube and the accuracy of the simulation of the curved surface target. ConclusionThe DF correction is important for improving the accuracy of the SBR method in calculating the scattering characteristics of curved targets.

As homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) is a biomarker to predict the efficiency of PARP inhibitor treatment, this study developed a non‐exonic single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)‐based targeted next‐generation sequencing panel and comprehensively examined it both on standard and clinical ovarian cancer tissues. The HRD scores calculated by the panel and whole‐genome sequencing were consistent, with the analysis by sequenza being the most reliable. The results on clinical samples revealed that the panel performed better in HRD analysis compared with the SNP microarray. There are several distinctions between this newly developed kit and reported HRD detection panels. First, the panel covers only 52 592 SNPs, which makes it capable of detecting genomic instability. Secondly, all the SNPs are non‐exonic; as a result, the panel can be used cooperatively with any exon panel. Thirdly, all the SNPs selected have a high minor allele frequency in Chinese people, making it a better choice for HRD detection in Chinese patients. In summary, this panel shows promise as a clinical application to guide PARP inhibitors or platinum drugs used in the treatment of ovarian and other cancers.

Flooding and drought are the two most devastating natural hazards limiting maize production. Exogenous glycinebetaine (GB), an osmotic adjustment agent, has been extensively used but there is limited research on its role in mitigating the negative effects of different abiotic stresses. This study aims to identify the different roles of GB in regulating the diverse defense regulation of maize against drought and flooding. Hybrids of Yindieyu 9 and Heyu 397 grown in pots in a ventilated greenhouse were subjected to flooding (2–3 cm standing layer) and drought (40–45% field capacity) at the three-leaf stage for 8 d. The effects of different concentrations of foliar GB (0, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mM) on the physiochemical attributes and growth of maize were tested. Greater drought than flooding tolerance in both varieties to combat oxidative stress was associated with higher antioxidant activities and proline content. While flooding decreased superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase (POD) activities and proline content compared to normal water, they all declined with stress duration, leading to a larger reactive oxygen species compared to drought. It was POD under drought stress and ascorbate peroxidase under flooding stress that played crucial roles in tolerating water stress. Foliar GB further enhanced antioxidant ability and contributed more effects to POD to eliminate more hydrogen peroxide than the superoxide anion, promoting growth, especially for leaves under water stress. Furthermore, exogenous GB made a greater increment in Heyu 397 than Yindieyu 9, as well as flooding compared to drought. Overall, a GB concentration of 5.0 mM, with a non-toxic effect on well-watered maize, was determined to be optimal for the effective mitigation of water-stress damage to the physiochemical characteristics and growth of maize.

Thrombotic disease has been listed as the third most fatal vascular disease in the world. After decades of development, clinical thrombolytic drugs still cannot avoid the occurrence of adverse reactions such as bleeding. A number of studies have shown that the application of various nano-functional materials in thrombus-targeted drug delivery, combined with external stimuli, such as magnetic, near-infrared light, ultrasound, etc., enrich the drugs in the thrombus site and use the properties of nano-functional materials for collaborative thrombolysis, which can effectively reduce adverse reactions such as bleeding and improve thrombolysis efficiency. In this paper, the research progress of organic nanomaterials, inorganic nanomaterials, and biomimetic nanomaterials for drug delivery is briefly reviewed.

Abstract The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays crucial roles for the reversible operation of lithium metal batteries. However, fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of SEI formation and evolution is still limited. Herein, we develop a depth-sensitive plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (DS-PERS) method to enable in-situ and nondestructive characterization of the nanostructure and chemistry of SEI, based on synergistic enhancements of localized surface plasmons from nanostructured Cu, shell-isolated Au nanoparticles and Li deposits at different depths. We monitor the sequential formation of SEI in both ether-based and carbonate-based dual-salt electrolytes on a Cu current collector and then on freshly deposited Li, with dramatic chemical reconstruction. The molecular-level insights from the DS-PERS study unravel the profound influences of Li in modifying SEI formation and in turn the roles of SEI in regulating the Li-ion desolvation and the subsequent Li deposition at SEI-coupled interfaces. Last, we develop a cycling protocol that promotes a favorable direct SEI formation route, which significantly enhances the performance of anode-free Li metal batteries.

Abstract Textile defect recognition is a significant technique in the production processes of the textile industry. However, in the practical processes, it is hard to acquire large amounts of textile defect samples. Meanwhile, the textile samples with correct defect labels are rare. To address these two limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised graph convolutional network for few labeled textile defect recognition. First, we construct the graph convolutional network and convolution neural network to extract spectral features and spatial features. Second, the adaptive convolution structure is proposed to generate adaptive kernels according to their dynamically learned features. Finally, the spatial–spectral adaptive unified learning network (SSA-ULNet) is built for limited labeled defective samples, and graph-based semi-supervised learning is constructed. The textile defect recognition model can extract the textile image features through the image descriptors, enabling the whole network to be end-to-end trainable. To evaluate the proposed method, one public dataset and two unique self-built textile defect datasets are used to textile defect recognition. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed SSA-ULNet obviously outperforms existing state-of-the-art deep learning methods.

The notion of scientific visual literacy has been advocated in recent science curriculum reform documents and related learning outcomes are expected from students. However, few studies have been conducted to determine how it is tested in high-stakes examinations. This study utilized the Visualization Blooming Tool to examine the level of visual cognition involved in visual-based physics questions in the Senior High School Entrance Examination (SHSEE) in China. Content analysis was adopted as the research method and 12 sets of the SHSEE physics from four Chinese metropolises (Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou) in 2020, 2021, and 2022 were targeted. The results indicate that although all four metropolises examined the higher-order visual cognitive skills, they placed more emphasis on the levels of apply and analyze but less on evaluate and create. Moreover, the examination items required students to interpret visual representations more often than to construct them, which may be detrimental to developing students’ scientific visual literacy. It is suggested that the examination of higher-order visual cognitive skills and encoded visual representation should be strengthened in future high-stakes physics examinations.

Abstract Background Although mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been effective in tendinopathy, the mechanisms by which MSCs promote tendon healing have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that MSCs transfer mitochondria to injured tenocytes in vitro and in vivo to protect against Achilles tendinopathy (AT). Methods Bone marrow MSCs and H2O2-injured tenocytes were co-cultured, and mitochondrial transfer was visualized by MitoTracker dye staining. Mitochondrial function, including mitochondrial membrane potential, oxygen consumption rate, and adenosine triphosphate content, was quantified in sorted tenocytes. Tenocyte proliferation, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation were analyzed. Furthermore, a collagenase type I-induced rat AT model was used to detect mitochondrial transfer in tissues and evaluate Achilles tendon healing. Results MSCs successfully donated healthy mitochondria to in vitro and in vivo damaged tenocytes. Interestingly, mitochondrial transfer was almost completely blocked by co-treatment with cytochalasin B. Transfer of MSC-derived mitochondria decreased apoptosis, promoted proliferation, and restored mitochondrial function in H2O2-induced tenocytes. A decrease in reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels (interleukin-6 and -1β) was observed. In vivo, mitochondrial transfer from MSCs improved the expression of tendon-specific markers (scleraxis, tenascin C, and tenomodulin) and decreased the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the tendon. In addition, the fibers of the tendon tissue were neatly arranged and the structure of the tendon was remodeled. Inhibition of mitochondrial transfer by cytochalasin B abrogated the therapeutic efficacy of MSCs in tenocytes and tendon tissues. Conclusions MSCs rescued distressed tenocytes from apoptosis by transferring mitochondria. This provides evidence that mitochondrial transfer is one mechanism by which MSCs exert their therapeutic effects on damaged tenocytes.

Abstract Background N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation is the most abundant chemical posttranscriptional modification of mRNA, and it is associated with the regulation of the immune response to tumors. However, the function of m6A modification in the immune response to endometrial cancer (EC) remains unknown. Our study investigated the immunological role of methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) in EC and the underlying molecular mechanism. Methods We investigated the correlation between the expression of METTL3 and CD8 by using an endometrial tissue microarray cohort. Next, we investigated the role and mechanism of METTL3 in the immune response to EC using a mouse tumor model and a CD8+ T cell-EC cell coculture system after METTL3 overexpression or depletion. Additionally, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), methylated RIP, and RNA stability experiments were used to investigate the mechanism underlying the function of METTL3 in immunosurveillance of EC. Results METTL3 levels were downregulated in EC patients, low levels of METTL3 were correlated with poor prognosis in EC patients. There was a positive correlation between METTL3 expression and CD8 expression. Overexpression of METTL3 in the EC cell and CD8+ T cell coculture system inhibited EC cell proliferation, migration, and promoted CD8+ T-cell proliferation, and in vivo, METTL3 overexpression increased CD8+ T cell proportions and inhibited EC progression; however, genetic depletion of METTL3 exerted the opposite effects. NLR family CARD domain-containing 5 (NLRC5) was identified as a target of METTL3-mediated m6A modification. The degradation of NLRC5 was increased by YTH domain-containing family 2 (YTHDF2). Conclusions Overall, METTL3, YTHDF2, and NLRC5 have potential to be the diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for EC. METTL3 facilitated the m6A modifications of NLRC5 and inhibited its degradation through a YTHDF2-dependent mechanism in EC. Genetic overexpression of METTL3 attenuated the immune evasion of EC by promoting NLRC5-mediated immunosurveillance, suggesting that the METTL3/YTHDF2/NLRC5 axis is a promising target of immunotherapy in EC.

Abstract Background Patients with work-related lung disease (WRLD) are at increased risk of death caused by severe lung tissue damage and fibrosis. This study aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of lung transplantation (LTx) for WRLD and compare the results of LTx between WRLD and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study reviewed the clinical data of patients who underwent LTx for WRLD or IPF at our hospital between January 2015 and December 2021. Cumulative survival rates after LTx were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results The final analysis included 33 cases of WRLD and 91 cases of IPF. The 33 WRLD patients consisted of 19 (57.6%) cases of silicosis, 8 (24.2%) cases of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, 3 (9.09%) cases of asbestosis, and 3 (9.09%) cases of other WRLD.
