Objective: Endovascular therapy (EVT) is the most successful treatment for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessel occlusion (LVO) in the anterior circulation. However, futile recanalization (FR) seriously affects the prognosis of these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors of FR after EVT in patients with AIS. Method: Patients diagnosed with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO and receiving EVT between June 2020 and October 2022 were prospectively enrolled. FR after EVT was defined as a poor 90-day prognosis (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score ≥ 3) despite achieving successful reperfusion (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction [mTICI] classification of 2b-3). All included patients were categorized into control group (mRS score < 3) and FR group (mRS score ≥ 3). Demographic characteristics, comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, smoking, etc.), stroke-specific data (NIHSS score, ASPECT score and site of occlusion), procedure data (treatment type [direct thrombectomy vs. bridging thrombectomy], degree of vascular recanalization [mTICI], procedure duration time and onset-recanalization time), laboratory indicators (lymphocytes count, neutrophils count, monocytes count, C-reactive protein, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [NLR], monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio [MHR], lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio [LMR], lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio [LCR], lymphocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio[LHR], total cholesterol and triglycerides.) were compared between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to explore independent predictors of FR after EVT. Results: A total of 196 patients were included in this study, among which 57 patients were included in the control group and 139 patients were included in the FR group. Age, proportion of patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus, median NIHSS score, CRP level, procedure duration time, neutrophil count and NLR were higher in the FR group than in the control group. Lymphocyte count, LMR, and LCR were lower in the FR group than in the control group. There were no significant differences in platelet count, monocytes count, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, gender, smoking, atrial fibrillation, percentage of occluded sites, onset-recanalization time, ASPECT score and type of treatment between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that NLR was independently associated with FR after EVT (OR = 1.37, 95%CI = 1.005–1.86, P = 0.046). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that high NLR was associated with a risk of FR in patients with AIS due to anterior circulation LVO. These findings may help clinicians determine which patients with AIS are at higher risk of FR after EVT. Our study can provide a theoretical basis for interventions in the aforementioned population. By virtue of its high calculational accuracy and efficiency, the stochastic Galerkin method (SGM) has been successfully applied many times in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) simulation in recent years. This paper proposes a calculating example taking geometric uncertainty factors into consideration. As is proved in the paper, there is a relatively large error when using the SGM to solve the example mentioned above. According to failure mechanism, the fundamental reason of the failure of the simulation lies in the additional error caused by using numerical integration to solve the inner product formula. Meanwhile, it is proved that no additional errors are introduced when using the stochastic collocation method (SCM), so the SCM is better than the SGM in stability. This paper describes the design of an acoustic metamaterial fluid-filled pipe with periodically variable materials. The aim of this design is to improve the broadband vibration attenuation frequency range of fluid-filled pipes by combining the mechanism of local resonance (LR) and Bragg scattering bandgaps (BGs). The vibration bandgap (BG) of the pipe is investigated using the transfer matrix method. It is demonstrated that the coupling of LR and Bragg scattering BGs produces a remarkable improvement in effective bandwidth. Additionally, the external shock excitation effect on pipe vibration is calculated using the finite element method. This indicates that the strongest interaction between the LR and Bragg BG is achieved when the LR is located in the center of the softer material. However, this strong coupling effect may cause some degeneration in the Bragg BG. Moreover, in practical applications, the position of the LR BG should be determined according to the vibration BG requirements. Experimental samples are prepared, and an experimental test and verification procedure is conducted. The positions and widths of the BG and the shock vibration properties measured during the experiment agree well with the theoretical results. This research provides a technical and theoretical basis for the attenuation design of vibration reduction systems for fluid-filled pipes that may be subjected to explosive loads. It has been assumed that patients with strict immunosuppressive treatment after solid organ transplantation have only marginal risk in developing autoimmune encephalitis. We reported a woman in her late 40 s who presented with generalized convulsions and loss of consciousness. After detailed history review, neuropsychological tests, metagenomic next-generation sequencing of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain, and electroencephalogram, she was diagnosed as anti-CASPR2 encephalitis based on the positive anti-CASPR2 auto-antibody in serum and CSF. The patient underwent liver transplantation and has taken lenvatinib for 2 months, in addition to tacrolimus, mycophenotale mofetil, and entecavir administered for half a year. This case was the first report of anti-CASPR2 encephalitis in post–organ transplantation patients. Together with the reports of other encephalitis cases in organ transplantation, it warns the possibility of developing immune-oriented encephalitis in patients undergoing immunosuppression, especially in combination with other treatments of immunomodulatory activity. Objective: This study was to evaluate the effect of husbandry systems and strains on cecum microbial diversity of Jingyang chickens under the same dietary conditions. Methods: A total of 320 laying hens (body weight, 1.70±0.15 kg; 47 weeks old) were randomly allocated to one of the four treatments: i) Silver-feathered hens in enrichment cages (SEC) with an individual cage (70×60×75 cm), ii) Silver-feathered hens in free range (SFR) with the stocking density of 1.5 chickens per ten square meters, iii) Gold-feathered hens in enrichment cages (GEC), iv) Gold-feathered hens in free range (GFR). The experiment lasted 8 weeks and the cecum fecal samples were collected for 16S rDNA high throughput sequencing at the end of experiment. Results: i) The core microbiota was composed of Bacteroidetes (49% to 60%), Firmicutes (21% to 32%) and Proteobacteria (2% to 4%) at the phylum level. ii) The core bacteria were Bacteroides (26% to 31%), Rikenellaceae (9% to 16%), Parabacteroides (2% to 5%) and Lachnoclostridium (2% to 6%) at the genus level. iii) The indexes of operational taxonomic unit, Shannon, Simpson and observed species were all higher in SFR group than in SEC group while in GEC group than in GFR group, with SFR group showing the greatest diversity of cecum microorganisms among the four groups. iv) The clustering result was consistent with the strain classification, with a similar composition of cecum bacteria in the two strains of laying hens. Conclusion: The core microbiota were not altered by husbandry systems or strains. The free-range system increased the diversity of cecal microbes only for silver feathered hens. Biodegradation of alkanes by microbial communities is ubiquitous in nature. Interestingly, the microbial communities with high hydrocarbon-degrading performances are sometimes composed of not only hydrocarbon degraders but also non-consumers, but the synergistic mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we found that two bacterial strains isolated from Chinese oilfields, Dietzia sp. DQ12-45-1b and Pseudomonas stutzeri SLG510A3-8, had a synergistic effect on hexadecane (C16) biodegradation, even though P. stutzeri could not utilize C16 individually. To gain a better understanding of the roles of the alkane non-consumer P. stutzeri in the C16-degrading consortium, we reconstructed a two-species stoichiometric metabolic model iBH1908, and integrated in silico prediction with the following in vitro validation, a comparative proteomics analysis, and extracellular metabolomic detections. Metabolic interactions between P. stutzeri and Dietzia sp. were successfully revealed for the importance in efficient C16 degradation. In the process, P. stutzeri survived on C16 metabolic intermediates from Dietzia sp., including hexadecanoate, 3-hydroxybutanoate, and á-ketoglutarate. In return, P. stutzeri reorganized its metabolic flux distribution to fed back acetate and glutamate to Dietzia sp. to enhance its C16 degradation efficiency by improving Dietzia cell accumulation and by regulating the expression of Dietzia succinate dehydrogenase. By using the synergistic microbial consortium of Dietzia sp. and P. stutzeri with the addition of the in silico predicted key exchanged metabolites, diesel oil was effectively disposed in 15 days with the removal fraction of 85.54±6.42%, leaving low amounts of C15-C20 isomers. Background: The fruit of litchi (Litchi chinensis) comprises a white translucent edible aril surrounded by a pericarp. The pericarp of litchi has been the focus of studies associated with fruit size, coloration, cracking and shelf life. However, research at the molecular level has been limited by the lack of genomic and transcriptomic information. In this study, an analysis of the transcriptome of litchi pericarp was performed to obtain information regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying the physiological changes in the pericarp, including those leading to fruit surface coloration. Results: Coincident with the rapid break down of chlorophyll, but substantial increase of anthocyanins in litchi pericarp as fruit developed, two major physiological changes, degreening and pigmentation were visually apparent. In this study, a cDNA library of litchi pericarp with three different coloration stages was constructed. A total of 4.7 Gb of raw RNA-Seq data was generated and this was then de novo assembled into 51,089 unigenes with a mean length of 737 bp. Approximately 70% of the unigenes (34,705) could be annotated based on public protein databases and, of these, 3,649 genes were significantly differentially expressed between any two coloration stages, while 156 genes were differentially expressed among all three stages. Genes encoding enzymes involved in chlorophyll degradation and flavonoid biosynthesis were identified in the transcriptome dataset. The transcript expression patterns of the Stay Green (SGR) protein suggested a key role in chlorophyll degradation in the litchi pericarp, and this conclusion was supported by the result of an assay over-expressing LcSGR protein in tobacco leaves. We also found that the expression levels of most genes especially late anthocyanin biosynthesis genes were co-ordinated up-regulated coincident with the accumulation of anthocyanins, and that candidate MYB transcription factors that likely regulate flavonoid biosynthesis were identified. Conclusions: This study provides a large collection of transcripts and expression profiles associated with litchi fruit maturation processes, including coloration. Objective(s): P2X4R is expressed in immunocyte and lung tissues. It has been a focus in inflammatory responses recently. This study investigated whether blockage of P2X4R attenuates allergic inflammation by modulating T cell response in ovalbumin-sensitized mice. Materials and Methods: Ovalbumin was used to sensitize and challenge for a mouse model. Intranasal application of 5-BDBD, P2X4R antagonist, were performed 3 hr before each airway allergen challenge. The lung was evaluated for P2X4R by real-time PCR and immunofluorescence. Th1/Th2 cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were measured by ELISA. T-bet, Gata-3, and p-p38 MAPK were measured by Western blot or real-time PCR. Results: P2X4R was overexpressed in the lung after allergen challenge compared with the control group. Blockage of P2X4R decreased inflammation in the lung, IL-4 expression was reduced as well as IL-5; IFN-γ expression was elevated in BALF in ovalbumin-sensitized mice. Moreover, blockage of P2X4R inhibited ovalbumin-induced increased Gata-3 level and decreased T-bet level. Conclusion: These findings suggest that 5-BDBD ameliorates an ovalbumin-induced asthmatic attack by the downregulation of cytokines related to the Th2 cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: How to prepare a hydrogel with high strength and excellent tearing fracture energy is a problem faced by researchers. Here, tough and tear‐resistant double‐network hydrogels (Cx‐SMy gels) are successfully prepared via a facile strategy: micellar polymerization followed by solution polymerization. The strength and fracture energy of these hydrogels are up to 13 MPa and 26500 J m−2, respectively, which are attributed to the synergy of quatra‐crosslinking interactions inside the double‐network. The quatra‐crosslinking interactions include hydrophobic interaction, crystallization, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, it is confirmed that the facile strategy is a general way to prepare tough hydrogels by using electrolytic monomers and hydrophobic acrylates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presented are the ionothermal syntheses, characterizations, and photodegradation properties of four isostructural chalcogenidometalate compounds, namely, [Bmmim]5[In10Q16Cl3(Bim)] (Q = S (IL-InS-1), S7.12Se8.88 (IL-InSSe-2), Se (IL-InSe-3), Se13.80Te2.20 (IL-InSeTe-4); Bmmim = 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, Bim = 1-butyl-2-methylimidazole). According to the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, the title compounds belong to the C2/c space group and feature isolated supertetrahedral T3 anionic units of [In10Q16Cl3(Bim)]5– stabilized by [Bmmim]+ cations. The ionic liquid not only provided the [Bmmim]+ as the counterions but also acted as the reactive solvent releasing [Bim] ligands that are covalently bonded to In atoms. Unlike the widely reported extended frameworks that contain T3 InS/Se as building units, IL-InSe-3 represents the first example of discrete T3 InSe clusters, and the InTe-based discrete T3 cluster (IL-InSeTe-4) was characterized for the first time. The optical absorption edges of the title compounds showed gradual red shifts along with the change of chalcogens from S, S/Se, Se, to Se/Te. The influence of off-stoichiometry of Co2MnSi (CMS) spin sources on giant magnetoresistance characteristics was investigated for CMS/Ag-based current-perpendicular-to-plane spin valves prepared with various Mn compositions α in Co2MnαSi0.82 electrodes. The magnetoresistance ratio of the prepared CMS/Co50Fe50 (CoFe) (1.1 nm)/Ag/CoFe (1.1)/CMS spin valves systematically increased with α from 11.4% for Mn-deficient α=0.62 to 20.7% for Mn-rich α=1.45 at 290 K. This result suggests that increasing α from a Mn-deficient to Mn-rich value increases the spin polarization by suppressing CoMn antisites harmful to the half-metallicity. Thus, our results demonstrate that appropriately controlling the film composition toward a Mn-rich one is highly effective for enhancing the half-metallicity of CMS in CMS-based spin valves, as it is in CMS-based magnetic tunnel junctions. The crystal structure of the title polymer, {[Zn(C8H4O6S)(C10H8N2S)(H2O)]·-0.26H2O}n, is characterized by a layered arrangement parallel to the ab plane. The zinc cation is five-coordinated in a slightly distorted trigonal-bipyramidal coordination environment defined by two pyridine ligands, two carboxylate groups of two thiophene dicarboxylate ligands, and by one water molecule. Diet polyphenols--primarily categorized into flavonoids (e.g., flavonols, flavones, flavan-3-ols, anthocyanidins, flavanones, and isoflavones) and nonflavonoids (with major subclasses of stilbenes and phenolic acids)--are reported to have health-promoting effects, such as antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anticarcinoma, antimicrobial, antiviral, and cardioprotective properties. However, their applications in functional foods or medicine are limited because of their inefficient systemic delivery and poor oral bioavailability. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, curcumin, and resveratrol are the well-known representatives of the bioactive diet polyphenols but with poor bioavailability. Food macromolecule based nanoparticles have been fabricated using reassembled proteins, crosslinked polysaccharides, proteine--polysaccharide conjugates (complexes), as well as emulsified lipid via safe procedures that could be applied in food. The human gastrointestinal digestion tract is the first place where the food grade macromolecule nanoparticles exert their effects on improving the bioavailability of diet polyphenols, via enhancing their solubility, preventing their degradation in the intestinal environment, elevating the permeation in small intestine, and even increasing their contents in the bloodstream. We contend that the stability and structure behaviors of nanocarriers in the gastrointestinal tract environment and the effects of nanoencapsulation on the metabolism of polyphenols warrant more focused attention in further studies. Purpose/aim of the study: We aimed to evaluate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and cerebral white matter lesions (WMLs) in Chinese individuals.Material and methods: We prospectively identified patients aged 50 years and older in neurology department from July 2014 to March 2015. Both periventricular WMLs (P-WMLs) and deep WMLs (D-WMLs) were identified on magnetic resonance imanging (MRI) scans and the severity was graded using the Fazekas method. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between SUA and WMLs.Results: A total of 480 eligible participants were enrolled in this study. SUA level in severe group was much higher than that in mild group (for P-WMLs: 320.21 ± 79.97 vs. 286.29 ± 70.18,p= 0.000; for D-WMLs: 314.71 ± 74.74 vs. 290.07 ± 74.04,p= 0.031). Subgroup analyses showed that higher SUA level was associated with higher severity of P-WMLs in women, but not in male patients. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that SUA was still associated with increased risk of higher severity of P-WMLs (OR = 1.003, 95% = 1.000–1.006), but not D-WMLs.Conclusion: Elevated SUA level was independently associated with greater odds of higher severity of P-WMLs, particularly in women. SWEETs represent a new class of sugar transporters first described in plants, animals, and humans and later in prokaryotes. Plant SWEETs play key roles in phloem loading, seed filling, and nectar secretion, whereas the role of archaeal, bacterial, and animal transporters remains elusive. Structural analyses show that eukaryotic SWEETs are composed of 2 triple-helix bundles (THBs) fused via an inversion linker helix, whereas prokaryotic SemiSWEETs contain only a single THB and require homodimerization to form transport pores. This study indicates that SWEETs retained sugar transport activity in all kingdoms of life, and that SemiSWEETs are likely their ancestral units. Fusion of oligomeric subunits into single polypeptides during evolution of eukaryotes is commonly found for transporters. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that THBs of eukaryotic SWEETs may not have evolved by tandem duplication of an open reading frame, but rather originated by fusion between an archaeal and a bacterial SemiSWEET, which potentially explains the asymmetry of eukaryotic SWEETs. Moreover, despite the ancient ancestry, SWEETs had not been identified in fungi or oomycetes. Here, we report the identification of SWEETs in oomycetes as well as SWEETs and a potential SemiSWEET in primitive fungi. BdSWEET1 and BdSWEET2 from Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a nonhyphal zoosporic fungus that causes global decline in amphibians, showed glucose and fructose transport activities. Inspirations from nature have contributed fundamentally to the development of evolutionary computation. Learning from the natural ripple-spreading phenomenon, this article proposes a novel ripple-spreading algorithm (RSA) for the path optimization problem (POP). In nature, a ripple spreads at a constant speed in all directions, and the node closest to the source is the first to be reached. This very simple principle forms the foundation of the proposed RSA. In contrast to most deterministic top-down centralized path optimization methods, such as Dijkstra's algorithm, the RSA is a bottom-up decentralized agent-based simulation model. Moreover, it is distinguished from other agent-based algorithms, such as genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization, by being a deterministic method that can always guarantee the global optimal solution with very good scalability. Here, the RSA is specifically applied to four different POPs. The comparative simulation results illustrate the advantages of the RSA in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Thanks to the agent-based and deterministic features, the RSA opens new opportunities to attack some problems, such as calculating the exact complete Pareto front in multiobjective optimization and determining the kth shortest project time in project management, which are very difficult, if not impossible, for existing methods to resolve. An n-dodecane spray flame was simulated using a dynamic structure large-eddy simulation (LES) model coupled with a detailed chemistry combustion model to understand the ignition processes and the quasi-steady state flame structures. This study focuses on the effect of different ambient oxygen concentrations, 13%, 15%, and 21%, at an ambient temperature of WOK and an ambient density of 22.8kglm3, which are typical dieselengine relevant conditions with different levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The liquid spray was treated with a traditional Lagrangian method. A 103-species skeletal mechanism was used for the n-dodecane chemical kinetic model. It is observed that the main ignitions occur in rich mixture, and the flames are thickened around 35^10 mm off the spray axis due to the enhanced turbulence induced by the strong recirculation upstream, just behind the head of the flames at different oxygen concentrations. At 1 ms after the start of injection (SOI), the soot production is dominated by the broader region of high temperature in rich mixture instead of the stronger oxidation of the high peak temperature. Multiple realizations were performed for the 15% 0 2 condition to understand the realization-to-realization variation and to establish best practices for ensemble-averaging diesel spray flames. Two indexes are defined. The structuresimilarity index (SSI) analysis suggests that at least 5 realizations are needed to obtain 99% similarity for mixture fraction if the average of 16 realizations is used as the target at 0.8 ms. However, this scenario may be different for different scalars of interest. It is found that 6 realizations would be enough to reach 99% of similarity for temperature, while 8 and 14 realizations are required to achieve 99% similarity for soot and OH mass fraction, respectively. Similar findings are noticed at 1 ms. More realizations are needed for the magnitude-similarity index (MSI) for the similar level of similarity as the SSI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional Chinese Medicines, unique biomedical and pharmaceutical resources, have been widely used for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prevention and treatment. Accumulated Chinese herb-derived compounds with significant anti-cancer effects against HCC have been identified. Chinese herbal compounds are effective in preventing carcinogenesis, inhibiting cell proliferation, arresting cell cycle, inducing apoptosis, autophagy, cell senescence and anoikis, inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition, metastasis and angiogenesis, regulating immune function, reversing drug resistance and enhancing the effects of chemotherapy in HCC. This paper comprehensively reviews these compounds and their effects on HCC. Finally, the perspectives and rational application of herbal compounds for HCC management are discussed. This work presents a real-life experiment implementing an artificial intelligence model for detecting sub-millimeter cracks in metallic surfaces on a dataset obtained from a waveguide sensor loaded with metamaterial elements. Crack detection using microwave sensors is typically based on human observation of change in the sensor's signal (pattern) depicted on a high-resolution screen of the test equipment. However, as demonstrated in this work, implementing artificial intelligence to classify cracked from non-cracked surfaces has appreciable impacts in terms of sensing sensitivity, cost, and automation. Furthermore, applying artificial intelligence for post-processing the data collected from microwave sensors is a cornerstone for handheld test equipment that can outperform rack equipment with large screens and sophisticated plotting features. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to establish the damage alarming indexes for ancient wood structures and study the damage sensitivity and noise robustness of these indexes under random excitation. Design/methodology/approach -- Xi'an Bell Tower is taken as a case in this paper to simulate the damage of ancient wood structures through finite element (FE) simulation and determine the satisfactory damage alarming indexes with wavelet packet energy spectrum. Findings -- The results of this paper show that: 1) the damage alarming indexes can effectively identify the damage of ancient wood structures, each index with a different damage sensitivity; 2) the energy ratio deviation is greater than the energy ratio variance and is close to the maximum variation of energy ratio; 3) the energy ratio deviation has a better alarming effect than the energy ratio variance during the initial period of the damage. With the accumulation of the damage, the energy ratio variance outperforms the energy ratio deviation; 4) the sensitivity of the energy ratio deviation and variance varies from positions, changing from the highest to lowest at the mortise-and-tenon joints, the beam mid-span and the plinth; 5) if signal to noise ratio (SNR) is 40db or larger, the indexes can accurately identify the damage of ancient wood structures. As SNR increases, the indexes will have an increasingly higher sensitivity and certain ability to resist noise. Research limitations/implications -- The FE model is simpiy, it does not completely reflect Xi'an Bell Tower. Practical implications -- It will provide a theoretical basis for the damage alarming of Xi'an Bell Tower. Social implications -- It makes structural health monitoring through structural vibration response under ambient excitation a new research field in damage detection as well as a positive way of ancient architecture protection. Originality/value -- This paper studies the damage alarming effect on ancient wood structures from different wavelet functions and wavelet packet decomposition levels. To study the effect under white noise environment, this paper adds Gaussian white noise with a SNR of 10, 20, 30,40 and 50 db to the acceleration response signal of intact structure and damaged structure. Given several different new product development projects and limited resources, this paper is concerned with the optimal allocation of resources among the projects. This is clearly a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP), because each new product development project has both a profit expectation and a loss expectation, and such expectations vary according to allocated resources. In such a case, the goal of multi-objective new product development (MONPD) is to maximize the profit expectation while minimizing the loss expectation. As is well known, Pareto optimality and the Pareto front are extremely important to resolve MOOPs. Unlike many other MOOP methods which provide only a single Pareto optimal solution or an approximation of the Pareto front, this paper reports a novel method to calculate the complete Pareto front for the MONPD. Some theoretical conditions and a ripple-spreading algorithm together play a crucial role in finding the complete Pareto front for the MONPD. Background: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is an important human respiratory pathogen, particularly of infants and older adults, and despite several decades of research and development, no licensed vaccine is available. Studies have confirmed that enhancement of RSV disease does not occur after inoculation with RSV live-attenuated vaccine candidates, making such vaccines preferable. In this paper, reverse genetics was used to construct two recombinant viruses, a recombinant Long strain (rLong) and rLong-ΔG-EGFP; rLong-ΔG-EGFP is a recombinant mutant in which G was replaced with the EGFP gene, based on the Long strain of RSV. Results: Both rLong and rLong-ΔG-EGFP were constructed successfully and recovered in Hep-2 cells, and autofluorescence was observed in rLong-ΔG-EGFP-infected cells during consecutive passages. Titers of rLong and rLong-ΔG-EGFP were ~100-fold lower than the parental strain. Although virulence was attenuated, high titers of neutralizing antibodies were induced in BALB/c mice after being inoculated with recombinant viruses in a three-dose schedule. Unexpectedly, the neutralizing antibody titer in rLong-ΔG-EGFP-immunized recipients did not decline significantly compared with the rLong strain. Protective efficacy of recombinant viruses in lung tissue was up to 100%, and the serum neutralizing antibody levels could stabilize at 21 days with no significant fall post-challenge. Enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays showed that both recombinant viruses were capable of inducing CD8+ T cell immune responses, which are crucial for virus clearance, and that rLong stimulated a higher level of IFN-γ production by comparison. In terms of inducing a balanced immune response, rLong-ΔG-EGFP elicited slightly higher levels of IgG2a antibodies and lower levels of IgG1/IgG2a than the rLong virus. Conclusions: This study suggested that immunization with rLong and rLong-ΔG-EGFP were immunogenic and protected against RSV infection in the lower respiratory tract of BALB/c mice better than in the nose. Because of a relative low IgG1/IgG2a ratio, rLong-ΔG-EGFP was more inclined to make CD4+ T cells, shifting toward a Th1-type response, indicating that the generation of a more balanced Th1/Th2 response was desirable. Background and study aims: There are limited data on the role of antireflux biliary stents. This single-center randomized trial compared the endoscopic use of partly covered antireflux metal stents (pcARMS) with that of standard uncovered self-expandable metal stents (ucSEMS) for the palliation of nonhilar malignant biliary obstruction. Patients and methods: Between August 2007 and February 2012, patients with nonhilar malignant biliary obstruction were randomly assigned to treatment with either pcARMS or ucSEMS. Subsequent follow-up was conducted in clinic or by phone. The primary outcome was onset of cholangitis within 12 months of stenting. Secondary outcomes included other morbidities, stent dysfunctions, and survival. Results: Altogether 112 patients were included, 56 in each group. The stents were successfully deployed in all patients. Satisfactory jaundice control was achieved in 49 cases in the pcARMS group, compared with 47 in the ucSEMS group (P=0.135). Fewer patients experienced cholangitis in the pcARMS group than in the ucSEMS group (10 vs. 21 patients; P=0.035), and the frequency of episodes was less (P=0.022). Respectively, 17 and 29 stent dysfunctions before death were observed in the pcARMS and ucSEMS groups (P=0.051) and the median stent patency was 13.0 (standard deviation [SD] 3.4) and 10.0 (1.2) months, respectively (P=0.044). At final follow- up, in January 2013, 50/52 and 52/55 patients had died and no difference in median survival was seen between the two groups (8.0 vs. 9.0 months, P=0.56). In this paper, the problem of mixed additive/multiplicative model reduction for stable linear continuous-time systems is studied. To deal with nonsquare or nonminimum phase systems, the multiplicative error bound is constructed using spectral factorization technique. By virtue of the bounded real lemma and the projection lemma, a linear matrix inequality approach is proposed for mixed additive!multiplicative H model reduction, which can be implemented by the well-known cone complementary linearization method. Abstract Objective: This meta-analysis was to compare clinical outcomes of intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (IV rtPA) administered within 3 hours versus 3-4.5 hours after symptom onset. Methods: We collected all interventional or observational studies that compared clinical outcomes of IV rtPA treatment within 3 hours and 3-4.5 hours after acute ischemic stroke onset by searching PubMed (up to October 2012), Embase (1966 to October 2012) and Web of Science (2003 to October 2012) as well as manually searching the references of articles retrieved. The combined effect was calculated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to analyze favorable functional outcome, mortality and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) at 90 days. Publication bias was analyzed by Begg's funnel plot and Egger's regression test. Results: Our initial search identified a total of 27,391 articles. After reviewing the titles, abstracts and full text, a total of six studies and more than 25,000 patients were included in the final meta-analysis. The combined analyses demonstrated significant differences in the favorable outcome (modified Rankin scale, mRS: 0-2): OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.81-0.98 and very favorable outcomes (mRS: 0-1): OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.78-0.94 between two groups, which were both in favor of the 3-4.5 hours group. When all studies reporting data on sICH were combined, the overall summary OR indicated no differences in the two groups. The combined analyses showed no significant differences in 90 day mortality and 7 day mortality between within 3 hours and 3-4.5 hours. Conclusions: This meta-analysis does not provide any evidence that treatment with rtPA within 3-4.5 hours is less safe than treatment within 3 hours. It suggests that treatment with IV rtPA may be recommended to ischemic stroke patients that present within 4.5 hours of onset, although every effort should be made to give those patients IV rtPA within 3 hours of symptom onset. An important and unresolved issue in rotating thermal turbulence is when the flow starts to feel the centrifugal effect. This onset problem is studied here by a novel experiment in which the centrifugal force can be varied over a wide range at fixed Rossby numbers by offsetting the apparatus from the rotation axis. Our experiment clearly shows that the centrifugal force starts to separate the hot and cold fluids at the onset Froude number 0.04. Additionally, this flow bifurcation leads to an unexpected heat transport enhancement and the existence of an optimal state. Two types of oxidation behavior were observed in a Ni-based superalloy that corresponds to a single stage of parabolic law for Type I and multiple subparabolic laws for Type II. In the type I model, the Cr content was matched in the external oxidation of the Cr 2 O 3 layer, thereby favoring the formation of a continuous and compact Cr 2 O 3 layer. Since Ni cannot readily diffuse through Cr 2 O 3 , it tends to remain in the alloy leading to the Ni is enriched at the metal/oxide interface. Moreover, the enrichment of Ni increased with the increase of exposure times. In comparison, the depletion degree of chromium in the γ′-free zone fails to maintain the growth of Cr 2 O 3 , NiO to precipitate in the Cr 2 O 3 layer and increasing the formation of voids in the surface film. Beyond the microstructural results, we explore the oxidation mechanism in the two types of oxidation behavior. • Two type models of oxidation behavior were characterized. • In the type I model, oxidation kinetics obeyed parabolic law and exhibited one stage. • In the type II model, oxidation kinetics displayed multi-stages and deviated from parabolic law. • The kinetics behavior in the two type models is attributed to the evolution of outer layer. • Relationship between the elemental distribution characteristics in the γ′-free zone and film evolution was revealed. To evaluate the role of m6A methylation of mRNAs and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in chronic allergic asthma. Transcriptome-wide N6-methyladenosine (m6A) changes in BALB/c mice were profiled using immunoprecipitated methylated RNAs with microarrays in lung with chronic allergic asthma. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG analyses were conducted. Target genes were verified by methylated RNA immunoprecipitation and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Specifically, the mRNA levels of m6A writers (METTL3, METTL14, and WTAP), and readers and erasers (FTO and ALKBH5) were estimated by real-time PCR analysis, using the SYBR-green method. IL17RB mRNA was also evaluated by PCR. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining showed that the airway and lung tissues in mice in the asthma group had extensive infiltration of inflammatory cells around the bronchioles, blood vessels, and alveoli. The lungs of those allergic asthma mice showed altered m6A epitranscriptome, whereby 1369 mRNAs and 176 lncRNAs were hypermethylated, and 197 mRNAs and 30 lncRNAs were hypomethylated (>1.5-fold vs control). Also, compared with the control group, IL17RB mRNA in lung of the asthmatic group was significantly hypermethylated (P<0.01). In the asthma group, the mRNA and the protein level of METTL14 (the key methyltransferase) and ALKBH5 (the major demethyltransferase) were significantly decreased compared with the control group (P<0.01). Chronic allergic asthma alters the lung m6A epitranscriptome, suggesting functional implications in the pathophysiology of refractory asthma. Introduction: Water-aided colonoscopy can be categorized by the timing of removal of infused water, predominantly during withdrawal (water immersion) or during insertion (water exchange), respectively. Objective: To assess the impact of water immersion and water exchange on insertion pain and adenoma detection rate, when compared with air insulation colonoscopy. Setting: published randomized controlled trial (RCT) that compared water immersion or water exchange with air insulation. Patients: patients undergoing colonoscopy. Interventions: Medline, pubMed, Google searches (January 2008 to December 2011) to identify appropriate RCTs. Main Outcome Measurements: pain during insertion phase and adenoma detection rate. Method: Review Manager Software (Version 5.1, Cochrane Collaboration, UK). Results: pain scores of both water-aided methods are lower than that of the air insulation method. Subgroup analysis shows that compared with air insulation, the water exchange group had a greater mean reduction of maximum pain during insertion -2.73 (-3.29, -2.18) than the water immersion group -1.31 (-1.64, -0.97). There is no significant diference in overall adenoma detection rate between water-aided methods and air insulation. Subgroup analysis shows that compared with air insulation, the water exchange group had higher adenoma detection rate, OR 1.52, (95% CI: 1.08-2.14) than the water immersion group, OR 0.92, (95%CI: 0.70-1.21). Limitation: Unblinded colonoscopists exposed observations to uncertain bias. Conclusion: compared with air insulation, the data presentation in a meta-analysis format show that both water immersion and water exchange significantly reduce insertion pain. Epidemiological studies have evaluated the association between interleukin-1 (IL-1)α C(−889)T polymorphism and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the results remain inconclusive. This meta-analysis was, therefore, designed to clarify these controversies. Systematic searches of electronic databases Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science as well as hand searching of the references of identified articles and the meeting abstracts were performed. Statistical analyses were performed using software Review Manager (Version 5.1.2) and Stata (Version 11.0). The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) were calculated. A total of 28 publications including 29 studies were involved. There was a significant association between IL-1α C(−889)T polymorphism and AD (for T allele vs. C allele: OR = 1.14, 95 % CI = 1.07-1.21; for T/T vs. C/C: OR = 1.39, 95 % CI = 1.18-1.63; for dominant model: OR = 1.13, 95 % CI = 1.04-1.22; and for recessive model: OR = 1.39, 95 % CI = 1.20-1.60). Significant association was found for Asians, Caucasians, and early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) but for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). This meta-analysis was therefore designed to clarify these controversies. Methodology/Principal Findings: Systematic searches of electronic databases Embase, PubMed and Web of Science, as well as hand searching of the references of identified articles and the meeting abstracts were performed. Statistical analyses were performed using software Review Manager (Version 5.1.7) and Stata (Version 11.0). The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were performed. Fixed or random effects model was separately used depending on the heterogeneity between studies. Publication bias was tested by Begg's funnel plot and Egger's regression test. A total of 6 studies including 1,948 cases and 2,357 controls were combined showing no statistical evidence of association between NADPH oxidase p22phox C242T polymorphism and overall ICVD (allelic model: OR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.93–1.26; additive model: OR = 1.33, 95%CI = 0.81–2.17; dominant model: OR = 1.00, 95%CI = 0.86–1.15; recessive model: OR = 1.06, 95%CI = 0.77–1.45). Significant association was found in large-artery atherosclerotic stroke subgroup (allelic model: OR = 1.12, 95%CI = 0.88–1.41; additive model: OR = 1.36, 95%CI = 0.60–3.09; dominant model: OR = 1.25, 95%CI = 0.74–2.11; recessive model: OR = 2.17, 95%CI = 1.11–4.23). No statistical evidence of significant association was observed for small-vessel occlusive stroke, as well as Asian subgroup and Caucasian subgroup. Statistical powers on the combined sample size (total and subgroup) were all lower than 80%. Conclusions/Significance: This meta-analysis indicates that NADPH oxidase p22phox C242T polymorphism is more associated with large-artery atherosclerotic stroke than small-vessel occlusive stroke. However, this conclusion should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. Larger sample-size studies with homogeneous ICVD patients and well-matched controls are required. Mathematical analysis and modelling is central to infectious disease epidemiology. This paper, inspired by the natural ripplespreading phenomenon, proposes a novel ripple-spreading network model for the study of infectious disease transmission. The new epidemic model naturally has good potential for capturingmany spatial and temporal features observed in the outbreak of plagues. In particular, using a stochastic ripple-spreading process simulates the effect of random contacts and movements of individuals on the probability of infection well, which is usually a challenging issue in epidemic modeling. Some ripple-spreading related parameters such as threshold and amplifying factor of nodes are ideal to describe the importance of individuals' physical fitness and immunity. The new model is rich in parameters to incorporate many real factors such as public health service and policies, and it is highly flexible to modifications. A genetic algorithm is used to tune the parameters of the model by referring to historic data of an epidemic. The well-tuned model can then be used for analyzing and forecasting purposes. We investigate synchronizing fractional-order Volta chaotic systems with nonidentical orders in finite time. Firstly, the fractional chaotic system with the same structure and different orders is changed to the chaotic systems with identical orders and different structure according to the property of fractional differentiation. Secondly, based on the lemmas of fractional calculus, a controller is designed according to the changed fractional chaotic system to synchronize fractional chaotic with nonidentical order in finite time. Small-world and scale-free properties are widely acknowledged in many real-world complex network systems, and many network models have been developed to capture these network properties. The ripple-spreading network model (RSNM) is a newly reported complex network model, which is inspired by the natural ripple-spreading phenomenon on clam water surface. The RSNM exhibits good potential for describing both spatial and temporal features in the development of many real-world networks where the influence of a few local events spreads out through nodes and then largely determines the final network topology. However, the relationships between ripple-spreading related parameters (RSRPs) of RSNM and small-world and scale-free topologies are not as obvious or straightforward as in many other network models. This paper attempts to apply genetic algorithm (GA) to tune the values of RSRPs, so that the RSNM may generate these two most important network topologies. The study demonstrates that, once RSRPs are properly tuned by GA, the RSNM is capable of generating both network topologies and therefore has a great flexibility to study many real-world complex network systems. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) was successfully encapsulated in novel nanocomplexes assembled from bioactive peptides, caseinophosphopeptides (CPPs), and chitosan (CS), a natural cationic polymer. Their particle sizes and surface charges were determined to be in the range of 150.0 ± 4.3 nm and 32.2 ± 3.3 mV respectively. Crosslinking between the NH3+ groups of CS with the PO− and COO− groups of CPP, as well as the hydrogen bonding were confirmed from the FTIR results. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed that EGCG loaded CS–CPP nanocomplexes were spherical in shape. Maintaining the surface charge as high as +32.2 mV, crosslinking CS with peptides reduced the cytotoxicity of CS nanoparticles. In addition, cellular internalization of EGCG-loaded CS–CPP nanoparticles was confirmed from green fluorescence inside the Caco-2 cells. The process of nanoparticle uptake was dose and time dependent in the range of time and concentration studied. Furthermore, the intestinal permeability of EGCG using Caco-2 monolayer was enhanced significantly as delivered by nanoparticles, which indicated the promising elevation of EGCG bioavailability. Abstract: Background: Meta-analysis in European population found no association between rs12425791/rs11833579 and ischemic stroke. Several studies focused on East Asians have evaluated the association between this two SNPs and risk of ischemic stroke, but the results have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis to investigate a more authentic association between rs12425791 and rs11833579 G>A mutation and ischemic stroke in East Asian population, as well as in Chinese Han population. Methods: Systematic searches of electronic databases Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and CBM as well as hand searching of the references of identified articles and the meeting abstracts were performed. Study selection, data abstraction and study quality evaluation were independently conducted in duplicate. Statistical analyses were performed using software Stata 11.0. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were performed. Different effects models were used according to the difference in heterogeneity. Publication bias was tested by Begg''s funnel plot and Egger''s regression test. Results: A total of 4 publications including 7 studies were involved. For rs12425791, significant association was found in allelic model (OR=1.06, 95%CI=1.00–1.11) and dominant model (OR=1.10, 95%CI=1.03–1.18), whereas no evidence of association was found for additive model (OR=1.04, 95%CI=0.93–1.17) and for recessive model (OR=0.99, 95%CI=0.88–1.10). For rs11833579, no evidence of association was found for all genetic models. In the analysis of Chinese Han population, there is lack of evidence for association of ischemic stroke for both SNPs. Conclusions: In summary, our meta-analysis suggests that rs12425791 is significantly associated with ischemic stroke in East Asian population but not Chinese Han population, of which A alleles increase the risk of ischemic stroke, whereas no evidence of association was found for rs11833579 in East Asian population as well as Chinese Han population. Anoikis has been recognized as a potential target for anticancer therapy. Polygonum cuspidatum (Huzhang) is a frequently used Chinese herb in hepatocarcinoma. In present study, we evaluated the effects of Polygonum cuspidatum extract (PCE) in hepatocarcinoma cells in suspension. The results showed that PCE inhibited the proliferation of hepatocarcinoma cells in suspension in a dose- and time-dependent manner. PCE also inhibited anchorage-independent growth of hepatocarcinoma cells in soft agar. PCE induced anoikis in human hepatocarcinoma Bel-7402 cells accompanied by caspase-3 and caspase-9 activation and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage, which was completely abrogated by a pan caspase inhibitor, Z-VADF MK. In addition, PCE treatment induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in Bel-7402 cells. NAC, an ROS scavenger, partially attenuated PCE-induced anoikis and activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9. Furthermore, PCE inhibited expression of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) in Bel-7402 cells. Overexpression of FAK partially abrogated PCE-induced anoikis. These data suggest that PCE may inhibit suspension growth and induce caspase-mediated anoikis in hepatocarcinoma cells and may relate to ROS generation and FAK downregulation. This paper proposes a deterministic complex network model, which is inspired by the natural ripple-spreading phenomenon. The motivations and main advantages of the model are the following: (i) The establishment of many real-world networks is a dynamic process, where it is often observed that the influence of a few local events spreads out through nodes, and then largely determines the final network topology. Obviously, this dynamic process involves many spatial and temporal factors. By simulating the natural ripple-spreading process, this paper reports a very natural way to set up a spatial and temporal model for such complex networks. (ii) Existing relevant network models are all stochastic models, i.e., with a given input, they cannot output a unique topology. Differently, the proposed ripple-spreading model can uniquely determine the final network topology, and at the same time, the stochastic feature of complex networks is captured by randomly initializing ripple-spreading related parameters. (iii) The proposed model can use an easily manageable number of ripple-spreading related parameters to precisely describe a network topology, which is more memory efficient when compared with traditional adjacency matrix or similar memory-expensive data structures. Salinity stress is an important environmental constraint limiting the productivity of many crops worldwide. In this report, experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of seed presoaking by bovine hemoglobin, an inducer of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), on salinity tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa) plants. The results showed that different concentrations of the hemoglobin (0.01, 0.05, 0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 g/L) differentially alleviated the inhibition of rice seed germination and thereafter seedling shoot growth caused by 100 mM NaCl stress, and the responses of 1.0 g/L hemoglobin was the most obvious. Further analyses showed that application of hemoglobin not only increased the HO-1 gene expression, but also differentially induced catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities or transcripts, thus decreasing the lipid peroxidation in germinating rice seeds subjected to salt stress. Compared with non-hemoglobin treatment, hemoglobin presoaking also increased the potassium (K) to sodium (Na) ratio both in the root and shoot parts after salinity stress. The effect is specific for HO-1 since the potent HO-1 inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPPIX) blocked the positive actions of hemoglobin on seed germination and seedling shoot growth. When genetic algorithms (GAs) are applied to combinatorial problems, permutation representations are usually adopted. As a result, such GAs are often confronted with feasibility and memory-efficiency problems. With the aircraft sequencing problem (ASP) as a study case, this paper reports on a novel binary-representation-based GA scheme for combinatorial problems. Unlike existing GAs for the ASP, which typically use permutation representations based on aircraft landing order, the new GA introduces a novel ripple-spreading model which transforms the original landing-order-based ASP solutions into value-based ones. In the new scheme, arriving aircraft are projected as points into an artificial space. A deterministic method inspired by the natural phenomenon of ripple-spreading on liquid surfaces is developed, which uses a few parameters as input to connect points on this space to form a landing sequence. A traditional GA, free of feasibility and memory-efficiency problems, can then be used to evolve the ripple-spreading related parameters in order to find an optimal sequence. Since the ripple-spreading model is the centerpiece of the new algorithm, it is called the ripple-spreading GA (RSGA). AbstractCurcuma aromaticais a common Chinese herb for treating diseases with blood stasis and has been regarded as an anticancer herb in modern clinical practice. However, the anticancer effects and related molecular mechanisms of Curcuma aromaticaremain unclear. In the present study, human colon carcinoma LS-174-T cell line with wild-type p53 was used as a model cell to evaluate the anticancer effects of aqueous extract of Curcuma aromatica(AECA). AECA inhibits LS-174-T cell proliferation in a dose- and time-dependent manner and colony formation in a dose-dependent manner. AECA treatment induces apoptosis accompanied by caspase-8, -9, and -3 activation in LS-174-T cells. Moreover, blocking the activities of these caspases with a specific inhibitor significantly protected LS-174-T cells from AECA-induced apoptosis. AECA treatment also induces G2/M phase arrest in LS-174-T cells. Expression of p53 was unchanged after AECA treatment; specific silence of p53 did not influence AECA-induced apoptosis and G2/M phase arrest. Further, the expression of cyclin B1 and CDK1 was reduced by AECA. This study suggests that AECA might be effective as an antiproliferative herb for colon carcinoma, the antitumor activity of AECA may involve both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis, and AECA induces G2/M phase arrest via downregulation of cyclin B1 and CDK1 and without the participation of p53. We study the initial-boundary problem of dissipative symmetric regularized long wave equations with damping term. Crank-Nicolson nonlinear-implicit finite difference scheme is designed. Existence and uniqueness of numerical solutions are derived. It is proved that the finite difference scheme is of second-order convergence and unconditionally stable by the discrete energy method. AbstractBackground and Purpose:Currently, there is no reliable method of monitoring the propagation of radiofrequency lesions in real time. We report our animal experience using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) to evaluate the lesion produced by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in a canine model and investigate the feasibility to predict these lesions.Materials and Methods:Five male beagle dogs underwent RFA of the prostate. Radiofrequency was delivered under transrectal ultrasonography guidance. We created a lesion in the right and left lateral lobes of canine prostate. Post-RFA lesion size was measured with conventional ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced low-mechanical index perfusion imaging (ESAOTE DU8, CnTI) with a second-generation contrast agent (Sonovue™). The prostates were assessed for a contrast void corresponding to the ablated tissue. All dogs were then immediately killed, and the prostates were harvested for pathologic analysis. The gross RFA lesions were measured to compare lesion size with that measured using CEUS.Results:The RFA lesions could not be imaged accurately in real time with conventional grayscale or power Doppler sonography. With CEUS imaging, a clear lesion was identified at the site of each RFA application. As measured by CEUS, the lesions volume averaged 1.30 ± 0.50 cm3, compared with 1.32 ± 0.53 cm3by measurement in the gross specimen (p= 0.324).Conclusions:CEUS appears to be an accurate modality for immediate monitoring of RFA procedure. We describe a method of exchanging a blocked nasojejunal (NJ) tube involving the use of a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty balloon to rupture the tube, followed by insertion of a guidewire through this rupture to create a guide for subsequent placement of a modified NJ tube. We used this technique in a child with a critical need for an NJ tube, in whom routine guidewire exchange was not feasible because of tube obstruction as well as the patient’s anatomic abnormalities. Wallerian degeneration (WD), composed of the breakdown and phagocytosis of damaged axons and their myelin sheaths distal to the injury, is a major sequela of spinal cord injury (SCI). To understand the microenvironment within WD that may affect repair following SCI, we investigated the fate of major glial types and axons in this region following acute (1 h), subacute (10 days), and chronic (30 days) dorsal funiculotomy at the eighth thoracic (T8) level. This lesion induces a confined WD in two distinct functional pathways, that is, the corticospinal tract (CST) and dorsal ascending tract (DAT) in opposite directions. Here we report that astrocytes, reactive microglia and macrophages were all significantly increased in areas of WD in both the CST and DAT at subacute and chronic stages compared to the sham-operated or acute stage. While the level of GFAP+ astrocytes remained stable after the subacute stage, the number of OX-42+ microglia and ED-1+ macrophages markedly decreased at the chronic stage. Interestingly, a mild but significant increase in ED-1+ macrophages was also found in the intact fiber tracts 3 mm proximal to the injury at the chronic stage, coinciding with axonal dieback observed at that level. Axons distal to the injury experienced a continued and prolonged degeneration in both fiber tracts. Finally, although a significant decrease of Olig2+ oligodendrocyte lineage (OL) cells was found in areas of WD, the presence of these cells at the chronic stage indicates that they are available for endogenous repair. Taken together, our data have provided spatiotemporal evidence for the dynamic pathogenic changes of major cellular components in areas of WD remote to an SCI. Information obtained in this study should be useful for designing experiments aimed at modifying this region to accommodate endogenous or exogenous repair following SCI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A polyacrylamide gel (PAG) containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) is introduced as a new tissue-mimicking phantom for the purpose of visualizing three-dimensional coagulation temperature distribution during radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The coagulation temperature of the phantom can be changed at the same range of biological tissue (50-60°C) by adjusting the pH from 4.3 to 4.7. The phantom is transparent except in thermal coagulation regions which are ivory white. The physical properties of the phantom, such as density, electrical conductivity and specific heat capacity, are very favorable, similar to those of soft tissues. We illustrate the usefulness of the phantom in visualizing RFA lesions. This phantom has magnetic resonance properties which change drastically upon thermal coagulation, enabling its use for the characterization of RFA device, quality assurance, treatment planning and treatment verfication. The PAG containing BSA, whose pH was adjusted from 4.3 to 4.7, is an attractive tissue-mimicking phantom suitable for RFA investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
