Abstract

Abstract The mode mixing problem and inherent mode function selection bias in Fast Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (FEEMD) result in ineffective extraction of fault components during the denoising stage, the loss of coarse-grained information in Multiscale Fuzzy Dispersion Entropy (MFDE) reduces the stability of fault features, and the lack of adaptability of CatBoost hyperparameters leads to reduced diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, a complex variable operating condition fault diagnosis method based on Fast Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (FCEEMD) - Time-shift Multiscale Fuzzy Dispersion Entropy (TSMFDE) and adaptive Optuna-CatBoost is proposed. We introduce paired white noise with opposite signs in the construction of FCEEMD, effectively suppressing mode aliasing by neutralizing the residual noise generated during decomposition. Then, the Maximum Information Coefficient / Gini Index was introduced to construct a composite screening strategy, retaining the Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) components that are strongly correlated with the original signal and have a fault impact to reconstruct the denoised signal. Secondly, time-shift multiscale is introduced into the coarse-grained process, and the constructed TSMFDE effectively extracts complete and stable fault features. Finally, with the introduction of the Optuna hyperparameter optimization framework, the adaptive Optuna-CatBoost can accurately diagnose bearing faults. The average fault diagnosis accuracy of the proposed method reached 99.76% and 99.33%, indicating that FCEEMD based on white noise can quickly and accurately decompose non-aliasing vibration modes, and the composite screening strategy can further filter out irrelevant noise modes and improve signal quality; The proposed TSMFDE can extract stable fault features, and its combination with Optuna-CatBoost can further improve the accuracy of fault diagnosis. This model is expected to be applied in more fields of feature extraction and pattern recognition.

Abstract

The fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) is a crucial receptor tyrosine kinase involved in essential biological processes, including growth, development, and tissue repair. However, FGFR gene mutations, including amplification, fusion, and mutation, can disrupt epigenetics, transcriptional regulation, and tumor microenvironment interactions, leading to cancer development. Targeting these kinase mutations with small molecule drugs or antibodies has shown clinical benefits. For example, erdafitinib is approved for treating locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer patients with FGFR2/FGFR3 mutations, and pemigatinib is approved for treating cholangiocarcinoma with FGFR2 fusion/rearrangement. Effective screening of FGFR variant patients is crucial for the clinical application of FGFR inhibitors. Various detection methods, such as polymerase chain reaction, next-generation sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistry, are available, and their selection should be based on diagnostic and treatment decision-making needs. Our developed expert consensus aims to standardize the diagnosis and treatment process for FGFR gene mutations and facilitate the practical application of FGFR inhibitors in clinical practice.

Abstract

The fusion genes NRG1 and NRG2, members of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor family, have emerged as key drivers in cancer. Upon fusion, NRG1 retains its EGF-like active domain, binds to the ERBB ligand family, and triggers intracellular signaling cascades, promoting uncontrolled cell proliferation. The incidence of NRG1 gene fusion varies across cancer types, with lung cancer being the most prevalent at 0.19 to 0.27%. CD74 and SLC3A2 are the most frequently observed fusion partners. RNA-based next-generation sequencing is the primary method for detecting NRG1 and NRG2 gene fusions, whereas pERBB3 immunohistochemistry can serve as a rapid prescreening tool for identifying NRG1-positive patients. Currently, there are no approved targeted drugs for NRG1 and NRG2. Common treatment approaches involve pan-ERBB inhibitors, small molecule inhibitors targeting ERBB2 or ERBB3, and monoclonal antibodies. Given the current landscape of NRG1 and NRG2 in solid tumors, a consensus among diagnostic and treatment experts is proposed, and clinical trials hold promise for benefiting more patients with NRG1 and NRG2 gene fusion solid tumors.

Abstract

Abstract The rearranged during transfection (RET) gene is one of the receptor tyrosine kinases and cell‐surface molecules responsible for transmitting signals that regulate cell growth and differentiation. In non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), RET fusion is a rare driver gene alteration associated with a poor prognosis. Fortunately, two selective RET inhibitors (sRETi), namely pralsetinib and selpercatinib, have been approved for treating RET fusion NSCLC due to their remarkable efficacy and safety profiles. These inhibitors have shown the ability to overcome resistance to multikinase inhibitors (MKIs). Furthermore, ongoing clinical trials are investigating several second‐generation sRETis that are specifically designed to target solvent front mutations, which pose a challenge for first‐generation sRETis. The effective screening of patients is the first crucial step in the clinical application of RET‐targeted therapy. Currently, four methods are widely used for detecting gene rearrangements: next‐generation sequencing (NGS), reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Each of these methods has its advantages and limitations. To streamline the clinical workflow and improve diagnostic and treatment strategies for RET fusion NSCLC, our expert group has reached a consensus. Our objective is to maximize the clinical benefit for patients and promote standardized approaches to RET fusion screening and therapy.

Abstract

To achieve a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis of faults in rolling bearings, a method for diagnosing rolling bearing faults has been proposed. This method is based on Multivariate Variational Mode Decomposition (MVMD) signal reconstruction, Multivariate Multiscale Dispersion Entropy (MMDE)-Generalized Normal Distribution Optimization (GNDO), and Marine predators’ algorithm-based optimization support vector machine (MPA-SVM). Firstly, by using a joint evaluation function (energy*|correlation coefficient|), the multi-channel vibration signals of rolling bearings after MVMD decomposition are denoised and reconstructed. Afterward, MMDE is applied to fuse the information from the reconstructed signal and construct a high-dimensional fault feature set. Following that, GNDO is used to select features and extract a subset of low-dimensional features that are sensitive and easy to classify. Finally, MPA is used to realize the adaptive selection of important parameters in the SVM classifier. Fault diagnosis experiments are carried out using datasets provided by the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Paderborn University (PU). The MVMD signal reconstruction method can effectively filter out the noise components of each channel. MMDE-GNDO can availably mine multi-channel fault features and eliminate redundant (or interference) items. The MPA-SVM classifier can identify faults in different working conditions with an average accuracy of 99.72% and 100%, respectively. The results demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency, and stability of the proposed method.

6. Epigenetic Input Dictates the Threshold of Targeting of the Integrin-Dependent Pathway in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract

We investigated the therapeutic potential of targeting integrin/FAK-dependent signaling, an adhesion receptor-mediated pathway that has been increasingly linked to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) malignancy. Our analysis of the TCGA cohort showed that a subset of pro-tumorigenic integrins, including α1β1, α2β1, α3β1, α5β1, and α6β4, were frequently amplified or upregulated at the genomic or mRNA level in KRAS or EGFR mutation/overexpression-enriched adenocarcinomas. These alterations appeared complementary, correlated with poor patient survival (p < 0.0072), and were collaborative with KRAS mutation-coupled αv integrins (p < 0.00159). Since integrin/FAK-dependent signaling is tightly coupled with normal human physiology, we sought to use a synthetic lethal-type targeting comprising of VS-6063, a chemical inhibitor of integrin-mediated FAK activity, and A549 cells, which carry a KRAS mutation and EGFR overexpression. Our screening analysis revealed that JQ1 and IBET-762, inhibitors of epigenetic reader BRD4, and LBH589, a pan inhibitor of histone deacetylases (HDACs), exhibited synergy with VS-6063 in mitigating tumor cell viability. This epigenetic link was corroborated by strong effects of additional inhibitors and RNAi-mediated knockdown of FAK and BRD4 or its downstream effector, c-Myc. Low doses of JQ1 (≤0.5 μM) markedly escalated efficacy of VS-6063 across a panel of 10 NSCLC cell lines. This catalyst-like effect is in line with the oncogenic landscape in the TCGA cohort since c-Myc falls downstream of the KRAS and EGFR oncogenes. Mechanistically, co-inhibiting the integrin-FAK and BRD4/c-Myc axes synergistically induced apoptotic cell death and DNA damage response, and impaired stemness-associated tumorsphere formation. These effects were accompanied by a marked inhibition of Akt- and p130Cas/Src-dependent signaling, but not Erk1/2 activity. Meanwhile, JQ1 alone or in combination with VS-6063 attenuated cell-cell adhesion and extracellular matrix (ECM)-dependent cell spreading, which is reminiscent of phenotype induced by malfunctional E-cadherin or integrins. Paradoxically, this phenotypic impact coincided with downregulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-inducting transcription factor ZEB1 or Snail. Finally, we showed that the effect of the VS-6063/JQ1 combination was nearly equivalent to that of VS-6063 plus Carboplatin or Osimertinib. Overall, our study indicates that the integrin/FAK and BRD4/c-Myc axes cooperatively drive NSCLC virulence, and a co-targeting may provide a line of therapy capable of overcoming EGFR/KRAS-driven malignancy.

Abstract

Image-based autonomous driving control is one of the important research directions in the field of autonomous driving. Most of the existing image-based control algorithms use end-to-end mapping from image to vehicle control amount, which is not explanatory enough, and the control amount is not intuitive enough to effectively implement human-machine collaborative control and incremental learning of models. This paper proposes an incremental learning algorithm for driving vehicle control based on fast pursuit point estimation. We establish a model to calculate the mapping of image to the pursuit point, and then get the actual control amount of the vehicle throttle value and front-wheel rotation angle value by the pursuit point. Combining the features of pursuit point which can be observed intuitively and has obvious physical meaning, we propose an incremental model updating method based on man-machine collaborative control, which can incrementally improve the model performance in the actual driving process of vehicles. Finally, the experiment of automatic control is carried out on the Carla simulation platform. The experimental results show that the algorithm can incrementally improve the performance of the automatic control model, with the average calculation speed over 50fps. The autonomous driving system realizes automatic cruise in the real campus environment.

Abstract

Purpose Stemming from a myriad of genetic and epigenetic alterations, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is tied to poor clinical outcomes and aspires for individualized therapies. Here we investigated the therapeutic potential of co-inhibiting integrin-dependent signaling pathway and BRD4, a transcriptional and epigenetic mediator, for TNBC. Methods Two independent patient cohorts were subjected to bioinformatic and IHC examination for clinical association of candidate cancer drivers. The efficacy and biological bases for co-targeting these drivers were interrogated using cancer cell lines, a protein kinase array, chemical inhibitors, RNAi/CRISPR/Cas9 approaches, and a 4 T1-Balb/c xenograft model. Results We found that amplification of the chromosome 8q24 region occurred in nearly 20% of TNBC tumors, and that it coincided with co-upregulation or amplification of c-Myc and FAK, a key effector of integrin-dependent signaling. This co-upregulation at the mRNA or protein level correlated with a poor patient survival (p p + myeloid-derived suppressor cells in vivo. Finally, we found that JQ1 and VS-6063 cooperatively induced apoptotic cell death by altering XIAP, Bcl2/Bcl-xl and Bim levels, impairing c-Src/p130Cas-, PI3K/Akt- and RelA-associated signaling, and were linked to EMT-inducing transcription factor Snail- and Slug-dependent regulation. Conclusion Based on our results, we conclude that the BRD4/c-Myc- and integrin/FAK-dependent pathways act in concert to promote breast cancer cell survival and poor clinical outcomes. As such, they represent promising targets for a synthetic lethal-type of therapy against TNBC.

Reduce the rate of acid-rock reaction is a key problem in the acidizing field. In order to reduce the damage of adsorption of traditional gelled acid in carbonate porous media, and further reduce its damage to permeability of dense carbonate rock after stimulation. In order to explore the effect of different carbon chain lengths of cationic surfactants on retarding properties of acid-rock reaction, the critical micelle concentration(Ccmc) and critical surface tension value(γcmc) of seven different carbon chain lengths of cationic surfactants are determined. The results indicate that Ccmc decreases significantly with the increasing of carbon chain length. The adsorption morphology of CnTAC(n = 8,10,12,14,16,18,22) species at the solid-solution interfaces is dominated by monolayer. On negatively charged calcite surface, a large number of cationic species RNH3+ can easily adsorb on abundant CO32− sites, which causes a significant increase of zeta potential for calcite. Meanwhile, the wettability of hydrophilic solid surface is modified from strongly hydrophilic to weakly hydrophilic after adsorption to control the surface rate of acid-rock reaction. The acid solution with a concentration of 1.02 × 10−2 mol/L C14TAC has the best retarded performance which the retardation rate is 71.01%. This research is helpful to understand the retarding performance of surfactant, improving the retarded acid system and the effect of carbonate reservoir stimulation.

Abstract

For a horizontal well cementing, successful displacement of the drilling mud from the annulus using the cement slurry were paramount for achieving zonal isolation. This study evaluated the displacement efficiency of drilling mud from the annulus by applying particle image velocimetry incorporating the development of a large-scale displacement efficiency device. Displacement efficiency measurements revealed that increasing the injection displacement and reducing the eccentricity cleans up residual drilling mud and significantly improves displacement efficiency. Slurry density significantly affected displacement efficiency, because high- and light-density slurries were shown to lead to low velocities and to increase the boundary layer thickness of the drilling mud. High injection displacement swirling flows were found to be more effective for reducing drilling mud adhesion to the casing and wellbore walls. The eccentric annuli tended to result in a narrow channel, which results significantly reducing the displacement efficiency owed to the laminar fluid flow.

Abstract

The preparation, staining, visualization and interpretation of histological images of tissue is well accepted as the gold standard process for the diagnosis of disease. These methods have a long history of development, and are used ubiquitously in pathology, despite being highly time- and labour-intensive. Here, we introduce a unique optical imaging platform and methodology for label-free multimodal multiphoton microscopy that uses a novel photonic-crystal fibre source to generate tailored chemical contrast based on programmable supercontinuum pulses. We demonstrate the collection of optical signatures of the tumour microenvironment, including evidence of mesoscopic biological organization, tumour cell migration and (lymph-) angiogenesis collected directly from fresh ex vivo mammary tissue. Acquisition of these optical signatures and other cellular or extracellular features, which are largely absent from histologically processed and stained tissue, combined with an adaptable platform for optical alignment-free programmable-contrast imaging, offers the potential to translate stain-free molecular histopathology into routine clinical use. A single-source multimodal nonlinear optical imaging system has been developed to probe different endogenous biomolecules. Rapid, stain-free imaging of fresh tissue specimens is possible with short turnaround times for disease diagnosis.

Abstract

We report on mode-selective single-beam coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy of gas-phase molecules. Binary phase shaping (BPS) is used to produce single-mode excitation of O2, N2, and CO2 vibrational modes in ambient air and gas-phase mixtures, with high-contrast rejection of off-resonant Raman modes and efficient nonresonant-background suppression. In particular, we demonstrate independent excitation of CO2 Fermi dyads at ∼1280 and ∼1380 cm−1 and apply BPS for high-contrast imaging of CO2 jet in ambient air. Thus, better understanding of how these malignant traits are controlled will be key to the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapies against this deadly disease. Tetraspanin CD151 and its associated α3β1 integrin have been implicated in facilitating tumor progression across multiple cancer types. How these adhesion molecules are involved in the progression of glioblastoma, however, remains largely unclear. Here, we examined an in-house tissue microarray-based cohort of 96 patient biopsies and TCGA dataset to evaluate the clinical significance of CD151 and α3β1 integrin. Functional and signaling analyses were also conducted to understand how these molecules promote the aggressiveness of glioblastoma at molecular and cellular levels. Results from our analyses showed that CD151 and α3 integrin were significantly elevated in glioblastomas at both protein and mRNA levels, and exhibited strong inverse correlation with patient survival ( p < 0.006). These adhesion molecules also formed tight protein complexes and synergized with EGF/EGFR to accelerate tumor cell motility and invasion. Furthermore, disruption of such complexes enhanced the survival of tumor-bearing mice in a xenograft model, and impaired activation of FAK and small GTPases. Also, knockdown- or pharmacological agent-based attenuation of EGFR, FAK or Graf (ARHGAP26)/small GTPase-mediated pathways markedly mitigated the aggressiveness of glioblastoma cells. Collectively, our findings provide clinical, molecular and cellular evidence of CD151-α3β1 integrin complexes as promising prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for glioblastoma.

Abstract

Integrins, a family of heterodimeric receptors for extracellular matrix, are promising therapeutic targets for ovarian cancer, particularly high-grade serous-type (HGSOC), as they drive tumor cell attachment, migration, proliferation and survival by activating focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-dependent signaling. Owing to the potential off-target effects of FAK inhibitors, disruption of the integrin signaling axis remains to be a challenge. Here, we tackled this barrier by screening for inhibitors being functionally cooperative with small-molecule VS-6063, a phase II FAK inhibitor. From this screening, JQ1, a potent inhibitor of Myc oncogenic network, emerged as the most robust collaborator. Treatment with a combination of VS-6063 and JQ1 synergistically caused an arrest of tumor cells at the G2/M phase and a decrease in the XIAP-linked cell survival. Our subsequent mechanistic analyses indicate that this functional cooperation was strongly associated with the concomitant disruption of activation or expression of FAK and c-Myc as well as their downstream signaling through the PI3K/Akt pathway. In line with these observations, we detected a strong co-amplification or upregulation at genomic or protein level for FAK and c-Myc in a large portion of primary tumors in the TCGA or a local HGSOC patient cohort. Taken together, our results suggest that the integrin–FAK signaling axis and c-Myc synergistically drive cell proliferation, survival and oncogenic potential in HGSOC. As such, our study provides key genetic, functional and signaling bases for the small-molecule-based co-targeting of these two distinct oncogenic drivers as a new line of targeted therapy against human ovarian cancer.

Abstract

We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. The only statistically significant (6.4 standard deviations) gamma-ray signal is found from MGRO J2031+41, with a flux consistent with the measurement by Milagro., 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe to study the cosmic ray propagation in the interstellar space and to investigate the existence of dark matter. Acting the Earth-Moon system as a magnetic spectrometer, paths of primary antiprotons are deflected in the opposite sense with respect to those of the protons in their way to the Earth. This effect allows, in principle, the search for antiparticles in the direction opposite to the observed deficit of cosmic rays due to the Moon (the so-called `Moon shadow'). The ARGO-YBJ experiment, located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l., 606 g/cm$^2$), is particularly effective in measuring the cosmic ray antimatter content via the observation of the cosmic rays shadowing effect due to: (1) good angular resolution, pointing accuracy and long-term stability; (2) low energy threshold; (3) real sensitivity to the geomagnetic field. Based on all the data recorded during the period from July 2006 through November 2009 and on a full Monte Carlo simulation, we searched for the existence of the shadow cast by antiprotons in the TeV energy region. No evidence of the existence of antiprotons is found in this energy region. Upper limits to the $\bar{p}/p$ flux ratio are set to 5 % at a median energy of 1.4 TeV and 6 % at 5 TeV with a confidence level of 90%. Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment detects extensive air showers in a wide energy range by means of a full-coverage detector which is in stable data taking in its full configuration since November 2007 at the YBJ International Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, People's Republic of China). In this paper the measurement of the light-component spectrum of primary cosmic rays in the energy region $(5\textdiv{}200)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ is reported. The method exploited to analyze the experimental data is based on a Bayesian procedure. The measured intensities of the light component are consistent with the recent CREAM results and higher than that obtained adding the proton and helium spectra reported by the RUNJOB experiment.

Abstract

""The charge readout of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) is implemented in the ARGO-YBJ experiment to measure the charged particle density of the shower front up to 10^4\\\/m^2, enabling the study of the primary cosmic rays with energies in the ''knee'' region. As the first time for RPCs being used this way, a telescope with RPCs and scintillation detectors is setup to calibrate the number of charged particles hitting a RPC versus its charge readout. Air shower particles are taken as the calibration beam. The telescope was tested at sea level and then moved to the ARGO-YBJ site for coincident operation with the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The charge readout shows good linearity with the particle density in the dynamic range (up to 200\\\/m^2).""

Abstract

We demonstrate a modular and versatile experimental setup that enables straightforward compression (and then shaping) of ultrashort laser pulses at the imaging plane of a two-photon microscope. A commercially available pulse shaper is used in conjunction with a commercially available broadband Ti:Sapphire oscillator to produce sub-8fs pulses at the focus of a high-numerical-aperture objective. Automated adaptive pulse compression, based on multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS), is verified in situ by shaper assisted interferometric autocorrelation. Two-photon excited fluorescence image of a mouse kidney slide is obtained to confirm microscopic sectioning capabilities.

Abstract

Label-free microscopy that has chemical contrast and high acquisition speeds up to video rates has recently been made possible using stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy. SRS imaging offers high sensitivity, but the spectral specificity of the original narrowband implementation is limited, making it difficult to distinguish chemical species with overlapping Raman bands. Here, we present a highly specific imaging method that allows mapping of a particular chemical species in the presence of interfering species, based on tailored multiplex excitation of its vibrational spectrum. This is implemented by spectral modulation of a broadband pump beam at a high frequency (>1 MHz), allowing detection of the SRS signal of the narrowband Stokes beam with high sensitivity. Using the scheme, we demonstrate quantification of cholesterol in the presence of lipids, and real-time three-dimensional spectral imaging of protein, stearic acid and oleic acid in live Caenorhabditis elegans.

Abstract

The sun blocks cosmic ray particles from outside the solar system, forming a detectable shadow in the sky map of cosmic rays detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. Because the cosmic ray particles are positive charged, the magnetic field between the sun and the earth deflects them from straight trajectories and results in a shift of the shadow from the true location of the sun. Here we show that the shift measures the intensity of the field which is transported by the solar wind from the sun to the earth., Comment: 6 papges,3 figures

Abstract

Detecting and monitoring emissions from flaring gamma-ray sources in the very-high-energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) band is a very important topic in gamma-ray astronomy. The ARGO-YBJ detector is characterized by a high duty cycle and a wide field of view. Therefore, it is particularly capable of detecting flares from extragalactic objects. Based on fast reconstruction and analysis, real-time monitoring of 33 selected VHE extragalactic sources is implemented. Flares exceeding a specific threshold are reported timely, hence enabling the follow-up observation of these objects using more sensitive detectors, such as Cherenkov telescopes. Abstract

A fast and automated approach to measuring two-photon fluorescence excitation (TPE) spectra of fluorophores with high resolution (∼2 nm ) by pulse shaping ultrabroad-bandwidth femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated. Selective excitation in the range of 675–990 nm was achieved by imposing a series of specially designed phase and amplitude masks on the excitation pulses using a pulse shaper. The method eliminates the need for laser tuning and is, thus, suitable for non-laser-expert use. The TPE spectrum of Fluorescein was compared with independent measurements and the spectra of the pH-sensitive dye 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (HPTS) in acidic and basic environments were measured for the first time using this approach.

We report precise characterization and compensation of high-order phase distortions of a supercontinuum generated by ultrafast fiber lasers. By using multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS) technique, the pulses are compressed to 12.8 fs (within 0.1% of the transform-limited value) automatically in less than thirty seconds.

Abstract

Self phase modulation in hollow waveguide filled with noble gases have been successfully used to produce ultra-broad bandwidths [1]. The intense spectral phase distortions produced by self phase modulation have previously been compensated by prism pairs and adaptive pulse shaping [2]. Here we demonstrate the generation of 4.8 fs, 200 µJ intense laser pulses by multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS) [3, 4].

Abstract

The proton-air cross section in the energy range 1-100 TeV has been measured by the ARGO-YBJ cosmic ray experiment. The analysis is based on the flux attenuation for different atmospheric depths (i.e. zenith angles) and exploits the detector capabilities of selecting the shower development stage by means of hit multiplicity, density and lateral profile measurements at ground. The effects of shower fluctuations, the contribution of heavier primaries and the uncertainties of the hadronic interaction models, have been taken into account. The results have been used to estimate the total proton-proton cross section at center of mass energies between 70 and 500 GeV, where no accelerator data are currently available., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ (Astrophysical Radiation Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing) experiment is designed for very high energy $\gamma$-astronomy and cosmic ray researches. Due to the full coverage of a large area ($5600 m^2$) with resistive plate chambers at a very high altitude (4300 m a.s.l.), the ARGO-YBJ detector is used to search for transient phenomena, such as Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Because the ARGO-YBJ detector has a large field of view ($\sim$2 sr) and is operated with a high duty cycle ($>$90%), it is well suited for GRB surveying and can be operated in searches for high energy GRBs following alarms set by satellite-borne observations at lower energies. In this paper, the sensitivity of the ARGO-YBJ detector for GRB detection is estimated. Abstract

The detection of chemicals from safe distances is vital in environments with potentially hazardous or explosive threats, where high sensitivity and fast detection speed are needed. Here we demonstrate standoff detection of several solids, liquids, and gases with single-beam coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. This approach utilizes a phase coherent ultrabroad-bandwidth femtosecond laser to probe the fundamental vibrations that constitute a molecule's fingerprint. Characteristic Raman lines for several chemicals are successfully obtained from arms-length and 12 m standoff distances. The sensitivity and speed of this approach are also demonstrated.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is mainly devoted to search for astronomical gamma sources. The arrival direction of air showers is reconstructed thanks to the times measured by the pixels of the detector. Therefore, the timing calibration of the detector pixels is crucial in order to get the best angular resolution and pointing accuracy. Because of the large number of pixels a hardware timing calibration is practically impossible. Therefore an off-line software calibration has been adopted. The asynchronous transmission (encoding and decoding) of 64-bit information using binary spectral phase shaping is demonstrated. The accurate introduction and retrieval of the binary information is possible by using multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS) to measure and correct the spectral phase distortions of the laser and the transmission media. Experimental demonstration is achieved using a sub-6 fs Ti:Sapphire laser with 2.12-GHz repetition rate and an adaptive phase control system.

Abstract

We present an intuitive pulse characterization method that provides an accurate and direct measurement of the spectral phase of ultrashort laser pulses. The method requires the successive imposition of a set of quadratic spectral phase functions on the pulses while recording the corresponding nonlinear spectra. The second-derivative of the unknown spectral phase can be directly visualized and extracted from the experimental 2D contour plot, without any inversion algorithm or mathematical manipulation.

Abstract

We report the detection of characteristic Raman lines for several chemicals using a single-beam coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) technique from a 12 meter standoff distance. Single laser shot spectra are obtained with sufficient signal to noise ratio to allow molecular identification. Background and spectroscopic discrimination are achieved through binary phase pulse shaping for optimal excitation of a single vibrational mode. These results provide a promising approach to standoff detection of chemicals, hazardous contaminants, and explosives.

The fundamental difficulty of achieving a coherently enhanced sensing method at standoff distances greater than 10 meters has been solved by single-beam coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and by actively measuring and eliminating chromatic dispersion experienced by the broad-bandwidth (100 nm) laser pulses. Characteristic Raman spectra for several chemicals in gas, liquid, and solid states, are successfully obtained from a 12 meter standoff distance. The results obtained indicate this is a promising approach to standoff detection of chemicals, hazardous contaminations, and explosives.

Abstract

Characterization and pulse shaping of octave spanning femtosecond lasers poses a significant challenge. We have constructed a grating-based pulse shaper for an ultra-broad-bandwidth (620-1020 nm)femtosecond laser, and used it to compensate the phase distortions of the laser, spatial-light modulator and optics within 0.1 rad accuracy accross the entire bandwidth using Multiphoton Intrapulse Interference Phase Scan (MIIPS) without a precompressor. The compensated transform limited pulses generated a second harmonic spectrum with a 12,260 cm(-1) spectral width. Binary phase modulation was introduced by this pulse shaping system to demonstrate high resolution control of the second harmonic generation spectrum.

We demonstrate high-resolution high-contrast nonlinear optical spectroscopy based on phase-modulated ultrashort pulses. The problem of causing selective nonlinear optical excitation at one frequency while minimizing background is framed in terms of low autocorrelation binary sequences. We investigate phase functions with up to 608-bit resolution for their ability to induce two-photon excitation or stimulated Raman scattering, and find the highest theoretical and experimental signal-to-noise ratios yet reported. We confirm our findings by measuring experimental two-photon excitation spectra.

Abstract

A number of nonlinear imaging modalities, such as two-photon excitation and second harmonic generation, have gained popularity during the last decade. These, and related methods, have in common the use of a femtosecond laser in the near infrared, with the short pulse duration making the nonlinear excitation highly efficient. Efforts toward the use of pulses with pulse duration at or below 10 fs, however, have been a great challenge, in part due to the fact that shorter pulses have been found to cause greater sample damage. Here we provide a brief review of the MIIPS method for correction of phase distortions introduced by high numerical aperture objectives and the introduction of simple phase functions capable of preventing three-photon induced damage, reducing autofluorescence, and providing selective probe excitation.

Abstract

Accurate and reproducible research in the field of femtochemistry requires both the measurement and then subsequent correction of phase distortions inherent in femtosecond laser pulses. Spectral phase distortions, which are introduced by the transmission of an ultrashort laser pulse through a lens, optical fiber, or microscope objective, or by interaction with an optical surface such as a dielectric mirror, have a negative effect both on the ability to carry out and the ability to reproduce experiments in which pulse duration is of importance, or nonlinear optical processes are utilized. This chapter presents a quantitative study on the ability of multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS) to both characterize phase distortions with better precision and reproducibility than other established methods, and to correct them to obtain transform-limited pulses. The MIIPS method provides accurate phase retrieval and phase correction at the sample. These are important functions for reproducible femtosecond laser pulse experiments, especially those involving nonlinear optics. The MIIPS setup can also be used to deliver accurate synthetic wavefunctions at the sample as would be required for laser control experiments.

Abstract

""The ARGO-YBJ experiment at YangBaJing in Tibet (4300m a.s.l.) has been taking data with its full layout since October 2007. Here we present a few significant results obtained in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of gamma-ray emission from point-like sources (Crab Nebula, MRK 421), on the preliminary limit on the antiproton\\\/proton flux ratio, on the large-scale cosmic-ray anisotropy and on the proton-air cross-section. The performance of the detector is also discussed, and the perspectives of the experiment are outlined.""
