Biomedical graduate research trainees are increasingly pursuing careers beyond academia in response to limited academic positions relative to the trainee population. Biomedical research training must therefore evolve alongside the shifting career landscape by circumventing a "hidden curriculum" to help trainees develop skills complementary to existing graduate training. Here, we describe an approach to implement "soft skills" training for a diverse population of biomedical graduate research trainees from the Duke University BioCoRE program. Qualitative data from the BioCoRE annual program survey revealed that trainees felt they were not meeting crucial benchmarks in areas often absent from graduate training. Responses to open-ended survey questions overwhelmingly focused on "soft skills," including communication, conflict resolution, and time management. Using these themes as a guide, the BioCoRE Program Director and graduate student-led Professional Development Committee collaborated to design a monthly workshop series, enlisting support from human resources personnel, undergraduate student affairs offices, and senior graduate trainees with relevant expertise. The year-long workshop series covered a range of topics: personal branding, science communication, scientific storytelling, conflict resolution, time management, and job market preparation. Based on survey data, the inaugural series was well-received and cited as highly effective by attendees. Survey dissemination and analysis will continue in subsequent years to address new topics and anticipate emerging themes in the shifting career development landscape. Implementation of this workshop series demonstrates the ability of graduate programs to enhance trainee soft skills by leveraging the expertise of internal and local professional personnel. Microbes are ubiquitous in groundwater systems, and they play an important role in the redox state of groundwater and especially on the fate of organic contaminants. In this context, numerical simulations that couple microbial processes to reactive transport models are becoming more popular. In the present work, we revisit the mathematical ground of microbial redox reactions and perform a benchmark analysis of the simulation of aerobic benzene degradation in a shallow and oxidizing aquifer. Numerical results indicate that the two codes tested (one using the finite elements approach and the other using the finite differences approach) lead to very similar results. In addition, the coupling of heterogeneous geochemical reactions to the benchmarked example problem provides a solid basis for the understanding of the redox reactions and the changes on the carbon system triggered by the aerobic degradation of benzene. Dissolved oxygen (DO) left in the voids of buffer and backfill materials of a deep geological high level radioactive waste (HLW) repository could cause canister corrosion. Available data from laboratory and in situ experiments indicate that microbes play a substantial role in controlling redox conditions near a HLW repository. This paper presents the application of a coupled hydro-bio-geochemical model to evaluate geochemical and microbial consumption of DO in bentonite porewater after backfilling of a HLW repository designed according to the Swedish reference concept. In addition to geochemical reactions, the model accounts for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) respiration and methane oxidation. Parameters for microbial processes were derived from calibration of the REX in situ experiment carried out at the Äspö underground laboratory. The role of geochemical and microbial processes in consuming DO is evaluated for several scenarios. Numerical results show that both geochemical and microbial processes are relevant for DO consumption. However, the time needed to consume the DO trapped in the bentonite buffer decreases dramatically from several hundreds of years when only geochemical processes are considered to a few weeks when both geochemical reactions and microbially-mediated DOC respiration and methane oxidation are taken into account simultaneously.
