Background: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a popular technique which can be used to track longitudinal changes in body composition. However, precision of the technique has been questioned, especially among athletic populations where small but meaningful changes are often observed. Guidelines exist which attempt to optimize precision of the technique but fail to account for potentially important variables. Standardization of dietary intake and physical activity in the 24 hr prior to assessment has been proposed as an approach to minimizing the error of impedance-derived estimates of body composition. Methods: Eighteen recreational athletes, male (n = 10) and female (n = 8), underwent two consecutive BIA tests to quantify within-day error, and a third test (the day before or after) to quantify between-day error. All food and fluid intake plus physical activity from the 24 hr prior to the first BIA scan was replicated during the following 24 hr. Precision error was calculated as the root mean square standard deviation, percentage coefficient of variation, and least significant change. Results: There were no significant differences in precision error of within- and between-day fat-free mass, fat mass, and total body water. Differences in precision error of fat-free mass and total body water, but not fat mass, were less than the smallest effect size of interest. Conclusion: The 24-hr standardization of dietary intake and physical activity may be an effective approach to minimizing precision error associated with BIA. The role of torso computed tomography (CT) in evaluating body composition has been unexplored. This study assessed the potential of low-dose torso CT from positron emission tomography (PET)/CT for analyzing body composition and its relation to muscle strength. We retrospectively recruited 384 healthy Korean adults (231 men, 153 women) who underwent torso 18F-FDG PET/CT, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and muscle strength tests (handgrip strength [HGS] and knee extension strength [KES]). CT images were segmented into three compartments: torso volumetric, abdominal volumetric, and abdominal areal. Muscle amounts from each compartment were indexed to height (m2). BIA and HGS served as reference standards, with correlation coefficients (r) calculated. Torso muscle volumetric index (TorsoMVI) had the strongest correlations with BIA-derived values (r = 0.80 for men; r = 0.73 for women), surpassing those from the abdominal compartments. TorsoMVI was also correlated significantly with HGS (r = 0.39, p < 0.01) and differentiated between normal and possible sarcopenia in men (n = 225, 5960 ± 785 cm3/m2 vs. n = 6, 5210 ± 487 cm3/m2, p = 0.02). In women, KES correlated more strongly with muscle parameters than HGS. Despite gender-specific variations, torso CT-derived parameters show promise for evaluating body composition and sarcopenia. Background: Muscle mass and phase angle (PhA) can be measured using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Osteoarthritis of the hip (OAhip) causes decreased muscle mass and PhA in the deformed lower limb. However, previous studies have not accounted for the influence of sex, and thus, the relationship between muscle mass, PhA, and motor function remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between PhA, an index of muscle mass and quality measured using BIA, and motor function during gait and standing in female patients with OAhip. Methods: Muscle mass and PhA of patients with OAhip were measured using BIA. Motor function was evaluated using the Timed Up and Go test, ground reaction/weight, rate of force development/weight, and load ratio between the osteoarthritic (OA) and contralateral sides when standing up. The difference between the OA side and the contralateral lower limb was tested to clarify the characteristics of the deformed lower limb. The relationship between each motor function was determined using a partial correlation coefficient with age as a control variable and multiple regression analysis with each motor function as the dependent variable and age, OA-side muscle mass/body weight ratio, and PhA as independent variables. Results: This study involved 60 patients with OAhip (age 65.6 ± 7.6 years, height 154.2 ± 6.0 cm, weight 56.8 ± 10.5 kg) scheduled for unilateral total hip arthroplasty. Muscle mass, PhA, and lower limb load ratio were significantly decreased in the lower limbs on the OA side. Furthermore, using a partial correlation coefficient with age as a control variable, PhA showed significant correlations with motor functions related to standing up and walking, and multiple regression analysis revealed that PhA was independently related to each motor function. Introduction: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema experience malnutrition and pulmonary cachexia. Endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) with endobronchial valves has not only improved lung function, exercise capacity, and quality of life but also influenced body weight. Only a few data are available on body composition changes after ELVR. Methods: This single-center prospective study of patients with advanced COPD investigates body composition before and after endoscopic valve treatment using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The following parameters were evaluated in addition to clinical data and routine tests: body weight, body mass index (BMI), basal metabolic rate, total body water, body fat, cell percentage, phase angle, intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), extracellular mass (ECM), body cell mass (BCM), lean body mass (ECM + BCM), and fat-free mass index. Results: A total of 23 patients (mean emphysema index 37.2 ± 7.5%, BMI 23.4 ± 4.3 kg/m2) experienced improvements in lung function and exercise capacity with ELVR. Complete lobar atelectasis was achieved in 39.1% of participants. A non-statistically significant increase in body weight and BMI was observed after ELVR (p = 0.111 and p = 0.102). BIA measurement revealed a worsening of phase angle, cell percentage and ECM/BCM and thus of body composition, but without statistical significance. This is mainly due to a statistically significant increase in ECM, ECW, and ICW (all p < 0.001). Purpose: Alpine ski racing is a complex sport where no single factor can exclusively account for performance. We assessed body composition, using bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), and our purpose was to study its influence on the strength and power profile of young alpine skiers. Methods: Anthropometric measurements and advanced BIVA parameters were recorded on eighteen alpine ski racers (6 females/12 males; 17.0 ± 1.3 years; 172.2 ± 9.3 cm; 68.5 ± 9.8 kg). Dynamic force and power were assessed using countermovement jumps (CMJ), while maximal isometric strength was evaluated for hip flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements. Stepwise regression models examined the relationship between BIVA-derived parameters and strength/power variables. Results: Body cellular mass (BCM) positively related to jump height (p =.021, R2 = 74%), jump momentum (p <.001, R2 = 89%), reactive strength index modified (p =.026, R2 = 75%) and peak concentric power (p <.001, R2 = 82%), while intracellular water (ICW) related to peak eccentric (p <.001, R2 = 76%) and concentric force (p <.001, R2 = 77%) as well as to concentric rate of force development together with the phase angle (PhA) (p =.008, R2 = 79% and R2 = 0.015). Regarding isometric assessment, ICW was a significant predictor for all four movement directions, and PhA contributed to hip adduction strength. Precise assessment of postoperative volume status is important to administrate optimal fluid management. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) which measures the body composition using electric character. Extracellular water (ECW) ratio by BIA represented as the ratio of ECW to total body water (TBW) and is known to reflect the hydration status. Based on this, we aimed to determine whether aggressive fluid control using ECW ratio could improve clinical outcomes through a single blind, randomized controlled trial. From November 2021 to December 2022, intensive care unit (ICU) patients admitted after surgery were randomly assigned to an intervention group or a control group whether postoperative fluid management was controlled via BIA. Among patients in the intervention group, dehydrated patients received a bolus infusion with crystalloid fluid whereas diuretics were administrated to overhydrated patients until the value of ECW ratio fell within its normal setting range (0.390–0.406). Contrarily, BIA was performed once a day for the control group. Patients in the control group received traditional fluid treatment regardless of BIA results. Primary outcome was in-hospital mortality in two groups. The secondary outcomes were postoperative morbidities, 28-day mortality. 77 patients of the intervention group and 90 patients of the control group were finally analyzed. The in-hospital mortality (0 in intervention, 4.4% in control, p = 0.125) and 28-day mortality (1.3% in intervention, 14.4% in control, p = 0.002) showed lower incidence in the intervention group than in the control group. In multivariate analysis, the overhydrated status whose ECW ratio exceeding 0.406 [odds ratio (OR): 2.731, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.001–7.663, p = 0.049] and high capillary leak index (CLI) value at ICU admission (OR: 1.024, 95% CI: 1.008–1.039, p = 0.002) were risk factors of postoperative morbidities. Regarding the 28-day mortality, high CLI value (OR: 1.025, 95% CI: 1.002–1.050, p = 0.037) and traditional strategy without BIA monitoring (OR: 9.903, 95% CI: 1.095–89.566, p = 0.041) were the significant predisposing factors. Our results revealed the rigorous fluid treatment with volume control based on ECW ratio by BIA failed to achieve significant improvement in in-hospital mortality, but it could reduce 28-day mortality of ICU patients. Monitoring of ECW ratio may help establish optimal fluid treatment strategies for postoperative ICU patients who are susceptible to fluid imbalances with fluid overload. Background: Body composition (BC) techniques, including bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIVA), nutritional ultrasound® (NU), and computed tomography (CT), can detect nutritional diagnoses such as sarcopenia (Sc). Sc in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with greater severity and lower survival. Our aim was to explore the correlation of BIVA, NU and functional parameters with BC at T12 level CT scans in patients with IPF but also its relationship with degree of Sc, malnutrition and mortality. Methods: This bicentric cross-sectional study included 60 IPF patients (85.2% male, 70.9 ± 7.8 years). Morphofunctional assessment (MFA) techniques included BIVA, NU, CT at T12 level (T12-CT), handgrip strength, and timed up and go. CT data were obtained using FocusedON®. Statistical analysis was conducted using JAMOVI version 2.3.22 to determine the cutoff points for Sc in T12-CT and to analyze correlations with other MFA techniques. Results: the cutoff for muscle area in T12-CT was ≤77.44 cm2 (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.734, sensitivity = 41.7%, specificity = 100%). The skeletal muscle index (SMI_T12CT) cutoff was ≤24.5 cm2/m2 (AUC = 0.689, sensitivity = 66.7%, specificity = 66.7%). Low SMI_T12CT exhibited significantly reduced median survival and higher risk of mortality compared to those with normal muscle mass (SMI cut off ≥ 28.8 cm/m2). SMI_T12CT was highly correlated with body cell mass from BIVA (r = 0.681) and rectus femoris cross-sectional area (RF-CSA) from NU (r = 0.599). Cronbach's α for muscle parameters across different MFA techniques and CT was 0.735, confirming their validity for evaluating muscle composition. Conclusions: T12-CT scan is a reliable technique for measuring low muscle mass in patients with IPF, specifically when the L3 vertebrae are not captured. Background: Oral fluid intake decreases in advanced cancer in the dying phase of illness. There is inadequate evidence to support the assessment, and management, of hydration in the dying. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a body composition assessment tool. BIA has the potential to inform clinal management in advanced cancer, by examining the relationships between hydration status and clinical variables. Aim: BIA was used to determine the association between hydration status, symptoms, clinical signs, quality-of-life and survival in advanced cancer, including those who are dying (i.e. in the last week of life). Materials and methods: We conducted a prospective observational study of people with advanced cancer in three centres. Advance consent methodology was used to conduct hydration assessments in the dying. Total body water was estimated using the BIA Impedance index (Height – H (m)2 /Resistance – R (Ohms)). Backward regression was used to identify factors (physical signs, symptoms, quality of life) that predicted H2/R. Participants in the last 7 days of life were further assessed with BIA to assess hydration changes, and its relationship with clinical outcomes. Results: One hundred and twenty-five people participated (males n = 74 (59.2%), females, n = 51 (40.8%)). We used backward regression analysis to describe a statistical model to predict hydration status in advanced cancer. The model demonstrated that 'less hydration' (lower H2/R) was associated with female sex (Beta = -0.39, p < 0.001), increased appetite (Beta = -0.12, p = 0.09), increased dehydration assessment scale score (dry mouth, dry axilla, sunken eyes - Beta = -0.19, p = 0.006), and increased breathlessness (Beta = -0.15, p = 0.03). 'More hydration' (higher H2/R) was associated with oedema (Beta = 0.49, p < 0.001). In dying participants (n = 18, 14.4%), hydration status (H2/R) was not significantly different compared to their baseline measurements (n = 18, M = 49.6, SD = 16.0 vs. M = 51.0, SD = 12.1; t(17) = 0.64, p = 0.53) and was not significantly associated with agitation (rs = -0.85, p = 0.74), pain (rs = 0.31, p = 0.23) or respiratory tract secretions (rs = -0.34, p = 0.19). Conclusions: This is the first study to use bioimpedance to report a model (using clinical factors) to predict hydration status in advanced cancer. Our data demonstrates the feasibility of using an advance consent method to conduct research in dying people. This method can potentially improve the evidence base (and hence, quality of care) for the dying. Future BIA research can involve hydration assessment of cancers (according to type and stage) and associated variables (e.g., stage of illness, ethnicity and gender). Further work can use BIA to identify clinically relevant outcomes for hydration studies and establish a core outcome set to evaluate how hydration affects symptoms and quality-of-life in cancer. To cross-validate bioelectrical impedance devices for the determination of body fat percentage (BF%) in firefighters. Twenty-eight structural firefighters were evaluated (female, n = 2; male, n = 26 [mean ± SD] age: 38.2 ± 8.3 years; height: 180.2 ± 7.5 cm; body mass: 86.7 ± 20.8 kg; body mass index: 25.8 ± 7.8 kg⋅m-2) using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) hand-to-foot device, and single- frequency BIA foot scale (F2FBIA), and a single-frequency handheld BIA device (HHBIA). Dual X-ray absorptiometry served as the criterion. Validity metrics were examined to establish each method's performance. Body fat % values produced by MFBIA (r = 0.913), F2FBIA (r = 0.695), and HHBIA (r = 0.876) were strongly associated (p < 0.001) with criterion BF% measures. However, MFBIA, F2FBIA, and HHBIA all significantly (p < 0.001) underestimated BF% when compared with the criterion measure. Constant error ranged between 4.0 and 5.5% across all BIA devices. Despite strong associations between the BIA devices included in the current study and the criterion measure, all BIA devices underestimated BF%, which resulted in an overestimation of fat-free mass. Background: The prevalence of pre-frailty is notably high among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Pre-frailty, an early and reversible condition between non-frailty and frailty, can lead to adverse outcomes such as increased unplanned hospital admissions and a higher risk of other chronic diseases. Early identification and intervention of pre-frailty in MHD patients are crucial. This study aimed to establish a simple and effective model for screening and identifying MHD patients at high risk of pre-frailty by using 50 kHz-Whole Body Phase Angle (PhA) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), hand grip strength (HGS), the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST), and laboratory parameters, with a specific focus on gender differences. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2023 at the Wenjiang Hemodialysis Center in the Department of Nephrology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. A total of 244 MHD patients, including 130 males and 114 females, were enrolled, comprising 128 non-frail and 116 pre-frail individuals. Data were collected prospectively, including demographic information, physical measurements, and laboratory test results. All participants provided informed consent before enrollment. The FRAIL scale (FS) was used to assess pre-frailty in MHD patients. Grip strength was measured using an electronic grip strength tester, physical function was assessed using the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test, and whole-body phase angle was measured using the InBody S10 device. Results: A total of 244 MHD patients with a mean age of 53.75 ± 0.90 years were enrolled, including 130 males with a mean age of 54.12 ± 1.26 years and 114 females with a mean age of 53.32 ± 1.29 years. ROC curve analysis showed that in male patients, the AUC of PhA for predicting pre-frailty was 0.919, with a sensitivity of 94.5% and specificity of 91.3%, and a cutoff value of 6.05°; in female patients, the AUC of PhA was 0.870, with a sensitivity of 70.5% and specificity of 90.6%, and a cutoff value of 5.25°. The AUC of FTSST for screening pre-frailty in male patients was 0.827, with a sensitivity of 62.3% and specificity of 96.2%, and a cutoff value of 12.95 s; in female patients, the AUC of FTSST was 0.784, with a sensitivity of 67.3% and specificity of 84.0%, and a cutoff value of 12.95 s. Additionally, in male patients, the combination of PhA and FTSST resulted in an AUC of 0.930, with a sensitivity of 96.4% and specificity of 81.3%; in female patients, the AUC was 0.911, with a sensitivity of 78.7% and specificity of 92.5%. Conclusion: PhA measured by BIA, in combination with the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test, serves as an effective screening tool and predictor of pre-frailty in MHD patients. The combination of PhA and FTSST shows enhanced diagnostic value in female patients, while PhA alone is sufficient for predicting pre-frailty in male patients. The aim of our study is to determine if there is an association between phase angle obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and mortality in older patients with fragility hip fractures. A prospective study of patients over 65 years old and hospitalized with a diagnosis of hip fracture was conducted. BIA was performed 24 to 48 h after surgery. Mortality was recorded, and the optimal phase angle cut-off value for predicting mortality was determined by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. A total of 262 patients were included. Of the patients studied, 10 (3.8%), 21 (8%), 39 (14.9%) and 53 (20.2%) died at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery, respectively. The phase angle cut-off for mortality at 12 months was 4.05° in women and 4.65° in men. A total of 94 patients (35.9%) were considered to have a low phase angle. After adjustment for possible confounders, mortality in patients with a low phase angle was 5.1 times higher at 1 month, 3.1 times higher at 3 months, 2.9 times higher at 6 months, and 2.8 times higher at 12 months. Phase angle is associated with prognosis in patients admitted for hip fracture regardless of age and comorbidities and can be positioned as a prognostic tool for mortality at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Body mass, body mass index (BMI), and body composition components are essential for health and longevity. Considering the influence of demographic factors on body composition, there is a need for tailored reference values based on age-, sex-, and geography. We aimed to construct a comprehensive reference material on body composition in healthy Norwegian adults. In this cross-sectional study, we estimated age- and sex-specific reference values for body-, fat-, and muscle mass variables using multi-frequency bioelectrial impedance analysis (such as body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass and visceral fat area) in 22,191 healthy adults aged 20–99 years participating in the Trøndelag Health Study 4 (HUNT4). We calculated the fat mass and skeletal muscle mass index as the total fat and muscle mass relative to height squared and used general linear models to explore the associations between physical activity (PA), BMI, and age. With a BMI (kg/m2) of 25.4 (SD 5.1) and 26.0 (4.5) for women and men, respectively, the youngest age group (20–39 yrs) had a lower BMI compared to their counterparts aged 40–59 years (26.3 [4.5] and 27.5 [3.8]) and ≥ 60 years (25.7 [4.1] and 26.5 [3.4]), respectively. Those aged 20–39 years also had the lowest values for the different body fat variables measured. Fat mass index (kg/m2) was 8.41 (4.00) and 5.81 (3.29) for women and men aged 20–39 years, respectively, compared to 9.25 (3.21) and 6.86 (2.46) for those aged ≥60 years. The oldest age group had the lowest values for the various muscle mass variables; women and men aged 60+ years had a skeletal muscle mass index (kg/m2) of 8.91 (0.85) and 10.96 (1.00), respectively. Corresponding values for those aged 20–39 years were 9.33 (0.97) and 11.49 (1.15). For all age groups and both sexes, regular physical activity was associated with lower levels of fat mass, whereas the association between muscle mass and PAwas less conclusive. When using body fat percentage as an obesity measure, we observed a much higher obesity prevalence (41.2%) in the study population compared to BMI (17.3%). Our study offers a comprehensive reference for body composition among healthy adults in Norway, aiding the identification of abnormal fat and muscle mass values across age groups. We also highlight that BMI often misclassifies individuals with adiposity levels in the overweight or obese category as lean. In the present study, we examined the inter-relationships between body water balance, nutritional risk, sarcopenia, and outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in patients who were living independently. We defined abnormal body water balance as overhydration, with an extracellular fluid/total body water ratio > 0.390. A geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) < 98 was considered low GNRI. Sarcopenia was defined according to the 2019 Asian Working Group for sarcopenia criteria. Poor outcome was defined as a modified Rankin scale (mRS) score ≥ 3 at discharge. Among 111 eligible patients (40 females, median age: 77 years), 43 had a poor prognosis, 31 exhibited overhydration, 25 had low GNRI, and 44 experienced sarcopenia. Patients with poor outcomes had significantly higher National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, which were significantly more common with overhydration, low GNRI, and sarcopenia (p < 0.001 for all). Concomitant overhydration, low GNRI, and sarcopenia were associated with poorer outcomes. In multivariate analysis, overhydration [odds ratio (OR) 5.504, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.717–17.648; p = 0.004], age (OR 1.062, 95%CI 1.010–1.117; p = 0.020), and NIHSS score (OR 1.790, 95%CI 1.307–2.451; p < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for poor outcome. The results indicated that the combination of overhydration, low GNRI, and sarcopenia predict poor outcomes following AIS. Overhydration was particularly associated with poor outcomes. The relationship between each motor function was determined using a partial correlation coefficient with age as a control variable and multiple regression analysis with each motor function as the dependent variable and age, OA-side muscle mass/body weight ratio, and PhA as independent variables. Results This study involved 60 patients with OAhip (age 65.6 ± 7.6 years, height 154.2 ± 6.0 cm, weight 56.8 ± 10.5 kg) scheduled for unilateral total hip arthroplasty. Muscle mass, PhA, and lower limb load ratio were significantly decreased in the lower limbs on the OA side. Furthermore, using a partial correlation coefficient with age as a control variable, PhA showed significant correlations with motor functions related to standing up and walking, and multiple regression analysis revealed that PhA was independently related to each motor function. Conclusions Evaluation and interventions that consider muscle quality rather than muscle mass are important.

Abstract Background Oral fluid intake decreases in advanced cancer in the dying phase of illness. There is inadequate evidence to support the assessment, and management, of hydration in the dying. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a body composition assessment tool. BIA has the potential to inform clinal management in advanced cancer, by examining the relationships between hydration status and clinical variables. Aim BIA was used to determine the association between hydration status, symptoms, clinical signs, quality-of-life and survival in advanced cancer, including those who are dying (i.e. in the last week of life). Materials and methods We conducted a prospective observational study of people with advanced cancer in three centres. Advance consent methodology was used to conduct hydration assessments in the dying. Total body water was estimated using the BIA Impedance index (Height – H (m)2 /Resistance – R (Ohms)). Backward regression was used to identify factors (physical signs, symptoms, quality of life) that predicted H2/R. Participants in the last 7 days of life were further assessed with BIA to assess hydration changes, and its relationship with clinical outcomes. Abstract Background The prevalence of pre-frailty is notably high among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Pre-frailty, an early and reversible condition between non-frailty and frailty, can lead to adverse outcomes such as increased unplanned hospital admissions and a higher risk of other chronic diseases. Early identification and intervention of pre-frailty in MHD patients are crucial. This study aimed to establish a simple and effective model for screening and identifying MHD patients at high risk of pre-frailty by using 50 kHz-Whole Body Phase Angle (PhA) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), hand grip strength (HGS), the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST), and laboratory parameters, with a specific focus on gender differences. Methods This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2023 at the Wenjiang Hemodialysis Center in the Department of Nephrology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. A total of 244 MHD patients, including 130 males and 114 females, were enrolled, comprising 128 non-frail and 116 pre-frail individuals. Data were collected prospectively, including demographic information, physical measurements, and laboratory test results. All participants provided informed consent before enrollment. The FRAIL scale (FS) was used to assess pre-frailty in MHD patients. Grip strength was measured using an electronic grip strength tester, physical function was assessed using the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test, and whole-body phase angle was measured using the InBody S10 device. Results A total of 244 MHD patients with a mean age of 53.75 ± 0.90 years were enrolled, including 130 males with a mean age of 54.12 ± 1.26 years and 114 females with a mean age of 53.32 ± 1.29 years. ROC curve analysis showed that in male patients, the AUC of PhA for predicting pre-frailty was 0.919, with a sensitivity of 94.5% and specificity of 91.3%, and a cutoff value of 6.05°; in female patients, the AUC of PhA was 0.870, with a sensitivity of 70.5% and specificity of 90.6%, and a cutoff value of 5.25°. The AUC of FTSST for screening pre-frailty in male patients was 0.827, with a sensitivity of 62.3% and specificity of 96.2%, and a cutoff value of 12.95 s; in female patients, the AUC of FTSST was 0.784, with a sensitivity of 67.3% and specificity of 84.0%, and a cutoff value of 12.95 s. Additionally, in male patients, the combination of PhA and FTSST resulted in an AUC of 0.930, with a sensitivity of 96.4% and specificity of 81.3%; in female patients, the AUC was 0.911, with a sensitivity of 78.7% and specificity of 92.5%. Conclusion PhA measured by BIA, in combination with the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test, serves as an effective screening tool and predictor of pre-frailty in MHD patients. The combination of PhA and FTSST shows enhanced diagnostic value in female patients, while PhA alone is sufficient for predicting pre-frailty in male patients. Summary: Background: An optimal nutritional strategy has not been established for the patients with muscle atrophy. Moreover, acute critical illness causes drastic changes in skeletal muscles, complicating nutritional treatment. Here, we present a case of myotonic dystrophy suffered acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aimed to describe the changes in skeletal muscle as well as nutrition therapy. Methods: A female in her 30s with myotonic dystrophy received mechanical ventilation for severe ARDS. Her respiratory status improved by day 15 of admission, but she developed severe weakness. We evaluated the cross-sectional area and mean computed tomography (CT) value of the psoas muscle at the level of the third lumber vertebra using abdominal CT scans performed on days 1 and 15. We also performed bioelectrical impedance analyses (BIA) on days 37 and 44. The patient received enteral nutrition from day 4, which was increased to administer 21.1 kcal/kg of energy and 1.05 g/kg of protein per day as the maintenance dose. Results: The cross-sectional area remarkably decreased from 8.59 cm2 on day 1–7.39 cm2 on day 15. The CT values decreased from 47.2 HU to 13.6 HU. BIA performed during the recovery phase showed impaired muscle quality (phase angle of 2.6 or 2.9°). The muscle volume was preserved with maintenance doses of enteral nutrition. Conclusion: Acute muscle volume loss and deteriorating muscle quality was observed during acute critical illness in a patient with myotonic dystrophy. The patient received a standard dose of energy and protein, and the muscle volume was preserved.

Summary: Objective: Sarcopenia, characterized by the loss of muscle mass and function, is prevalent in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Early diagnosis is crucial, but universal screening is often hindered by the complexity of diagnostic algorithms and limited clinical resources. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the ability of bioelectrical impedance analysis-derived phase angle (PhA), a convenient and cost-effective technique, in detecting sarcopenia among PD patients. Methods: A single-center cross-sectional study was conducted on 130 multi-ethnic PD patients in Malaysia. Sarcopenia was assessed using Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 diagnostic algorithm. PhA was measured by a multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis device at 50kHz. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine predictability of PhA on sarcopenia. Receiver operating characteristics analysis was used to evaluate the discriminative performance of PhA in detecting sarcopenia. Optimal gender-specific PhA cut-off values for sarcopenia detection were determined based on desired sensitivity and specificity. Results: Sarcopenia was identified in 25.4% of the PD patients. Plasma volume (PV) calculated from hematocrit and body weight has applications in cardiovascular disease. The current study investigated the validity of the calculated PV for predicting volume overload and its prognostic utility in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Fifty-four HD patients were prospectively enrolled, and their actual PV (aPV) and relative PV status (PVS) were calculated. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) with assessment of and total body water (TBW), intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), and overhydration (OH) and routine blood examinations were performed before dialysis. A second cohort of 164 HD patients was retrospectively enrolled to evaluate the relationship between the calculated PVS and the outcome, with an endpoint of all-cause mortality. aPV was significantly associated with TBW, ICW, ECW, OH, and ECW/TBW (all p < 0.001), and most strongly with ECW (r = 0.83). aPV predicted the extent of volume overload with an AUC of 0.770 (p < 0.001), but PVS did not (AUC = 0.617, p = 0.091). Median follow-up time was 53 months, during the course of which 60 (36.58%) patients died. Values for PVS (12.94 ± 10.87% vs. 7.45 ± 5.90%, p = 0.024) and time-averaged PVS (12.83 ± 11.20 vs. 6.78 ± 6.22%, p < 0.001) were significantly increased in patients who died relative to those who survived. A value of time-averaged PVS >8.72% was significantly associated with an increased incidence of all-cause mortality (HR = 2.48, p = 0.0023). aPV was most strongly associated with ECW measured using BIA. This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the survival according to conventional or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)-guided volume control strategy in patients with sepsis-associated AKI receiving CRRT. We also compared patient survival according to achieved volume accumulation rate ([cumulative fluid balance during 3 days × 100]/fluid overload measured by BIA at enrollment) as a post-hoc analysis. We randomly assigned patients to conventional volume control strategy (n = 39) or to BIA-guided volume control strategy (n = 34). There were no differences in 28-day mortality (HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.63–2.23) or 90-day mortality (HR, 0.99; 95% CI 0.57–1.75) between conventional and BIA-guided volume control group. In the secondary analysis, achieved volume accumulation rate was significantly associated with patient survival. Compared with the achieved volume accumulation rate of ≤ − 50%, the HRs (95% CIs) for the risk of 90-day mortality were 1.21 (0.29–5.01), 0.55 (0.12–2.48), and 7.18 (1.58–32.51) in that of − 50–0%, 1–50%, and > 50%, respectively. Post-HSCT clinical outcomes, including acute graft-vs-host disease (aGVHD), engraftment time, oral mucositis (OM), sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), and diarrhoea in relation to nutrition status after HSCT were analysed.Results: After HSCT, 28.21% experienced diminished nutritional status, with 71.43% of those who were wasting before HSCT showing diminished nutritional status, significantly higher than the normal group (18.75%, P = 0.012). Anthropometric changes included significant weight reduction (87.5%, 22.15 ± 7.46 vs 20.74 ± 6.57, P < 0.001) and BMI decrease (90%, 15.19 ± 1.70 vs 14.05 ± 1.48, P < 0.001). Aim Methods Results Conclusions Protein‐energy wasting (PEW) is a common syndrome in patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD) and is associated with poor prognosis. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)‐derived phase angle (PA) is useful for predicting PEW, but sex and age need to be considered. We aimed to reveal sex‐specific cut‐off values of PA predicting PEW in HD patients aged ≥65.This two‐centre retrospective cohort study included patients on HD who underwent BIA. PEW was detected using the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) criteria as a reference. The PA was measured using a multifrequency bioimpedance device. Sex‐specific cut‐off values of PA predicting PEW were detected by receiver‐operator characteristic analysis. We investigated the association between PEW determined using sex‐specific cut‐off values for PA and all‐cause mortality.This study included 274 patients undergoing HD, with a median age of 75 (70–80) years, mean PA of 3.8 ± 1.1° and PEW of 43%. Over a median follow‐up duration of 1095 (400–1095) days, 111 patients died. Cut‐off values of PA predicting PEW were as follows: female, 3.00° (sensitivity, 87.3%; specificity, 77.5%), and male, 3.84° (sensitivity, 77.6%; specificity, 71.4%). The kappa coefficient between sex‐specific cut‐off values of the PA and ISRNM criteria had a moderate coincidence level of 0.55. PEW detected by PA was independently associated with all‐cause mortality (hazard ratio: 2.40; 95% confidence interval: 1.51–3.85; p < .001).Sex‐specific cut‐off values for PA in older HD patients may be useful as a screening tool for predicting PEW and mortality. Background: Previous adult studies have yielded conflicting results regarding whether the presence (D +) or absence (D-) of peritoneal dialysate affects the accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measurements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the accuracy of BIA data varies between D + and D- measurements in children. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited chronic kidney disease stage 5 patients aged 3 to 18 years who received peritoneal dialysis. Body composition was assessed by multifrequency BIA, and values were compared between D + and D- measurements using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: Fifty paired BIA measurements were collected from 18 patients with a mean age of 13.6 ± 4.1 years and a mean dialysate fill volume of 1,006 ± 239.7 ml/m2. Sixteen out of 17 BIA parameters (94.1%) exhibited excellent correlations between D + and D- measurements (ICC values = 0.954, 0.998). There was a trend of increased fluid status, including extracellular water, edema index, and overhydration, in D + measurements, with mean differences (95% CIs) of 0.5 (0.4, 0.6) L, 0.002 (0.001, 0.002), and 0.1 (0.1, 0.2) L, respectively. Soft lean mass and fat-free mass were higher in D + measurements, with mean differences (95% CIs) of 1.4 (1.2, 1.6), and 1.6 (1.4, 1.8) kg, respectively. In addition, patients older than 10 years had a stronger correlation between D + and D- measurements than younger patients. Conclusions: A total of 94.1% of BIA parameters exhibited excellent correlations between D + and D- measurements, especially patients older than 10 years. The study explores the relationship between phase angle (PhA), an indicator of cellular health, and metabolic health parameters among junior sumo wrestlers in Japan. Given the demanding lifestyle and high‐energy diets of sumo wrestlers that predispose them to metabolic syndrome post‐retirement, this study focuses on a younger cohort. The primary aim is to evaluate if PhA could serve as an early indicator of metabolic health issues within this unique demographic. A total of 14 sumo wrestlers aged 9–17 years were assessed to determine the relationship between PhA and various metabolic markers, including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), using a TANITA MC‐780A‐N body composition analyzer and standard blood tests. Bivariate regression analysis and Pearson's correlation revealed a negative relationship between PhA and HbA1c even after adjusting for age and weight (ß = −0.496, r2 = 0.776, r = −0.756, p = 0.004). The results indicate a significant negative relationship between PhA and HbA1c levels, suggesting that lower PhA values, which indicate poorer cellular integrity, are associated with higher HbA1c levels, signifying impaired glycemic control. These findings underscore the potential of PhA as a valuable biomarker for monitoring metabolic health in young sumo wrestlers, with implications for early intervention and management strategies. The objectives of this study were to develop age- and sex-specific reference percentiles for fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) in adolescents aged 14 to 19 years and to determine differences in overweight/obesity classification by FMI and body mass index (BMI). The EVA4YOU study is a single-center cross-sectional study conducted in western Austria. Cardiovascular risks including anthropometric measurements and bioelectrical impedance analysis were assessed in adolescents (mean age 17 years). FMI and FFMI were calculated as the ratio of fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) to the square of height and compared to study population–specific BMI percentiles. One thousand four hundred twenty-two adolescents were included in the analysis. Girls had a significantly higher mean FM and FMI and a significantly lower mean FFM, FFMI (p < 0.001, each), and mean BMI (p = 0.020) than boys. Body composition classification by FMI and BMI percentiles shows a concordance for the < 75th and > 97th percentile, but a significant difference in percentile rank classifications between these two cut-off values (all p < 0.05). Based on FMI, 15.5% (221/1422) of the whole population and 29.4% (92/313) of those between the 75th and 97th percentiles are classified one category higher or lower than those assigned by BMI. Conclusion: Classification of normal or pathologic body composition based on BMI and FMI shows good accordance in the clearly normal or pathologic range. In an intermediate range, FMI reclassifies categories based on BMI in more than a quarter of adolescents. Cut-off values to differentiate normal from pathologic FMI values on a biological basis are needed. Obesity in children and adolescents is a key risk factor for later NCDs, which is commonly measured by Body Mass Index (BMI). • BMI can be misleading as it doesn't distinguish between fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM), leading to potential misclassification of obesity in children. Previous studies have already suggested the use of the Fat Mass Index (FMI) and Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) as a more accurate measures of body composition. What is New: • This study adds the first age- and sex-specific reference values for FMI and FFMI in Austrian adolescents using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as a safe and secure measurement method of a large representative cohort. • We found percentile misclassification between BMI and FMI when categorizing for obesity, especially in intermediate categories of body composition. Furthermore, when comparing the new reference values for FMI and FFMI to existing ones from the US, UK, and Germany we could show a good alignment within the European cohorts and major differences with American values, indicating and confirming the difference of FMI and FFMI for different populations of different ethnical background, living on different continents. A unified diagnostic criterion has yet to be established for sarcopenia. Therefore, we analyzed the reliability and validity of sarcopenia diagnosis using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) compared with the gold standard, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and evaluated the predictive accuracy of BIA for diagnosis. The clinical trial, involving a total of 239 participants, was conducted between December 2018 and September 2019 on healthy volunteers without significant medical histories. The participants underwent health assessments, followed by sequential DEXA and BIA measurements. In both the low and normal appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) groups, there were significant differences in the right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg, ASM, and ASM index (ASMI) between DEXA and BIA across all age groups (p < 0.05). BIA tended to overestimate compared to DEXA, but ASMI values for males and females were consistent with the criteria for sarcopenia. Bland–Altman analysis showed that each segment in both the low and normal ASM groups fell within the limits of agreement (LOA). The diagnosis of sarcopenia using BIA was significantly different from that using DEXA. However, it exhibited a significantly high correlation, fell within the LOA, and demonstrated high predictive accuracy. BIA can be considered an effective tool for diagnosing sarcopenia. Purpose: Lateral sleep position has a significant beneficial effect on the severity of Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central sleep apnea (CSR-CSA) in patients with heart failure (HF). We hypothesized that a reduction in rostral fluid shift from the legs in this position compared with the supine position may contribute to this effect. Methods: In patients with CSR-CSA and an apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15/h (by standard polysomnography), uncalibrated leg fluid volume was measured in the supine, left lateral decubitus, and right lateral decubitus positions (in-laboratory assessment). The correlation between postural changes in fluid volume and corresponding changes in AHI was evaluated. Since there was no difference in both leg fluid volume and AHI between the right and left positions, measurements in these two conditions were combined into a single lateral position. Results: In 18 patients with CSR-CSA, leg fluid volume increased by 2.7 ± 3.1% (p = 0.002) in the lateral position compared to the supine position, while AHI decreased by 46 ± 20% (p < 0.0001) with the same postural change. The correlation between postural changes in AHI and leg fluid volume was 0.22 (p = 0.42). Changes in leg fluid volume were a slow phenomenon, whereas changes in CSR-CSA severity were almost synchronous with changes in posture. Conclusion: Lateral position causes a reduction in rostral fluid shift compared to the supine position, but this change does not correlate with the corresponding change in CSR-CSA severity. The two changes occur on different time scales. These findings question the role of postural changes in rostral fluid shift as a determinant of corresponding changes in CSR-CSA severity. Body composition and phase angle (PhA) have been used to predict mortality in multiple diseases. However, little has been studied regarding segmental measurements, which could potentially help assess subtle changes in specific tissue segments. This study aimed to identify the total PhA cut-off point associated with mortality risk and changes in body composition within a week of hospitalisation in non-critical hospitalised patients with COVID-19. A cohort study was conducted where patients underwent to a complete nutritional assessment upon admission and after seven days, and followed up until hospital discharge or death. A receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to determine the PhA cut-off point, and the Kaplan–Meier estimator was used to determine survival analysis. Segmental and complete body compositions on admission and after 7 d were compared. We included 110 patients (60 men) with a mean age of 50·5 ± 15·0 years and a median BMI of 28·5 (IQR, 25·6–33·5) kg/m2. The median length of hospital stay was 6 (IQR, 4–9) d, and the mortality rate was 13·6 %. The PhA cut-off point obtained was 4°, with significant differences in the survival rate (P < 0·001) and mortality (HR = 5·81, 95 % CI: 1·80, 18·67, P = 0·003). Segmental and whole-body compositions were negatively affected within one week of hospitalisation, with changes in the approach by the graphical method in both sexes. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease, in which permanent joint deformation is largely preventable with the timely introduction of appropriate treatment strategies. However, there is no consensus for patients with RA to monitor their progress and communicate it to the rheumatologist till the condition progresses to remission. In response to this unmet need, we proposed the design of a self-measuring device based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for regular monitoring of inflammation levels. Twenty joints of both hands were measured to monitor trends in inflammation levels. Three electrodes were used to measure two joints of each finger. A central electrode was used for two consecutive measurements. A suitable form factor for the device was proposed for the vertical placement of the hand. To ensure the stability of measurements, an air cushion was incorporated into the back of the hand, hand containers were designed on both sides, and a mobile application was designed. We conducted a convergence-assessment experiment with five air pressures to validate the consistency and convergence of bioimpedance measurements. A heuristic evaluation of the usability around the product and mobile application was conducted in parallel by six subject matter experts and validated the design. Measurement of muscle mass is an integral part of sarcopenia diagnosis. Bioelectrical impedance analysis has been commonly used for muscle mass assessment in many clinical and research settings as it is non-invasive, practical, and portable. However, one of the major handicaps of this measurement technique is that the validity and precision of bioelectrical impedance analysis measurements can be afected by hydration status. In hemodialysis patients, the volume status fuctuates easily and continuously, which is most signifcant between the immediate pre-dialysis and post-dialysis periods. Thus, a signifcant diference in the results of bioelectrical impedance analysis measurement is obviously expected between that obtained before and afer hemodialysis. In fact, many centers perform measurements before hemodialysis, since it is more convenient for both staf and patients. However, the confounding efect of excess water on correct bioelectrical impedance analysis estimations seems substantial. For this reason, it seems more appropriate to perform bioelectrical impedance analysis measurements in chronic hemodialysis patients when they are closer to their dry weight, i.e., afer the dialysis rather than before it. Accordingly, we searched the literature to identify the ideal timing of bioelectrical impedance analysis measurements in patients undergoing hemodialysis. The literature data on this subject indicate that performing bioelectrical impedance analysis measurements in the period afer 15 minutes and within 2 hours afer hemodialysis session will aid in a better estimation of muscle mass in terms of reliability and reproducibility. Background: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) operates under the assumption that the conductor has a uniform cylindrical shape. However, this assumption may be violated if measures are taken in the seated position, especially in people with a high waist circumference (WC). Aims: The aims of this research were to determine whether posture (supine, standing, and seated) and WC affect agreement between BIA and dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) measures of fat mass (FM) and fat‐free mass (FFM). Materials & Methods: Baseline data were collected from 28 adults (mean = 61.4 ± 6.9 years, 64.3% female) with obesity (BMI 38.6 ± 5.0 kg/m2). Body composition was measured using BIA in the supine, standing, and seated positions and by DXA while supine. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analyses with two‐way mixed effects and absolute agreement were performed to determine agreement. Results: Point estimates were excellent for FM and FFM while supine, excellent for FM and good for FFM while standing, and moderate for FM and good for FFM while seated. BIA measures in the supine position resulted in the narrowest 95% confidence intervals compared with other positions. Better agreement was observed across all positions in participants with a WC below the median (118.3 cm). Discussion: Despite the potential pragmatic value of measuring with BIA in a seated position, the results of this analysis demonstrate the poorest agreement between DXA and BIA methods, especially in individuals with high WC. Conclusion: Findings from this study demonstrate that BIA, particularly when measured in a supine position, can serve as a viable alternative to DXA for measuring body composition in people with obesity. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is associated with high burden of atherosclerotic macrovascular disease which could be diagnosed with ankle-brachial index (ABI). Phase angle (PhA) from bioelectric impedance analysis is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases. We investigated the association between low ABI and phase angle in T2DM patients in Ghana. Method: In a cross-sectional study, 462 T2DM patients were systematically recruited for the study. ABI was measured using an 8 Hz continuous Doppler and ABI≤0.9 was considered to be low ABI. PhA was obtained from resistance and reactance from Bioelectric impedance analysis. Results: The prevalence of low ABI was 16 % in the study population. T2DM patients with low ABI have decreased PhA (7.5 ± 1.9 vs 8.3 ± 2.2 units, p = 0.004) compared to those with normal ABI. An increase in phase angle by 1° was associated with a decrease in odds of having low ABI in unadjusted [OR (95 % CI) = 0.79 (0.48 – 0.95), p = 0.007] and adjusted models [0.88 (0.43 – 0.98), p = 0.036]. Conclusion: The prevalence of low ABI in T2DM patients in this study was 16 %. Also, PhA was lower in patients with low ABI compared to those with normal ABI.

Objective: To compare the long-term results of LSG and RYGB with a fixed restrictive component in patients with morbid obesity in terms of weight loss, control of associated diseases and the development of long-term complications, including sarcopenia.Materials and methods: our study included the results of treatment of 251 patients (153 LSG and 98 RYGB). The follow-up period was at least 24 months (median follow-up 38 months). The restrictive component was assessed 12 months after surgery using CT-volumetry. The size of the gastroenetroanastomosis was additionally measured using fibrogastroscopy in the RYGB group. The bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to assess body composition and determine the skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI) initially and during control examinations in the postoperative period.Results: both groups obtained good results in terms of weight loss and control of associated diseases, however, RYGB shows some advantages in these parameters. On the other hand, in the RYGB group a higher rate of progression of signs of sarcopenia was detected (8.2% (including 3% of severe sarcopenia) vs 3.3% in the LSG group). Most patients who progressed to sarcopenia were older, had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), or had mild sarcopenia at baseline.Conclusions: RYGB demonstrates better results in terms of weight loss and control of associated diseases compared to LSG, however, in elderly patients, as well as in the presence of T2DM or signs of sarcopenia, it is advisable to choose operations without a pronounced malabsorptive effect.

In chronic heart failure (CHF) patients malnutrition and/or cachexia are frequently observed syndromes that negatively affect the quality of life and survival of patients. That makes it necessary to investigate reliable methods of assessment of body composition which can facilitate appropriate clinical decisions on patients’ treatment. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a reliable and non-invasive method to test body composition in patients suffering from various chronic diseases, including CHF. The aim of the review was to summarize recent findings on BIA assessment for nutritional and clinical management of CHF. Although BIA is a known technique used for body composition assessment, the number of papers analyzing its utility in cardiovascular diseases is still limited, particularly with a combination of molecular markers. Electrical parameters obtained in BIA in conjunction with biochemical determinations and molecular factors can improve selection of patients at risk of malnutrition and unfavorable prognosis related to nutritional deficits.

Abstract Background Intervertebral disc degeneration and sarcopenia are both age-related diseases without effective treatments. Their comorbidities may worsen the prognosis, and further studies on interaction and therapy are needed. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in intervertebral disc degeneration, and to compare the characteristics of intervertebral disc degeneration with and without sarcopenia and effects of interferential current. Methods One hundred twenty disc degeneration patients were included from 2021 to 2022 in a single institute. Medical records, examination results and radiological reports were reviewed. Patients with sarcopenia were screened and grouped according to Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. VAS, ODI, SARC-F, SMI, gait speed (GS), grip strength, disc Pfirrmann grading, standard cross-sectional area (SCSA), degree of fatty infiltration (DFF), and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) were assessed before and after treatment. Results The prevalence of sarcopenia in intervertebral disc degeneration was 28.3%. The difference of VAS, ODI, disc Pfirrmann grading, SCSA, DFF and NCV between two groups were significant before intervention (P 0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of sarcopenia was high in intervertebral disc degeneration, and paravertebral muscles degeneration correlated with the degree of disc degeneration. Compared to those without sarcopenia, intervertebral disc degeneration patients with sarcopenia have more severe pain, poorer mobility and neurological function. Interferential current is effective in intervertebral disc degeneration patients and sarcopenia patients.

Background Fluid overload is an independent risk factor of mortality in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) receiving continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT). However, the association between fluid status, as assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) or lung ultrasound, and survival in patients with AKI requiring CKRT has not been established. Methods We analyzed 36 participants with sepsis-associated AKI who received CKRT at a tertiary hospital. The main exposures were volume surrogates: 1) overhydration normalized by extracellular water (OH/ECW, L/L) assessed by BIA, 2) the number of B-lines measured by lung ultrasound, and 3) weight change ([body weight at CKRT initiation – body weight at admission] × 100/body weight at admission). The primary outcome was the 28-day mortality. Results Seventeen participants (47.2%) died within 28 days. There were no significant correlations between OH/ECW and weight change (R2 = 0.040, p = 0.24), number of B-lines and OH/ECW (R2 = 0.056, p = 0.16), or weight change and number of B-lines (R2 = 0.014, p = 0.49). Kaplan-Meier analyses revealed that patients in the highest tertile of OH/ECW showed a significantly lower cumulative 28-day survival probability than the others (the lowest + middle tertiles). The survival probability of participants in the highest tertile of the number of B-lines or weight change did not differ from that of their counterparts. In a multivariate Cox proportional hazard model, the hazard ratio for the highest tertile of OH/ECW was 3.83 (95% confidence interval, 1.04–14.03). Conclusion Volume overload assessed using BIA (OH/ECW) was associated with the 28-day survival rate in patients with sepsis-associated AKI who received CKRT.

Abstract Background Few reports have performed a prognostic analysis based on bioelectrical impedance analysis in patients with radical resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and its usefulness in prognostic analysis remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate body composition changes in patients undergoing radical resection for PDAC and analyze its impact on prognosis. Methods The medical records of radical resection for patients with PDAC were retrospectively reviewed, and the parameters of body composition, including body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass (BFM), and extracellular water-total body water ratio, from preoperatively to 12 months postoperatively, for each surgical procedure were measured based on direct segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis with an InBody 770 (InBody Inc., Tokyo, Japan) device. The clinicopathological and prognostic factors were analyzed. Background Plasma volume (PV) calculated from hematocrit and body weight has applications in cardiovascular disease. The current study investigated the validity of the calculated PV for predicting volume overload and its prognostic utility in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD).Patients and methods Fifty-four HD patients were prospectively enrolled, and their actual PV (aPV) and relative PV status (PVS) were calculated. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) with assessment of and total body water (TBW), intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water (ECW), and overhydration (OH) and routine blood examinations were performed before dialysis. A second cohort of 164 HD patients was retrospectively enrolled to evaluate the relationship between the calculated PVS and the outcome, with an endpoint of all-cause mortality.Results aPV was significantly associated with TBW, ICW, ECW, OH, and ECW/TBW (all p 8.72% was significantly associated with an increased incidence of all-cause mortality (HR = 2.48, p = 0.0023).Conclusions aPV was most strongly associated with ECW measured using BIA. HD patients with higher time-averaged PVS had a higher rate of all-cause mortality.

This paper presents baseline results from the NutriEcoMuscle study, a multicenter observational study conducted in Spain which focused on changes in nutritional status, body composition, and functionality in post-intensive care unit (ICU) COVID-19 patients following a nutritional intervention. Assessments at hospital discharge included Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, the Barthel index, handgrip strength (HGS) and the Timed Up-and-Go test, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and nutritional ultrasound (US). The study involved 96 patients (71.9% male, mean age 58.8 years, mean BMI 28.8 kg/m2, 36.5% obese). All patients were malnourished at discharge according to GLIM and SGA. Functional status declined from admission up to hospital discharge. A total of 33.3% of patients had a low fat-free mass index (FFMI) and 29.5% had a low phase angle (PhA). Myosteatosis was observed in 83.7% of the population. There was a positive correlation between rectus femoris cross-sectional area, PhA, FFMI, and HGS. In conclusion, post-critically ill COVID-19 patients commonly suffer from malnutrition and reduced muscle mass, causing a loss of independence at hospital discharge. BIA and US could be valuable tools for assessing body composition in these patients. (1) Multimodal treatment is a standard treatment for patients with obesity. However, weight loss also leads to reductions in fat-free mass. The aim was to investigate whether additional protein intake contributes to better preservation of lean body mass (LBM). (2) A total of 267 obesity patients (age 45.8 years; BMI 47.3 kg/m2) were included in this analysis. For the first 12 weeks of the program, patients were given a formula-based diet of 800–1000 kcal per day. Patients were divided into a control group (CG) (n = 148) and a protein group (PG) (n = 119). The PG was characterized by an additional protein intake with the aim of consuming 1.5 g of protein per kilogram of normalized body weight, whereas the CG had a protein intake of 1 g/kg/d. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was performed at the beginning (t0) and after 12 weeks (t1) of the program. (3) There were no significant differences between the groups with respect to weight loss (p = 0.571). LBM was also significantly reduced in both groups, without significant differences between CG and PG. Aim: The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus reported that evidence for the diagnosis of sarcopenia based on ultrasonography findings is lacking. The revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People consensus stated that ultrasonography is reliable and valid for assessing muscle size in older adults. The present study aimed to determine the predictive accuracy of ultrasonography for sarcopenia in older adults in Japan. Methods: A total of 1229 participants aged 65–91 years were included in this cross‐sectional study. The thickness of the anterior compartment of the right thigh was assessed using B‐mode ultrasonography. The measurement position was at the midpoint of the thigh. In addition, the grip strength, gait speed, Five‐Time Sit‐to‐Stand Test, Short Physical Performance Battery score and skeletal muscle mass index were evaluated. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 algorithm. We calculated the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (95% confidence intervals) and cutoff values for the thigh muscle thickness in sarcopenia were 0.901 (0.856–0.946) and 4.0 cm in men, respectively, and 0.923 (0.851–0.995) and 3.1 cm in women, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for each subdomain of sarcopenia, such as grip strength and gait speed, ranged from 0.618 to 0.872. Conclusions: In the present study, the suggested cutoff mid‐thigh muscle thicknesses on ultrasonography for predicting sarcopenia were 4.0 cm in men and 3.1 cm in women. Purpose: The purpose of this cross-sectional evaluation was to determine the associations between raw bioelectrical impedance and cardiometabolic health parameters in a sample of young non-Hispanic White and African American adults. Methods: A total of 96 (female: 52, male: 44) non-Hispanic White (n = 45) and African American adults (n = 51) between the ages of 19 and 37 yr (22.7 ± 3.83 yr) completed several fasted assessments including resting systolic blood pressure (rSBP), blood glucose (FBG), blood lipids, and bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy. Bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy–derived measurements included phase angle, bioimpedance index (BI), impedance ratio (IR), reactance index (XCi), fat-free mass (FFM), FFM index (FFMi), and absolute (a) and relative (%) total body water (TBW) and extracellular (ECF) and intracellular fluid (ICF). All bioelectric variables were collected at 50 kHz other than IR (250 kHz/5 kHz). Multiple regressions were conducted and adjusted for sex, age, and body mass index. Results: rSBP was positively, and HDL was inversely, associated with all bioelectrical impedance and absolute hydration variables (all P ≤ 0.050) other than XCi for rSBP and XCi and FFMi for HDL. rSBP (P < 0.001) was inversely, and HDL (P = 0.034) was positively, associated with IR. FBG was positively associated with BI, XCi, FFM, TBWa, and ECFa (all P < 0.050). Metabolic syndrome severity was positively associated with BI, FFM, TBWa, and ECFa for women (all P ≤ 0.050) and with ICFa for African American women (P = 0.016). Conclusions: Given the rapid increase in the prevalence of cardiometabolic health risks among young adults and the broad use of bioelectrical impedance in practice, the conflicting associations we observed in this age group suggest that bioelectrical impedance parameters should be used with caution in the context of cardiometabolic health risks and age. Objective: This study aimed to assess the association between measures of frailty phenotype (FP) and malnutrition, and sarcopenia measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), in individuals aged 50 and above attending an outpatient falls clinic. Methods: The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe Frailty Instrument (SHAREFI) gauged FP status, while nutritional assessment relied on the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA®-SF). Body composition, specifically appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM), was determined through TANITA® DC-430MA BIA. Multivariable binary logistic regression models were used to predict pre-frailty or frailty based on SHARE-FI and at-risk of malnutrition or malnutrition based on MNA®-SF. Results: Out of the 123 participants (68 women, 55 men), 56.1% were classified as robust, 27.6% as living with pre-frailty, and 16.3% as living with frailty according to SHARE-FI. MNA®-SF results were available for 116 patients, with 54.3% categorised as normal, 39.7% at risk of malnutrition, and 6.0% as malnourished. Among the 118 patients who underwent BIA, ASMM was independently associated with pre-frail/frail status, but there was no significant association between abnormal MNA®-SF and sarcopenia. The pharmacodynamics in patients with high body fat percentage might be similar to those in obese patients. This randomised controlled clinical trial observed the effects of rocuronium in patients with different percent body fats (PBFs). Fifty‐four patients who underwent elective urological or pelvic surgery under general anaesthesia at Shanghai General Hospital were included in the present study; 51 patients were included for data analysis. Patients with normal PBF (<25%) were given a single dose of rocuronium calculated based on total body weight (N‐TBW, control group). Patients with a higher PBF (≥25%) were given a single dose of rocuronium calculated based on total body weight (H‐TBW). Patients with higher PBF and rocuronium were dosed based on fat‐free mass (H‐FFM). A train of four (TOF)‐Watch acceleromyography monitor was used to measure the effects of the rocuronium. H‐TBW (91.9 ± 28.8 s) had significantly shorter onset time than N‐TBW and H‐FFM (p = 0.003). H‐TBW had significantly longer clinical duration time and pharmacological duration time than the other groups (p = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively); the TOF ratio0.25–0.9 time was significantly different among the three groups (p = 0.005). There were no significant differences in the recovery time (p = 0.103) or recovery index (p = 0.159) among the three groups. The effects of rocuronium dosed based on FFM in patients with high PBFs are similar to those in normal patients.
