El Uruguay transita cambios en el uso del suelo, la utilización de bienes y servicios provistos por la naturaleza, así como en los sistemas de gestión y gobernanza asociados. La expansión e intensificación de la agricultura y de las explotaciones forestales, junto a la intensificación ganadera durante los últimos 15 años, han condicionado importantes desafíos en la gestión del agua. Simultáneamente, la gestión de los recursos acuáticos procura superar la fragmentación en el análisis y toma de decisiones, avanzando hacia modelos más integrales, con mayor capacidad de aprendizaje y manejo de la incertidumbre. En este contexto, el proyecto procuró fortalecer los procesos de análisis y toma de decisión a través de la recopilación y construcción de bases de datos sobre atributos hidrológicos y de calidad del agua de estaciones de mues- treos localizados en el territorio nacional, así como diversas características de las cuencas de drenaje asociadas (tamaño de las cuencas, topografía, red de tributarios, tipo y usos del suelo, cobertura de pastizales y formaciones boscosas, vertidos puntuales, entre otros). Mediante la combinación de la teledetección, sistemas de información geográfico y técnicas estadísticas se identificaron los principales factores naturales y de origen antrópico que condicionan las diferencias espaciales observadas en atributos claves tanto de cantidad como de calidad. En este proceso se relevaron las principales fortalezas y debilidades del sistema de monitoreo actual, así como posibles estrategias de fortalecimiento en un escenario de cooperación interinstitucional e internivel de gobierno, combinando estrategias de descentralización y centralización, fomentando una estructura en red de capacidades de monitoreo, fiscalización y contralor distribuidas en el territorio. Los aportes del proyecto son insumos para un proceso de co-diseño de estrategias a definir en la red de actores del sistema actual de gobernanza del agua, proceso que se encuentra en pleno desarrollo. Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis is a commercially important perciform fish caught as bycatch by trawlers throughout its latitudinal distribution range (from 23° S in Brazil to 47° S in Argentina). It is associated with the catches of Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and Patagonian red shrimp Pleocticus muelleri in San Matías Gulf (SMG). The main objective of this study was to describe the first data on the growth of this species in SMG and to compare the results with available information for other areas of the Argentine Continental Shelf (ACS). The study was carried out using 294 specimens (196 females, 97 males and one of indeterminate sex) collected over four non-consecutive years from commercial/recreational fishing and during research cruises. The age of individuals was determined by reading and counting opaque-hyaline rings on the sagittae otoliths. The maximum ages observed were 14 years for females and 12 years for males. Growth parameters were estimated using the von Bertalanffy mode. Significant differences in L∞ parameter between sexes were found (L∞ males = 54.58 cm; L∞ females = 78.31 cm, p < 0.05). In the north Patagonian region of the Argentinean Continental Shelf, the San Jorge Gulf (SJG; 45°‐47°S, 65°30ʹ‐67°30ʹW) is the main nursery ground of age‐0+ Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933, one of the most important fishery resources in Argentina. The gulf exhibits strong seasonal and spatial fluctuations in environmental features, which might affect survival of age‐0+ individuals and recruitment to the adult population. Our main goal was to evaluate the seasonal and spatial dynamics of their nutritional status within the SJG in winter 2016, spring 2016 and summer 2017. Condition indices (relative condition factor Kn, hepatosomatic index HSI and liver lipid content %L) and diet information (feeding incidence and relative importance of prey) were combined with physical (temperature and salinity) and biological (satellite chlorophyll‐a concentration; chl‐a) data. Age‐0+ condition indices and prey intake showed significant seasonal variations, with minimum values in winter, intermediate in summer and maximum in spring, strongly coupled to the mean chl‐a concentration in each season. Herbivorous euphausiids Euphausia spp. were the preferred prey along the study period. A bottom‐up effect on condition of age‐0+ hake is suggested, manifested as lower condition values in winter, the less productive season. Spatially, better conditioned individuals matched sectors of the gulf where chl‐a concentrations were higher, coupled to the presence of frontal systems. Monitoring age‐0+ hake nutritional status is relevant in the current global change scenario, which might modify phytoplankton biomass and composition and, consequently, the herbivorous zooplankton abundances. The aims of this study were to estimate seasonal spore availability in the carrageenophyte Gigartina skottsbergii from the Patagonian Atlantic coast, evaluate the effect of induction methods and culture conditions on spore release, and assess spore settlement on different substrates. Fertile fronds were collected in southern Argentina. The density and size of reproductive structures and spore output were registered seasonally. Spore release was evaluated using different induction methods and conditions. Finally, different natural substrates were assessed for spore settlement. Spore availability is restricted to winter and spring. Cystocarps and tetrasporangial sori reached maturity towards winter, and spores were released in large amounts during winter and spring, with higher tetraspore than carpospore release. Spontaneous discharge would appear to be a more advisable induction method than desiccation and high salinity. Temperature and photoperiod did not have a significant effect on total spore output. After 2 weeks of incubation, no differences were found among spore densities on glass, pebbles, clams, or mussels. Despite the low survival rate registered on all substrates, spores germinated and developed healthily. This is the first study to evaluate carpospore and tetraspore availability throughout the year and the viability of in vitro spore culture of G. skottsbergii from the South American Atlantic coast. The feeding ecology of farmed fish escapees has seldom been assessed, although they are one of aquaculture’s main environmental impacts. Here we tested if the diet of Oncorhynchus mykiss rainbow trout escapees was affected by their dispersal from farms in a reservoir in Argentine Patagonia by combining stomach content and stable isotope data, and compared their spatial patterns with those of caged and wild (previously naturalized) conspecifics. Our results reveal a shift in the stomach content and δ13C values of escapees, reflecting a farm (pellets) to wild (mainly Daphnia sp.) diet transition associated to dispersal from farms. The δ13C signal of escapees sampled within the farming area was close to that of caged fish, whereas the δ13C of escapees captured far from it was indistinguishable from that of wild rainbow trout. Furthermore, escapee dispersal from farms was associated with a transition from indiscriminate surface feeding (on indigestible floating items) typical of caged fish to preying heavily on Daphnia sp. In contrast, wild fish diet was homogeneous across all sites. Farm escapees gradually acquiring the feeding behavior of their wild conspecifics as they disperse from the farms may promote competition for food and space, and increase their chances for survival in the wild. El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar las especies de cianobacterias ácido-termófilas que, junto con las aguas, microalgas y fangos, son importantes recursos termales utilizados con fines terapéuticos en el Complejo Termal Copahue. El trabajo presenta descripciones, comentarios e ilustraciones de las 11 especies identificadas pertenecientes a nueve géneros: Chroococcidiopsis, Chroococcus, Kamptonema, Komvophoron, Leptolyngbya, Mastigocladus, Oscillatoria, Phormidium y Spirulina recolectadas en diez sitios de muestreo. Cinco especies: Chroococcus membraninus, Chroococcidiopsis thermalis, Spirulina gracilis, Phormidium thermobium y Komvophoron jovis, son citadas por primera vez para la Argentina. Además, se aislaron y mantuvieron en cultivo unialgal cuatro especies: Chroococcus membraninus, Chroococcidiopsis thermalis, Kamptonema animale y Mastigocladus laminosus. M. laminosus resultó ser la especie encontrada con mayor frecuencia en el área, ya que se la registró en ocho de los diez sitios. La Laguna Los Callos fue el sitio con mayor diversidad, donde se registró el mayor número de especies, ocho en total. Todas las especies de cianobacterias estudiadas en el presente trabajo son utilizadas, ya sea mediante la aplicación directa de las matas o por la utilización de sus componentes activos, en las aguas y en los fangos The objective of this work was to identify the species of acid-thermophilic cyanobacteria which,together with the waters, microalgae and mud, are important thermal resources used for therapeuticpurposes in the Copahue Thermal Complex. The work presents descriptions, comments, and illustrationsof the 11 identified species belonging to nine genera: Chroococcidiopsis, Chroococcus, Kamptonema,Komvophoron, Leptolyngbya, Mastigocladus, Oscillatoria, Phormidium and Spirulina, collected inten sampling sites. M. laminosus was the most frequently encountered species of the area, since it was found in eight of the ten sites. The Laguna Los Callos was the most diverse site, with the largest number of species, eight in total. All the species of cyanobacteria studied in the present work are used, either through the direct application of themats or through the use of their active components in water, and mud. The molluskan digestive gland has been widely studied and its structural and ultrastructural descriptions have allowed the understanding of its several functions. Despite siphonarids are broadly distributed around the world, morphological studies on their digestive system are poorly represented. The panpulmonate limpet Siphonaria lessonii is the most abundant gastropod and the dominant herbivore in the rocky intertidal coast of Buenos Aires. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology, histology, ultrastructure, and histochemistry of the digestive gland of this gastropod as well as the cycle of activity of digestion. For that, different histochemical techniques along with light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were employed. This study revealed a complex epithelium, composed of a simple layer with five cell types. Digestive cells and vacuolated cells are responsible for intracellular digestion and energy accumulation; basophilic cells, secrete substances that would be involved in extracellular digestion; pigmented cells might have an excretory function and thin cells would correspond to undifferentiated cells. In addition, the tubules present a changing morphology according to the digestive activity that they undergo. As S. lessonii is a grazer that feeds continuously, the cycle of activity of the digestive gland seems to be daily. Fil: Landro, Sonia Maribel. Primary production hotspots in the marine environment occur where the combination of light, turbulence, temperature and nutrients makes the proliferation of phytoplankton possible. Satellite-derived surface chlorophyll-a distributions indicate that these conditions are frequently associated with sharp water mass transitions named “marine fronts”. Given the link between primary production, consumers and ecosystem functions, marine fronts could play a key role in the production of ecosystem services (ES). Using the shelf break front in the Argentine Sea as a study case, we show that the high primary production found in the front is the main ecological feature that supports the production of tangible (fisheries) and intangible (recreation, regulation of atmospheric gases) marine ES and the reason why the provision of ES in the Argentine Sea concentrates there. This information provides support to satellite chlorophyll as a good indicator of multiple marine ES. We suggest that marine fronts could be considered as marine ES hot spots. Trawling is the main fishing practice worldwide and its ecosystem effects have been raising concern over the past decades. Long-term impacts can be monitored through changes in the trophic structure, and several studies evaluated trophic level (TL) shifts in fish populations between trawled and untrawled environments. However, published results are contrasting. We performed a metanalysis integrating all available studies that evaluated TL shifts in fishes between trawled and untrawled environments and conducted a local study comparing several features of the trophic ecology in two species of fishes. According to the metanalysis, TL does not change significantly with trawling. In contrast, the local study showed higher TLs and broader isotopic niches in the trawled environment. Diet reconstruction indicated a potential consumption of hake, the main discard component, at the trawled environment. All the studies used in the metanalysis were conducted in the Northern Hemisphere, whereas the local study represents the first data available from the Southern Hemisphere. As industrial commercial fisheries in Argentina are relatively recent, it is possible that our data are capturing the initial stage of ecological changes induced by trawling, compared with the historical fisheries located at the Northern Hemisphere. The snailfish, Careproctus pallidus, is a liparid fish that spawns within the branchial chambers of the king crab Lithodes santolla and develops its embryonic stages inside the chambers until it forms a well-developed free-living yolk-sac feeding larvae hatch. The aim of this work was to explore the decrease in energy content of C. pallidus during its early development. Five egg masses with embryos in cleavage stage were extracted from the branchial chambers of five different king crabs and kept in aquaria through hatching until complete absorption of the yolk-sac. To monitor energy content during development, subsamples of eggs (in cleavage, tail-bud, and late embryo stages) and larvae [1, 13, 20–22 and 24–26 days post-hatch (DPH)] were removed. Each stage of development (eggs and larvae) was weighed (wet weight), counted (N) and dried at 60°C. Both energy density (ED) and energy content (EC) per individual (egg or larva) were measured. Significant differences in ED and ECi were observed among the early stages of C. pallidus, although pairwise comparisons differed. From the earliest developmental stage (cleavage) to a larva of 24–26 DPH, the ED of C. pallidus decreased by approximately 40% and the ECi by 87%. Compared with other marine fish species, C. pallidus seems to begin life with lower energy if size of egg, incubation period, and degree of development until it reached the hatching stage are considered. Estuarine abiotic characteristics vary with tidal variations and fresh water input, both driven by climatic conditions and often cyclical climatic events. Estuaries are very productive and bivalves often represent a substantial proportion of the biomass with important ecological role. Salinity fluctuation is often a key environmental factor affecting bivalves shell growth and individual condition index (CI), parameters that in turn can be used to show the quality of the environment for one population. The stout razor clam Tagelus plebeius is an euryhaline filter-feeder species that inhabits sandy-silt tidal flats within a wide salinity range. The objective of this study was to evaluate, by survey sampling and in situ transplant experiments among sites with different salinity, whether shell growth and CI of T. plebeius vary with the salinity regime. We hypothesized a higher growth and CI related to the intermediate salinity. Clams and abiotic parameters were sampled in three estuaries of the northern Argentinian coast with different salinity regimes (Bahía Samborombón (36°19′S), Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (37°32′S) and Bahía Blanca (38° 47′S)) and in three sites along the salinity gradient of the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon where the manipulative experiments were also conducted. Shells were more elongated in sites with lower salinity; but the growth rate (k) and the CI were higher in sites with intermediate salinity. Furthermore, clams transplanted from intermediate salinity sites to those with higher or lower salinity showed a disadvantage in shell growth. Considering the scenario of climatic-driven salinity changes in these estuaries and given that T. plebeius is the only native bivalve species in those intertidal zones, having a relevant ecological role and conspicuous fossil presence in Holocene outcrops, our results highlight the relevance of this clam as a valuable target for future studies on conservation biology and paleobiology. El glifosato es el herbicida más utilizado a nivel mundial. Puede llegar a los cuerpos de agua y afectar a las comunidades microbianas. Comparamos los efectos del glifosato grado técnico y dos formulados comerciales sobre una comunidad periférica de agua dulce. Se llevó a cabo un experimento de laboratorio con cuatro tratamientos: glifosato ácido grado técnico, Glifosato II Atanor, Roundup Max, a una concentración de 3 mg de ingrediente activo/L, y un Control. A los 2, 5 y 9 días posteriores a la aplicación de los herbicidas se determinaron la concentración de pigmentos, peso seco, peso seco libre de cenizas y densidad algal del perifiton. Se registró un incremento de la abundancia de Cyanobacteria y una disminución de Chlorophyta y Bacillariophyta en todos los tratamientos con herbicida. Este efecto fue mayor con la adición de Roundup Max y Glifosato II Atanor, y fue menor con glifosato grado técnico, sugiriendo que los aditivos en los formulados comerciales pueden intensificar los efectos del glifosato Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide worldwide. It may reach water bodies and affect microbial communities. We compared the effects of two commercial formulations and technical-grade glyphosate on a freshwater periphytic community. A laboratory bioassay was carried out with four treatments: technical-grade glyphosate acid, Glifosato II Atanor, Roundup Max, at a concentration of 3 mg active ingredient/L, and Control. At 2, 5 and 9 days after herbicide application, pigments concentration, dry weight, ash-free dry weight, and periphytic algal density were determined. An increase of Cyanobacteria and a decrease of Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta abundances were registered in all treatments with the herbicide. This effect was greater when Roundup Max and Glifosato II Atanor® were added, and was lower with technical-grade glyphosate, suggesting that additives in the commercial formulations may enhance glyphosate effects. Live transport to markets requires a baseline on the effects of temperature during air-exposure and the subsequent recovery in water. Our aim was to analyze the physiological effect of 24 h of air exposure in commercial male Lithodes santolla at different temperatures and subsequent re-immersion. Three groups of animals were air-exposed at three temperatures (4 °C, 8 °C and 12 °C) for 24 h, and then re-submersed for 12 h. The control group was kept in water at 8 °C. Samples of haemolymph were extracted after air exposure and re-immersed. We measured superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), ascorbic acid (AA), and protein oxidation (PO). Animals exposed at 12 °C died during emersion. Almost all measured parameters changed with air exposure and temperature. The total recovery of most of the analyzed oxidative stress parameters was attained only at 8 °C, where SOD, CAT and GPx, AA, glucose, and pH returned to values similar to the control group. In animals exposed at 4 °C, only SOD and AA returned to basal levels. Acclimation temperature is an important parameter to consider in the shipping-stock chain of L. santolla, since changes in temperature might be an extra factor of stress during recovery of the animal, besides the reperfusion itself. Southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) populations were severelydepleted in past centuries by intensive whaling, but many are now recover-ing after receiving international protection in 1935 (IWC 2012). In the SouthAtlantic, the population of southern right whales that migrates each australwinter to calve at Península Valdés, Argentina (Payne 1986; IWC 2001,2012), began experiencing unusually high calf deaths in 2003. Sphagnum-dominated ecosystem plays major roles as carbon sinks at the global level. Associated microbial communities, in particular, eukaryotes, play significant roles in nutrient fixation and turnover. In order to understand better the ecological processes driven by these organisms, the first step is to characterise these associated organisms. We characterised the taxonomic diversity, and from this, inferred the functional diversity of microeukaryotes in Sphagnum mosses in tropical, subtropical and temperate climatic zones through an environmental DNA diversity metabarcoding survey of the V9 region of the gene coding for the RNA of the small subunit of the ribosomes (SSU rRNA). As microbial processes are strongly driven by temperatures, we hypothesised that saprotrophy would be highest in warm regions, whereas mixotrophy, an optimal strategy in oligotrophic environments, would peak under colder climates. Phylotype richness was higher in tropical and subtropical climatic zones than in the temperate region, mostly due to a higher diversity of animal parasites (i.e. Apicomplexa). Decomposers, and especially opportunistic yeasts and moulds, were more abundant under warmer climates, while mixotrophic organisms were more abundant under temperate climates. The dominance of decomposers, suggesting a higher heterotrophic activity under warmer climates, is coherent with the generally observed faster nutrient cycling at lower latitudes; this phenomenon is likely enhanced by higher inputs of nutrients most probably brought in the system by Metazoa, such as arthropods. The rule of thumb in marine trophodynamics indicates that the bigger an organism, the higher its trophic level (TROPH). This generalization leads to the assumption that fishes increase their TROPH with growth. However, a recent review showed that for many species, TROPH does not increase with body size, suggesting that size-independent feeding is not rare in marine fishes. Here, we assessed some morphological traits of marine fishes that could potentially be used as indicators for the ability to vary TROPH with body size. Stable isotope values of nitrogen were used as a proxy TROPH. The specific objectives were as follows: (a) to evaluate the relationship between the oral gape and the trophodynamic trend and (b) to quantify the relevance of 11 external morphological traits in determining the size-based trophodynamics. We used random forest models to identify the morphological traits that would help predict which species would have the potential to increase TROPH with growth and which would have not. The selected traits included the pelvic fin relative position, the dorsal fin shape, total length, and relative mouth size. Our results also showed a marked relationship between the rate of increase in the oral gape and TROPH. The analyses presented here provide the first comprehensive and quantitative review aiming at linking the trophodynamics of marine fishes with external morphological traits. A batch culture experiment was conducted to study the interactive effects of ocean acidification (OA) and solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280–400 nm) on the harmful dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi. Cells were incubated in 7-days trials under four treatments. Physiological (growth, pigments, UVabc) and toxicity (hemolytic activity and its toxicity to zebrafish embryos) response variables were measured in four treatments, representing two factorial combinations of CO2 (400 and 1000 μatm) and solar irradiance (with or without UVR). Toxic species K. mikimotoi showed sustained growth in all treatments, and there was not statistically significant difference among four treatments. Cell pigment content decreased, but UVabc and hemolytic activity increased in all HC treatments and PAB conditions. The toxicity to zebrafish embryos of K. mikimotoi was not significantly different among four treatments. All HC and UVR conditions and the combinations of HC*UVR (HC-PAB) positively affected the UVabc, hemolytic activity in comparison to the LC*P (LC-P) treatment, and negatively affected the pigments. Ocean acidification (OA) was probably the main factor that affected the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and UVabc, but UVR was the main factor that affected the carotenoid (Caro) and hemolytic activity. There were no significant interactive effects of OA*UVR on growth, toxicity to zebrafish embryos. If these results are extrapolated to the natural environment, it can be hypothesized that this strain (DP-C32) of K. mikimotoi cells have the efficient mechanisms to endure the combination of ocean acidification and solar UVR. It is assumed that this toxic strain could form harmful bloom and enlarge the threatening to coastal communities, marine animals, even human health under future conditions. Fil: Wang, Xinjie. The morphology of corellids (Ascidiacea) has led to numerous misidentifications and wrong taxonomic decisions over the last century. Paradoxically, the morphology has also enabled new species to be identified and ancient entities to be re-established in the Southern Hemisphere. There are many examples of the integration of morphological and molecular data leading to the same taxonomic conclusions, and therefore we aimed to analyse DNA sequences of the gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I of currently accepted species within Corellidae occurring in the Southern Hemisphere. Haplotype networks along with phylogenetic trees and genetic distances not only corroborate the distinction between Corella eumyota and Corella antarctica, but also separate the latter into two potential groups, one located in Terre Adélie and the other in the Antarctic Peninsula (AP). Furthermore, the C. antarctica group from the AP was closely related to the allied abyssal species, Corynascidia suhmi from Terre Adélie. Although the number of new sequences is reduced, our results are congruent with a long record of suspicion on the matter and stress the need for deeper and more extensive investigation of this ascidian family. Functional diversity is the component of diversity that influences ecosystem dynamics, stability, productivity, nutrient balance, and other aspects of ecosystem functioning. We evaluate the spatio-temporal variability of the functional traits (biological traits analysis), functional diversity indices (functional richness, functional evenness, functional divergence and functional dispersion) and AZTI marine biotic index in response to the distinct levels of sewage contamination at different sites on intertidal abrasion platforms. Variations in macrobenthic functional structure between reference and impacted sites were evident in the study area. The functional richness showed a pattern with higher values in the reference sites; Functional evenness showed a similar pattern, but only during spring. Functional divergence presented lower values in the impacted sites during autumn and spring. The functional diversity indices (functional richness and functional evenness) and the AZTI marine biotic index presented a negative relationship, indicating that functional diversity is related to benthic environmental health. Thus, biological traits analysis and functional diversity indices, especially FRic that reveals differences in macrobenthic functional structure between impacted and reference sites during all seasons, represent an informative and useful tool to describe the different aspects of sewage impacts in benthic assemblages on rocky shores. Cultural eutrophication has promoted theapplication of several mitigation strategies in the last50 years. In this study we tested the combined effectsof two techniques: calcium hydroxide [(Ca(OH)2),lime] and a free-floating macrophyte (Salvinia rotundifoliaWilld) to examine the soluble reactive phosphorusremoval capability and the effects on plankton(phytoplankton and zooplankton) structure in a in situlake mesocosms experiment. The experiment lasted10 days (n = 12, 500 l each) with a control and threetreatments (lime (CH), plants (FM), and thecombination of both (CH ? FM)). Samples of severalphysical and chemical variables (including nutrients)and phytoplankton were taken at the beginning, 2 daysafter, 4 days, and 10 days (end of the experiment).Zooplankton was sampled at the beginning and at theend. The highest depletion effect of soluble reactivephosphorus (SRP) was observed in presence of lime.Phytoplankton biovolume was highly and negativelyaffected in lime treatments (CH and CH ? FM).Zooplankton changed from Rotifera to Cladocera andCopepoda in presence of macrophytes. We concludethat lime ? plants reduces more effectively SRP,phytoplankton biovolume and promotes herbivorouszooplankton development; becoming by this way, in asuitable mitigation strategy to be explored in futurefield manipulation studies. The main goal of this study was to examine the nutritional condition of Engraulis anchoita larvae during the austral spring-summer seasons of 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 in highly productive waters in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean called El Rincón. RNA/DNA (RDs) index and derived index of Growth performance (Gpf) were used. Significant differences were observed in average RDs indices for 2010/2011 (5.27 ± 3.26) and 2012/2013 (0.81 ± 0.44). A difference in the years was also observed in Growth performance with higher values in 2010/2011 (2.45 ± 1.83) compared to 2012/2013 (−0.03 ± 0.25). Anchovy larvae captured in 2010/2011 were in good condition (Gpf > 1). During 2012/2013, extremely high larval densities were observed although Gpf values were very low indicating poor larval condition. Chlorophyll dynamics differed between sampled periods, with higher maximum values during spring 2012 as compared to 2010. Concerning chlorophyll concentrations showed a sharp decline in the values for the rest of the 2012/2013 season. We propose that the low larval growth and condition observed during 2012/2013 may have resulted from a decrease in chlorophyll concentrations together with very large larval densities which enhanced the competition for food within the larval population. Our results reinforce the idea that satellite ocean color products can be valuable tools for understanding variability in ecosystem dynamics and its effects on reproductive success in fish. Zearaja chilensis has been reported from Southern Brazil in the Southwest Atlantic (SWA) to northern Chile in the Southeast Pacific (SEP), and it was listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Recent molecular studies have called into question the conspecificity between specimens from these opposite coasts of South America, which can have implications for the conservation status of the species. To verify the identity of specimens identified as Z. chilensis, 47 individuals from SWA and 22 from SEP were examined. By comparing external morphology, spinulation pattern, clasper, egg cases, and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) sequence data, differences between groups were found. Adults from SWA presented longer snout length and shorter tail than those from SEP. Dermal denticles were restricted to the rostral area in SWA skates, whereas in SEP skates most of the dorsal surface was covered with denticles. Marked differences in the morphology of several components of clasper were noticeable. Egg cases of SWA skates had thinner lateral keels than those of SEP. Molecular analysis revealed two well-defined cohesive clusters, corresponding to SWA and SEP specimens, respectively. Average K2P distance between groups was 3.4%, higher than expected for intraspecific differences, and sequences were assigned to different BINs. These integrative approaches strongly support that specimens from SWA known as Z. chilensis correspond to a different nominal species than those from SEP. Neohelice granulata provides an interesting animal model for studying behavioural process because it is widely distributed, ensuring variability related to different environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to analyse variation in site fidelity with relation to landscape heterogeneity. Field observations were carried out in three geographically distant marshes in Argentina (Mar Chiquita, San Antonio Oeste, and Riacho San José), which differ in their environmental characteristics and where crabs display different reproductive strategies. We analysed potential variation in burrow fidelity with relation to body size, sex and presence of vegetation (mudflat and saltmarsh) at all study sites. In addition, we analysed the influence of tidal flooding on fidelity in the Mar Chiquita saltmarsh. To achieve these goals, we used a mark-recapture method in which we tagged approximately 100 crabs during mid-summer for each zone at each site (a total of 668 crabs) for geographical comparison and approximately 370 crabs to evaluate the influence of tidal flooding. We found more faithful individuals in Mar Chiquita than in San Antonio Oeste and Riacho San José. For the San Antonio Oeste and Riacho San José populations and for Mar Chiquita previous to flooding samples we also found differences in site fidelity related to crab body size. At San Antonio Oeste and Riacho San José the relationship between size and proportion of faithful crabs was negative (smaller crabs were more faithful than larger crabs). In Mar Chiquita, a higher proportion of fidelity previous to flooding and a size-dependent response to flooding were detected, suggesting that fidelity may be modulated by tides having different effects on crabs with different body sizes. Equal proportions of males and females displaying site fidelity were observed at all study zones and sites. Our study suggests that N. granulata burrow fidelity behaviour changes with latitude and landscape (mudflat or saltmarsh) and can be sensitive to variables such as body size and frequency of flooding. Effects of contamination on aquatic organisms have been investigated and employed as biomarkers in environmental quality assessment for years. A commonly referenced aquatic organism, mollusks represent a group of major interest in toxicological studies. Both gastropods and bivalves have external mineral shells that protects their soft tissue from predation and desiccation. These structures are composed of an organic matrix and an inorganic matrix, both of which are affected by environmental changes, including exposure to hazardous chemicals. This literature review evaluates studies that propose mollusk shell alterations as biomarkers of aquatic system quality. The studies included herein show that changes to natural variables such as salinity, temperature, food availability, hydrodynamics, desiccation, predatory pressure, and substrate type may influence the form, structure, and composition of mollusk shells. However, in the spatial and temporal studies performed in coastal waters around the world, shells of organisms sampled from multi-impacted areas were found to differ in the form and composition of both organic and inorganic matrices relative to shells from less contaminated areas. Though these findings are useful, the toxicological studies were often performed in the field and were not able to attribute shell alterations to a specific molecule. It is known that the organic matrix of shells regulates the biomineralization process; proteomic analyses of shells may therefore elucidate how different contaminants affect shell biomineralization. Further research using approaches that allow a clearer distinction between shell alterations caused by natural variations and those caused by anthropogenic influence, as well as studies to identify which molecule is responsible for such alterations or to determine the ecological implications of shell alterations, are needed before any responses can be applied universally. Land-sea interface is an ecotone where the intersection of marine and terrestrial ecosystems create unique ecological conditions for terrestrial mobile species and freshwater-adapted organisms to exploit marine-derived food resources. Mammalian carnivores play an important role in almost any ecosystem where they live due to theirtop-down (or trophic cascade) effects on prey species and primary producers, thus structuring ecosystems along varied food-web pathways. We use camera trapping tostudy the patterns of coexistence, habitat use and activity pattern of carnivores speciesin a coastal area in southern Buenos Aires province, Argentina. We were able to detectfive of the seven species of Mammalian carnivores being the Pampas fox Lycalopexgymnocercus and Geoffroy´s cat Leopardus geoffroyi the two most common.Geoffroy´s cat seems to use more intensively those areas close to the shoreline, whilewe found little support of it for Pampas fox; which seems to use more inland areas.Congruently, we found evidence of a lack of spatial and, to a lower extent, temporalavoidance between the two most common carnivore species of our study area. Ourfindings support those previous studies indicating that the coastal dunes have animportant role in the conservation of the biodiversity of Buenos Aires province. Wildlifeconservation is compatible with carefully-designed ecotourism and limitedinfrastructure development and this may be a unique chance for the areas of BuenosAires coast that have not been affected yet by poorly planned, conservation-unfriendlyurbanization. Understanding processes driving patterns of species distribution anddiversity is one of the main objectives of community ecology. The aim of our study was to evaluate the spatial variation in assemblage compositionof stream-dwelling macroinvertebrates and identify which factors (e.g. water quality,land cover) are the most important drivers. We applied the elements of the metacommunity structure approach on a dataset of 38 communities from the Futaleufú basin in northwestern Patagonia. To better understandassemblage variation, we deconstructed our macroinvertebrate dataset into differenttaxonomic and trait groups. We then identified the most influential factors drivingcommunity composition using random forests. We found that half of our datasets (i.e. macroinvertebrate groups) exhibited a nestedstructure with clumped species loss, while the other half showed a quasi-nested patternwith either clumped or stochastic species loss. Overall, water quality was the most important driver of community variation,although climate, geography, and land cover were more or less relevant in particularcases. We found differences in the relative importance of the selected explanatoryvariables among datasets. This would suggest that different components of the macroinvertebratecommunity respond differently to environmental factors. Our findings could be of value for conservation planning, as they suggestthat preserving the most species-rich streams would, to some extent, guarantee theconservation of the entire species pool. Small water bodies are critical for maintaining freshwater biodiversity, but are among the least investigated of aquatic environments. We examined physical and chemical variables at two reaches in Arroyo Tambillos, a small, high-elevation Andean stream, across four seasons to examine how local factors and seasonality affected the structure of the macroinvertebrate community. The Arroyo Tambillos community was numerically dominated by ephemeropterans (mainly Massartellopsis irrazavali) while the dipteran Chironomidae were the most species rich. Total macroinvertebrate abundance washighest in summer, driven mainly by taxa that were secondary in dominance (Austrelmis sp. and Andesiops peruvianus), while richness did not differ between seasons. However, benthic composition was different in Fall 2013 (March) compared to other seasons, largely because of the increased abundance of Chironomidae. Canonical correspondence analysis discriminated Chironomidae species distributions in Fall 2013 by substrate type (i.e., big and small boulder substrate). By contrast, discharge, velocity, and depth were the variables which most affected the macroinvertebrate abundance and distributions. Contrary to our expectations, most community changes observed occurred in fall instead in summer. Nivo-kryal stream communities like the one described here have become increasingly important for conserving mountain stream biodiversity as anthropogentic impacts and climate change increasingly impact lower stream reaches. Durante varias campañas oceanográficas que realizó en la temporada 2016-2017 el buque oceanográfico Puerto Deseado, del Conicet, investigadores del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales recolectaron diversas especies de organismos de fondos marinos en las cercanías del banco Namuncurá-Burdwood, un área oceánica protegida situada a unos 150km al este de la isla de los Estados, Tierra del Fuego, y a unos 200km al sur de las Malvinas. Entre esas muestras, recogidas mediante distintas artes de pesca, estuvieron los dos protagonistas de esta historia: el caracol de espinas blandas proteicas Americominella longisetosa, que vive en profundidades de hasta 1250m frente a las costas argentinas y mide hasta 10cm de largo, y la esponja marina más común del Atlántico suroccidental, Mycale magellanica, que habita también en aguas antárticas. A histological survey of the commercially edible mussels Mytilus platensis and M. chilensis from wild and cultivated populations along the coast of Patagonia, Argentina (42°00’ to 54°47’S), was carried out to determine their health status. Diagnostic results included 3 types of inflammatory responses (infiltrative, nodular, and encapsulation), disseminated neoplasia disease, 2 abnormal reproductive conditions (gonadal atresia and intersex), prokaryotic inclusions, protozoans, and metazoans. Pathogen prevalence and infection intensity among mussels of different sampling sites and between those of wild and cultivated populations were compared. Inflammatory responses were recorded in all mussels from all sites, while disseminated neoplasia only occurred in the most southern cultivated M. chilensis. Intracellular prokaryotic inclusions were broadly distributed in the mussels from both northern and southern Patagonian coasts. Ciliates showed the highest prevalence among wild mussels from the colder waters of Bahía Brown. Turbellaria were recorded at higher prevalence in cultured mussels (41.7%), and trematode metacercariae occurred exclusively in intertidal wild mussels. None of the parasites found appears to be a problem to the fishery or farming, although disseminated neoplasia should be monitored. In addition, we found that mytilid species coexisting with M. platensis (Aulacomya atra and Perumytilus purpuratus) at one location shared the same pathological conditions and parasites, which differed from those of M. platensis at a distant locality. These results suggest that pathological conditions and parasites were influenced more by ecological habitat factors than by the species of mussels present, based on similar parasite assemblages found among closely related mytilid hosts in the same geographical area. Pseudopercis semifasciata is a demersal teleostean fish, endemic of the southwest Atlantic Ocean, inhabiting coastal waters from 23° S to 47° S. The present study has the purpose to analyse for the first time the maturitycycle and the reproductive effort of this species from samples collected in waters off Buenos Aires Province (Argentina).The evolution of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the pattern of gonad development showed that spawning in P. semifasciata occurs during the austral spring and early summer, with a main peak in November. Length at first maturity, estimated only for females, was 31.77 cm TL, and age at first maturity was 2.38 years.Batch fecundity was very low, ranging between 20,647 and 152,070 hydrated oocytes, and showed significantpositive relationships with total length, total weight and age. In contrast, relative fecundity (27 hydrated oocytes/g ± 12 hydrated oocytes/g) showed an opposite pattern: it decreased with total length, total weight, age and condition. The low fecundity values estimated for P. semifasciata, together with its low growth rate, make it necessary to consider these particular traits in the adoption of management strategies for sandperch fisheries, in order to preserve local populations of this species. The large branchiopod crustacean fauna (fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp and clam shrimp) of the Neotropical Bioregion are incompletely known, with scattered records for many taxa, and many new taxa discovered and described regularly. As an aid to furthering our knowledge of the group in this region, we present an assortment of notes and records on various Neotropical taxa. We present our information in the form of a checklist, listing all reported species, with a review of their known distribution, with 56 new distributional records for 29 taxa. We also include a revised description of Spiralifrons mira based on new material from Brazil, and provide important comments on the Leptestheriidae, reducing Strakrabiidae, Straskrabia, and Brtekia to synonymy. The information presented here will assist in additional studies, surveys, and conservation, as well as help develop a biogeographical understanding of this vast region. Ballast water has been identified as a leading vector for introduction of non-indigenous species. Recently, the International Maritime Organization implemented management standards—D-2—where all large, commercial ships trading internationally are required to adopt an approved treatment system using technologies such as ultraviolet radiation or chlorination. However, current management regulations are based only on the total abundance of viable taxa transported (i.e. total propagule pressure), largely ignoring species richness (i.e. colonization pressure). To determine the efficacy of chlorine treatment in reducing invasion risks and changes in transported biological communities inside ballast tanks, we used DNA metabarcoding-based approaches to estimate colonization pressure (here, the number of species/operational taxonomic units [OTUs] introduced) and relative propagule pressure (relative abundance of each species/OTU) of zooplankton communities in control and chlorine treated tanks during four transatlantic voyages. Our study demonstrated that transport itself did not significantly reduce colonization pressure of zooplankton species, nor did chlorine treatment. Chlorine treatment altered community structure by reducing relative propagule pressure of some taxa such as Mollusca and Rotifera, while increasing relative propagule pressure of some Oligohymenophorea and Copepoda species. Synthesis and applications. Chlorine treatment may not reduce invasion risks as much as previously thought. Reduction in total propagule pressure does not mean reduction in abundance of all species equally. While some taxa might experience drastically reduced abundance, others might not change at all or increase due to hatching from dormant stages initiated by chlorine exposure. Therefore, management strategies should consider changes in total propagule pressure and colonization pressure when forecasting risk of new invasions. We therefore recommend adopting new approaches, such as DNA metabarcoding-based methods, to assess the whole biodiversity discharged from ballast water. As species responses to chlorine treatment are variable and affected by concentration, we also recommend a combination of different technologies to reduce introduction risks of aquatic organisms. Patterns of endemism in marine researches have been traditionally inferred from approaches ignoring the spatial component of endemism of such patterns. In this contribution, we used a method based on an optimality criterion that evaluates the spatial congruence among the distribution of different taxa and provides a value of endemicity to a given area regardless of how that it was hypothesized. This method has been widely applied to land environments, whereas in the sea it has not been well explored yet. We analyzed the geographic distribution of three crustacean groups (Amphipoda, Copepoda, and Euphausiacea) to search for areas of endemism (AEs) in the Magellan region by applying an optimality algorithm. To summarize among numerous resulting AEs, we employed a meta-consensus criterion based on a clustering analysis. We identified three main AEs and, into most of them, we recognized smaller areas for the first time: Chiloé, Atlantic coast (with a smaller area in San Jorge Gulf and Cape Blanco), and Fueguia (Channels and Fjords, Malvinas/Falklands, Burdwood Bank, and South-West Atlantic transition area). Both Atlantic coast and Fueguia do not strictly match the provinces previously defined in the literature. Our study lays the foundation for a biogeographic scheme into the Magellan region and provides new insights on zones currently placed in marine protected areas for the southern tip of South America, such as Burdwood Bank, Yaganes, and Diego Ramírez-Drake Passage. Individuals of Mytilus platensis were exposed to Alexandrium catenella to evaluate the accumulation and metabolization of paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) over a period of 25 days. Mussels were collected from the intertidal zone of Cerro Avanzado, Argentine Patagonia. After 16 days, the toxins in the tissues of mussels were detected by the methods of mouse bioassay and high performance liquid chromatography with fluorometric detection (HPLC-FDL). The accumulation kinetics of PST toxins in M. platensis fed with A. catenella fitted to a linear function, in which the accumulation rate was 31.2 µg STX eq kg−1 day−1. After 16 days, the PST toxin level in tissues of mussels reached 1178 µg STX eq kg−1 exceeding the safety limit for human consumption (800 µg STX eq kg−1 tissue), whereas the highest PST toxin level was reached at the end of the experimentation (1613 µg STX eq kg−1) at 25 days. Differences in the toxin profile of the dinoflagellates and the tissues of the mussels confirmed biotransformation of PST in the mussel digestive system. The toxin profile of M. platensis was dominated by the gonyautoxins GTX1 and GTX4, while the toxin profile of A. catenella was dominated by the N-sulfocarbamoyl toxin C2. To our knowledge, this is the first experimentation on a laboratory scale of PST toxins accumulation in M. platensis with a native strain of A. catenella of Argentine Patagonia. Global-change stressors act under different timing, implying complexity and uncertainty in the study of interactive effects of multiple factors on planktonic communities. We manipulated three types of stressors acting in different time frames in an in situ experiment: ultraviolet radiation (UVR); phosphorus (P) concentration; temperature (T) in an oligotrophic Mediterranean high-mountain lake. The aim was to examine how the sensitivity of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton to UVR and their trophic relationship change under nutrient acclimation and abrupt temperature shifts. Phytoplankton and bacteria showed a common pattern of metabolic response to UVR × P addition interaction, with an increase in their production rates, although evidencing an inhibitory UVR effect on primary production (PP) but stimulatory on bacterial production (HBP). An abrupt T shift in plankton acclimated to UVR and P addition decreased the values of PP, evidencing an inhibitory UVR effect, whereas warming increased HBP and eliminated the UVR effect. The weakening of commensalistic and predatory relationship between phyto- and bacterioplankton under all experimental conditions denotes the negative effects of present and future global-change conditions on planktonic food webs towards impairing C flux within the microbial loop. Siphonariids are pulmonate gastropods inhabiting rocky intertidal habitats, and many studies have focused on these false limpets around the world. In the southern South Atlantic, studies on reproduction and development in species of Siphonaria are scarce. We studied the embryonic development and egg masses of Siphonaria lateralis at its northernmost distribution in Atlantic Patagonia. In S. lateralis, as in most species of Siphonaria, individuals spawn benthic egg masses that strongly attach to intertidal rocky substrata. A single spherical egg that measures ~120 µm develops inside the egg capsule of S. lateralis. Considering the relatively small egg size, and reports from previous studies, the developmental modality of S. lateralis might be expected to include a planktotrophic larval phase. However, we found that hatchlings emerged as 1-mm crawling juveniles, probably owing to the presence of intracapsular fluid, which may provide the energetic requirements for direct development. The embryonic size changed little from the egg to veliger stages, and then increased rapidly until the hatchling stage. We compared development in S. lateralis with development in the sympatric Siphonaria lessonii, in which egg size was reported to be ~80 µm and hatching occurs as planktotrophic veliger larvae. In these two species, spawn and early intracapsular developmental modes are remarkably different; these differences represent contrasting ways to survive in the harsh and physically stressful intertidal Patagonian coasts. The present study reported the effect of natural and anthropic environmental variables on the fish assemblages in the pampean streams, in the coastal strip along the Río de la Plata, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Five streams were sampled at 12 sites surrounded by land devoted to different uses. A correspondence analysis sorted the streams into two groups: a less impacted group formed by sites surrounded by livestock- raising pastures and a more impacted one passing through urban sites and including a stream adjacent to a modest rural urbanization with a dairy in the stream’s basin. The nutrient concentrations were significantly higher in the more impacted group; with species richness, diversity, abundance, and biomass being significantly lower. A canonical-correspondence analysis linked the more impacted sites to high concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus and impoverished fish assemblages, composed of species tolerant to environmental pollution. On the other hand, sites with higher oxygen concentrations and pH were related to richer assemblages pointing to good environmental conditions at the sites surrounded by livestock-raising pastures. Long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) are among the few odontocetes that show an anti-tropical distribution. The North Atlantic subspecies (G. m. melas, Traill 1809) has been widely studied in the east and west coast, but there is little previous information on the Southern subspecies (G. m. edwardii, A. Smith 1834). Here we investigated the skull morphometry of both populations, subspecies status nowadays, with the aim of characterizing and comparing them. We examined a total of 93 adult skulls. In all skulls, 21 measurements were analyzed. Our results clearly differentiated skull morphology between long-finned pilot whale subspecies, being the following characters the most important in the discrimination: width of rostrum at base, and at ¼, ½ and ¾ length, length of rostrum to internal and external nares, and length and height of temporal fossa. Overall, G. m. edwardii specimens showed a longer skull, larger rostrum, wider nares, larger temporal fossa and longer orbits than G. m. melas. We suggest that these strong dissimilarities might have functional implications for feeding habits, diving behaviour and sound production capabilities. The abundance of certain spionid speciescan be closely linked to environmental disturbancesproducing quantifiable changes in community structure.We hypothesize that in stress conditions, thespionids would tend to localize in the upper level ofthe sedimentary column near to the sediment?waterinterface. The aim of this work was to analyze, throughan ex situ experiment, the effect produced by twoconcentrations of crude oil on the spionids at differentdepths of the sedimentary column and identifypossible pollution indicators. A simulated oil spill attwo input levels was carried out in the laboratory for30 days. The effect of the adding of crude oil wassignificant only in the superior level of the sedimentarycolumn. The differences in the abundancebetween levels by experimental conditions weresignificant in all the cases. Sensitive species likeScolelepis (Parascolelepis) sp. and Rhynchospio glutaeadisappeared while other species like Boccardiaproboscidea had a higher resistance to the addition ofcrude oil. This study constitutes the first characterizationof spionid assemblages of the Patagonian coastsaltered by crude oil in sediments, and the firstidentification of species, which can be useful pollutionindicators. The Patagonian seabass Acanthistius patachonicus (Jenyns, 1840) (Serranidae) is a marine fish valued for commercial and sport fisheries from Argentina. We report a new myxosporean (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) infecting the urinary system of the Patagonian seabass from San Antonio Bay, San Matías Gulf, on the Atlantic Ocean. The mature myxospores were subspherical, 8.2–11.0 μm × 7.9–11.0 μm and 7.7–9.0 μm in thickness; two subspherical polar capsules, 2.4–3.8 μm × 2.3–3.6 μm, with 3 to 4 turns of the polar tubule; openings on different valves in almost opposite directions. Ornamented shell valves exhibited 17–20 concentrically organized surface ridges. SSU rDNA phylogenetics analyses placed the new species in the freshwater urinary tract clade, clustering in a clade formed by Myxobilatus gasterostei (Parisi, 1912), Acauda hoffmani Whipps, 2011, and other Ortholinea spp. Based on spore morphology, site of infection, and molecular data, we described this myxozoan as Ortholinea concentrica n. sp. The presence of epizoic diatoms on the skin of a variety of large marine vertebrates, such as whales and dolphins, has been often reported in the scientific literature. The first observations of an algal growth over on the skin of cetaceans were probably made around 1920. Later studies showed the presence of a new species, Cocconeis ceticola, on skin samples. Morphological features of this species led to the transference of C. ceticola, together with related forms, to the new genus Bennettella Holmes. Here, we report the occurrence of a diatom film of Bennettella ceticola on the skin of the Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei), obtained from bycatch in fishermen’s gillnets at Samborombon Bay, Argentina, in April 2005. For comparison the holotype of B. ceticola, deposited in the Natural History Museum (London, U.K.) dated 1920 and labelled as Cocconeis ceticola was examined. Detailed analysis of the fine structure of B. ceticola shows that it mostly matches the original description. However, the external raphe ending is not bifurcated (as originally described), and has only one simple, parallel sided slit and polar fissures hidden by a triangular flange. The triangular flange is the main diagnostic feature distinguishing Bennettella from Epipellis Holmes and Cocconeis Ehrenberg, allowing us to propose an emended description of Bennettella. The taxonomic affinities of B. ceticola with related genera, such as Cocconeis and Epipellis, are discussed. The present study constitutes the first report of B. ceticola as an epizoic diatom of a cetacean species in waters of the Argentinean Sea. Fil: Ferrario, Martha Elba. Sarcothalia crispata is a carrageenophytic red alga from South America. The gametophytes produce kappa/iota carrageenan and the tetrasporophytes, lambda carrageenan, each with different properties and uses. The aims of this study were to determine the most effective method for obtaining S. crispata carpospores and tetraspores from southern Argentina, to evaluate the germination process of these spores, and to assess their survival and growth on different substrates. Desiccation, osmotic shock, low temperature, and spontaneous discharge were tested in the laboratory as spore release methods. The settlement and growth of sporelings were assessed on glass, ropes, shells, and gravel. No differences were found among induction methods, obtaining a higher output of tetraspores per frond area than of carpospores. After 3 months, shells and gravel showed the highest densities of carposporelings and tetrasporelings, while the lowest were observed on ropes and glass, respectively. Carposporeling survival varied between 88% on gravel and 13% on ropes; for tetrasporelings, mean survival was 5%. Sporelings attained the largest basal discs and longest erect portions on glass, and the smallest and shortest ones on ropes, those on shells and gravel being of intermediate in size. Based on these results, it can be concluded that carpospores and tetraspores from S. crispata obtained by spontaneous discharge and inoculated on shells and gravel will result in good densities, allowing germlings to develop and grow. This is the first study on reproductive aspects of S. crispata from the southwestern Atlantic coast, presenting valuable information for reliably initiating specific spore cultures. Obtaining this specific raw material separately for the extraction of kappa/iota or lambda carrageenan would lead to a better management of the resource by the carrageenan industry. The potential for using suspended mesh-bags for larval/juvenile southern king crab (Lithodes santolla) aquaculture was assessed. Three early stages (Zoea, Megalopa and first juvenile, or C1) were confined for 45–65 days in mesh-bags near the sea-bottom. As L. santolla starts feeding when it reaches the first juvenile stage, the effect of biofouling presence was also tested in the C1 culture. Extreme vulnerability of the first larval stage was observed, as no live larvae were recovered when Z1 were used as seeds. On the other hand, survival of Megalopa and C1 reached 19.76 ± 1.08 and 30.00 ± 3.50%, respectively, and both C1 juvenile survival and growth were enhanced significantly by the presence of biofouling on the bags. These results indicate that suspended mesh-bags have potential for L. santolla juvenile culture in the sea. We suggest a 2-step culture process: indoor culturing of the three Zoea stages, and subsequently sea culture starting at the Megalopa stage. Once Megalopa molt to the C1 stage in the field, the already fouled culture system (mesh-bags) would allow newly molted crabs to feed. Further research should be directed towards sea culture optimization, including feeding requirements for bigger crabs, to implement a future stock enhancement program for king crabs in the Beagle Channel. PAHs are persistent pollutants released into the environment by fossil fuels burning and leak during petroleum operations. Associated with suspended particles upon entering marine ecosystem are accumulated by benthic fauna. Human exposure occurs mainly from ingestion such as gastropods consumption. The objective was to determine PAHs in sediments and in the marine gastropod Buccinanops globulosus in sites with different maritime and urban influences. In sampling sites located 20 km from the harbor, PAHs were non-detected; while in harbor gastropods, the level of PAH4 was exceeded according to international normative. Level of dibenzo[a,h]anthracene in sediments was between the ISQG and PEL. Since these are the first results of PAHs in edible gastropods in South America, we concluded that PAHs can be dangerous for consumers according to ingestion frequency. Integrative studies are necessary to evaluate the interaction among pollutants in maritime areas and the incidence in human health due to shellfish consumption. Fil: Primost, Monica Angelina. The Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi represents the dominant demersal fish and one of the main fisheries in the Argentine Sea. We analyzed over 17 years (September 1997–February 2015) of satellite surface chlorophyll concentration (CHL) and sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) data in the main spawning (SUB) and nursery (SJG) areas of the Patagonian stock of M. hubbsi. The variability observed in these environmental conditions was related to interannual differences in the reproductive success of hake. CHL values were maximum during austral spring (October–November) and minimum during winter (June–August). Blooms started in late September and lasted on average 128 and 110 days at SUB and SJG, respectively. At SUB, average CHL at the time of reproduction, the day of occurrence of the maximum chlorophyll concentration, and fall SST anomalies were significantly related to recruitment (RVPA) a year later and to two Larval Survival Indices (LSISSB and LSITEP) considered. At SJG, RVPA, LSISSB, and LSITEP showed negative correlations with fall (March–May) SSTA. Total egg production was not related to fall SSTA or spring phytoplankton dynamics at SUB or SJG. Significant positive trends were observed in the time series of CHL and SSTA in the study area. The trends observed in CHL represent average increases of 40.7% and 35.7% since 1997 at SUB and SJG, respectively. Microphytobenthos can be defined as the assemblage of microscopic, photosynthetic eukaryotic microalgae and cyanobacteria that live on sediment surfaces in salt marshes, submerged aquatic vegetation beds, intertidal sand and mudflats, and subtidal, illuminated sediments (MacIntyre et al., 1996; Miller et al., 1996). These microorganisms produce macroscopically recognizable microbial mats dominated by cyanobacteria and biofilms of epipelic diatoms, these structures are the result of sediment trapping, binding and precipitation by the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by the microorganisms (de Winder et al., 1999). Histological characterization of the hermaphroditic gonad (HG) and seasonality of gametogenesis were investigated in a population of Siphonaria lessonii from the coast of Buenos Aires Province (37°16′S, 56°58′W). Monthly analysis of the frequency of gametogenic stages, as well as the number and mean size of oocytes, were used to determine reproductive events over a 2-year period (June 2012–May 2014). Female and male gametes were observed simultaneously within acini of adult individuals and continuously throughout the period studied. Oogenesis commenced in the beginning of austral autumn, with gonads characterized mainly by proliferation of female cells. From this moment, oocytes gradually increased in number and area until spring, when a large number of individuals were found in the evacuation stage. The same trend was observed from early gonad maturation to advanced stages, indicating that gonad development was closely related to the frequency of oocyte stages and to the area (size) of oocytes. Spermatogenesis was also observed as a continuous process throughout the year, although spent acini were more frequent from November until February. Temporal variation of the population dynamics of the medusae and ctenophores (gelatinous zooplankton) is described over an annual cycle in the Mar del Plata Harbor, Argentina. A total of 18 species was identified, three of which were ctenophores (two of Class Tentaculata and one of Nuda) and 15 medusae (14 of Class Hydrozoa and one of Scyphozoa). A species of hydromedusae, Annatiara affinis, was observed for the first time in the Argentine Sea. In both groups, species richness and abundances showed clear seasonality, with the lowest values in the cold period (austral autumn-winter) and the highest values in the warm period (spring-summer). The meroplanktonic medusae Obelia sp. and Eucheilota ventricularis as well as the holoplanktonic Liriope tetraphylla represented 94.2% of the total abundances of this group (classified as dominant). In the ctenophores, the dominant species were Pleurobrachia pileus and Mnemiopsis leidyi, which accounted for 99.3% of the ctenophores. Monthly medusae succession indicated that holoplanktonic species were dominant over practically all the annual cycle in terms of abundance, while considering species richness values, meroplanktonic species dominated. Ctenophores (considering abundance values) was displayed alternating periods of approximately three months of dominance between P. pileus and M. leidyi. The Bray-Curtis similarity index performed on medusae identified two groups of seasons with faunal affinity, the 1) cold and 2) warm periods, with the water temperature and non-gelatinous zooplankton abundances as the environmental factors that best explained this variability (BIO-ENV analysis), while for ctenophores, temporal faunal homogeneity was observed and a single group with faunal affinity was identified. Se describe la variación estacional de la dinámica poblacional de las medusas y ctenóforos (zooplancton gelatinoso) a lo largo de un ciclo anual en el puerto de Mar del Plata, Argentina. Se identificaron un total de 18 especies, de las cuales 3 fueron ctenóforos (2 de la clase Tentaculata y 1 de Nuda) y 15 medusas (14 de la clase Hydrozoa y 1 de Scyphozoa). La hidromedusa Annatiara affinis representó un nuevo registro para el Mar Argentino. En ambas agrupaciones, la riqueza específica y las abundancias mostraron los valores más bajos en el período frío (otoño-invierno austral) y los más altos en el período cálido (primavera-verano). Las medusas meroplanctónicas Obelia sp. y Eucheilota ventricularis, así como la holoplactónica Liriope tetraphylla, representaron el 94.2% del total de las abundancias de este grupo (clasificadas como dominantes). En los ctenóforos, las especies dominantes fueron Pleurobrachia pileus y Mnemiopsis leidyi, que representaron el 99.3%. La sucesión mensual en las medusas indicó que las especies holoplanctónicas fueron dominantes casi en todo el ciclo anual en términos de abundancia, mientras que, sobre la base del número de especies, las meroplanctónicas presentaron valores mayores. En los ctenóforos (considerando sus abundancias), se observaron períodos intercalados de ~3 meses de dominancia entre M. leidyi y P. pileus. El índice de Bray-Curtis aplicado a las medusas identificó la presencia de dos agrupaciones de estaciones climáticas con afinidad faunística: 1) frío y 2) cálido; los factores ambientales que mejor explicaron dicha variabilidad fueron la temperatura del agua y las abundancias del zooplancton no gelatinoso (análisis BIO-ENV). La centolla, Lithodes santolla, experimenta bajas temperaturas, condiciones de alimentación impredecibles y distintas presiones pesqueras. Para comparar la inversión reproductiva de las hembras, se capturaron centollas de tres sitios (Canal Beagle 55°S, Costa Atlántica de Tierra del Fuego 52-54°S y Golfo San Jorge 45-47°S). Se midió la fecundidad, y el contenido de agua y lípidos en la glándula digestiva, ovario y músculo. Para comparar el aporte materno a la descendencia, se determinó el contenido de lípidos, proteínas, agua y materia inorgánica en la masa de huevos, el volumen del huevo y el tamaño del embrión. Aunque la fecundidad fue similar entre sitios, las hembras del Golfo San Jorge mostraron mayor contenido de agua y lípidos en los órganos somáticos y reproductivos. Las reservas energéticas de la masa de huevos variaron entre sitios, mostrando los mayores valores de lípidos en Canal Beagle y de proteínas y materia inorgánica en el Golfo San Jorge. Aunque el contenido de agua en el huevo fue similar, su volumen y el tamaño del embrión fueron mayores en el Golfo San Jorge. Además, el tamaño materno no se correlacionó con el volumen del huevo, el tamaño del embrión, ni con el contenido de lípidos, proteínas y materia inorgánica de los huevos. Este estudio sugiere que la inversión reproductiva de L. santolla varía entre regiones expuestas a diferentes condiciones ambientales, como la calidad de alimentos disponibles, lo cual denota un mecanismo compensatorio en las hembras. The southern king crab Lithodes santolla experiences low temperatures and unpredictable food conditions, and is under variable fishing pressure. To compare the reproductive investment of females, crabs were captured from three sites (Beagle Channel 55°S, Tierra del Fuego Atlantic coast 52-54°S and San Jorge Gulf 45-47°S). Fecundity, water and lipid contents were measured in midgut gland, ovary and muscle. To assess the maternal investment in the offspring, egg masses were analysed on lipid, protein, water and inorganic matter contents, egg volume and embryo size. Although fecundity was similar among sites, San Jorge Gulf females showed higher water and lower lipid contents in somatic and reproductive organs. The egg mass energy reserves varied among sites, showing the highest lipid values in the Beagle Channel, and the highest protein and inorganic matter content in San Jorge Gulf. Though water content was similar, egg volume and embryo size were higher in San Jorge Gulf. Moreover, maternal size did not correlate with egg volume, embryo size or lipid, protein and inorganic matter content of the eggs. This study suggests that reproductive investment of L. santolla varies among regions exposed to different environmental conditions, such as the quality of food available, denoting a female compensatory mechanism. In South America, the order Atheriniformes includes the monophyletic genus Odontesthes with 20 species that inhabit freshwater, estuarine and coastal environments. Pejerrey Odontesthes argentinensis is widely distributed in coastal and estuarine areas of the Atlantic Ocean and is known to foray into estuaries of river systems, particularly in conditions of elevated salinity. However, to our knowledge, a landlocked self‐sustaining population has never been recorded. In this study, we examined the pejerrey population of Salada de Pedro Luro Lake (south‐east of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) to clarify its taxonomic identity. An integrative taxonomic analysis based on traditional meristic, landmark‐based morphometrics and genetic techniques suggests that the Salada de Pedro Luro pejerrey population represents a novel case of physiological and morphological adaptation of a marine pejerrey species to a landlocked environment and emphasises the environmental plasticity of this group of fishes Fil: Colautti, Dario César.
