Because reactive oxygen species are involved in the regulation of biological rhythms, we hypothesized that intra-annual variability of seed progeny quality at low doses of ionizing radiation (LDIRs) would differ from that of background plants. We conducted 12 consecutive experiments using the roll culture method by germinating seeds (monthly for 3 weeks) of six herbaceous plant species (Bromus inermis, Geum aleppicum, Plantago major, Rumex confertus, Silene latifolia, and Taraxacum officinale) growing under conditions of chronic radiation in the East Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT). We assessed physiological (seed viability and abnormality frequency) and biochemical (low-molecular-weight antioxidants, LMWAs) parameters of seedlings. Total absorbed dose rates of maternal plants (TADRplants) and seed embryos (TADRseeds) in the EURT exceeded background levels by 1–3 and 1–2 orders of magnitude, respectively. Nonlinear dependencies on TADR were mainly characteristic of physiological and biochemical parameters. For most populations of the studied species (B. inermis, G. aleppicum, R. confertus, and S. latifolia), seedling survival and root length decreased in the autumn–winter period, while the frequency of abnormal seedlings increased. The content of LMWAs could be ranked as R. confertus > B. inermis > G. aleppicum > S. latifolia, in good agreement with the presence of anthocyanin pigmentation in the plants. The lowest synthesis of antioxidants in seedlings was observed in winter. A high LMWA content promoted growth and reduced the frequency of abnormal seedlings. These results underscore a multistage nature of the impact of LDIRs on intra-annual biological rhythms in plants. High heterogeneity in reference group 'wild grasses' and diversity of their radiobiological effects should help to develop methods of radiation protection for natural ecosystems and facilitate approaches used by the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Absorbed dose rates for six plant species in the East Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT) area range from 0.11 to 73.89 µGy h−s (plants) and 0.11 to 6.88 µGy h−s (seed embryos). Intra-annual rhythms of physiological and biochemical parameters in the EURT zone differ from those in background seedlings. It is known that social support is one of the main protective factors in the postpartum period. In addition, studies report the association between biological rhythm disruption and its consequences on health, especially mental, but little is known about the possible causes of this disruption. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the association between the perception of social support and the biological rhythm in women at three months postpartum in the city of Pelotas, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study nested within a population-based cohort study, using data from an assessment performed 90 to 120 days postpartum. The mother's perception of social support was assessed by the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS), while biological rhythm was measured by the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN). Sample composition was based on data from 755 women. After adjusting by linear regression for the potential confounders of schooling and economic class, all domains of social support (material support, affective support, emotional support, informational support and positive social interaction) remained negatively associated with biological rhythm (p < .001). Thus, regression analysis shows for each increment of one point in the domains of social support, there was a decrease between 0,160 and 0,189 points in the maternal biological rhythm. All domains of social support were associated with disruption of the biological rhythm, which reinforces the need for adequate support, especially in a period of many demands, for good maternal health.

The menstrual cycle of fertile female is regulated by multiple organs and hormones, controlling the reproductive health and fertility of females. This paper is dedicated to exploring how two negative feedback loops regulate and influence the dynamic behavior of the menstrual cycle. We simplified the regulation circuit of the menstrual cycle into a nonlinear differential equation with two time delays. This simplified mathematical model integrates the hypothalamus–pituitary–ovary primary negative feedback loop and the negative feedback auxiliary loop between the ovary and the pituitary. We investigated the delay-dependent conditions for the stability of the model’s equilibrium points and also demonstrated the presence of Hopf bifurcations. Theoretical analysis suggests that the primary feedback loop is the major factor driving oscillation in the system. Further numerical simulations indicate that the negative feedback auxiliary loop allows the system to adjust its amplitude while maintaining the robustness of the cycle length. Objective: To test the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the biological rhythms interview of assessment in neuropsychiatry (C-BRIAN) in a group of young adults with and without depressive symptoms. Methods: Three hundred and seventy-eight university students were recruited as participants. Based on the scores from Center for Epidemiological Survey Depression Scale (CES-D), students were divided into the depressed group and healthy group. Explorative factor analysis was applied to assess the construct validity of the C-BRIAN. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and CES-D were compared with the C-BRIAN to test the convergent validity. The internal consistency of the C-BRIAN was also examined. Results: Three factors were extracted (activities, eating patterns, and sleep factors) explaining 63.9% of the total variance. The internal consistencies were very good with a coefficient of 0.94 (overall) and 0.89--0.91 for three factors. The domains of activities, eating patterns, and sleep were moderately correlated with PSQI (r=0.579) and CES-D (r=0.559) (ps<0.01). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that C-BRIAN has good validity and reliability which can be used to assess the biological rhythm in the young adult population with depressive symptoms. The literature has extensively investigated potential factors influencing women’s performance, including the menstrual cycle and the circadian rhythm. However, review articles exploring the combined influence of both factors remain lacking in the literature. The study aimed to systematically review the literature on the relationship between the circadian rhythm and menstrual cycle on physical performance in women. The review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The search was performed on the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Google Scholar databases. Of the 1205 records identified, four articles met the inclusion criteria. From four articles, two studies found a significant interaction between the time of day and phase of the menstrual cycle with physical performance. The isometric strength increased in the afternoon in the mid-luteal phase (versus the morning in the midluteal phase, p < 0.05), and the maximum cycling power was higher in the afternoon in the mid-follicular phase (versus the morning in the mid-follicular phase, p < 0.01). Our findings suggest that the time of day and the menstrual cycle phase affect physical performance, with the daytime potentially having a more significant influence. However, the results should be interpreted cautiously due to the limited studies and diverse methodologies used to monitor the menstrual cycle phase. This review reinforces the need for further investigation to understand better the combined effects of the circadian rhythm and menstrual cycle on women’s physical performance. Hexaconazole is a widely used and frequently detected fungicide which is also reported to be persistent in environment. The toxicity of Hex to non-organisms such as reproductive toxicity, endocrine disrupting toxicity, and carcinogenic toxicity had been reported. However, study on the Hex-induced neurotoxicity is rare and the mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, environmental related concentrations of Hex were chosen to investigate the effects of Hex on nervous system from the aspect of biological rhythm under 90 d sub-chronic exposure. The results showed that Hex significantly affected the cognitive function of rats resulting in the deterioration of learning and memory ability and induced oxidative stress in rat brain. Moreover, the notable changes of neurotransmitters in rat brain suggested the disorder of nerve signaling conduction induced by Hex. The influence of Hex on biological rhythm was further detected which showed that levels of rhythm regulatory genes and proteins significantly disturbed at four monitored time periods. Based on these results, it was supposed that the underlying mechanism of Hex-induced cognitive dysfunction might through oxidative stress pathway. Our findings could systematically and comprehensively clarify the effects of Hex on nervous system and were helpful for prevention neurological diseases induced by triazole pesticides.

Abstract Background Although the disturbance of circadian rhythms represents a significant clinical feature of major depressive disorder (MDD), the relationship between biological rhythm disturbances and the severity of suicidal ideation in individuals with MDD remains unclear. We aimed to explore the characteristics of different biological rhythm dimensions in MDD and their association with the severity of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Methods A total of 50 MDD patients and 50 healthy controls were recruited and their general information was collected. The severity of depressive symptoms was assessed with the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS17). The intensity of suicidal ideation was evaluated with the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSS). The Chinese version of the Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN) scale was utilized to assess the participants’ biological rhythm dysregulation. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between biological rhythm and the risk of MDD. The study aimed to characterize the daily vaginal temperature pattern of captive red deer (Cervus elaphus). Ten adult female red deer received a vaginal implantation of an automatic temperature recorder (iButton®) attached to a CIDR-G device. The ambient and black bulb temperature, sunrise and sunset times were also registered. The daily vaginal temperature exhibited a significant rhythmic pattern (p < 0.05), with a mesor of 38.8 °C and an amplitude of 0.40 °C. During the diurnal phase, increasing vaginal temperature values were observed, while during the nocturnal phase, decreasing values were recorded. The bathyphase and the acrophase were recorded at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, respectively. The vaginal temperature exhibited a positive correlation with the ambient (r = 0.80, r2 = 0.64) and black bulb temperature (r = 0.40, p < 0.05). In concludsion the vaginal temperature of red deer exhibited a nychthemeral pattern, with increasing values during the diurnal phase and decreasing values during the nocturnal phase. The disruption of biological rhythm (sleep, eating patterns, hormonal secretions, activities, and social life etc.) in individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder makes it challenging to balance the mood of the patient and facilitates recurrence. Although social support, coping with stress, and medication adherence are known to affect prognosis, no study has been found to investigate the relationship between these factors and biological rhythm. This descriptive and correlational design study investigated the relationship between perceived social support, coping styles and medication adherence, and biological rhythm in individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This study was conducted with 111 patients receiving treatment in the outpatient clinics of the psychiatry department of two public hospitals in Ankara, Turkey. Biological Rhythm Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Coping Style Inventory (CSI), and Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) were used for data collection. The biological rhythm total and subscales scores were significantly and negatively related to perceived social support total, and subscales scores (p < 0.005). The biological rhythm total and most of its subscales scores were significantly and negatively related to medication adherence (p < 0.005). The biological rhythm total and domain scores were significantly and negatively related to seeking social support, self-confident, and optimistic subscales of CSI while significantly and positively related to helpless and submissive (p < 0.005). In this study, a positive relationship was found between increased perceived social support, effective coping with stress, and adherence to medication. The menstrual cycle is one of the most fundamental differences between men and women and is capable of influencing the performance, well-being and health of female athletes. Despite increasing research, the influence of the menstrual cycle on athletic performance is still largely a mystery and highly individual. This in turn increases the importance of effective communication between coaches and female athletes. The purpose of this study is to analyse the existing communication behaviour of coaches as perceived by female athletes, as well as their willingness to communicate about the menstrual cycle. Therefore, we developed an online questionnaire addressed to female sports club athletes (n = 1195). Questions about the coach's thematisation of the menstrual cycle and the female athlete's willingness to communicate served as dependent variables. Ordinary least squares regressions were conducted for both dependent constructs. We found that communication behaviour depends on coaches' age, type of sport and training frequency. Communication willingness depends on the gender of the coach, athletes' age, type of sport, training frequency and perception of cycle-related performance fluctuations. Overall, the results of our study also show a large gap between desire and reality-even in 2022 coaches rarely talk about the menstrual cycle, although a large proportion of female athletes would be willing to do so. Both coaches and athletes should be empowered to communicate more openly about menstrual cycle. Improving communication skills on both sides may also improve the coach-athlete relationship. In patients with MDD, linear regression analysis demonstrated a positive relationship between BSS scores and BRIAN eating pattern scores (β = 0.34, P = 0.022), even after adjusting for demographic factors and the severity of depression. Conclusions: Patients with MDD exhibited significantly higher levels of dysregulation in all four biological rhythm dimensions compared to healthy controls and the degree of dysregulation was associated with the severity of depression. BackgroundBlood glucose and insulin exhibit coordinated daily and hourly rhythms in people without diabetes (nonT1D). Although the presence and stability of these rhythms are associated with euglycemia, it is unknown if they (1) are preserved in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and (2) vary by therapy type. In particular, Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) systems improve glycemia in T1D compared to Sensor Augmented Pump (SAP) therapies, but the extent to which either recapitulates coupled glucose and insulin rhythmicity is not well described. In HCL systems, more rapid modulation of glucose via automated insulin delivery may result in greater rhythmic coordination and euglycemia. Such precision may not be possible in SAP systems. We hypothesized that HCL users would exhibit fewer hyperglycemic event, superior rhythmicity, and coordination relative to SAP users.MethodsWavelet and coherence analyses were used to compare glucose and insulin delivery rate (IDR) within-day and daily rhythms, and their coordination, in 3 datasets: HCL (n = 150), SAP (n = 89), and nonT1D glucose (n = 16).ResultsGlycemia, correlation between normalized glucose and IDR, daily coherence of glucose and IDR, and amplitude of glucose oscillations differed significantly between SAP and HCL users. Daily glucose rhythms differed significantly between SAP, but not HCL, users and nonT1D individuals.ConclusionsSAP use is associated with greater hyperglycemia, higher amplitude glucose fluctuations, and a less stably coordinated rhythmic phenotype compared to HCL use. Improvements in glucose and IDR rhythmicity may contribute to the overall effectiveness of HCL systems.

Abstract Objectives To determine whether smoking and drinking moderate the correlation between biological rhythm and mental health and the role of gender differences in these moderating effects. Methods Adolescents from three cities, all twelve middle schools (N = 7,986), named Shenzhen, Nanchang and Shenyang in China, were asked to complete a standardized questionnaire including the details of biological rhythm, psychological health, and the status of smoking and drinking. The PROCESS program was used to analyze whether smoking and drinking moderated the relationship between biological rhythm and psychological health. The term methylation has been defined and redefined by various scientists in the last fifty years. There is always huge excitement around this field because the inheritance of something is beyond its DNA sequence. Advanced gene methylation studies have redefined molecular genetics and these tools are considered de novo in alleviating challenges of animal disease and production. Recent emerging evidence has shown that the impact of DNA, RNA, and protein methylation is crucial for embryonic development, cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and phenotype production. Currently, many researchers are focusing their work on methylation to understand its significant role in expression, disease-resistant traits, productivity, and longevity. Changes in the activity of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system are responsible for a stable shift in the regulation of the cardiovascular system in essential hypertension (EH). They can be characterized as hemodynamic allostasis. The purpose of our study was to determine the role of hemodynamic parameters in allostatic load in patients with EH without metabolic syndrome. Twenty-four hours of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed, followed by linear and non-linear rhythm analysis. Based on the daily index, patients with EH were divided into two groups: group 1—patients with no significant nighttime decrease in blood pressure (BP); group 2—patients who had a nocturnal decrease in BP. The control group included healthy persons aged 25 to 69 years. A linear analysis was used to determine the mean values of systolic and diastolic BP, heart rate (HR), time load of BP, circadian index, and structural point of BP. Non-linear analysis was applied to determine the mesor, amplitude, range of oscillations and % rhythm of BP and HR. The allostatic load index (ALI) was also calculated on the basis of the corresponding biomarkers. The "theory of imbalance of the essence and tendon" is an innovative theory proposed by our team that is based on the academic ideas of Chinese medicine master Tang Youzhi and famous master Zhuang Zengyuan and combines years of clinical experience. "Essence" includes both innate essence and the essence of the five zang-organs and six fu-organs required for postnatal growth and development, respectively. "Tendon" refers to a complex of nerves, soft tissue, and connective tissue, which not only has characteristic features but also functions such as connection, support, nutrition, and protection. The reason why the eye can see things is that essence is its material foundation, and tendon is the functional guarantee. During the occurrence and development of myopia, the "imbalance of the essence and tendon" runs through the entire process and is the core link in the occurrence and development of myopia. The word "imbalance" not only includes the disruption of the steady state of the essence and tendon, but also carries the connotation of biological rhythm imbalance. Modern research suggests that biological rhythms play an important role in the occurrence and development of myopia. This article explores the relationship between the imbalance of essence and tendon and biological rhythms based on the "theory of imbalance of essence and tendon" and preliminarily proposes that the main treatment method for treating myopia is to replenish essence, soften tendon, benefit the head, and regulate the rhythm. Guiding the treatment of myopia with the "theory of imbalance of essence and tendon" helps to deeply understand the etiology and pathogenesis of myopia and broaden clinical diagnosis and treatment ideas. The biological rhythm is regulated through endogenous circadian clock and synchronizes with photoperiodic signal in an environmental light-dark cycle. The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) containing clock genes acts as a 'time keeper' of the rhythmic functions as the environmental signal perceives through retino-hypothalamic tract and coordinates with oscillators present in almost all organs throughout the body. This coordination with external environment is governed by neuronal and hormonal cues. The pineal hormone melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is synthesized rhythmically in all vertebrates with a peak during dark phase and nadir during light phase. It is considered as a 'hormone of darkness' involved primarily in maintaining the zeitgeber in the central and peripheral clocks. Melatonin regulates gonadal growth and maturation in fish by acting directly and/or on hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Exogenous administration of melatonin and/or altered photoperiods has a significant impact on the functions of gonads depending on the reproductive status of several fish species, particularly in carp. Seasonal fluctuations of ovarian melatonin concentration, high during the spawning season and a sharp decline during the post-spawning, in an annual reproductive cycle in female carp also suggested its involvement in the oocyte development. The hormone activates the structural components of maturation promoting factor (MPF), cyclin B and Cdc2, to promote germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD). Melatonin also up-regulates several antioxidative enzymes in fish ovary and reduces oxidative stress to augment the spawning process. Methods: Adolescents from three cities, all twelve middle schools (N = 7,986), named Shenzhen, Nanchang and Shenyang in China, were asked to complete a standardized questionnaire including the details of biological rhythm, psychological health, and the status of smoking and drinking. The PROCESS program was used to analyze whether smoking and drinking moderated the relationship between biological rhythm and psychological health. Results: The analyses revealed poorer psychological health and greater likelihood of smoking and drinking in participants with higher scores for biological rhythm disorder (P < 0.001). Specifically, smoking and drinking accelerated the relationship between biological rhythm and psychological health in the total sample (B = 0.05, P < 0.05; B = 0.06, P < 0.001) and only the subgroup of girls (B = 0.09, P < 0.05; B = 0.12, P < 0.001), respectively. Conclusions: As the findings suggest, attention should be given to smoking, drinking and gender-specific approaches employed to alleviate the psychological disorders of adolescents with biological rhythm disorders. Background: Dart sport has become a sport that has recently become widespread among sports branches and its popularity is increasing rapidly day by day. With this popularization, research on darts is increasing. It is stated that athletes can do the training they do at any time of the day with a much better performance at a different time, as in many changing conditions. In addition, at a different time of day, fatigue may be reached later or recovery may occur more quickly. For these reasons, knowing the effect of training at different times of the day is important for both the coach and the athlete. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different times of the day on throwing performance in darts, an indoor skill in which focus, attention, concentration are at the forefront and environmental factors are less effective than outdoor skill. Methods: In this study, 16 dart athletes (8 boys, 8 girls) with a sport age of 2 - 3 years and an age of 12 - 14 years, who did not have any health problems in Mardin province, participated voluntarily: 2 m and 2.37 m from two different distances at 8.00 and 17.00, 1 day apart. Before the dart throws, the Daily Rhythm Determination Scale for Children was administered to the participants. The center of the dartboard was placed at eye level for each subject. After the throws, the Perceived Difficulty Scale was applied. In the analysis examining the relationship between perceived degree of difficulty, morningness-eveningness and throwing, the subjects' evening throwing scores and evening perceived degree of difficulty scores were examined; a negative and significant relationship was observed in the eveningist group (r = -1, P = 0.01). No significant relationship was observed in the morning group. Results: In the study, a statistically significant difference was found between the subjects' morning and evening throws at 2 m and 2.37 cm. In both morning and evening groups, it was determined that the throwing performance increased in the evening measurements. Conclusions: As a result, this study concluded that there is an effect of time of day in dart sport and that dart throws made in the evening give better results than dart throws made in the morning. Based on these results, it is recommended that a program should be made by the coaches considering the school programs and daily routines to reduce the effect of time of day. It is thought that this study will be important for chronobiological researches to reveal the factors affecting performance as well as the effect of time of day in darts sport. Abstract Background Despite the close relationship between sleep–wake cycles and depression symptoms, the relationship between sleep midpoint and depression symptoms in adults remains understudied. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 18280 adults aged ≥ 18 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015–2020 were analyzed. Covariates included age, sex, race/ethnicity, education level, marital status, family income, body mass index, smoking status, drinking status, physical activity, comorbid condition, sleep duration, and sleep disturbance were adjusted in multivariate regression models. Results Weighted restricted cubic spline based on the complex sampling design of NHANES showed that in participants with a sleep midpoint from 2:18 AM to 6:30 AM, the prevalence of depression symptoms increased by 0.2 times (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–1.33) per 1-h increment in sleep midpoint compared to the reference point of 2:18 AM. For participants with a sleep midpoint after 6:30 AM and before 2:18 AM the next day, the relationship between sleep midpoint and depression symptoms was not significant after adjusting for all covariates (adjusted OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.99–1.03). Sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm changes in bipolar disorder (BD) may have behavioral components as well as biological components. This study aimed to examine the relationship between personality traits, sleep and circadian rhythm in BD. A total of 150 participants with BD, and 150 healthy controls completed the Big Five Personality Test-50 (B5PT-50-TR), Biological Rhythm Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Young Mania Rating Scale and Beck Depression Inventory. In the BD group, B5PT-50-TR emotional stability and openness subscale scores were significantly lower in comparison with the healthy control group. Agreeableness and emotional stability subscales were covariates for the BRIAN sleep subscale and emotional stability was a covariate for PSQI total score. Emotional instability might be a vulnerability factor for sleep disorders and biological rhythm abnormalities in BD. Improvement in emotional instability may relieve sleep disorders and biological rhythm, thereby leading to better treatment outcomes in BD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Background Sleep bruxism (BS) is defined as involuntary jaw movements characterized by grinding and clenching teeth. Objective To verify the association between chronotype, sleep quality, and self-reporting of BS in dental students. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted with 214 undergraduate dental students at a public university in northeast Brazil. The participants answered the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire for the identification of chronotype and another questionnaire regarding daily aspects to collect information about sleep quality, self-reported sleep bruxism, the use of sleeping pills, snoring, concentration during daily activities and energy upon waking. Results The prevalence of self-reported sleep bruxism was 11.0%. In the final model, the eveningness chronotype (OR = 23.00; 95% CI: 2.36-223.84, p = 0.007), habitual snoring (OR = 3.12; 95% CI: 1.31-7.39, p = 0.01) and low energy upon waking in the morning (OR = 2.37; 95% CI: 1.96-5.58, p = 0.040) were associated with self-reported sleep bruxism. Conclusion The evening chronotype, presence of snoring, and low energy when waking up in the morning influenced self-reporting of sleep bruxism among undergraduate dental students.

Background: The interaction between oxidative status markers and biological rhythms is considered particularly important in the pathogenesis of many diseases and more effective therapies. We aimed to determine if the salivary secretion of myeloperoxidase exhibits diurnal variations, and if the potential daily variability differs seasonally. Methods: The study was performed in Poznan, Poland (52,25°N, 16,58°E) in 10 healthy male volunteers (age median 23.5 years). Whole mixed unstimulated saliva was collected in summer (August) and winter (December) during 36 h at 2-h intervals starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday and ending at 6 p.m. on Sunday, in the domestic setting. The samples were analysed for myeloperoxidase (MPO) and cortisol by immunoassays. The presence of the circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion in saliva confirmed the rhythmicity of the volunteers. Results: For salivary MPO, significantly higher concentrations compared to midnight and noon were observed for 4 a.m. in both summer and winter. Using the cosinor analysis, the variations in salivary MPO levels showed a moderate fit for the 12-h period rhythm (acrophases: in summer 05:37/17:37, in winter 06:16/18:16), without significant differences in the rhythm parameters in summer and winter. However, higher self-reported Global Seasonal Score (which may predispose to seasonal affective disorder) was associated with significantly stronger relative amplitude (RS = 0.811) in winter season only. Conclusions: In conclusion, our findings suggest the possible ultradian rhythm for MPO in saliva, with two peaks during the day, regardless of the season.

This study, it was aimed to evaluate the biological rhythms of those with methamphetamine use disorder and to examine the relationship of biological rhythm with depression and sleep quality. A total of 121 people (61 with methamphetamine use disorder, 60 healthy controls) participated in the study. Sociodemographic data forms, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) were administered for all patients and the healthy control group. Biological rhythm total scores of the patient group were higher than the control group (p <.001). When the correlation analyses were examined, r = 0.864 positive (p <.001) correlation was found between biological rhythm total scores and HAM-D; and r = 0.713 positive (p <.001) correlation between Pittsburgh total scores and biological rhythm total scores. According to the regression analysis, the total change in the biological rhythm total score level was 75.8, explained by the HAM-D total scores and Pittsburgh total scores (R2 = 0.758). Chronotherapies can be considered in the treatment of biological rhythm disorders in patients with methamphetamine use disorder. Abstract Background Circadian rhythm disorders (CRDs) are closely associated with the occurrence and development of various diseases, such as inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as tumors. The impact of a CRD on bodily health is a complex and comprehensive process, and its molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways are still unclear. We therefore aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism variation and adverse outcomes associated with CRDs in a prospective cohort of CRD cases and controls at term using multiomics data. The study has been tasked with developing a precise health promotion model for the prevention and management of CRDs. Methods This will be a 5-year prospective cohort study centered on the health management of individuals with CRDs. One hundred volunteers were recruited and had undergone baseline specimen collection, health examination, and health assessment. All of them will be followed up every year using the same protocol, and their biological specimens will be subjected to multiomics analysis after standardized processing. Discussion Longitudinal health examination, health assessment, and multiomics data will be analyzed to study the impact of CRDs on the volunteers’ health status. The results of this study will promote the development of targeted health management programs based on precision medicine. To investigate the effects of bonito oligopeptide SEP-3 on the repair of liver damage and regulation of liver biorhythm in sleep-deprived mice (SDM), C57BL/6 male mice were subjected to sleep deprivation by modified multi-platform water environment method, and were given different doses of bonito oligopeptide SEP-3 in groups. To determine the liver organ index, liver tissue-related apoptotic protein levels, Wnt/β-Catenin pathway-related protein expression levels, serum alanine transaminase (ALT), glutamicum transaminase (AST), glucocorticoid (GC), and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) content in each group of mice, four time points were selected to examine the mRNA expression levels of circadian clock-related genes in mouse liver tissue. The results showed that low, medium, and high doses of SEP-3 significantly increased SDM, ALT, and AST (p < 0.05), and medium and high doses of SEP-3 significantly reduced SDM liver index and GC and ACTH. As SEP-3 increased the apoptotic protein and Wnt/β-Catenin pathway, mRNA expression gradually tended to normal (p < 0.05). This suggests that sleep deprivation can cause excessive oxidative stress in mice, which can lead to liver damage. Additionally, oligopeptide SEP-3 achieves the repair of liver damage by inhibiting SDM hepatocyte apoptosis, activating liver Wnt/β-Catenin pathway, and promoting hepatocyte proliferation and migration, and suggests that oligopeptide SEP-3 is closely related to repair of liver damage by regulating the biological rhythm of SDM disorder. Biological rhythm refers to the internal regulation of various life activities of an organism, which are determined by the specific time structure sequences of each individual. Behavior rhythm is the most intuitive embodiment of biological rhythm. To study the effect of low dose radiation on behavioral rhythm, zebrafish (Danio rerio) was used as a model organism in this study. The early embryos of zebrafish were irradiated at doses of 0.01, 0.1, and 1 Gy to observe the changes in zebrafish development, circadian rhythm, key clock genes, related RNA and protein expression, and melatonin. The results revealed that 0.1 and 1 Gy radiation could lead to different degrees of telencephalic nerve cell apoptosis and the formation of vacuolar structures. 0.1 and 1 Gy radiation could reduce the hatching rate of zebrafish embryos at 72 hpf and delay embryo hatching. The analysis of circadian behavior at 120 hpf demonstrated that 1 Gy dose of radiation altered the circadian rhythm of zebrafish, as well as decreased the distance, amplitude, and phase of movement. RT-PCR analysis of the key clock genes (bmal1b, clock1a, per1b, per2, cry2, and nr1d1) involved in regulating circadian rhythm was performed. The results showed that 1 Gy radiation could interfere with the expression of clock genes in zebrafish embryos and upregulate bmal1b, clock1a, and per1b. Western blot experiments further verified the protein expression of key clock genes, bmal1b and clock. Detection of melatonin secretion at different time points over 24 h showed that radiation doses of 0.1 and 1 Gy could increase melatonin secretion. Based on these findings, it is speculated that a certain dose of radiation may affect melatonin secretion, which impacts the telencephalon structure and ontogeny of zebrafish, delays hatching, and changes the circadian rhythm. This effect is thought to be achieved through upregulating the expression of circadian rhythm genes, clock1a and per1b and related proteins, which may be responsible for the abnormal circadian rhythm caused by radiation.

Changes in the activity of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system are responsible for a stable shift in the regulation of the cardiovascular system in essential hypertension (EH). They can be characterized as hemodynamic allostasis. The purpose of our study was to determine the role of hemodynamic parameters in allostatic load in patients with EH without metabolic syndrome. Twenty-four hours of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed, followed by linear and non-linear rhythm analysis. Based on the daily index, patients with EH were divided into two groups: group 1—patients with no significant nighttime decrease in blood pressure (BP); group 2—patients who had a nocturnal decrease in BP. The control group included healthy persons aged 25 to 69 years. A linear analysis was used to determine the mean values of systolic and diastolic BP, heart rate (HR), time load of BP, circadian index, and structural point of BP. Non-linear analysis was applied to determine the mesor, amplitude, range of oscillations and % rhythm of BP and HR. The allostatic load index (ALI) was also calculated on the basis of the corresponding biomarkers. It was found that ALI was significantly higher in groups 1 and 2 in comparison with the control group. The hemodynamic mechanisms of this increase were different.

Surface‐dwelling C. catla were exposed to different photoperiods (8L:16D, 12L:12D, 12D:12L and 16L:8D) and the mRNA level profile of enzymes involved in melatonin synthesis was evaluated in the pineal gland and retina. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the serum melatonin profile with the mRNA level was also performed. The results indicated diurnal variations in the transcripts of tph1, aanat and hiomt in the pineal organ and retina, and these variations change with the change in lighting regime. The serum melatonin profile showed rhythmicity in the natural photoperiod, but the serum melatonin level increased proportionally with increasing daylength. In short photoperiods, the peak value (though lower than in long photoperiods) of melatonin maintains a longer duration in serum. Moreover, the comparative analysis revealed a similar profile of mRNA of pineal aanat1 and aanat2 with serum melatonin under the same lighting conditions. This indicates that serum melatonin is produced by the pineal gland. Our results specify the importance of day length and the timing of onset or offset of the dark for maintaining the oscillating levels of serum melatonin and mRNA levels of melatonin biosynthesizing enzyme genes in the pineal organ and retina as well. The findings in this study highlight the distinctive pattern of mRNA levels in the pineal organ and retina under different photoperiods. The pineal melatonin biosynthesizing enzyme genes showed a similar pattern with serum melatonin levels while the retinal genes changed dramatically with photoperiod. We also revealed a light‐dependent transcriptional regulation of pineal aanat genes in C. catla. Moreover, our results suggest that ALAN and skyglow can influence the levels of serum melatonin and its biosynthesis, resulting in desynchronization of the entire biological clock as well as the overall physiology of the animal. Abstract To illuminate biocontrol traits between the Medfly pest and its predator Monomorium subopacum ant, we assessed the daily rhythm of ant foraging and Medfly larva emergence from host fruits in the argan forest. M. subopacum foraging activity and Ceratitis capitata larvae emergence were monitored in Essaouira argan forest during the fruiting season. Behavioral activities were quantified, and the circadian rhythms of the two species were determined. M. subopacum diel foraging was exhibited in a circadian bimodal rhythm with a principal morning peak and a secondary crepuscular one. Larvae’s emergence showed unimodal rhythmicity with a single morning peak with 86.42% of daily emergences. The studied behaviors of the two species showed a clear synchronization during their principal activity peaks, which suggests the importance of circadian timing in the temporal partitioning, and chance of encounters between the two species. Besides their adaptive and fundamental ecological values, the understanding of biological rhythms that govern the time of behavioral interactions and predict encounter schedules between pests and their natural enemies may provide a novel efficient tool in sustainable pest management. Hexaconazole is a widely used and frequently detected fungicide which is also reported to be persistent in environment. The toxicity of Hex to non-organisms such as reproductive toxicity, endocrine disrupting toxicity, and carcinogenic toxicity had been reported. However, study on the Hex-induced neurotoxicity is rare and the mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, environmental related concentrations of Hex were chosen to investigate the effects of Hex on nervous system from the aspect of biological rhythm under 90 d sub-chronic exposure. The results showed that Hex significantly affected the cognitive function of rats resulting in the deterioration of learning and memory ability and induced oxidative stress in rat brain. Moreover, the notable changes of neurotransmitters in rat brain suggested the disorder of nerve signaling conduction induced by Hex. The influence of Hex on biological rhythm was further detected which showed that levels of rhythm regulatory genes and proteins significantly disturbed at four monitored time periods. Based on these results, it was supposed that the underlying mechanism of Hex-induced cognitive dysfunction might through oxidative stress pathway. Our findings could systematically and comprehensively clarify the effects of Hex on nervous system and were helpful for prevention neurological diseases induced by triazole pesticides. Vitamin A is essential for brain function, in addition to its important roles in vision, immunity, and reproduction. Previous studies have shown that retinoic acid (RA), the bioactive form of vitamin A, is involved in the regulation of various intracellular responses related to biological rhythms. RA is reported to affect the circadian rhythm by binding to RA receptors, such as receptors in the circadian feedback loops in the mammalian suprachiasmatic nucleus. However, evidence of the impacts of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) on biological rhythms is limited, and most of the related studies were conducted on animals. In this review, we described the physiological functions of biological rhythms and physiological pathways/molecular mechanisms regulating the biological rhythms. We then discussed the current understanding of the associations of VAD with biological rhythm disorders/diseases (sleep disorders, impairments in learning/memory, emotional disorders, and other immune or metabolism diseases) and summarized the currently proposed mechanisms (mainly by retinoid nuclear receptors and related proteins) for the associations. This review may help recognize the role of VAD in biological rhythm disorders and stimulate clinical or epidemiological studies to confirm the findings of related animal studies.

Glyphodes pyloalis (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) is an important pest of mulberry trees in China, and current methods for accurate population monitoring and control of this pest are lacking. The sex pheromone of G. pyloalis in China was re‐identified as E10, E12, Z14‐hexadecenyl acetate (E10E12Z14‐16:Ac) and tentatively E10, E12, E14‐hexadecenyl acetate (E10E12E14‐16:Ac). The emergence began 2 h before the dark period, and the peak emergence was 3 h into scotophase. Analysing the female moth's age from 1–9 days revealed that the titre of sex pheromone E10E12Z14‐16:Ac and E10E12E14‐16:Ac did not change statistically, and the ratio remained constant at 7.19 ± 1.12. The titre of pheromone had a significant circadian rhythm, increasing at 2 h after darkness, peaking at 6–8 h before decreasing, but it was still detected after 4 h into photophase. Mating of G. pyloalis occurred mainly at night, with the highest rate during 3 h into scotophase, which was earlier than the temporal pattern of pheromone titres. 18.1% of unfed moths mated immediately after eclosion during the scotophase. This was lower than what is seen in 1–3‐day‐old moths but similar to 4‐day‐old moth. Mating can occur on the same day after emergence, primarily within 1–4 days. Female moths can release pheromone again 48 h after mating, but the ratio of E10E12Z14‐16:Ac and E10E12E14‐16:Ac was reduced to 5.1 ± 0.73. The trapping of male moths in the field showed a significant circadian rhythm, but significant differences in pheromone trapping in Sichuan Gongxian, Zhejiang Chun'an and Haining, and Jiangsu Wujiang were observed. At the same location, the circadian rhythm of moth trapping showed differences between generations. The trapping of the overwintering generation occurred mostly in the early period of scotophase, while other generations were caught slightly later. Owing to domestication, dog behaviour differs from wolf behaviour, which should also affect time budgets. At the Wolf Science Center, wolves and mongrel dogs are raised and kept in a similar way; thus, it is an ideal place to compare the time budgets of wolves and dogs in search of potential domestication-related shifts. Seven wolf packs and four dog packs were observed over a full year. We focused on major behavioural categories, such as resting and foraging, and calculated the proportion of time they spent on each of these activities. Based on mainstream domestication hypotheses we predicted dogs to be generally more active than wolves because domestication would have relaxed the need for behavioural efficiency. As expected, wolves and dogs differed in their time budgets. Wolves slept, walked and vocalized more than dogs, whereas dogs foraged, sat and manipulated objects more. Human presence around the enclosure increased the activity of both, but dogs were more active than wolves in this situation. Season and time of day had the same effect on dogs and wolves. We conclude that dogs are not too different from wolves in intrinsic motivation affecting their time budgets, except for the increased responses of dogs to humans. Background: Circadian rhythm disorders (CRDs) are closely associated with the occurrence and development of various diseases, such as inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as tumors. The impact of a CRD on bodily health is a complex and comprehensive process, and its molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways are still unclear. We therefore aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism variation and adverse outcomes associated with CRDs in a prospective cohort of CRD cases and controls at term using multiomics data. The study has been tasked with developing a precise health promotion model for the prevention and management of CRDs.Methods: This will be a 5-year prospective cohort study centered on the health management of individuals with CRDs. One hundred volunteers were recruited and had undergone baseline specimen collection, health examination, and health assessment. All of them will be followed up every year using the same protocol, and their biological specimens will be subjected to multiomics analysis after standardized processing.Discussion: Longitudinal health examination, health assessment, and multiomics data will be analyzed to study the impact of CRDs on the volunteers' health status. Background: The impact of biological rhythm disorder (BRD) on the association of childhood maltreatment (CM) and suicidal behavior in adolescents remains unclear. CM increases the risk of suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal planning (SP), and suicidal attempts (SAs). There is less investigation on gender differences in CM's effects on suicidal behavior. It is unknown whether the impacts vary with different levels of BRD. Aims: To identify gender differences in CM's effects on suicidal behavior and to investigate these impacts at different levels of BRD. Method: The analysis is based on data from 7,986 adolescents recruited from three cities in China between October and December 2019. All participants, aged 14.7 ± 2 years, filled out standard questionnaires involving CM, BRD, and suicidal behavior. Results: A total of 22.9, 10.8, and 4.7% of the adolescents reported SI/SP/SAs in the past year. Girls are more likely to engage in SI and SP when exposed to the highest level of CM; boys are more likely to engage in SAs than girls. A significant relationship between moderate levels of CM and SI/SP/SAs was only observed in girls exposed to low BRD. Moderate CM is only significantly associated with SI in boys exposed to low BRD. The percentage of low-BRD adolescents who experienced high CM was 31.4%, whereas 58% of high-BRD adolescents experienced high CM in SI. Adolescents with high BRD were more likely to experience high levels of CM in SP and SAs. Conclusions: Adolescents at high risk of suicidal behavior in relation to CM should be targeted accordingly. Objectives: To investigate the association between pain and sleep quality, anxiety, depression, body perception, and biological rhythm in chronic scrotal pain (CSP)., Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study of 140 CSP patients was conducted between January and October 2023. The patients were separated into groups according to the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score as group 1 (score<3, n=27), group 2 (score: 3-6, n=84), and group 3 (score>6, n=29). In addition to demographic data, the points were recorded from the Body Image Scale (BIS), Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)., Results: The median (IQR) age of patients was 33 (20) years and the median (IQR) duration of pain was 5 (9) months. Group 3 patients had more anxiety (24.1% vs. group 1: 22.2%; group 2: 8.3%; P=0.03) and depression (55.2% vs. group 1: 40.7%; group 2: 29.8%; P=0.04) symptoms. No statistical differences were determined between the groups according to the BIS (P=0.54). The median (IQR) total BRIAN score was higher in group 3 than group 1 [37 (11) vs. 33 (13), P=0.03]. Higher rates of poor sleep quality were determined in group 3 patients according to the PSQI (75.9% vs. group 1: 48.1%; group 2: 51.2%; P=0.04). The VAS score was found to be positively associated with pain duration, total BRIAN score and PSQI score (r=0.31, P<0.001; r=0.17, P=0.04; r=0.23, P=0.006, respectively). Recently, with the rapid growth of the global population and the exhaustion of resources, exploration activities in extreme environments such as the polar regions, the outer space, the deep sea, the deep underground and highlands are becoming increasingly more frequent. This in-depth exploration of the external environment and the consequent dramatic changes in lifestyles impact on sleep, a basic life activity of humans, in ways that cannot be overlooked. the basic life activity of human beings. Sleep, a basic life activity and the result of the evolution of organisms to adapt to their environment, is closely associated with sleep homeostasis and endogenous rhythms. However, external environmental changes and lifestyle shifts in extreme environments have had a significant impact on the patterns and the quality of sleep in humans. Furthermore, this impact can lead to many physiological and psychological problems, posing a great threat to human health. In this review, we delved into the specific effects of different extreme natural environments and enclosed environments on sleep, elaborating on how these environments alter the patterns and the quality of sleep in humans. In addition, we summarized the changes in human sleep under extreme environments to help gain a better understanding of the mechanisms by which these specific environments impact human sleep. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine relationship between anhedonia, disruption of biological rhythms, functioning and depression severity in patients with bipolar disorder (BD)., Methods: The sample included 58 patients with bipolar depression aged 18-65 years. The participants were assessed using the following scales: Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale (DARS), Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology- self-report (QIDS-SR), Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN), Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST). Correlations between the variables were calculated. We built linear regression models with FAST or QIDS-SR as a dependent variable. Mediation analysis was performed., Results: Statistically significant correlations were observed between the included variables. Biological rhythms dysregulation and anhedonia were independent predictors of the level of functioning or depression severity. Mediation analysis demonstrated statistically significant mediation of the relationship between anhedonia and depression severity/functioning by the BRIAN score., Conclusions: We demonstrated for the first time the interactions between anhedonia, dysregulation of biological rhythms and functioning/depression severity in patients with BD. Reward deficits by causing disruption of rhythm of daily activities and social contacts may result in more difficulties in functioning and higher intensity of depressive symptoms.

Pregnancy and childbirth are among the most dramatic physiological and emotional transformations of a lifetime. Despite their central importance to human survival, many gaps remain in our understanding of the temporal progression of and mechanisms underlying the transition to new parenthood. The goal of this paper is to outline the physiological and emotional development of the maternal-infant dyad from late pregnancy to the postpartum period, and to provide a framework to investigate this development using non-invasive timeseries. We focus on the interaction among neuroendocrine, emotional, and autonomic outputs in the context of late pregnancy, parturition, and post-partum. We then propose that coupled dynamics in these outputs can be leveraged to map both physiologic and pathologic pregnancy, parturition, and parenthood. This approach could address gaps in our knowledge and enable early detection or prediction of problems, with both personalized depth and broad population scale.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has put the mental health of healthcare workers at risk. However, the potential psychosocial factors underlying mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, require further investigation. The present study aimed to explore the factors that influence the mental state of healthcare workers. Methods: A total of 276 healthcare workers completed a set of online self-report questionnaires from February 4 to 7, 2020, in the following order: general information related to the COVID-19 outbreak, Biological Rhythms Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Social Support Rating Scale. Results: Our study revealed that both social support and age moderated the ability of biological rhythm disturbance to exacerbate depression (R2 = 0.47; effect size f2 = 0.85). Higher levels of social support buffered the amplification of depression associated with increased biological rhythm disturbance in all age groups, and especially in younger individuals (mean age = 26.57, se = 0.04). Depressive symptoms were predicted by both social and sleeping rhythms, whereas anxiety symptoms were predicted only by social rhythm. Married individuals had lower biological rhythm disturbance ratings and higher social support ratings. Females also reported higher ratings in social support. Conclusions: Our study suggests that biological rhythm intervention along with social support can reduce the negative effect of biological rhythm disturbance on mood disorders, especially in younger people. We also provide evidence for the ability of social support to buffer stress in a major health crisis and demonstrate the effects of marital status and sex, which provide a different perspective for studying mental crisis management.

Irregular light exposure is a newly identified environmental factor for the progression of lipid metabolism; however, the specific effect of light color exposure on lipid homeostasis remains unknown. Herein, 4-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice (n = 12) fed a high-fat diet (HFD) were exposed to a standard 12-h light: 12-h dark cycle (LD-WF) and a 24-h continuous monochromatic blue light (LL-BF), green light (LL-GF), or white light (LL-WF) condition for 12 weeks. LL-BF interfered with the expression of circadian genes in the hypothalamus and upregulated the plasma corticosterone (CORT) levels (p 0.05). Surprisingly, LL-GF did not show any changes induced by LL-BF and LL-WF, and contrary to LL-BF, LL-GF and LD-WF showed no significantly differing changes (p > 0.05). Taken together, exposure to monochromatic blue light but not green light is associated with continuous light-aggravated hepatic steatosis in HFD-fed mice. The effect of continuous blue light exposure may be attributed to the disturbance of biological rhythm, increase in CORT secretion, induction of oxidative stress, and interference of the Acc and Hl levels in the liver.
