Exploiting plant defense mechanisms is a promising tool for pest management in modern agriculture. Plant Essential Oils (EOs) are used for the sustainable control of agricultural pests; however, their impact on plant defense has been scarcely investigated. In this work, we study for the first time whether the spraying of EOs can activate plant defense mechanisms in sweet pepper. The olfactory capacity of Encarsia formosa (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) to respond to defenseactivated plants was used to select garlic and peppermint EOs among nine EOs sprayed on sweet peppers. The expression level of defense-related genes in plant tissues and the phytotoxicity were measured in response to EO foliar applications. Moreover, the olfactory responses of the herbivores, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and their natural enemies, Orius laevigatus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) and Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae), to EO induced plant volatiles were also investigated. The gene expression analysis revealed activated jasmonic and salicylic acid defense signaling pathways in EO-sprayed sweet pepper plants and a negligible phytotoxic effect was recorded. Choice tests revealed varying behavioral responses in selected insect models when plants were treated with garlic and peppermint EOs in different concentrations. Our results suggest that garlic and peppermint EO spray applications can enhance the defense mechanisms of sweet peppers and have a cascading bottom-up effects on the associated food chain. Tomato has an economic relevance worldwide but its production is threatened by several biotic factors, including the invasive South American tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta. The control of this pest mainly relies on the repeated applications of synthetic insecticides that can have considerable non-target effects; therefore, new sustainable control approaches are required. The biocidal activity of garlic has been recognized and no risks for consumers and the environment are expected in its use. However, the practical implementation of garlic extracts is hampered by several drawbacks that could be overcome by nanotechnologies. We developed and characterized a new garlic essential oil-based nanoemulsion (GEO-NE) and laboratory trials were carried out to investigate its insecticidal activity against T. absoluta involving different instars and exposure routes. GEO-NE side effects on the mirid predator Nesidiocoris tenuis and tomato plants were also assessed in the laboratory. The nanoformulation had dimensions belonging to the nanometric scale and good stability over time. GEO-NE showed significant toxicity towards T. absoluta eggs and larvae and repellence for ovipositing females. No lethal effect on N. tenuis adults was recorded but its progeny was significantly reduced on GEO-NE treated plants. By contrast, GEO-NE had no phytotoxic effects on sprayed tomato plants. Our findings suggested that GEO-NE can successfully control T. absoluta and its application deserves to be considered as a potential tool for tomato Integrated Pest Management. Plants developed a series of defence mechanisms to counteract the attack of herbivores. These can impact on food‐webs at various trophic levels, in both natural and managed ecosystems, such as crops. The biochemical and ecological bases behind these processes are reviewed here by highlighting the differences in direct and indirect, constitutive and induced defences. In integrated pest management (IPM), several pest control tools are applied in an economically sound way in order to increase the crop resilience and reduce reliance on synthetic pesticides. Plant resistance is thus a crucial aspect of preventive pest control strategies in several agroecosystems, including tomato. In this context, we review the current literature dealing with the physiology and biochemistry of tomato plants in terms of metabolite pathways and multitrophic interactions. Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a key insect pest, seriously damaging tomato crops and inducing tremendous yield and economic losses. The area of origin of this insect is in South America, while it has recently become an invasive pest in Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, there has been growing evidence that biological control through field releases of egg parasitoids and predatory mirids generally induces promising control results of T. absoluta whenever the natural enemy species as well as the timing and release rates are suitably chosen. As such, application of botanical and/or microbial pesticides represent a potential control approach to be adopted against T. absoluta. This would decrease the detrimental side effects on non-target beneficial arthropods typically exhibited by hazardous chemical insecticide applications. The scientific literature emphasizing the (i) releases of parasitoids and/or predators, (ii) applications of biopesticides, and (iii) combination « release of parasitoid and/or predator + biopesticide treatments and/or other biorational tools», as sustainable control options of T. absoluta throughout the MENA region over the last decade, is comprehensively reviewed and unraveled herein. Insect parasitoids can attack phylogenetically related hosts that share similar physiological properties and defense mechanisms and, more importantly, overlapping ecological niches. Here, host preferences of three parasitoids, Asobara japonica (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Ganaspis brasiliensis and Leptopilina japonica (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), were examined on two closely related hosts, Drosophila suzukii and D. melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Each parasitoid's rate of successful parasitism (or offspring survival) on these hosts was first compared in no choice tests. Results showed that A. japonica had higher parasitism levels than G. brasiliensis and L. japonica, and that offspring survival for all parasitoids was similar on both host species. Host preferences in choice tests were then compared, with each parasitoid presented with the two host species at different proportions of host abundance. None of the parasitoids showed host preference or host switching, even though these parasitoids have different degrees of host specificity, from more generalized (A. japonica) to more specialized (G. brasiliensis). Further examination of parasitoid olfactory responses showed all three parasitoid species were attracted to volatiles from fruit infested by either host species and showed no preference to either D. suzukii or D. melanogaster. Results suggest that the hosts' phylogenetical similarity and a lack of any obvious fitness costs for offspring survival may reduce host preference by these larval parasitoids. To assess the potential of Asobara japonica Belokobylskij (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) as a biological control agent for the invasive Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), key biological traits were evaluated: preference and suitability of different host ages, relative performance on two host species (D. suzukii and Drosophila melanogaster Meigen), female life-time fecundity and egg maturation on the two host species, and parasitism levels on D. suzukii larvae infesting different host fruits (blackberry, cherry and strawberry). Asobara japonica preferred young over old hosts, and although host age did not affect offspring survival, parasitoid offspring developed faster in older than younger hosts but had a reduced body size. There was higher A. japonica offspring survival, longer developmental time, and larger body when reared from D. suzukii than D. melanogaster. Female wasps emerged with around one third of their lifetime egg load and matured eggs rapidly with mature egg load reaching a peak 2-3 d post-emergence. Large females (typically reared from D. suzukii) contained more mature eggs than small females (typically from D. melanogaster). During their lifetime, A. japonica females produced 117.4 and 92.5 progeny on D. suzukii and D. melanogaster, respectively, with a corresponding intrinsic rate of increase of 0.217 and 0.210, respectively. Progeny were strongly female-biased (> 90% females), regardless of host age or species. This larval parasitoid was able to develop from D. suzukii infesting cherry, blackberry or strawberry. Tuta absoluta, one of the most damaging pests of tomato crops and other solanaceous plants, has been extensively managed by the use of synthetic pesticides. Unfortunately, the reliance on chemicals has negatively affected human health, biodiversity, and the environment. Therefore, the development of eco-friendly alternatives is highly encouraged to replace hazardous chemical pesticides. Inhibitory cystine knot (ICK) peptides have a leading future as they present a narrow spectrum activity, and remarkable stability, making them promising bio-insecticide modalities against pests of crops of economic importance. In this study, the impact of Pea albumin 1-b (PA1b), a plant ICK peptide extracted from seeds of peas (Pisum sativum, Fabaceae) was investigated through foliar application to be delivered to 2nd instar larvae of T. absoluta. However, due to the failure of delivery upon foliar application, microinjections of the peptide into 3rd instar larvae were performed to assess the insecticidal activity of PA1b when being into the body cavity of the larvae. Toxicity bioassays were conducted in Petri dishes in a developed experimental arena that allowed us to easily survey the status of the larva and the leaf for up to 18 days. Our study showed that PA1b has a significant toxic effect against T. absoluta when delivered through injection. Further studies must be conducted to optimize the administration of PA1b into the larvae of T. absoluta, investigate the binding sites of the peptide in this pest, and ascertain the insecticidal capacity of such a peptide at an agricultural-relevant scale. The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is native to the western Neotropics. After invading Spain in 2006, it spread rapidly throughout Afro-Eurasia and has become a major threat to world tomato production. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies have been developed, but widespread insecticide use has caused selection for insecticide resistance as well as undesirable effects on key beneficial arthropods. Augmentation and conservation biological control relying on omnivorous mirid predators has proved successful for management of T. absoluta, where implementation is dependent on abiotic, biotic (e.g., alternative prey), and anthropogenic factors (e.g., pesticides). Research has been carried out on larval parasitoids, showing potential for further development of sustainable control. The development of resistant tomato varieties is ongoing, but they are not commercially available yet. Insect parasitoids are often manipulated to improve biological control programs for various arthropod pests. Volatile compounds can be a relevant cue used by most parasitoid hymenoptera for host or host microhabitat location. Here, we studied olfactory responses of the braconid Asobara japonica Belokobylskij, an Asiatic endoparasitoid of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), toward its host and host substrates. Adult A. japonica displayed an innate attraction to undescribed volatile cues from infested host fruits irrespectively of the juvenile rearing experience, i.e. they respond to a novel cue subsequently used for microhabitat selection. These data suggest that A. japonica parasitoids mass-reared on artificial diet and factitious host ( D. melanogaster) can successfully locate their hosts. Naïve female parasitoids did not show a preference towards any of the tested host media. However, the enforced adult experience with the rearing host medium modified the olfactory preference patterns toward non-natal host fruits. These findings provide evidence of associative learning during the adult stage of A. japonica, and demonstrate its plasticity in exploiting the volatiles from various fruits infested by D. suzukii. The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a devastating pest currently threatening the global tomato industry worldwide. In the last 10 years, it has spread and expanded to most of Europe, Africa and Asia, causing extensive damage to the crop itself and to the international tomato trade. With the aim of providing an overview of the current knowledge on this pest, we have briefly reviewed the available literature relying on its spread, quarantine, modeling and management. Finally, we have underlined the gaps in knowledge and provided several recommendations on how to achieve sustainable control as well as how to prevent further spread into unaffected areas. Background: Appendectomy is the most common surgical procedure performed in emergency surgery. Because of lack of consensus about the most appropriate technique, appendectomy is still being performed by both open (OA) and laparoscopic (LA) methods. In this retrospective analysis, we aimed to compare the laparoscopic approach and the conventional technique in the treatment of acute appendicitis. Methods: Retrospectively collected data from 593 consecutive patients with acute appendicitis were studied. These comprised 310 patients who underwent conventional appendectomy and 283 patients treated laparoscopically. The two groups were compared for operative time, length of hospital stay, postoperative pain, complication rate, return to normal activity and cost. Results: Laparoscopic appendectomy was associated with a shorter hospital stay (2.7 ± 2.5 days in LA and 1.4 ± 0.6 days in OA), with a less need for analgesia and with a faster return to daily activities (11.5 ± 3.1 days in LA and 16.1 ± 3.3 in OA). Operative time was significantly shorter in the open group (31.36± 11.13 min in OA and 54.9± 14.2 in LA).Total number of complications was less in the LA group with a significantly lower incidence of wound infection (1.4 % vs 10.6 %, P<0.001).The total cost of treatment was higher by 150 € in the laparoscopic group. Conclusion: The laparoscopic approach is a safe and efficient operative procedure in appendectomy and it provides clinically beneficial advantages over open method (including shorter hospital stay, decreased need for postoperative analgesia, early food tolerance, earlier return to work, lower rate of wound infection) against only marginally higher hospital costs. We studied the acute toxicity and the sublethal effects, on reproduction and host-killing activity, of four widely used insecticides on the generalist parasitoid Bracon nigricans (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a natural enemy of the invasive tomato pest, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Laboratory bioassays were conducted applying maximum insecticide label rates at three constant temperatures, 25, 35 and 40°C, considered as regular, high and very high, respectively. Data on female survival and offspring production were used to calculate population growth indexes as a measure of population recovery after pesticide exposure. Spinetoram caused 80% mortality at 25°C and 100% at higher temperatures, while spinosad caused 100% mortality under all temperature regimes. Cyantraniliprole was slightly toxic to B. nigricans adults in terms of acute toxicity at the three temperatures, while it did not cause any sublethal effects in egg-laying and host-killing activities. The interaction between the two tested factors (insecticide and temperature) significantly influenced the number of eggs laid by the parasitoid, which was the lowest in the case of females exposed to chlorantraniliprole at 35°C. Furthermore, significantly lower B. nigricans demographic growth indexes were estimated for all the insecticides under all temperature conditions, with the exception of chlorantraniliprole at 25°C. Our findings highlight an interaction between high temperatures and insecticide exposure, which suggests a need for including natural stressors, such as temperature, in pesticide risk assessments procedures. The assessment of pesticides compatibility with natural enemies is recommended before including agrochemicals in integrated and organic pest management schemes. The lethal and sublethal effects of a mineral oil and a juvenile hormone mimic (pyriproxyfen), on adults and larvae of Aphytis melinus , a key ectoparasitoid of armored scale insect pests of citrus, such as Aonidiella aurantii , were evaluated. Mineral oil caused very high mortality on the adults, while a lower acute toxicity was recorded on young instars. No significant effects on their reproduction capacity and on the sex-ratio of the progeny were observed. Pyriproxyfen had neither lethal nor sublethal effects (in terms of survived female fertility) on A. melinus adults. However, parasitoid larvae exposed to this insecticide suffered strong acute toxicity and fertility reduction (progeny number and proportion of female progeny). When adults were offered the choice to parasitize treated and untreated scales they significantly preferred the control ones, and when they were exposed to only treated scaled the parasitism rate was significantly lower only with mineral oil-treated hosts. The significant differences in the susceptibility of the two parasitoid instars highlight the importance of including this aspect in pesticide risk assessment procedures and in the choice of the pesticide and of the treatment timing in the field. Overall, the results indicate potential for integrating A. melinus , both naturally present and artificially released, and these insecticides only by appropriate timing of insecticide spraying and parasitoid releases. Recent evidence demonstrates that increased adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) may prevent colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between health-related characteristics and CRC in the context of the MD. This was a case-control study conducted on a sample of 338 consecutive patients with a first diagnosis of CRC recruited in an urban facility in the city of Catania, southern Italy, and matched with 676 apparently healthy subjects without clinical symptoms or signs of any type of cancer. Data regarding sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle characteristics were collected, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet pattern was assessed using the MedDietScore. A significant association between a greater adherence to the MD and lower odds of having cancer (odds ratio = 0.46, 95% confidence interval: 0.28–0.75) was found. Also, smoking status, family history of CRC, obesity, diabetes, physical activity, and high intake of alcohol were significantly associated with CRC, but only among subjects less adherent to the MD. MD was associated with a less detrimental effects of several health-related characteristics associated with CRC, suggesting potential benefits of adherence to this dietary pattern with regards to CRC risk factors. The South American tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a major threat to tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) crops. After its first detection in Spain in 2006, it spread rapidly through the Western Palaearctic region, arriving in Tunisia 2 years later. The aim of this research was to assess whether generalist indigenous parasitoids are adapting to this exotic host in Tunisian tomato crops. For this, we conducted a survey in four Tunisian tomato-growing areas by sampling infested leaves of tomato and solanaceous weeds and exposing artificially infested sentinel plants. Two ectoparasitoid species were found attacking and developing on T. absoluta: Bracon sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Necremnus sp. nr artynes (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), whereas no egg or pupal parasitoids were found. The eulophid wasp was the most abundant with a peak of apparent parasitism rate of 25.5%. It emerged from parasitized T. absoluta young larvae in exposed sentinel plants and in sampled infested tomato leaves, both in greenhouse and open field cultivations. Bracon sp. showed a gregarious development on T. absoluta mature larvae and it was collected only on sentinel plants exposed in the Ragueda (Kiarouan) site, with 10.23% of estimated parasitism. Although further research is still needed to assess properly the ecological role of these parasitoids in the biological control of T. absoluta, this study represents the first step toward establishing the scientific basis for including these parasitoids in the Tunisian IPM and biological programs against this pest. The South American tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is an invasive Neotropical pest. After its first detection in Europe, it rapidly invaded more than 30 Western Palaearctic countries becoming a serious agricultural threat to tomato production in both protected and open-field crops. Among the pest control tactics against exotic pests, biological control using indigenous natural enemies is one of the most promising. Here, available data on the Afro-Eurasian natural enemies of T. absoluta are compiled. Then, their potential for inclusion in sustainable pest control packages is discussed providing relevant examples. Collections were conducted in 12 countries, both in open-field and protected susceptible crops, as well as in wild flora and/or using infested sentinel plants. More than 70 arthropod species, 20 % predators and 80 % parasitoids, were recorded attacking the new pest so far. Among the recovered indigenous natural enemies, only few parasitoid species, namely, some eulophid and braconid wasps, and especially mirid predators, have promising potential to be included in effective and environmentally friendly management strategies for the pest in the newly invaded areas. Pesticide risk assessments are usually based on short-term acute toxicity tests, while longer-term population dynamic related traits, critical to the success of biological control and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, are often overlooked. This is increasingly important with respect to new biopesticides that frequently cause no short-term acute effects, but that can induce multiple physiological and behavioral sublethal effects, leading to a decrease in population growth and ecosystem services. In this study we assessed the lethal and sublethal effects of six biopesticides [abamectin, azadirachtin, Bacillus thuringiensis, borax plus citrus oil (Prev-Am®), emamectin benzoate, and spinosad], used in tomato crops to control the invasive pest Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), on adults and pupae of the parasitoid Bracon nigricans (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Data on female survival and production of female offspring were used to calculate population growth indexes as a measure of population recovery after pesticide exposure. Spinosad caused 100% and 80% mortality in exposed adults (even 10 d after the treatment) and pupae, respectively. Although most of the biopesticides had low levels of acute toxicity, multiple sublethal effects were observed. The biocontrol activity of both females that survived 1-h and 10-d old residues, and females that emerged from topically treated pupae was significantly affected by the application of the neurotoxic insecticides emamectin benzoate and abamectin. Furthermore, very low B. nigricans demographic growth indices were estimated for these two insecticides, indicating potential local extinction of the wasp populations. Among the tested products, Bt proved to be the safest for B. nigricans adults and pupae. Our findings emphasize that acute toxicity assessment alone cannot fully predict the actual impact of pesticides on non-target parasitoids. Thus, sublethal effects related to the species specific life-history variables must be carefully considered in order to assess pesticide risks and to incorporate new pesticides, including biopesticides, into IPM programmes. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy represents an effective therapeutic approach for right colon cancer (RCC). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate bowel function recovery, length of hospital stay, operative time, and the number of general and anastomosis-related postoperative complications from intracorporeal anastomosis (ICA) vs. extracorporeal anastomosis (ECA); the secondary outcome was the number of lymph nodes retrieved. This observational study was conducted on 108 patients who underwent right hemicolectomy for RCC; after surgical resection, 64 patients underwent ICA and 44 underwent ECA. The operative time was slightly longer in the ICA group than in the ECA group, even though the difference was not significant (199.31 ± 48.90 min vs. 183.64 ± 35.80 min; p = 0.109). The length of hospital stay (7.53 ± 1.91 days vs. 8.77 ± 3.66 days; p = 0.036) and bowel function recovery (2.21 ± 1.01 days vs. 3.45 ± 1.82 days; p < 0.0001) were significantly lower in the ICA group. There were no significant differences in postoperative complications (12% in ICA group vs. 9% in ECA group), wound infection (6% in ICA group vs. 7% in ECA group), or anastomotic leakage (6% in ICA group vs. 9% in ECA group). We did not observe a significant difference between the two groups in the number of lymph nodes collected (19.46 ± 7.06 in ICA group vs. 22.68 ± 8.79 in ECA group; p = 0.086). ICA following laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, compared to ECA, could lead to a significant improvement in bowel function recovery and a reduction in the length of hospital stay in RCC patients. Background: Despite the theoretical advantages of laparoscopic surgery, it is still not considered the standard treatment for colorectal cancer patients because of criticism concerning oncologic stability. This study aimed at examining the short- and long-term follow-up results of laparoscopic surgery versus open surgery for colorectal cancer and at investigating clinical outcomes, oncologic safety, and any potential advantages of laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection. Subjects and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a database containing the information about patients who underwent surgery for stage I-III colorectal cancer from January 2004 to January 2012 at our institution. Results: The patients who underwent the laparoscopic-assisted procedure showed a significantly faster recovery than those who underwent open surgery, namely, less time to first passing flatus ( P=.041), time of first bowel motion ( P=.04), time to resume normal diet ( P=.043), and time to walk independently ( P=.031). Laparoscopic colorectal surgery caused less pain for patients, leading to lower need of analgesic ( P=.002) and less hospital recovery time ( P=.034), compared with patients who underwent open surgery. No differences were found in 3- and 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates. Conclusions: Our results suggested that the laparoscopic approach was as safe as the open alternative. Laparoscopic-assisted surgery has been shown to be a favorable surgical option with better short-term outcomes and similar long-term oncological control compared with open resection. Abstract: The generalist predator Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is a key natural enemy of various arthropods in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Releases of this predator are frequently carried out, and it is included in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs of several crops. The accurate assessment of the compatibility of various pesticides with predator activity is key for the success of this strategy. We assessed acute and sublethal toxicity of 14 pesticides on O. laevigatus adults under laboratory conditions. Pesticides commonly used in either conventional or organic farming were selected for the study, including six biopesticides, three synthetic insecticides, two sulfur compounds and three adjuvants. To assess the pesticides’ residual persistence, the predator was exposed for 3d to pesticide residues on tomato sprouts that had been treated 1h, 7d or 14d prior to the assay. The percentage of mortality and the sublethal effects on predator reproductive capacity were summarized in a reduction coefficient (Ex ) and the pesticides were classified according to the IOBC (International Organization for Biological Control) toxicity categories. The results showed that the pesticides greatly differed in their toxicity, both in terms of lethal and sub lethal effects, as well as in their persistence. In particular, abamectin was the most noxious and persistent, and was classified as harmful up to 14d after the treatment, causing almost 100% mortality. Spinosad, emamectin, metaflumizone were moderately harmful until 7d after the treatment, while the other pesticides were slightly harmful or harmless. The results, based on the combination of assessment of acute mortality, predator reproductive capacity pesticides residual and pesticides residual persistence, stress the need of using complementary bioassays (e.g. assessment of lethal and sublethal effects) to carefully select the pesticides to be used in IPM programs and appropriately time the pesticides application (as function of natural enemies present in crops) and potential releases of natural enemies like O. laevigatus. Simple Summary: Nowadays, globalization causes a series of negative consequence for the sustainability of agricultural systems, such as solanaceous cultivations. Here, we report for the first time the presence of an invasive polyphagous mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), in Italian solanaceous crops, i.e., tomato and bell pepper. For this, we analyzed at the morphological and molecular level various specimens collected in Sicily during fall 2020. A phylogenetic analysis conducted comparing an ≈800 bp portion of the mitochondrial genome of several worldwide populations, suggests that the introduced population might originate from Asia. This study represents the first step toward establishing a P. solenopsis monitoring and sustainable control program in Europe. The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is an extremely polyphagous invasive pest that can cause serious damages to cultivated plants. The pest is native to America but invaded Asian and Mediterranean countries during the last decades. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., Solanaceae) is an economic relevant crop worldwide and its production can be threatened by numerous insect pests including P. solenopsis. We recorded for the first time P. solenopsis in association with tomato in greenhouse crops and urban landscapes in Sicily (Italy) during the fall season in 2020. The species was identified as P. solenopsis based on the morphological characters and DNA amplification of an ≈800 bp portion of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene. The phylogenetic analysis among the obtained P. solenopsis mtCOI sequences with those already available in GenBank suggests Asian countries as a potential source of new introduction. This is the first record of P. solenopsis attacking tomato plants in Italy and may represent a potential threat for tomato production in Europe and nearby countries. Background: The economic crisis that began in 2008 has severely affected Southern (Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain) Western European (SWE) countries of Western Europe (WE) and may have affected ongoing efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of the economic crisis on the burden of HBV and HCV disease. Methods: Global Burden of Diseases 2019 data were used to analyse the rates of epidemiological metrics of HBV and HCV acute and chronic infections in SWE and WE. Time series modelling was performed to quantify the impact of healthcare expenditure on the time trend of HBV and HCV disease burden in 2000–2019. Results: Declining trends in incidence and prevalence rates of acute HBV (aHBV) and chronic HBV were observed in SWE and WE, with the pace of decline being slower in the post-austerity period (2010–2019) and mortality due to HBV stabilised in SWE. Acute HCV (aHCV) metrics and chronic HCV incidence and mortality showed a stable trend in SWE and WE, whereas the prevalence of chronic HCV showed an oscillating trend, decreasing in WE in 2010–2019 (p < 0.001). Liver cancer due to both hepatitis infections showed a stagnant burden over time. An inverse association was observed between health expenditure and metrics of both acute and chronic HBV and HCV. Conclusions: Epidemiological metrics for HBV and HCV showed a slower pace of decline in the post-austerity period with better improvement for HBV, a stabilisation of mortality and a stagnant burden for liver cancer due to both hepatitis infections. Background: Among the Citrus species, lemon (Citrus limon Burm f.) is one of the most affected by the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch). Moreover, chemical control is hampered by the mite's ability to develop genetic resistance against acaricides. In this context, the identification of the genetic basis of the host resistance could represent a sustainable strategy for spider mite control. In the present study, a marker-trait association analysis was performed on a lemon population employing an association mapping approach. An inter-specific full-sib population composed of 109 accessions was phenotyped through a detached-leaf assays performed in modified Huffaker cells. Those individuals, complemented with two inter-specific segregating populations, were genotyped using a target-sequencing approach called SPET (Single Primer Enrichment Technology), the resulting SNPs were employed for the generation of an integrated genetic map. Results: The percentage of damaged area in the full-sib population showed a quantitative distribution with values ranging from 0.36 to 9.67%. A total of 47,298 SNPs were selected for an association mapping study and a significant marker linked with resistance to spider mite was detected on linkage group 5. In silico gene annotation of the QTL interval enabled the detection of 13 genes involved in immune response to biotic and abiotic stress. Gene expression analysis showed an over expression of the gene encoding for the ethylene-responsive transcription factor ERF098-like, already characterized in Arabidopsis and in rice for its involvement in defense response. Conclusion: The identification of a molecular marker linked to the resistance to spider mite attack can pave the way for the development of marker-assisted breeding plan for the development of novel selection coupling favorable agronomical traits (e.g. fruit quality, yield) with a higher resistance toward the mite. The host range of a given parasitoid species is shaped by host acceptance and suitability traits of the host and parasitoid species, which can themselves be influenced by the parasitoid genotype. However, during biological control introductions, relatively few parasitoid individuals are introduced into a new geographic region and the resulting founder event may alter their ability to attack and parasitize various host species. The aphid parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes is native to the Nearctic region and was introduced from Cuba to Southern Europe in the early 1970s to control two aphid pests of Citrus. We compared parasitoid preference and performance between members of introduced (French) and native (North American) populations of L. testaceipes on 16 aphid species and found differences in various aspects of host specificity. Individuals of the French population exhibited lower virulence overall than individuals of the North American population did. In particular, French L. testaceipes exhibited a lower capability to complete development within five aphid species than North American L. testaceipes did. F1 offspring of crosses between the two parasitoid populations demonstrated significant improvements in virulence on an aphid species on which members of the French parental population exhibited poor virulence. Simple Summary: After esophageal resection for cancer, severe postoperative complications (SPCs) have been reported in up to 20% of patients. These are associated with prolonged hospital stay, augmented costs, need for supplementary treatments, and increased 90-day mortality. The global effect of SPCs on long-term survival after esophagectomy is discussed, whereas, in the current literature, it is not frequently covered. The present systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis suggests a statistically significant detrimental effect of SPCs on 5-year overall survival in patients undergoing curative esophagectomy for cancer. To assess the impact of severe postoperative complications (SPCs) on long-term survival following curative esophagectomy for cancer, we conducted a systematic search of PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to December 2023. The included studies examined the relationship between SPCs and survival outcomes, defining SPCs as Clavien–Dindo grade > 3. The primary outcome measure was long-term overall survival (OS). We used restricted mean survival time difference (RMSTD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to calculate pooled effect sizes. Additionally, we applied the GRADE methodology to evaluate the certainty of the evidence. Results. Ten studies (2181 patients) were included. SPCs were reported in 651 (29.8%) patients. The RMSTD overall survival analysis shows that at 60-month follow-up, patients experiencing SPCs lived for 8.6 months (95% Cis −12.5, −4.7; p < 0.001) less, on average, compared with no-SPC patients. No differences were found for 60-month follow-up disease-free survival (−4.6 months, 95% CIs −11.9, 1.9; p = 0.17) and cancer-specific survival (−6.8 months, 95% CIs −11.9, 1.7; p = 0.21). The GRADE certainty of this evidence ranged from low to very low. Conclusions. This study suggests a statistically significant detrimental effect of SPCs on OS in patients undergoing curative esophagectomy for cancer. The tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) currently represents one of the most significant threats to tomato crop worldwide. Its transmission occurs mainly through contact between plants and infected surfaces, and only one case of mechanical transmission by arthropods has been reported. Here, we aim to assess the role of an invasive tomato pest, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), in ToBRFV transmission. Laboratory tests demonstrated the presence of the ToBRFV in adult moths obtained from larvae developed on ToBRFV-infected plants. Infected adults of T. absoluta were able to infect healthy tomato plants. In order to evaluate whether the occurrence of ToBRFV on T. absoluta adults was internal or external to the pupae, as results of larvae feeding on infected plants, pupae obtained from larvae fed on infected plants were externally disinfected and then analyzed for the presence of ToBRFV by RT-qPCR. Adults obtained from disinfected and not-disinfected pupae were also analyzed. Both adults and pupae were positive for the virus, suggesting its presence in the inner surface of the pupal exuvia. Electron microscopy, western blot analyses and hemolymph bioassay showed the absence of ToBRFV virions and viral coat protein in the hemolymph collected from disinfected pupae, demonstrating that the ToBRFV is not circulative in the progeny of T. absoluta adults obtained from larvae fed in infected plants, but probably adults got contaminated during their emergence, due to virus presence in the inner surface of pupal exuvia. This study demonstrates for the first time that T. absoluta can carry an infectious primary inoculum of ToBRFV, highlighting a potential epidemiological role of T. absoluta in spreading ToBRFV in the field. Introduction: Debate exists concerning the impact of complete mesocolic excision (CME) on long-term oncological outcomes. The aim of this review was to condense the updated literature and assess the effect of CME on long-term survival after right colectomy for cancer. Methods: PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched through July 2023. The included studies evaluated the effect of CME on survival. The primary outcome was long-term overall survival. Restricted mean survival time difference (RMSTD), hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used as pooled effect size measures. GRADE methodology was used to summarize the certainty of evidence. Results: Ten studies (3665 patients) were included. Overall, 1443 (39.4%) underwent CME. The RMSTD analysis shows that at 60-month follow-up, stage I–III CME patients lived 2.5 months (95% CI 1.1–4.1) more on average compared with noCME patients. Similarly, stage III patients that underwent CME lived longer compared to noCME patients at 55-month follow-up (6.1 months; 95% CI 3.4–8.5). The time-dependent HRs analysis for CME vs. noCME (stage I–III disease) shows a higher mortality hazard in patients with noCME at 6 months (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.29–0.71), 12 months (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.43–0.73), and 24 months (HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.57–0.92) up to 27 months. Conclusions: This study suggests that CME is associated with unclear OS benefit in stage I–III disease. Caution is recommended to avoid overestimation of the effect of CME in stage III disease since the marginal benefit of a more extended resection may have been influenced by tumor biology/molecular profile and multimodal adjuvant treatments. Bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are receiving increasing scientific interest because of the economic losses that they can cause in invaded areas. Nonetheless, there are a number of emerging pest species, belonging to different tribes, for which invasions have likely been overlooked in the past due to their inconspicuousness, taxonomic confusion and/or misidentification. In the summer of 2022, severe infestations by a bark beetle species belonging to the tribe Cryphalini were observed on mango (Mangifera indica L.) in Eastern Sicily (Italy). No information about bark beetle attacks on mango trees in Europe was available previously. However, the occurrence of a cryphaline bark beetle species causing rapid common fig tree (Ficus carica L.) dieback was reported for the same investigated area in 2014 and 2015. We aimed to identify the bark beetle species attacking mango and common figs, and to describe the fungal pathogens vectored by this beetle species. Our results revealed that the bark beetle species attacking mango and fig trees in the studied area is Cryphalus dilutus Eichhoff and that different fungal pathogens, i.e., species of Botryosphaeriaceae, Ceratocystis ficicola and Neocosmospora spp., are vectored by this beetle species. The damsel bug, Nabis pseudoferus Remane (Hemiptera: Namidae), is a generalist predator of small arthropods, including key insect pests of vegetable crops. In this study, we characterized the predation and development of various N. pseudoferus life stages when preying on the eggs and first‐ and fourth‐instar nymphs of the invasive South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). These findings were compared to those of the bug's common prey, cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Of the life stages tested, females showed the highest predation rate on all tested prey, due to their high longevity, large body, and great energy requirements for reproduction. The predator's oviposition rate was clearly influenced by prey type, and was highest when feeding on fourth instars of T. absoluta. Considering the zoophytophagy of most of the life stages of other mirid species of tomato, and the lower propensity of N. pseudoferus to feed on plants, these results show that this species can be considered as a key indigenous natural enemy for sustainable pest control packages against T. absoluta in newly invaded areas. Exotic ambrosia beetles are increasing in Europe due to global trade and global warming. Among these xylomycetophagous insects, Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a serious threat for several Mediterranean host plants. Carob trees growing in Sicily (Italy) have been extensively attacked by beetles leading to rapid tree decline. Although X. compactus has been found in Europe for several years, most aspects of its ecology are still unknown. We thus studied the population structure and dynamics of X. compactus, together with its twig size preference during a sampling of infested carob trees in south east Sicily. In addition, fungi associated with insects or galleries were isolated and characterized. The results showed that, in this newly-colonized environment and host plant, adult X. compactus overwinters inside twigs and starts to fly and reproduce in mid spring, completing five generations before overwintering in late fall. The mean diameter of carob twigs infested by the beetle varied significantly over the seasons, with the insect tending to infest larger twigs as season progresses. The mean number of adults/gallery was 19.21, ranging from 6 to 28. The minimum temperature significantly affected the overwintering adult mortality. Ambrosiella xylebori and Fusarium solani were the main symbionts associated with the pest in this study. Acremonium sp. was instead recorded for the first time in Europe inside X. compactus galleries. Several other fungi species were also found for the first time in association with X. compactus. The chive maggot, Bradysia odoriphaga Yang and Zhang (Diptera: Sciaridae) is an economically important insect pest, affecting many important vegetables, including Chinese chive, especially in northern China. Clothianidin is a second-generation of neonicotinoid insecticide that is currently used for the management of B. odoriphaga. In the present study, we investigated the development of resistance after continuous laboratory selection and associated fitness costs in B. odoriphaga against clothianidin insecticide. The results showed that B. odoriphaga population developed 76-fold resistance, following exposure with clothianidin insecticide for 10 generations. Similarly, life table analysis showed that the fecundity, along with male and female longevity in a resistant strain of B. odoriphaga was decreased significantly compared with the susceptible strain. The developmental duration of larvae and pupae were increased dramatically in the resistant strain, while no effects were observed on egg hatchability. Furthermore, the demographic parameters such as the intrinsic rate of increase (r) (d-1), net reproductive rate (R0) (offspring/individual) and finite rate of increase (?) (d-1) were found to be significantly decreased in the laboratory selected resistant population when compared with the susceptible strain of B. odoriphaga, in addition, only mean generation time (T) (d) increased significantly. These results suggest that B. odoriphaga responded quickly and develop a high level of resistance against clothianidin insecticide under continuous selection pressure. Biological control remains unutilized as yet in the framework of Drosophila suzukii Matsumura management. Although several parasitoid species attack the pest under laboratory conditions, information is lacking on their host-finding and dispersal capabilities in natural environments. We tested the effect of repeated parasitoid releases on D. suzukii populations in infested orchards. The pupal parasitoid Trichopria drosophilae (Perkins) was released on different crops at eight sites. Parasitism was monitored using traps placed at various distances from the parasitoid release point (RP). A second experiment was carried out under semi-field conditions to evaluate augmentation of the parasitoid. In both experiments, D. suzukii infestation was evaluated through fruit samplings, both from the plant, and from the ground. In the open field trials, T. drosophilae attacked D. suzukii in traps up to 40 m away from the RP, and pest emergence was significantly reduced within a radius of 10 m at seven out of eight sites. In the semi-field trials, parasitoid releases significantly reduced D. suzukii emergence from ground-sampled fruit, and augmentation enhanced parasitism, increasing the numbers of parasitoids emerging from host pupae. Functional response describes the number of prey or hosts attacked by a predator or parasitoid as a function of prey or host density. Using three different experimental designs, we found a linear functional response by two insect parasitoids (the pteromalid Pachycrepoideus vindemiae and the diapriid Trichopria drosophilae) to their hosts (the drosophilids Drosophila suzukii and D. melanogaster). A linear function response is considered unusual for insect parasitoids. The first design was a ‘fixed time within patch experiment’ where individual parasitoids were exposed to a range of host densities for 24 h; the second two designs were a ‘variable time functional response’ and a ‘selective functional response’ experiments where individual parasitoids were presented with a range of host patches and allowed to freely select and explore only one patch (variable time) or forage for 24 h (selective). In all experimental designs, the number of hosts parasitized increased linearly until reaching an upper limit. Under the laboratory conditions used, the functional response of P. vindemiae was limited by its egg supply and time (host handling time) whereas T. drosophilae was limited by time only. The linear functional response by both parasitoids likely resulted from a constant attack rate and an incremental foraging strategy where the parasitoids left a poor (low density) host patch or remained in a higher quality host patch when there was successful oviposition and adequate host density. BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a rare tumor and represents less than 5% of all thyroid cancers. Tumor size and the presence of possible metastases are strictly related to serum calcitonin level, which also suggests prognosis. A serum calcitonin level above the normal range is highly suspicious for medullary cancer. This tumor has no characteristic patterns on ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration, so serum calcitonin level is the only significant element for diagnosis. The literature contains 47 cases of serum calcitonin-negative medullary thyroid cancer with heterogeneous behavior, ranging from non-aggressive to aggressive form. CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of a young man with negative serum calcitonin but with lateral cervical node metastases from medullary thyroid carcinoma. At the beginning, diagnosis was not achieved due to normal range of serum calcitonin and a negative thyroid ultrasonography for large nodules. Nevertheless, in another medical center he underwent a neck biopsy of the lateral cervical mass. The histologic findings showed metastases of medullary thyroid cancer. Therefore, a total thyroidectomy plus cervical lymphadenectomy was performed. During the follow-up, due to unusefulness of serum markers, and as CEA levels were negative pre- and post-operatively, an ¹⁸F-DOPA PET scan was performed. In 3 years of follow-up, there is still no evidence of disease relapse. CONCLUSIONS: Our case shows how a normal serum level of calcitonin cannot exclude medullary thyroid cancer. Early diagnosis is crucial because it influences appropriate surgical therapy and patient outcome. The current lack of an optimal strategy for the diagnosis and postoperative follow-up for patients with negative serum calcitonin tumor presents a diagnostic challenge for physicians. With the invasion or local occurrence of Bemisia tabaci and Tuta absoluta in recent decades, they both have become two major insect pests of tomato crops in many countries. The biological control of these two pests through heteropteran predators, e.g., Nesidiocoris tenuis or Macrolophus pygmaeus, is a key pest management strategy. However, by contrast to M. pygmaeus, N. tenuis could usually cause plant damage and yield loss. The joint use of these two mirids for pest management has not been described yet, although it may be helpful in reducing the side effects of N. tenuis on crop (owing to competitive and/or agonistic interactions between the two species). In this study, we compared the abundance of predators and pests in treatments with N. tenuis and M. pygmaeus together versus N. tenuis alone and in the presence of B. tabaci only or B. tabaci and T. absoluta. We also measured necrotic rings and tomato flower production in these four treatments. We found that the joint use of both mirid predators together led to (1) a reduced overall mirid density and (2) a sustained biocontrol efficiency, when compared to the use of N. tenuis alone. In addition, plant feeding activities of mirids were significantly reduced when predators were used jointly (vs. N. tenuis alone). The applicability of zoophytophagous predators as biocontrol agents could be facilitated by simultaneously releasing two (or more) heteropteran predator species instead of a single one. Zoophytophagous hemipteran predators provide relevant biological control services and their applications are consolidated in greenhouse pest management. The use of plant essential oils (EOs) for sustainable crop protection is being currently promoted. However, further knowledge of the potential side effects of EOs on predatory mirids (Hemiptera: Miridae) is required. Here, we evaluated the non-target impact of four EOs (anise, fennel, garlic and lavender) on the generalist predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) in the laboratory. The baseline toxicity of EOs was firstly assessed on N. tenuis adults following topical contact exposure. Then, the predator reproduction and orientation behavior was tested following the exposure to three estimated EO lethal concentrations (LC1, LC10 and LC30). Garlic EO had the lowest estimated LCs (e.g., LC30 1.34 mg mL−1), being thus the most toxic compound among the tested EOs. The estimated LC30s for lavender, anise and fennel EOs were 2.75, 4.55 and 5.17 mg mL−1, respectively. The fertility and the orientation behavior of N. tenuis females was negatively affected by all the EOs at the highest tested concentration. Nevertheless, anise EO at LC1 and LC10 caused no sublethal effects on N. tenuis. The invasive spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Dipt.: Drosophilidae), a native of East Asia, has widely established in North America and Europe, where it is a serious pest of small and stone fruit crops. The lack of effective indigenous parasitoids of D. suzukii in the recently colonized regions prompted the first foreign exploration for co-evolved parasitoids in South Korea during 2013 and 2014. We collected the larval parasitoids Asobara japonica Belokobylskij, A. leveri (Nixon) and A. brevicauda Guerrieri & van Achterberg (Hym.: Braconidae) , Ganaspis brasiliensis (Ihering), Leptopilina japonica japonica Novković & Kimura and L. j. formosana Novković & Kimura (Hym.: Figitidae); and the pupal parasitoids Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Rondani) (Hym.: Pteromalidae) and Trichopria drosophilae Perkins (Hym.: Diapriidae). From UC Berkeley quarantine records, percentage parasitism ranged from 0 to 17.1 % and varied by geography, season, and collection methods. Asobara japonica was the most common parasitoid species. Higher numbers of parasitoids were reared from field-picked fruit as opposed to traps baited with uninfested fruit. Quarantine bioassays confirmed that A. japonica, G. brasiliensis, L. j. japonica, P. vindemiae, and T. drosophilae developed from D. suzukii. Female individuals of the endoparasitoid, A. japonica, were larger when reared on the larger D. suzukii larvae compared with those reared on the smaller larvae of D. melanogaster Meigen. Larger parasitoid size was associated with longer developmental time. Several of the South Korean parasitoid species have the potential for use in classical biological control and may contribute to the suppression of D. suzukii in the newly invaded regions. Drosophila suzukii is a serious pest of several fruit crop systems in California's Central Valley, which is one of the world's major fruit-growing regions. This study followed D. suzukii seasonal population dynamics in multiple cropping and riparian systems in four cherry-producing counties of the Valley. Apple cider vinegar baited traps were used to monitor D. suzukii adults weekly, from April 2013 to July 2014, in 28 fields. Results show peak captures in the spring and fall seasons. In cherry orchards, adult trap counts were the highest near harvest (June) and declined thereafter, as fly populations moved to other crop (e.g., citrus) or non-crop habitats. The number of captured adults was positively related between pairs of sampled sites based on their proximity but was negatively related to differences in fruit ripening periods between different crops, suggesting that fly populations moved among crop and/or non-crop habitats during the year or had varying population dynamics on different crops and in different seasons. Mature egg load per female was higher during the fruiting season but lower during the winter season, with the majority of winter-captured females not containing mature eggs. This survey also reports for the first time the presence of trapped D. suzukii adults bearing melanized and encapsulated parasitoids in North America, non-target captures of larval drosophilid parasitoids in the traps, as well as the occurrence of larvae in the ovaries of adult female D. suzukii. Two generalist pupal drosophilid parasitoids, Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Rondani) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and Trichopria drosophilae Perkins (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae), are sympatric and among only a few parasitoid species attacking the invasive Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in many regions of the world. In this study, we evaluated their foraging efficiency when attacking D. suzukii infesting cherry fruit in a laboratory cage experiment; and we examined their potential interspecific interactions, including outcomes of intrinsic competition, host discrimination, and the impact of their interaction on pest control. We show that both parasitoids readily parasitized D. suzukii pupae located inside fruit or buried in soil. However, T. drosophilae was more efficient than P. vindemiae and that parasitism by either parasitoid species was higher in the fruit than in the soil. Generally, the parasitoid species that oviposited first in the host out-competed the later parasitoid in multi-parasitized hosts, we assume, through physiological suppression. Both parasitoids discriminated against hosts parasitized previously by the other species. In an additive-series design experiment with single ( D. suzukii ) or two ( D. suzukii and Drosophila melanogaster Meigen) host species, T. drosophilae performed similarly regardless of the presence of a competitor, while P. vindemiae achieved a higher parasitism when alone. The observed parasitism when the two parasitoid species were present together was always lower than the expected one, assuming each species acted independently. The Asian vinegar fly Drosophila suzukii (spotted wing Drosophila [SWD]) has emerged as a major invasive insect pest of small and stone fruits in both the Americas and Europe since the late 2000s. While research efforts have rapidly progressed in Asia, North America, and Europe over the past 5 years, important new insights may be gained in comparing and contrasting findings across the regions affected by SWD. In this review, we explore common themes in the invasion biology of SWD by examining (1) its biology and current pest status in endemic and recently invaded regions; (2) current efforts and future research needs for the development of predictive models for its geographic expansion; and (3) prospects for both natural and classical (=importation) biological control of SWD in invaded habitats, with emphasis on the role of hymenopteran parasitoids. We conclude that particularly fruitful areas of research should include fundamental studies of its overwintering, host-use, and dispersal capabilities; as well as applied studies of alternative, cost-effective management techniques to complement insecticide use within the integrated pest management framework. Finally, we emphasize that outreach efforts are critical to effective SWD management by highlighting successful strategies and insights gained from various geographic regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is among the most invasive ambrosia beetles causing severe damage to host plants belonging to various ecosystems. Foundress females excavate galleries into the plant xylem introducing mutualistic ambrosia fungi which are the exclusive food source for their offspring. The cryptic habits of this fungus-farming insect and its wide host range facilitated its rapid spreading worldwide. Despite several advances in deepening the bio-ecology of this beetle, there is still a general lack of information about effective control strategies. In this context, microbials, such as antagonistic bacteria and mycoparasitic fungi, can have the potential to act as alternative management tools. Here, we evaluated, for the first time, the potential of commercially available microbial agents for suppressing the growth of the main beetle mutualist, Ambrosiella xylebori, and consequently to hamper the beetle progeny development. The antagonistic activity of five Trichoderma and two Bacillus -based biofungicides was first evaluated in vitro by means of dual-culture experiments in Petri dishes. Then, beetle bioassays were conducted by exposing carob twigs, previously treated with different concentrations of each biofungicide, to beetle foundresses. Tested microbial antagonists significantly suppressed the growth of A. xylebori on Petri dishes. A significant reduction of the beetle progeny was observed in galleries of treated twigs compared to controls. The higher reduction in mutualist growth and brood production was obtained within galleries of T. atroviride treated twigs. Simple Summary: When an alien species reaches a new environment, the natural enemies present in that habitat might fail to regulate its population as they might not be host-adapted. Hence, the best solution might be the use of alien biological control agents that are co-evolved with the exotic pest in question. This is the case of Halyomorpha halys, which is native to Asia and has recently invaded Europe and the Americas. Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus mitsukurii are among its main parasitoids. Adventive populations of the latter were found in Northern Italy, suggesting its employment within augmentative biological control. Homologous programs with T. japonicus are already ongoing in Italy. This procedure implies releasing the parasitoid to increase its population and spread to new areas invaded by H. halys. However, a fundamental aspect that must be investigated is the risk-assessment beforehand, i.e., the systematic process of identifying the hazard associated with such a procedure. In this context, the preference of T. japonicus and T. mitsukurii between two stinkbugs was evaluated in this study. We found that T. japonicus preferred the naturally released traces of H. halys while T. mitsukurii exhibited a higher preference for the natural and synthetic chemical cues of N. viridula. Trissolcus mitsukurii and Trissolcus japonicus are two Asian egg parasitoids associated with different pentatomids such as Halyomorpha halys. Adventive populations of T. mitsukurii were found in Northern Italy, suggesting its employment as a biological control agent (BCA) against H. halys. Nevertheless, to reduce the latter's population, T. japonicus was released in Italy. Releasing an exotic parasitoid requires investigating the interaction between the BCA and the environment to avoid negative impacts on the entomofauna of the new habitat. Trissolcus mitsukurii is mainly associated with Nezara viridula in its native area. Therefore, we investigated and compared the ability of female T. mitsukurii and T. japonicus to distinguish between naturally released cues of H. halys and N. viridula. A single parasitoid was exposed to contact kairomones of both pests to evaluate its modifications in orthokinetic and locomotory behaviour. The behaviour of female T. mitsukurii was also tested on synthetic compounds simulating the cues of the two pentatomids. When naturally released cues were used, T. japonicus preferred the traces of H. halys, while T. mitsukurii preferred N. viridula's cues. Moreover, the attraction of T. mitsukurii to N. viridula's cues was confirmed with synthetic cues. Additional studies are needed to judge if this parasitoid can be used as a BCA. This systematic review aims to understand better the translation of laparoscopic psychomotor skills, acquired in dry lab training, into a direct patient benefit in actual clinical practice in the operating room. The review was performed according to PRISMA guidance, searching database-specific filters for controlled trials: 'laparoscopy', 'simulator', 'surgical training', 'dry lab', 'psychomotor skills'. We included only RCTs in which the study population was the surgical trainee or novice surgeon with no prior simulation training, and the intervention was simulation training in laparoscopic surgery, regardless of subspecialty. Ten studies were included in this systematic review. The mean performance score was higher compared to the control groups. Fewer errors were noted in the intervention groups. No clinical patient outcomes (mortality, morbidity, quality of life) were addressed in these studies. All the trials were at high risk of bias. Training outside the operating room may lead to better surgical performance and less operative time. Nevertheless, additional studies with better designs are needed to provide more robust evidence. Pachycrepoideus vindemiae and Trichopria drosophilae are cosmopolitan pupal parasitoids of Drosophilidae that attack the invasive Drosophila suzukii. This study investigated one aspect of their plasticity – host acceptance and offspring fitness on 25 Drosophila species in a phylogenetic framework. Each parasitoid's key biological and ecological traits were compared among the different host species. Results demonstrate that both parasitoid species successfully parasitized and developed from all tested host species. Although the parasitoids' efficiency and offspring fitness varied among host species, effects on life-history characteristics or ecological traits appeared to be unrelated to the phylogenetic position of tested host species. Both parasitoids benefited from attacking larger hosts, with body size of emerging progeny positively correlated to host size and an increased fecundity (mature egg load) of female wasps. Achieving larger body size came at no significant costs in immature development time. Results show remarkable levels of plasticity in the parasitoids' body growth and development. Body size plasticity in T. drosophilae and P. vindemiae could improve biological control by increasing variation in parasitoid body sizes. Large size may not be advantageous under all conditions, however, and the parasitoids' ecoservice impacts will be influenced not only by their plasticity to hosts but by environmental limitations such as temperature tolerances, habitat location, and host searching behaviors. Alternative host plants are among the key factors influencing the spread of invasive pests because they are utilized as a food source and provide shelter in unfavorable conditions. The South American tomato pinworm (SATP), Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), has a high behavioral and physiological plasticity enabling it to rapidly spread in several countries. Among the multiple strategies used by SATP in the invasion process is the use of alternative host plants including black nightshade (BNS), Solanum nigrum L. (Solanaceae), a perennial plant widely distributed across all habitats worldwide. Besides the life table and behavioral parameters of SATP on tomato, its survival and reproduction in low temperatures on alternative host plants should be assessed to evaluate the likely spread in temperate regions with harsh winters. In our study, comparing solanaceous species through generations, the primary difference was in the mean generation time with SATP reared on BNS, whereby it had a longer development time than larvae and pupae reared on tomato plants. Adults preferred tomato plants even if they had been reared as larvae on BNS. Exposure periods of 7, 14, and 21 days to 4 °C indicated that more than 50% of SATP pupae reared on BNS plants survived more than 14 days. The survival of SATP reared on tomato plants exceeded 21 days and after exposure to 4 °C, females reared on both plants remained fertile. The life table and behavioral parameters recorded demonstrated a significant potential of BNS to support the development of SATP, also at low temperature. Therefore, even with effective border surveillance and phytosanitation processes in place, invasion through an alternative host is possible and difficult to detect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
