Physics education in secondary schools can include biophysics topics as electives. An open simulation based on a simulation like Minecraft for learning the workings of the action potential in human cells was designed and tested for students in upper secondary physics education. In small design and test cycles both the simulation engine and the classroom materials were developed. The simulation shows realistic results that go beyond the accompanying textbook. The finished prototype of the engine and the materials were used to study student reasoning during their simulation of the action potential. Results show that students reason together about what they see in the simulation to come to theories on the action potential process, showing profound learning. The students did not master the more open inquiry final assignment.

Many studies have shown a decrease in scientific interest with an increase in age. Since interest is linked to a high degree of deep-level learning, it is of great relevance to foster interest in science. This study investigates interest in biology from 7th, 9th, and 12th grade students in Germany (N=257). Results show a significantly lower interest in 9th grade in comparison to 7th grade, but a significantly higher level of interest in 12th grade compared to 9th grade. This increase could potentially be linked to the fact that students can chose to continue taking biology in upper secondary education, which leads them to be more interested in the subject. In order to increase interest in 9th grade students, a one-day intervention in an out-of-school student laboratory was developed. During the intervention, students conducted hands-on experiments to investigate the field of bionics. Students in 7th and 9th grade (N=121) participated in the intervention. An increase in interest in biology was observed in both grades. This highlights the potential of out-of-school laboratories to foster and develop interest. Future studies should investigate if the same effect is achieved using in-school interventions as well as looking at possible long-term effects.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected almost all aspects of our lives, including the education sector and the way of teaching and learning. In March 2020, health authorities in Brazil imposed social isolation and the interruption of on-site activities in schools and universities. In this context, the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), one of the largest universities in Brazil and Latin America, developed an emergency remote learning (ERL) plan that allowed the return of classes in an online format and supported students to obtain access to equipment and internet network. Within this new perspective, the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) program of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics (DFIB) explored strategies to minimize the impact of the absence of face-to-face classes. Using different available tools in online platforms and social media such as Microsoft Teams, YouTube animated video classes, and Instagram, the UTA program assisted >500 undergraduate students and strongly supported professors during ERL. In just over a year, our video classes on YouTube Channel reached [approximately]40,000 views. Most of the students reported that their questions were fully and quickly solved by the UTA program. Collectively, our results indicate that the strategies implemented by the UTA program helped the undergraduate students and professors to adapt to a remote learning format.

One of the successes of learning is the formation of thinking skills and understanding. Therefore in this study the formative assessment is implemented through Understanding by Design (UbD). The research objective is to find out the formation of understanding and to analyze the correlation between formative assessments and UbD. The study used quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. Formative assessment strategies used were presentations, discussions, practicum learning, mind-mapping, and analyzing articles. The results of the study found that there was a significant increase in understanding after the implementation of formative assessment through UbD and a positive correlation between formative assessment and understanding. Formative assessment integrated into UbD is the originality of this research.

There is interest in admission criteria that predict future success in biomedical graduate school programs, but identifying predictors of PhD attainment is inherently complex. In particular, high noncompletion rates of PhD programs have long been recognized as a major crisis. Here, we present a quantitative analysis of the PhD students enrolled in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Texas A&M University between 1980 and 2010. The input variables included sex, country of citizenship, undergraduate grade point average (GPA), and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning). Only GPA was a significant predictor of PhD completion based on logistic regression. We also examined associations involving nonbinary measures of success (PhD duration, first author, and total number of publications) among students who completed a PhD. GPA was again associated with the PhD duration. No enrollment variable was strongly associated with publication output. Despite potential limitations, this analysis is the first to suggest an undergraduate GPA association with PhD completion in life sciences. These results from a large state university in a predominantly rural area expand the range of programs from which such analyses have been reported.

Biological examples have been used to increase innovation in design activities and design education. And biologically inspired design has been studied in mechanical engineering using biological functions and principles as source domains. However, there were few studies regarding shape-based biological design in industrial design; furthermore, the openness of the source and target domains was vague. This study tries to explore shape-based biological design with closed source domain and closed target domain. In addition, this study aims to figure out students' difficulties and defects in bionics design to promote design education. Third-year undergraduate students, graduate students, and experts whose backgrounds are industrial design were invited to be participants in the study. Participants of each expertise level were divided into two groups and were given whole and segmented pictures of white sharks individually to design electric cars. Outcome-based validation was chosen to measure the effect of analogy. Multivariate ANOVA was used to evaluate the effect of expertise level and source domain completeness on the results. The findings showed that presenting designers with segmented pictures can increase the number of biological elements and details in the solution. However, there appeared to be no significant difference between the novelty of the work, whether the group received complete or segmented images. Novice designers were more innovative and preferred to use more biological elements during ideation than the experts, while the latter tended to use fewer elements of biology and generated solutions with a higher level of abstraction. For design education, the findings will give teachers advice on how to train and inspire their students in bionics design. For the design industry, segmented biological images can increase the elements used and the details in the sketches. In addition, the evaluation metrics for shape-based BID established in this study can help designers and manufacturers in terms of production.

Circular dichroism (CD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized light. It arises from molecular electron oscillations that are driven by both the light's electric and magnetic fields, where the effects are in phase for one circular polarization and out of phase for the other. We describe these interactions, which have not been presented at an intuitive level before, with classical and quantum treatments. A rotational average of the latter solution leads to the Rosenfeld equation, which underlies most CD research. We illustrate its use with a chiral version of a harmonic oscillator, which we then apply to the far-ultraviolet CD of protein [alpha]-helices. This presentation is aimed at the level of upper-division undergraduates and could be usefully incorporated into a physical chemistry course.

Biological organisms function as the result of a multitude of complex physical systems all interacting with one another at different length scales and over different time scales. At stages of education below university undergraduate level, this complexity often prevents the discussion of physics within a biological context, subtly implying that the two fields are completely distinct from one another. With science becoming steadily more interdisciplinary at the level of research, this distinction can therefore be quite counterproductive, and potentially even misleading for students with regard to the nature of the scientific method. To explore the interplay between biology and physics with prospective STEM students, we present a series of formal teaching activities utilising a novel piece of experimental equipment we have designed called BioNetGrid. We are able to use BioNetGrid to cover a range of physical concepts at an introductory level, such as Hooke's law, springs in series and parallel, Poisson's ratio, elastic modulus and energy distribution. These can be presented together with specific biological systems as examples, such as biopolymer networks, enabling a discussion of the importance of biophysics in research at an earlier stage in a student's academic career.

The article substantiates the necessity of studying the peculiarities of color vision of human in the course "Biophysics" that have been integrated into many types of higher education institutions. It describes the experience of teaching this discipline in a pedagogical higher education institution. The article presents a brief review of the most compelling existing color vision hypotheses, according to the authors mind: G. Allen, P. Lucas and N. Domini, which are mainly associated with the appearance of color perception with dietary habits of human ancestors, and a fundamentally different assumptions of M. Changizi, whereby the color perception was necessary for a human for a good communication with their own kind for the evaluation of skin tones. In this article is observed the system of the educational experiment research of the functioning of the color perception system of the human eye, as a natural addition to the proposed hypotheses. An experimental study model of a fragment of the retina is proposed, and a laboratory work on the study of a system of a colour human perception, the study of a photobiological paradox of vision by the example of a study model of the opaque lens (cataract). The subject results of its use in a pedagogical university are debated. All this allows us to focus on a caring attitude for human biotic sensory systems in aggressive abiotic influences. It is especially important in teachers training, aimed at training and raising a healthy younger generation. The authors also consider it necessary to acquaint future teachers with the authors of the various theories of color vision and the curricula vitae of the authors of the various discoveries, because this allows enhancing an interest in the study course.

In this paper the muscular activity will be treated from a physical point of view, considering the main physical parameters that can be quantified. A brief and simple theoretical treatment will be followed by some homeworks for students. The problems have a difficulty degree typical of an undergraduate class, and the arguments have been chosen just as examples straddling biology and physics. The goal of this work is to train biological area students to use and handle quantitative methods.

In an attempt to exploit the concept of mindfulness for educational contexts, we investigated the role of dispositional mindfulness as an internal resource for the development of situational interest. Using an online questionnaire, we assessed participants' (N = 161, mean age = 30.4 years, 74% female, 66% university students) mindfulness, presented them with a text on bionics, and asked them to indicate their situational interest regarding the material (t1). One week later, they indicated their maintained situational interest (t2). Findings reveal a positive relationship between mindfulness and situational interest at t1, especially with regard to participants' ability to be momentarily 'present' and affective aspects of situational interest. Furthermore, we found an indirect effect of mindfulness on maintained situational interest at t2 via participants' interest at t1. These findings were independent from participants' initial interest and knowledge. Contrary to our expectation, we did not find a moderation effect for mindfulness on the relation between situational interest at t1 and t2. We discuss these findings in terms of implications for formal learning contexts.

There remains a strong movement for Introductory Physics for Life Sciences (IPLS) courses to better integrate physics and biology. Part of the challenge for IPLS educators is to introduce fundamental physical law while simultaneously establishing the relevance of physics to biological science. Life science relevant laboratory experiences are essential to the training of future biologists and health professionals. The physiology of neurotransmission can be especially challenging to life science majors, but may be somewhat clarified in the IPLS course by model circuit labs. A realistic axon model lab using rubber tubing and gelatin recently reported by Dyer highlights the motivational value of lab experiences bridging biophysics and neurophysiology. Time-independent and time-dependent circuit labs modeling passive spread of charge within an axon absent the action potential have been described. In this paper, we describe a progressive complex circuit lab sequence introducing students to Kirchhoff's rules, a model of the cell membrane resting potential, and a model representing key features of the action potential in an axon. In this context, "complex" describes a circuit that cannot be reduced to a single battery and resistor.

The importance of including concepts, examples, and techniques from mathematics and the physical and information sciences in biology courses to fulfill the need of today's undergraduates has been the principle motivation for developing interdisciplinary biology-focused courses. Although this movement started many years ago, developing and offering courses like biophysics is still new in many liberal arts colleges. Taking advantage of the experiences gained by introducing an interdisciplinary course, simply titled Biophysics, this paper was developed to present the adapted structure, challenges, and useful factors to further develop such a course in order to heighten students' retention of the material. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual framework with related analysis methodologies that identifies the influence of social environment on an established cropping system. Design/Methodology/Approach: A stratified survey including 103 villages and 823 farmers was conducted in all districts of Haryana (India). Firstly, technical efficiency (TE) was modeled using biophysical data including grain yield, seeding rate, wheat varieties, tillage, sowing date, seed source, harvesting method and the application of fertilizer, herbicide and irrigation. The relationship between TE and social community factors such as farm size, farmer age, level of education and agricultural support programs was analyzed by regression tree. Findings: TE was lower with the farmers who only have education to a primary standard. Farmers with high TE scores were mostly between 35 and 40 years of age, and a higher TE association was common for farmers who use technical publications. Social individual factors such as farmers' views on the future of farming were also analyzed across different TE levels. Practical implications: Farmers with lower TE are an obvious target for production improvement, particularly given the understanding that the overall production yield gap is small in Haryana. Theoretical implications: Our conceptual framework shows a quantitative way to establish the socio-ecological linkage, and to identify the opportunities for changes in management with extension services leading to productivity improvement. Originality/Value: This paper provides a novel framework with detailed methodology to effectively identify the socio-economic factors that limit the biophysical production in an agricultural system.

Heteronuclear multidimensional NMR techniques are commonly used to study protein structure, function, and dynamics, yet they are rarely taught at the undergraduate level. Here, we describe a senior undergraduate laboratory where students collect, process, and analyze heteronuclear multidimensional NMR experiments using an unstudied Ig domain (Ig2 of human obscurin) in order to sequence-specifically assign this domain. In this way, this project-oriented laboratory tries to simulate an authentic biomolecular NMR research experience. Through the semester, students gain a more thorough understanding of both the specific technical aspects of multidimensional NMR analysis and the process by which raw data are converted into sequence-specific secondary structural information.

At the botanical garden of the University of Würzburg, we conducted practical lessons on bionics, focused on the lotus effect, with 260 students. Those approx. 14 years old, 8th-grade mid-level students were divided into two groups. During an instructional discussion about the topic, one group was confronted with their alternative conceptions (AC), whereas the other group was not (NAC). Both groups were treated equally, following the experimental phase and results discussion. Questionnaires were used to measure conceptual change in a pre-, post- and retention test design. Both groups changed their conceptions in short-term similarly. Over a long-term period, the NAC group showed significantly higher knowledge than the AC group. We discuss that the methodology of the alternative conception confrontation should be selected very carefully by the teacher, as this step is the most delicate within the whole conceptual change process.

Diffusion is critical to physiological processes ranging from gas exchange across alveoli to transport within individual cells. In the classroom, however, it can be challenging to convey the concept of diffusion on the microscopic scale. In this article, we present a series of three exercises that use food and cooking to illustrate diffusion theory and Fick's first law. These exercises are part of a 10-wk undergraduate course that uses food and cooking to teach fundamental concepts in physiology and biophysics to students, including nonscience majors. Consistent demonstration of practical applications in a classroom setting has the potential to fundamentally change how students view the role of science in their lives (15).

Improving the scientific literacy of non-scientists is an important aim, both because of the ever-increasing impact of science on our lives and because understanding science enriches our experience of the natural world. One route to improving scientific literacy is via general education undergraduate courses--i.e. courses for students not majoring in the sciences or engineering. Because it encompasses a variety of important scientific concepts, demonstrates connections between basic science and real-world applications and illustrates the creative ways in which scientific insights develop, biophysics is a useful subject with which to promote scientific literacy. I describe here a course on biophysics for non-science-major undergraduates recently developed at the University of Oregon (Eugene, OR, USA), noting its design, which spans both macroscopic and microscopic topics, and the specific content of a few of its modules. I also describe evidence-based pedagogical approaches adopted in teaching the course and aspects of course enrollment and evaluation.

We investigate the development of expert identities through the use of the sociocultural perspective of learning as participating in a community of practice. An ethnographic case study of biophysics graduate students focuses on the experiences the students have in their research group meetings. The analysis illustrates how the communities of practice-based identity constructs of competencies characterize student expert membership. A microanalysis of speech, sound, tones, and gestures in video data characterize students' social competencies in the physics community of practice. Results provide evidence that students at different stages of their individual projects have opportunities to develop social competencies such as mutual engagement, negotiability of the repertoire, and accountability to the enterprises as they interact with group members. The biophysics research group purposefully designed a learning trajectory including conducting research and writing it for publication in the larger community of practice as a pathway to expertise. The students of the research group learn to become socially competent as specific experts of their project topic and methodology, ensuring acceptance, agency, and membership in their community of practice. This work expands research on physics expertise beyond the cognitive realm and has implications for how to design graduate learning experiences to promote expert identity development.

Professionals in the environmental domain require cognitive interdisciplinary skills to be able to develop sustainable solutions to environmental problems. We demonstrate that education in environmental systems analysis allows for the development of these skills. We identify three components of cognitive interdisciplinary skills: (1) the ability to understand environmental issues in a holistic way, taking into account the interplay of social and biophysical dynamics; (2) the ability to connect both the analysis of environmental problems and the devising of solutions with relevant disciplinary knowledge and methodologies; and (3) the ability to reflect on the role of scientific research in solving societal problems. Environmental systems analysis provides tools, methods, and models to assist in framing complex environmental issues in a holistic way and facilitates the integration of disciplines. Systems analysis also supports reflection by making students aware that a system always represents a simplified model and a particular perspective. Through the analysis of a collection of bachelor of science students' "reflection papers", we identify two major challenges in teaching these cognitive skills: (1) to train students to not just follow a systematic approach but acquire a systemic view and (2) to train students to be reflexive about systems analysis and the role of science. We recommend that training in cognitive skills starts early in a study program.

Embryonic development offers a unique perspective on the function of many biological processes because of embryos' heightened sensitivity to environmental factors. This hands-on lesson investigates the effects of elevated vitamin A on the morphogenesis of chicken embryos. The active form of vitamin A (retinoic acid) is applied to shell-less (ex ovo) cultured chick embryos, which are highly accessible and intrinsically spawn inquiry. The student activities mirror the scientific research process, including review of scientific literature, hypothesis formation, experimental design, interpretation of data, and re-evaluation of the initial hypothesis. This exercise supports instruction on developmental biology, biophysics, animal research, and experimental design and is motivated by a clinically relevant health issue.

Rosalind Franklin, a chemical physicist (1920-1958), used x-ray diffraction to determine the structure of DNA. What exactly could she read out from her x-ray pattern, shown in Fig. 1? In lecture notes dated November 1951, R. Franklin wrote the following: "The results suggest a helical structure (which must be very closely packed) containing 2, 3 or 4 co-axial nucleic acid chains per helical unit, and having the phosphate groups near the outside." This was 16 months before J. D. Watson and F. Crick published their description of DNA, which was based on R. Franklin's x-ray photos. How they gained access to her x-ray photos is a fascinating tale of clashing personalities and male chauvinism. (Contains 1 table and 5 figures.)

Laboratory experiments that focus on protein folding provide excellent opportunities for undergraduate students to learn important topics in the expanding interdisciplinary field of biophysics. Here, we describe the use of Stern-Volmer plots to determine the extent of solvent accessibility of the single tryptophan residue (trp-59) in unfolded and partially unfolded states of the well-studied protein cytochrome "c" (cyt "c"). Comparison of quenching efficiencies for free tryptophan in solution and partially buried in cyt "c" highlights the persistence of residual structure in unfolded proteins and deepens students' understanding of protein structures and dynamics. The experiment builds on our previous laboratory module that probed thermodynamics and structures of cyt "c"; collectively, these protein-folding experiments and related topics provide physical chemistry students with opportunities to explore a comprehensive set of spectroscopy and biophysics tools. This paper describes theory and experiments, taken from biophysics and physiological measurements, to illustrate the technique of signal averaging. In the process, students are introduced to the basic concepts of signal processing, such as digital filtering, Fourier transformation, baseline correction, pink and Gaussian noise, and the cross- and autocorrelation functions. From these computations, the students estimate physically interesting parameters such as the pulse rate and blood flow velocity. They also learn about some of the pitfalls encountered in quantifying the signal and noise components for a meaningful computation of the signal-to-noise ratio. (Contains 14 figures.)

Because quantitative biology requires skills and concepts from a disparate collection of different disciplines, the scientists of the near future will increasingly need to rely on collaborations to produce results. Correspondingly, students in disciplines impacted by quantitative biology will need to be taught how to create and engage in such collaborations. In response to this important curricular need, East Tennessee State University and Georgia Technological University/Emory University cooperated in an unprecedented curricular experiment in which theoretically oriented students at East Tennessee State designed biophysical models that were implemented and tested experimentally by biomedical engineers at the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Technological University and Emory University. Implementing the collaborations between two institutions allowed an assessment of the student collaborations from before the groups of students had met for the first time until after they had finished their projects, thus providing insight about the formation and conduct of such collaborations that could not have been obtained otherwise. We have realized that our Biology undergraduate students learn biological concepts as established truths without awareness of the body of experimental evidence supporting the emerging models as usually presented in handbooks and texts in general. Therefore, we have implemented a laboratory practice in our course of Physiology and Biophysics, aimed to introduce the students in the way the scientific models and theories are built, through the measurement of Na[superscript +] transport in frog skin. Transepithelial Na[superscript +] transport was assessed in the frog skin, with measurements of short circuit currents. The mucosal Na[superscript +] and serosal K[superscript +] concentrations were modified and the effects were recorded. These effects were reversible. Addition of a drug that blocks epithelial Na[superscript +] channels (amiloride) to the mucosal side solution abolished the short circuit current. Sodium fluxes were calculated, and the results were adjusted to Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The impact of the proposed practice on the students is discussed. (Contains 5 figures and 1 table.)

Bacteria are ubiquitous in our world. From our homes, to our work environment, to our own bodies, bacteria are the omnipresent although often unobserved companions to human life. Physicists are typically untroubled professionally by the presence of these bacteria, as their study usually falls safely outside the realm of our typical domain. In the last 10 years, however, several events have occurred that demand the attention of the general populace--including the ranks of physicists among them.

Microbial fuel cells are a current research area that harvests electricity from bacteria capable of anaerobic respiration. Graphite is an electrically conductive material that bacteria can respire on, thus it can be used to capture electrons from bacteria. When bacteria transfer electrons to graphite, an electrical potential is created that can produce electricity when in a circuit. A sediment battery is a simple circuit that uses graphite and anaerobic bacteria naturally found in dirt. The electrical potential produced by bacterial respiration on the graphite can be measured on a voltmeter and thus can be used as a visual aid for teaching cellular respiration. The combination of the need for a new learning tool and the expertise of the scientists led to the development of the laboratory exercise described in this article. It uses student-designed sediment batteries to better visualize and measure electron transfer in living cells. This exercise satisfies National Science Education Teaching Standards A and B, and Content Standards A, B, and C. (Contains 4 figures.)

In this article we recount our experiences of teaching photosynthesis in an integrated way to secondary school students and teachers, science undergraduates and postgraduates. Conceptual questions were posed to investigate learners' fundamental understanding of simple light-dependent and light-independent processes taught to most students at secondary level and beyond. We found that students did not grasp main concepts and could not apply basic knowledge to answer simple questions about photosynthesis even after multiple exposures to the topics. We attribute these shortcomings to rote learning and master-disciple relationship generally practised in Thailand. We propose here a change of emphasis from teaching to learning, especially, self-learning, collaborative learning, self-reflection and integration of knowledge by self. Corrective suggestions are given about changing the common practices of teaching/learning with a cognizance of the present and future era of easy access to electronic information and globalization where life-long learning, problem solving skills, originality and creativity hold keys to success.

The heating of tissues by diagnostic ultrasound can pose a significant hazard particularly in the imaging of the unborn child. The demonstration of the temperature field in tissue is therefore an important objective in the teaching of biomedical physics to healthcare professionals. The temperature field in a soft tissue model was made visible and measured using thermography. Temperature data from the images were used to investigate the dependence of temperature increase within the model on ultrasound exposure time and distance from the transducer. The experiment will be used within a multi-professional biomedical physics teaching laboratory for enhancing learning regarding the principles of thermography and the thermal effects of ultrasound to medical and healthcare students and also for demonstrating the quantitative use of thermographic imaging to students of biophysics, medical physics and medical technology. Protein folding is an exploding area of research in biophysics and physical chemistry. Here, we describe the integration of several techniques, including absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurements, to probe important topics in protein folding. Cytochrome c is used as a model protein; comparison of conformational stabilities ([delta]G[subscript H[subscript 2]O]) measured via two chemical denaturants, urea and guanidinium hydrochloride, illustrate important concepts in protein folding and intermolecular interactions. In addition, the determination of intraprotein distances based upon the FRET pair Trp-59 and the heme group for unfolded states of cytochrome c highlights the evolution of the protein structure under unfolding conditions. Analysis and discussion of these results provide opportunities to gain in-depth understanding of models for protein folding while enhancing students' skills with optical techniques. Collectively, the combination of optical spectroscopy, rigorous quantitative analysis, and a focus on biophysics illustrates the significance of fundamental research at the growing intersection of chemistry, biology, and physics. A number of institutions have been, or are in the process of, modifying their biochemistry major to include some emphasis on the quantitative physical chemistry of biomolecules. Sometimes this is done as a replacement for part for the entire physical chemistry requirement, while at other institutions this is incorporated as a component into the traditional two-semester biochemistry series. The latter is the model used for biochemistry and molecular biology majors at the University of Richmond, whose second semester of biochemistry is a course entitled Proteins: Structure, Function, and Biophysics. What is described herein is a protein thermodynamics laboratory module, using the protein "Bacillus circulans" xylanase, which reinforces many lecture concepts, including: (i) the denatured (D) state ensemble of a protein can be different, depending on how it was populated; (ii) intermediate states may be detected by some spectroscopic techniques but not by others; (iii) the use and assumptions of the van't Hoff approach to calculate [Delta]H[degree], [Delta]S[degree], and [Delta]G[degree][subscript T] for thermal protein unfolding transitions; and (iv) the use and assumptions of an approach that allows determination of the Gibb's free energy of a protein unfolding transition based on the linear dependence of [Delta]G[degree] on the concentration of denaturant used. Under what conditions can a true "science of mental life" arise from psychological investigations? Can psychology formulate scientific laws of a general nature, comparable in soundness to the laws of physics? I argue that the search for such laws must return to the forefront of psychological and developmental research, an enterprise that requires extensive collaboration between psychologists, neuroscientists, physicists, and mathematicians. Psychological laws may arise from at least 3 sources: the anchoring of thought processes in the biophysics of the brain, the computational constraints on possible mental algorithms, and the internalization of physical or statistical laws into our brains during evolution or development. I consider as an illustration the domain of numerical cognition, where a few solid psychophysical and decision-making laws have been established and related in part to their evolutionary precursors and neural bases. From this platform, I tentatively outline a few promising research directions in the domains of infant development, reading acquisition, executive control of multiple tasks, access to conscious report, and the spontaneous flow of conscious thoughts.

The effects of stress (restraint plus tail shock) on hippocampus-dependent trace eyeblink conditioning and hippocampal excitability were examined in C57BL/6 male mice. The results indicate that the stressor significantly increased the concentration of circulating corticosterone, the amount and rate of learning relative to nonstressed conditioned mice, and the excitability of CA1 hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Behaviorally, there was no effect of the stressor on control mice that received unpaired presentations of the tone and periorbital shock, i.e., neither stressed nor nonstressed control mice showed an increase in conditioned responding that was above baseline levels. Biophysically, the stressor significantly decreased the amplitude of the post-burst afterhyperpolarization (AHP) and decreased spike frequency accommodation relative to cells from nonstressed control mice. The effect was significant for mice that were stressed either 1 h or 24 h earlier. The results suggest that the stressor increases the excitability of hippocampal pyramidal neurons and that the mechanism underlying this increase may contribute to the more rapid acquisition of hippocampally dependent eyeblink conditioning. The recruitment of an additional biomechanical degree of freedom in a unimanual rhythmic task was explored. Subjects were asked to synchronize adduction or abduction of their right index finger with a metronome, the frequency of which was increased systematically. In addition, haptic contact on or off the metronome beat was provided. Results showed that the pattern exhibiting the highest intrinsic stability recruited the vertical plane more than did the less stable one. Moreover, presence and location of haptic contact modulated coordination stability and therefore induced changes in the recruitment of the vertical plane. Thus, a trade-off was shown between coordination stability on the horizontal plane and recruitment of the vertical one. These findings suggest that recruitment of degrees of freedom is governed by general principles of coordination dynamics.

The main distinction between the overlapping fields of molecular biophysics and biochemistry resides in their different approaches to the same problems. Molecular biophysics makes more use of physical techniques and focuses on quantitative data. This difference encounters two difficult pedagogical challenges when teaching molecular biophysics to biochemistry majors; an aversion to math, "Mathematophobia", combined with little appreciation for the importance of models in scientific progress. To overcome these problems, I have used an heuristic approach to student learning. Although inspired by problem-based learning, it has a lesser demand for material resources and can be managed by a single teacher in small classes. This approach is especially suited for elective courses in the final years of a program of study. It consists of teaching/touching the art of discovery by turning laboratories into original research projects and lectures into seminars. (Contains 4 footnotes.)
