Abstract Degradation of palmitoleic acid (C 16:1ω7), the main fatty acid component of sea ice-associated (sympagic) diatoms, was monitored in Arctic sea ice at the beginning of ice melting and in the underlying sinking particles and superficial bottom sediments. In sea ice, degradation of sympagic algae involved biotic oxidation induced by 10 S -DOX-like lipoxygenase of unknown salinity-stressed attached bacteria, while photo- and autoxidation were limited. In the water column, strong hydratase and Z / E isomerase activity were observed. Hydration of unsaturated fatty acids seems to be a detoxification strategy, which is essential for bacterial survival when associated with free fatty acid-rich environments such as ice algae. In contrast, Z / E isomerisation of palmitoleic acid was attributed to the release of Fe2+ ions during radical-induced damage of the active site of the bacterial 10 S -DOX-like lipoxygenase and Z / E isomerases. Due to the poor physiological state of their attached bacteria resulting from salinity stress in brine channels or toxicity of free ice algae fatty acids, sympagic algae appeared to be only very weakly biotically degraded within the water column. In bottom sediments, free radicals resulting from 10 S -DOX-like lipoxygenase activity induced a strong autoxidation of the ice algal material. The presence in bottom sediments of a significant proportion of oxidation products resulting from 10 S -DOX-like lipoxygenase activity attested to the strong contribution of sea ice-derived OM released during the early stages of ice melt prior to deposition in the sediments. However, on the basis of the highest fatty acid photooxidation state observed in these sediments, an additional contribution of highly photooxidized material (ice algal material released at the end of ice melting or open water phytoplankton) seems likely. The degradation of hydroperoxides, resulting from biotic and abiotic degradation of palmitoleic acid, appeared to involve: (i) homolytic cleavage of the peroxyl group affording the corresponding hydroxy- and oxoacids, (ii) reduction to the corresponding hydroxyacids by peroxygenases, (iii) heterolytic proton-catalysed cleavage and (iv) conversion to allylic 1,4-diols by diol synthases and hydroperoxide isomerases. Antibiotics pollution in soil poses increasing threats to human health due to stimulated proliferation and transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) is a promising material for the remediation of antibiotics, but how NZVI affects the diversity, abundance, and horizontal gene transfer potentials of ARGs remains unclear. Herein, the biotic and abiotic effects of NZVI at different concentrations on tetracyclines (TCs) and the associated ARGs were investigated. Results showed NZVI could effectively accelerate the degradation of TCs, which increased from 51.38% (without NZVI) to 57.96%− 71.66% (1–10 g NZVI/kg) in 20 days. Biotic degradation contributed to 66.10%− 76.30% of the total TCs removal. NZVI induced TCs biodegradation was probably due to alleviated toxicity of TCs on cells and increased microbial biomass and enzyme activities. Additionally, TCs-related ARGs were attenuated with decreased horizontal gene transfer potentials of intI1 and ISCR1 , but opposite effects were observed for non TC-related ARGs, especially during excess exposure to NZVI. This study illustrated the possibility of remediating of antibiotic contaminated soil by NZVI and meanwhile reducing the potential risks of ARGs. The aim of this research was to identify the sequence of degradation processes that leads to the selective enrichment of microorganisms involved in the degradation of carbon tetrachloride and chloroform under conditions of natural attenuation and lactic acid biostimulation. To this end, a comparative study using microcosm experiments was conducted to analyze these two scenarios. The authors used groundwater and sediment collected from a field site located at a petrochemical complex to create the microcosms. Chemical, compound-specific isotope and microbial analyses were performed. A significant finding of this work was the abiotic degradation of carbon tetrachloride. Another result was the identification of biotic reductive dechlorination of chloroform by a bacterium of the Clostridiales order. This study showed that biostimulation with lactic acid produced faster degradation rates of carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. Lactic acid acted as an electron donor and promoted a decrease in the concentration of other electron acceptors such as nitrate and sulfate, which competed with chloromethanes. Thus, biostimulation could be an efficient remediation strategy for sites contaminated with chloromethanes, especially when a site's complex pollution history results in chemical background concentrations that are high in compounds that could potentially reduce natural attenuation. Abstract: Landfill leachates are an important pool of organotin compounds (OTCs). Several studies have been performed on the occurrence of OTCs in landfill leachates, but only a few of them report degradation and biomethylation processes by bacteria. In the present study transformation of OTCs in landfill leachate was investigated under simulated landfill conditions over a time span of six months. The degradation and biomethylation processes of OTCs were followed by the use of isotopically enriched tin tracers, namely 117Sn-enriched tributyltin (TBT), 119Sn-enriched dibutyltin (DBT), 117Sn-enriched SnCl2, 117Sn-enriched SnCl4 and a 119Sn-enriched butyltin mix containing TBT, DBT and monobutyltin (MBT). Transformation of OTCs in spiked leachates was followed at m/z of the enriched spikes and at m/z 120, which allowed simultaneous observation of the transformation of OTCs in the leachate itself and of the added spike. In parallel, these processes were also monitored in a non-spiked leachate sample at m/z 120. Quantification of OTCs was performed by gas chromatography – inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP-MS). To discriminate the biotic and abiotic transformations of OTCs and inorganic tin species, sterilization of leachate was also performed and data compared to non-sterilized samples. During the course of the experiment the microbial degradation of TBT was clearly manifested in Sn-enriched spiked leachate samples, while abiotic pathway of degradation was observed for DBT. Biomethylation process was also observed in the leachate spiked with Sn-enriched Sn2+ or Sn4+, in concentrations close to those found for total tin in landfill leachates. Monomethyltin (MMeT) was formed first. Stepwise alkylation resulted in dimethyltin (DMeT) and trimethyltin (TMeT) species formation. Hydrolysis of Sn2+ and Sn4+ species was found to be a limiting factor which controlled the extent of methyltin formation. The results of the present investigation importantly contribute to a better understanding of the processes that OTCs undergo in leachates, and provide useful information to managers of landfills in taking measures necessary to prevent the release of toxic methyltin species to the nearby environment. Abstract: The lipid content of eight samples of aeolian particles collected on the Frioul Islands (north-western Mediterranean Sea) during the year 2010 was investigated. Lipid analyses indicated a significant contribution of terrestrial higher plant debris to some of the samples, while meat cooking residues were also found. Specific degradation products of sterols and monounsaturated fatty acids were employed to assess the importance of biotic and abiotic degradation processes on land and during aeolian transport. Degradation of higher plant lipids on land appears to involve Type II (i.e., singlet oxygen-mediated) photooxidation during senescence and bacterial degradation processes in soils, while during aeolian transport this terrestrial material mainly undergoes autoxidation and/or Type I (i.e., radical-mediated) photooxidation and is relatively well preserved towards bacterial degradation. Abstract: Sterol and alkenone compositions in suspended particle and surface sediment samples collected in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea during the MEDFLUX program were used to evaluate the relative importance of biotic and abiotic degradation processes on marine organic matter. Alkenone concentrations decreased much more rapidly (~500 fold) between 5 and 800 m than Δ5-sterols (~100-fold) or POC (~100-fold). The diverse functional groups attached to the stable tetracyclic carbon skeleton of Δ5-sterols appeared to be useful for estimating the relative effects of biotic vs. abiotic (photooxidation and autoxidation) degradation. Products of abiotic degradation predominated over products of biotic degradation in suspended particles in the NW Mediterranean. For alkenones, the U 37 K′ index increased from 0.43 to 0.55 with increasing water depth, and a good correlation between variations of U 37 K′ and concentrations of specific Δ5-sterol autoxidation products points to selective autoxidation of alkenones in suspended particles. Stereomutated alkenones (with cis double bonds) were detected in the surface sediment, allowing us to estimate that stereomutation resulted in a +0.05 increase in U 37 K′ .
