Abstract

An overview of the current state of electric propulsion technology development efforts within the United States Air Force is presented. Air Force Mission Needs Statements which call for electric propulsion are likewise discussed. Two groups within the Air Force Research Laboratory contribute to the electric propulsion program: Propulsion Directorate and Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). The Propulsion Directorate is conducting electric propulsion efforts in basic research. engineering development as well as an Advanced Technology Development effort that will result in a space flight experiment of a 30 kilowatt arcjet system. Abstract

There is a strong need to improve our fundamental understanding of electrothermal arcjets with the ultimate goal of increasing both efficiency and specific impulse. A research effort using emission spectroscopy, two-color pyrometry and analytical modeling is being developed to better understand and minimize the major energy loss mechanisms in arcjet thrusters, for example; anode heat losses, viscous losses and frozen flow losses. Research in these areas will assist in optimizing the overall design configuration and thermal characteristics of arcjet propulsion devices. Abstract

Mutations in more than 150 genes are responsible for inherited hearing loss, with thousands of different, severe causal alleles that vary among populations. The Israeli Jewish population includes communities of diverse geographic origins, revealing a wide range of deafness-associated variants and enabling clinical characterization of the associated phenotypes. Our goal was to identify the genetic causes of inherited hearing loss in this population, and to determine relationships among genotype, phenotype, and ethnicity. Genomic DNA samples from informative relatives of 88 multiplex families, all of self-identified Jewish ancestry, with either non-syndromic or syndromic hearing loss, were sequenced for known and candidate deafness genes using the HEar-Seq gene panel. The genetic causes of hearing loss were identified for 60% of the families. One gene was encountered for the first time in human hearing loss: ATOH1 (Atonal), a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor responsible for autosomal dominant progressive hearing loss in a five-generation family. Our results show that genomic sequencing with a gene panel dedicated to hearing loss is effective for genetic diagnoses in a diverse population. Comprehensive sequencing enables well-informed genetic counseling and clinical management by medical geneticists, otolaryngologists, audiologists, and speech therapists and can be integrated into newborn screening for deafness., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S . Abstract

The process of head development in insects utilizes a set of widely conserved genes, but this process and its evolution are not well understood. Recent data from Tribolium castaneum have provided a baseline for an understanding of insect head development. However, work on a wider range of insect species, including members of the hemimetabolous orders, is needed in order to draw general conclusions about the evolution of head differentiation and regionalization. We have cloned and studied the expression and function of a number of candidate genes for head development in the hemipteran Oncopeltus fasciatus. These include orthodenticle, empty spiracles, collier, cap 'n' collar, and crocodile. The expression patterns of these genes show a broad conservation relative to Tribolium, as well as differences from Drosophila indicating that Tribolium + Oncopeltus represent a more ancestral pattern. In addition, our data provide a blastodermal fate map for different head regions in later developmental stages and supply us with a "roadmap" for future studies on head development in this species., (© 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
