- Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is more prevalent among people with experience of severe mental illness compared to the general population, due in part to higher levels of injecting drug use. Delivering HCV care through mental health services may reduce barriers to care and improve outcomes. A nurse-led HCV program was established in a co-located mental health and addiction service in Melbourne, Australia. People with a history of injecting drug use, including current use, were referred for HCV testing by nurses, with support provided on-site from a general practitioner and remotely from infectious disease and hepatology specialists. A nurse practitioner, general practitioner or specialists were able to prescribe HCV treatment. One-hundred and thirty people were referred to the nurse-led service, among whom 112 (86%) were engaged in care. Of those 112, 84 (75%) were found to have detectable HCV RNA, 70 (83%) commenced treatment; 28 (40%) prescriptions were nurse initiated, 19 (27%) were general practitioner initiated and 20 (29%) were prescribed from hospital clinics or elsewhere. All people with an SVR result (48/70) achieved HCV cure (intention to treat SVR 69%, per-protocol SVR 100%). Treatment commencement was highest among people prescribed opioid agonist therapy (28/29, 96%) compared to those who were not (18/26, 69%). In conclusion, a nurse-led, HCV service for people with severe mental illness including pathways to specialist support when needed can achieve high treatment uptake and cure. Further implementation work is required to improve treatment uptake, particularly among people not prescribed opioid agonist therapy, and to improve follow-up for SVR testing.

Delineating spatial patterns of precipitation isotopes ("isoscapes") is becoming increasingly important to understand the processes governing the modern water isotope cycle and their application to migration forensics, climate proxy interpretation, and ecohydrology of terrestrial systems. However, the extent to which these patterns can be empirically predicted across Canada and the northern United States has not been fully articulated, in part due to a lack of time series precipitation isotope data for major regions of North America. In this study, we use multiple linear regressions of CNIP, GNIP, and USNIP observations alongside climatological variables, teleconnection indices, and geographic indicators to create empirical models that predict the δ18O of monthly precipitation (δ18Oppt) across Canada and the northern United States. Five regionalization approaches are used to separate the study domain into isotope zones to explore the effect of spatial grouping on model performance. Stepwise regression-derived parameterizations quantified by permutation testing indicate the significance of precipitable water content and latitude as predictor variables. Within the Canadian Arctic and eastern portion of the study domain, models from all regionalizations capture the interannual and intraannual variability of δ18Oppt. The Pacific coast and northwestern portions of the study domain show less agreement between models and poorer model performance, resulting in higher uncertainty in simulations throughout these regions. Long-term annual average δ18Oppt isoscapes are generated, highlighting the uncertainty in the regionalization approach as it compounds over time. Additionally, monthly time series simulations are presented at various locations, and model structure uncertainty and 90% bootstrapped prediction bounds are detailed for these predictions. Key Points: Empirical models are developed to simulate 18O of monthly precipitation Precipitable water content describes the most variance in precipitation 18O Uncertainty in modeling monthly and long-term precipitation 18O is assessed

δ18O and δ2H time-series of monthly composite precipitation (July 1975–June 1982) for three stations located in western Canada were examined to characterize the influence of atmospheric circulation on modern isotope–climate relations in the region. Spatially coherent trends in long-term isotope and temperature anomalies were evident among the three stations, with isotope and temperature anomalies showing the strongest correlations when weighted to reflect precipitation amount. Strong correlations were also found between unweighted isotope anomalies and the Pacific–North American (PNA) index, which is a key descriptor of air-mass circulation patterns across North America. Positive δ anomalies and variable temporal δ–temperature relations having relatively shallow slopes occur during periods of intensified meridional circulation (PNA+), especially during winter. Periods of stronger zonal circulation (PNA−), in contrast, are marked by negative δ anomalies and steeper δ–temperature relations, consistent with increased distillation and deepening of the isotope shadow in the lee of the Canadian Cordillera. Significant positive correlations with pressure-height and precipitable-water anomalies located over western Canada provide additional confirmation that seasonal and interannual variability in the strength of the PNA ridge-and-trough pattern profoundly influences the isotopic evolution of moisture reaching the interior. Analogous circulation-dependent shifts in the precipitation isotope–temperature relation in western Canada also occur over much longer timescales, as inferred from isotope palaeorecords in various natural archives.DOI: 10.1111/j.1600-0889.2009.00423.x

- Abstract
Imagery can improve sport performance, although its efficacy is mediated by the ease with which athletes can generate images. Establishing techniques that improve this imagery ability factor is desirable to enhance the effectiveness of imagery interventions. Twenty-seven club-level female golfers were assigned to imagery, action observation, or physical practice training groups (n = 9). Changes in image generation ease were assessed using the Revised Movement Imagery Questionnaire over an 8-week period. Imagery and action observation training were both effective in improving aspects of imagery ability. Action observation can provide sport psychologists with an effective tool for improving visual imagery ability in athletes.

46. Mate choice in Australian brush-turkeys Alectura lathami : a preliminary report

Female brush-turkeys respond to several factors when choosing with whom they will mate and where they will lay their eggs. The most important factors seem to be mound condition (especially incubation stage and digging effort required), male presence at mounds (though not necessarily male quality), and perhaps competition with other females for access to mounds. Most visits by females to mounds are for the purpose of copulation and mound "assessment" rather than egg laying. Females visit several mounds/males during the breeding season. Once they make a choice, most remain loyal to the chosen mound/male for several weeks, and are rarely seen at other mounds during this time. When switching to new mounds, females always choose more recently built ones even if older mounds with proper incubation conditions are available. Occasionally females lay eggs in the mound of one male while simultaneously seeking further copulations with another. Paternity analyses, quantification of mound characteristics, and experiments that manipulate mounds and males should lead to a better understanding of female mate choice in the future.

Tritium concentrations were measured in a survey of 24 lakes, 15 wetlands, and 133 groundwaters in the oil sands region of northeastern Alberta and compared with both recent precipitation and precipitation sampled during the 1960s tritium peak caused by atmospheric thermonuclear weapons testing. Water samples from lakes included a group of 14 thaw lakes that had higher runoff attributed to melting of permafrost in peat plateaus within their watersheds. While tritium in all lakes was found to be intermediate between recent and 1960s concentrations, the thaw lakes were found to be significantly enriched in tritium compared with other lakes, as were unfrozen wetlands characterized by a thick sequence of low-hydraulic conductivity peat. The results provide further evidence of different water sources to the thaw lakes and may indicate that melting of modern permafrost in part formed since the 1950s is occurring in these systems. Delineating spatial patterns of precipitation isotopes ('isoscapes') is becoming increasingly important to understand the processes governing the modern water isotope cycle and their application to migration forensics, climate proxy interpretation, and ecohydrology of terrestrial systems. However, the extent to which these patterns can be empirically predicted across Canada and the northern United States has not been fully articulated, in part due to a lack of time series precipitation isotope data for major regions of North America. In this study, we use multiple linear regressions of CNIP, GNIP, and USNIP observations alongside climatological variables, teleconnection indices, and geographic indicators to create empirical models that predict the δ
18 O of monthly precipitation (δ18 Oppt ) across Canada and the northern United States. Five regionalization approaches are used to separate the study domain into isotope zones to explore the effect of spatial grouping on model performance. Stepwise regression-derived parameterizations quantified by permutation testing indicate the significance of precipitable water content and latitude as predictor variables. Within the Canadian Arctic and eastern portion of the study domain, models from all regionalizations capture the interannual and intraannual variability of δ18 Oppt . The Pacific coast and northwestern portions of the study domain show less agreement between models and poorer model performance, resulting in higher uncertainty in simulations throughout these regions. Long-term annual average δ18 Oppt isoscapes are generated, highlighting the uncertainty in the regionalization approach as it compounds over time. Additionally, monthly time series simulations are presented at various locations, and model structure uncertainty and 90% bootstrapped prediction bounds are detailed for these predictions.
