Due to severe resource use and waste generation, the building sector causes an immense pressure on the natural environment. One potential mitigation strategy is eco-design, which can be defined as a systematic way of including environmental considerations in the design phase with the aim of reducing adverse environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of a product or building. The building sector lacks implementation of eco-design and knowledge on how to apply it to buildings. Through a systematic literature review it was identified that the most promising way to eco-design buildings is through the application of so-called eco-design strategies. For example, material substitution, where traditionally used construction materials are replaced with less impacting ones. The aim of eco-design strategies is to reduce adverse environmental impacts. However, quantitative evidence supporting their effectiveness is currently lacking. The main objective of this project was to quantify the environmental consequences of applying eco-design strategies in the building sector and prioritize between them across multiple impact categories. The environmental consequences were evaluated based on two assessments. The first assessment was conducted at an urban scale, where a building stock model capable of simulating the future demand for housing and related material flows within the urban building stock was developed. This model was coupled with consequential life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the environmental impacts. A multi-step approach was used to conduct a building-scale assessment that quantified the environmental consequences of applying various eco-design strategies to eight different building components, such as interior walls and floor separations. The approach employed consequential LCA to quantify the environmental impacts and statistical analysis, such as linear regression, to interpret the output. The current enthusiasm for the circular economy (CE) offers a unique opportunity to advance the impact of research on sustainability transitions. Diverse interpretations of CE by scholars, however, produce partly opposing assessments of its potential benefits, which can hinder progress. Here, we synthesize policy-relevant lessons and research directions for a sustainable CE and identify three narratives—optimist, reformist, and skeptical—that underpin the ambiguity in CE assessments. Based on 54 key CE scholars’ insights, we identify three research needs: the articulation and discussion of ontologically distinct CE narratives; bridging of technical, managerial, socio-economic, environmental, and political CE perspectives; and critical assessment of opportunities and limits of CE science–policy interactions. Our findings offer practical guidance for scholars to engage reflexively with the rapid expansion of CE knowledge, identify and pursue high-impact research directions, and communicate more effectively with practitioners and policymakers.
