In recent years, Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) observations have been carried out with bigger telescopes (APOLLO) and at infrared wavelength (OCA, Wettzell). In future, an upgraded station with a high-power continuous-wave laser at Table Mountain Observatory of JPL will enable a new technique for lunar tracking, i.e., differential lunar laser ranging (DLLR). DLLR will decrease the atmospheric errors largely, resulting in a very high accuracy for the differential range at the level of ~30 µm. From the combination of LLR and DLLR data various parameters of the Earth-Moon system can be determined with higher accuracy. By analysing LLR data, Earth Rotation Parameters (ERP) such as the Earth rotation phase ∆UT1 and the terrestrial pole coordinates xp and yp, can be determined along with other parameters of the Earth-Moon system. The accuracies of the estimated ERPs have improved significantly compared to previous results. Investigated in a comprehensive sensitivity analysis, we achieved an accuracy of 9.77 µs for ∆UT1, 0.35 mas for xp, and 0.64 mas for yp from subsets of the LLR time series containing 15 normal points per night after 2015. Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) has been measuring the distance between the Earth and the Moon since 1969, where the measurements are provided by the observatories as Normal Points (NPs). The Institute of Geodesy (IfE) LLR model has (as of April 2021) 28093 NPs. Using the LLR observation equation, the LLR residuals (difference of observed and calculated values of the light travel time) are obtained for each NP. The LLR analysis procedure is an iteration of the calculation of ephemeris of the solar system followed by the calculation of residuals and the estimation of parameters using a Least-Squares Adjustment (LSA). The initial orbit of the Moon (Euler angles and angular velocity of the lunar mantle, Euler angles of the lunar core, and the position and the velocity of the selenocenter), amongst many other parameters, is estimated from the LSA. In our previous standard calculation, the initial orbit of the Moon was estimated for June 28, 1969 and ephemeris was calculated from this time until June 2022. In this study, we estimate the initial orbit of the Moon for Jan 1, 2000 to be able to benefit from the higher accuracy of the NPs over the timespan of LLR. The ephemeris is then calculated in forward and backward directions (until June 2022 and June 1969). When comparing the uncertainty obtained from a LSA of this study with the previous standard calculation, preliminary results show an improvement of over 50% in the initial position and the initial velocity of the Moon, a deterioration of about 20% in the Euler angles of the mantle and the core, and an improvement of over 15% in the angular velocity of the mantle. The changed analysis procedure will allow to compute a more accurate ephemeris for the upcoming years benefitting future lunar science. With more than 50 years of distance measurements for tracking the Moon from Earth by using laser pulses, Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) plays an important role in many research fields, e.g., relativity tests and lunar interior modelling. However, due to the limited LLR accuracy, mainly caused by the Earth’s atmosphere, some Earth-Moon parameters can only be determined with poor quality and certain details of the lunar interior cannot be assessed. A new laser station of JPL will enable a new technique of lunar tracking: Differential Lunar Laser Ranging (DLLR). The DLLR observation is the difference of any two consecutive ranges obtained by fast switching of a station between two or more reflectors. Because of the large reduction of the Earth’s atmospheric error, a big improvement of the observation accuracy of about 30 µm can potentially be obtained. Therefore, DLLR will provide an excellent chance to estimate various parameters with higher accuracies and to achieve a better understanding of the lunar interior. It is also expected to be beneficial for relativity tests, e.g., related to the equivalence principle (EP). For the comparison of DLLR and LLR with respect to the parameter sensitivity, correlation and accuracy, simulated DLLR data has been generated having the same distribution, time span and number of observations as LLR. DLLR and LLR keep the same sensitivity for one group of parameters which include, e.g., the lunar rotation parameters. However, owing to the cancelling effect of DLLR on the station side, DLLR is less sensitive for a second group of parameters, e.g., for the station coordinates. But this can be compensated by its high measurement accuracy. The parameter accuracy of the second group estimated using DLLR remains at the same level as that obtained by LLR, while the parameter accuracy of the first group is significantly enhanced. The DLLR concept increases the correlation of reflectors and stations. Fortunately, some decorrelation can be reached by selecting a larger switching interval from one reflector to the next (e.g., 15 min instead of 1.5 min). Besides the Newtonian parameters, DLLR can also improve the estimation of the relativity parameters. In this presentation, we illustrate the basic principles of DLLR, its typical characteristics and quantify the potential improvement for the determination of various parameters of the Earth-Moon system.Acknowledgement. The observations from Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) are analysed and various parameters of the Earth-Moon system are determined by least-squares adjustment (e.g., station and reflector coordinates, lunar orbit and rotation). It is also possible to investigate EOPs like xP, yP and UT0-UTC from LLR data. In our previous study, the EOPs were determined in a post processing step after the global least-squares adjustment. However, in this way the correlation between EOPs and other parameters of the Earth-Moon system could not be investigated. In our recent analysis, values for xP, yP and UT0-UTC are determined directly in the global adjustment. Correlations with other parameters of the Earth-Moon system are automatically obtained. The LLR results for the EOPs are also compared to results determined from VLBI and GPS. DFG/FOR/584/EU

Entfernungsmessungen zum Mond mit Laserpulsen, englisch als Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) bezeichnet, werden seit 45 Jahren durchgeführt. Die Daten stellen die längste Reihe räumlicher geodätischer Beobachtungen dar. Nachdem es auf Beobachtungsebene gelungen ist, die Erde-Mond-Entfernung bei optimalen Bedingungen mit Millimeter-Genauigkeit zu messen, ist es nun notwendig die Genauigkeit der Auswertung diesem Niveau anzunähern, um so das volle Potential der hochgenauen LLR-Beobachtungen nutzen zu können. Für die LLR-Analyse am Institut für Erdmessung (IfE) steht das Auswerteprogramm Lunar zur Verfügung, das in den letzten 30 Jahren entwickelt wurde. Mit dem Programm können verschiedene Parameter des Erde-Mond-Systems in einem Gauß-Markov-Modell bestimmt werden. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel Anfangswerte für die Translation und Rotation des Mondes, Koordinaten von Beobachtungsstationen und Retroreflektoren sowie die Koeffizienten der Nutationsreihe. Mit speziellen Modifikationen des Programms Lunar ist es außerdem möglich, die Gültigkeit von Einsteins Relativitätstheorie zu untersuchen. Im Rahmen der Arbeit wird das funktionale Modell von Lunar erweitert. Dies umfasst unter anderem die Gezeitenmodelle für die Atmosphäre, die Ozeane und die feste Erde. Ein zentraler Teil der Modellverbesserungen betrifft die Transformation aus dem erdfesten Referenzsystem (ITRS) ins raumfeste System (BCRS). Verschiedene Möglichkeiten zur Berechnung der Transformationsmatrix werden implementiert. Es zeigt sich, dass die Art der Transformation einen großen Einfluss auf die Parameterschätzung hat. Zusätzlich werden im stochastischen Modell der Ausgleichung Varianten der Datengewichtung getestet. Mit dem erweiterten und verbesserten Auswerteprogramm werden Parameter der Erdorientierung und ihre Bestimmbarkeit aus LLR untersucht. Einerseits werden Nutationskoeffizienten für fünf Perioden (18.6 Jahre, 182.6 Tage, 13.6 Tage, 9.3 Jahre und 365.3 Tage) über unterschiedliche Modellierungsansätze bestimmt. Vergleiche zum offiziellen Nutationsmodell MHB2000 zeigen besonders in den langperiodischen Nutationskoeffizienten signifikante Abweichungen von mehreren Millibogensekunden, die diskutiert werden. Andererseits werden Erdrotationsparameter in unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen bezüglich der Datenauswahl (variierende Zeiträume, Stations-Reflektor-Kombinationen) geschätzt und analysiert. Aus den hoch genauen Daten der Station APOLLO kann die Erdrotationsphase ∆UT im Genauigkeitsbereich von 3 – 50 µ s bestimmt werden. Die bei den durchgeführten Analysen erhaltenen Korrelationen zwischen den Erdorientierungsparametern und anderen Parametern des Erde-Mond-Systems geben Hinweise zu wechselseitigen Abhängigkeiten. Die LLR-Stationskoordinaten und -geschwindigkeiten werden auf Basis bestimmter Annahmen hinsichtlich der Datumsfestlegung und gleichzeitig geschätzter weiterer Parameter des Erde-Mond-Systems bestimmt. Vergleiche mit entsprechenden Ergebnissen aus Entfernungsmessungen zu Satelliten (SLR) zeigen nach einer Ähnlichkeitstransformation Differenzen im Bereich einiger Zentimeter. Somit kann die LLR-Lösung grundsätzlich in einer kombinierten Lösung des Internationalen Terrestrischen Referenzrahmens (ITRF) genutzt werden. Zusätzlich werden in dieser Arbeit Tests der Relativitätstheorie von Einstein durchgeführt. Untersucht wird, inwieweit die Modellerweiterungen des Auswerteprogramms Lunar die Schätzung ausgewählter relativistischer Parameter verbessern, z.B. die zeitliche Variation der Gravitationskonstanten. Analysen mit der aktuellen LLR-Auswertesoftware des IfE haben die Gültigkeit der Einstein’schen Theorie weiter gefestigt.
