To determine sex and maturity stages accurately without any physical injury and stress, especially for sensitive and high‐value fish species, employing a noninvasive ultrasound imaging technique could be a desirable approach. The ultrasound imaging method as a powerful eco‐friendly tool was established to determine sex, gonad volume, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and reproductive stages in the Indian shad, hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha). About 30 hilsa (15 males and 15 females) of different maturity stages were collected from the river Ganga round the year using gill nets. The ultrasound sonography (USG) was then employed in hilsa to determine the computed GSI. The fresh gonad volume of hilsa was determined using a water displacement method to ascertain actual GSI values. There was no significant difference between the calculated, real, and actual GSIs (P > 0.05) in both males and females. The validation of the precise maturity stages of ultrasound images of the gonad by the histological architecture indicated that USG images of the hilsa gonad depicted exact stages of maturity in both sexes except for stages I and II in males. The sex of the fish was accurately ascertained using ovarian ultrasound scanning for all the specimens. The calculated USG‐based ovarian volume was positively correlated (R2 = 0.97) with the actual and real ovarian volumes. The noninvasive and reliable ultrasonography technique was found to be an accurate and valid tool to track gender and gonadal development and predict the spawning periodicity in hilsa. Desiccation due to air exposure is a common environmental stress that harms the health of crustaceans. How crustaceans respond to air exposure remains largely unclear. In this research, we explored the physiological responses and gene regulation under air exposure of an invasive species Procambarus clarkii, which is the most commonly cultured freshwater crustacean in China. Toll3 belonging to the Toll‐like receptor family and proPO in the prophenoloxidase‐activating system were two important immune responses to air exposure. In addition, air exposure can also influence ammonia metabolism via regulating the expression of the key genes. Prx6 and proPO showed quick responses and high sensitivity to air exposure, suggesting the potential to be the biomarker for desiccation stress assessment in crayfish. The present study evaluates stocks of Etroplus suratensis concerning length-weight relationships (LWRs), condition factor (K), and truss analysis from different habitats, viz., West Bengal (freshwater hatchery), Gujarat (brackish water grow-out pond), and Odisha (Chilika lagoon) in India. All the stocks were collected using gill nets with various mesh sizes of 20–50 mm and cast nets with mesh size of 15 mm from February 2021 to September 2021. The total length (L), weight (W), and digital pictures were taken for LWRs and principle component analysis (PCA). The total length (L) and total weight (W) were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm and 0.01 gm, respectively, followed by regression analysis. The values of parameters "b" in the LWRs equation were estimated within the range of 2.50–3.82 and intercept "a" values (0.235–0.779) and "K" (1.07–3.37), respectively, for all different habitats and ecosystems with significant correlation values ( R 2 ≥ 0.85). In truss morphometric analysis, principal component 1 (PC1) contributed the highest (93.1%) and principal component 2 (PC2) contributed 4.6% to the size and shape variation amongst the stocks from different habitats and ecosystems. The scatter plot analysis and canonical variate analysis (CVA) have shown that the Gujarat and West Bengal stocks are closely placed and separated from the Chilika-Odisha stock. Similar variations were also observed in the ANOSIM boxplot analysis, where Chilika-Odisha stock scored higher than the other two stocks. Since data available regarding LWRs and truss morphometry studies of E. suratensis from different habitats are limited, the present study will provide a clear insight into the differentiation of E. suratensis stocks from different habitats in India. Abstract: Mystus gulio, the long whiskers catfish, is a popular food fish and potential candidate species for aquaculture in Sundarban area of India and Bangladesh. Recently, catch of this species has declined due to overfishing and various ecological changes. In the present study, mature fish was induced to spawn in captivity through intramuscular injection of human chorionic gonadotropin at the doses of 10 IU/g to female and 5 IU/g to male. Photomicrographs of all developmental stages of live embryo and larvae were documented with the aid of a light microscope. Results demonstrated that morula, blastula, gastrula and neurula and organogenesis ended at 1:30‐, 3:00‐, 5:30‐, 7:30‐ and 17:15‐hour post‐spawning (hps) respectively. Heartbeat and muscular contraction of embryo commenced at 8:30 and 11.15 hps respectively. Hatching of embryo started after an incubation period of 17:30 hour at an ambient temperature of 29 ± 1°C. The newly hatched larvae measured 2.17 ± 0.29 mm in total length with a yolk volume of 0.165 ± 0.03 mm3 started feeding 36 hr after hatching. The present study, on induced breeding and chronological development of M. gulio embryo, will have significant implications on conservation and seed production for aquaculture. A 75-day 2 × 3 factorial experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of two levels of dietary protein (32 and 40%) and two different carbon sources (rice flour-R and molasses-M), and without carbohydrate (control-C) in black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon juveniles (3.37 ± 0.04 g) at 100 nos. m−3 in 100 L fibre reinforced plastic tanks. Biofloc volume and total suspended solid were higher in molasses added groups (32 + M and 40 + M) followed by rice flour (32 + R and 40 + R) and controls (32C and 40C). Molasses and rice flour addition significantly reduced ( P < 0.01) the total ammonia-N compared to controls. The highest Vibrio, Bacillus and Lactobacillus counts were recorded in 40 + M, 32 + M and 32 + R respectively. Among the treatments, significantly higher ( P < 0.01) final body weight was recorded in 40 + R (8.5 ± 0.3 g), 40 + M (7.8 ± 0.3 g) and 32 + R (7.5 ± 0.4 g) compared to control groups, 32C (6.1 ± 0.3 g), 40C (6.4 ± 0.3 g) and molasses added group, 32 + M (5.7 ± 0.4 g). Rice flour supplementation significantly increased ( P < 0.01) the total haemocyte count (×106 cells mL−1) in 32 + R (45.7 ± 3.7) and 40 + R (44.3 ± 3.1) compared to controls, 32C (27.3 ± 3.4) and 40C (25.8 ± 0.9). Similarly, higher superoxide dismutase, catalase, serum protein and glucose were recorded in the rice flour added groups, 40 + R followed by 32 + R. Among the treatments, the highest level of prophenoloxidase ( OD 490 nm, 0.3 ± 0.0) and survival after challenge with Vibrio harveyi (55.6%) was observed in 32 + R. The study elucidates that rice flour addition produces optimum level of biofloc with better growth and immune responses compared to molasses and control.
