Heme has a critical role in the chemical framework of the cell as an essential protein cofactor and signaling molecule that controls diverse processes and molecular interactions. Using a phylogenomics-based approach and complementary structural techniques, we identify a family of dimeric hemoproteins comprising a domain of unknown function DUF2470. The heme iron is axially coordinated by two zinc-bound histidine residues, forming a distinct two-fold symmetric zinc-histidine-iron-histidine-zinc site. Together with structure-guided in vitro and in vivo experiments, we further demonstrate the existence of a functional link between heme binding by Dri1 (Domain related to iron 1, formerly ssr1698) and post-translational regulation of succinate dehydrogenase in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis, suggesting an iron-dependent regulatory link between photosynthesis and respiration. Given the ubiquity of proteins containing homologous domains and connections to heme metabolism across eukaryotes and prokaryotes, we propose that DRI (Domain Related to Iron; formerly DUF2470) functions at the molecular level as a heme-dependent regulatory domain.

Emission of greenhouse gases has become a matter of major concern; nations are struggling to lower the greenhouse gas emissions because of its adverse effects on life. There is dire need to lower the source size and enlarge the sinks of green house gases. Reducing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere by enhancing the rates of removal of the atmospheric CO2 through carbon sequestration is considered as one of the best climate change mitigation strategy. Carbon sequestration is the issue of international interest due to its potential impact on agriculture and climate change. Oceans, soils, geological formations, mangroves, bogs, agriculture and agro forestry serves carbon sequesters. Although intensive agriculture is a source of carbon emission, it can be converted to sink with proper management. Policies to reduce climate change using natural ecosystems to sequester and store carbon should be accompanied by technological solutions to further reduce the impacts of climate change. Accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere has exposed us to the potential warming and its adverse effects on agriculture. The present study deals with the impact of climate change on winter wheat and maize using the Infocrop model. Simulation studies were performed for different timeperiods using HADCM3 factors at four centres located in three different agroecological zones, with prevalent management practices. The results showed that under changed climate, wheat yield decreased whereas the yield of winter maize increased due to warmer winters and enhanced CO2 compared to baseline. Duration of both the crops has decreased owing to the higher temperatures during the growing period. The increase in yield of winter maize points to the suitability of the region for its cultivation in future. Further, increase in maize cultivation in locations with poor wheat yield could well be considered as an adaptation option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Role of sports vision and eye hand coordination training in performance of table tennis players. Brazilian Journal of Biomotricity, v. 5, n. 2, p. 106-116, 2011. Successful performance in interceptive tasks depends upon the acquisition of visual information about the approaching object. The present study therefore evaluated the effects of sports vision and eye hand coordination training on sensory and motor performance of table tennis players. 45 University level table tennis players were randomly divided into 3 equal groups of n=15. The experimental group underwent 8 weeks of sports vision and eye hand co-ordination training. The placebo group read articles pertaining to sports performance and watched televised table tennis matches, while the control group followed only routine practice sessions for 8 weeks. Measures of visual function and motor performance were obtained from all participants before and immediately after 8 weeks of training. Statistically significant pre to post training differences were evident by better improvement in visual variables and motor performance for the experimental group as compared to placebo and control. The present study therefore concluded that visual training program improves the basic visual skills, which in turn are transferable into sports specific performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
