The European Red List of Habitats provides an overview of the risk of collapse (degree of endangerment) of marine, terrestrial and freshwater habitats in the European Union (EU28) and adjacent regions (EU28+), based on a consistent set of categories and criteria, and detailed data and expert knowledge from involved countries. A total of 257 benthic marine habitat types were assessed. In total, 19% (EU28) and 18% (EU28+) of the evaluated habitats were assessed as threatened in categories Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable. An additional 12% were Near Threatened in the EU28 and 11% in the EU28+. These figures are approximately doubled if Data Deficient habitats are excluded. The percentage of threatened habitat types differs across the regional seas. The highest proportion of threatened habitats in the EU28 was found in the Mediterranean Sea (32%), followed by the North-East Atlantic (23%), the Black Sea (13%) and then the Baltic Sea (8%). There was a similar pattern in the EU28+. The most frequently cited pressures and threats were similar across the four regional seas: pollution (eutrophication), biological resource use other than agriculture or forestry (mainly fishing but also aquaculture), natural system modifications (e.g. dredging and sea defence works), urbanisation and climate change. Even for habitats where the assessment outcome was Data Deficient, the Red List assessment process has resulted in the compilation of a substantial body of useful information to support the conservation of marine habitats.

The Protocol concerning specially protected areas and biological diversity in the Mediterranean and the Action Plan for the protection of the marine environment and the sustainable development of Mediterranean coastal areas (MAP Phase II), adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in 1995, contain arrangements for preparing inventories at national and regional level. In this context, at their Tenth Ordinary Meeting (Tunis, 18-21 November 1997), the Contracting Parties to the Convention for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea against pollution adopted common criteria to establish national inventories of natural sites of conservation interest. During that Meeting, the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA) was invited to work on elaborating these tools, including a Standard Data Form (SDF) to compile information concerning the sites included in the national inventories of sites of conservation interest. This form is intended to help in decision-making on the management and, if need be, protection of the site described, and to provide a tool for long-term monitoring. At the Fourth Meeting of National Focal Points for Specially Protected Areas (Tunis, 12-14 April 1999), RAC/SPA elaborated a reference list of types of habitat and a reference list of species for selecting the sites to be included in the national inventories, and a draft Standard Data Form whose general framework was adopted at the Eleventh Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties (Malta, 27-30 October 1999). The draft Standard Data Form for the national inventories of natural sites of conservation interest was finalized in March 2000 in Rome at a Meeting of Experts. However, this tool should be regularly incremented to make it is efficient as possible. From the technical point of view, the SDF is an adaptation of tools developed in the context of the European Union’s and European Council’s NATURA 2000 and EMERAUDE network of sites to the specific features of the Mediterranean. This specificity ensures compatibility, as far as is possible, and thus facilitates the sharing of data and information, with database systems established as part of these initiatives. In accordance with the overall aims of the inventories, the SDF was designed with a double objective: - to give help in decision-making concerning the management and, if need be, protection of the site described - to provide a tool for the long-term monitoring of the site. From this angle, the Tunis Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas initiated the production of this handbook for interpreting the marine habitats that appear on the list of habitats that is appended to the Standard Data Form. The aim was to provide countries with a tool to help them identify and assess these marine habitats. This handbook must satisfy a triple requirement: -- scientific rigour -- readability for non-specialists -- compatibility with existing classification systems (EUR 15 European Union Habitat Directive, CORINE). To this end, the document has been subdivided into two levels: - detailed ‘habitats/biocenoses’ sheets to allow a general description - more specific ‘facies/associations’ sheets. Indeed, it appears to be difficult to fully describe a facies or an association without having first set them within their biocenosis. Similarly, this method of compilation avoids repetition where several facies belong to the same biocenosis. The Collective Article 'New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records' of the Mediterranean Marine Science journal offers the means to publish biodiversity records in the Mediterranean Sea. The current article is divided in two parts, for records of native and alien species respectively. The new records of native fish species include: the slender sunfish Ranzania laevis and the scalloped ribbonfish Zu cristatus in Calabria; the Azores rockling Gaidropsarus granti in Calabria and Sicily; the agujon needlefish Tylosurus acus imperialis in the Northern Aegean; and the amphibious behaviour of Gouania willdenowi in Southern Turkey. As regards molluscs, the interesting findings include Ischnochiton usticensis in Calabria and Thordisa filix in the bay of Piran (Slovenia). The stomatopod Parasquilla ferussaci was collected from Lesvos island (Greece); the isopod Anilocra frontalis was observed parasitizing the alien Pteragogus trispilus in the Rhodes area. The asteroid Tethyaster subinermis and the butterfly ray Gymnura altavela were reported from several localities in the Greek Ionian and Aegean Seas. The new records of alien species include: the antenna codlet Bregmaceros atlanticus in Saronikos Gulf; three new fish records and two decapods from Egypt; the establishment of the two spot cardinal fish Cheilodipterus novemstriatus and the first record of the marble shrimp Saron marmoratus in semi-dark caves along the Lebanese coastline; the finding of Lagocephalus sceleratus, Sargocentron rubrum, Fistularia commersonii and Stephanolepis diaspros around Lipsi island (Aegean Sea, Greece); the decapod Penaeus hathor in Aegean waters; the decapod Penaeus aztecus and the nudibranch Melibe viridis in the Dodecanese islands; the finding of Pinctada imbricata radiata in the Mar Grande of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Italy) and the Maliakos Gulf (Greece).

According to reports, the following 16 species have extended their distribution to other Mediterranean areas or have made a new appearance in other regions. The first category includes the following organisms: The rare and common Indo-Pacific seaweed Codium arabicum (Lebanese coasts), the acari Thalassarachna affinis (Marmara Sea), and the non-indigenous nudibranch Flabellina rubrolineata, which has been found in several areas of the Aegean Sea. In addition, the rare sea slug Thecacera pennigera (Mar Piccolo of Taranto), the fangtooth moray Enchelycore anatina (National Marine Park of Zakynthos, Ionian Sea), the carangid Seriola fasciata (Gulf of Antalya), Lagocephalus sceleratus (SE Ionian Sea), the reticulated leatherjacket Stephanolepis diaspros (Slovenia, N. Adriatic Sea), the marbled stingray, Dasyatis marmorata (NE Levantine), the starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias (Iskenderun Bay, NE Mediterranean), the cephalopod Ommastrephes bartramii (Ionian Sea) have also been reported. The Atlantic crab Dyspanopeus sayi has expanded to many Italian areas and the blue crab Callinectes sapidus to a lake in N. Greece and in the S. Adriatic Sea. Finally, Farfantepenaeus aztecus has been found in the Ionian Sea, thus showing its wide expansion in the Mediterranean. The larval stages of Faccionella oxyrhyncha have been found, after many years, in the Aegean Sea and the first report of an existence on intersexual acari Litarachna duboscqi in Split (Adriatic Sea) was reported.

Soluble antigen (S-Ag) is a member of the arrestin family of protein with which it shares a high level of homology. It is an immunologically privileged retinal antigen that can elicit experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) and is thought to be a target for ocular inflammatory diseases. This study was conducted to identify in humans, the immunogenic determinants of human S-Ag and to establish whether a specific response profile occurs in particular ocular inflammatory conditions. Peripheral blood lymphocyte responses were measured against a panel of 40 overlapping synthetic peptides of human S-Ag in patients with chronic uveitis and compared with control subjects. Patients with Behçet disease, sarcoidosis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada, and sympathetic ophthalmia were tested. A limited number of immunodominant determinants were identified for Behçet disease and sarcoidosis. These were all located at sites of limited homology with other known arrestins. In addition, several individual patients had prominent proliferative responses to multiple determinants well above that of control subjects. This determinant spread was observed in all disease entities except sympathetic ophthalmia, which did not show any immunoreactivity to S-Ag. Significant response shifts were also noted over time in two patients. The results indicate that there are specific immunodominant determinants to human S-Ag in patients with certain forms of uveitis.
