Abstract

In Part I of this paper we have presented a simple model capable of describing the localized failure of a massive structure. In this part, we discuss the identification of the model parameters from two kinds of experiments: a uniaxial tensile test and a three-point bending test. The former is used only for illustration of material parameter response dependence, and we focus mostly upon the latter, discussing the inverse optimization problem for which the specimen is subjected to a heterogeneous stress field., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

In the present work the degradation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by concrete paving stones containing TiO2 to be applied in road construction is studied. A kinetic model is proposed to describe the photocatalytic reaction of nitric oxide (NO) in a standard flow laminar photoreactor irradiated with UV lamps. In addition the influence of several parameters that can affect the performance of these stones under outdoor conditions are investigated, such as irradiance, relative humidity and wind speed. The kinetic parameters present in the NO reaction rate are estimated employing experimental data obtained in the photoreactor. The obtained model predictions employing the determined kinetic constants are in good agreement with the experimental results of NO concentration at the reactor outlet.

18. Creasing behavior of corrugated paper board

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on creasing behavior of corrugated paper boards. Experiments have been carried out on corrugated paper board and its constituent papers. Finite element simulations have been carried out on a plane-strain model, incorporating Hill’s plasticity criterion. The finite element simulations are found to be in good agreement with experimental observations up to initial buckling. The study presented here is intended to help in determining the optimum creasing depth to prevent cracking of paper boards during creasing and folding operations while manufacturing packaging boxes.

Abstract

Continuum approaches are reviewed which can properly model localised deformations that act as a precursor to final fracture in quasi-brittle materials. Next, one such higher-order damaging continuum model is combined with a stochastic approach to describe the heterogeneity in quasi-brittle materials.
