Abstract

The article focuses on an investigation by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources concerning an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis. 30. The oral‐facial geneticist: his training and role in dentistry

Abstract

There is a great need today for clinical geneticists who can diagnose hereditary malformation complexes and counsel afflicted patients and their families. The vast majority of these heritable syndromes have significant expression in the oral‐craniofacial complex. This paper describes the minimal qualifications and training needed by postgraduate dentists to function as oral‐facial geneticists. The oral‐facial geneticist is defined as a human geneticist who has special interest and training in diseases of the oral‐facial complex. In addition to patient care and consultation, persons with such training may make important contributions to teaching and research in cranio‐facial growth and development.

Abstract

The genetic basis of cleft lip with or without cleft palate [CL(P)] remains unresolved. The controversy on the role of a major gene is confounded with possible population differences. This study examines the issue of population differences by comparing two contrasting populations: Caucasians and Japanese. Japanese are known to have higher population incidence of CL(P) and yet lower recurrence risks among relatives. The study subjects consist of 2,998 nuclear families of the Danish population and 627 families of the Japanese population. The uniformly coded data were subjected to complex segregation analysis based on the mixed model. The analysis has revealed that the Danish data can be best explained by a combination of major gene action and multifactorial inheritance. The best-fitting model is characterized by recessive gene with displacement effect (t) of 2.7 in the standardized unit and gene frequency of .035. The heritability is estimated as .97. The transmission probability of Aa----a for the major gene is consistent with 1/2. On the contrary, the Japanese data can be best accounted for only by multifactorial inheritance with the heritability estimate of .77. No major heterogeneity could be detected between subsets of the data within the populations as grouped by types of ascertainment or mating. It is thus concluded that the observed inconsistency between the two populations is explained by a significant role of major gene in the Caucasian population, but not in the Japanese population.

Abstract

Two light-weight models of missiles are suspended by fine threads. Alongside, a light-weight sphere is suspended. A high-speed camera is focused on the models through a window and illumination is by a short-duration, high- intensity light source. When the shock tunnel is fired, the light source is actuated, the fine threads are snapped, and the models are photographed for 2-1/ 4 milliseconds as they move freely in the shock tunnel flow. From highspeed film, data of the horizontal, vertical, and angular motions of the models and the sphere as functions of time are obtained.

Abstract

Isentropic data for real hydrogen are calculated in a range of pressures up to 30,000 atmospheres and temperatures up to 3500 deg K. The effects of ionization, excitation, and dissociation are considered negligible because of the relatively low temperatures and high densities involved. The effects of the intermolecular force are accounted for by fitting a virial coefficient equation to low temperature high density experimental data. These calculated data in turn are fitted to an empirical entropic equation of state. This particular equation of state is convenient for describing many thermodynamic processes.

Abstract

The constant base pressure process in a hypervelocity launcher is the subject of investigation. The barrel entrance and reservoir pressures required to achieve a constant pressure at the projectile base are calculated. These pressures are calculated for both an ideal-gas propellant and a real hydrogen propellant. Comparison is made between the chambered case when sonic flow speed is required at the barrel entrance to the unchambered case when supersonic flow occurs. (Author)
