Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht das Dreiecksverhältnis zwischen ökologischer Nachhaltigkeit, wirtschaftlichem Wachstum und liberaler Demokratie und stellt fest, dass dieses sich in den westlichen Konsumgesellschaften im Angesicht der zunehmenden lebensweltlichen Manifestation der „Grenzen des Wachstums“ grundlegend neu konfiguriert. Dabei zeichnen sich tatsächlich die Konturen einer „demokratischen Postwachstumsgesellschaft“ ab – allerdings unter gänzlich anderen Vorzeichen, als es der überwiegende Teil der Transformationsforschung ersehnt. In der Absicht, einen Beitrag zur Rückkopplung der normativen und sich als transformativverstehenden Teile der Nachhaltigkeitsforschung an die sozialwissenschaftliche Analyse moderner Gesellschaften zu leisten, zeigt der Beitrag zunächst, wie im Bereich umweltpolitischer und demokratiebezogener Diskurse zentrale Narrative, die über Jahrzehnte die Debatte bestimmt haben, heute ihre Glaubwürdigkeit verlieren und sich damit das Feld für eine Neujustierung der Dreiecksbeziehung eröffnet. Anschließend wird aus gesellschaftstheoretischer Perspektive ausgeleuchtet, wie die Demokratie im Zeichen moderner Subjektivitätsverständnisse und bestenfalls noch moderater Wachstumsraten zunehmend zu einem Mittel der „nachhaltigen“ Verteidigung nicht-nachhaltiger Lebensstile wird. Entschiedener denn je, so zeigt sich, erheben moderne Konsumgesellschaften die „Politik der Nicht-Nachhaltigkeit“ zu ihrem Prinzip. The article examines the triangular relation between ecological sustainability, economic growth and liberal democracy and asserts that this relation is dramatically altered in the face of the increasingly imminent manifestation of the “limits to growth.” In the course of this process, the contours of a “democratic post-growth regime” are beginning to show – though in a very different way than was hoped for by the majority of transformation researchers. Intent on making a contribution to re-relating those normative factions of sustainability research which share a transformative self-understanding to the scientific analysis of modern societies, the paper shows how central eco-political and democracy-related narratives that have dominated the debate for decades have lost credibility, thus opening up the space for a readjustment of the named triangular relation. Applying a social theory perspective, it is subsequently shown how, in the face of modern conceptions of subjectivity and, at best, moderate growth rates, democracy is increasingly turning into an instrument for the unflinching sustainment of unsustainable lifestyles. As it turns out, modern consumer societies persist in their “politics of non-sustainability” more uncompromisingly than ever before. Le présent article étudie la relation triangulaire entre soutenabilité écologique, croissance économique et démocratie libérale et dresse le constat d’une reconfiguration en profondeur de cette relation dans les sociétés de consommation occidentales face aux manifestations croissantes des « limites de la croissance » dans la vie des individus. Ainsi apparaissent effectivement les contours d’une « société démocratique post-croissance », mais sous un tout autre jour que celui que la majeure partie de la recherche sur la transformation appelle de ses vœux. Cet article, qui entend contribuer à reconnecter les fractions de la recherche sur la soutenabilité d’inspiration normative et transformatrice à l’analyse sociologique des sociétés modernes, montre tout d’abord comment, dans les discours en matière de politique de l’environnement et de démocratie, les narratifs centraux qui ont dominé le débat pendant des décennies perdent aujourd’hui leur crédibilité ouvrant ainsi le champ pour un réajustement de cette relation triangulaire. Il est ensuite mis en évidence à la lumière de la théorie de la société comment la démocratie devient de plus en plus, sous l’effet conjugué des conceptions modernes de la subjectivité et de taux de croissance au mieux modestes, un moyen de défense « durable » de modes de vie non soutenables. Avec plus de détermination que jamais, semble-t-il, les sociétés de consommation modernes élèvent la « politique de non-soutenabilité » au rang de principe.
