In two preceding articles, we studied the problem of the existence and uniqueness of a solution to some general BSDE on manifolds. In these two articles, we assumed some Lipschitz conditions on the drift $f(b,x,z)$. The purpose of this article is to extend the existence and uniqueness results under weaker assumptions, in particular a monotonicity condition in the variable $x$. This extends well-known results for Euclidean BSDE.

8. InP DHBT Linear Modulator Driver With a 3-Vppd PAM-4 Output Swing at 90 GBaud: From Enhanced Transistor Modeling to Integrated Circuit Design

Abstract

In this article, we report on the modeling, design, and characterization of indium phosphide (InP) double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) devices and integrated circuits (ICs) for next-generation optical communications. Critical aspects of transistors’ modeling and their influence on the IC design are detailed, as well as the design and characterization of a lumped linear modulator driver featuring a 3-Vppd four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4) output swing at 90 GBaud (GBd). In particular, we propose an electromagnetic (EM) simulation-based parasitic extraction method of the DHBT access structures, to refine the DHBT and IC performance prediction accuracy. It is shown to provide a better estimation of a canonical cascode gain and $\mu $ stability factor at millimeter-wave frequencies, as well as a better estimation of the driver IC gain in the 50–110 GHz frequency range. Furthermore, a high-frequency gain boosting (self-peaking) topology, based upon an emitter-degenerated paralleled-transistor cascode configuration, is analyzed using a simplified transistor model and leveraged to enhance the linear driver output-stage gain–bandwidth product with controlled amount of peaking gain. This self-peaking technique is shown to be inherent to cascode structures and can therefore be used with other technologies, with no added design complexity. The driver IC was implemented in a 0.5- $\mu \text{m}$ InP-DHBT technology and features a bandwidth well in excess of 110 GHz, with 13 dB of peaking gain at 95 GHz. Besides, it achieves a 9.1-dBm single-ended output power at 1 dB of gain compression and a 2.7% root-mean-square total harmonic distortion (rms-THD) at a 3-Vppd output swing. The driver power consumption is 0.67 W, which is among the lowest in the state of the art and shows a 1.5-GBd driver figure of merit (FoM). To the best of our knowledge, this driver achieves the highest $\geq 64$ GBd PAM-4 performances reported to date, without digital signal processing (DSP) or postprocessing.

Abstract

Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is a promising way to mitigate the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Based on a simple ratio between CO2 anthropogenic emissions and SOC stocks worldwide, it has been suggested that a 0.4% (4 per 1000) yearly increase in SOC stocks could compensate for current anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Here, we used a reverse RothC modelling approach to estimate the amount of C inputs to soils required to sustain current SOC stocks and to increase them by 4‰ per year over a period of 30 years. We assessed the feasibility of this aspirational target first by comparing the required C input with net primary productivity (NPP) flowing to the soil, and second by considering the SOC saturation concept. Calculations were performed for mainland France, at a 1 km grid cell resolution. Results showed that a 30%–40% increase in C inputs to soil would be needed to obtain a 4‰ increase per year over a 30‐year period. 88.4% of cropland areas were considered unsaturated in terms of mineral‐associated SOC, but characterized by a below target C balance, that is, less NPP available than required to reach the 4‰ aspirational target. Conversely, 90.4% of unimproved grasslands were characterized by an above target C balance, that is, enough NPP to reach the 4‰ objective, but 59.1% were also saturated. The situation of improved grasslands and forests was more evenly distributed among the four categories (saturated vs. unsaturated and above vs below target C balance). Future data from soil monitoring networks should enable to validate these results. Overall, our results suggest that, for mainland France, priorities should be (1) to increase NPP returns in cropland soils that are unsaturated and have a below target carbon balance and (2) to preserve SOC stocks in other land uses., The 4 per 1000 aspirational target suggests that a 0.4% yearly increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks could compensate for current anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Using a model of SOC dynamics, estimates of available net primary productivity (NPP), and applying the SOC saturation concept, we assessed its feasibility in the case of mainland France. Our results indicate that the 4 per 1000 target is reachable only for limited areas. Priorities should be to increase NPP returns in cropland soils that are unsaturated and have a below target carbon balance, but also to preserve SOC stocks in other land uses.

Abstract

Optical frequency combs are at the center of numerous applications such as LIDAR and RADAR systems, metrology, telecommunication, and spectroscopy. Among the different ways of frequency comb generation, integrated mode-locked lasers offer lower cost, smaller footprint, and easier system integration than their bulk counterparts. In this work, we demonstrate a III-V/ $\text{S}_{\mathrm {i3}}\text{N}_{4}$ hybrid integrated mode-locked laser developed for RADAR applications to fulfill the role of a frequency bank in the RF domain. Thanks to the low-loss in silicon nitride waveguides, we were able to design a cm-long cavity that enables low noise operation with a very low repetition rate of 364 MHz, which provides high precision when generating RF frequencies. In this letter, we demonstrate passive and harmonic mode locking, with an improved electrical modulation efficiency in the active chip.

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate up to 260-GBaud single-wavelength coherent transmission by employing an optical transmitter based on two wide-bandwidth devices: a novel 260-GS/s arbitrary waveform generator with a 10-dB bandwidth of 90-GHz and a thin-film Lithium Niobate I/Q modulator with a 3-dB bandwidth of 110-GHz. We first assess the performance of our high symbol rate transmitter for generating spectrally efficient Nyquist multilevel modulation format signals at symbol rates up to 210-GBaud with >1.4-Tbps achievable information rates and by using linear digital signal processing only. We achieve up to 1.84-Tbps at 185-GBaud using PCS-64QAM, highlighting the linear behavior of our transmitter for high symbol rate Nyquist signaling. We then switch to dual-polarization QPSK coherent transmission and further increase the symbol rate up to 260-GBaud. Without using nonlinear digital-signal-processing nor advanced inter-symbol-interference mitigation techniques, we successfully transmit 260-GBaud QPSK at 800-Gbps net rate over 100-km of standard single mode fiber.

Abstract

We demonstrate a clear eye-diagram at 36 Gb/s of a BiCMOS driver directly wire-bonded to an InP electro-absorption modulator (EAM) both fabricated through foundry platforms. The driver is fabricated in a 0.25 μm SiGe:C BiCMOS technology and delivers a maximum of 2 Vp-p amplitude when single-ended. The driver is DC-coupled to the modulator, simplifying the electronic-photonic assembly. The EAM operates in the L-band at 1590 nm, with a DC bias set at –1.6 V for on-off keying non-return to zero modulation. We measure the operation from 10 to 40 Gb/s, recording the dynamic extinction ratio from 5 to 3 dB, respectively. The use of foundry platforms does not require any fabrication process change and offers a wide spectrum of high-performance photonic-electronic integrated circuits.

Abstract

We report high speed electro-absorption modulators (EAMs), designed, fabricated and characterized within an open access generic foundry process. The EAM as a new building block (BB) is optimized in the existing platform, in which other BBs are established. By optimizing the EAM design layout, we show a static extinction ratio (static ER) of 18 dB, a low DC bias voltage below 1 V at increased temperature, as well as operation in a semi-cooled environment, tested in the range of 20−60∘C . Furthermore, we improve the intrinsic S-parameter response with a co-design circuit. The intrinsic 3-dB bandwidth of a 100 μm-long EAM is 17 GHz. When measured with the EAM submount design, it is increased to 24 GHz. Simultaneously, the return loss bandwidth is improved by a factor of 2.5 staying below -10 dB up to 20 GHz. Through the realization of the EAM submount design we achieve a three time speed increase of the existing platform, from previously offered 9 GHz (using an electro-optical modulator) to 24 GHz shown in this work.

Abstract

International audience; The use of precise large signal models for optoelectronic devices, such as laser diode, electro-absorption modulator, optical fiber and photodiode, is useful to simulate and to predict the performances of an optical fiber link. Moreover, to characterize its dynamic range and this last influence on a high data rate digital signal, it is necessary to develop not only non- linear models, but also noisy models taking into account both electrical and optical operating of the devices. This paper presents the simulation results of an optical fiber link on which the optical signal is externally modulated by an UWB OFDM signal. Simulations are performed using co-simulation on ADS system simulator Ptolemy. The envelope simulator is used at the circuit level thanks to the developed large signal electrical models of the E/O and O/E devices. These simulations highlight the greater influence of the RIN of the laser diode, compared to the other additive noise sources on the optical link. In some cases, this influence could affect significantly the RoF system performances, particularly in case of a low-level input power UWB signal and of UWB multi-channels use.
