Abstract

Active sensing is the process of moving sensors to extract task-specific information. Whisker touch is often referred to as an active sensory system since whiskers are moved with purposeful control. Even though whisker movements are found in many species, it is unknown if any animal can make task-specific movements with their whiskers. California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) make large, purposeful whisker movements and are capable of performing many whisker-related discrimination tasks. Therefore, California sea lions are an ideal species to explore the active nature of whisker touch sensing. Here, we show that California sea lions can make task-specific whisker movements. California sea lions move their whiskers with large amplitudes around object edges to judge size, make smaller, lateral stroking movements to judge texture and make very small whisker movements during a visual task. These findings, combined with the ease of training mammals and measuring whisker movements, makes whiskers an ideal system for studying mammalian perception, cognition and motor control.

Abstract

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacterial infection that causes meningitis in infants, especially in those below one year old. It is sometimes difficult to obtain good immune responses and protection in infants when using standard vaccines. Therefore, a new vaccine against Hib was developed in which a molecule from the bacteria was bound to tetanus toxin (Hib-TT). The safety and effectiveness of Hib-TT was evaluated in 77 healthy infants and in 10 infants receiving only diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (DTP) vaccinations. Redness at the injection site, fever, or irritability were observed in under 15 percent of children. Protective levels of antibodies were found in 76 percent of children after the first injection, and this number increased after the second injection to 97 percent, while none of the control infants developed protective levels of anti-Hib antibodies. Among 66 children returning for follow-up at 18 months, 91 percent were still protected; the booster shot increased the number of children protected to 100 percent. Several types of antibody subclasses responded to the Hib-TT vaccinations, and the changes in levels of each are described. Antibodies against TT increased after the first, second, and fourth injections. The study suggests that vaccination with Hib-TT provides safe and effective protection against Hib infection, and does not interfere with immune protection against tetanus. The London Stock Exchange has launched SETS, the exchange's electronic trading service, also called the Electronic Order Book. The new system will only initially be applied to the 100 largest companies in the FTSE 100 with a minimum order of 500 stocks priced at over 5 pounds sterling each, or 1,000 stocks if they are priced at under 5 pounds. The system will then be extended to the 250 largest stocks. Private investors are likely to benefit from the new system.

Abstract

The article presents suggestions on how a business might respond to an accusation regarding copyright infringement. The suggestions include avoiding court action, analyzing the offending image, and assessing the validity of the claim. Furthermore, the author suggests that the accused must obtain a copy of both the company's owned image and infringed image, explain compliance on the removal of the image with no admission of liability, and prove what damages were incurred. Moreover, the author states that the exercise of skill in the preparation of a Web site and reasonable care by a web designer should be emphasized within the contractual agreement.

17. Two-site immunoenzymometric assays for serum IgG subclass infant/maternal ratios at full-term

Abstract

Improvements were made in the range, precision, convenience, automation, and reliability of our previously published two-site immunoenzymometric assays using mouse monoclonal antibodies specific for human IgG and its subclasses. The serum concentration ratios for these immunoglobulin isotypes were measured in neonatal/maternal paired sera from 119 normal full-term deliveries. These ratios are significantly different than 1.0 (P= 0.001) for total IgG, IgG1, and IgG2 (show non-equality of paired neonatal/maternal sera concentrations) but are not significantly different than 1.0 for IgG3 and IgG4. On average, IgG1 is elevated 61%, and IgG2 is depressed 11% in the full-term neonate with respect to its own mother. In some pregnancies, active transport of IgG1 may be selectively enhanced by low material IgG1 concentration and selectively inhibited by high levels.

Abstract

A document from an extensive collection spanning four generations of the Woodward family that operated merchant pig iron companies in West Virginia and Alabama. The collection begins with Stimpson Harvey Woodward (S. H. Woodward), a native of Massachusetts, who moved from Pittsburgh to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1852. He had interests in an iron company as early as 1852 in West Virginia and began Alabama operations in 1869. The family business continued in Alabama until the death of S. H. Woodward's great-grandson in 1965.

Abstract

Salmonella Typhi is a human host-restricted pathogen that is responsible for typhoid fever in approximately 10.9 million people annually1. The typhoid toxin is postulated to have a central role in disease pathogenesis, the establishment of chronic infection and human host restriction2-6. However, its precise role in typhoid disease in humans is not fully defined. We studied the role of typhoid toxin in acute infection using a randomized, double-blind S. Typhi human challenge model7. Forty healthy volunteers were randomized (1:1) to oral challenge with 104 colony-forming units of wild-type or an isogenic typhoid toxin deletion mutant (TN) of S. Typhi. We observed no significant difference in the rate of typhoid infection (fever ≥38 °C for ≥12 h and/or S. Typhi bacteremia) between participants challenged with wild-type or TN S. Typhi (15 out of 21 (71%) versus 15 out of 19 (79%); P = 0.58). The duration of bacteremia was significantly longer in participants challenged with the TN strain compared with wild-type (47.6 hours (28.9-97.0) versus 30.3(3.6-49.4); P ≤ 0.001). The clinical syndrome was otherwise indistinguishable between wild-type and TN groups. These data suggest that the typhoid toxin is not required for infection and the development of early typhoid fever symptoms within the context of a human challenge model. Further clinical data are required to assess the role of typhoid toxin in severe disease or the establishment of bacterial carriage.
