Abstract

ABSTRACTIn statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data‐generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence‐generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty—nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer‐review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

6. Micro-computed tomography scanning approaches to quantify, parameterize and visualize bioturbation activity in clogged streambeds: A proof of concept

Abstract

Fine particle clogging and faunal bioturbation are two key processes co‐occurring in the hyporheic zone that potentially affect hyporheic exchange through modifications in the sediment structure of streambeds. Clogging results from excessive fine sediment infiltration and deposition in rivers, and it is known to decrease matrix porosity and potentially reduce permeability. Faunal bioturbation activity may compensate for the negative effect of clogging by reworking the sediment, increasing porosity, and preventing further infiltration of fines. Although both processes of clogging and bioturbation have received significant attention in the literature separately, their combined effects on streambed sediment structure are not well understood, mostly due to the lack of a standard methodology for their assessment. Here, we illustrate a novel methodology using X‐ray computed tomography (CT), as proof of concept, to investigate how, together, clogging and bioturbation affect streambed porosity in a controlled flow‐through flume. By visualising gallery formations of an upward conveyor macroinvertebrate; Lumbriculus variegatus as a model species, we quantified bioturbation activity in a clogged streambed, focusing on orientation, depth, and volume at downwelling and upwelling areas of the flume. Gallery creation increased the porosity of the streambed sediment, suggesting a potential improvement in permeability and a possible offset of clogging effects. We illustrate the promising use of X‐ray CT as a tool to assess bioturbation in clogged streambeds, and the potential role of bioturbation activity supporting hyporheic exchange processes in streambeds, warranting further studies to understand the extent of bioturbation impacts in natural systems.

30. Degradation resistance of different cementitious materials to phosphoric acid attack at early stage

Abstract

Sewer wastewater systems pose great threats to OPC-based concretes used for pipes due to the presence of various acids. Phosphoric acid can cause as much damage as sulphuric acid but has been very lightly studied. This study focuses on the early stage of the degradation process of different cementitious materials in phosphoric acid. Three types of cementitious materials are compared: OPC (100% cement), slag-blended OPC (slag/cement mass ratio at 65/35) and alkali-activated slag/fly ash pastes (slag/fly ash mass ratio at 50/50). Samples were exposed to phosphoric acid solution with a constant pH at 2.0 ± 0.2 for 44 days. The degradation kinetics, chemical and microstructural properties as well as dissolution rate of these binders are analysed. The results show that the alkali-activated slag/fly ash binder has the lowest degradation rate compared to the other cement-based binders. The intrinsic characteristics of the binders lead to significant changes in the kinetics of degradation. The chemical properties of the binders are the critical influential factor of the early stage behaviour. A conceptual degradation process is proposed to describe the early-stage kinetics of degradation for the cementitious materials studied.

33. Obstetric Neuropathy in Diabetic Patients: The "Double Hit Hypothesis".

Abstract

The two-hit model has been proposed to explain the effects of diabetes on mothers who are already in a putative subclinical damaged state and then undergo neuronal damage during the delivery process. However, the anatomical and pathophysiological mechanisms are not well understood. Our overarching hypothesis in this review paper is that pregnant women who are diabetic have a damaged peripheral nervous system, constituting the "first hit" hypothesis. The delivery process itself—the "second hit"—can produce neurological damage to the mother. Women with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at risk for neurological damage during both hits, but the cumulative effects of both "hits" pose a greater risk of neurological damage and pathophysiological changes during delivery. In our analysis, we introduce the different steps of our concept paper. Subsequently, we describe each of the topics. First, we outline the mechanisms by which diabetes acts as a detrimental variable in neuropathy by focusing on the most common form of diabetic neuropathy, diabetic distal symmetrical polyneuropathy, also known as distal sensorimotor neuropathy. The possible role of macrosomia in causing diabetic neuropathy and obstetric neurological injury is discussed. Second, we describe how vaginal delivery can cause various obstetrical neurological syndromes and pathophysiological changes. Third, we highlight the risk of obstetric neuropathy and discuss anatomical sites at which lesions may occur, including lesions during delivery. Fourth, we characterize the pathophysiological pathways involved in the causation of diabetic neuropathy. Finally, we highlight diabetic damage to sensory vs. motor nerves, including how hyperglycemia causes different types of damage depending on the location of nerve cell bodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Changes in Pore Geometry and Connectivity in the Basalt Pore Network Adjacent to Fractures in Response to CO2-Saturated Fluid

Abstract

Pores connected to fractures provide an increased surface area for fluid‐rock interactions when reactive fluids, such as CO2‐saturated water, flow within fractures. Diffusion‐controlled transport of ions including dissolved CO2, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Si within the connected pore network can lead to local mineral undersaturation or supersaturation and respective local dissolution or precipitation of secondary minerals. In this study, a diffusion‐controlled experiment was conducted on a fractured basalt under subsurface conditions (60°C and 80 bars) to investigate the changes in the pore volume, the connectivity within the pore network, the pore and throat size distribution and to quantify the volume of dissolved and precipitated mineral phases. CO2‐saturated water with a supply of ions from the dissolution of basalt powder was reacted with an artificially fractured basalt sample over 12 weeks. The net pore volume of the sample decreased by 158 mm3, equivalent to 7.7% of the initial pore volume (2,041 mm3). The number of pores decreased considerably (15%) while the decline in the number of throats was small (4%) suggesting precipitation primarily occurred in pores. The number of isolated pores declined, which is attributed to mineral dissolution leading to greater connectivity within the pore network. Overall, the results provide insights into the early phase of reactive fluid flow in fractured basalt eventually leading to self‐sealing of fractures and the adjacent pore network.

37. Heating rates are more strongly influenced by near-infrared than visible reflectance in beetles

Abstract

Adaptations to control heat transfer through the integument are a key component of temperature regulation in animals. However, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of how different optical and morphological properties of the integument affect heating rates. To address these gaps, we examined the effect of reflectivity in both ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared wavelengths, surface rugosity (roughness), effective area (area subjected to illumination) and cuticle thickness on radiative heat gain in jewel beetles (Buprestidae). We measured heating rate using a solar simulator to mimic natural sunlight, a thermal chamber to control the effects of conduction and convection, and optical filters to isolate different wavelengths. We found that effective area and reflectivity predicted heating rate. The thermal effect of reflectivity was driven by variation in near-infrared rather than ultraviolet-visible reflectivity. By contrast, cuticle thickness and surface rugosity had no detectable effect. Our results provide empirical evidence that near-infrared reflectivity has an important effect on radiative heat gain. Modulating reflectance of near-infrared wavelengths of light may be a more widespread adaptation to control heat gain than previously appreciated.

Abstract

A step-change in the utility of elemental imaging in the biological sciences can be achieved by the integration of quantitative elemental distributions with structural information, allowing novel insights into how tissue development is associated with a dynamic chemical environment. To demonstrate this potential, here we construct a 3D correlative map of biometal distribution and skeletal growth for the first time in a complex organism-in a mouse embryo at developmental stage E14. We achieved this by registering laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) data to micro-computerized tomography (μCT) imagery using endogenous fiducial markers. LA-ICP-MS compositional maps of Rb were used as fiducial markers of dense regions in the micro-CT dataset (e.g. skeletal structure). Results of image registration showed high spatial correlation between both datasets which improved with increasing contrast of the micro-CT images. When coupled with recent advances in analytical instrumentation promoting rapid LA-ICP-MS scanning, this technique promises an enhanced understanding of development in complex biological systems without the need for chemical pre-treatment.
